challenge: tell me, in eight sentences (or less!) about Untitled 1 (6)

ahaha first of all this is bullying on my own blog and second of all [western music starts playing] you have no idea how long i can make a sentence, how many semi-colons i can fire off until we're left facing each other and you're wondering to yourself: did she use six semi-colons or only five, and to tell you the truth, i kinda lost count myself; but a semi-colon is a powerful thing, will increase your wordcount massively, and you've gotta ask yourself just one question: do i feel like reading a wall of a text??

but let me endeavor to try with minimal cheating:

Hob Gadling has spent six hundred years on this earth, and he's lost many things, but the one thing he loses over and over is language. He is engaged constantly the act of translation. He walks the knife-edge of memory and discretion in choosing to teach history. He has little record of his own changing language, and has not kept a true journal since he found a forgotten one in a museum and felt sick with it. It shows up only in hasty notes unintelligible to anyone but himself: the ſ in place of s, abbreviations from different languages, archaic spellings and forgotten words. There is nobody who could understand it all regardless, save one, and he drove him off in 1889. One day, his stranger returns, and names himself 'friend'. Hob protects his secret idiolect still, because he would not lose him anew, because there are truths in it that are better translated, and because he could not bear it if the one person capable of seeing the whole of him did not like what he saw. Then he fails.

Dustin rolled his eyes when Eddie parked in the huge concert parking lot.

“You’re just salty because I like them as much as I like Corroded Coffin,” he huffed getting out the car. “You have to concede that Abaddon’s vocals are killer.”

Eddie scoffed. “Do not. I haven’t heard them live. Way too many artists use autotune too much these days.”

“You sound like that meme,” he sneered, “‘Old Man Yells at Cloud’.”

Eddie swatted at him playfully. “Am not.” Dustin raised his eyebrow skeptically and he threw his arms in the air. “I’m not. I am a very serious musician, Dusty. The last thing metal needs is some band that can’t write or even play their own instruments. This isn’t pop.”

“You are such an asshole,” he said and turned toward the entrance, leaving Eddie to jog to catch up with him.

Eddie sighed and put his arm around Dustin’s shoulder. “I’m sorry. You’re right. I am being an asshole. I turned into the person I swore I would never be. Those shit for brains critics that hated Corroded Coffin when we first got on the scene. And that was wrong of me.”

So slight change in schedule my dearest ones. As I am living in a new time zone hours will be shifted up two hours.

So from 8am-11pm EST I will be taking asks to help me write. I'm really looking forward to it today, too, because holy fuck do I need to get back into the groove of writing again. Last week with the whole moving cross country fucked up my will to write. It's a miracle I even have a snippet this week.

Steve cut a glance to the side, hoping to catch Nancy’s eye. She always hated how the title of witch was given to those deemed of ‘lesser’ magic but wizard was taken more seriously. Even though she herself only saw magic as something to experiment and test with. She was rapidly on her way to achieving the title of artificer for her work.

Instead he caught the eye of one of Hopper’s underlings, someone drafted into the Town Watch for some skill or other, Steve never really cared enough to know.

She was a weird one. Tall for a girl and willowy with a smattering of freckles and an unkempt mop of light brownish blondish hair. A year or two younger than him, he’d seen her around town here or there with a big musical horn of some kind. He hadn't seen her with it recently but as Hoppers underling, and therefore an underling of High Priest Henry Creel and the Dawnfather, frivilous hobbies were to be discarded in favour of work ethic.

She wrinkled her nose up at the disparaging tone of ‘witch’ but when she caught Steve looking she stuck her tongue out at him.

He scowled back and returned the favour.

“What- What girl?” Steve’s voice comes out soft, strained. Eyes squeezed shut because his head must hurt so bad. “Max?”

Billy thinks of his sister, all fiery red hair and an attitude to match. He hopes she doesn’t find out about this. Doesn’t need to have one more reason to think less of him. He wants her to remember the last time she saw him - maybe still not the ideal brother she wanted, but at least one who was trying to be less of a dick than before.

“No,” the thing responds. And it pulls up a memory of Billy driving the Camaro, glancing in the rearview mirror at Max and Jane singing along to the radio as he played chauffeur. “The other girl. Jane.” The name rolls off unfamiliar on his tongue now.

Steve’s eyes go wide, realization kicking in. “No. Billy! Billy, come on, look at me, I know you’re in there!”

“Tell. Me.” the thing demands, impatience and anger growing. And Billy watches as his own hands reach out to wrap around Steve’s throat, squeezing tight until Steve can’t form words anymore, only painful gargles and choked coughing coming from his mouth.

