Strap in, fuckers. This is a long one.
I've seen a lot of discourse and discussion recently about why TMAGP isn't resonating with listeners as much as TMA did, with a lot of people pointing towards the infrequent structure of each episode and the lack of subtlety that TMA had once excelled in. And while both of these are true, I think the main culprit that has caused these problems for listeners is one thing: the pacing.
TMAGP is only going to be 60 (Edit: 90) episodes long, compared with TMA's absolute behemoth of 200. When I'd found out about this, I'd assumed that it meant TMAGP would have a much smaller story - not having to establish as much information as TMA did, and allowing the story to have lower stakes as a result. This certainly wasn't a bad thing, as many sequels that have tried to one-up their predecessors have gone disastrously wrong, but I knew that the structure would be different to TMA as a result.
However, from the 12 episodes that we've seen so far, it appears that TMAGP is going to have similar levels of stakes to TMA - not the same stakes, of course, but they'll likely be on close to equal footing. This means that TMAGP has to establish the same amount of information to listeners with significantly less time to do it in, and the pacing has to speed up to adhere to that. In the first 12 episodes of TMA, we had established one possible recurring statement character (Gerry), a disturbing worm woman (Prentiss), and the fact that Jon doesn't like his assistant and refuses to believe any of the statements. In the first 12 episodes of TMAGP, we've established every important protagonist and what they sound like, two recurring statement characters (Bonzo and Ink5oul) with one that has already physically appeared, much of Sam's backstory and his ties to the Magnus Institute and the fact that something is deeply wrong with their workplace. That is a big difference.
This difference in pacing is what I believe is turning listeners away from what they'd originally enjoyed about TMA, because there's no longer that warm, comforting atmosphere when you listen to it. Its sound isn't designed to come from a tape recorder and a tape recorder only anymore; it's no longer a sit-down and listen to the Archivist tell you spooky stories for 20 minutes anymore; and, like I mentioned earlier, the structure is no longer the same throughout each episode. The horror anthology aspect, whilst still being there, has now taken a back-burner to the metanarrative because so much has to be established in so little time. To many, that's a bad thing. They listened to the original because they liked the statements, and the little things connecting them hinted to a much larger story at play. When this story was revealed, we got to see Jonny Sims and his brilliant prose at its best, because there was no longer anything to hide and the statements were in their purest forms - no longer having to establish information to the audience, and simply basking in the fear.
I'm sure we'll get to see the same thing in TMAGP once the narrative reaches that point, but the current pacing has uprooted a lot of listeners' expectations for the show. I'm going to listen to the entire thing, personally; yeah, it's different, and it doesn't deliver the same vibes and comfort as TMA did, and I probably won't be able to fall asleep whilst relistening to the more obscure episodes like I could before, but in a frankly disturbing way, I'm still fascinated with what Jonny, Alex and the other writers have created. This type of horror is the only kind that I genuinely enjoy, and I'm excited to see what direction Protocol goes in.
Edit: I feel like I should clarify that I don't see this comparison as something that takes away from TMAGP. Alex has said that it's going to be different from the get-go, and I do think that comparing it to TMA is an exercise in futility to an extent. I just wanted to talk about the shows together because I feel like they complement one another, and the narrative beats that I've talked about are less to do with TMA on its own and more to do with general narrative structure. We have buildup, payoff and pacing no matter what show it is, because that's what makes a story. I think TMAGP could be taken a little bit like Deltarune in terms of its relation to the original source material: separate entities with some overlap in character and themes. At the end of the day, it's still early days for the show and this entire spiel could just end up gathering dust - I just think it's a cool thing to think about, and it gives me an excuse to infodump about how pacing can affect a narrative and the audience's response to it.
I wrote this while my cat was laying on me. Have a picture as a reward for reading this whole thing.

my detailed thoughts on the first season of Percy jackson.
Cons:
The pacing, I know everyone says this, but really the pacing of this season was all over the place. having 8 episodes while probably the only option for the writing team really hurt the series overall. Adding an additional episode would helped keep things better I think and would allow a better flow. Not to mention it would help keep things structured in a 3 act system with a beginning, middle, and end that a lot of stories, are told in which would have just fit and flowed better. I would prefer 12 eps, for each act having 4 eps, but that is greedy since they're probably going to be stuck with 8 for the rest of the series too
Lightning, the series was just too dark in a lot of scenes, I didn't have much of a problem because I watched on my smarttv, but I know a lot of people who watched on computers or phones had trouble
The beginning, there should have been more episodes in Camp Half-Blood, at least 1 more. I get that the meat of the story is in the journey, but by not establishing camp half-blood as the first place Percy felt like home it makes it feel emptier. I do like how they including flashbacks of luke training percy in the finale but I would have liked more in camp half blood before the start
There's a less wonder and magic in the series than there was in the books. I don't really know how to describe it, but the books made it feel like there were two worlds hiding within each other and there is magic everywhere. Just small things like Ares turning his lost shield into a bullet proof vest because that's the more modern take.
I'm not with a vocal part of the fandom that bitch and moan over the kids not falling into every trap, I like that Percy is smarter, but instead of just making him smarter, I think they should have just had him ask more questions, like if he was a 12 year old with ADHD who had his eyes open to a world. By making him ask questions, it would help let them explain the world more by having people answer Percy, instead of him knowing everything. Certain things I think could have been done better, like the Kronos reveal and the Luke reveal, it could be done as a reveal instead of Percy figuring it out and I think it would have worked better. like have Percy realize it when talking through the prophecy with Luke because Luke mentions the bolt and the helm, something Percy wouldn't have told him or anyone at camp.
For the most part, I like how they did the gods, with the exception with Zeus and Athena. Zeus is such a larger than life figure, as much as I love Lance Riddick's performance, he played him too epic. The Zeus from the books feels more like a powerful blowhard while the series makes him feel too cool to me. As for Athena, I'll admit I'm bias because she's my favorite god but I don't like her being made the villain in Annabeth's story especially offscreen. I get that they're playing up the gods being shit more than the books and since they made Poseidon more sympathetic, making Athena more antagonistic is a choice to make. I just don't think it fits her cold and logical, but still cares about her kids in her way that she was portrayed in the books.
Grover. I honestly like a lot of the things they added to his character, but I wish they didn't take away from his canon character moments. Not many, but I liked him being a different species than Percy and Annabeth, he isn't human, he's part goat and instead of the books stuff, he's more just a kid with different legs and short horns than another creature. Also by taking away his reed pipes and not showing him being able to do magic, it limits the character.
While people complain about the show... showing not telling, I feel like there was a lack of exposition in the show that wasn't there in the books. It kind of goes with Percy being smarter in the show than the books, but there's a lot of stuff left out of the show that is good world building. small example, no one mentions that monsters don't die for good, which is a very important plot point in heroes of olympus, even if they don't make it, it's a good thing to tell a new demi-gods. Or other plot points, like Annabeth wanting to see her father after all these years, despite how badly things broke before, which just kind of resolves offscreen.
Honestly though, it was only the fandom that ever really bothered me. Too many people focusing on uncharitable changes about the series that had to be made since there is a difference between a first person perspective book series and a tv series that they had to make. That they couldn't fit everything into an 8 ep series that's in a whole book
Pros:
Honestly, one of the best adaptions I've seen despite all the cons.
The acting in the show is awesome, the actors for the kids are young but perfect for the roles they were assigned. they might not look like the books, but I genuinely think it doesn't matter if they're going to be this good. Walker, Leah, and Aryan stand out as the stars of this show and for good reason
I really like the way they portrayed Luke in the tv series, I get the twist in the books, but by bringing up stuff with him earlier I think it makes him more sympathetic. I also think by not including the scorpion to kill Percy, and instead make it clear Luke doesn't want to kill Percy makes him feel more like a kid making a dumb decision instead of someone willing to murder a 12 year old.
I like how they portrayed Sally in the show even if some people disagree. I like that she shows more flaws and character than just being the sweetest saddest woman that she was in the books. As much as Sally loves Percy, him not only being a demi-god, but a neurodivergent kid, it wears on any parent's patience, especially a single mother. Having her get angry and lose her temper, having us as the viewers know what she's been through makes her feel more real and fits better for a tv show.
I like most of the effects, I think it fits in the show and looks better than a lot of blockbuster movies. Lightning aside. I think the monsters looked good and so did the magic even if I think the latter could be better
Honestly, I think the fight scenes were great for a disney show where the main character is supposed to be 12. I know people are annoyed with how short they are, but that's how they were in the books. I think they were adapted fine.
I like that since we're not in Percy's head, we get more of Annabeth and Grover. It feels like a real proper adventuring trio than the books where it felt like it was so Percy focused with Annabeth being the secondary main and grover being a main, but kind of sidekick character. Letting Grover and Annabeth be characters, to have scenes without Percy and changing things from the books, like having Annabeth seeing the fates cut the thread, makes more sense when you're not doing a first person books
Overall I think they changed things in a very fair and pragmatic sense. There were a lot, but there were less egergious than the movie that changed the whole plot.

