the problem with Seven's deadnaming (whether on the shows, or the novels, or in fic) is that it definitely IS deadnaming because it's not her name, she canonically, on two different shows, hates being called anything other than Seven or Seven of Nine, and at worst she says nothing about it if she has no recourse. The unfortunate fact of the matter though is that literally everyone knows about “Annika Hansen” because it was on the file related to her and her parents' disappearence, and it could've been interesting commentary on how having been part of the news/having publications/being credited for their work publicly makes it difficult for a lot of trans people to escape being outed and/or deadnamed. And yet the shows still keep being weirdly ambiguous about what Seven's deadname represents! We got Janeway trying to 'appeal to her humanity' by deadnaming her, Axum being grumpy that the person she is now is not the dream projection of a little girl anymore (more deadnaming), a Borg cube deadnaming her in front of Elnor (??), and an asshole who clung so hard to his status as veteran of Wolf 359 that he couldn't help but deadname his own first officer at every turn. It's like, I'm not surprised to learn that fic writers are unrepentant when doing the same thing to Seven because canon is weirdly fond of this crap as well!

- mikey does indeed have curly fur! i believe he would be considered a 'rex' rat (pictured on the left) for this trait? though the curls can be more easily seen on mice (pictured on the right). or, at least it seems that way. have not delved too deeply into the details of rodent genes and husbandry, but id assume its the same sort of mutation considering curly haired mice are also referred to as rex sometimes? either way hes a extra floofy bby 🧡

-as for raphie, unfortunately being more fluff and less shell than the average rapheal comes with its downsides. especially if you and your brothers occasionally encounter things like territorial dogs, hungry cats, or sewer crocodiles while exploring places ur dad said not supposed to go. (most of his scars will have more ninja related stories, but his ear i think got messed up from something very animal. probably around age 11 ish? old enough to sneak out from dads protection but young enough to not fully know how to handle himself alone against real danger. thankfully his ear injury looks worse than it actually is for the most part, as the damage was largely to the outer ear. his hearing wasnt super affected, except that he now has a bit of a harder time being able to track/pinpoint noises origins if its on his right side.)

-also yep! dons got some glasses that just clip/rest on the bridge of his nose! theyre mostly just for home use, as they do fall off if hes knocked around. in the field he has some goggles he tends to use (theyre helpful as they have multiple additional functions like heat-imaging, extra zoom/telescoping, and recording capabilities. but also theyll give him headaches if he wears them for too long without breaks). contacts are theoretically also an option but he absolutely hates the sensation of putting them in. so sometimes when hes tired he'll just not bother with either clips or goggles and just squint and struggle. leo hates when he does that lol.

-speaking of leo, he is def an anxious baby :) he has a few patches of fur missing on his hand cos he has the tendency to tug on it while hes thinking. he yanked and chewed on his own tail a lot when he was younger too, which is why when hes older he usually wears some wraps to cover the scars left from that behavior. he finds those scars specifically to be kinda embarrassing and shameful because they werent from any battle or life-lesson, just his own 'inability to control himself'. all of his brothers have repeatedly called him out on the fact that that is not a healthy way to think about his anxiety or mental health, but leo insists hes fine. hes kinda convinced himself that a proper warrior always has control over his own body* and his own thoughts, thus he should be able to just like willpower-brute-force his way into 'being better'. (this line of thinking pisses raph off so much he has to leave and go hit something)
Splinter also tries to talk him through some of that internalized guilt/shame/everything, but splinters very metaphorical, poetic, and indirect when it comes to talking about Big Things, which combined with how much leo gets caught in his own head, makes it kinda hard to gauge how much these talks actually help
*this is made extra fun considering leos also ftm trans, so he is faced with a body that fundamentally disobeys him perhaps more than the average rat-man.

-and im still going back and forth between a few species for splinter, but im leaning mostly towards an African Spurred Tortoise! they have these beautiful if kinda subtle geometric shell patterns and are the third largest species of tortoise in the world. the only thing that doesnt fit perfectly with Splints is that (allegedly) their lifespan in captivity is around 50ish years, whereas im p sure Tortoise Splinter is well over 75, probably closer to 90 when the boys are born and hes mutated into Old Man Papa.
but maybe hes just a particularly long lasting African Spurred Tortoise.
the Hamato family has taken very good care of him for many decades after all. :)

How a Female Pippin Affects the Story: a Queer Ramble
Pippin is one of my favorite musicals, and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it would mean for the show if Pippin was a woman. In many ways, the story wouldn’t change it all. It’s about a person trying to find their purpose in life, guided by a performance troupe which is clearly a metaphor for mental illness. But, there are some changes.
With a female Pippin, the story is about a closeted lesbian going through an identity crisis, explores gender roles, discovers her sexuality, finds love, gets a cottagecore girlfriend, learns to accept herself, and fights internalized homophobia.
Let’s go bit by bit through the story, pointing out how things would change.
The Leading Player welcomes the audience to the story of Pippin, the firstborn child of Charlemagne, wanting you to cast aside all previous misconceptions. We meet Pippin, who has just finished university, “where [her] father had sent [her] to study, so that [she] may embark upon [her] life with a maximum of choices and possibilities.” (Feminist icon King Charlemagne??)
Pippin tells the faculty that she’s grateful for her newfound knowledge, but what she’s looking for can’t be found in books. She doesn’t know what she’s looking for, but it’s going to be something completely fullfilling. This is a very relatable experiences when you’re deeply closeted. You don’t know what you want, but you know that something’s missing.
For Corner of the Sky, I would keep the lyrics masculine. “So many men seem destined to settle for something small, but I won’t rest until I know I’ll have it all.” Although Pippin is a woman, she compares herself to men. Men have the freedom to dream, to be independent, and she wants that. But still, she’s going to do so much more than them.
Pippin tells her father she wants to be a soldier, again aligning herself with masculinity. We see after that Pippin isn’t a violent person and isn’t meant for battle, but doesn’t realize it yet. She thinks this will be fullfilling. It is a common queer experience to try to shove yourself into one box, thinking that is how you’re supposed to present. This Pippin thinks, “In order to prove that I’m unique, I should present myself in a masculine way by participating in war.” But of course, there is no right or wrong way to be a lesbian. A hobby or interest or trait doesn’t mean you’re gay or trans.
Pippin realizes she’s not a soldier. Her grandma Berthe tells her to find live in the moment and enjoy the simple things. This is when Pippin discovers.... women. I’m not gonna paste all of the lyrics (here is a link!) but the gist of the song With You is that Pippin is telling each girl, “You’ve awakened me, and I want to be with you” but the joke is that while he’s singing this beautiful earnest song, he’s hopping from girl to girl. However, even if you keep in that joke, a female Pippin is basically saying, “Oh, this is what I’ve been feeling. I’m a lesbian. Something has awakened in me and I want to explore these feelings.” (Cue the epic orgy scene!)
However, having all of this sex without love leaves Pippin feeling “empty and vacant” (obviously not everyone needs romantic love to be fulfilled but this is just one story ok). She’s had this sexual awakening but still hasn’t found love yet. So she starts a revolution, kills her father, and becomes queen, as one does of course.
Onto Act 2!
Pippin realizes she isn’t very good at being a queen, but TLP tells her that she’s on the right track. She’s discovered by Catherine, a widowed farmhand. TLP is concerned that Catherine is actually attracted to Pippin. Catherine says, “[She] put [her] hand on my face! They don’t usually do that.” At this point we know that this isn’t the first time TLP has told the story of Pippin, but this is the first girl Pippin. And this is the first time Catherine has fallen in actual love with one of the Pippins. Yeah, lots of lesbian implications there.
Catherine and Pippin begin a relationship and it’s very adorable. But then when Catherine asks Pippin to sit at the head of the table, Pippin freaks out. Even though this is what she wants, to live this simple life with Catherine and her son, a part of her is telling her it’s “wrong.” But of course, it isn’t wrong, but her internalized homophobia is telling her otherwise. So she leaves, and Catherine stops the show for a second so she add a new song, I Guess I’ll Miss the Man Girl.
“I guess I'll miss the girl She's gone now, in a whirl Her face was far from fine But still I'll miss her face And wonder if she's missing mine Some days she wouldn't say A pleasant word all day Some days she'd scowl and curse But there were other days When she was really even worse Some men are heroes Some men outshine the sun Some men are simple, good men This girl wasn't one And I won't miss her moods Her gloomy solitudes Her blunt abrasive style But please don't get me wrong She was the best to come along In a long, long while.”
That’s gay!
TLP and the troupe tell her that the only fulfilling thing will be to to light herself on fire and “become one with the flame.” Basically, they’re telling her to kill herself. She almost goes through with it, but she says there has to be something more than death. Catherine and Theo come back on and stand by her. Now Pippin has found her purpose. To be with a woman, to have a family together, to live a beautiful quiet life.
The three are stripped of their costumes. The lights and music are out. There’s no more mystique. But this is what Pippin and Catherine want. To be their authentic selves, even if it doesn’t look glamarous or as beautiful as people wanted them to be. They’re not putting on a false performance for anybody anymore.
They walk off, but Theo stays on, singing the reprise of Corner of the Sky, with the queer implications of “I don’t know who I am.” Theo is a young queer kid. But of course, TLP and the troupe enter, implying the internalized homophobia, depression, and suicidal thoughts that are so pervasive within the queer community. Blackout.
So what have we learned today, kids?
Pippin is an allegory for queerness and self acceptance
Pippin and Catherine are cottagecore lesbians raising their gay son
ummm  be yourself or something
On a serious note: I just wanted to take a moment to say, if you’re a closeted queer person: you are perfect just the way you are. And I know it’s hard. Believe me, I know. But even when it feels like the entire world is against you, please know that you’re not alone. You are under no obligation to come out until you feel ready to do so. But right now, there is a whole community of people who will welcome you with open arms.

