American Alligator in Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia, USA
James Morden
Mass: 500 lbs (Male, Adult), 200 lbs (Female, Adult)
Scientific name: Alligator mississippiensis
Conservation status: Least Concern
Lifespan: 30 – 50 years in the wild, 80 years under human care.
Bite strength: about 2125 PSI
Class: Reptilia
Domain: Eukaryota
Diet: Fish, snails and other invertebrates, birds, frogs and mammals that come to the water's edge.
Threats: Small alligators are eaten by a variety of predators including raccoons, otters, wading birds, and fish. Larger alligators are threatened by cannibalism, intraspecific fighting, and hunting by humans.
Habitat: Freshwater, slow-moving rivers. They also live in swamps, marshes and lakes. They can only tolerate salt water for brief periods because they do not have salt glands.
Range: Native to Southeastern United States, Northeast Mexico, and China. They can be found in the Southeast coasts of the US and South America.
Why are they important?
Gator holes - They create holes that provide habitats for fish, birds, insects, snakes, turtles, and other wildlife.
Apex Predators - Alligators over four feet long are considered the top of the food chain. Apex predators help keep other animal populations in balance.

Ranking up there with the top largest snakes in the United States is this wonderful black rat snake. He was resting in the top of a trashcan of yard waste that was overstuffed and could not close. It's first reaction upon seeing me was to try to dart down deeper into the garbage can. Upon grabbing it by the tail and pulling it out it never tried to strike and instead did everything he could to move its body and head as far away from the hand holding it as possible. And remember nonvenomous snakes in Georgia are protected by law. Never kill a non-venomous snake. There are plenty of businesses they can remove them as well as reptile enthusiast such as myself. #blackratsnake #snakes #snake #black #rat#reptile #gawildlife #wildlife #protectsnakes (at Eagle's Landing Country Club)

Outside grilling burgers when out of the corner of my eye I see the holy Grail of local snakes. The eastern king snake/chain snake. Picked it right up and handled it for a long while and it never tried to bite. I've been on the hunt for one of these for two years and lo and behold it comes to me. #kingsnake #snake #snakes #beautiful #calm #reptile #gawildlife (at Henry County, Georgia)