DFQC`s innocence
I want to share my thoughts about this interesting moment. Maybe someone already knows the answer, but i have only thoughts. When the XLH rested in his body and in his royal bedchamber, women come to him (her) in translucent, light, open clothes. We see that they seem to staying there not for the first time. They are touching Moon Supreme so calmly and habitually. Judging by their voices, they are very excited about his returnthey and they missed about him… And when he (XLH) drives the women away, they become embarrassed and ask the question: “Why did the Supreme Moon drive them away?” (So he didn't chase them off before?)
Tumblr media
However, later, after DFQC's plan to get his body back failed, we hear this dialogue: [Subtitles from Netflix] XLH: Why don't you just accept the reality and keep the status quo for now? DFQC: Keep the status quo? You're getting used to it so fast. That's right. You can even use my body to find a man to sleep with. You should be happy. (Wow! Interesting. DFQC is indeed very attractive, so I think not only women would like to have him. And he still thinks XLH could have anyone while she is in his body. And since she is a girl, it is logical to assume that she will wish for a man). XLH: Should I look for you rather than someone else? That's right. You always pretend to be so proud and aloof. I didn't realize you had a lot of women. DFQC:  Have I ever had a woman? XLH:  Yes, you do. DFQC: When I say no, I mean no. (But after all, she saw how women get into his bedroom without any problems) XLH: You're still pretending. What is there to deny? DFQC: I don't need to prove my innocence to you. XLH:  That's right. Anyway, you already said you don't have any love for me. Your affair is none of my business. I'm not even interested. (But it's interesting to me!!!) And Shangque also confirms that DFQC has never had a woman.
And I'll probably add 2 more interesting points: 1) ) [Episode 10] When the Moon Tribe women treated XLH's wounds, they spoke so calmly (relatively calmly) about how the Moon Lord Supreme was infatuated with the fairy from Shuiyuntian.
Tumblr media
2) [Episode 12] Later, one of his subordinates, Nanyu King, the leader of the Moon Clan, wasn't surprised either.
Tumblr media
Nanyou: My Lord. She… DFQC-XLH: I'm used to her company. Now I don't want her to leave my sight. Nanyou: It's a small issue if you like a fairy. But it's inappropriate for her to take part in our state affairs. ("Shuiyuntian-fairy-Pet" are nothing new!!!) Ha! Just think, another concubine has appeared in the palace and will please the Moon Supreme… Not a problem!
But, let's go back to the Moon Supreme. Earlier in [Episode 3], DFQC genuinely doesn't understand why Orchid won't let herself sleep with him. (He is the Moon Supreme DFQC, damn it, he is very desirable, which means he is used to everyone wanting him). Moreover, there are also these rules of Shuiyuntian that a man and a woman should sleep separately. This is something new for him. From this we can conclude that there is no such rule in Moon tribe and a woman in his bedroom is a common thing. DFQC likes to break the rules, and he is still trying to stay with XLH in her room… What happened next, we all know.
And no. I'm not saying he lied to XLH. DFQC is not a liar. In addition, he is honest and sincere, and his every word is always true. (100%) There is one more important detail of the above dialogue:
DFQC: You're getting used to it so fast. That's right. You can even use my body to find a man to sleep with. You should be happy.
DFQC has been deprived of feelings since childhood. He read a lot and reads even now, and he knows perfectly well what can be between a woman and a man. I think that women did sometimes stay with him at night in his bed, but as "furniture" or "teddy bears" for hugs. Perhaps they danced and sang in front of him. They entertained him in every possible way (played chess, drank tea …I'm kidding), but he did not let them near him, and even more so did not kiss anyone and did not let anyone do it. He cannot experience love or passion. Why would he do something with women / men if he does not experience happiness from this? DFQC never does anything for nothing. He always approaches the matter rationally, which means he will not do something that will not benefit him.
But why is DFQC asking XLH what will happen if she sleeps with him at night? [Episode 3] But he knows so much about it. (he is over 30,000 years old!) But I think he knows himself and that he has no plans for her, even if she wanted him, he would not let her touch him, as he did not allow anyone before . Like, why should she think about it at all? (And it’s true. So baby XLH didn’t only read books about history? And she always avoided and was afraid of DFQC when he once again came into her bedroom … What were you thinking, baby? So she knows very well what can happen...)
Tumblr media
That moment, when DFQC kisses XLH underwater (I think he kissed her as much as he wanted. Otherwise, why would he make excuses like that?). We are even shown after that how a leaf sprouts on his tree of emotions. He touches his lips and realizes, that he enjoys kissing her. He never kissed anyone. And this feeling… (Feelings?! Emotions?!)
He is really pure and innocent in front of XLH. He never loved anyone. She is his first and only love.
Personally, I close this puzzle like this. Maybe someone also has thoughts on this? Maybe you have something?

So this is mostly a Choices blog but some of you know that I've recently started playing Romance Club as well because 1) there are some really good books on RC, 2) the art, and 3) to compare both apps. I could probably make this a series(?) to compare and contrast the two but here's one of the main things I've noticed playing both apps:
The Difference in Pacing
Background: The clear reason for this is because of how the books are set up. On Choices, each completed book is approx. 16 chapters (like a movie) while on RC, the book is typically 3 seasons with around 10-12 episodes (like a tv show). So a book like Open Heart, for instance, would be 3 seasons under one title instead of 3 separate books since they occur within a close period. This is different from a series like Heaven's Secret, which has two separate books that span ten years apart.
I bring this up because I assume this difference explains why the pacing in both apps is so different. I can use Blades II, Kindred, Theodora, and DALS as an example.
I've brought this up already, but one of my biggest gripes with Blades II was the very odd pacing. The beginning of the book (in my opinion) took longer than necessary to start the plot and there was a little too much filler with less time to focus on new lore the themes ate tho and I'm grateful we got another book.
Kindred has a similar issue. The concept of a witch book was cool and they had a good plot, but 16 chapters weren't enough to explore everything they wanted to with the book. The ending was rushed and it felt way too easy to defeat the Wraith King. Do I still love this book? Yes. Do I think the authors did well with the amount of time they were given? Also yes. But the rushed plot does make it hard to recommend it since PB is capable of handling a lot of plot (RE: Blades I).
On the other hand, Theodora has 3 seasons and the whole immortality arc (the premise of the book) wasn't explained until near the end of S2. We had an entire season to explore the character and at least half of a second season to explore her life after she realized she was immortal but without knowing why (human -> immortal -> realizing how she became immortal and starts controlling her power). As a result, it becomes easier to get attached to her since we spent more time getting to know her still one of my favorite MCs.
Dracula: A Love Story still can't believe it has 4 seasons spent an entire season before revealing Vlad's identity even though it's in the title. In comparison, PB would have done three chapters of leaving MC in the dark before revealing who Vlad is with the rest of the book being allotted to helping him. I get that we needed to see all the visions and stuff but personally, I feel like I was more invested in Lale and would have read an entire book about her, Aslan, and Vlad. I swear I don't hate DALS please don't be offended lol.
Am I saying I prefer RC to Choices? Not necessarily, I have problems with RC too mostly regarding representation, and I also know it wouldn't be fair to compare the apps since they are set up differently. I just thought this was something interesting to point out.