okay brain if i make the post will you shut up
so love, me normally can be interpreted in a romantic sense, and it would make sense for it to be interpreted in a romantic sense of someone who desperately wishes they weren’t so different from the norm, so “bad”, so “abnormal”; that they’re so tired of being different and being treated different that they just want to be loved like they’re normal, loved like a nobody
but that’s not what i’m making this post about god damnit keep on track-
[under a read more because it’s very heavy. tw external and internal queerphobia, existential despair, also this is so long oh god 2k words]
 i could make a joke about how “cross my i’s, dot my t’s” is a joke about going on testosterone but uh i’m just going to talk about first stanza 
“I was delivered holding scissors, I live deliberately, I’m a quitter And a winner anyway, cause I never agreed to participate in this game”
this’ll come up later in this long ass post but the child is delivered holding the scissors to cut their own umbilical cord. when a child is born and they are a queer individual, it is up to them to cut the ties that hurt them the most - even the most close and familial ones. in the way that an umbilical cord is cut because the baby no longer needs the mother’s nutrients, the child is born with the inevitable fate of having to cut off those whose approval and love they can no longer thrive off of, or can no longer receive. or, it could be a metaphor for the scissors of fate, where the child is born with their fate in their own hands and they, being an outlier in queerphobic society, must make do with what they’ve got.
“i live deliberately, i’m a quitter” the child lives deliberately in their quest for self discovery and their need to understand and accept their queerness but at the same time they are a quitter in all the things that society considers normal but they cannot utilize to function: a white collar job when the child is an artist, a nuclear family when the child just doesn’t want one, keeping in contact with your parents when the parents do not accept their child.
“And a winner anyway, cause I never agreed to participate in this game” this comes up later in the post as well but yeah the child never agreed to participate in this game of life. they didn’t ask to be a player, but by default of their unwillingness and their lack of consent, they are made a winner because they are the only player at the table of their own life. they are made an unwilling winner for something they never had the consciousness to consent to experience. they can be called “strong” later in life for overcoming queerphobia, lauded as a “winner” over their oppression, but it rings hollow because to be a real winner, you have to have agreed to be playing in the first place. 
and then the chorus, this is pretty obvious. like the 
“And I'd rather be normal. Yes, so normal I suggest that we keep this informal Cause a normal human being wouldn't need To pretend to be normal to be normal Well I guess that's the least that I owe ya To be normal in a way I couldn’t be C’mon, c’mon, and love me normally”
because you know, that could kinda be interpreted as a queer child talking to their queerphobic parents. it doesn’t fucking matter if their parents are proud of them for their grades or their achievements now because no matter what, they’re proud of the persona of the child they’ve constructed for themselves. they’re proud of a fraud. the child knows they’ll never truly be loved the way they are, that their parents will only love who they want the child to be and they’ll only love the image they have of their child. think of it like internalized queerphobia, homophobia, transphobia, the idea that similar to i/me/myself, it would be easier if i were a girl [or cisgender, for a general application] and it would be easier if i were normal. the child would rather be normal in the way their parents see normal and they feel that they owe their parents, for all their parents have done to provide for them and pay for their bills and everything, the bare minimum of pretending to be normal so that they don’t break their parents’ hearts. and it’s really for the sake of everyone in the family because if they’re outed, the parents will argue, the parents will be sad, their siblings will be upset by the arguing and the mourning, they feel as though they owe their family this bare minimum of pretending -  both for their own safety, and for the prosperity of their family. moving on.
“If I could live in third person, well I don’t think life would be much worse than it is In the current tense, presently, this sentence ending in question marks or dot dot dot…”
the child feels like if they were an outsider witnessing their own life in a third person perspective, it still wouldn’t change a lot. or it wouldn’t be much worse, it might actually be better, in a sense, because they’re fully disassociated from the identity that alienates them so from their parents and their parents’ approval. but they’re living in first person, so this sentence (their life, basically, drawing upon how a suicide prevention thing a while back was using a semicolon as a symbol of your life being an author’s sentence) ends in two ways. a question mark, showing how their existence as someone outside the “norm” of a queerphobic society is rife with constant questioning and identity gaslighting because of how “abnormal” it is to deviate from the norm that you are left without many resources to figure yourself out. you die at the end of the day perhaps not even knowing who you truly are because society has not yet normalized terms that could better articulate your identity, and because you can never really know yourself. or, your sentence ends in a dot dot dot. forever unfinished. you leave with so many loose ends - maybe you move out and cut off contact with your family forever, and live perhaps happier but never knowing if they change their mind (oh god now i’m thinking about change your mind from steven universe and how steven’s entire story is a metaphor for the trans experience). maybe you decide to continue pretending and you cut off the option of really getting to know yourself a little bit better, and you die never knowing who you could have been. so living in full disassociation would at the very least not be much worse than how the first person tense currently is.
“I drank myself to death to be the afterlife of the party When the afterparty came, I was rolling in my grave”
no i am not an alcoholic, thank you very much, i am a responsible person. but the substance abuse reference can be applied to any self destructive habit that arises out of a need to cope - in this case, the child’s need to cope with their fractured identity. maybe they turn towards being hyperfeminine or hypermasculine in an attempt to feel connected with their assigned gender, which branches out into so many different destructive habits (aforementioned drinking, drugs, eating disorders, etc). they do so to become the “afterlife” of the party - if you think about a “party” as a moment in time, it can be the moment you are in in your life. the child turns towards these destructive habits to try to achieve the unachievable. to bring the afterlife into life, to bring their parents’ false image of the child into fruition when that is never impossible and that in itself becomes destructive. but they do this in the current moment of their life, in the current party, so when the afterparty comes, they’re already dead. when the afterparty comes, they roll in their grave because it’s a hollow call for what they could have been: a more genuine person to themselves, a happier individual free of parents’ queerphobia. 
“I want you to love the way they so seamlessly, like a dream for me, so beautifully, oh so dutifully jam that square peg in the round hole in their hearts”
the bridge monologue is very very romantic-coded and i don’t think i can pull much meaning from the first bit but here, have the “jam the square peg in the round hold in their hearts”. the child has learned to “seamlessly”, like a second instinct, to jam the square peg of their parents’ false image into the round hole in their hearts, to somehow cram something into a space that was never meant to fit and should not be fitted at all. this quote speaks as though it’s the child talking to their parents, telling them, “i want you to love me, but you are only loving me as i am now, when i am literally destroying myself to be who you’re capable of loving”
“I want you to tell 'em that you love the way that they don't stick out like sore middle fingers That they crawl their way up the side of the bell curve, stick their flag in the peak, and slide their way back down I want you to tell them that you love the way that they're not maladaptive, not malcontent, not malignant or maleficent, but rather that you love them exactly the way that everybody else is”
yep. so the bell curve, the statistical graph, the idea that their child could sit perfectly at the average as the cishet kid their parents expected them to be. the way that they’re not “maladaptive, not malcontent, not malignant or maleficent”, which can all be adjectives weaponized in queerphobic rhetoric against the queer community. and the final line, that their parents love the child “exactly the way that everybody else is”. their parents hold their child to a supposed “norm” that does not really exist because of how suppressed queerness is in society, that the norm is most likely not the norm at all and who’s to say what’s a norm? their parents love them when they are “normal” and it feels like that’s the only way they’ll ever be able to love you. they’ll not be able to learn how to love a different you. 
“I was nothing before so I couldn’t have asked to be born I'll be nothing again, so what am I between now and then? Is there nothing to fear? Cause sh*t's getting weird So to God who made this man, you better have one hell of a plan”
deep breath. okay. okay. first of all, will wood’s inflections from the last line of the first bridge all throughout the second bridge are gorgeous and hit so hard. 
but yeah. here we go here we go ho boy
the idea that birth in itself is actually an immoral thing, since children don’t ask to be born. they don’t ask to be brought into this world, to experience this world, to develop mental illnesses and to face queerphobia or discrimination or danger in any sense because of who they are. they don’t ask to be born into a family that consistently alienates them and forces them to keep quiet about something that’s so important to them. and the child, in learning that their parents are queerphobic and will never accept them the way they are, realizes now even more that they never asked to be born. they didn’t ask for this closeted life. they didn’t ask for this kind of pain, this kind of false love, this kind of otherness. they never asked for any of this. 
“i’ll be nothing again...” the idea that life is finite, that they’ll become that “nothing” they were before they were born if they come out to their parents because in that sense, it’s the parents asking themselves, “why did we have a child that turned out this way? we didn’t ask for this kind of child. we never asked for this kind of person. we never asked to raise them as they are now.” look if you can’t fucking accept that your child will be anything other than a cishet individual made to play out your nuclear family life so you can project your ideas of parenting and hopefully help parent your grandchildren in all the ways you fucked up your own kids i want you to-to- the window is right there. leave. fucking leave. 
“Is there nothing to fear? Cause sh*t's getting weird So to God who made this man, you better have one hell of a plan”
is there really nothing to fear, from your parents? they’re supposed to be your closest guidance but is there truly nothing to fear from them if they hate the idea of who you really are? the child is questioning their identity (”shit’s getting weird”) and everything they’ve ever perceived their parents as is thrown up in the air.
and we can’t have all this internalized queerphobia without some religious trauma, can we? the child asks the all knowing, all seeing God, “what was your plan for me?” did this God intend for this child to have to go through this pain? this suffering which is often carried out in the name of aforementioned deity? this God better have one hell of a plan, really, because this child sure as hell needs one, and this God better have a good enough excuse to be able to redeem themselves in this child’s eyes. 
all the choruses are just the child constantly asking their parents: “am i normal enough?” “do i need to pretend more?” “i know i owe you this much at least, can you tell me you love me? the normal me?” “can you tell me you love me at all?”

