Fionna and Cake theory: Simon the Artist

Nothing like a good old creative panic attack.

Fionna and Cake good. Haven’t been excited about a show like this in a long time, though it being a part of Adventure Time does help quite a bit. I was holding on to some cautious optimism for the show when it was announced as yet another big IP series covering the multiverse (still waiting to groan at THAT scene where Prismo has to explain to us about there being infinite universes), but as usual, Adventure Time’s crew continues to surprise me with its creativity, humor, and thematic resonance.

The most striking part about Fionna and Cake so far is just how deliberately the show wants us to differentiate it from the original Adventure Time.

We’re getting shots where Simon pops an artery from his arm, a theme song that explicitly talks about suicidal ideation, discussions of rent and financial problems, and curses no longer disguised with AT’s usual dialogue. Adventure Time has always had violence, thematic density, and juvenile rating pushers, but they were always reserved at small points. Meanwhile, these are factors that are just casually shown and discussed in Fionna and Cake every 3 minutes or so. This is not an all-ages miniseries, it’s for young adults. (hint: this will be relevant later)

Let’s get right into it. This is much less a speculative lore theory and more on what thematic direction the story may be going.

Before we do, let’s get this out of the way first. This theory assumes that the current Fionna and Cake world is all a part of Simon’s head and not merely a separate multiverse, which… I’m certain is fact for the following reasons.

The immediately obvious piece is that Fionna and Cake was always the Ice King’s fanfiction. Now if you’re versed in AT’s continuity you’re probably going to be asking about the red light in Fionna and Cake + Fionna and… I’ve no answer for it unfortunately. It’ll probably be relevant later in the series and possibly age this post like milk but for now, we’re not here to focus on the how, but the why.

Second is that the intro and the ending of Ep 2 literally show Fionna’s world spilling right out of Simon’s head like an animated world out of a frozen brain. If that isn’t clear enough-

There’s no other explanation for this other than that this world is artificial or influenced by Simon in some sense. Fionna even specifies that the statue went under renovation 12 years ago, but nobody seems to know who it is. Considering how Finn looks in the episode, it’s likely that it’s been that long since Betty’s sacrifice in the finale.

With that out of the way, here it goes.

The reason Fionna and Cake exist in the first place is because the creators found Natasha Allegri’s genderswap designs charming and wanted an in-universe reason to use them the Ice King wanted to create trashy, wish fulfillment through art. It was a phase.

Definitely changed that image for publishing.

Simon can argue if they’re good or bad but it’s undeniably his art. It’s not just a portfolio he left behind in a closet, it’s an experience that was shared with a larger audience.

And even if wasn’t liked at first, the citizens of Ooo seemed to have come around to it. And some of them love it!

Whether Simon likes it or not, he has a fan base that is so endeared to the story he made all those years ago that they demand he makes more. Why let a good story, loved by many, go to rest when you still have some life and creativity left in you?

Can't move on in more ways than one.

Except, the problem is that Simon isn’t Ice King anymore. He’s aged out of it.

His real passion is history, he's an adult who who finds passion in the mundane and antiques from the past. And frankly, there isn’t much room for wish-fulfillment and fantasy anymore. Simon has responsibilities. He has a job and a daughter in a world that is moving faster than he can process.

And where Ice King wrote about looking for love, Simon has already had it.

And lost it. His mind isn’t focused on the rosiness of finding new love, it’s grieving the one he already thought was the one.

Wasn't he supposed to be good with kids?

Despite his new life experiences, all his peers seem to want from him is to make more of what they’re familiar with.

A story made from wants and wishes that he doesn’t even have anymore.

A story that was literally made by someone else at a different time. It’s a fiction he cannot connect to anymore, art that he’s embarrassed by. Yet also jealous of. Because at one point, the body Simon used to be in understood what exactly was missing from his life and could express that easily.

Seeing it again is like experiencing a retrospection of a cringey loser you don’t want to imagine having ever been. It’s not you anymore, and you don’t want to be reminded of that.