This is an incomplete list (apparently I love lists) of details scattered throughout the 1st season (still working on the 2nd, my head needs some rest) which seems to be either: hints to a deeper truth; red herrings; mistakes; meaningless details not to be taken seriously (except, in time traveling story, messing with dates and times would be silly, it shouldn’t happen, right? RIGHT??)
Unfortunately, at the moment I am unable to collect screenshot of the episodes as reference, but if you request them I can produce the timestamp.
Episode 1
Emma’s mother sends her a message at 02:47 of the 15th April 2021. The phone states “Wednesday”. Too bad April 15th 2021 was a Thursday. Why, Why Wednesday. Is that a mistake? Was it meant to say that they live in a different timeline? Is it a hint that shows that Time is already broken?
I had my timeline all done and to simplify it, I was sure that: - 14th at 22:00 – 16apr!CXS dives in Emma - 15th at 10:00 – 17apr!CXS dives back in the present - 16th, before evening – QL states the mission - 16th at 22:00 – CXS dive in 14apr!Emma - 17th at 10:00 – CXS dives back and LG pass the info on the fraud to the client. - 17th, Later that day, the fraud makes into the daily news - 17th evening – Emma goes home, finds spring rolls and blankets, calls her mother, meet Liu Min - 18th at dawn, Emma dies. - 18th evening, LG see the news about her death until I realized that the consensus is that the news about the fraud came out on the 15th already, which would make sense with her not seeing CXS message before coming back home and her parent arriving straight away. But then, How could the news about the fraud reach the public before Shiguang were involved? Another time traveler? A mistake? Which timeline makes more sense? I’m not sure anymore. Is it important? Most probably.
Emma's wristwatch consistently marks times inconsistent with the timeline, which I will just tag as “random watch pics, do not read too much into it” and move on, but I feel I still need to acknowledge them.
Episode 2
Now, I have nothing much to say about this episode, except that it seems to be completely separated from the main plot, every episode is strongly affecting the whole story, why this one does not? They could delete it without affecting the overall plot and it weirds me out, probably because I’m a little bit too paranoid at this point.
Episode 3-4-5
Three major problems with these episodes:
Obviously, the glasses issue: at first I indeed thought it was weird, but then we saw Liu Min walking easily while possessed, so I thought that, somehow, the possessor retains its physical characteristics while diving. But then, episode 12 kindly reminded us of this glasses detail. So what’s going on here? Are physical abilities passed down while diving or not? And in that case, what’s happening, someone put lenses on Chen Xiao? The glasses were not his? Is there someone else possessing him?
Why is Chen Xiao the only one actively asking to change the past? Any other case has always been just about retrieving information.
And why does LG accept? Because I’m definitely not buying that the only crucial node is the actual earthquake. After the dive, Chen Xiao should feel less guilty about that day, and therefore he has no reason to look for the “Fairy” in the first place. Isn’t there a time paradox through and through?
Episode 6-7
Why the date on the Security Camera is 20XX/XX/XX 14:48:12 instead of an actual date? What’s the secret here? Was it meant to hint that time is already broken (again) or was this an easy way to stalling because the authors had yet decided the days of the trip?
IF we agreed that, while diving, past and present time flows at the same speed, the two dives in these episodes overlap in present time:
first dive starts on October 13th at 14:30 in the present and presumably on 20XX/XX/XX at 14:30 in the past, the kidnapping seems to have occurred at 14:55, both in the past and in the past. We can presume that this dive ends way before the 12 hours limit was reached.
second dive begins right before the kidnapping, which again I presume happened on 20XX/XX/XX at about 14:55, then CXS awakes and LG states that the 12 hours period is almost done; the dive ends on October 14th at 02:55, which seems to suggest that the second dive started on October 13th at 14:55 BUT at that time CXS was still inside the first dive.
What’s happening here?? Am I wrong? Is time wrong? My goodness
Episode 8
This one drives me nuts for really no reason, I’m not even sure if I’m correct, BUT on the dial of Dong Yi’s wristwatch watch you can read what appears to be a 15 inside the box where, as far as I know, the day of the month is usually shown. IF this assumption is correct, Dong Yi’s watch marks that it is the 15th, while XSS’s phone marks that is October 21st.
Again, Why? Just why are they messing with our head?
Episode 9
Nothing new on this episode but, if only, this episode proofs that diving doesn’t need to start at the exact time the picture or video was taken, because CXS’s dive occurs somewhere between the 10:00 and the 14:45 of October 21st, while the dive’s time seems to be late evening (from more that 2 hours prior 22.34). Does this solve the issue with episodes 6 and 7? Not sure.
Episode 10
I’ll use this episode to address the elephant in the room: the 10:10 ghost clock!
The photo studio seems to have at least 2 clocks, one on the hall, with a red frame, plus another one in the darkroom.
However, a third ghost clock with a white or blueish frame switches place with the other 2 every now and then. The red clock seems to be working fine, the darkroom clock seems that either it stopped or it is 10 minutes off, the ghost clock always marks 10:10.
WHAT is this clock?! Is this a random clock picture just to fill the scene? Is it a hint that something happened at 10:10?
I, I… I’m lost.
Episode 11
I won't address Lu Guang's thought at the end of this episode but I'll leave them for my season 2 analyses, because they fit there better.
Therefore, nothing much is left to say about this episode, except that the darkroom wall with the clock keeps changing aspect (and even the clock disappears at some point).
But, just for the sake of my mind I will tag this as “do not read too much into this one” and, again, move on with my life.
And this was just season 1, I have no idea how mad it’s going to be during season 2.

Giving Doctor Who a New Chance, Part 1: The Star Beast
I like how in the opener the Doctor ends up running into Donna due to plain old Chronic Hero syndrome, rushing towards someone who looks like they needed help
I appreciate that we got a realtime example of Donna just missing a spaceship
her concern with stacking properly is a good establishing moment for viewers who maybe don't know her yet
It's interesting how Donna ended up giving away the money - not doing what he thought she would do
Making Donna's kid trans was a great move now that the UK is known as a rather trans-hostile place
sylvia is interesting - she seems like someone who feels guilty but is sort of going overboard with overcompensating for it rather than truly helping
badass protective - which is probably how Donna would be as a mom, some of the character development stuck despite the memory wipe, small-minded
Another Unit Scientific Advisor!
You can tell the Doctor is having a tough time with how he spills his problems to the Unit lady. Though you can also see 14 isn't quite like 10, not quite as emotionally constipated. 12 had this whole arc about spitting out the words though then chibnall didn't do anything with cause he couldn't write characters to save his life. I guess 13 was supposed to look like his (franky offensive, carricaturish) idea of a private person? At least this keeps the tendency of each incarnation being a contrast to their predecessor. Insofar as 13 had enough personality to be contrasted. Chibnalls characters are all emotionless planks of wood - and I'll better stop ranting now
i like the unit lady
It's a charming detail how Rose sells things on etsy. I betcha anything she has a tumblr
// war flashback to Ryan's increbliy generic youtube channel that was never used to characterize him in any way & then forgotten about //, & the detail is added in a kind of loving, relatable way whereas Chibnall kinda mocked the guy for listening to affirmations, for example
Ah it's so nice to have actual CHARACTERIZATION again
Like this just told us that Rose Noble is creative, but also feels responsibility to help her parents.
And her making little plush aliens is immediately lied to her feeling lonely & alienated because of how she's bullied
CONSISTENCY beyond just what is currently needed for the plot yes please. This should be the bare minimum but Chibnall went 8 episodes without giving Yasmin ANY defining traits or moments
So nice to have CHARACTERS with EMOTIONs and TRAITS
I just KNEW the Doctor was getting another Mom slap the moment the moment he showed up
the definite article XD I got that reference, esp in what looks like an Unit episode
oh noes theyre shooting up Donnas house
i love how he just naturally hands the sonic to Donna without thinking
It's extremly Donna-like to worry about her house during the alien attack
I like the resonating the wall trick coming on again - if you saw this straight after EoT, you'd still get the sense that the Doctor got more experienced.
Donna's neighbor missing everything cause he's listening to music is a mood
I love the impromptu judge wig XD
Been a while since I heard "shadow proclamtion". That was common the first time RTD was running the show
I LOVE how the twist & how the Doctor deduced it from the Unit soldier not being dead. The idea that you can know someone by their method
Also love the doctor trying to outfox the Meep but getting a tad too confident there
Also like how Donna absolutely picks up that Sylvia knows the Doctor & demands the truth, but also having a moment of vulnerability
the story's a bit over the top & cliche, though. I mean I can partially forgive it because the ep is really much more about Donna, but not a fan of the over the top cliched villain. though, this RTD is the guy who made the fart episode. he was good at concepts a lot of the time, but yeah...
The wheelchair stun darts are cliche, too, but I DO like the general twist of the unit lady realizing the guards have been mind-controlled & saving the team. She seemed competent earlier. Makes me miss Osgood a bit. One hopes wheelchair lady will keep showing up in UNIT episodes.
I love Donna taking the initiative here to run off. (characters NOT being planks of wood & making self-motivated decisions! Oh im so glad we're rid of Chibnal's trash writing)
Do like the moment. Donna still having her unimportance complex, the Doctor's response that she isn't not just because he doesn't think anyone's unimportant but because she is so important to him, "why does it have to be you" Yeah David Tennant is still good at pulling ppl's heartstrings, his resigned tone when he begins reciting the 'password'
The password being similar to that time Amy had to unlock it!
Donna's first concern upon "waking up" being that she gave away the money is soo her.
Catherine Tate really shines here how she instantly retrieves the... the fast talking thing from Journey's end??
She gets so excited at getting to blow up the alien tech XD
Again praise be to Catherine cause you can tell how the hole of self-doubt that was there (though not as much pre series 4) is just FILLED with confidence.
He just doesn't give a fuck if they shoot him when he thought Donna was dead
The thing where it's less lethal now because some of the energy passed down to her kid is neat, but I don't like the idea that the personality traits of Donna's kid are attributed to the metacrisis thing. Although I suppose it could be seen as more of a nudge or inspiration
I really like the touch that the Doctor remembered the names of the alien soldiers & spoke of them to their superiors, and that he neutralized the meep non-lethally. He's an actual pacifist again with lika a worldview, not just regurgitating lines about "not liking guns" out of context
I HATE the women's intuition thing. I get that they were trying to like affirm Rose's gender as real here but I hate it. It's essentialist and I hate it. I'm gonna treat it as just a joke Donna & Rose did cause they would.
Though I DO like, & find it very appropriate that Donna & Rose themselves are the ones to think up the solution & having it sort of come from Donna's grounded, down to earthsy nature. As a counterpoint to how the Doctor kind of over-ruled Donna's will to sort of unilaterally save her against her will & taking the burden onto himself. (Not that one can blame him too much for what he did while panicking, trying to save his besties' life. )
I love the Doctor fanboying over the new "desktop theme" & praising the TARDIS for the design choices
Such a nice touch that both the Doctor & the TARDIS remember Donna's coffee preferences. It's all about the little things.
David still got it with the "it killed me" line
I do notice that his delivery, while similar, in some aspects, is still markedly different. 14 is more emotionally honest than 10, but also less hyper, he carries himself a bit 'heavier'.
Like I feel some of that subtle distinction in nuance comes down to that when the Dr. turned into 10 it was "for" Rose (so the charme & energy etc were dialed to max), but 14 is "for" Donna, in a way, though he didn't know it at the start.
AAAAnd Donna immediately returns to being a supplier of grounding common-sense advice. Cause she is right about the big goodbye thing
that's a lot of pyrotechnics for just one coffee. Donna must've spilled it into the worst possible spot. That would be the sort of luck they'd have.
Soo. it was an episode without Chibnal's terrible, flavorless writing. I liked some of the story beats though not over the top wowed but I feel like this is the first act of a longer play & the emotional penny is probably still to drop.

