As an ADHDer, it really amuses me to imagine Withnail as having ADHD himself.

The case for the prosecution m’lud:

Can’t stick to any one thing godammit

Bizarre sleeping hours

Forgets to eat

Unpredictable

Fondness for ‘genius’ terrible schemes which cannot possibly work

Gets fixated on one particular person

Weird highly specific flights of fancy and enthusiasms inflicted upon anyone who’ll listen (Jeff Woade anyone lol) interspersed with complete torpor.

Constant talking

Disproportionate emotional reactions and general drama

Bad at organising and prioritising household tasks…we don’t even need to discuss this one…I mean Jesus Christ look at that kitchen….😬 It’s gonna boot his DSM score right up to roughly the height of Kanchenjunga

Fussy about clothes

Swears a lot

Lightning fast reaction speed (to rampaging bulls and alarming pub homophobes)

Absurdly hypersensitive to criticism

Tendency to self medicate with addictive substances

Impulsive behaviour

Doesn’t yet have a driving license and this is probably for extremely good reasons

Awful spending habits

Absolutely no sense of personal space around others whatsoever

Just generally awesome

IRL, Vivian Mackerrell, the inspo for Withnail, was a somewhat asexual bi guy who apparently once extracted his partners’ kid out of school for the day because he was heartbroken- as Elvis had just died and he needed someone to keep him company and cheer him up. He regularly hung out with a friend who tried to found an unsuccessful garden gnome empire, and was also insanely competitive on the matter of taping up garment boxes absolutely perfectly and better than everyone else (from a side job he worked at) which IMO just adds to the ND chaos vibes of the man/character.

When he was terminally ill he also insisted his favourite niece addressed him as ‘dying Uncle Vivian’ every time they greeted each other which is peak self-dramatising melodrama and I’m here for it