“So how was the movie?” Robin asks as she slides into the car, super over-energetically for 10:30 at night after a closing shift.  Steve rubs the bridge of his nose.  Yeah, she’s up to something. “Kind of weird,” he admits.  How weird are horror movies supposed to get?  Shouldn’t it just be, scary monster, some blood and gore, cuddle a girl through the jumpscares?  It just seems like a lot, to have to cope with jumpscares and weird dream shit, all in one movie.  “Hey, can horror movies be kind of gay?” "What?" Robin yelps, way too loud. Steve sighs. “Do I have to bury a body tonight?” he asks. He’s pretty sure the emergency shovel’s still in the trunk, but Tracy had been maybe the most boring date Steve’s had in two months, which is really saying something, and he was sort of looking forwards to going home. “Nope, no body,” Robin says, so Steve starts the car. If Robin’s new crisis isn’t a felony, she can tell him about it while he drives. “What’d you do?” he asks. He doesn’t even have to look away from the windshield to feel her full-body wince.

An unnaturally high proportion of these WIPs are currently paused in the middle of a conversation between Steve and Robin in which Steve sighs a lot.

Currently trying to make headway on the Rivendell piece, so here’s a snippet I wrote today:

The goshawk turned its head and one fierce glaring eye met Arwen’s. A predator’s aerial view of the moor swept over her sight: patches of snow and bronze heather stretched over rock—and a thick dark stream of orcs flowing down from the mountains. Though the hawk didn’t hunt by scent, she could smell carrion, and the strong steady wind bearing her up stank of its foulness. 

I need to write more on all of these, so ask away!

heres a snippet from my girl peterick fic, which i've been working on most recently. this picks up in the middle of a conversation and i'm not giving u context, so good luck:

Patrick can’t hold her laugh back anymore at that one, and neither can Pete, apparently, because the two of them devolve into giggles.

“Hey, whats going on over here?” Joe calls from where she and Andy are walking over. They’d moved to another picnic table to eat their lunch when Pete has started trying to convince Patrick that sex in a reststop bathroom was a good idea.

“Patricia still won’t have sex with me,” Pete announces. Patrick punches her shoulder for the use of her given name.

“Thank god,” Andy says, making sure to take a dramatic sigh of relief.

“You guys just don’t know what it’s like to have the worlds hottest girlfriend and live in a van with her for weeks with no sex,” Pete grumbles. “I feel like a priest or something. Like my virginity has been reinstated from going so long without sex.”

“We literally fucked last week when we got that motel.”

“La la la la,” Joe chants, covering her ears, “did not need to know that!”

a handsome gift! the least I can offer is more twitter beef au!! most of this was written right in my tumblr drafts when I was still labouring under the delusion that was I was doing could be called "describe the fic you would write" - hob learns about The Diss Track. in his introduction to english lit class:

On Thursday morning, Hob is walking to his lecture, wearing his one sweatervest, because he can, thank you very much. Morpheus hadn't posted in over a day, and he supposes that's just the speed of the internet, and their little battle of wits is over. When he gets into the hall and sets his bag down, every single one of his students looks up at once. And several young people who - who are not even his students, he thinks.

"Right, hello class. Good to see you all here and keen on our last lecture before winter break. And welcome to the new faces as well. I can only assume you're here because of your interest in Marlowe."

"Oh my god," someone says at the back, loud enough for Hob to hear. "He's wearing the vest." He firmly reminds himself this is exactly what he wanted.

Amanda, who sits at the front and always does the readings, raises her hand. Hob calls on her in relief.

"Uh. Professor. We love Marlowe. But haven't you seen it yet?"

Hob had forgotten to silence his phone and it's started buzzing. He ignores it.

"Seen what," he says, very levelly. Smiling firmly. Not at all panicking. Ignoring his students' exchanged glances.

"The song."

"It's a diss track," says another student.

"Sorry, yeah, the diss track."

The entire lecture hall is faintly vibrating with anticipation.

"Is there swearing?" he asks, "I mean, more than I do in class. Anything particularly offensive?"

"No, professor," she says, understanding immediately.

"Well, I suspect I'll find it pretty quickly if I check my phone just now, and that only half of you are here for Marlowe anyways, so let's just put it on, shall we?"

Some kids actually cheer. "Enough of that," he says, "We're going to have a rigorous academic discussion about it afterwards." Then, because he cannot and will not help himself, he adds, "Presuming, of course, there is sufficient subject matter to engage with."