Because despite him having a new creative passion, no one seems to care about that. All they want is Fionna and Cake. And what is more lonely than other people misunderstanding what you’re trying to express?

If I failed to make it clear somehow, my theory is that: Simon’s relationship with Fionna and Cake is a metaphor for creators growing out of their art. And this new Fionna and Cake world is still comfort art born out of Simon’s current desires and perceptions.

The snippet subtitles this “child holding a phone”. I guess I’m wrong. Essay over.

Episode 1 and 2 both have direct parallels with each other. They’re both about a protagonist who are feeling displaced from their world, living a phase of losing a significant other, leaving a thankless job, wearing a mask of stability in front of the people they care for, seeking a guru at the heart of the forest, and concluding that they no longer belong in their current world.

But more importantly, Fionna and Cake (the characters, the world, and the show) are no longer for an all-ages crowd. Fionna and Cake now feature young adults, curses, gore, alcohol, partial nudity, financial issues, morning routines, mid-life crisis, and overt suicidal ideation. These are the feelings that Simon relates to and possibly desires to express through art. Thus, his story and our new miniseries have warped that way.

Am I overthinking this? No. How dare you assume that.

Is equating the unconscious writings of his dementia-ridden self to Simon as his younger self seem a bit odd? ….Kinda. Again, it’s not the how but the why that matters in this case. I'm NOT crazy, I have proof that there is some acknowledgment of this directly in the show.

Rewatch the bar scene and apply this reading of the episode to what Simon says there:

“Your old stuff, Fionna and Cake, honest to glob my man, is an inspiration to me.”

“My old stuff, I don’t really want to talk about my old stuff…”

“Why not? You should be proud! You wrote an entire extended universe in a fugue state if you think about it.”

"Simon cringes"

If you have ever shared art with a group of people in the past, you’ve had this conversation.

Not likely, not possibly, no perhapses. You HAVE.

And Fionna and Cake being an epilogue to a massive award-winning, near-decade-spanning, cultural sensation 5 years after it ended, might result in its creators feeling very retrospective about what audiences want from them now.

And how difficult it’s going to be to tell new experiences and tones from what’s come before. Also, come on. “Extended Universe?” That doesn’t sound like Fionna and Cake. That sounds a lot like something else.

Again, seems bad with this kid.

One of the more profound shots in the main trailer for the show features the inconspicuously Finn-like kid crouching at her Fionna and Cake book in Simon’s trash. I believe this character is going to have a major role in two ways. Convincing Simon to be proud of what he’s accomplished and/or embracing that Simon wants to move away from his original work in order to create something new, or perhaps more likely, reinvent Fionna and Cake into what Simon relates to now.

We’ll just have to see what Simon thinks of his new Fionna next week.

"Lets got to brd before Raph and Mikey wake up." Leo sat up from the wall, turning away. "Both of them being cranky isn't something I'd like to experience at the moment -" He finished, before walking towards his room.

Kdramas are in such a sorry state lately it's so sad. We're getting all these sequels for shows that mostly weren't supposed to have multiple seasons so they're a mess bc they have no story to tell. They're all dazzle razzle and no actual decent writing (taxi driver, nine tailed fox, romantic doctor etc) and then we have the 500 crime/thriller shows which are mostly deeply mediocre or downright awful. At least with romcoms if the chemistry is good and the character work is decent enough you can have a really fun show. With these dramas most of it hinges on a well written plot at which the majority fail spectacularly. News came out a few weeks ago that there are 80 dramas made that might never air bc they have no platform bc all the big ones cut the wen-thurs slot except jtbc so there are 80 dramas that will most likely rot after so much hard work and these could be great dramas, because their criteria is it will air if it has big names in it, so this is not a quality issue. Netflix really f*cked us, not only did it start the collapse of the us industry( writers are striking, actors are about to strike, shows are getting cancelled after 1/2 seasons and 8 episodes, shows getting purged for a buck, everyone is only looking for IP with big names and no one cares about good ideas or creativity) it also insidiously burrowed into the kdrama industry and changed the genres of dramas we get, the number of episodes we get, even the sequels bc it used to be no matter how huge a shows ratings were, the worst they could do was an extension, sequels weren't a thing that happened except very rarely in prodecurals like ten or vampire prosecutor. The entire thing is a sad state of affairs, another case of tech bros devastating an industry (I'm referring to the US tv/movie industry) they don't understand to line their pockets and moving on to the next one while the wreckage left in their wake will never be salvaged.

