zac’s “less is more” approach to comedy is always golden but it is working PERFECTLY for colin provolone from both a comedic and dramatic standpoint. everyone else I kinda get the vibe of but colin is Just Some Guy which is driving both me and raphaniel up the fucking WALL.

Tarot Assignment: Meryl Stryfe
Tumblr media
She's so cool. Look at that dramatic action pose. Here's best girl Meryl.
Ace of Swords: This card indicates that one is about to experience the world from a new point of view, and is a seeker of truth that cuts through deception. Importantly, it emphasizes the idea of viewing the world as a place filled with possibilities. Out of all of the people Vash becomes close with, Meryl is the closest to embodying similar ideals to his, and that includes the capacity to believe that humanity and the world can choose to move forward. Meryl is also a journalist in Stampede, which suits the truth aspect of this card well, but even in 98 and the manga, she is driven to uncovering the true identity of Vash, and she openly questions even the antagonists in the interest of finding out information - a trait that unfortunately earns her exactly what she asked for in the worst of ways in the manga. Most importantly though, Meryl reevaluates her views on the world and what she knows throughout the story, never losing her drive or her compassion.
Strength: This card was really a no-brainer. The card of fortitude, compassion, and fearlessness even when under immense duress and danger, I can think of no other major arcana that better suits Meryl and her story. Meryl's resilience becomes strength not only for herself, but also for Vash to feel inspired by and hopeful - Meryl winds up representing, in a way, the capacity for humanity to accept, work hard, and change. Meryl is also a source of stability for the characters - Milly, as her mentor, and Vash, as his friend and support. It speaks too of self-mastery and confidence, something Meryl is shown to value, especially in her career.
Seven of Pentacles: The card of investment and effort, as in, someone who puts in a lot of time and effort towards their goals and what they ultimately want to achieve. They may feel frustration when there are delays or when faced with failure. I don't think this one requires much explaining - Meryl is driven and work-focused, even to the point of detriment sometimes early in the series. However, this card also indicates a willingness to put in an investment for the long-term, despite the fear that things might not work out - which to me reminds me of her acceptance of Vash's philosophy and her putting in so much effort to help make this better future a reality.

I just watched Blue Beetle and as much as I enjoyed it, I can’t say I’m not also a little disappointed.
Like it had all these fantastic elements! It had wonderful dynamic characters, and a very well established sympathetic secondary antagonist cast against a completely detestable primary antagonist, and a fun aesthetic, and cool technology, and great humor—I mean I watched it with my dad and brother and there wasn’t a single joke that didn’t make at least one of us laugh.
But it felt like all these stupendous pieces had been stuck together with duct tape and chewing gum instead of being stitched together properly and fully integrated with each other to create a cohesive story.
(spoilers under the cut)
I never advocate for movies to be longer because I’m not great at sitting still—but this is one movie that really could have used an extra ten minutes or so, just to slow down for proper scene transitions and to let people actually process the story aspects rather than just the characters.
I don’t want to knock its emphasis on family either, because it was not a bad thing by any means (I loved the family dynamic and it felt very organic and realistic), but it was sometimes redundant to the detriment of other necessary elements of the story.
Like the scarab, you know, the catalyst for the entire film?
It got treated as an object even after they learned it was sentient, and then largely ignored unless it needed to say or do something to progress the plot. They said it was sentient and then didn’t give it a personality. Even Jarvis had a personality in the Iron Man movies and he was just a computer program, not a sentient AI.
The only time I felt like the scarab was being treated as an actual character as it should have been instead of as an accessory was when Jaime’s mom pulled him aside and addressed it specifically when she gave them both her motherly pep talk, and then the callback to that pep talk during the subsequent fight scene, and I absolutely adored that moment, I just wish it wasn’t the only one.
They told us repeatedly that Jaime and Khaji Da were integrated and their respective minds were connected, but they didn’t really show that. They didn’t really address it at all outside of the way they fight together. Like these two characters are literally irreversibly fused together but somehow they never got an actual relationship dynamic.
Khaji Da immediately agrees when Jaime makes his no killing rule clear, despite obviously disagreeing before that point. It responds instantly when he asks for specific weapons. In fact, after the initial booting-up sequence, when it dragged Jaime around without consideration, it almost never disagrees with Jaime or exerts its own will at all, despite it being supposedly sentient.
It doesn’t even get a proper introduction. Jaime just starts calling it by name unprompted and that gets completely glossed over. They don’t even use it to further establish how their mental connection works.
The plot just skips over the inconveniences of a symbiotic relationship to jump into the action.
Also, any information we get about Kord or Khaji Da is rushed and simplified and then immediately gets tread on by the character development scenes. And I’m a sucker for good character development, which this movie has a lot of and which I loved, but you can’t throw necessary exposition and worldbuilding under the bus for it. A good movie and a good story needs both, and this one just wasn’t quite balanced right.
All in all, I definitely liked it, but I’m frustrated but the potential that was so agonizingly visible but that it didn’t quite live up to.

