#world of warcraft #anduin wrynn #wrathion #wranduin #varian wrynn #LIKE theres a head to body ratio that cant be messed up and drawing the eyes wrong will make them look weird #And youve got to consider how to put detail in a small area and how to represent different body types its such a hassle #That said chibi styles are so fun to do and you can do fullbody work with (usually) slightly less work then an actual fullbody #so figuring out how your personal style is translated into chibi is so worth it #So this was me making a chibi style #but i drew these in 2021 so i should do a redraw or something #but i havnt drawn many chibis since so its probably not changed much

Where did you buy a Villains are Destined to Die print copy??? Literally my favorite webtoon, and I'd LOVE owning a copy.

There's official English releases you should be able to buy anywhere (Amazon, Books a Million, Barnes and Noble, etc etc). It's Ize Press, same as ORV, so I have no explanation for why I like one but not the other.

Quahaug Concept Art

Quahaug's concept/reference art! Translation notes and image id under the cut.

Translation notes:

"OP sort of powerset" was literally translated as something like "cheat-like." I feel like OP is the more common English term for that sort of thing, so that's what I used, but some of the meaning was probably lost there.

"Older-tween-ish" was specifically a reference to a particular middle school year for children who are about 12-13 years old. Since grades and names of grades vary a lot from country to country, I just went with "older tween."

[Image id: Several images displaying different parts of 2 pages of the Triangle Strategy artbook, with both the original Japanese as well as versions with English translations. There are several disclaimers noting that the translator doesn't speak Japanese, and that there are likely many mistakes.

On one page, there is a large colored version of Quahaug's canon portrait, along with a smaller, uncolored version. There is an illustrator's note at the bottom that translates to read, "'Manipulating time' is an OP sort of powerset, so though he looks like a child, I aimed to create a look for him that conveyed a sense of unknowable power. (Tatsuaki Urushibara)".

On the second page, there are many drawings of Quahaug, including a closer bust-up portrait in which he's compared to Lyla, with an arrow and label reading, "Mother." There's also several notes that explain the construction of his costume. The costume is labeled as a Greek "phelonion" (a priest's outfit with no real sleeves, just draping fabric). There is a small drawing of this version, with an arrow leading to another drawing that does have sleeves, with the note, "If you can't display this in pixels, use this one." There are several notes that explain how this draping cloth should be considered his everyday clothes, while the ceremonial decoration that goes around his neck is placed over it. There is a close up of the ceremonial dressing's fastenings underneath the metal decoration. Some more notes highlight details on his staff, emphasizing the hourglass on top and the small wheel to the side that can be turned to flip the hourglass. A larger piece of text underneath one fullbody drawing reads, "Character Who Manipulates Time."

On the second half of the second page, there are drawings of some beta designs for Quahaug. He looks much more punk-ish. On one bust-up portrait, there are the captions, "The burden of the time demon caused some of his hair to go gray…." and "All-natural highlighted tips." On the same portrait, he is snapping his fingers, and there's a note that reads, "Manipulating time is as easy as snapping your fingers. You just have to want it or whatever." A speech bubble near his head reads, "I don't think of Anna as a mother." A caption pointing to some green markings on his arm reads, "Demonic time seal on body." In a fullbody drawing of his beta design (which is made up mostly of chains that barely cover him as well as a long roughed-up cloak, there is the note, "Almost naked cloak."

At the bottom of the second page, there is another note that reads, "Initially when we hadn't quite figured out the setting, we had an idea for a more older-tween-ish character as displayed here, but after discussing it with the producers and Mr. Ikushima, we went with his current form. As a boy who manipulates time, I placed an hourglass at the tip of his staff, and his face resembles that of his mother, Lyla. (Tatsuaki Irushibara)". /end id]

i watched both the dub and sub of dungeon meshi and cancel me if you want but overall i prefer the dub so far

#i prefer senshi's japanese voice #but the rest of em i like their english voices better #esp marcille #laios im on the fence. i kind of dislike both of them lol. japanese one is slightly better #i just have a very specific voice for laios in my head and it aint that #but they do pronounce falin wrong (imo) which is annoying #honestly ill probably keep watching all the episodes twice (once subbed and once dubbed) just cuz #its neat to see the differences in translation #and in line delivery

I'm a bit late to the party, but I recently got the first volume of the English P4U2 manga!

I am absolutely geeking out over comparing the Jap, Eng, and fan-Eng versions, so if anyone has any pages or panels they want to see side-by-side across the three, let me know and I'll make a post for you! I can't do the entirety of the book of course, but I can do a few pages at least.

