THE LAST DND GAME AND WILL'S POWERS??? bruhhhhhhhhhh
So we all know that the DnD games are used as foreshadowing alllll the timeeee. WELL, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THIS~
Tumblr media
In Hellfire's final DnD session, Vecna didn't die so the Party has to fight him again. They need a substitute for a missing member, so they look everywhere, but come up squat. (Sidenote: the people Mike asks for help have similarities to Will! Artists, nerds...) Finally, they find an unexpected sub: Erika. An OG party member rolls an 11 and misses– but the sub rolls a nat 20 and defeats Vecna.
Who fails to defeat Vecna first?
It's pretty clear that Eleven will be the one to try and fail to defeat Vecna. Her powers have been heavily leaned on for help in every Season– this time, not even Eleven can stop Vecna.
But the substitute can.
Who could be a substitute for Eleven?
Who is capable of fulfilling her role?
Tumblr media
Who has been as integral to the overarching story as Eleven has?
Who has been compared to Eleven time and time again across the series?
Tumblr media
Which character has been denied autonomy throughout the show, constantly being kidnapped, possessed, hurt and forgotten?
Which character deserves to fight back against the force that has terrorised them for so long?
Tumblr media
Who did the series begin with in the first place?
That's right...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
...
...
...
It's Steve. Steve's going to defeat Vecna, and he'll do it in those sweet-ass sunnies.

The Wonder Twins Sketches
These were some really early sketches of Will and El. They aren't necessarily accurate to the twins current looks or plotlines, but they exist, I guess, and I felt like sharing them.
Tumblr media
yes these are drawn on lined paper. Yes I did do these in Geography and Maths class.

“Would you stop it?”
Will freezes, confused and shocked now, his yelling ceasing at once.
Mike shouts again. “Would you stop yelling at me? It happens so often now!”
The other boy’s anger returns in a moment. “Then maybe you should stop giving me a reason to!”
The hurt in Mike’s eyes, returning to Will’s glare, shows his knowingness enough.
“You’ve changed, Mike! You stopped caring. You stopped asking. And you never, never, used to do that! What happened?” Will’s voice quavers. “What did I do wrong?”
Mike’s eyes go wide with horror, reaching out his hands to comfort him in a touchless surrender. “Will, no, you didn’t do anything-”
“You can’t even touch me, Mike. Don’t pretend like you haven’t noticed it.” Will’s voice is much less furious, now. It’s upset. “Can’t hug me properly, can’t put a hand on my shoulder unless I’m scared. And it fucking sucks!”
Mike’s taken aback by the profanity. Will never swears.
He continues. “It sucks, because I’ve been looking for a little fucking comfort. You used to care. I care, so why can’t you? What have I done wrong?”
A sob is let out, one that makes Mike’s heart rip itself in half. “Will, please, come on, I’m sorry. I- I…”
He stands there numbly for a moment, a short one, because suddenly he’s wrapping himself around Will, holding him close. He fears what could happen, Will pushing him away and snarling disgusted words at him, a repugnant glint in his eyes.
But it doesn’t happen. So he stands there, holding him.
“All I ever wanted to do was spend my life, whatever’s left of it, with you.” He bites his bottom lip hard. “But that’s so stupid. It’s so dumb.”
Mike shakes his head. “No, no it’s not.”
“It is.” Will snivels. “It’s so idiotic that I’m crying to you like I’m fucking five again. That… that I…”
When he trails off, Mike speaks again. “I’ve spent my whole life saying that.”
Will pauses, puzzled. “What?”
“All the time, I used to- I still do act adult, like I know what’s gonna happen. What I’m doing. But there’s only a handful of things I really know.”
He continues. “I know the sky’s blue. I know my name is Mike. I know that you’ve always been my best friend.” Mike lets out a small, sad laugh. “But even those don’t stay true. The sky can go gray, my real, full name is Michael…”
He smiles, shakily and unsure. “And sometimes… sometimes I’m in love with you.”
He feels Will tense in his arms, only pulling away far enough to look him in the eyes. “Which I’m lying about right now, because I’m in love with you all of the time. Every day.” His smile’s slowly crumbling, scared and terrified and falling all at once. “But I’m so shit at showing it. I’m so bad at communicating, at showing I care.”
And that’s when he says it. “But you’re not.”
Will’s eyes widen. “I understand. I know what you’ve been saying, and I see how dumb it was that I couldn’t say it, in the quietest way, back. So, if you’re gonna be loud, and honest to me, then I’ll be loud and honest to you.”