I love how when it came to the way of rewriting most characters, we either keep most of their personalities and traits the same or just hit the restart button and make them COMPLETELY different than what they were in the show.
Like take Pac for example, in the show he's an absolute goof, he's willing to do his job to prevent a full strike of chaos, and he's pretty optimistic and positive towards the people he cares about. Yet he still can get aggressive very fast and has some angry outbursts a lot.
But from what I've seen of the way the fandom writes him most of the time, it's either his outbursts are more controlled, he's more anxious and nervous than anything, and he's way more wholesome and emotional. Or.... He's the cause of the chaos.
Personally it's just something I've seen not only in a few of your works, but others too. It's either we keep them the way they are, make a few tweaks, or just throw canon out the window and throw them into a vat of fanon behavior. :')
Yup!! Show's our playground now, we can do with canon whatever we want xD
I do like taking creative liberties, but I'll admit that I often prefer to stay true to the source material in terms of its charm or certain canon aspects. Or at least at this stage of the game... (I'm often playing around with new fanfic ideas for whenever CMC or TV is finished, and some of them do kinda throw canon out the window lol)
Generally, I like to keep the characters close to how they are in canon, but add a few bonuses. Kinda like levelling them up, y'know? With Pac, I do really like how he already is in canon, and instead of adding more personality traits to him, I'd rather deepen or accentuate his existing traits. Like...
Canon Pac is afraid of losing his aunt? Cool, let's make it so that his fear is so deep that he sometimes has nightmares over it. Which contributes to his overall nervousness in some instances. Why does he tend to get nervous? Cuz of a troubled childhood when he was too concerned with pleasing his peers in order to fit in, which may or may not have led to a lot of anxiousness in his childhood, which may or may not have developed into panic attacks. Make this an additional aspect of his personality and inner demons, and couple it with his canon self. What do we get? An absolute goof who's noble and good at doing his job and who's optimistic and positive towards the people he cares about, BUT underneath that hard-working, kind exterior is a little boy who still struggles with anxiety and a lot of self-doubt/inferiority, and he hides it well because he doesn't want to be a burden to others (stemming from his people-pleasing childhood AND from his new responsibilities as Pacworld's protector), and so he'll do everything in his power to do good, but often to the detriment of his own mental health...which or may not see a return of his panic attacks.
Boom. You've got canon Pac with an extra sprinkle of trauma.
And if you think Pac has it hard, wait until you see what I've got cooking up for Cyli, Spiral, and Elli.

Have to be honest, at first my reaction to your waipa posts was a mixture of laughter and pain. But the more i really look at these moments you've brilliantly highlighted, the more i'm starting to see the true energy that was blossoming there—it really is one of the most moving dynamics in bad buddy now that i think of it. Not to mention how it perfectly parallels pat and pran's own story of forbidden love?? (with pa being pat's sister and wai his enemy). You've absorbed me into the ship and i think it's fast becoming an otp <333
@airenyah we got another one!!
Yeah I think we were all so focused on Pat and Pran for the last two years at the detriment to the other characters of the show, and especially at the expense of Wai and Pa's relationship. And like I wrote here, I just think waipa was so brilliantly constructed to explore the themes of the show it's a real disservice to overlook it. I mean, how cool is it to have a romantic relationship be such a vessel for themes about intergenerational trauma etc! waipa were really so groundbreaking.
I think people tended to overlook waipa because they didn't end up together by the end of the show, which I get but also just because they didn't end up together on the show doesn't mean the love wasn't strong and valuable (and also I think choosing to end the show with them apart just speaks to Aof's commitment to the themes of his work - in real life sometimes things don't end up happily). I know it's disappointing but it's just so much richer narratively (and gives us some delightful angst!)
People thought we weren't serious about our love for waipa (for some reason??) but I'm glad so many people have been reaching out and saying they've found new affection for the ship! that's all I can really hope for <3

Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, Nathalie Sancoeur —Aesthetic
Tumblr media
Nathalie Sancoeur's Character & Personality
Nathalie is a serious and formal woman who works diligently. She has a cold and distant demeanor as she doesn't openly express her emotions to others most of the time. Nathalie's will is strong, remaining unfazed even when people of greater authority yell at her. She can reason with the Agreste's whenever they're acting inconsiderately or emotionally as an objective, sensible and understanding person. While not warm, Nathalie can be cordial and polite. When it comes to her boss, she's loyal to him and becomes nervous about disappointing him. Yet, Nathalie can rebel against him occasionally if it means putting his son's happiness first. Although she doesn't usually show it, she desires what's best for the Agreste family and often hopes her boss will spend more time with his son. However, Nathalie's concern is limited to the Agreste's as she doesn't care about the other Parisians' well-being. Even though she has a cool and calm demeanor, she can sometimes lose her temper. Thus, Nathalie will disregard any detrimental consequences when supporting her boss. In which, she doesn't think things through. Despite this, Nathalie admits the job is sometimes too much. Regardless of initially being extremely loyal to her boss, she isn't above to perceive the madness forming in his mind. Eventually, Nathalie understands his madness and refuses to help him any longer. Fortunately, she'll still work for him as his secretary and live at the mansion to keep his son safe.

In a way One Piece Live Action is a bit of an exercise in frustration.
On one hand the actors, costume designers, special effect specialists and set designers seem to have sold their souls to be as accurate and as good as possible. My god there were amazing moments and little details that they got just right.
On the other hand, the writing is flip-floppy, sometimes it nails it, even when it's not faithful, and at other times it's just not working. Usopp's integration arc was mangled and Sanji's was pretty much skipped over. Which is infuriating because Usopp's was easily fixed and Sanji deciding to join them seems kind of random and more about Nami than because Luffy won him over.
Thinking it over, I think I've pinpointed what's not working and could have been removed, incidently fixing Usopp's arc and giving us time for Sanji's. Garp should have never entered the story beyond the intro and Koby should have exited after he and Luffy said their first goodbyes. Maybe show us a scene of him enlisting with Helmeppo for closure. They take up so much time that wasn't theirs to take, to the point where it feels like Koby is the second protagonist instead of a side character. To the detriment of the Strawhats. If they weren't taking up the run time, then Don Krieg could have been the antagonist that showed Sanji's character to the crew and audience and showed Luffy's character to Sanji and Zeff. Had Koby not been having this arc about being more decisive and trusting his gut, then Usopp could have had his arc about deciding that it didn't matter that nobody believed him, because he would fight even if it cost him. That and he should have gone for Kuro instead of Kaya. Buggy also didn't need to be in the story after he was defeated, except for the epilogue because that was a cool nod.
Overall it was good and I'm debating rewatching the whole anime from the beginning because of the nostalgia it gave me, but I am hoping that season 2, which looks likely, avoids this issue in the future.