Saitama and Genos are just hopelessly baffling to me
As someone who has had a Significant other for 12+ years going or longer now, it is absolutely baffling to me how Saitama and Genos are somehow MORE involved than WE ARE in this intimate way that they're always joined at the hip, yet not physically or romantically involved somehow. And just as domestic and domestically intimate as actually involved, married couples.
Genos literally fetches Saitama's heart underwear boxers and puts them outside the bathroom so he can dress up after a bath. Genos would probably jump into the bath if it had room in it. Genos legit stared at Saitama wearing a tiny towel getting a massage from massage chair.
Genos has expressed in meta that he 100% thinks Saitama's consciousness and his body are beautiful, ergo he's about as attracted as cyborg who thinks his sensei is not interested and who's still figuring out his own emotions can be.
The only problem seems to be that Saitama and his emotions need a light switch put into ON position.
I can also count like minimum 4 dick jokes made about Saitama eating phallus shaped food objects and awakening libido joke in which Genos gut headbutts to boot, from the top of my head. Fucking bananas and popsicles man, one being anime-only addition. I can't believe it took me this long. Screw Metal bat making dick jokes, Saitama eating them is where it's at.
Tumblr media
And the longest fry too. Saitama, not inside a family restaurant damnit!
Oh wait, Genos stole the fry, I guess he's the inside joke. The latex glove examination on the fry does not escape me either. Nor does the OVA episode theme.
And how come Saitama is comfortable lounging around in pyjama bottoms 5 days after Genos moved in when Genos is obviously drawing him reading manga? He's self-conscious about his bald head and self-image otherwise but not this?
Something shifted though, because Saitama actually held Genos physically close for the majority of 169.
Progress!
ONE is writing the slowest of slow burns in all of fiction. Within the time duration of mere 6 months in universe. It's gonna take another 7 years isn't it?
Come on man.
I can't make this shit up even if I tried.
Tumblr media
How obvious can a parallel get?
Like how the other brown bear protects the smaller, white coloured and more vulnerable bear from the rain. Like how Genos rushed to Saitama's aid and protects his vulnerable emotions, his love for other beings (like his love for pets) from melancholy.
To his beloved's aid.
And he will find him before the stars do. Stars is the universe, ergo it's OPM God, who is also trying to prey on his emotional vulnerabilities. Long as Saitama only shows his emotional weakness to him and comes back home to him, his safe haven, he'll be fine.
It's not a coincidence that in the OVA, Bang had been thinking about 200 different ways how to take down Saitama when his guard was down. When Bang is one of the identities God has assumed to lure in emotionally vulnerable Garou.
Even without a map to the place where I'll return The heat of your heartbeat is guiding me The arrow of that thought is flying straight ahead Even if it's far away.. When we reach our hands out, the bond teaches us that kindness is strength That is what's important to have for living That's why I'll be back I'll be back to right here
Saitama: That’s not the point... I have the feeling that things like a heart to heart interaction, sharing an umbrella, warmth, are all things broken away in my life. Other people can have things like big events and circumstances happening, romances and such bringing happiness in their daily lives. I have the feeling something broke and that sweet-like fluffy, nice stuff just fell right off from me. That's what I meant.
Saitama: Genos, look, have you ever seen a hero anime without a love interest in it? Genos: I don't remember watching a lot of anime in the past.. Why do you ask? Saitama: Well, we're heroes, right? We're working and living as such. And yet, why are we indifferent towards things like love interests or girlfriends? In some way it seems obvious and logical, but is it really ok? Are you ok with reality being so much harder than fiction?
I can't make this shit up man.
I will be forever malding if ONE is writing some kind of unrequited love scenario. That would just be cruel. I just want them to be wholesome together like fate intended. ;_;
(Genos gets so jealous on the cd drama lmao)
(awakening libido is from rush of hormones and neurotransmitters like dopamine and his instinctive drives and desires jumpstarting on his younger body when his future self regained homestasis and connected the psyche)

Guess what's ready for digital order! It's @ultra-zine!!!
Tumblr media
Okay look I know that my very first post said that I wasn't a figure person. That has obviously changed and I have officially fallen into the SH Figuarts rabbit hole. I preordered Blazar plus I want to get Zero and all of Z's forms. Send help, lmao
Full disclosure: I did contribute something to this zine, which is one reason why I haven't done many liveblogs lately. (I'm still a little emotional about seeing something I've written in print.) I wrote Chill Out, It's Snow Problem, though that was before I saw the dub for Z. Watching that notably changed how I write Z's verbal tics.
I had a hard time with this story because my first draft was like 4500 words. I had to cut out a lot and that was a painful experience! Granted, for me editing is always a painful process, but I'm of the opinion that if it doesn't hurt in one way or another, I'm not editing enough. I'll probably toss up the longer version on AO3 eventually though. It actually really, really hurt to cut as much as I did and I want those parts to see the light of day in one way or another.
There were some scenes that I wanted to write but didn't even make it into the first draft. There was originally going to be a scene with Z taking control of Haruki's body with his permission and skating at an ice rink because my headcanon is that Z would be really good at it. Yes, that scene from episode 7 has been living rent-free in my head for way too long. I also thought Z skating in Haruki's body would be a fun scene for the artist (in this case the amazing @chacerider, though I didn't know that at the time) to use for the illustration if they wanted. Beliarok was going to appear too, but I couldn't think of a way to get him in there in a way that I was happy with.
Originally the story started in Haruki's apartment before going to STORAGE, which actually did make it into the first draft. I had to choose between scrapping that whole intro or paring down the emotional beats that came later. The choice was obvious. Oh yeah and I had Haruki nearly get hit by a truck in the first draft. Fun! Still had to cut it, though.
Haruki and Z being able to tell how the other is feeling or emotions bleeding from one to the other isn't exactly something that happens in canon, I know. It's pretty much me taking the idea of Haruki's emotional state having a big effect on Z in episode 12 and then dialing it up to 11. I like the idea of there being side effects (for lack of a better word) to merging, and I wanted to explore how the friendship between Z and Haruki might develop if there was a lot more unintentional emotional openness. I'll also fully admit that I stole some things from Geed. Leito and Zero's conversations when they're out and around regular people was the big one, and while Z does take control of Haruki's body in episode 7 for a second, I was really more thinking of Geed's early episodes and how Zero would take control of Leito's body basically whenever he felt he needed to.
If you made it to the end, thanks! The link to read my story on AO3 is below. If you didn't manage to grab a physical edition of the zine, you can get a digital version of it and the previous volumes here!