Will’s heart skips about two beats; one for each of them. He’s breathing, and it’s so loud. It’s loud, and he knows, then. He feels. Lets himself guide without much thought at all.
He kisses Mike. And immediately, almost too quickly, Mike’s kissing back, holding him and swearing things silently that are too noisy to hear through their passionate embrace. It’s messy, but not rough, and they’re honest. They’re telling the truth, now.
They stand there like that for what feels like hours, holding and caring and showing it. Being too loud in that quiet. The first time, the first kiss, that first song that hums out in the nonexistent space between them. They can’t get close enough.
When they break for air, loud and obnoxious air that they require to live, Will says it. “I love you, too.”
And Mike laughs. “Can I get a redo?”
Will’s brows furrow at the ridiculous request. “A redo? On what?” He laughs. “You were doing so well already!”
And the other boy shakes his head, beaming. “I didn’t say it first. Like, the real thing.”
“Well, now I get the credit.”
“Fine. Sure.” But Will relents, so Mike speaks on. “I love you.”
Will grins wider. “I love you, too.” Then, after pressing a kiss to Mike’s enthused lips, he says, “Even though I said it first.”

I hope in season 5, Will uses all his bottled up emotions to defeat Vecna. He just fucking kills Vecna with all the power he has in him, which is a lot of power. His nose is bleeding and half of his hair got singed off, but he's raising his hand towards the monster and using his sadness and rage to kill him.
And Mike is just standing there, watching his friend, with Hopper's sword in his hands. He's watching Will use the powers they didn't know he had. He's in awe.
Will collapses to the floor and Vecna is gone. Mike drops his sword and runs over to the other boy's side. "Will," he pressed his fingers against his neck to check his pulse.
"I'm okay," Will said weakly. He touched Mike's hand and leaned into it. "Did we do it?"
"We? We? Will, that was all you! You were amazing! You were like a mage," Mike said excitedly.
"And you were a knight," Will said, smiling. "That's also really cool. Your fighting is probably really good. You probably could have saved me if I was dying. My own personal knight..."
His eyes twinkled and Mike's eyes widened. He felt something inside of him that he's felt many times before. "And you could be my personal mage," he said, leaning down slowly.
Will lifted his head slightly and their lips touched. Mike closed his eyes and Will followed him.
It was peaceful and quiet. It was lovely. It was much needed.
Will smiled into the kiss and so did Mike.
It was perfect.

isn't strange that will knew how to use this type of gun but jonathan didn't? we know their father taught them. or jonathan was hesitating to answer because he has a trauma from when lonnie forced him to kill a bunny? i have another theory, it's probably not true because their father is an asshole and i doubt he cared that much. but we also know that lonnie suspected that will is gay and called him slurs, so maybe he only taught will so he can protect himself in case of a hate crime? i don't really believe in this, but like it's a possibility. either way it's sad.

Part 1 - Fic
The three o'clock bell rang two minutes late. El Byers jumped out of her seat and sprinted out of the classroom. She had to find her brother. Will should have art now. El groaned, the art classrooms were on the other side of the school.
As she ran El bumped into someone.
"Jane! Watch where you're going!" Cried a nasty voice.
El looked up and her heart skipped a beat. A tall girl with a blonde, low ponytail and a face crafted by the gods was standing in front of her. Oh no.
"Sorry Angela." She muttered as she ran around the blonde girl.
Angela smirked.
"Watch out Hopper!" She calls after El.
After what seemed to be a hundred years, El finally got to the art block.
El peeked into a window, A4. Yes! There was Will!
She opened the door and jumped.
"Will!"
"Jane!" He cried, turning away from his canvas. Will walked over to the door where El stood.
El was always called Jane Hopper at school, it was to keep her real identity secret. If the wrong people found out the true story about Will and Eleven Byers, their whole family could become subject to torture or something far worse...
"C'mon, we're meeting Max out the front of school!" El urged him.
"Alright, let's go then."
El basically dragged Will out of the classroom.
"How was art?" El asked Will.
"It was fun. I'm painting a dragon!"
"One from dnd?"
"Yeah. How was woodwork?"
"Eh, it was OK. I wish Max was there."
"It's a shame the school won't let her do woodwork, she's really good at it."
Hawkins High wouldn't allow Max to take woodwork on account of it being "too dangerous for her because she's blind." El had seen Max drop into a 20 foot halfpipe, no helmet. What was really so dangerous about a hammer?
“Max has this friend who’s transferring here, I think you’d get along well. Like me and Max!” said El, jumping to the bottom of a flight of stairs.
