did some casual google research into the "traditional chinese medicine is fueling poaching" thing because something seemed...fishy about it. this may not be my place to say so correct me if i'm wrong but something seems kinda racist about the way people in rich, mostly white countries talk about poaching elsewhere in the world
So, tiger poaching: the line usually trotted out is that the tiger's main threat is poaching because its body parts are in demand in China and elsewhere as part of traditional Chinese medicine, but there are some problems with this characterization: in 2022 I think there were like 150 tigers poached, which is really bad, but China is a nation of well over a billion people, and a not-insignificant amount of tiger parts are being trafficked elsewhere (including the USA).
And a lot of these tiger parts are being bought as symbols of wealth and status, not for "medicinal" purposes. iirc one of the main categories of product that's been seized is tiger hides
It seems like a mischaracterization to say there's a "demand" in China for tiger parts when it's like, a couple hundred rich assholes.
In general people are so stupid and hostile about the issue of poaching to the point where they celebrate when poachers are killed by animals which is like. You know the rich assholes aren't killing the animals themselves right? They're hiring some poor desperate rural person who is trying to put food in their mouth
And with stuff like bushmeat, that's significantly made up of just people who are hunting wild animals for food. When folks talk about "cracking down on" poaching are they actually punishing rich assholes who kill for fun or are they throwing some poor person in prison for being poor. The answer has to include uplifting the people who turn to these activities because they have to support themselves and their families

hi! i saw you talking about the mystery dog disease and you said we shouldnt be feeding deer and im jw if its just a general dont feed wild animals cause its dangerous/bad for them thing or if its something else related to transferrable disease? (or both?) WAIT UNLESS YOU MEANT DONT FEED DEER TO YOUR DOGS?? THEN NVM CANCEL THIS POST LOL
it's not a good idea to feed wildlife in general, even feeding birds can have its ethical dilemmas depending on who you ask.
but feeding deer in USA/canada is not great because many places already have deer overpopulation problems since we exterminated their natural predators. it makes them tame and congregate in suburban areas where they can get hit by cars, spread disease by sharing a feeder and living in close proximity to many other deer, and tame deer have been known to become aggressive and attack humans.
and when there's too many deer or attack incidents they typically get culled, which further emboldens the deer sympathizers to keep feeding and taming them in retaliation. I get to see plenty of deer in my yard without ever having to lure them with food (well, technically our vegetable garden but we rather they didn't lol)
the deer where i live are scary tame, i try to shoo them away and they trot a few yards then stop giving a fuck. which can be very scary when deer are also a rabies vector and tameness is a symptom of it!
also as i mentioned there have been reports of covid in deer, and if you have pets that go outside they should not be in contact with deer droppings if possible, they can get parasites (and some can be fatal). i've been to the yards of deer feeders and there's just poop everywhere. i feel like people really understate the biosecurity risk of excessive deer poo on your property.
anyway i would highly discourage it!
as for feeding deer to your dogs, many dog foods are made with venison and i live somewhere with a lot of deer hunting and venison consumption so i'd say practice the typical meat prep precautions and don't feed it raw.