(Below the cut is my initial opinion on the quality of the translation work, some comparisons between various details of the Jap volume and the Eng volume, and some more manga page side-by-sides.)

As for my impression of the translation work so far... To me, it feels like the translator was trying to preserve more of the original Japanese language/culture than Eng-P4AU chose to? Not in every instance though, as there's definitely cases where vernacular translations are utilized instead of literal. But where more literal translations are favored, the wording can feel a little awkward or OOC in English.

Even still, it's a pretty cohesive reading experience, in my opinion.

Also, they translated "Plume of Dusk" correctly, which is a relief. I was worried that some of the technical lore terms might get bungled by literal translations, lol. Conversely, while I'm glad that they didn't preserve Jap-Teddie's "-kuma" habit, and happy that they included a few bear puns in accordance to Eng-Teddie's speech habits, I do lament the low quantity and diversity of bear puns in Teddie's speech overall. Maybe there just wasn't a lot of good places for those in this volume though, so I'll have to see going forth.

Oh- and I noticed that some of the background signs and text got translations as well, which I think is really neat. (I don't read enough manga to know if that's just a standard feature of manga translations though, lol.)

Granted, this is just my first-read first impression, and I don't know enough Japanese to know if some lines may be translated less accurately or not. Plus, I tend to be on the lenient side when judging the quality of creative works. So please refer to other opinions as well if you're trying to decide the quality of the translation for yourself!

Fun fact: the Eng version was printed bigger than the Jap version (at least for the Jap volumes I have; no clue if they printed those at multiple sizes).

Also something cool about the Eng version is that it comes with the same color illustrations as the Jap version had, just sized-up. The exclusive edition also comes with a bonus fold-out poster of the original volume cover!

The end-of-volume artist/editor comic was included as well! I'm personally very glad to finally know what this comic says. My respect for Rokuro-san and Sakamaguro-san (the fish) as creatives has grown even further.

I'm so sorry for the truly horrific lighting but you want to go make this cookie dough and then roll it in sprinkles. Top cookie was baked for the normal amount of time I do and the bottom one I forgot to set a timer for and forgot about. These cookies are fucking incredible and stay soft longer than your normal cookie because of the cornstarch. Like a third of the dough I mixed in the sprinkles to save time and sprinkles and I'll reblog this soon with a picture of one of those too.

It's a fantastic base dough, and I've even modified it some to make a molasses cookie with by adding the full amount of sugar as granulated and then molasses and spices to taste. It turns out super chewy. Spices in order of amounts I generally use: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, allspice, and cloves.

If you want the recipe translated to grams send me an ask and I can do it in like a day or two

me: oh wow an ffxiv theory/meta post! i love these even when i don't agree with them. i wonder if this person will highlight an underdiscussed aspect of the setting, or reframe someone's characterization interestingly the post: "in the original japanese--" me: unsubscribed. blocked. reported. hie thee hence and never darken my door again.

#ffxiv #it's written in tokyo! we are talking about people who if they had a translation question could *walk down the hall and ask the writer*#it's not the english version's fault that you're a coward who's afraid of subtext and subtler characterization #even if it was intended as direct translation 99% of you lack the japanese fluency to appreciate any degree of nuance #and you frankly clearly can't appreciate nuance in english to begin with! so how could you know if it's conveyed correctly.#my favorite example is haurchefant. a lot of people complain about him being 'toned down' in english #which 1) he is. it's culturally necessary. if EN haurchefant talked about your sweat and offered you a 'warm bed' he'd be loathed #he'd come off as sexually aggressive towards women and as bad mlm rep. fans would DESPISE him.#different audiences have different values. he has to be written slightly differently to land in the same way he does in the original.#2) no he's really not. like sure the text of his lines gets toned down. but he's still absurdly into you. he's still a weirdo thrillseeker #there's still SHIRTLESS MEN WORKING OUT IN HIS OFFICE LOL #a lot of people complain that the english version is too aggressive or people are too mean and it's like...these are different contexts #like there's sooo many alisaie lines where people are like 'she's more of a cute tsundere in jp she's mean in english' and like.#alisaie is 100% an american tsundere in english. the localization team just knows how tsundere archetypes come off in english #which is to say straightforward tsundere shit tends to scan in english as either incredibly childish or cumbrained nonsense #and they have in turn written her with just a slightly lighter hand and more culturally intelligibly in english #she's a teenage girl who covers her sensitivity and inability to stop caring by putting on an abrasive front. that's a tsundere #alisaie is sort of an insane feat of localization. new levels of technology previously unheard of #'alisaie is like my badass wlw little sister' okay...yes. let's go with that. please ignore the ass shots in the trailers.