Will gave her a knowing grin.
“What?”
“Nothing, I’m just glad you’ve got a friend like Max.”  Will replied.
He was glad. After living as a lab rat for twelve years, El deserved to have a good best friend. She'd struggled with bullying since she started school in 9th grade. People picked at her limited speech and lack of social skills. Will had never been able to stand up to bullies, but Max Mayfield? Yeah, Will Byers will never forget the day she poured half a gallon of strawberry milk into the bags of Troy Walsh and his dickhead friends.
Finally, the Byers twins reached the entrance of the school buiding.
El sprinted out the doors, having spotted Max. She could really run when she felt like it.
Will followed her. He could also run when he felt like it... He really didn't feel like it.
“Max!” El called out to her friend, knowing Max wouldn’t see her coming.
“Jane!” Called Max, swinging her head around, trying to place what direction El’s voice had come from.
“Jane slow dow--” Will stopped mid protest, he saw the person standing next to Max.
He was the most handsome person Will had ever seen. Long black hair, a black hoodie paired with black jeans. Lots of black actually, because he was also wearing black converse all stars.
"H-hi, I'm Will!" Will's face resembled a beetroot.
"Hey, I'm Mike. Nice to meet you!"
Will beamed, and Mike smiled back. Next to them, El was almost suffocating Max in a bone-crushing hug. They whispered something to eachother, and then fell apart, El had a mischievous glint in her eyes, and Max a meddling smirk.
El turned to Mike.
"Hey Jane."
"Hey Mike!"
She attempted to hide her trouble-making tone, but Will knew it all to well to be fooled. He was about to say something when Max slid over.
"Have a good day Will?" She asked. She folded her arms. She was definitely up to something.
"Yeah, pretty good." Will replied, slightly suspicious.
Mike turned to face everyone.
"I've got to go. A tour of the school or something."
"Bye Mike!" Cried El, jumping and waving, overenthusiastic as ever.
Max settled for a simple "C ya."
Will waved with a smile.
"Nice to meet you Mike. See you around?"
"For sure!" Mike agreed. Will's heart gave a flutter.
Damn it! A crush was the last thing Will needed to deal with at the moment. Honestly, as if he didn't have enough on his plate.
Mike waved as he walked into the entrance of the school building. Rows of lockers were scattered throughout the front building.
He's pretty cute, Mike thought. How does Max find the cute ones? She can't even see!
Will, El and Max rode down the street towards their neighborhood. Max on her skateboard, Will on his bike and El on rollerblades. El was surprisingly good at rollerskating, Will had been suspicious she was using her powers to steady herself, but no, El just had natural talent.
"Where'd you meet Mike?" Will asked Max, in what was supposed to be a casual tone, but probably wasn't.
Max paused skating. She brought her hand up to her face and frowned in thought.
“I think... Yeah we met in elementary school. Back when we went to the Grammar School. He was in my class in the second grade.”
Hawkins Grammar School was a big fancy building on the other side of town. It took kindergarten through to seniors. All the rich, snobby kids went there. Well, most of them. A few, like Angela and Steve Harrington went to Hawkins High.
“You went to the Grammar School?” Will was surprised. The Byers had only ever been to the public schools. The grammar school was expensive, and Joyce never saw the appeal of it anyway. Why pay extra just for the same thing?
“For a couple of years, yeah. Until Mom and my stepdad got married. Billy didn’t want to go to the grammar school, and so I had to move.” Max rolled her eyes - old habits.
“Did you ever meet Dustin?” Asked El. Dustin Henderson was a good friend of Will’s. In elementary school, Dustin was on a scholarship at the Grammar school. It paid half the yearly cost, but when Dustin’s dad had passed away, the Hendersons couldn't cover the cost on only his mom's minimum wadge job.
“Yeah, he and Mike were friends, so I knew him a little bit, but it wasn’t really ‘til Middle School when I started dating Lucas that we actually became friends.”
“Then we met through Dustin and Lucas.” Will added.
Lucas Sinclair was Will's other best friend. They'd been friends since elementary school. Lucas and Will always wanted to play "wizards and warriors" at recess. Wizards and warriors mostly consisted of waving sticks around and trying to speak in old English. Is it surprising they love dnd?
Max nods, “Then I met Jane well, you know when...” Max trailed off.
Max and El had met in a very unusual manner. But that was a story for another day.
“Race you to our street!” Yelled El, already flying ahead on her rollerblades.
“Unfair!” Cried Max, pushing her skateboard and cruising down the street.
Will chuckled and peddled faster, determined to beat El. He can’t let her win three days in a row.