i’ve been aching to commentate spirit phone’s commentary for ages. glad i finally got around to it, this was an ejoyable experience. liveblog below the cut
-i'm like half certain i've heard this commentary before. maybe not the whole way through & it was probably actual years ago
-nice hearing stuff like this. in-depth personal view of the album-making process. makes it seem like more of a real thing i could do myself someday

-i could probably go real in depth about neil cicierega/tally hall parallels specifically concerning like. the arc of their musical careers. but i won't, here
-wild how i legitimately don't care much about micheal jackson
-didnt we get a bunch of spirit phone stems from the needlejuice release/his patreon? we could probably hear the funny track he speaks of here in that
-i love hearing musical artists, especially neil cicierega, talking about the meanings of their songs. like, not only has this song been claimed to hell & back by the tumblr gays, but with later ones i just can't see where he gets these ideas from. also, claiming there's any one meaning or plot to a song just seems silly to me
-shoutout to neil reusing a midi from like, 1998, that he made at 12 years old, whose entire melody was reused for the main verses of everybody loves raymond. loved finding that out on my own 2 years ago. now it's common trivia in this fandom. not bad times

-ah! ancient aliens! my least favorite track on this album. i cant even claim to have the least interest in a popular one i've just generally not liked this one much from the beginning. so im curious to see what neil's got to say, i think ive been in ~new commentary zone for a while now
-anyway. newest update on the loolin not realizing a song's funky time signature front: i think this one's in 6/4. or at least switches a lot between time signatures. granted i dont listen to it very often for the reasons stated above
-see the way neil describes it. eldritch horror upon being visited by the unknown at a time when humanity'd hadn't even yet had a chance to imagine such a thing occurring. should be right up my alley. but the sound itself & many of the lyrics simply turn me away.
-must i specify i don't dislike it? spirit phone is neil's best album it not being my favorite doesn't mean i think it's bad yadda yadda nobody should be surprised by this it's not like anyone in these fandoms reads my liveblogs <3
-granted i think this is. the first bit of spirit phone content i've made on my blog ever. so who knows things can change <3
-the transitions in spirit phone are much less view-monster transition tracks & more extended outros. view-monster's were a bit more intro than outro sure but they also seemed directed upon making a 2-way rather than 1-way bridge between tracks. or something like that

-like, his whole stance on interpreting songs is something i agree with almost entirely. you can take it at face value, you can dig to their very depths, you can listen to songs without caring what the lyrics mean whatsoever, and those are all fun. & yeah while any of these people can be annoying as one of the types who enjoys gliding on the surface more than anything i find those who dedicate themselves to figuring out the whole meaning of a song over anything else to be both slightly scary & slightly annoying <3 keep up the good work

Cantatio: Chapter Four
Ship: Lan Zhan / Wei Ying (POV Lan Zhan)
Summary: Wei Ying and Nie Huaisang cause trouble in Lan Qiren’s class. Lan Zhan isn’t amused.