there's a common criticism of the jurassic world movies that goes like "trying to weaponize raptors is such a stupid idea. the military would never do that". but my main criticism of that particular plot, from a third worldist perspective, would actually be that it doesn't go far enough.
"it's a crazy idea to even suggest--" in the 1950s CIA operatives attempted psychological warfare on a filipino village by spreading rumors that aswang (vampire-esc creatures) were hunting down rebels. they'd kidnap rebels, create dual puncture wounds in the neck, drain the body of blood, and leave the body for the community to find. they've done crazier.
"it's a stupid idea--" so were most of the ways they plotted (or failed) to assassinate fidel castro. exploding shellfish he'd pick up while scuba diving, tuberculosis-causing-fungi in a scuba mask, exploding cigar, ballpoint pen with secret syringe full of poison, just exploding places, etc. like the vast majority of declassified programs would make you look crazy if you told someone about them, despite the evidence of them existing. in the 1960s they put a tiny microphone + radio transmitter in a cat and tried to use it to spy on the soviets. it was called "acoustic kitty".
"animals just aren't efficient--" drug sniffing dogs can have inaccuracy ranges from 1/3-½ of the time. studies have determined that they can pick up on their trainer's racism and target minorities without any illicit substances because the trainer suspects them to have them. there's also a long history of trying to use intelligent animals as spies (crows, ravens, dolphins, pigeons, dogs, etc). most of these aren't actually more efficient than drones in the end, but they still try it just to see if it would work.
"raptors wouldn't be effective against enemy tanks--" most of the people these raptors would be deployed against wouldn't actually have tanks. they'd be guerrilla fighters who rely on hit and run tactics. or if they do have tanks, they'd be relatively old ones from the soviet era without the same modern capabilities. the USA does not wage war (or, proxy war in most cases) with actual military nations. the better question would be how bullet resistant are their scales which has a scene answering it in the first movie (you'll be dead before you manage a hit).
"but raptors are wild animals that might hurt the troops--" the army gave their own troops cancer and denies many healthcare for it to this day. bases would have these things called "burn pits" where you burn all your trash including ones that produce toxic gas like plastic and electronics. toxic gas, as the name implies, can give you anything from asthma to cancer. yes, they knew it did that. yes, they still use them.
the question of "if" training raptors for war is a good idea or smart idea falls flat when we consider that based on historical context, neither of these things are necessarily required for military projects. if someone can think of it, they will try it. the better question to ask is "would the military believe they have something to gain from it?" because that is the only truly relevant one in this situation.
the answer is "yes". it would be a niche that has not been explored. whether or not the raptors specifically work in war would be irrelevant because part of military operation on animals is understanding if an animal is capable of collaboration. take acoustic cat: the mission was ultimately abandoned, but was considered a "win" because they realized the limitations of cats as tools of war. they were deemed incapable of long-term espionage ability due to trainability, but were not completely ruled out for future short term espionage ability, were a niche to arise.
when we apply all of this understanding to the world movies, we get a firmer grasp on why the semantics don't particularly matter as much as the intended message: "just because we can do things doesn't mean we should". which is in line with the themes of jurassic park as a film.

Beast of Busco
Hello, it's Aidyn! I'm here to talk about Beast of Busco.
The Beast of Busco was said to be a large snapping turtle that weighed over 500 pounds. This large animal was first spotted in 1898, living in a seven acre lake near a farm located in Churubusco, Indiana. The farmer who saw it did tell others but decided to drop the matter.
In 1948 two local men went fishing at the lake. While there they claimed to have seen the large turtle. The owner of the land at the time also claimed to have seen it as well. He spent months trying to catch it. He went as far as draining the lake, still no luck.
Before the lake was drained over two hundred people came to see the beast. All two hundred people claimed to have seen the snapper come up and eat a duck in one bite. In honer of the first person seeing the turtle, the best was named Oscar.
Now let's talk about what kind of snapper "Oscar" was. To those who are not from the USA or don't know anything about turtles, there are three kinds of snapping turtles. The common snapping turtle, the suwannee alligator snapping turtle, and the alligator snapping turtle.
There was no he was a common snapper. Theses guys only weigh up to 45 pounds. So way too small. The suwannee snapper only get up to 198.4 pounds, still too small. Then there is the alligator snapper, who can get as big as 220 pounds in captivity. While in the wild, the largest was 249 pounds. Still small but much closer to 500+ pound Oscar.
So there is a high chance that Oscar was an alligator snapping turtle. Now we will talk about if an alligator snapping turtle could get that big. And how do animals get big? By eating! Alligator snapping turtles eat both animals and plants. They eat fish, small birds and anything else they can get a hold of. To keep a big turtle like that alive, you need big prey. Eating ducks isn't going to be enough.
Native fish to Indianian are, catfish, crappies, largemouth bass, muskie, northern pike, sunfish, and walleye. Plenty of these fish get large enough to feed this big turtle. Sadly seven acres is too small for northern pike and muskies. Any other fish can and stay at a healthy population as well.
Now we need to talk about how long they can live. An alligator snapping turtle in the wild can live up to forty-five years in the wild. Though on average it's twenty-three years. So if we subtract 1949 with 1898, we would get 51. That would make Oscar over 51 years old, as he was already an adult when he was first seen. It takes them to eleven to three-teen years to become adults. The largest snapper caught was already six-teen years old.
So could the Beast of Busco exist? There is a chance that he did and moved lakes as most turtles do. Though I don't think he was over five hundred ponds. At lest three hundred pounds at max. After all people like to get a little crazy when they talk about something existing.
This is Aidyn and I'll see you guys on the next hunt!