He pulls out his phone and fails utterly to hide his grin at the chorus of ooohs. Someone in the back actually shouts, "Get him, professor!"

Sure enough, the same video has been sent to him half a dozen times. He pulls it up, gets it displayed on the lecture hall's screen, and presses play.

“Alright,” he says. “Let’s see what all this fuss is all about.”

He has enough professional goodwill from years of teaching to do this kind of stupid thing, and it's nice to cash it in, sometimes. He likes to be the cool professor when he can. Even in a sweatervest.

He leans back against the lectern to watch. It's not Morpheus on screen, but a woman that Hob distantly recognizes. She's gorgeous, and apparently, given the rapturous whispers behind him, also at least a little famous. She's surrounded by takeaway containers, fiddling with her phone until music starts playing. "Good job, baby brother." She takes a sip of her beer and then wipes her mouth, and grins brightly right at the camera. "This one's for you, prof," she says, laughing.

Afterwards, the entire lecture hall is silent. Hob is silent.

"Holy shit," says a student, and Hob turns around, face burning. "She murdered you."

Hob gathers himself. He feels a little dizzy. It might low blood sugar. Or love.

"Indeed. Right. Well. Certainly a lot to unpack there." His hands are a little sweaty. It's definitely love. "This isn’t a classics class, but I know some of you are classics students and would be happy to educate us, so let’s start with that parallel made right at the start between the Lotophagi - that’s the lotus-eaters from The Odyssey - and the concept of academia as an ivory tower. Who wants to talk about that?"

Five different hands shoot up. "Wow. Okay, okay," he laughs. "Tristan, start us off."

In the next 80 minutes, he hardly gets a word in edgewise. He is, absolutely gloriously, playing discussion moderator instead of lecturer. Hob knows, feels it in his gut even now, that he will look back on this as one of the best classes he’s ever held. Students are twisting around in their chairs to engage with each other.

It is, he thinks, absolutely worth a bit of murdering.

Smiling gratefully, Bernie sits down at the edge of the tub, leaning forward with her arms on her knees for a moment, feeling quite content. She's barely in any pain at all now, and the sound of the water falling from the showerhead is soothing.

"Close your eyes," Serena murmurs, and when Bernie complies, she washes her hair for her, then rinses it out before quickly finishing her own clean-up, turning off the water and stepping out behind the shower curtain.

15: How do you name settings/characters?

Ugh, names are so hard. They have to sound right to my ear and look right on the page. Impostor syndrome dictates that everyone else’s names sound cool while mine sound derivative or bad. /sigh. So: starting with character names. I often start with either a real name I know, or hit up a random generator or baby name list until I find a name that intrigues me. Then I tweak it until it fits the criteria above. Change out vowels and consonants until it sounds and looks right. I get the sound first, then come up with a spelling that feels like it matches. Maybe there’s some synesthesia there, idk. Probably.

Settings are a little different. Usually they get named for a predominant feature. Mistlands comes from the mist surrounding everything. Now that I think about it, a number of recent settings drawing on the Deadlands ruleset got the suffix -lands. So not very original. 

18: How many titles has your current WIP gone through? Which one of your WIPs has had the most titles?

Skyfallen as a novel has only ever had one title. It began life, however, as a character background and the filename was something of a joke: “Punxsutawney Phil, Harrowed Gunfighter and generally pissed-off can't-get-drunk drunk.” 

Yes. for the groundhog. I replaced “Punxsutawney” at least 15 times with different variations and may have settled on “Philomath” (which is a real town but is less well known and at least doesn’t have a nationally-famous groundhog) but it’s still up in the air. 

It sounded like a classic old west name. What can I say?

Skyfallen didn't have any other name for months, until I wrote a part and made up the term, and knew it was right. Most of my WIPs get their titles that way.

I think the one that had the most title changes was a piece for a contest (didn’t win) at somewhere around ten. I’m still not thrilled with the one I chose but oh well.

I saw this on a blog and I wasn’t tagged, but it’s been a rough one lately so I figured, what the hell, and stole it. That’s right. I’m a hardened, dangerous criminal. Ladies, hold on to your hearts.