Lan Wangji had expected the first day of classes to be long.
But not this long.
The expression ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ had never held much truth for the young cultivator, who believed that a better phrasing would be ‘time proceeds at a pace directly proportional to one’s concentration.’
Being trained in Daoist meditation techniques since his first sign of infantile self-awareness had granted Lan Wangji the ability to bend his perception of time with his focus. When he rose long before dawn and sat in Lotus Position to meditate, the silent depths of stillness enabled him to traverse hours in what felt like the blink of an eye, yet the insights he obtained remained undistorted by the time skip.
Unless he was disrupted by the loud crash of Wei Wuxian falling out of bed on the other side of the room.
But that was beside the point.
The more Lan Wangji focused, the faster the world moved. His studies were one of the pursuits that he paid the most careful attention to. He listened to professors with unwavering interest, picking up on the slightest inflections of their voices, and he ruminated on intriguing sentences for hours after a lesson finished. Therefore it made sense that although the school day would be long, its duration would be reasonable, for his mind would be well-occupied.
Yet Lan Qiren was still lecturing about Ancient Texts, and it was only the first class of the day!
The problem was not a lack of interest. Ancient Texts had always been a special aptitude of Lan Wangji. The problem was that he wasn’t fully focused on the lecture, and therefore it dragged on. As Lan Qiren’s stentorian voice intoned perfectly pronounced phrases of poetry, his mind kept ping-ponging between thoughts of what he would say to Wen Qing about last night, what Wei Wuxian looked like while sleeping—no, that never crossed his mind—and what could be inside the strange closet that sat smugly in his dorm room. He imagined that the closet was fully aware of the mess it had caused and was snickering at the shameful memory of Lan Wangji being thrown around a girls’ dormitory by a giant beetle.
Rule #1034: Learning comes first.
Lan Wangji needed to recenter his focus.
He picked up his brush and pressed the end of its handle into his palm. It was highly improper to mistreat a calligraphy tool like this, but Lan Wangji was getting desperate.
The pressure from the blunt wood roused him back into the moment.
Lan Qiren was pacing alongside the disciples’ desks, his mustache whiskers quivering as he spoke with a stern yet aloof tone.
“The poem I just recited was translated from an ancient predecessor to our language. Of course, translations never capture the full nuance of a passage. Therefore, now that you have heard but a cloudy reflection of this magnus opus, we will begin analyzing the poem in its original language, Trans-Himalayan,” Lan Qiren said.
The entire classroom groaned. Nie Huaisang rested his chin in his palm, looking the most bored out of everyone.
“What’s the point?” Wei Wuxian muttered. “When are we ever going to need to know Trans-Himalayan?”
“Shut up. You’ll need to know Trans-Himalayan if you want to pass the class. That should be enough,” hissed Jiang Cheng.
A few moments later, Nie Huaisang leaned over. “…Who are Tran, Sim, and Leia? They sound like the type to have a threesome.”
“…”
Every disciple in the room sucked in a collective breath of shocked amusement, their twisted smiles on the verge of bursting.
Nie Huaisang opened his silk fan and covered his own smirk in a hurry, looking at the ceiling with light eyes that concealed a calculated satisfaction beneath their innocence. A single wheeze escaped from Wei Wuxian’s mouth before he could stop it, like air escaping from a balloon.
Lan Qiren did not seem to notice. He criticized the Jin Clan disciple who was stumbling over foreign words as she recited the ancient poem for the class.
Of course, once you let go of the mouth of a balloon that’s full of air, it’s inevitable that it will fly around the room in a sputtering chaos.
“Aiya, Huaisang, that’s not how you say it,” Wei Wuxian murmured. “You’ve got the wrong people in the bed. It’s supposed to be pronounced, ‘Tran, Sim, and Lan Qiren.’”
Now at least five disciples were snickering. Nie Huaisang was silently buried in his fan, but his scrunched eyes and heaving shoulders said more than enough. Even Jiang Cheng, who was clearly counting how many hours of detention he’d get if he slammed Wei Wuxian’s face into the desk, could not prevent his lips from curling.
Ridiculous, Lan Wangji thought. He was sorry he had tuned his mind back in to the classroom.
The Jin Clan disciple was still fumbling through her recitation. All eyes were on Lan Qiren, but not for the reason the old professor would have hoped.
“Remember that really poetic line? ‘Balance to both ends of the world,’” Wei Wuxian parroted in sing-song. “Well, that’s the part where Tran and Sim each grab one side of Lan Qiren’s mustache.”
Jiang Cheng was the first to break. His high-pitched giggle—unhinged and childlike—pierced through the air like a siren. However, that surprising turn of events was quickly forgotten as the entire room erupted into feverish laughter.
The balloon had popped.
“What is the meaning of this?! Settle down! Everyone, quiet!” Lan Qiren huffed. He held his arms stiffly out to his sides with the sleeves of his robes draping in two giant hoops, as if he wanted to suck all the laughter into his sleeves to snuff it out.
Lan Wangji glared at Wei Wuxian, but the insolent clown was so overcome with giggling that he did not notice.
Apparently, Lan Qiren had followed his nephew’s line of sight to find the culprit, and soon accosted him.
“Wei Wuxian! What have you done? Confess to your actions!”
This only increased the volume of the laughter that ricocheted off the classroom ceiling into Lan Qiren’s offended ears, which seemed to spew out hot steam in protest. Lan Wangji felt a bit guilty for unintentionally ratting out Wei Wuxian to be the recipient of his uncle’s wrath.
Wei Wuxian finally reigned in his mirth and looked up at Lan Qiren with precariously composed sincerity. “I was only saying that I want to write a poem about mustache whiskers. I call it The Ballad of Catfish.”
Actually, no, Lan Wangji did not feel bad at all.
“Wei Wuxian! What is this disrespect? My classroom is no place for jokes! You should be focusing on the poem in Trans-Himalayan!”
The disciples bit their lips at the mention of the word that had started the whole fiasco, but the balloon of laughter had finally deflated.
“Wei Wuxian!”
“Yes, Shifu?”
“Do you know how to read this poem?”
“Not yet, Shifu.”
“Then why have you been chatting instead?”
“…Because I do not know how to read the poem, Shifu.”
Lan Qiren’s blood was boiling. “Wei Wuxian, since you are so illiterate, you will continue reading the poem to the class!” he barked, apparently not caring about the contradiction he just created.
“Yes, Shifu.”
Wei Wuxian blinked at his textbook.
“Where did we leave off?”
Lan Qiren sighed and shook his head with weary disapproval.
Wei Wuxian was actually able to perfectly read the last line the Jin Clan disciple had said, to Lan Qiren’s obvious displeasure. However, he was already stumped by elementary words in the next line. He must have been reciting from memory and had already reached the end of his mind’s fishing reel.
“Uh…um…” He looked up at the professor like a child asking for a piggyback ride.
“Wangji, please assist Young Master Wei.”
Lan Wangji was used to being called on to help other students. After all, it was rare that he did not know the answer.
“Swan.” Lan Wangji said the word in both languages for clarity.
Wei Wuxian nodded and continued. He was stuck again three syllables later.
“Wangji,” Lan Qiren called.
Lan Wangji looked down at the complex inky scribbles in the poetry book on his desk. He realized that he did not understand the line either.
“Lan Zhan? Some help?” Wei Wuxian said.
Lan Wangji paused, then flattened the page in front of him as he spoke.
“I do not know.”
Wei Wuxian eyes widened in disbelief. He looked at Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng scoffed and turned his head away, but his pupils soon snuck into the corners of his eyes to observe Lan Wangji with chilled interest.
“Well, huh, then…” Lan Qiren frowned. “I suppose this text is rather difficult. But that is no excuse for misbehavior! The line reads, ‘Horrified, the warrior realized that, like a swan crushing her eggs as she shielded them from a snake, it was his hand that plunged the knife into the Emperor’s heart.’ It is a pivotal turning point in the poem’s narrative and is frequently quoted by other authors. It is critical that you grasp every literary metaphor related to this line!”
The rest of Ancient Texts passed peacefully. Lan Wangji enjoyed the challenge of dissecting the poem in its original language. It was a tragic story about a warrior who, upon learning that he had been manipulated by the enemy in an assassination plot to kill the emperor he served, abandoned his beautiful homeland to hide in repentant shame for eternity.
Although the stories were different, it reminded Lan Wangji of his father.
He quickly shoved that thought away.
After class ended, the disciples entered the courtyard outside. Lan Wangji hung back. He had to tell his uncle about last night’s incident. Someone needed to be alerted if a portal really did exist in a Cloud Recesses dormitory, and who better to inform than the overseer of the Cloud Recesses himself, Clan Leader Lan Qiren?
However, his uncle already had a lot of tasks on his plate, especially now that he and the clan leaders had to track down wherever the monster spirit that possessed the beetle had come from. Furthermore, it would be embarrassing for Lan Wangji to convey the full details of his story, and he still did not have an adequate explanation for what had transpired. And he definitely was not secretly worried that if he exposed the truth of the closet door, he and Wei Wuxian would be relocated and would no longer be roommates. That was not a factor.
Yet the rules tugged at his feet and at his tongue.
Shoulder the weight of morality. Be strict with yourself. Be loyal and filial.
If he did not tell his uncle…perhaps his brother would be an acceptable confidante?
But first, Wen Qing. He stepped out into the sunny courtyard.
“Wei-xiong, that was hilarious! I’ve never had such a good time in a class!” Nie Huaisang said as he bounded over to his dark-robed friend.
“Ahaha, why give me all the credit, though? You’re a funny little devil as well.”
Nie Huaisang shook his hands wildly in front of him, as if this suggestion were too much for him to hold.
“No, no, no, I wasn’t trying to be funny! I really didn’t know how to say it!”
“Hahaha! That’s even funnier, then!”
Jiang Cheng elbowed Wei Wuxian in the ribs. “Neither of you are funny.” He grabbed his brother by the arm and started dragging him across the courtyard. “Move your ass. If I’m late to the daozhang’s class because of you, I’m going to punch your head in.”
“What are you fussing about, Jiang Cheng? You were laughing louder than anyone!”
“Was not!”
Lan Wangji swooped in front of their path. “Causing disruptions in class is prohibited.”
Jiang Cheng scowled. Nie Huaisang covered his face with his fan and hid the rest of his body behind Wei Wuxian, who stood smirking with his hands on his hips.
“Aiya, Lan Zhan! You better be careful! If you say those rules so much, you’ll turn into the scroll they’re written on!”
Lan Wangji furrowed his brow. “Boring.”
“Yeah, exactly! Okay, step aside, Lan Zhan, you’re going to make us late for class. Unless you want to be the reason we break another rule? Haha! Come on, let’s go,” he said as he tugged Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang away.
“Get your fat hands off me,” Jiang Cheng said with a shove.
Nie Huaisang turned his head over his shoulder and waved. “Bye, Second Young Master Lan!”
Lan Wangji eyed Nie Huaisang suspiciously as he scurried after the bickering siblings and disappeared around a temple at the far side of the courtyard. In the time Lan Wangji had spent accompanying Lan Xichen on trips to Qinghe, he had learned a few things about the small, skittish young cultivator.
Nie Huaisang was crafty. When he wanted entertainment, all he needed to do is throw a match into the firepit—nothing profound, just a provocative little comment that could provide some kindling—and then he would sit back and watch as everyone burned down the world around him. Most assumed he carried his signature fans for decoration. Lan Wangji theorized that he carried them to exercise his talent for fanning the flames of discord.
Of course, if confronted, Nie Huaisang would insist that he knew three times less about the world than anyone else.
On his own, the boy was manageable. Endearing, even.
But next to Wei Wuxian?
It was a partnership forged in Hell.
After the troublesome trio disappeared, Lan Wangji searched for Wen Qing, hoping to apologize for intruding in her room and discuss the teleportation closet with her, but she had disappeared after Ancient Texts.
He caught sight of her again right as Song Lan’s Beings & Creatures class was beginning. To his disappointment, he would have to wait until its completion to speak to her.
It was a long wait. Song Lan’s class did not pass peacefully.

The Manics and Gender Identity, Part 1
There is a lot to unpack in Nicky and Richey’s early lyrics pertaining to gender, particularly in terms of identifying with women. Richey approaches the subject — as he is wont to do — with regard to the exploitation and degradation of the female image, while Nicky’s attitude is more inquisitive and casual. Both use lyrics to express their own personal “What if?”
Make no mistake: I’m not claiming that either Nicky or Richey is/was non-cis or trans or anything other than curious. But it’s clear from their personal lyric struggles and hard-won lifestyle choices that this was a different time they were living in. In the 1990s, gender identity was not a topic with any kind of mainstream recognition, at least beyond those who wanted a “sex change” or girls who were considered “one of the boys”. I think it’s fascinating, at least from my perspective, to go back and examine the themes of gender dysphoria, identity, and frustration in lyrics written before any of it was part of popular conversation, and in a way that emphasized the then absolute cultural disconnect between desire and society.
Also, it’s important to note that both Nicky and Richey have presented gender in ways that don’t have anything to do with lyrics. Nicky is comfortable in traditionally female clothing and wears dresses on and off stage; both band members wore makeup and feathers on a regular basis. I’ve tried to write about gender in terms of lyrics only, but at times I do take examples from visual media.
Finally, keep in mind that yours truly is non-binary, and the discussion will hopefully not reek of a cis person watching queer men from behind bars in a zoo.