Wild Boars can be found as early as in The Daunt. They’re located specifically on the eastern side of the map, specifically in the areas around Chainscrape and Plainsong. These medium, docile animals can be hunted, and they drop a variety of resources good for pouch upgrades and trading for meals.
The items in question include multiple kinds of meat, boar hides, boar teeth, pristine teeth, and pristine skulls.
The boar is based almost exactly off of wild boars, which are an invasive species often seen in the southwest USA. Finding this out was easy, as primarily, they are just called wild boar, as well as “wild pig” , “razorback”, or “piney woods rooter”.

Welcome to BIRD FACTS WITH FINCH!
(Great grackles, I need to be more consistent about this.)
Anyway, today's bird is....
The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE!
Tumblr media
Latin name: Lanius ludovicianus
Cladistic placement:
Eukaryota
Animalia
Chordata
Dinosauria
Avialae
Neornithes
Neognathes
Passeriformes
Laniidae
Lanius
L. ludovicianus
Location: North America (USA, Mexico, and a little bit of Canada)
Habitat: Open country, with some trees and shrubs (preferably with spines or thorns). Otherwise, shrikes aren't very picky about exactly what kind of open country they live in.
Tumblr media
Fun facts:
Shrikes may be small (only the size of a robin), but they're fierce. They not only prey on insects, but also lizards, snakes, rodents, and even other birds!
Since a shrike doesn't have sharp talons like a hawk, it has evolved an interesting (if somewhat morbid) behavior: the shrike impales its prey on a thorn or sharp branch to hold it in place for eating. If you find a thorn bush with lots of skewered insects (and perhaps other small animals), you've found a shrike larder.
Shrike larders serve at least two different purposes: as food stores when prey is scarce or high in demand, or as a way for a male shrike to prove his hunting skills to the female.
Just like a blue jay burying acorns, a shrike can remember the exact location of its larders.
Tumblr media
If you look closely at this photo, you'll see that this shrike has a notch in its upper beak, and a pointy bit right behind it. That pointy bit is called a tomial tooth, and the shrike uses it to kill its prey-- immobilizing it with a bite to the neck.
Because of their unusual hunting behavior, shrikes are also called butcher-birds. In fact, their genus name, Lanius, comes from the Latin word for "butcher."

Last but not least, I leave you with two of my favorite shrike-related pieces of media:
Wild Kratts episode: "Mystery on the Prairie"
"November" by Sparkbird

If any of you have more fun shrike facts, leave them in the comments!

If your ocs will go to Luna Nova what will they study?
I'm honestly not too sure how to answer this bc it's such a vague question for someone who has so many OCs lol (/nm). But, I'll try...
If we're going with original OCs, there are a few, like, non-fandom based ones I've been thinking of. They're all from a plot bunny I've had for over a year, about two li'l southern USA kids from the 80s who summon a demon... fun! :D
In the original, Noah Anderson is a wee farmboy, but I'm not sure how that would translate into LWA. There probably is magical agriculture, ig. Maybe like magic cows that give rainbow milk or something lol. He does seem focused on the animals in his work though, so maybe he goes into that in this AU? Working with magical creatures and whatnot? Magical vetinary?
Ruth Lambson seems like the kinda girl who'd research deities or astrology (and totally is not secretly doing black magic and demonology what are you talking about lol—)
Isiah Woodlock is the class clown and entertainer of his high school as is. I can see him going down the road of Chariot and Akko and going into magic shows.
For Mark Halls, I was trying to figure out how him being into sports (AKA good ol' murican football) would translate, and then I remembered the wild hunt exists so... Yeah. That.
And finally, my girl Mary-Anne Briar might go into magical textiles/fashion or something like that. Magically enhanced clothing. There is no in-universe translation for it as a hobby, so that's what we're going with!