despite everything, the thing that gets me the most about c!technoblade is that it would've been so easy for him to tell the story he wanted to tell if he'd just made dream his rival.
- his entry to the server was immediately off of the heels of his mr beast duel with dream, so an extended rivalry would've Easily road on and Amplified the hype from that. and it also just would’ve been cool to see it integrated as backstory for them.
- on a very real level dream is one of the only people on the server that poses a significant Physical threat to techno in a fight. techno’s character is very much so centered around explosive drama stemming from Physical conflict powered by Emotional conflict. it’s a Cycle Of building up to a big fight and then having that fight be the deciding factor for everything that came before and everything that’ll come after. which can be Very entertaining and enjoyable, but it has to Maintain Tension throughout the series.
from a pure Interest level it’s more Tense when you don’t know what the outcome will be. techno Already had a reputation for being unbeatable going in, and that’s only been Reinforced throughout the series as nobody’s been able to actually Win against him. doomsday especially completely drained any potential tension from any fight techno ever gets into on the server. no other character wants to stand up to him Except quackity, who’s a terrible fighter which means that tension Cannot be maintained through a straight up Fight.
sometimes techno will be stripped of tools to make the fight more Impressive when he wins, but he Will always win.
this is exactly why I’d guess the last couple of story beats with his character actually Have involved scripting in an attempt to resurrect that tension from the grave. however he didn’t actually lose those fights, and the canonizing of him having one life this late into the game more or less guarantees that he never will (unless the intended ending for his character Is for him to die for good).
- fundamentally technoblade’s character is centered around Chaos and decentralization of power. and on the surface dream looks like he’s the same, but he’s Actually the strongest opposition to techno’s beliefs there is. dream views himself as not only owning all of the land in the smp, but all of the People in it too. he commissioned a massive inescapable prison that he now has Sole control over. he was fully willing to test the revival book on phil (which is to say torture and kill him). he Fully wants control and ownership over the entire server, Including techno. dream Legitimately manipulated techno and used him as a weapon In Canon from the second he joined the server [Link]
dream is The Reason that other factions and countries Exist, because they were created to try to balance out His bid for absolute power and control. doomsday didn’t work in stopping people from creating factions because it made people feel More vulnerable instead of less. but if techno had realized that dream was the real source of the power imbalance on the server then it could’ve been handled in a Different way that made people feel more secure and Safe without countries and laws to try to guarantee that safety and freedom.
having techno Realize that dream intentionally stripped him of his allies by manipulating them into having conflict with each other, having techno Realize that dream isn’t an anarchist at all, having techno Realize that dream legitimately sees him as an Object to bludgeon people with until he breaks and gets discarded would’ve fueled So Much righteous anger and drama and it would’ve Slapped So Hard.
the plot beat of techno being an underdog overthrowing a corrupt dictator who tricked him into helping fund their political goals to techno’s own detriment is one that aligns Perfectly with techno’s relationship with dream, which is made all the more interesting by the fact that we legitimately do not know which one out of the two of them would win in a one on one fight.
- we could’ve had the mr beast duel except dream is also doing a villain monologue at the same time. Never Forget What They Took From You

I had someone rant to me about their dnd game and it was fine n all and I had fun overall but I was biting my tongue because they were recounting how their group got mad at them out of character for almost causing a tpk due to their bad decision making which they purposely did because it was “in character” to do so.
Like I’m conflicted because yes this can cause some cool angst and what not and having them go off and tell me their characters entire backstory non stop for fifteen minutes put it in context of the story but the very fact that the group got upset means there has been miscommunication and this person may be unintentionally prioritizing their own character over the groups fun.
I believe the entire group’s fun is the first priority and thus if your edgy character’s lashing out doesn’t involve the rest of the group in an interesting manner, then something may have gone awry.
I’ve had a similar experience (my DM follows this blog if you read this hi dm ily you handled the situation perfectly in my opinion) where an individual had a cool edgy character with trauma and angst which led them to do follow poor tactical decisions and it over all just was not the best at prioritizing the entire group’s fun.
Both situations are like when characters trying to be played as the cool lone wolf just doesn’t work. Like the lone wolf can work but you can’t have a character that hates the entire party. I had that issue with a character before. I made a character that was a firm city dweller and then all of a sudden the group decided to leave the city and head into the middle of the wilderness after just meeting and I had a hard time finding reasons as to why my character would stay with them because realistically in character they would not have stayed. But that comes second to the group’s fun. So I figured it and out found a reason. (Though I do sorta regret putting all my character’s plot hooks in the city cause the moment we left the city it was just like whoops my character has immediately faded into the background).
Edgy characters can be fun for the entire group, but if your character is going to have a violent lashing out due to angst or trauma, there should be open communication with the group before hand in my opinion. Currently we’re playing with a character who has a cursed sword that is causing the character to become violent. But it’s so fun for the entire group! It’s like a bunch of dummies trying to figure out ways to fix the curse and failing miserably as the curse gets worse and a sense of dread sets in.
My character has been able to find out more about the curse, another has been snooping around and is curious about the curse to the point of causing in game annoyance between characters. All the characters are invested and involved in the curse one way or another, it’s not a storyline that is for a single player, we are all effected my the curse because we don’t want our friend to kill is in our sleep but we also all make fun of the character for being cursed.
Tl;dr I think that being in character in a way that’s both fun/not detrimental to fun (cause like sometimes you gotta deal with a little boring just cause it makes sense sometimes) is more important than your cool edgy character having an angst moment. Cause at a certain point, just write fanfiction babes. And you can still have your cool edgy moments, just make sure either the table knows about it and better yet involve them in it. Don’t get them killed unless it would be fun for both people to do so.