Little Baby Nothing
Although Richey seemed to find comfort in claiming that his lyrics were about the larger world — in the case of Little Baby Nothing, feminism and the way women are perceived in media — a closer look usually reveals a personal stake. When I discussed the meaning of this song previously, I emphasized that the “Little baby nothing” in question is clearly Richey himself, writing in the first person and deconstructing his own image to align with a kind of mindless female groupie used for sex.
My mind is dead, everybody loves me Wants a slice of me Hopelessly passive and compatible Need to belong, oh the roads are scary Hold me in your arms I wanna be your only possession
Richey often refers to himself as a “slut” and a “prostitute” and uses self-referential porn star imagery in his lyrics (So Dead: “You need a fix I’m your prostitute”, Yes: “there’s no lust in this coma even for a fifty”), aligning the industries of pornography and music performance in very vivid ways most often pertaining to exploitation. Appropriately, singing pivotal stanzas on this track is none other than Traci Lords, arguably most famous (especially in the early 90s) for an underage porn scandal.  
What’s more, in the lyrics booklet for Generation Terrorists, there is a quotation or excerpt included for each song. The following corresponds to Little Baby Nothing:
“The male chromosome is an incomplete female chromosome. In other words the male is a walking abortion; aborted at the gene stage. To be male is to be deficient, emotionally limited; maleness is a deficiency disease and males are emotional cripples.” -Valerie Solanos.
Ninety percent of what the Manics said and did in their early years was intended to be shocking and/or ironic. Of course they were trying to incite anger and riots, the questioning of institutions, and a teardown of normalcy. But the fact that Richey later used part of this radical statement as the title to one of his songs (“Of Walking Abortion”, natch) proves that he took it somewhat seriously, even if only in the most simple sense — that part of him resented his own maleness.
Life Becoming a Landslide
This is another song I’ve previously discussed, mostly in the arena of Nicky and Richey individualizing their distinctive voices into lines that can clearly be attributed to one or the other. In a song about nature vs nurture and the plastic confines of greater humanity cracking down on who or what someone is really supposed to be, we have:
Life becoming a landslide Ice freezing nature dead Life becoming a landslide I don’t wanna be a man
As far as writing style goes, Nicky was always fairly straightforward. Richey loves to convolute his message with proper nouns and alternating verb cases and a lack of a subject just to throw  people off, but here’s Nicky, my boy, just saying, “Dude. Being a man sucks. I don’t like this.”
He could mean that being human in general sucks. But, since his attitude towards women leads me to believe he would not abbreviate humanity in this way, and given his and Richey’s track record with gender and Nicky’s well-documented gender presentation, I think it’s clear the lyric means that he doesn’t want to be male. Because he feels it doesn’t suit him, for whatever reason. And that nature failed by making him a man instead of a woman.
Yes
‘Yes’ is an incredible song. Its major-chord melody juxtaposed against Richey’s raw portrait of degradation is truly a thing to behold. The theme? Being used, prostitution both literal and metaphorical (“For sale? dumb cunt’s same dumb questions”), exploitation in the name of capitalism (“In these plagued streets of pity you can buy anything”), and reaching the lowest possible point of existence (“Purgatory’s circle, drowning here, someone will always say yes”). But the chorus — the chorus boasts one of the rawest images of sexual violence the band has ever used:
He’s a boy, you want a girl so tear off his cock Tie his hair in bunches, fuck him, call him Rita if you want
Wow. Okay. Where to begin? The implication here is that gender, along with everything else, is mutable if you have enough money and power to abuse people. However, it appears the change would be made not to entertain others, but to appeal to a specific person, sexually (“fuck him”). The “you” in question is clearly attracted to women, so the narrator offering to mutilate himself to please them can be seen as a last-ditch act of desperation. (“It feels like this massive defeat,” said a friend. “You can make him a woman to pleasure someone, but what’s left to change after that?”)
Richey wrote most of the song; “Rita”, obviously, is the name used for an alternative female identity. But who would Rita be? Richey seems to be wondering. Would she still be me? And would the change even be worth the affections of whomever he’s speaking to? If the means are so drastic (and difficult to picture without experiencing secondhand pain), that answer would usually be “no”. But the song is called “Yes”. I would say yes to anything at this point, Richey is saying, even the most extreme sexual violence imaginable, if that’s what you wanted.
4st 7lb
This is an extreme example of Richey using world issues to examine his own nature. Although anorexic himself, Richey writes “4st 7lb” from the point of view of an obsessive young girl admiring thin models. There could be multiple reasons for this, not the least of which is that when a person fails to fit the “classic” case of an eating disorder, they are often ignored. So, Richey says, you need me to be a teenage girl? I can do that. 
(Note that in 1994, when this song was written, any eating disorder demographic outside the “white girl who loves fashion too much” model did not exist by medical standards and was usually subject to ridicule.)

Embodying the anorexic female stereotype allows Richey to criticize both the world and himself; by creating a parody of a young girl with an eating disorder, he creates commentary on how ridiculous and counter-intuitive her thought process actually is. The song is brutal and often focuses on nudity and sexual imagery, as it has been suggested in studies that eating disorders occur in those who are trying to annihilate their own puberty. Though Richey was well into his 20s when he wrote this, he often expressed a loathing of aging and the entire concept of adulthood.
Stomach collapsed at five Lift up my skirt my sex is gone Naked and lovely and 5 stone 2 May I bud and never flower My vision’s getting blurred But I can see my ribs and I feel fine My hands are trembling stalks And I can feel my breasts are sinking
Ultimately, “4st 7lb” hits hard as both an experiment in identity and a vicious satire of the rich white girl eating disorder cliché. Although the lyrics do not express a desire to become female, they do indicate that Richey feels everything might be easier and fit more neatly into a box if he were a girl.

Chapter 3: How Are your feelings
We’ve got a new ship, which appears to have sails for some reason, and it’s either rocketing forward with determination, or crashing. Presumably, this is the ship containing the Meatworld Crew, who set out to rescue Rose from Dirk’s mind control. God, this plot is so complicated.

Oh boy, the narration text is in the first person. It’s also lowercase, so one presumes this is Calliope, in Jade’s body? I thought Calliope was trying to maintain the role of invisible narrator, though, and she’s calling attention to herself more obviously than any of the other narrators.

Heh. This art is really nice. Jade’s speaking in Calliope’s red text, so she is indeed possessed by Calliope. Poor Jade. Homestuck proper is 8,192 pages. The epilogue is 100,000 words, and we’re 100 pages into Homestuck 2. Jade has been stuck on a boat, possessed, unconscious, dead,possessed again, or otherwise out of the story since Cascade, all the way back on page 4,109. No wonder she became a hedonist. Of course, who’s fault is it that Jade missed the final battle.

I always read this as foreshadowing that Jade would get a big moment, and it never happened. Hopefully someone on the writing team remembers that Jade is supposed to roar to life and show everyone who’s the real master. But for now, alas, the real master is Calliope, hypocritically fighting for the free will of all by taking Jade out of the story again. Anyway, that was a long tangent and a lot of search (give me back the .txt file of the whole comic, Viz!) back to Homestuck 2.

Calliope is powerful enough to escape Candyland because she ate Lord English, and Lord English is partially comprised of Dirk, so there’s quite literally a little bit of Dirk inside Calliope right now. That’s maybe something to keep in the back of our minds, but now I’m theorycrafting.

I love how Kanaya the Fashion Troll is basically the only character in the entire franchise to go “Fuck I haven’t been onscreen in over ten years I should change my look”. The big bow is Rose’s from way back when her and Kanaya first met, which is a cute nod.

Okay, so that’s 7 years between the end of Homestuck 1 and the Homestuck Epilogues. Dirk’s been on his boat for three years, but we’re with the Meat Crew at the start of their journey, (which means Roxy only recently came out as trans, which I guess makes it less weird that Dave is still processing it).
But god, this is a lot of timelines to keep track of. I guess it’s fun in a way, being intensely convoluted was part of the fun of trying to piece together Homestuck 1′s plot, but I think I’m this close to busting out a white board where and how old everyone is actually fuck it

This seems metatextual, in that the characters are more complete when they have like a goal and stuff. Or it might be the Homestuck 2 writers taking a subtle jab at the Epilogue writers, that everyone’s better off having left the epilogues behind and moving on to Homestuck 2. That might be reading too much into it.

Heh. Also: Huh? Karkat is making a lot of assumptions here, given that Terezi, Sollux, and Aradia are all alive, he never saw Gamzee die, and Vriska dying just made her more powerful.
And that’s the update! I like these character interactions, even though they’re mostly just sitting around and naval-gazing like in Act 6 and the epilogues, because at least it’s got some jokes it feels like it’s all going somewhere. And starting next month, it’s going to be going there twice as fast

Okay so I looked into tracking this down and my sources might be a little fuzzy, but this is something that’s been pissing me off.
So about three years ago on Pottermore, JK Rowling released a piece about illness and disability in the wizarding world. Unfortunately, she used this piece to basically say that wizards are “above” muggle disabilities and could cure anything they want (so long as those disabilities aren’t caused by magic. Which I suppose would imply that Harry’s bad eyesight is caused by his near-death experience as a baby or by being a horcrux, but I’m getting ahead of myself).
So why is this problematic? In a fictional world where wizards are presented as the norm and muggles are seen as a subspecies that are too unintelligent to even be able to interact with wizards, it implies that real world disabilities are only for simple people. Read: subhuman or not advanced enough to cure their own ailments.
I get that she tried to worm her way around this by including magical illnesses and disabilities, in characters like Moody and Lupin. But it just falls flat? Like she’s trying to cover her tracks with something like “oh well this character is too ~advanced~ to have lost his leg and eye to something as common as cancer or diabetes or anemia, that just wouldn’t be realistic. He was cursed in a fight and lost them.”
And boy howdy, since I’ve mentioned Lupin, let’s take something straight from the horse’s mouth. (source: Pottermore)

Yeah. Let that sink in. She wanted to have a character whose condition was a metaphor for AIDS, so she made him a literal monster? Who has to rely on the worst character in the series, a brooding abusive human fedora, to make sure he doesn’t kill people at random? Yeah, that’s the great representation that people with AIDS needed in the 90′s. /s
(that last bit may be worded harshly. My intention is not to insult or offend you, rather, just to show my general distaste for her.)

(You can see by comparing the open tabs between the above screenshots that I really haven’t bothered to edit or cut anything down.) This is a page of her twitter likes, and we can see not terribly far down this article. Which I unfortunately took the time to read.
It’s an article about former VICE reporter Sam Kriss, and the sexual assault allegations that have come up about him in the last few months. So far so good, no matter how much of a vocal feminist someone is, we should be able to call them out when they fuck up, right?
Except the article doesn’t do that. It takes all this information about men who have committed sexual assault, mostly Sam Kriss and Harvey Weinstein, and immediately backpedals. The second half of the article is basically “I know these cishet men are violent sexual predators, but we can’t blame them for that. Blaming cishet men for their own actions isn’t going to address our real problem, which is... trans women!”
Yeah. You read me right. JK Rowling openly liked an article about how we can’t blame actual men for their crimes, but we have to pin it on trans women who are just trying to use a g-ddamn bathroom. And this isn’t the only instance of her transphobia either:

Look, I get it. Choosing a character’s gender can be difficult (especially when you believe in strict gender roles and still think there are only two genders). But did she have to involve a crack at the character’s genitalia? Especially when you consider how much she writes about underage characters? JFC that’s horrifying in context. But it gets worse...