almost just hit a cat that sprinted out of its yard full speed to cross the st fucking dumbass... also seen a pretty surprising amount of dead cats on the road in th last few yrs.. soo ive said it once ill say it again: keeps ur fucking cats inside!!! for real theres so many reasons... obviously its bad for cats health from cars, coyotes, other cats that have diseases, wild animals they eat that have diseases, needlessly breeding when we hav a srs overpopulation issue... but also countless wildlife organizations have pleaded for ppl to keep em inside bc they do an INSANE amount of damage to ur local wildlife population. thers lots of studies u can find now but domestic cats just in the USA kill 1.5- 4 BILLION birds a year... small furry animals and reptiles and amphibians also but idk that number. but that is FUCKED. cats are also credited to like 10 extinctions for the same reason. they arent wild animals. they dont preserve energy and hunt when they need, they eat at home and then go ham on the wildlife they arent even a part of for fun. so sad.... oh also its disgusting that ppls outdoors cats just shit where they want and spend toxoplasmosis. okay anyway!!! just bc ur cat likes it doesnt mean its the right choice. my pets wud be happier doing a LOT of things i dont let them do... lol... thats why wer the guardians and theyr the pets.

you know what bothers me most about jurassic world ?
the fact that the whole movie takes place over maybe one day.
like, you expect me to believe the mosasaurs-which were fed multiple times per day large quantities of shark meat-was just suddenly hungry enough to start eating literally anything? pterosaurs and people and then going to so far as to jump out of its pool to grab the indom rex???
The mosa was so overfed, that thing wouldn't have even felt hungry for days. And we see that Gray & Zach sat and saw a feeding before the park was evacuated. So, there's no way that thing was hungry enough. It was so used to being fed, that it wouldn't have gone out of it's way to hunt for at least two days. It was a wild animal, but it still had a feeding schedule, that it was used to. It did tricks. That thing was partially domesticated, it was used to loud noisy humans, like lions in a zoo. It wasn't gonna do shit that fast. Fuck off, movie.
which like, as an aside, is anyone else concerned for that thing's health? Someone did all the math already for how much fish they're feeding the great whites, and like--holy shit this park is expensive. but ignoring that, let's talk about big fishy things. Killer whales need to eat about 150 to 300 pounds of food per day. they weigh about 6,600 – 8,800 lbs. So, every day, they eat roughly 2.28%-3.4% of their weight. A mosasaurs weighed about 15 tons, so roughly they would need somewhere around 600 to 1,020 lbs every day. (Very very rough math here). (Note: Great whites eat . 5 to 3 percent of their body weight every day.) Great whites weigh about 1,500 – 2,400 lbs. They feed a whole great white shark to the mosasaurs?? WHICH, according to the Jurassic website, is EVERY TWO HOURS. HOW MUCH FOOD ARE THEY GIVING THIS THING??? HOW OVERWIGHT IS THE MOSA?? IS THE MOSA OKAY???? No, listen, listen--We don't know the park's operating hours. Basing this mostly on the USA but I assume it'll be similar from my quick look at disney worldwide. But most Zoos run on average from 9am - 4/5pm. Most amusement parks are 10:30 am - 8/9 pm. Disney, the most comparatively similar thing, runs from 9 am - 9pm. We can assume, Jurassic World runs from roughly 9 am, until sometime in the evening between 4-10pm. So, every two hours. Assuming they start on whole hours, not half, the earliest show time would be 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm. (6 possible feeding times). If we assume, they start on half hours instead: 9:30 am. 11:30 am. 1:30 pm. 3:30 pm. 5:30 pm. 7:30 pm. 8:30 pm. (7 possible feeding times). 4-7 times a day they hold the mosa feeding time. Jurassic World is feeding Mosa somewhere between 6,000-9,600 lbs on the 4-feeding schedule. 10,500-16,800 lbs on the 7-feeding schedule. Which, if they require somewhere under 5% of their body weight per day like an orca, or upwards to 12% like a blue whale? (Which, for the record, is only 3600 lbs of a mosa). This thing is grossly overfed. It's getting fed around 20% to 56% of its body weight. There is no way in HELL I believe that the mosa would be willing to do EXTRA work to get food when it is literally so overweight, so overfed, that thing has not gone more than an hour without food in its entire life. Do NOT tell me that it's believable the mosa would go out of its way to eat the pterosaur or the indom.