💫🌲!
I forgor I still had asks I'm so sorry
💫What is your favourite fact about this character and why?
So now that I've posted more about him hopefully this fun fact won't be too confusing haha, but technically if/when Doe realizes he's words he could theoretically transfer himself into a different body than the suit. This is due entirely to the way he exists now, as the words went through a lot of different vessels before finding one that worked right (the suit). Think of it like a snail trying to find a good shell and going through a bunch of different ones before finding one they fit in.
Like the fun part about this is that technically yes we could go the boring way of Doe possessing a corpse or something humanoid but blegh. Thats the cowards way out. Disgusting! Get it outta here!
I like to think of Doe posessing random shit. A velocipede? Hell yeah gotta go fast. Can a coffee cup taste? Let's test that shit out boys. Sword? Fuck yeah swords are cool.
You get the idea. Limit is relative size and cohesiveness. Like water or a building or blades of grass wouldn't work (maybe an apartment). But a tree (which is complicated but it's close to human so it's easier to translate for him) or a handful of rocks would be perfect.
Likewise while he could technically possess something already sentient, that would cause brain death (sort of, it's complicated) in whatever it is the words take control of but a) thematically I find the words doing that boring (personally) and b) Doe would never do that because he doesn't want to kill something else just to make things easier for himself (unless they're human. He doesn't care too much about that tbh.)
But none of that matters anyway until I get to the point in his story where he finds out.
If I ever decide to do so. Haven't decided yet.
🌲 How deeply does your OC feel? Are they typically empathetic or do they have a hard time connecting with others in this way? What are they like when offering support and comfort to someone they care for?
Doe feels very deeply, to the point of potentially his own detriment sometimes, but not necessarily on behalf of other people. He's not exactly empathetic, but he does feel....pity for others? He often feels bad or sorry for their plights which is why he tries to help when he can, but it's not exactly connection he feels. More a sense of injustice (or because he likes seeing people happy). He can *sort of* be empathetic to certain people if he's around them long enough (friends, Darcy, animals (which are easier for him to understand anyway)), but there's a disconnect there when it comes to how he feels things in the first place.
I'm not sure I'm making much sense with this, apologies.
It really just comes down to...I think the easiest analogy to make with Doe would be like a robot. Only programmed with the words he's made of, and being able to learn more, only emotions are a bit harder as they're more abstract. It's always easier to feel and understand yourself, but people are a bit of a mystery aren't they?

If I may ask since you've given insight on the other characters recently, what is Badtimewithscar like/do? Also pretty sure the skin change is just him turning into Mumbo which is pretty funny. :P
YEAH OF COURSE!! :D LMAO... the mumbofication of Badtimes...
The thing with Badtimes is that there’s so little canon content of him that a lot of his characterisation is just me extrapolating stuff and trying to round out the group.
He’s sort of an enigma, and I decided to keep that in-universe- he’s usually working with Scar and so the other hermitclones don’t really see him all that often. He has a room in NPG’s ‘safe house’ (they’re all flatting together LOL) but it’s quite bare.
He was created by the vex, and is bound by contract to be Scar’s assistant. This usually means camerawork, but sometimes it’s dirty work. He hates it all the same, and tries to slack off as much as possible.
ik he's been mumbofied but I love vex Badtimes too much, especially now that he could easily be compared to a very stubborn, disgruntled allay
He’s quiet and generally quite passive, often opting to take the path of least resistance. He doesn’t have any grand plans of world domination. He doesn’t necessarily want to see the world burn, but he probably wouldn’t do much to stop it from happening. He just wants a nap, really.
Tends to obey the letter of the law but never the spirit
Chronologically he’s the youngest hermitclone, but he’s largely seen as the old man of the bunch because mentally he’s in his mid-late 30s and has depressed vibes
(for reference: Hels is also an adult but a tad more immature, Evil X and Worm Man are a lot younger, NPG has been around for so long that it doesnt really matter anymore)
He doesn’t help out with chores and takes obnoxiously long showers. By all accounts he should be considered to be a terrible flatmate, but the others respect him too much because he’s a good listener. Evil X especially thinks of him as an older brother/cool uncle figure.
NPG hates him, but not enough to kick him out, and certainly not as much as he hates Hels.
He knows the Truth, to an extent. He’s aware of the Unseen Audience and actively works as a conduit for it, but he chooses not to think too much about the world beyond and how big the system really is. He doesn’t ask any questions, not because he isn’t curious, but because he knows that it’ll only be to his detriment.

#02 - Street Fighter III - 3rd Strike
Throughout the 90s Capcom was pumpin' out Street Fighter games up the wazoo. This includes two that sort of/kind of co-existed by the time they reached their peaks. Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter III, polar opposites in concepts and gameplay. Street Fighter Alpha focuses on the titular Street Fighters before SF2. Street Fighter III focuses on the Street Fighters way after SF2 (and SF4+5). I'll be talking III in specific as that game's my JAM.
Tumblr media
3rd Strike - A few years after the first two Alphas came out, Capcom began work on a new franchise called New Generation. However, out of low faith and with the introduction of artist Akiman to the team, it became a Street Fighter title, although one with only two returning characters. 2nd Impact was a little better, it added Akuma and introduced Hugo from the Final Fight series. Then Third Strike came and added Chun-Li. Despite the arguably lackluster SF2 representation I feel like the new characters give the SFIII series more of its identity, not that SFIII lacks identity to begin with. With the series and its updates coming out from 1997-1999 and it focusing on the future and a new generation of fighters it has more of a hip and cool and awesome direction, compounding this is the music featured in 3rd Strike, which is a co-effort between Capcom composer Hideki Okugawa and underground rapper Infinite, the music best being described as a sweet mix of jazz, hip hop and some breakcore adjacent genres like house
Another beloved part of SFIII is its spritework and graphics. It runs on the CPS System III board, allowing for fluid graphics and in the case of the first release, elaborate backgrounds. In an era where 3D games were thriving and 2D games were dying, Capcom stuck to their guns, which was to their detriment...at the time. One of the best examples of this fluid spritework is Elena's idle. It's so fuckin' smooth it hurts WHY DID THEY POP OFF ON THAT IDL
Tumblr media
The game started catching on some years later thanks to its technically deep and interesting gameplay. Capcom removed some features present in the Alpha series and replaced/tweaked others. No more air blocking, ya got PARRYING BAYBEEE. Press toward or down really fast and you do a fast ass parry that you can react out of immediately. Supers were tweaked into the Super Art system. Instead of having multiple super moves with strength depending on what button you use, you pick one Super Art when you're picking out your character. Sometimes it's a Denjin Hadoken kind of day. Other additions include quick dashes from Darkstalkers that allow you to just do a large steppy in the left or right direction and EX moves, a feature taken from Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game on the original PlayStation. (Important thing of note is that Akuma doesn't have EX moves but can use multiple super moves even though he only picks one at the character select screen.)
These tweaks paired with the game's slower speed compared to Alpha makes the game feel a lot more strategy based. The fluidity of the animations add a certain heaviness to all the attacks even if the attacks aren't that high in startup or ending lag. But it doesn't feel wrong, it feels JUST right and I think it perfectly compliments things like punishes or counters. It makes hitting that Shin Shoryuken all the more powerful, you feel me?
Tumblr media
One of the most powerful SFIII clips that has circulated around the FGC (Fighting Game Community) for over a decade is EVO Moment 37, better known as the Daigo Parry. Obviously, it happened at EVO 2004, EVO standing for Evolution. The date was August 1st, 2004, Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong were in the semifinals. Justin Wong was playing as Chun-Li and Daigo was playing as Ken, and Justin had Daigo on death's door. Justin figured "this fuck's gonna go down from my supah move even if he blocks!!!" and so he did his supah move. But Daigo just upped and decided to parry the entire thing and counter with a super move. He had to parry FIFTEEN TIMES!!!! If that didn't sell you on how ballsy that was, parrying pretty much requires frame perfect inputs, so there was little-to-no room for error, and no error there was!!!
Tumblr media
So what do I have to say about the game that hasn't already been said here? Play it. You can emulate it obviously but the quickest way to hop in and fight against someone online is with Fightcade; It's also been released on home consoles like the Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection . It is in my honest opinion the pinnacle of 90s fighting games and sprite-based fighting games in general.