Something Borrowed, Something Blues (aka ‘Reincarnation Blues 2: Electric Blues-galoo’): This one’s actually already posted to AO3. It was the last of my great ‘post each chapter as you write it’ projects and, well, it’s currently demonstrating why that’s a dangerous way to post fanfiction, as it’s been on unannounced and indefinite hiatus since 2020. I do intend to come back and finish it, it’s just...been a time.

the road goes ever on (aka ‘the monster longfic’ or ‘the monster Stranger Things longfic’): This beast is finally drafted! ...annnnnd needs a few structural edits and a looot of nitpicking before anybody else’s eyeballs are allowed on it. What started out as a fun silly immediately-post-season-three canon-divergence AU romp about Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley getting superpowers and also having to deal with an alien monster imprinting on them both like a duckling quickly ballooned into a horrific mutant hybrid of that story, a here-is-every-problem-I-had-with-the-season’s-characterisation coda to s3, and an extended-Labyrinth-reference narrative arc all about El dealing with grief and guilt and coming to terms with everything she’s lost in exchange for her freedom. I promise it’s still going to be fun, though. Totally. 

put your curse in reverse (aka ‘superpowers fic season two’):  The sequel to the kids aren’t alright, aka ‘the one where (nearly) all the main characters from Stranger Things have powers and (nearly) none of them know it’. Season two, but with some additional characters stirred into the mix, many friendships that weren’t present in canon s2, and at least one bonus love-triangle-to-polyamorous-triad subplot. This beast is nearly drafted, and if I could figure out why I keep feeling like it’s stupid and I’ve gone horribly wrong, and whether that feeling is accurate or just a natural low in the writing cycle, I could probably finish it off in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately...I can’t yet figure out if it’s actually stupid and I’ve gone horribly wrong. Writing is hard.

how many times do you want to die (aka ‘groudhog day but it’s halloween and every time bob newby dies it gets faster’): Absolutely nobody asked for this and you’re getting it anyway. Time loop fic for my beloved pool noodle Joyce/Bob/Hopper because there is nowhere near enough fic for them, I’m actively recruiting, and also I just think Bob Newby is neat. And I've had some additional characterisation thoughts since the last time I wrote for this trio. This one would be done already if I could just figure out this final loop - the characters have a plan, and obviously narratively it has to go wrong somehow, and the solution to that ‘going wrong somehow’ has to also resolve the romantic plot, but I’m still mired in the details. I don’t want to just rehash what happened in canon, but I also don’t want to reinvent the wheel. 

why can’t we be ourselves like we were yesterday: This one doesn’t have a funny working title because the actual title, from notable 80s OT3 anthem ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ by New Order, fell into my head fully formed the instant I conceived of this idea. Bodyswap fic, Steve/Nancy/Jonathan, post-s3. Fix-it for all of their interpersonal problems and not a whole lot else. Fun subplot that the kids are all bodyswapped as well but the teens don’t notice. I have just run out of scenarios to write into scenes and oomph to keep going, so this one’s on a backburner.

the same small town in each of us (aka ‘relativity falls but it’s stranger things’): Ageswap AU of season one of Stranger Things where the kids are the teens, the teens are the adults, and the adults are the kids.  Hawkins Chief of Police Nancy Wheeler and single father Jonathan Byers search for a missing girl and uncover a government conspiracy, while twelve-year-old Karen Harrington and Jim Hopper hunt a monster, and seventeen-year-old Mike Harrington and Will Byers try to help a psychic fugitive rescue her long-lost little sister from the Hawkins National Lab. I’ve recently had a revelation about one of the antagonists that I think is gonna be really good, but it means I have to do a little rethinking of what I’ve already written. And also, I’m still trying to piece together the plot between what I’ve already written and the ending I have in mind. Like I said before, I don’t want to just rehash canon, but with different faces in different places. Even in rewrites of canon, I want to surprise people!

Le Morte d’Artificial Intelligence (aka ‘lesbian apocalypse robot tony stark, serial numbers filed off edition’): I posted about this piece of original fiction a million years ago (read: in spring 2020), and then did not finish it because I got really into Stranger Things and had to put everything on hold to exorcise the monster longfic from my brain first. I do still have the entire thing outlined, though, and I’m going to finish it. It’s not going to be a novel, maybe more like a novella, and I’m planning to put it up for free. If you’re interested in an artificial intelligence falling in love with a changeling who doesn’t realise she’s not a human woman, and also there are eldritch horrors that can only be defeated by the power of friendship and Ke$ha, and King Arthur is there? Stay tuned. 

circus luna: I’ve been working on this kids-on-bikes novel about an evil circus and the group of friends who have to oppose it for literally over a decade now and only just figured out how it ends. Knowing how it ends is the first step to actually plotting and outlining it, though, which is just one step away from drafting it, which is one step away from finishing it, so! I am grateful to the monster longfic and also the hollow, abandoned carcass of Kate Summer Vs. The Multiverse for teaching me, respectively, how to and how not to write a novel.