The Killing Vote: more on Joohyun, Kwon Seokju & Kim Muchan
The Killing Vote (ep. 1-5 notes) The Killing Vote (ep. 6 & overall notes)
It was supposed to be an edit to the previous post, but it would make it even longer than it already is, so I decided to make a separate post! (and I believe it would also exceed the screenshot limit by reeeeeeally far haha)
Have a nice week!!!!
(SPOILERS UP TO EPISODE 6!!!!)
I saw someone notice on the kr twitter that Joohyun smiled as she made KMC hear KSJ say he felt deeply for her. You can also say Joohyun looked happy from hearing these words again.
Tumblr media
They said you could see KMC’s reaction afterwards as jealousy in addition to projecting his past on her and warning her (because he too was under KSJ’s influence and he probably sees his past self in her ; the user mentioned his sentence 'I told you not to get too close to him. He completely fooled you' as something he could say out of these conflicting emotions).
Now that made me think about the 당신 KSJ used to address Joohyun in the moment recorded (‘I feel deeply for you’):
The formal 2nd-person pronoun 당신, but its uses are specific and rare. Most of the time in kr the subject is implied, and you would rather address someone by their title or name (with an honorific if need be) depending on your relationship.
Eg. Joohyun calls KMC 팀장님/team leader and KSJ 교수님/professor, Joomin calls her sister 언니/big sister.
Note: 언니 can also be used by a female speaker for an older woman she’s close to eg. a friend, a girlfriend (like 형 = younger man -> older man ; 오빠 = younger woman -> older man or 누나 = younger man -> older woman).
You can also use the informal pronoun 너 when addressing people the same age or younger than you that you’re close to (and not older, unless your interlocutor asked you to/gave their ok and even still, saying it in public could be a problem/awkward), or to a kid (even though a polite speech would be preferred) or an animal. It would sound rude otherwise. It could also be between people dating/very close regardless of their age.
Eg.: — KSJ addresses KMC with 너 sometimes in particular moments like ‘You wanted to kill him too.’ or ‘I wished you were Gaetal/Is it really not you?/I will never forgive you.’ ; — KMC & Choi Jinsu with Joohyun & Jodan respectively sometimes ; — Jodan & Joohyun ; — Joohyun with her sister ; KMC with Jihoon & Joomin ; Jihoon & Joomin …
And even though 당신 is part of the formal and polite speech, it’s often used in arguments. I’ll quote this page which explains its different uses really clearly:
-> between married couples (it’s not a pronoun younger couples use typically, some middle-aged couples use it)
-> in a confrontational/demeaning tone, when you intend to be rude to the other person (that’s what you would often hear in kdramas haha)
-> as a reflexive pronoun
-> when the listener/audience is non specific in writing (eg. books, ads, language textbooks, …) & in poetic/romantic context (eg. songs, poems, …):
« (…) 당신 is okay to use if there’s no actual person physically present in front of you receiving the communication, [which] means that either THEY are not there or YOU are not there. Examples: — Songs. You hear 당신 a lot in songs because a song is not one person talking to another person. It’s a broadcast. The listener is non-specific. Even if the song is about someone in particular, is called “Hee Jin” or its lyrics are “This song is for Hee Jin Lee, who lives at 302-12 Royal County, Apartment 304, Yongsan-gu, Seoul”, and there’s absolutely no doubt about who the song is for. That person is still not there in front of you, so 당신 is okay. If you wrote this song for someone named Hee-Jin and you were singing it at a concert that she was attending, it would still be okay.  If, however, you write a song called “Hee Jin” for your girlfriend and then you decide to serenade her outside her window, I’d highly recommend you NOT use 당신 [but rather] Hee Jin. — Advertisements. Because it’s non-personal communication for a non-specific listener.  Even if YOU are there, the dude that wrote the ad is not. » « If you don’t know your interlocutor at all (eg. name, title, age, …), 당신 is not used commonly in speech, but you can use it if you really have no idea how to refer to a stranger and you feel you need to emphasize ‘you’ in a sentence. » (though you would usually rather use 그쪽 to address a stranger safely in a polite way) « 당신 is politer than 너, but is still not considered very polite because it is too direct to refer to someone as 'you' unless the two parties are on familiar terms. »
Note: ever since she met him, Joohyun used to adress KSJ as 권석주씨/Mr. KSJ, but she now calls him 교수님/Professor after he saved her life.
— This was the only time KSJ used 당신 to address Joohyun and in a moment he wanted to convey more personal feelings ; and even in the previous clause ('If you understand Gaetal for the reason I believe'), he addressed her as 주경위 (Insp. Joo): he could've just left the next clause ('then I deeply feel for you.') without a subject since we could understand from the context it was all about Joohyun.
KSJ always speaks to Joohyun with formal and informal high respect. It would make sense that he deliberately changed the way he usually addresses her, emphasizing the ‘you’ with 당신, to convey his compassion and regard her, as an individual and not the inspector, with respect.
Indeed, 당신 is a formal polite pronoun to call somebody that’s on equal footing with you so that would totally align with his conversation with Joohyun:
« Most of the relationships in this society are highly vertical. Comparing your boss to your parents or calling each other with your job titles shows it’s all about power. (…) Calling people by these titles gives you the feeling that you cannot mess with them. »
— Just before 당신 can be heard in the recording, we have a shot of Joohyun observing KMC, as if she’s ready to gauge KMC’s reaction once he hears what’s next.
Tumblr media
— The moment 당신 was played KMC redirected his attention to the recording, frowning ; his jaw clenching, he looked at Joohyun. Letting out a sigh and clicking his tongue, he then proceeded to ask « Anything that wasn’t recorded that’s bothering you? » in an aloof tone, averting his gaze.
When 당신 played:
Tumblr media
His reaction after the recording ended:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to being restless because he wants to find leads in the investigation (thus not wanting to lose time over something he would deem useless), I can see why this could be read as KMC wanting to change the subject out of a bit of jealousy.
— Perhaps KSJ considered the possibility Joohyun might record their exchanges and, in all likelihood, make KMC listen to them since he’s her superior.
If that's the case, then 당신 could also address KMC as a non-specific audience: he was not there when Joohyun and him talked, and KSJ is not there when Joohyun plays the recording to KMC.
Through his exchange with Joohyun, KSJ manages to address the two of them: Joohyun, as he faced her in person, and if so KMC, indirectly through the recording.
Whether KMC realized it or not (provided this guess holds some truth) is another question though! Perhaps what this user saw as jealousy could also be read as emotion and then self-consciousness once he realized Joohyun watched?
This would not be the first time the three of them communicate through one another:
— KMC asks Joohyun to mention the ‘devils deemed innocent’ line when she interviews the inmates so that KSJ reacts to it.
— KSJ knows KMC listens Joohyun’s interview and addresses him directly in order to negotiate his pardon.
— You can notice it was first KMC who introduced Joohyun to KSJ (because he refused his visit request), but it’s now KSJ who wants Joohyun as her messenger. If Joohyun understood KSJ’s intentions, she then also tried to convey KSJ’s feelings to KMC: since KMC confided in her his guilt, and she thought that if KSJ hated him because he needed somebody to blame, she perhaps wanted to comfort him. That could also explain her smile in KMC’s direction because she maybe hoped to patch things up between the two of them.
After all, from the whole exchange, the drama showed KMC hearing this sole line on the rooftop: « If you understand Gaetal for the reason I believe, then I feel deeply for you. »
One could argue they wanted to direct our attention to this line in particular, and that’s exactly what Joohyun also does in the drama when she’s home:
Tumblr media
— She also made a similar expression (eyes widening and a half-smirk) to when she found KSJ said something interesting in ep2 (since she takes a particular interest in wording as she collects and analyzes data): did something catch her attention this time too?
Tumblr media
And this also reminds me of this moment in ep5:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It could be read the same way:
-> KMC is obviously startled because this specific request is unusual for KSJ
-> He looks apprehensive/alarmed about what this means (eg. did Gaetal instruct him? Is KSJ planning something on his own?). He could also be potentially worried for Joohyun!
-> KSJ looks like he definitely knows this exchange throws KMC off and he will have no choice but to accept the request anyway if he wants his help ; he also seems to be a bit amused by KMC’s reaction.
-> But his spite in front of KSJ (the tone of ’That won’t be possible’, the tensed head tilt, the tongue click and the corner of his lips twitching as he justifies his agreement in a heavy sigh ‘I was going to assign Lt. Joo for data analysis anyway, so this isn’t special treatment.’) & his exchange with Joohyun afterwards (esp. when she protests as he orders her to bring KSJ near the culprits to recognize Gaetal & she asks him why KSJ wants her to be his messenger) could be seen as bitterness over the whole situation.
This kind of dynamic between KMC and Joohyun could definitely align with their habit to investigate on their own without the other knowing because they have some reservations over fully trusting each other.
I didn’t catch it when I watched ep5, but Joohyun crossed both KMC, Choi Jinsu as well as BWT’s parents (who are deceased) from the list with red lines to rule them out as suspects.
Tumblr media
After looking nervous/embarrassed as she gets to KMC’s profile in front of KSJ, she bothered giving an explanation only as to why the last three were out of the suspects’ list. Which means she probably thought KSJ might not need one for KMC.
Tumblr media
tldr: those three have a triangular relationship going onnnnnnn (and I don’t even know which kind of triangle this is all about anymore at this point haha, Karpman’s? Love? Both?)

Guys guys guys guys guys, what the fuck? In season 3, before Eleven dumps mike and when they’re still very much together, in episode 2, mike calls them friends??? He’s giving excuses as to why he can’t see El (because of Hopper) (which I don’t get by the way because he could just tell her the truth, they may not be able to do anything about hopper, but atleast she would understand what’s happening and why Mike is pulling away) and she asks him “do you lie” and he says “friends don’t lie”??? And El doesn’t even see anything wrong with that statement until this conversation with max: “but, friends don’t lie” “well, boyfriends do!”. I guess I see why El doesn’t see what’s wrong with the statement considering she’s been in a lab for 12 years with no exposure to romance or relationships, and doesn’t get the distinction between siblings and friends and partners in season 1 (which just makes me think she isn’t ready for a relationship and should develop more as her own person) (I mean in the previous season she literally has other people - hopper, terry’s sister whose name I forgot but basically el’s aunt, and Kali - tell her what and where her home is) but Mike? There is no reason for Mike to call them friends. I mean literally this is what happens in season 3 with Mike:
— your girlfriends dad makes you stay away from your girlfriend for longer periods of time and have some space
— you don’t explain what’s happening to your girlfriend and lie to her even though she would probably understand
— you call your girlfriend a friend
— you’re dumped by your girlfriend for completely logical reasons in a way that seems, cinematically, like it’s a good thing for your now ex
— you’re confused and you complain about your ex to your friends and be a moody teenager
— your friend gets tired of your bullshit and tries to get you to actually have fun but gets fed up of your sulking and whining
— you run after your friend in the rain, where you have a pseudo break up that is, cinematically, heartbreaking, and he leaves
— you immediately run after him and try to apologise
— the other parts of the plotline catch up with you and you have no time to process your feelings
— you express that you don’t want your ex to get hurt and that you love her (something that can be completely platonic, as shown by Steve and robin, who are definitely paralleled to El and Mike)
— you never actually discuss your problems with your exes (yes plural) because they’re both leaving and you know you’ll miss them
— your ex best friend says he’ll never want to join another dnd club (basically another friend group) and you light up like a fucking christmas tree on the 25th of December
— your ex girlfriend says she loves you and then kisses you and all the while you’re staring at her like the surprised picachu face
— the two most important people in your life leave you all the while your ex’s dead(?) dad talks about growth and how things change even if you don’t want them too.
What in the…