anon i absolutely agree. this is such a depressing topic for me especially because i just love cinema so much. my parents raised me to love movies then i eventually fell in love with tv shows and kdramas and it literally kills me to see the downfall of these amazing comforts in my life. i think the main reason why i haven't been here is because i just wasn't feeling like dragging through another kdrama with a medicore plot. y'all know what i was doing instead? watching old movies i've been meaning to watch for a long time or rewatching classics. you hear this every day and you could jump me for it but...they don't make them like they used to anymore. and idc how corny it sounds cause it's fucking true. exluding some very good recent movies where people making it still care about making an enjoyable piece of media (i don't give a fuck what anyone thinks of tom cruise or top gun, maverick was the only new movie in a long time that made me feel like i used to while watching movies and i literally cannot wait for the new mission impossible film). i'm a 100% with the writers strike, i really hope that they can get what they want and we will finally get back at least a fraction of something that was lost along the way. netflix was supposed to make things accessible, not turn the industry upside down and inside out then light it on fire and piss on the flames. every time i read a season 2 announcement of a kdrama i just go UGHHHHHHH. why are we adding seasons to a show that doesn't need it and why are we cancelling seasons for shows that needed to go longer to tell a story? what's the fucking rationale? oh oh OH mONEy???? netflix don't have enough MONEYYYY??? can't pay residuals to writers or renew a show that has moved people and has more story to tell but has money to make a squid game IN REAL LIFE (which is in itself like....the point flew over everyone's heads) and renewing shows NO ONE ASKED FOR?? oh what? what? more and more people are unsubscribing from your service? how could that be.....only if there was a solution to keep your subscribers by offering them quality content instead of mindless cash grabs....

Flash - DCEU Flash is Batman's idiot sidekick

GL - Now this one fascinates me because Johns also is the only one to ever be given the privilege of using Batman to elevate another hero. Both Hal and John get to tell Bats to fuck off, and Hal even gets to punch his lights out. Unfortunately, the Johns interaction between Hal and Bruce that has been immortalized is Bruce swiping Hal's ring with ease. And of course there is the amazingly unhinged interaction between the two in All-Star Batman & Robin.

Aquaman - Oddly nothing comes to mind. Arthur and Bruce rarely interact.

Titans - Any pretense of them being more than sidekicks gets obliterated when Batman enters the room and starts ordering Dick around

chapter summary: Joel finds a way to contact you after your apparent distress in the street. You have your meeting with Marianne and AJ, and then go to update Joel. Joel tells you why he has a vendetta against AJ and Marianne, urging you to be careful. All the while both of your feelings begin to grow while trying to focus on the goal: revenge.

“You fucking bastard.” Joel growled, knife to AJ’s throat. The trickle of blood ran down the side of his neck on Joel's pinky, warm and unsettling.

“Don’t be like that man–”

“You fucking touched her? And then you killed her?” Joel questioned, anger running high as he pushed deeper at his throat.

AJ’s smile shined brightly, and Joel knew it would haunt him in his sleep. “That’s the thrill of being super Miller–we get to do what we please. Fuck whores and kill them.”

When you got back to your apartment and threw yourself onto your bed and cried. Confusion and fear flooded your thoughts, unable to figure out what your next move should be. The idea that Joel was right and had been honest with you after knowing you for so little stirred inside you as your personal phone dinged with a ringtone you had never heard before. It had you stopping in your tracks, lifting your head, and then glancing around before reaching for it at your bedside table.

King’s Circle, 11PM. See you soon sweetie

You sniffled, wiping at your eyes with the back of your hand, and shook your head, tossing the phone back on your nightstand. You could hold out long enough to meet with Joel at King’s Circle. Padding into the bathroom, you looked at yourself in the mirror and huffed, grabbing a washcloth to wipe your face and start fresh. I can do this.