sorry but as much as i usually vibe with "british people bad" posts i do fuckin hate that post where some random uk uni student is like "wow it's wild that they have dangerous animals in the USA, we don't anymore" and people go on for paragraphs tearing them to absolute shreds over the destruction of british ecosystems centuries ago in some kind of bizarrely hostile gotcha as though by neutrally stating "the major predators here were hunted to extinction" the original tagger must have naturally been clapping and cheering with glee about that fact, or that they personally went wolf hunting in 1137 and stripped the scottish countryside of its rich forests with their bare hands

I can't remember if you've mentioned this but does Marcel like eating raw meat?
I haven't mentioned it. He does eat lots of raw meat/fish! It's good for vitamin c! This is partly a beastkin thing and partly a cultural thing.
His favorite food to consume raw is fish. He'll often eat it immediately after fishing, like a fox. He'll go for the liver first after hunting deer. He doesn't stop to cook it, he rips into it like a kid on Christmas.
He likes Greenlandic cuisine. It's his favorite. His mother was always especially nostalgic for it, but his American father didn't really understand the importance. She would occasionally prepare dishes with raw or cold smoked meats, and was particularly fond of dried meats. Her husband was more interested in running through the woods half naked and eating a whole raw chicken. She wanted a place off-grid to get in touch with her fox spirit and understand her purpose. A place without the distractions of modern tech where she could focus on the spiritual aspect and discover her purpose. He wanted to be a wild animal. In hindsight he might have been a little crazy.
The Greendlanic influence in Marcel is rather minimal. He was born in Alaska, and his father never permanently lived outside the USA. His father met his wife visiting Kitaa as a tourist and they were both the first beastkin either had ever met. His mother feels very strongly about handing down cultural elements after the Danish attempts at erasing Greenlandic culture completely in the 1950s. She is actually of mixed heritage herself, but lived most of her life in Kitaa. She's still very proud of the Greenlandic part of herself.

Hog Hunting in Central Texas - Let the Adventure Begin
Hog hunting is considered an underutilized activity in Texas. There are so many ranches that provide the services of hog hunting, but you have to choose the best one. Texas Hunt Rach has provided the word class services of Hog hunting since 2002. It offers top-notch - hog-hunting adventure services to make the hunting lover's experiences memorable and fun. This considers and provides the best native and exotic animals like Hogs, Elk, Axis Deer, Red Stag, Black Buck, Ibex, Sika Deer, Fallow Buck, white deer, and more. In this article, we dive deep into hog hunting in central Texas.
Tumblr media
Why You Consider Hog Hunting In Central Texas?
Wild hogs are invasive, causing financial damage to farmers. They also create an uncontrollable environment for thriving and can transmit diseases to domestic pig populations.
Wild hogs threaten nature; they prefer to eat turkey and quail eggs, turkey poults, and newborn deer. They are extremely intelligent, approximately only at night, and can smell a hunter from a mile away. These wild hogs are popular among society as a game animal that advocates for liberal hunting seasons and regulations. Feral bacon is also one of the finest game meats available, and the ability to hunt year-long combined with the prospects of a good old-fashioned pig roast should incite a craving from all who enjoy the outdoors. This is the great South Texas hunting
Where You Do Hog Hunting in Central Texas
Unlike the greater part of the country that stands by to fill its destiny with people, Texas and Florida have the advantage of geography. Texas alone accounts for an estimated number more than any state, with Florida signified in second place. From the state hunter’s point of view, the whole of the state of Florida does not come under consideration because 160 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) occupy nearly 6 million acres of public land.
Private property gives hunters the privilege of the top pick of spots, even if it requires additional budget. Although there are isolated cases of exceptions, wild hog hunting in public land is limited to another season where hunting other wild animals is also permitted. Most states have created laws allowing hunters to hunt private lands year-round and at night with the landowner's written permission. Certain states don't even provide for one to have a license while hog hunting. Ask the private landowners around countywide wildlife areas if any issues are carried over. Especially they express that they want to solve the issue so does the counselor.
The USA’s other best states for bagging a boar are Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Only conduct fishing in the areas permitted by your state’s regulations. You may also consider the bow-hunting ranches in Texas.
For more information, You can visit Texas Hunt Ranch's official website.