As a certain protagonist from an award winning Tony Kushner play once said: The Great Work Continues!
You can read my reactions to the 3rd episode of the Magnus Archives under the cut.
00:00 Okay, Silly question. Is Magnus a person? If so, do we meet that person? This is a ~silly question~ cause I think it might literally be the name of the freaky little place Johnathan spends all his time and, if so, this was probably discussed in Episode 1 but I don't want to go back and listen to answer my question.
01:09 And I am gonna speed skip through these ads. You guys should listen though.
02:00- I wonder if people skip through the ads on Small Victories? No hard feelings if you do.
03:01- Dang. Sucks for Casey Shane.
04:26- You know what's across the street from my house? Another single-family house! Which, to some urban planners, probably is a horror unto itself.
05:05- My prayers have been answered. It's the Magnus Institute. (That doesn't solve the problem of if they are a real person who is significant, because why is this freaky little institute dedicated to investigating strange phenoms named after you if your'e a perfectly normal fellow?)
07:53- Okay, so yes the people these logs are about are very strange, but also, even before the people got ~supernaturally~ strange the log holders are still very judgmental of what is just a little odd behavior. I mean, when I was younger I would practice making and mimicking animal noises, be drawn to small dark warm spaces, would repeat the words people said as they said them, and would talk to myself all the time. If one of these people were around me then they'd think I was a little alien horror!
10:30 As someone who has never had a concussion, what's it like?
11:41- Buddy boy, take a Tylenol.
12:53- Honestly the square hole is the most alarming thing about this. Think about it. When's the last time you've seen a perfectly square hole on a piece of antique furniture. Just one hole with no other decoration. As a lover of old furniture, it gives me the williams.
15:06- THIS MAN IS A TERROR!
15:26- HERE YE! HERE YE! Local man obsessively watches mentally disturbed man from his window. More at 11.
16:02- If you're so concerned you need to get the man some help, brother.
17:59- April 7th? Ah, yes, Good Friday. He dropped the ham on the floor and ate it anyway. Harrowing.
18:36- I feel like video games would be great for this guy. Get to sit at home, be invested in a world outside of you, and you don't have to creep on your neighbor for all the days of your life.
20:09- Alright. I am, admittedly, alarmed.
21:02- See and this is why you should have sat there and ate your food. You wouldn't know Lovecraftian Horrors live next door if you minded your own business.
22:23- I know it's the accent, but when he says "Graham" it sounds like 'Gray ham" which amuses me greatly.
23:28- Oh, he's happy to see you.
23:37- Honestly, I do think it's way more interesting (or at least has the potential to be deeply interesting) to explore the idea that monsters and horrors exist but they don't want to hurt you. They are just living parallel to you. Yeah there may be a strange horror living across the street but he'll smile at you like anyone else would and he won't do anything to hurt you or hurt anyone else, but the internal discomfort you feel upon seeing something you were told was scary is what drives your fear. The fear and horror is internal.
25:28- See! Grayham didn't even hurt anyone. He was just chilling and trying to smile down the weirdo who was watching him for months. Honestly, Grayham was being very kind all things considered.
26:16- How do you know Graham didn't have the monster inside him all along?
26:40- Look. He was playing a fun little game with his stalker friend.
27:04- They want me to be scared, but I really do think the idea that the Graham like thing was a little strange and was toying with the watcher a lot more fun.
I think this is my favorite episode so far! I liked the story telling and the descriptions did leave me with strong mental images that I just don't think they'd be able to replicate on screen.
I will say I am scrolling through the episode list and I do not see a clear break in seasons, so could someone let me know where Season 1 ends?

Chapter analysis 218
Now I don't fully mind this chapter, I really do like the hypnos and I think it's a decent transition chapter to the next big plot points.. sort of kinda.. my reactions are mixed.
To start on a very positive note, I fucking love hypnos. This is sarcasm done decently well, along with him calling hades out on his shit is what I desperately needed. Also... I fine it pretty fun that he's just casually dicks out the whole time.
Tumblr media
Now I think it's just a problem with the webtoon spacing but this episode that like... a weird completely blank panel before the title that isn't really on any of the other episodes but again that's a generally small mistake that's not that big a deal.
Now my biggest problem with this chapter is that it has ANOTHER GOD DAMN FLASH BACK. Like jesus even single flash back we get makes me think that season 2 should've ended right after the trail and we should've had season 3 be the ten year time skip, then have a fourth season with all the current shit. Like I went back and counted, out of the 12 episodes we have depending on how you count its either 5 or 6 episodes with out flashbacks... and there are three episodes that are ALL flashbacks.
Tumblr media
If a story has a timeskip but then spends half the time after it to have flash backs.. you shouldn't have done that timeskip. If y'all want to see good time-skips read land of the lustrous. It has multiple massive time skips from anywhere from a month to ten thousand years but it works cause of how to ties into the story. Each time-skip is used to amplify the Main characters isolation, memory loss, and to show the stagnation of the immortal world they live in. The only flash back the land of the lustrous has is a few panels during exposition of event that happened before the story starts, and it never has flash backs to the timeskips.
In Lore olympus the time skip is used to... be able to have romantic moment between the important plot shit. It just feel clunky and makes each episode feel like each one should be done better... the suspense it would build for the kronos plot if done in order, seeing the progression of Persephones powers, seeing hades and Persephone grow apart from each other. Just... it would have been so so much better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now to another thing I really didn't like about this chapter is just.. how hades doesn't have his priorities straight. Hades is supposed to be you know focused how kronos did alot of fucked up shit, but he's worried about wine and hypnos using a doorway to go a realm. Like hades, your more worried about getting paid then not having an hr department.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though again Hypnos calling hades out on his shit along, along with his general vibe and look is a great change of pace. It doesn't feel like lampshading.. tho it's honestly probably what it was for, to have Hades mess up acknowledged but then ignored.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That and also.. I really hope we get more of Morpheus mainly cause of the trans representation... that was never mentions in the story. Like christ when scrolling through the comments I saw two calling Morpheus a 'genderswap'.. so it's clear that even people who have knowledge of the original greek morpheus just think this one is a women and not a trans women.. and it sucks cause this representation sucks.
Tumblr media
Another main problem is again.. the fertility powers that are just a catch all. Why is the tree persephone grew more connected to her fertility powers and not her plant ones? why is just being near the tree enough to give kronos a bunch of power? It's very much just a catch all power that can just be... anything. Also it's really sucks that the fertility powers never really tie into the whole "deconstruction of purity culture".. it's almost never mention to her sexuality in any way.. like the closest they get to that is apollo but that plot has been shaved down and ignored to basically nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing that is really annoying me is how serious scenes are undercut by goofy faces. Which really terribly shown in this episode... like we see hypnos be imprisoned and like have this honestly AMAZING shot of hypnos being inside kronos rib cage like a prison. Like that really cool idea that could have been a completely terrifying panel... but then rs gave hypnos one of the "funny" faces.. tat just completely ruins it. Especially taking into account that he is canonically being fucking tortured. Please please someone redraw this panel and make it look more serious.. cause holy shit I love and hate this panel so much.
Tumblr media
Now I don't fully mind the while child god thing... yet, Its really to early to form any opinions on it till we actually first learn who it is and see how it's dealt with but having the big important plot point lead into a "harhar persephone hot joke" just... the pacing the clash in vibes is just bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again this chapter highlights how bad the transition after the kronos fight was, instead of having a scene catching up with these characters we get persephone admitting to basically ignoring eros... Also like damn eros good job as stealing my insult about her outfit before I even thought of it!
The outfit itself just clashes with her outfits before, Persephone has been shown to prefer longer tight dress, sweater and similar things. This just... isn't it, it feels off and the whole banana purse thing looks odd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll talk about the whole sex conversation with the next chapter.. what I wanna cover is just how.. they talk like a teenage rom-com that's desperately trying to keep a pg-13 rating so talk like middle schoolers who get nervous by just saying the word sex. It just feels.... off..

My School President episode 6
My heart just smiles everytime Gun and Tinn are together. Fourth is so good as Gun, he brings so many layers to the part. I feel like I'm seeing Gun growing up before my eyes.
I continue to appreciate how this show is playing with BL (and general Romance) tropes, both on silly visual level, with all the fantasies and this making of the BL version of a music video, and on a more serious structural level. I'm thinking of Tinn's various not-quite-confessions of his love, and Gun's reaction. The typical trope would be for Gun to be totally oblivious, but this show (and Gun) are too smart for that. He knows that Tinn likes him, but he's afraid, afraid both that he's wrong and that he's right. Being wrong would be heartbreaking and so he wants to stay in this suspended moment of not knowing the truth. And it's scary for him that he's probably right. His reason is the no dating rule, but I suspect that's just an excuse for why he's reluctant. Falling in love is scary! And so the show keeps that tension of not-quite dating going that is often achieved by one character being unrealistically oblivious, but does it in way that feels true to life.
And so I love that this show is just letting them be real and scared and yet still honest and open with each other. They both just feel so human, so much like teenagers growing up and figuring out what it means to love and be loved. Like My Only 12%, (and I Told Sunset About You) this now feel like a coming of age story as well as a BL, as Tinn and Gun are figuring out how to love and care for each other like adults. What's fascinating is that while those other shows did that by moving away from BL tropes, My School President is doing it by embracing them but then turning them inside out to examine them.
I have inchoate thoughts about how QL stories (and Romance in general) are often coming of age stories, as the characters discover their own self in the process of discovering each other. This is especially true of High School characters, but I think it holds for every setting. Old Fashioned Cupcake for example, even there the characters are growing into themselves in order to be able to love each other. But that's another post, a big sprawling one that I won't attempt now. And I do think even with that, My School President is more of a coming of age story than most.
And in terms of tropes, I adored the use of that clear umbrella, how it created a little world for the two of them, and particularly how they were trading off holding it, emphasizing that neither is the seme or uke, they aren't playing roles here of pursuer and pursued, they are just two boys who like each, trying to figure out what to do with all their feelings.
So far I'm less interested in either of the side couples (or side couple? I'm assuming Tiw and Por will be a thing but we've only had the barest hints that it's happening so far). I think because they're given more of the silly teenage shenanigans and that's fun but less compelling to me. I did like all the layers of BL tropes at work in the scene with Sound and Win's "kiss" through the medal.
Perhaps my problem with them is that the rap battle confused me—there Sound was being all mature and supportive of Win, but now he's back to being petty and combative. Was the rap battle only in that somewhat non-diegetic music video from last week? Is it just a mistake in the script or editing?
Also, it's not that important, but I was confused by the scene where they were asking each other the questions in Gun's bed, when just before they had been doing it on the phone. At first I thought it was Gun imaging they were next to each other, but they serious talk about grief and the hug made me think it was happening in real life. Was it just a continuity error? Did I miss a scene transition were Tinn was like, "I'm coming over to cuddle?" Or was it really just a fantasy?
Last thought: the economics of Thai BL being what they are, I appreciate the product placement for allowing these shows to be made. And My School President is doing the best they can with it to make it plot and character relevant. But I still find it annoying.