***
The Byers' kitchen is cozy, with it's strawberry wallpaper and marble bench. On said bench sits El Byers. She has a smug grin on her face.
“Three days in a row!” She cried. Will shook his head. Siblings are infuriating.
"You cheated."
"Sure."
“Hurry up with the snacks. We’re supposed to meet Max back at the park in two minutes.”
El reached for a few cookies, opening the pantry and moving the food with her powers. Then she shoved them into her bag.
“Done!” She cried as she jumped off the bench. She wiped the blood from her nose. Should El use her powers for household tasks? No, probably not. Does she do it anyway? Absolutely.
“Let’s go then.”
A snapchat notification sounded. El checked her phone. El's phone case was covered in tiny sitck-on dimonties.
“Max just wanted to let us know Mike will be at the park.” El informed him, the ghost of a badly concealed grin crossed her face.
“That's okay. I don’t mind.” Maybe he and Mike can hang out when El and Max inevitably ditch him to use El’s powers in some incredibly irresponsible way that Will should reprimand them for but can’t actually be bothered to. (What Joyce and Hop don’t know won’t hurt them.)
"So, what do you think of Mike?"
Will can hear the grin on El's face. It sings I'm up to no gooooood agaaaaiiiin. Will groaned, if Mike's transferring to Hawkins High, then he'll be hearing a lot more singing grins.
"I don't know, I only spoke two sentences to him!"
"Hm." El seemed unconvinced. She typed something into her phone, then slid it into her bag.
"We should go meet Max and Mike now!" El urged Will, as though she wasn't just wasting time gloating about cheating.
Will followed his twin sister out of the kitchen. He turned off the lights, wiping the blood from his own nose. The scar where a 012 tattoo used to be got smeared with red.
"You shouldn't use your powers for silly things, like turning off the lights." El reprimanded him, waggling her finger and tutting.
"Hypocrite!"
"You shouldn't!"
"I'll zap you!" Will wiggled his fingers at El, squinting his eyes in mock concentration.
El chuckled, it's fun to wind up her brother sometimes. Will has never used his powers to hurt anyone. Except Brenner, but he deserved it.
El and Will Byers leave the Byers house, each with blood on their sleeves.

@bylertruther's post has got me thinking about jonathan driving all the way into the city to lonnie's house to look for will. jonathan volunteered first to go find him, and then ignored hopper's explicit instructions to stay put ("stay here with your mom, she needs you"), went to school only to put up will's missing poster, and then skipped the rest of the day and willingly went back to a place where he'd have to face his abuser - the man who walked out on them, the man who left jonathan to work two jobs at sixteen just to make ends meet, the man who was supposed to protect their family but ended up being the person who they needed protection from - just on the off chance that will, his little brother who he loves more than anything, would be there. just because will might have needed his brother there too.

Lighting and Mike and Will and El - Full Analysis (Pt. 7)
This one is just going to focus on El getting arrested. There’s quite a bit there to work with in terms of light, which surprised me at first but.
It makes sense.
(Also stuff in brackets? Not related to the light analysis. I just kept getting distracted by colours and characters,
anyways-)
S4:E3 - Getting Arrested
Tumblr media
So, the cops show up at the door. Will and Jonathan are in frame and the lighting is normal.
Tumblr media
Then El and Mike come down the stairs and Will’s lighting gets a little brighter. Compared to Mike and El, it almost seems like Will is the main focus of this shot.
But El is the one getting arrested.
This also happens before they fully know what’s going on, so it makes sense that Will’s lighting shines like that. This is a group shot with Mike clearly looking in.
While our view does come from the door, there are a lot of perspectives there. Our two prominent narrators, Mike and El, are also present. So it’s more likely than not that the light is being dictated by one of them.
Tumblr media
And here is where I think that this is fully Mike’s perspective. Like the scene with the disco ball, Mike’s attention is on El again, but only because it has to be. Something bad is happening, she’s getting arrested and they just fought, and this is where his attention is drawn to her.
But her face is still half in shadow, similar to Mike’s perspective of her at Rink O’ Mania. I don’t think that Mike is necessarily scared of her here, but more so scared for her. But with how Mike saw her at Rink O’ Mania, it could be either one.