There’s two major things wrong with this image. We’ll take them in reverse chronological order. First, let’s look at her sarcastic reply to the second writer: “Tell me about it, sister. I mean brother. No sister.” Hahaha, because purposefully misgendering others is the height of comedy, am I right(wing)? Second, because this one is actually the worst thing I’ve seen all day, look at the first writer she’s replying to, Dan Hodges. Notice anything interesting about his name?
That’s an echo. For those unfamiliar, the (((echo))) began as a way for anti-Semites to point out what people or ideas in a list were Jewish. It’s not like a star of David, which began as a sacred symbol, was turned into a hate symbol, and then reclaimed; this was explicitly created as a way to single out Jewish people and target them. The echo is most common on twitter, where anti-Semites will put an ironic echo around their own names to show that they are either not Jewish or are opposed to their ideals. Putting an echo around your name is about one step above putting “14/88”, “blood and soil”, or “(insert predominantly white country, usually America) first” in your bio. It’s sick and horrifying and the fact that JK is just sitting down having a pleasant chat with him proves that she doesn’t care.
In summary JK Rowling is ableist, transphobic, antisemitic, and the peak of white feminism.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN SYNC
Is there a downside to ramen profitability? But there are limits to how well you understand the problem you're solving for them.1 But the real problem for Microsoft wasn't the embarrassment of the people they never got. Having to hit a growth number every week forces founders to act, and acting versus not acting is the high bit of succeeding. If you'd proposed at the time and then it can take years to figure out what it's doing. If investors had sufficient vision to run the companies they fund, why didn't they start them? If it keeps expanding, it might expand into the acquirer's own territory. Whatever the outcome, the conflict between the manager's schedule and the maker's schedule, though. The last one might be the most common. Technology companies made money by trade, and water was the only economical way to ship.2 Who will win, the super-angels. Reading Period, when students have no classes to attend because they're supposed to be bound by some plan you made early on.
But it does share something with the one that's profitable in the traditional appointment book, with each day cut into one hour intervals. They have little discipline.3 Rtm and Trevor and I do because we always have, and Jessica does too, mostly, because she's gotten into sync with us. Or it could be a problem. But unlike most people they had the confidence to notice it. Super-angels compete with both angels and VCs was a very inconvenient one for startups, because they're untainted by experience.4 Use difficulty as a guide not just in some metaphorical way.5
Who is? Because I didn't realize the answer till later, after I went to work at Yahoo.6 Artix was like a game. Only a tiny fraction are startups.7 Stay upwind. I wish I'd grasped that in high school: what you want. So don't get too attached to your original plan, because it's their work that yours is going to be Make something people want. Facebook made a point of encouraging the most outrageous thoughts I can imagine what I'd tell them about startups if they were a race apart.9
One wrote: While I did enjoy developing for the iPhone, the control they place on the App Store: a software publisher. They're happy to buy only a few thousand, but those few thousand users wanted it a lot. Until you have some users to measure, you're optimizing based on guesses. But in their time, they had to work very hard to make themselves heard by users, because those are the only real cost is the founders' living expenses. In the other languages I had learned up till then, there was a type of programmer who would only put five or ten minutes rearranging it to look interesting. But in technology, you cook one thing and that's what you do. Fortunately there is a trick you could use it.10 You have to make the same decision: as hard as you possibly can. If in each new idea you're able to re-use most of what you want. But what if your manager was hit by a bus? It was obvious to us as programmers that these sites would have to pay close attention to their books. Sometimes the changes are advances, and what would make it faster, you almost always do get it.
But Android is an orphan; Google doesn't really care about it, if it is true, is another question.11 Representational art is only now recovering from the approval of both Hitler and Stalin. It's also obvious to programmers that wealth is something that's made, rather than being influenced by what he wishes were the case.12 A bear can absorb a hit and a crab is armored against one, but I have never had to use CLOS.13 To some degree, it offers a way around these limitations.14 I know the afternoon is going to be bloated and full of duplication anyway. And you'll do it best if you introduce the ulterior motive toward the end of my working day, and I am self-indulgent.15 But any idea that's considered harmless in a significant percentage of times and places, and so on. Movie studios?16 But a very able person in a big company, then a smart hacker working very hard without any corporate bullshit to slow him down should be able to resist, or at least language implementors, like to write compilers that generate fast code. This is a different form of profitability than startups have traditionally aimed for. You don't see faces much happier than people winning gold medals.17 I should use Holland as an example of a startup seems like a fraud. An organization that wins by exercising power starts to lose the ability to win by doing good work. For startups, growth is a constraint much like truth. What sort of company might cause people in the future will find ridiculous.18 I wasn't working at my day job I'd start trying to make Web sites for galleries—that's the ticket!
It's equivalent to asking how to make money. So VCs who invest in them. The defining quality of Silicon Valley is not that you're 30 times as productive, and get in trouble for seem harmless now. But neither should you let them run the company. You should get another multiple of two, at least in our own time.19 Just keep playing. What this meant in practice was that we deliberately sought hard problems.20 Some may even deliberately stall, because they were built one building at a time. Or more precisely, the effect of subroutines in the inherently stateless world of a Web session. I did be satisfied by merely doing well in school.

*Always loved the intros for Siskel & Ebert. I'm more familiar w/ the one from my childhood where they meet out in front of the theater looking grumpy while buying newspapers & paying the cabbie. This one is from close to a decade earlier & they're much more cheery fellows as they go about a quirky routine of getting their movie concession snacks.
*Sheena, Queen of the Jungle: Roger thinks that Sheena isn't even a good bad movie w/ inappropriate music for the action scenes "sounds like it belongs in a honeymoon video" & Tanya Roberts not being sexy enough. I like that Roger is thinking like Joe Bob. Yeah, doesn't look great to me. Yep, 80s & before were about the only time a blonde white chick could be seriously considered a jungle queen.* looks like folly
*Rhinestone: Siskel isn't fond of hearing Sylvester Stallone sing bad country music in a popular, at the time, urban cowboy genre disaster. I wouldn't either. Dolly Parton is his co-star & it looks like they had zero chemistry. Could have been the awful dialogue. More weird is that Stallone seemed to be trying a southern accent... ugh...* 1 star

Family Matters was the Breaking Bad of its era. Boy Meets World never appealed to me. Step By Step was okay. I remember most about it having the guy from the Kickboxer sequel. Hangin' With Mr. Cooper is lame when you think back on it, but it worked for the time. A "cool" middle school or junior high teacher who was down w/ the kids & played basketball. However, nothing about this particular promo is spooky or creepy enough. The 80s would have tried harder w/ the scary theme than the 90s seemed to.* 2 stars

In the 80s, during the era of dull parents & dingy colors on everything including off white & putrid yellow fridges, microwaves, washers & dryers, & dishwashers. Some were even the same green color of The Creature from the Black Lagoon's bowel movements. If I were "The Phantom" I wouldn't dwell at Highland Superstores. “Is it good to be satisfied?” - An Interview With Kellermensch
There are not many bands I’ve missed as much as Kellermensch in the last couple of years. They released their s/t debut in 2011, disappeared for a few years and now returned with their amazing second album “Goliath”. It was about time. Seeing them on stage the day after our interview was one of my most favourite moments of 2017, the same intensity I loved back in days. One that I’ve never found in any other band. 
Six years ago singer, guitarist Sebastian Wolff, guitarist Jan V. Laursen and I sat down in a cold, grey conference room of Universal Music, this time I spoke to Sebastian, John V. Laursen (upright bass, guitar) and I enjoyed a very interesting conversation (as always) over some coffee and cake at my favourite coffee place in Berlin, the Ramones Museum. The rest of the band, Jan, Claudio W. Suez (bass), Anders Trans (drums), Christian Sindermann (vocals, organ) and more, waited around until Sebastian played a very special “acoustic” gig. The difference between the interview places is also a little symbol for the many changes the band went through in the last couple of years. Only one thing remained: a certain amount of hopelessness at the beginning. But read yourself.

Dörte: Are you David?
Sebastian Wolff: In a way, I guess. The title “Goliath” was something I suggested early on.
John V. Laurens: It gave more sense later on.
S: The further we got in the process of making this album, which was very difficult, the title became  more and more fitting. I think in the end it felt like the album is the rock we throw against Goliath. In a way the band is David and the making this album felt like facing a giant. It was an uphill battle.
It's also what it sounds like. When I looked at the lyrics the title could have been found at the end of the process as well. It's always a bit like a small person fighting for love, for being accepted the way he is and so on.
S: I think that's true. It might be surprising it was suggested early on and it became so filling. A lot of the lyrics involve a struggle somehow to get love or recognition or just to get by. That's what the album is about: the feeling of being underappreciated.
J: This struggle has always been a theme in our inspirational sources. We looked at different bands, even in Rock and in Metal it's a theme. We love bands like Rage Against The Machine, even the band name displays the same struggle, defying the giants. It felt good and right.
S: I think also it was the literature that we read. When we started the band we wanted...
The album still fits your band name.
S: We wanted to be able to write about every day stuff and still do it a way that is dramatic and intense. I think we succeded on this album with writing about every day stuff. We're not writing about revolution or war or any political stuff. Some of our heros, including Dostojewstij who wrote the book “Notes From The Unterground”, do this excellantly. They write about how they see the world and their lives.