Hey so y'all know how Splints in that one episode where he disguised himself as a foot soldier he'd complained about his back after he'd kicked his boys ass? If I had to take a guess he probably suffers from back pain from time to time due to not practicing his ninjutsu, possible injuries to his back during his days of fighting for Big Mama and kinda just vibing all day on his armchair and watching tv shows or dramas.
So I've got a head canon:
When Splints first meets the 12 boys after his sons bring them to their dimension he's one of the first people to immediately figure out that 12 Leo has an injury in his knee. After being in the art of ninjutsu for as long as he has he's probably learned to handle injuries and such earned or gained from the art of it as well as spot them rather quickly. Splints watches 12 Leo during training and notices how he'll sometimes favor his uninjured leg over his injured one and put more weight on that unhurt leg and how on some mornings when the weather gets colder or when it's about to storm or when he's pushed himself too hard, 12 Leo will be a lot more sore and aching and he'll have to take more breaks because of it. He'd notice this and in very small unnoticeable ways begin to help him.
Leaving pain pills somewhere for 12 Leo to find easily, leaving the softer pillows and blankets on the sofa for 12 Leo to rest against, having a spare heating pad laying close by should he need it to help ease the aches he's feeling. Once 12 Leo's more comfortable around them Splints will start giving him tips and tricks on how to handle the pains of his knee injury and how to help ease it whenever it gets really bad. 12 Leo of course is a bit hesitant on doing these things because he doesn't want to appear weak or become a burden to the older rat however after seeing how Splints shows no judgement at all he'll start to do the tips and tricks Splints told him about and taught him how to use. Splints would also consult Rise Leo and 12 Donnie for more detailed information on 12 Leo's knee injury and go from there to help him feel more comfortable.
After awhile 12 Leo would be able to function and move a little more easier than he could before, though his injury is always there it's more easier to deal with. And he'll ask Splints how he knew what to do and Splints would reveal that he has problems with his back due to ninjutsu as well and he'd learned how to handle it through trial and error and research. He'd give 12 Leo an understanding fatherly look and tell him that he's glad that he was able to help make him feel better because Splints didn't like seeing 12 Leo in pain. 12 Leo would get a bit choked up and shakily thank him not wanting to break down and Splints would just give him another smile and a gentle pat on his shell to let him know that it was no trouble and that he was happy to be of service.

This time I want to make a short analysis of the "evolution" of garvez, considering Luke and Penelope as separate entities, during the seasons.
In Season 12 Luke is obviously the one most taken, already in love with her, while Penelope (in my opinion) is not at his level. She is probably smitten with him, she has a crush on him (probably since the first time). I think that Penelope doesn't let him in, she doesn't allowed herself to know him as a real person, she keeps him at distance.
Their relationship at the beggining is based on teasing, but is a mutual thing, Luke likes to tease her even more than Penelope. They also flirt a lot. A moment of change is the meeting with Roxy; the fact he has a dog helps a lot. She "uses" it to be a little friendlier with him, making gifs "for Roxy", but obviously also for him.
Their relationship evolved anyway (or better, despite her effort) from just coworkers to... something more, but "friends" is not the right word to describe them. They share two big and hard moments, both about Reid (ep 14 and ep 17). Even in this occasions you can see that Luke is the one who makes all, he tries everything to make her feel better, he cares a lot, he acts like she is his priority. He also makes a declaration (If I ever do become) that she tries to ignore.
But the moment that is the bigger proof of his love for her, is another (ep 11), almost invisible: when he is talking with Walker and Pen arrives, Luke feels/senses her presence, smiling and then he changes his mood because notices that she is not happy.