What would you consider to be one of the most challenging aspects when it comes to writing your muse?
Tumblr media
unprompted asks 【always accepting】
Tumblr media Tumblr media
//Hi anon! Ahh, that's a really good question! I'm sure this is gonna get long, so I hope that's okay. Also, there will be some salt over some stuff in regards to fanon takes, so... ah, small warning for that as well ;;;
One of the most challenging aspects I can think of right off the bat would be the fleshing out of the different sides there are to Speedwagon, most of which tend to go waaaaay overlooked and even get ignored by a big chunk of the fandom, sometimes in favor of largely detrimental fanon takes that have absolutely nothing to do with his actual canon personality, which is cool as a headcanon, I guess?? but not when that narrative is forced and even pushed as canon and, thus, resulting in people completely misunderstanding and misinterpreting the character to the point where a lot of the things he does as well as his actual impact and the key role he has from the start in the story get completely written off and ignored as if he was just some "filler character" or something.
The challenge, for me, in regards to all that when it comes to writing Speedwagon is probably giving all those "lesser known" sides of his as much spotlight as possible, but without overdoing it and overshadowing those other more known sides of his canon (not the fanon ones, cause I honest to god despise most of the fanon takes on him) and that most people are familiar with, and try to make the character be known for who he truly is, with all his traits and his many flaws, instead of that "perfect uwu boi" image that a lot of people have of him.
I've said this from the start too, but I've always aimed and tried to write Speedwagon as close to the canon as I possibly can as well (minus the occasional crack and ooc stuff that normally goes on in a rp blog, but even then, I try to inject as much of his canon personality into those), so all this stuff I've mentioned is pretty important for me to keep in mind for my writing of him since, as stated before, it's always been my intention to have people see Speedwagon for who he truly is, and not through the "fanon lenses" that more often than not have a completely different, usually distorted, image of him.
The other challenges I still find writing him would be more "technical" ones, as I also favor historical accuracy in my writing, so there will be times when I'll be doing a shit ton of research on stuff from the Victorian era and/or the early-to-mid 1900s in America, sometimes even for the most mundane things too, lol. Same when it comes to gay life and culture of the time, gangster/crime life and slang, and so on. And this also extends to more "modern" verses.
I'm also not a native English speaker, so another challenge for me would be writing in English. I've gotten significantly better over the years (been rping in English for about 12ish years now, rping in other fandoms and platforms before I started this blog years back), but I still struggle with my writing and vocabulary in said language. And even more so with Speedwagon (and the side muses, too -Jonathan and the Ogre Street guys-) due to the many differences between nowadays' lingo and Victorian England's and etc. Add to all this that I also try to translate/adapt the patterns of speech and accents that all four muses have in the original dialogues, too! Lots of work and challenges, but it's truly rewarding at the end of the day, ngl, not only because I love Speedwagon so much as well as Jonathan and the Ogre Street lads, but I also love part 1, and it's always a blast to be able to spread the love while also trying to get rid of some of the many misconceptions around them all and around this part as well and, hopefully, through my writing make people see there's a lot more to these characters than what fanon oftentimes gives them credit for.

i'd like to know more about Casper, and his relationship with his boss! and great job on your first sf drawing!!
Ayy thanks.
Casper's a more recent character I've made for a tabletop roleplay game sort of thing with some friends. To summarize who he is within the concept of the story, he's a secret agent working with the cops, specializing in infiltration and retrieval and all that jazz. He's a sorta strong silent type, emphasis on silent--he rarely speaks and seems to just appear in rooms without making a sound. He's got a lot of little lore bits going for him, standard "loner with a troubled past has to learn to trust/love other people again" kinda deal.
The campaign didn't really get very far, but I really liked playing with Casper within it, and the general lore of the world was pretty cool. Sort of a cyberpunk-y near future sort of deal, with all kinds of cybernetic augment-y fun therein. Cass doesn't have any real augments to speak of, but he does have a prosthetic left leg. Another important bit to do with the lore has to do with drugs that give special powers, with a specific variant giving crazy shit based on an individual's latent ability.
Casper's ability enables him to just regenerate and heal from all damage for a short period, which basically made him a bullet sponge if the occasion called for it. I have a number of different whump-ish scenarios on that subject, for those of you into that.
On terms of personality he's a very nose to the grindstone, dedicated person, to the point of self-detriment. To put it another way--he's an obsessive workaholic. He's absurdly reserved, and the way he acts is just plain weird sometimes. It's tough to crack his shell, but those that do find out he's kinda just a big softie. He's a sweetheart, but trauma coupled with quirks of his personality make it hard to see his humanity at times.
He kinda just is what he is. He's a weirdo, but very human underneath his cold exterior.
Cigarette smoke making him sneeze is just a little trait I added for flavor on the character sheet, but he's also allergic to dust. Not exactly prone to illness, but his scrawny frame makes any illness that does strike seem especially bad. He is quite prone to working through it and making things worse.
Him and the Chief sorta have a quasi-father+son sort of thing going on, but it's mostly by virtue of him being the only positive male role model in his life at this point. Casper is in his early 20s, but he signed up for the force straight out of high school, which contributes to that dynamic, because the Chief is an old ass man. Taken on as a pity hire but very quickly proving his worth, Casper respects the Chief and the Chief pays him that same courtesy. He's one of the few people Casper will actually chat with.
There's more I'll probably (inevitably) bring up in the future, but as a general rundown, this should give you most of what you want. Mayyyybe I'll dump a more normal Casper story here, who knows.