Tumblr media
And Mike, in El’s perspective, is carrying that same light from before. Even though we know that the light doesn’t really naturally fall like that on him. I think that’s her shoulder in bottom left of the shot as well, indicating an over the shoulder view.  (I should look up what that’s actually called)
(Oh! It’s called an Over-The-Shoulder shot or and OTS shot. It can indicate and understanding in a conversation between two characters?? I’m looking at this and it’s really cool. And like the switch from over the shoulder to single view can contrast that understanding?? !!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!! And there are things called POV shots! Reading this, it’s saying that it starts with a character being established as looking at something and then a first person view. It’s like the second to last picture I put in this post with Mike behind the grate. That’s so cool!!!!!!
might make a post about different types of shots though so I can have it as a resource. And because it’s really fucking cool
anyways, sorry, back to the analysis- )
Tumblr media
When El is in the car, there is a window between her and Mike. Mike and barriers is a reoccurring theme this season, but this is one of the first times it comes up this explicitly.
The lighting here is following El’s narration. But what’s interesting is that Mike’s face is beginning to look bit less bright. Like when Mike left the room and we were briefly in Will’s perspective. But we’re still in El’s perspective.
Tumblr media
And now we see Mike’s view (OTS shot, so cool) of El. Again, the light on her face is normal, even a little dimmer than we’d expect on a character.
Tumblr media
Switching back to El’s perspective once more, we can see that Mike’s face is still half shaded.
El might be realizing something here about her and Mike’s relationship.
Also i forgot to mention it before, but her and Mike are both wearing blue plaid, but Mike’s has yellow stripes and El’s has red. El’s costume carries through the rest of the season and it’s really cool to see her slowly loose all the blue from her outfit. I think she does realize that she needs to let go of Mike at the end of it, so it’s not all bad.
Character growth is always nice.
Tumblr media
We’re in Mike’s narration here because El is gone. This frame has Mike, Jonathan and Will in mostly normal lighting. Will is a little brighter but it’s not to much of a concern yet.
Tumblr media
Until he starts talking and puts an arm in from of Jonathan and Mike. The angelic lighting starts to return as soon as Mike’s attention is further drawn to him.
Also, Will’s shirt here is blue, red and yellow (and white but that’s less important-I think. Anything's possible). In a few of the Rink O’ Mania shots, Will was framed with mostly blue and yellow light but also a few small red ones. Like when They’re in the booth, the red light shines on Will’s side first in the reflection on the divider (disco ball in the middle), and when him and Mike are arguing, there is a red exit sign in the background.
I think that the red in Will’s outfit and framing is indicative of one of two things: Will and El being similar people. or Mike seeing El where Will is/being aware of her.
(With will and el being similar people, I mean that they’re very much siblings at this point. They’ve had tones of parallels throughout the series and if there is a bond that can’t be broken, it’s Will and El’s. We call them twins all the time but, it really is what their relationship is like. A key difference between Will and El, and Henry, is that Will and El don’t hurt people without reason. Without good reason. Season one, Will grabbed a shotgun because he was being chased by whatever kidnapped him. But we never saw a shot fired, even then. And El has only hurt people when she feels extremally threatened- with Angela she tried to make peace before Angela went too far- and when they’re hurting her friends. Henry is far more self righteous than them.
I keep getting distracted, my god
back to the analysis, again-)
I didn’t go too in depth into the light colours at Rink O’ Mania (there was a lot going on) but it’s kind of neat.
Tumblr media
Back to El, she’s being taken away. She looks back out at Mike who ran out to the van.
Tumblr media
We can tell because of the grate that we’re seeing though her eyes. This is also the second barrier for Mike this season (visually represented, there are other barriers like fitting in at school and other non-visual metaphors).
She sees mike completely in shadow here. At this point in her narration, her view of Mike has changed.
Tumblr media
We can see, going closer to Mike, that this lighting isn’t the same as what El saw. There is light on Mike’s face, but El didn’t see it.
El knows that Mike doesn’t love her, not in the way she wants him to. His monologue was such a disaster because she knows, and she knows that he lies all the time.
One last thing about costuming here, with the blue plaid, is that we see the yellow and blue disappear from Mike and El’s respective outfits. It’s like El was trying to be like Mike, and Mike was trying to be the things that El likes. It’s also really cute that yellow is one of El’s favourite colours because her and Will are really similar. But also- ( i can’t find the picture but)
In one of the shots with Mike on El’s bed, the picture visible in the corner of El’s Mike shrine was a cut out of mike surrounded by yellow paper. And in the car, driving home from Rink O’ Mania, Mike is framed by yellow again.
A lot of what’s going on with Mike and El seems to be them embracing who they are as people. With blue and yellow disappearing, they’re not preforming themselves for other people anymore, they’re just themselves.
Will being represented by yellow also tells us a lot about Mike.