I felt this album is unlike the first album closer to me in a way that it's simpler written.
S: I'm glad that you say that because when we started working on this album we had very few hopes or goals that we wanted to archive. One of them was to write songs with a clear character who appears in the songs. If we can do it that way we can have a character like in the movies or in a book. That was one of the things we wanted on this album: To have a clearer character that the audience can relate to. We speand a lot of time on the lyrics and on the athmosphere of the songs.
When we looked at our debut album it happened sometimes by chance. When we started writing the lyrics for this album I had to remind myself and Christian and Anders and whoever helped writing the lyrics that we needed to play with open hands. Sometimes when you write movie lyrics with metaphores you can loose the audience but they can still feel the athmosphere but they don't really know what they're singing about. We wanted to avoid that and make sure that we play with open cards and people know what we're singing about. So, I'm happy that it translates to the audience.
I remember when you wrote the first album you said that the band was like a hopeless project in the beginning and everything was really hopeless because you're so different and then there were years of nothing where I checked you Facebook and stuff and I thought you gave up without telling anyone. And now your back and being rather big in Denmark.
J: Yes, it's also a good thing to be a bit different from all the others. Now we're maybe the dark horse that the festivals can take in. That fits our role pretty good and it feels comfortable.
S: I think the process of writing this album was so difficult that I remember thinking that we need to reach the point where everything is hopeless because maybe that's where we feel most productive. And then start to rebuild it. We definitely hit that level of hopelessness writing this album. But then releasing it in Denmark was surprising because there was a lot of positive feedback. People were really happy to hear the album. And then again now is the first time – we never really fit in – but now in Denmark Rock is so out of fashion that we look around and wonder where all the other rockbands are. We've been away for 5 years and now they're all gone. It's really strange. Here in Germany there are a lot of Rock bands around. We did an interview in Copenhagen and he asked 'What is it like returning after all these years?' And I told the story when we went to England to do a showcase in 2010 and a journalist who saw us compared us to the band playing on the Titanic. Coming back after 5 years with a new album feels like being that band. All the other rockbands are leaving the boat trying to get off.
You've never been in a certain genre. I never really considered you a rock band, I always thought of you as a band.
J: Many of the reviews from Germany are from Metal sites. They include us there but it's out of our hands really. Some think it's Indie. There's growling, there's rock music, there's comtemporary, there are classical instruments.
S: I think we never tried to think about genres. I think part of the success it due to the fact that there is no competition with bands that are playing distortion guitars and real drums anymore. A lot of Danish bands are electrionic which is cool and it also leaves more room for us.
What I found funny listening to this album is that the further you listen the more growling is happening until “Moth” where it's almost nothing else. It's like a theater play.
J: It's quite systematical for many of the songs. There is a huge force in having Christian growling, especially in the end parts it's a climax. It makes it more dramatic.
S: I think it's true that on the debut album each song had it's curve but on the new album it's the whole album.
Was it something you planned when you wrote the album?
S: No. I remember I spoke to Christian about it and we suggested that we take that approach. We had the songs ready and thought about how can we fit them together. What if it becomes more and more dramatic? Maybe have an exit where we drive off the cliff and then there is only the closer which sounds like everything has been falling apart now.
J: I remember talking to Michael who had another take on it. He asked some guys how to do it when you put it on vinyl. It's a bit of a different story what is first, what is second and when you flip it to the b-side it supposed to be something powerful as well. He had some technical thoughts about how to do it.
S: It made sense. There was on thing that was deliberate from the beginning: We wanted the songwriting to be in the focus when we worked. On the debut album we were all in the room so we all play on every song. We wanted to challenge that and let the song dictate who plays. We did that intensely that when our guitarist Jan wrote the chords for the first song “Bad Sign” we arranged it so uncompromisingly that we removed his guitar. There is no guitar on it although it was his song. We wanted the song to have the perfect arrangement regardless of the band.
Especially because it is so inviting when you're such a big band to use everything you have every time.
S: That was an approach we had from the beginning which let to a lot of the songs like “The Pain of Salvation”, “Bad Sign” and “Atheist in a Foxhole” not having growls on them but it wasn't a deliberate intend to have less growl. I remember we spend months trying to work out songs that were heavier and “Moth” was actually a song that took quite a bit of work. We really wanted this album to have this edge and I think I would have liked to have more with the time we had and the inspiration we had....
You mean the six years?
J[joking]: Great. We needed more time...[we all laugh]
S: The way that the songs don't have every bandmember on it that was deliberate from the beginning but the have this curve something that was just like playing Tetris when we did the track list.
J: We're still refining songs. We have a new sound engineer who is really talented and who has an a approach of the live feel. Sometimes he asks if we would like to change small parts like less gain on the guitar or something like that, so the track would fit better live.
Also, it often looks odd when someone leaves he stage because he has nothing to do. I know bands who do that quite well like Archive. They can be just four on stage or six, seven people. It always changes.
S: I remember the first time I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Copenhagen. There were like 14/15 people on stage. It blew my mind. I think there were two or three piano players and when they had nothing to do they just sat around smoking cigarettes. That was very cool.
J: It's a funny thing - this activity to be on stage. Kellermensch played three or four shows before I joined the band but I know that you [looking at Sebastian] switched instruments a few times. Sebastian would play organ or something. He switched places. Some bands can do it. I know Arcade Fire does it all the time. It didn't work out for us. That's why we made a new constellation.
S: I have no time on stage to do anything. Last night we played in Hamburg and we had a band called Paul opening. Somebody turned my setlist upside down while the first band was playing. Then we went onstage and I never had time to flip the page around because I'm so busy trying to tune guitars, change guitars...so if I had to change instrument it would be too much.

I'm really looking forard to see you again because you're one of the most intense live bands I've ever seen. I remember the last gig I've seen from you quite vividly. I don't know many bands that are like you, perform like you.
S: I'm actually very happy that you say that. I remember when we started playing I think we often played when nothing really worked. The sound was shitty, there was always this feeling...
The sound can be shitty but the thing what it depends on is you and your presents on stage and that's amazing.
S: We didn't have a way of doing it that was controlled. It's still not controlled but now we feel we get to where we want to go. I think it always felt like we do something differently. I remember in the beginning when we got off stage there was never any 'oh, I didn't play that fill the way I wanted to', it was always like 'it wasn't interesting'. The question we always had was: Is this interesting? That's what we always chased. Later we had a bit more time to think. Now we try to say 'Ok, we're doing the chaos, can we do something to make sound a bit better?'
J: We also have time to see the audience and how they react and correspondent to reactions from the stage. And now we can think how can we do it differently.
S: In the beginning it was just chaos. Nobody really know what is happening.
J: We only knew it was a good night when Sebastian had a bloody hand or something like that. Then it was a good night.
One thing that is very close to me are the being heartbroken angry songs on the album. Were you so heartbroken angry or did you just know so many people who were?
S: I was heartbroken angry. I actually went through a break up during the process of making the album. In order to write the lyrics you search for something that works and sometimes you don't really have a rulebook or instructions. You just have to fumble around in the darkness to stumble upon something. I think “Bad Sign” was the first lyric that I wrote and I remember thinking that it was surprisingly close to what I was experiencing. Sometimes I wondered if it's this simple to write down something that happened a month ago and then boom, it's interesting reading. It was an ambition for the album to make it personal but I was actually surprised how personal you to have write to make it personal. You have to go very close to something you have experienced to achive that.
Do you still relive the situation you wrote about nowadays or is it too far away now?
S: It's very surprising. I still remember the first time I was heartbroken like it was yesterday. For a songwriter women become this assembly of all the women you have met, all the women you know. Sometimes it becomes very personal. It's not really pointing at something specific but it's still connected somehow.
J: I don't know if you thought about it in the process of making songs but a few days ago I read a passage that Bruce Springsteen wrote about writing an album - being specific or being not too specific – it still has to be a story that everyone can relate to. It can't be too specific. It also has to be something people can relate to and think that could easily be my life. There is room for the story to unfold to the audience so they can relate to it.
Even with a song like “Mediocre Man” I can relate to it although I'm a woman and it's funny since it's a different gender.
J: It's not the sex or the identity that it's about.
S:  I get the feeling that it can be surprising.
A lot of songs are using “you” and “I”, there is not gender in there and then you have something that is specificly man related it's sometimes funny when you feel it reflects yourself as a woman.
S: But it's funny about the songs being personal. I remember writing “Bad Sign” and thinking sometimes you write better when you know what the song is going to be about but sometimes you don't. At some point I thought this song is defintely about a break up but it's also about getting older, being ready for settling down and then having that being ripped apart. Realising that you're not in control of your life. These things happen. I thought the good sentence in this song is the last one “Funny thing about freedom is once you look for it/ Inside of a cage is where you're gonna find it” but when we released the song the one sentence where everyone told me “that get's me” is one of the first verses “As I walk past your window and I didn't peek”. That one was pretty personal because she lived - the woman I broke up with is now my wife and we have three kids – on a second story apartment. I always passed her appartment on the way to the studio. It was very close to me and an experience I had. That's just something you write. That was the one sentence that most people were like 'That gets me' or 'I've experienced that'. That's very funny. Sometimes the portion of a lyric that you think that's the good one sometimes isn't.  What I can learn from that is: Sometimes going closer and more personal connects more with an audience than being clever or well worded.
And then you can be funny, mentioning yourself in a song. In the context were you mentioned it it's again a very hopeless situation. I really had to laugh when I realized the lyrics the first time, especially considering our first interview.
S: Something that might have completely drowned or not translated to the audience is another goal we had was to introduce a slight bit of humour. But I think when we release the album no one was laughing. A lot of people said to me that listening to the album hurts and it's painful to listen to. “Carring my Name” was a funny little song we had to... [we laugh]
J: It has kind of dance to it...
At least I found one bit of humour. I think your music is always heavy on the feelings for me and finding a bit of humour in there is funny.
S: But that was also something we wanted to do because I always think when you just have minor chords and sadness all the way through you need a breathing hole.
J: A lot of the tunes have these sad verses and choruses and then there are these parts which are kind of uplifting or getting on. Positive things, not only the dark side.