Joel had pulled out his notebook from years before to find a way to message you. Codes, IP addresses, and a few clicks into the Organization database had him celebrating with a shot of whiskey, your personal cellphone number saved into his secure line to send you messages. Not long after Joel sent the message his eyes were glued to the screen again, holding his breath as he waited, to see if you would reappear.

When you did, he let out the air in his lungs, slouching against his chair and watching you fully put together, not a hair out of place and smile back on. You could do this.

You were vibrating in your chair with rage. AJ sat casually beside you, legs crossing away from yours to show that he has disdain for you. No nod, no acknowledgment, nothing. As if he wasn’t just about to force you onto your knees-

“So let’s review what happened Monday night?” Marianne’s light and quick voice sounded through your ears, pulling you out of your thoughts. She motioned to you, looking expectantly into your eyes.

You cleared your throat, adjusting yourself in the chair and pushing your shoulders back. “We arrived on the roof and I believe that everything was going fine. I hadn’t spotted the cameras yet so we were waiting, when AJ just…ran off.” Your sentence died in your throat as you watched from your peripheral that AJ turned his head, rolling his eyes at your statement. You looked down, clearing your throat. “I was shot in the leg by Joel. I was able to talk to him long enough that he just knocked me out and left.”

Marianne watched you, eyes blazing through your skull as if trying to read your mind. That’s not her power, idiot. “I was watching the cameras, and AJ did run off.”

AJ was out of his seat, fury filling his cheeks and he looked between you and Marianne. “I didn’t just run off Mar, it was fucking Joel Miller. I couldn’t stay there–”

“You ran off and left our newest member, your partner, to defend herself against him?” She questioned calmly, tilting her head at him.

“I had to get the cameras away from him!” AJ scoffed, sitting heavily in his chair beside you. “She has the suit that repairs her and you know he was there to kill me.”

Marianne turned back to you, face steady and unwavering. “What did Joel say to you, exactly?”

You paused, thinking about what AJ said to you in the bathroom. She will want every detail and will be able to tell you’re lying– “I argued with him about what he was doing there and then…he asked where AJ went and I said how would I know…and then he knocked me out.”

You held your breath, keeping eye contact with Marianne as she sat in your statement. Her eyes flicked to AJ, who was staring at you and trying to do the same thing–see if you’re lying. Marianne sighed, bringing her hand up to her forehead in frustration. Her hair was pulled back today in a tight ponytail, blonde pieces falling out of place and into her eyes. You wondered briefly if she had lost sleep over this situation, but dismissed it. If it was that big of a deal, this meeting would have been sooner in the week.

She looked up at you and smiled. “I feel I need to let you know that who you encountered was someone that used to be part of the Organization and has a vendetta against AJ specifically. We need you to be very careful when you come across him since he seems to be more active.” She huffed. You nodded curtly and waited. “Would you give AJ and I a moment? You are all set. Thank you for your honesty and recount of Monday.”

“Yes, of course. Thank you.” You said quietly, standing on slightly wobbly legs, and exited quickly. You didn’t give AJ a look, or even so much as a goodbye as you stepped into the hallway and up the stairs. Your mind was racing with the possibilities. Did she watch the cameras that were there for the fight? Or did she mean the city’s cameras for security? What about Joel’s cameras?

You held your composure, stepping out into the street. You glanced up, looking at the telephone poles and sides of buildings, spotting one of Joel’s cameras. You knew it was his–the city’s security cameras were high-tech and noticeable, whereas Joel’s blended in, matching the siding of buildings and put into corners that weren’t typically ideal for watching an area.

You slowed your stride, watching for as long as possible before continuing on into your apartment. You had a lot to tell Joel later tonight.

Joel watched you in the afternoon look directly at his camera and it felt like his heart was stopping. How the hell are you seeing me, sweetie? He paused the recording, looking you over to ensure you were not hurt before playing it back to see how you kept eye contact with the camera and continued on. He felt there would be more information from tonight’s meeting than he originally thought.