finally read the second volume of radiant black lol
it was 🤔 interesting
(spoilers for both book 1 and 2 obviously so don’t read if you don’t want spoilers)
not sure what exactly i think, which, tbh, seems to be my usual take on the series. it’s always like either “idk how i feel about this” or else “whoa this fucking rules?” LOL constantly wildly vacillating between one end and the other
i thought it was a little confusing at times but i might just be easily confused. The emotional stuff was good though, they seem to have a good handle on that... and the art direction fucking whips obviously, all the truth in existence stuff was extremely cool
also, mechs?!
i definitely get what they’re going for with the non-linear aspect of the storytelling but i did find it slightly unclear at times what exactly was happening because of it. not like, detrimentally so, but there was a lot of me going “oh, i see” like ten pages after the fact because of the layout, and like i said, idk if that’s a me problem or a clarity issue
anyway i also like that there seems to be a thing where they do the origin for each member of the team at the end of the book, since they did red at the end of book one and now pink in book two, so i assume yellow will have more about his origin (aside from where it intersected with pink’s) in the next volume (he can see the what?? the future?? hello??)
not sure about having nathan recover from the coma LOL i feel like, when i read the first book especially i was like, COMMIT!!! commit!!!!! don’t walk it back! kill him off! (bloodthirsty XD) but on the other hand i did really like marshall’s  journey of truth and how that led into his self-reflection about his  (uh oh relatable) insecurities and feelings of failure, as well as the way he loves nathan but he hates him but really he hates himself for not doing anything with his life, and i think his journey to bring nathan back made sense as something he would do and didn’t feel too forced or like it was “walking back” the story or anything, so like... i was actually more into that in this book than in the first book where it felt a little like it was just not ready to commit to something that serious.... though i DO think sometimes the book does struggle with balancing the serious and the humor (same) it still worked overall
that being said, i did find it kind of frustrating the way everyone was super hard on marshall after he came back after disappearing, cause it wasn’t like he was just flaky.... like, he went to see nathan every single day for at least an hour the entire time nathan was in a coma, spent so much time talking to him and being there for him, but that just... didn’t matter apparently.
even knowing that the other characters don’t know why or how he disappeared for six weeks it feels... overly harsh. like obviously he was in a bad place when he ran out (before his big ghost journey of the self) ... he was obviously freaking out, he disappeared completely for almost two months after spending all this time with nathan, and... everyone is pissed when he comes back, as if he did some horrible thing....?? like, was no one worried about him? did no one think, “huh he lost it because he was unable to accept that his best and only friend in the world was gonna die, maybe we should make sure he didn’t jump off a bridge” or something?????
literally his boss implied they thought he might have overdosed and no one cared? i mean obviously his boss is his boss and he’s just an employee who left a bunch of trash and his dog in the video store (bro???) but for everyone else, idk man i find it hard to see where nathan’s parents and ex are coming from here, when they saw how much time and effort he spent to be with nathan. it feels disproportionate to what happened even if they aren’t in the know wrt the timeskip and existence shit. it would have made more sense to me, personally, if they just didn’t care that he was gone because they were busy helping nathan with PT and shit, vs being actively judgmental and angry with him when he returned. like... idk!!! it rubbed me the wrong way!! lmao this boy did all this shit out of the love of his heart and the only thing you can see is that he couldn’t handle losing his best friend, and that makes him a bad person somehow?
the only aspect of it that fits for me is nathan himself being like bro where tf did you go after all that???? cause like he actually saw marshall, metaphysically, so it would make sense to be confused that he didn’t come to see him when he put that much work into bringing him back (until the temporal shift was explained obvs)
like MAYBE i’m misunderstanding the time shit but i don’t think i am? like, they  didn’t travel back in time and undo everything, all that stuff like him going to visit nathan every day still happened from what i gather... right? like it sounds like nathan came out of the coma while they were taking him off of life support, and it’s just that marshall didn’t get shot back into the real world until 6 weeks later.... Like okay to them it would seem like he ran out of the hospital all crazy with grief and didn’t come back... but that still doesn’t feel like an “angry” kind of thing. but i guess they already kinda disapprove of him anyway so who knows
ANYWAY
but on the flip side i do like what they did with satomi and marshall because like of COURSE marshall was not going to understand, was not going to just be fine with her, so his anger actually does feel very justifiable but of course as the reader you know why she did what she did and that she didn’t want to actually hurt anyone, let alone potentially kill someone... Which is like, i guess maybe it really is for the better that they didn’t commit to nathan dying cause like..... lol that would create some friction... but at the same time.. i mean... friction is the core of storytelling and also boy wouldn’t that add an angle to her story LMAO
radiant red: my origin... is that my fiancee (husband? i forget) fucking sucks.... also i accidentally killed the first RB and now his best friend is the new RB and he hates me. awkward!
lol
also, i thought the juxtaposition between marshall and eva was good
like you have marshall the deadbeat millennial who is super insecure about himself, basically cares about one person in the entire world but also feels insecure about how he feels that friend is better than him (which is interesting since in the first book we see how much nathan feels like a failure himself), doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doing, etc. etc.
and then gen-z eva who’s like, SO fucking busy all the time, arguably successful, but doing something that other people don’t always believe is of value, as a like, 18-20 year old (presumably? it seems like her ex-gf is in college so i assume she’s around that age) and even though she has these sponsors and a successful streaming career she also feels like she doesn’t know what she’s doing with her life and she’s super stressed and way too much of a workaholic (but she also HAS to be)
so like, the two of them are from different generations (by what, 10 years? lmao) and seem really different on the surface but have more in common than they might realize once you dig into their insecurities and stresses
also why is her cat named after the main character of home alone... if she doesn’t know any of the shit marshall knows because she’s younger than him, why that? i’m 28 and i have never seen home alone, i had to google the name
also, tiny detail, i really like the way eduardo ferigato draws marshall, specifically the shape of his nose. like, marcelo costa does some good work too, particularly in drawing the suits and the interior dimensions/universe/existence/etc. but as far as faces go i kinda prefer ferigato lol i just feel like there’s a little more variation in facial features there among all the characters, and interesting variation... like i said, costa’s good too, though, just different tastes for me