-
In Season 13 we have little clues about Luke feelings for her. He is worried for her and still cares a lot, especially when he discovers about Battle (ep 5). We have even in this season a "you're my priority" moment (ep 1), when Luke leaves JJ to run and console Penelope, crying before Walker body in the car.
But we can see a change in their relationship. Is the only one when she never calls him "Newbie". Their flirting and teasing almost stops. We have two moments of flirt (ep 3 and ep 11).
The reason is not only in the fact he meets Lisa and starts a story with her. Because the change is before this. You can see it in the first episodes, for example when they discuss with Spencer about "Lisa problem" or when he asks her "your cat has things?". They behave in a more comfortable way, both. You can see that he feels the same (strong love) for her, in little things. Like in the way he still looks at her or how easy Luke decides to stand by her, right in the "Linda problem" discussion.
And, even this one before Lisa, they shares a sweet and important moment: he asks her to help him with Lou and Phil. And in that they seem a couple, not friends, not just coworkers (ep 7).
You can see that her crush on his is increasing during her talk with Lisa. The way she talks, her faces, the embarrassment, the fact she want to point out that they are just coworkers (not even friends), and especially that he is not her type, despite she knows that others think he is funny, smart and "easy on the eyes". And the way she looks at Luke when he reaches them. Her smile.
Then Linda Barnes splits up the team. Luke thinks at her many times (ep 16), as he does when she is away, for the parole (ep 20). You can see that his feelings are still there, just for the way he reacts when she comes back at BAU (ep 16).
But is exactly in San Francisco that we see that Penelope finally admits her feelings for Luke, pausing just on their pic together, and with a so little smile (ep 20). I think that she is almost in love with him. So close to it. But she doesn't already reach his level.
Tumblr media
-
In Season 14 they move forward in their relationship. They finally become friends. Penelope allows him to get close to her. But the teasing is still there, and also the flirt. My opinion (that I already shared many times) is that Lisa is like an armor, for Penelope. She knows that Luke is not a betrayal type and that she will never try to do something out of place with a busy man. So, she can finally be herself with him. For once without fears.
Even in this season we have a "you're my priority" moment (ep 1): when Penelope is kidnapped with Reid, Matt says she wasn't part of the plan, and Luke replies "no, but she is now". The way Luke looks at her when they come off the elevator...
His love is still strong and steady. Despite this, when he lives a hard moment (ep 6), when Phil is killed, he doesn't ask her help or support, but is clear that Penelope would have done everything for make him feel better.
Maybe for this, maybe not, but when she has to bear his presence and to work with him (ep 8), because he can't go on the field, she acts again as the queen of ice. She is distant, cold, she says she doesn't care about his opinion, she breaks down his enthusiasm about the "dynamic duo". But still calls him by his name.
And exactly in this episode, and after all her cool attitude, we see their first hug. And even a kiss on her cheek. It's a sweet sweet moment. The focus is not on them, because the party is about Rossi and Krystall engagement. But it's so important for their relationship. He stares at her hugging other persons and then asks, almost begs her to share the joy with him, and she gives him that honor.
We have a moment of big flirt (ep 14), before Rossi eyes, when he admits that she is great (only at work?), and she totally plays with him.
Then, right at the end of the season (ep 15), we can see again them as a couple, during Rossi and Krystall wedding. They don't just dance together, sharing the joy, no. They also shares a slow dance. Something really romantic, not just sweet. It's not a case that the other couples we see dancing it, are all canon ones and engaged (Rossy/Krystall, JJ/Will).
We can say that Luke loves in this season is steady and increases just a bit, while Penelope's almost reaches him. She is really in love with him, but there are anyway few bricks between them.
Tumblr media
-
In Season 15 we have another change. At the beginning (ep 1), when Lisa ghost is still there, Penelope acts with him in a... friendly/warm way. They shares laughs and gazes, even if they seem more a couple than friends.
But, as we will discover almost at the end of the season, his relationship is not going well, in fact he doesn't mention her after ep 1. So, Penelope starts again to be a little cold. She calls him again Alvez. More she keeps him at distance and more his feelings increase. It seems impossible, but Luke love for her really grows during this season.
Penelope doesn't ask directly his help, but chooses him when she has to go on the field (Elizabeth apartment), and looks at him, clearly searching for his support, his approvation, all episode (ep 4). Her love for Luke increases because he is just so stubborn, and in that way he has finally the chance to show her he still wants to be the someone. She talks with him about her stalker, not so happy, but then, when she thanks him (it was very kind of you), it's clear that she is not so upset about her opening up to him, maybe the right opposite.
We don't have a "you are my proprity" moment in this season, or maybe yes, if we consider the last episode and her farewell party. But in this one is Luke that risks two times his life. And in both occasions she is so worried for him, more for the bomb (ep 3) that when they kidnapped him with Matt (ep 5).
After this, the flirt and teasing grows. We can guess (but we don't have hard proof) that is because he breaks up with Lisa. Anyway, the flirt becomes really shameless and the "fault" is more of Luke, than Pen. She calls him Newbie again (last time was 12x16), but he almost declares his thoughts on her, when he admits that he workships at her throne and she must know it (ep 7).
Right after this we see Luke tells to Spencer, Tara, Matt and Pen about his breaking with Lisa (ep 9). But he looks all time just at Pen. He watches carefully her reaction. And she seems... scared? Then it's her time to share something, that she is thinking to leave the team. Luke is the only one that smiles, and she asks if he wants to get rid of her. He hurries to say is not so, but also makes her understand how much he knows her, because Luke, since he met her, saw her many times upset, crying for their job. They share a sweet and so important moment, when she says they are family, looking at him, and he does the same.
Luke starts his courthisp, he gives to her and the girls milkshakes, but he chooses her favorite place. It's so clear that Penelope tells him "stop making me like you" and he, so smug, replies "never". During her farewell party (ep 10) he is even more unbashed. When she arrives, he gives her the glass he poured for himself, telling her that this is gonna be the first of many. And he will keep his word. He dances with her all night long, and when is not close, he keeps watching at her. When they are with others, he still find a way to stay close her. Then, he takes her aside and asks her out. Considering the way she replies, the amazement and then joy in her face, is so clear they feel the same for each other. The last (but not least) thing in this season, is their hug. The way he literally drowning in her arms.
Tumblr media
-
Season 16 starts 3 years after last one. We have to take it into account. We can see, since the beginning (ep 1), that Luke has no intention to hide his feelings, still there, for her: the way he starts almost all their flirting moments, his kiss on her cheek to thank her. And also his jealousy, when she start to hung out with the wrong person.
This season starts with Luke love on the rise. Again, it seemed impossible, but is clear that, no matter we know that their date didn't work, he is so in love with her, so hopeless. It's canon.
He says they are friends and not frenemies, he doesn't want to be her enemy, he thinks that now he is more for her than the Newbie, the guy she has to hate. That's why he tells Tara he has no worry to let the "Garcia most hated" place to Tyler (ep 5). He will regret it.
But we have hints about their relationship, during the ride. Penelope thanks him to watch Sergio (ep 4) and here we have the only time (except for firs episode, when she teases him a lot) where she flirts with him first. She seems surprised when Luke tells that her idea is great, in his opinion. In this episode Luke shows all his support and approvation. He pushes her to talk with Emily, she doesn't want to, because her idea involves him. They arguing like a married couple. When Prentiss doesn't understand her idea, he explains it better. And when the boss shows her approvation too, Luke looks at her as to say "I told you" and she looks away almost immediately, shy. He believes in her idea more than her.
The ironical thing is that Luke will regret to push her to talk with Tyler. Because the dynamic between her and TG seems a copy (a draft, a bad copy) of their. Enemies to lovers. She can't stand him. He gives her a cat. She sees him in a bad moment, she wants to help him. And in this way, she crosses a line she shouldn't have. Luke starts to sense that there is something big going on in there really soon (ep 6). Just after her first kiss with TG.
She is so afraid, when the bomb explodes and they lose the contact with JJ and Luke. She says she regrets all the mean things she says. And, in my opinion, she regrets also to not have tell him enough good things. That she cares a lot about him (no matter in a friendly or romantic way). But then they find him, too soon, and she is so busy, with TG and the team coming back. She puts all her feeling in the hug, even if with JJ as third wheel. You can see that this time she doesn't want to come off his arms.
Anyway, she shares a hard talk with TG, maybe she feels understood, in a deep way, and TG too. That's why he tries to kiss her. She goes away, but then, she kisses him. And runs to BAU. The fact she knows something about TG sister, but that wasn't on her file, is too weird for Luke. This is the first hint. He will not stop wonder about it until he will crash on the harsh reality. His suspects grow when she doesn't tease him or reply in the same way to his provocation "is this all you could find?" (ep 8). He tells her: where is the snark? And then, when she laughs and tells him to be less hard on himself, he turns to Tara and says "she is gettin some". And is not happy at all.
Again, the situtation doesn't seem well-balanced, his love is stronger, so much that he wants to be her rock, no matter he is dying inside, seeing her so bad for another man. His reaction when she tells him who is the man she is seeing, is so hard (ep 9). Luke is good to refrain himself, but doesn't hide his jealousy and also his pain. He begs her to stop talking, he doesn't want to hear all the deatails about her sex with TG. I think that Luke noticed the traits in common between him and TG. And that makes the pain even stronger. Because he just wonders "why him and not me?".
We see their date. Penelope tells him that there is surely something between them, but "not like that". Luke doesn't agree, his expression says all. But he also doesn't reply. He seems so hopeless and so in love with her. When she tells him she is sure that their soulmates are outhere, he keeps looks at her and laugh, without happiness, asking right "where"? Because he knows he can't looking for his right one; he already found it and is right now before him.
During the years they shared a lot about emotional sphere. Their lack is on the physical one. We got 4 hugs, 2 kisses on the cheek (always by him) and touching (almost always for his initiative). My opinion (just a thought, that I had taking with a friend that doesn't watch CM) is that she could believe that his love for her is only for the way she is inside, for her sensitivity, for her geniality... That her charm comes just from it. Because Luke many times showed his admiration for her abilities. But never said something about her figure, not even "you're beautiful" in a friendly way. He made compliment on her body only with eyes. But is not enough, to beat her fears. While TG, with his attempt to kiss her, admits his attraction immediately. But Luke is in love with her completely. He is clearly attracted by her, but his focus is more on her inside, and that's good. This is a true and strong love. A flame that will keep burn.
Anyway, Tyler lies to her (ep 9) and she knows it. She walks in a worried way through the bullpen and Luke hears her and teases her. But she doesn't want to play and so he understands that he is about to find the truth. Finally. End of the agony. He pushes her to talk, she tries to run away and then she shares all. Too much. But we already considered it. The fact is that Tyler uses her text to pin Rossi, then gets a bullet by Sicarius. Emily sent her with Luke, JJ and Will to stop Tyler and find Rossi. And Luke decides to be her shoulder again. He consoles her on the jet. He tells her to stay with him, until she finds TG. He helps his rival and meawhile reassuring her.
Luke keeps his eye on her in the office (ep 10). He proposes to stay with her while JJ and Will goes on the field. Because he knows that there is too much at stake, between Rossi and TG situtation. And that she will need his support. And the moment comes. His behavior is so perfect, in that occasion, that something inside Pen unclocks. She starts talking about her feelings, her fears, the sensation that everything is going bad.
And he doesn't lie to her, not even a little white lie. Instead, he makes another big declaration: "Maybe if we lean on each other, we will find the strenght to get through this together". It's not "I'm here for you" but "I'm here for you and I know you are here for me". And the emphasis is, in this whole scene, right on the "us". She nods and they hug. It's the first time that Luke doesn't seem in paradise while he has her in his arms. He is too worried. She comes off and tells him that she wants to do this, because they need "us". He agrees. And then, she says "me and you". She seems scared by herself. She probably never thought she would have told him something like that. Luke echoes her. Then his love is black on white with his concern on the fact the tea he took her is hot.
Anyway, this is the first time Penelope accepts to show her vulnerability with Luke. But, despite the fact she wants to be always the shoulder to cry on for others, she will never do it when the problem is hers. She doesn't ask help. Not even with Derek. Think about the post Battle situation (ep 3x10). Morgan wanted to be there for here, but she sent him away. This behavior is reflected even on her romantic relationships. For me, it's the reason why she refused Kevin proposal and ran away from Shane. We think that Luke has commitment issues, but in my opinion even Penelope does.
And, for me, Penelope is scared by her own feeling for Luke. Because she didn't want to let him in, and he did it anyway. She can't keep believe that he doesn't feel anything for her, after the date. Luke tells her that she knows how to pick them and is so true. She always (almost, Sam is out of the list) chosen the wrong one. Luke is so different from her usual boyfriend. He is a good guy. Even Morgan told her so. And her problem is that he cares too much about her. He always wants to be her hero, her rock, and he did it, no matter her effort to not let him. While TG is life-threating, she must know that Luke has at least still a crush on her, so his so not selfish behavior confuses her. And that’s why she finally shows her fragility and also, this is even more important, accepts his support. She doesn’t just allow him to help her, she wants it. And, meanwhile, she also finally looks at him like a real man. A man that could have romantic intention on her. They keep the “us/me and you” thing along the episode. They come off the elevator hugging each other. And, after the funeral, they are aside, he pours a glass of wine for both, then asks her how she is going and, finally, she just tells him the truth. He tries a joke to make her feel better, then, it happens. They shared a “you really know me” moment. He reads her mind and immediately recognizes Dickens quote. The way she looks at him is a clear sign of her love. And Luke is on the same way. He is so shy when tells her he just knows the quote. Why he knows? We know. And maybe Penelope is about to understand it.

About the next season… if they want to make them relationship grow, they have to explore more the physical sphere and to exchange the roles. We need to see Luke’s vulnerability and Pen consoling, helping him. She would have already done it (14x6), so I’m sure she will.
Like the others, I would have liked to see them together before, but the fact their bond growing season by season, in a slow way, it’s not a bad thing, for me. It makes it stronger. With deep roots.