J: Full of despair.
...it's also angry but also anger management after a broke up. It's like saying you're missing out not having me. That's what half of the album is telling me.
S: It's very funny because this feeling of being underappeciated... one of the good things about being a songwriter is that it's therapeutic that you can exorcise your demons. One of the big fears in life is not having your loved returned, so that's a great inspiration for me. It's a good metaphor for feeling like an underdog. I remember seeing an interview with Woody Allen. He said that he basically archived all of his dreams. He made all the movies he wanted to do, he wrote all the books that he anted to write and he played concerts in all of the great concert halls but then he finished the sentence with 'Why do I still feel like I got screwed?' It says something about that it maybe is not the life that you live, maybe it's the mindset, that if you have a hungry personality and a soul that wants a lot of things then you will sometimes feel that way.
You never reach the point of being 100% satisfied, maybe 98% on good days...
S: But the you focus on the two missing percent, feeling screwed. There is something beautiful about that in the sense of  'what do you do when you reached the end?' It's the end then.
J: Is it good to be satisfied?
S: The discribtion you see in a cartoon of heaven for cats where milk flows like water and the mice a slow. That's hell. A cat can't be a cat. It's all over. I think in a way it's healthy to be at least a little bit angry and frustrated because it shows that you're still hungry and alive. That was deep. [we laugh.]
Will it get any better than this?
J: Wait 8 years for our third album.
No, you're not allowed to another six years for the next album.
S: I think we're very happy being where we are right now. We are actually recording new songs already and we basically had the time to hit rock bottom and then say let's get back to the things that are important. Now we focus a lot more on having fun being in a band. With the first album we got to a point were everything was stragegic, everything was 'what are gonna do?'. Working with major labels were everything was a strategy. Now we just focus on leaving out the noise and do the things we want to do and play the shows, tours and festivals we want to and videos that we want to do but always try to remember 'what is the artistic point in doing it?'. Don't just do a video to promote the song, do a video to do something with it. The same with the shows. Don't just go and play a hundert shows just to play a hundert shows. You have to have the room to breath to do something with every show.
J: Last night we played Molotow and it was really great playing a sort of smaller venue. It had some limitations on stage in space and sound but it made it all very real and more dramatic and explosive. It was quite nice to get on the ground again.
I'm looking forward to see you tomorrow at the Musik & Frieden. I'm quite curious how you'll fit the stage there if you already didn't fit on the one from Lido.
J: Sebastian actually stood on the floor in many German venues.
S: We did that last night spontaneously. We started out with me on the stage and all of a sudden Claudio was pushing everything. He knocked over the upright bass and it fell down. I thought I had to go down on the floor. But I like these shows. There was no lightning guy so the light was just constantly on. It's been a while since we played these kind of shows but I like to do it. I think that's one of the first obstacles that you have to break through when you're in a band. The first one is going into a room, nobody knows you, nobody cares, the lights are ugly and the sound is shit and then then you still have to do something to get the audience attention. Sometimes being away from that a couple of years might make you less able to do it. We doing it again now and it's fun. You have to take the room and shake it.
J: Fight for it.
I remember you like having obstacles.
S: Yes, definitely. We want to know where the limit is and then balance on that limit. Sometimes we fall over and the show is shit and everything is chaos but sometimes you can balance. It's still sounding pretty good and being interesting and then balance there. Those are the best shows.
J: Sometimes it's the small things that make it a bit more interesting for people. Yesterday when Sebastian went on the floor he accidently hit the mic stand and it flipped 360° and it landed on the floor and two guys in the front just dropped their jaw and were kind laughing. It was landing perfectly. They laughed and shoke hands and were like 'that's cool'. It's the small things that can makes something rememberable.
I remember you're having a thing going on with microphone stands being broken...
S: Doing different things also helps to do something new. We played in a big music hall, room made for classic music, so everyone sits down. We had to play only 30 minutes because it was a festival and I just remember it was surprisingly easy. The room had about 1800 seats. We went on and only 30 minutes, so we just wanted to get started and played all the fast songs and the heavy songs in a row. People were 'woah'. We just had to get onstage and say boo. When we played Roskilde Festival on the Arena stage where 1500 fit in it was really difficult. You go boo and everybody is like 'did someone say something?'.
J: Silence.
S: You just can't attack the room because it's so big. You have to think and put a lot of effort into the setlist to activate a room that size.
J: Even the phsical distance is a problem. There is quite a lot of space between the audience and the stage. We tried the opposite also. We played a 360° stage. There were people all around you. That was fun. Guitars were dropping off stage and people helping putting them back up on stage. It was kind of interacting.
It's good especially considering how much stuff gets stolen these days.
S: After I played one or two shows my guitars are worthless anyway.
J: Damaged goods.

“Factory Girl”
Published: March 19, 2016 http://mcstories.com/FactoryGirl/index.html And now, the best story in the whole series. I love it so much. It has theme and symbolism! In a freaking erotica short! Also it is head and shoulders the warmest and fuzziest Girls(tm) story, and introduces a little more worldbuilding, not least by using an actual Girl as its viewpoint character, which is a neat and unique touch. I really like it. This is also, weirdly enough, the only direct sequel in the whole run so far - it takes place about two weeks after Girls Girls Girls and follows Rory Lake, a super-minor character from that story. (This was almost certainly planned from the beginning, though; Patricia loses track of Rory in that story in a very causal way that I barely even noticed the first time through, but in retrospect is very much deliberate setup on @jukeboxemcsa​‘s part.) She’s been hiding in the Girls’ factory for two weeks, without being noticed even once until the story starts, and whereas eg Adele from Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend is forewarned and makes it like thirty seconds before turning into a sex-crazed slave, Rory has been alert and safe for that whole time and even has an effective if last-ditch First-Law-based emergency escape plan.  Rory is a tremendous fucking badass, is my point. Five Thirty Three is also pretty badass, albeit in a “going above and beyond your programming” way rather than a “suck it, Three Days of the Condor, I am the greatest and toughest investigative reporter now” way. Rory is trans, and Five Thirty Three is... I dunno what the correct term for her is (she’s a non-biological robot, to start with). But the symbolism is pretty straightforward. Five Thirty Three realizes that who she wants and needs to be and who she’s “supposed” be be are different, alters herself to be what she is happy with and fulfilled by, and tells societal expectation (as represented by some QA Girls) to go pound sand. Not exactly a tremendously subtle metaphor, but it’s good. (The QA Girls are a lot more insensitive to Five Thirty Three than they presumably would be to a human trans person - to Rory, for instance - but they, too, get the point by the end of the story.) Jukebox mentioned on his blog (https://jukeboxemcsa.wordpress.com/2016/04/02/liner-notes-for-march-2016/) that he expected the high point of the story would be the climax, where, as mentioned, Five Thirty Three tells Society to fuck off, and it is indeed pretty good; but that the actual most positive response from trans readers was for the part where Five Thirty Three finds out that Rory is trans and doesn’t give a fuck for even an instant. Which is pretty great. :) I’m not trans, so it’s a little silly and #actually of me to talk about the part I found the most uplifting, but eh. My favourite part is right about the middle, where Five Thirty Three is briefly overcome by self-doubt but decides that Rory is too important to let her own feelings of inadequacy stop her from doing what’s right. (I have an anxiety disorder myself, so that’s probably part of the reason I like that so much - people getting over their own fears, especially intrusive, damaging fears, are a definite thing I love, in erotica or elsewhere.) If there’s any weak points in this at all, and it pains me deeply to look for them, it’s that Rory is kinda a non-character here; nobody’s at their best when they’re being brainwashed, and that’s why the all the other stories stop literally before anyone wakes up again for the first time. This one goes on for quite a while after (since it really is Five Thirty Three’s story*, not Rory’s). I get that Five Thirty Three can probably plot their escape better than Rory can (I suspect by the time of the story, Rory has all the evidence she wants or needs and the limiting factor is her inability to find a way to get back to Earth). I get that Rory is probably tranced up pretty hardcore through the entire second half of the story. And I get that Girl-human relationships, while loving and validating and pretty much every other good thing, are not particularly egalitarian. So there’s pretty much no way Rory and Five Thirty Three could plan together or have Rory be more than an bystander in the climax. And, again, it’s Five Thirty Three’s story. ...But I still think it would be better if Rory could somehow get a little more to do.
Whatever. It’s a great fucking story, and I hope and expect Rory and Five Thirty Three have a great future in store for them. At the very least Rory is going to become an even scarier investigative reporter than she already was. And she definitely has the coolest (and most interesting) Girl on Earth. ;) *I just realized - the regular purchased Girls are pretty cheerful about getting nicknamed, yet nobody ever does at any point in the series. The only “named” Girl at all is Five Thirty Three, who has a serial number, which Rory never learns. The Girls (except, significantly, Five Thirty Three) are pretty interchangeable, but I’m curious how well this actually works amongst the long-term dependent population.