Why Loki’s Sylvie Is A Mary Sue
So I am firmly in the camp that Sylvie on the Loki series was/is a Mary Sue.  The last episode made me feel better and like maybe the show was doing a thing where they were faking you out that she was a Mary Sue only to show she was actually sort of a bad guy and I liked that.  But all the recent interviews make me think the show wants to go back to her being a Mary Sue.
But I feel like when I call her out for being a Mary Sue people tell me what are you talking about, she’s not a Mary Sue, bad things happen to her, etc.  But that doesn’t actually make her not a Mary Sue.
Also, before we start, I know some people find Mary Sue sexist.  But I personally use the term for guys and girls. I don’t use the term to belittle women.  I use the term to criticize a poorly written character.
And I know Mary Sue is often used to describe fanfic characters.  But to me, this series is kind of like a fanfic because the writers took a character who had been in canon MCU material for ten years and then created characters around that character.  So, I kind of review it like I would a fanfic.  It’s very different than if the writers had created a brand new show with all of their own new characters.
Anyway, if you are not totally familiar with the Mary Sue term, then check this out:
I know the term Mary Sue probably means different things to different people.  But I have always used these guidelines when I write my own fanfic to make sure my characters never come off as a Mary Sue.
This article really gives you a full scale of what a Mary Sue is.  If you start reading it, you’ll immediately see why Sylvie is.  But I’m going to take out the parts that most fit Sylvie just to highlight why I believe she is a Mary Sue.  I apologize for this being so long.
Mary Sue Character Traits
Personality
Erm... what personality? The typical Mary Sue doesn't have one per se, because she isn't meant to be a character; rather, she's an entity by which the author makes cool stuff happen.
I feel like that is Sylvie in a nutshell.  She doesn’t have a personality.  I feel like even though she ate screentime, I still don’t really know her at all.  The writers love to say she’s badass.  That’s not a personality.
Sometimes when I am writing stories for fun and creating new characters, I like to take surveys as my fictional characters.  Like the kind of surveys you’d see in a magazine, like personality types, what’s your dating style, etc.  I figure if I don’t know what my character would do in any of those situations, then I need to keep working on my character.  And if I was trying to fill out a survey pretending I was Sylvie I would have no idea what to answer because she doesn’t have a personality.  She’s just “cool”.
What little personality a Mary Sue has isn't as important as how other characters react to it. No matter how shy or socially awkward Mary Sue is supposed to be, other characters will be inexplicably drawn to her
This is so Sylvie.  Loki falls in love with her...why, exactly?  He falls in love with her in the big Nexus event moment...why?  Because she had a tough childhood?  Mobius spends like two seconds with her in a car and goes from hating her to saying she’s his favorite Loki.  For. No. Particular. Reason.
She's extremely persuasive; everyone finds her opinions to be better than their own
She enchants Hunter B-15 and then immediately Hunter B-15 makes it her whole entire life mission to back Sylvie up.
And occasionally she'll be a complete asshole...This can manifest itself in several ways...The author wants to write a badass but doesn't know how. This leads to a character who mistreats everyone around her and is never called out on her abrasive, casually abusive behavior.
Sylvie talked down to Loki and treated him like garbage for all of episode three, but it was never portrayed as a bad thing and we never got any impression Sylvie later felt bad for the way she treated Loki
The author doesn't know how to hold back the character, meaning that she will succeed at practically everything. This means that when she encounters rules or authority figures who would otherwise prevent her from doing what she wants to do, she rolls right through them (and they praise her for her "boldness" in defying regulations). If a bad guy is violent and aggressive, she can beat him by being more violent and aggressive (with all that entails). It's impossible for her to go overboard because she's protected by Protagonist-Centered Morality.
Sylvie is shown as a kid to immediately be able to grab a Tempad and run away.  And she can kick ass way better than Loki, for no known reason.  She is always able to fight back against the TVA when they attack her.  And she can kill lots of innocent TVA agents but it’s okay because TVA bad, Sylvie good.
Skills
She will always be superior to the canon characters, regardless of what canon has established they can do or whether it makes any sense.
Whose skill was needed to defeat Alioth?  Sylvie’s.  Of course.  Sylvie needed to teach Loki her skills in order for him to succeed (!).  And again, she is literally called the superior Loki.
Relatedly, there's no effort to her skills. She never actually trains or learns anything to become more powerful; she just wins the Super Power Lottery, or is a freakish natural learner, or is just Inexplicably Awesome
We’re told Sylvie literally taught herself magic.  She literally taught herself to enchant people.  That. Makes. No. Sense.  Like, I have so many questions.  Like, why would it even occur to her to teach herself that?  And how????????????  This is really lazy writing.
Canon Character Relationships
Mary Sue is often designed to hook up with another character, often as a form of Wish Fulfillment. This isn't that bad in and of itself (okay, it is kinda weird), but Mary Sue accomplishes this without any sense of realism. She just grabs her lover's attention straight away, and their relationship will never face any obstacles or tension; it's true love from the start and nothing else. The biggest giveaway is if the love interest is explicitly the author's favorite character, and she essentially "cures" him of all the angst that ails him (at the expense of his characterization).
Yeah, so...this one should be pretty obvious to anyone who watched the show.  Loki literally falls in love with Sylvie immediately, and then he suddenly turns from “villain” to “hero” just because of loving her.  And this was definitely at the expense of his characterization.  And Loki just knows he falls in love with her.  There’s not even any moments of hmm what do I feel for this person?  It’s just true love, immediately.
She will be related to a canon character in some way. This (marginally) helps explain such phenomena as her being a Copy Cat Sue and other characters accepting her so easily.
Sylvie is a Loki variant.  They use this to help explain why Loki is drawn to her and why their falling in love immediately “makes sense”.
Most characters give her more heed than they normally would. The good guys never stop praising her
Seriously, it was so over the top and OOC for Loki to gush over her.  He literally tells her she’s amazing.  They don’t even make it subtle.
Characters' previously established personalities change in reaction to her. Proud, arrogant gimps suddenly acknowledge her superiority in everything. Reckless youths will listen to all her advice. Responsible leaders will defer to her instead. Villains will obsess with her to the detriment of all else. Extremely competent characters will become stumbling buffoons who require her help to do anything. Sweet, mild-mannered characters whom the author doesn't like turn evil and insult her. They all become unnaturally focused on her in some way.
Again, Loki’s whole personality changed in reaction to her.  He became a buffoon who needed her help to enchant the Alioth because of course he couldn’t do anything without her!  Hunter B-15 goes from doing whatever the TVA said to fighting the TVA just because of Sylvie.
Story Elements
Mary Sue is without exception a single-person Spotlight-Stealing Squad. The entire story hinges on her existence; if you removed her, there would be no story.
Sylvie undoubtedly drove the whole story this season.  It all became about HER meeting the TVA heads because of HER trauma.  Loki’s life was only saved at the beginning because the TVA was trying to capture HER.  And SHE was the one who started the whole multiverse (!).
Mary Sue is The Chosen One, even if the setting already has one. There are many ways she can accomplish this: she can be a Sailor Earth type who "shares" the position with the canon hero; she may be vaguely "destined to help the destined one fulfill their destiny" (i.e. do all the work except the final blow so that the prophecy is still technically correct); or the canon hero may be revealed to be a Fake Ultimate Hero all along. Being the Chosen One doesn't necessarily involve her being a God-Mode Sue, especially as authors become aware of the phenomenon and try to avoid it, but it does make her critically important to the world and allows her to continue stealing the spotlight without the "god mode" label.
HWR wanted Sylvie to come with Loki in the end, like she was chosen all along right alongside Loki.  Like one of the most important characters in the entire MCU is now this character who we only met a few episodes ago.
Most Sues have an unusually Dark and Troubled Past. It's often used to create a Sympathetic Sue, but any type of Sue can have one
They tell us, over and over, how hard Sylvie’s life was because she was kidnapped by the TVA in order to create sympathy for her.
She almost never does anything wrong. In the rare instance that she does, it's usually; (a) a way for the author to disclaim her being a Mary Sue by introducing a single imperfection (that has no bearing on anything anyway), and (b) designed to show her smarts by making her feel instant remorse, and she'll be Easily Forgiven anyway:
So this one hopefully will not come true, as a lot can change between now and when the show is taped. But if the show goes on the way the behind the scenes team is talking, Sylvie immediately felt remorse for betraying Loki, and Loki has already forgiven her and is desperately looking for her.  Ugh.
Alternatively, she is more than capable of doing something wrong, be it in general moral terms or something that goes against whatever code she abides by, and she maybe even frequently does so, but don't expect the other characters or the narrative to ever acknowledge or comment on it in any real capacity. If the other characters do call her out, expect them to be treated like they're the problem for daring to criticize her at all.
Mobius calls her out for killing people, but Sylvie immediately says he’s a bad person and then Mobius agrees, because, of course.
She will often suffer from Special Snowflake Syndrome; i.e., she has a trait or backstory that sets her apart from her group or race.
She is the only female Loki, thus making her the special one among all the Lokis in episode five.
Presentation
In visual media, the camera just can't stop staring at her.
The camera would follow her in fight scenes rather than Loki.
Mary Sue Tropes
Okay, so there are specific Mary Sue tropes that Sylvie is.  One of those is Copy Cat Sue, which I think was referenced before.
Copy Cat Sue
A lot of fanfic writers...start to write something because of their passion for this character, but they find something about the character that doesn't mesh well. Maybe they're the wrong gender or are otherwise not close enough to the author's expectations...In any case, rather than put them through the Possession Sue process, they just get a Clone-O-Matic™ and out pops a Copy Cat Sue...the character might be intended as a replacement for the canon character, but without whatever icky traits the author hates. They'll then rob the spotlight, prove the canon character to be unworthy of his/her position, and either relegate the character to obsolescence or, perhaps, even remove them entirely.
Sylvie is basically a clone of Loki, she is a variant.  But she absolutely robbed the spotlight of Loki’s, and they literally call her the superior Loki.  I mean, they are literally not even being subtle about this.  And there was a feeling by myself (and a lot of other viewers) that Sylvie might ultimately replace Loki in the MCU.
Black Hole Sue
Much like a black hole, this is a Mary Sue who "sucks in" the plot and characters to her. Characters will behave outside their personalities, logic will be defied, and rules will be broken for her sake.
Sylvie really does suck up all the plot and Loki definitely behaves outside of his personality just to fit the Sylvie show.
Jerk Sue
A Mary Sue who is mean or maybe even cruel, but are still treated as an ideal person.
Once again, Sylvie is basically a jerk all of episode three, but you’ve got Loki falling over himself to call her amazing in just the next episode.
Relationship Sue
A Mary Sue who exists to be the perfect mate for a specific character...this character has everything in the plot conspiring to enforce this One True Pairing...in Fanfiction, they are the perfect beloved of a canon character.
They literally have Mobius speculate that Loki falling in love with Sylvie is so extraordinary that it causes an entire Nexus event, that’s how huge this One True Pairing is (!).  And Sylvie is the love interest of Loki, the only character who had been around before the beginning of the series
TLDR: Sylvie has all the tropes of a classic Mary Sue character.  So calling Sylvie a Mary Sue isn’t being sexist or just randomly hating on the character.  If you use common Mary Sue characteristics to examine the character, she just has too many of these characteristics to ignore.