At 11pm, he stood in the alley adjacent to King’s Circle, one of the residence roads outside of the city that didn’t have cameras, and waited. He craved a cigarette, but blew off the thought as you came into view.

He had to take a double take, not sure it was you at first glance since you were wearing civilian clothes, but watched as you turned slowly until your eyes locked to his, walking over to the alleyway. He hid his shiver from you, cracking his neck and clearing his throat. “What happened today?” He asked quietly.

You launched into retelling your meeting, using your hands to demonstrate how AJ had exploded, and how Marianne stayed calm. You got about halfway through before Joel reached out, bringing your arms down to your sides and holding you steady. You paused, looking up at him and letting the words die in your throat. Had you said too much?

He squeezed you, tilting his head to look down at you. “What happened this morning?”

“What do you mean?” You rushed out, shaking your head and trying to shake him off of you. He persisted, pulling you towards him to indicate you wouldn’t talk your way out of it.

“You were fine this morning and then went back to your living quarters early. Tell me what happened.” He growled, almost nose to nose with you.

You scoffed, looking away from him quickly. “Nothing, AJ just spooked me and made it awkward.”

He held you steady, waiting. There’s more, don’t lie to me.

It felt like minutes passed as he stared at you, waiting for you to divulge the rest of the information. Your eyes glanced down at Joel’s neck, smooth and sweaty before snapping your eyes back up to his. You felt blood rush to the tips of your ears in embarrassment as his stoic face broke into a smirk, his fingers digging deeper into your arms.

You finally caved. “He asked me to get–” Huffing, uncomfortable. “On m-my knees…” You paused, swallowing your nervousness down as he released your arms just slightly. “To prove that all you did was leave me on the roof.”

He kept his face straight, not wanting to scare you into not telling him anything more. “Did you?” Joel’s blood chilled, waiting.

“What?”

“Did you get on your knees for him?” He persisted, giving you a slight shake and worried his eyebrows together.

Your mouth was agape, yanking yourself out of his grasp to slap him but he grabbed your wrist before you could. “No you fucking asshole! I told him to get off me. Like what I’m about to do to you if–”

He released you suddenly, pushing you away from him so that you couldn’t reach him without having to take a couple steps. He leaned against the wall, hands to his face briefly before looking at you, covering his mouth. Thank god you can stand up for yourself, sweetie. “You need to be more careful.”

You scoffed, crossing your arms to protect yourself. “What the fuck do you think I’m doing?”

Joel shook his head, tsking at you and motioning up to the corners of the building as if there was a camera. “I think you’re on camera looking flustered running back to your apartment. I think you’re on camera more than you realize, and if I have cameras, then so does Marianne.”

You paused, staring at him and then to the ground. “She said she watched the cameras in the meeting. That’s how she knew AJ ran away.” You said quietly, kicking your shoe against the pavement.

Joel sighed heavily. “Exactly. Just because I know where the cameras are doesn’t mean she couldn’t catch you slipping. You have to be cautious…even in your apartment.”

Back from quiet to anger again, your eyes flicked up to his. “I have to let my anger out somewhere Joel, I can’t just pretend everything is fine when I’m alone.”

Joel couldn’t understand how quickly your mood changed. He wondered if this was too much for you. “No, you have to keep it hidden. There might not be cameras in the apartment itself but there are in the hallway, with microphones made to pick up audio inside the units. You have to be mindful, sweetie.”

“Who the fuck are you to tell me how to act? And stop calling me that!” You really had never been as irritated as you were around Joel. It felt like he could see through your bullshit, through your facade, and would call you out, and you didn’t like it.

“I’m someone who survived it and escaped before it was too late. They have plenty of dirt on me, and they are just waiting to catch up.” He hissed, leaning against the wall again.

Frustrated, you threw your hands up in the air, feeling like a child. “Then why the hell are you here?”

He sighed heavily. You’re not getting it. “Because I need your help just as much as you need me. I want AJ to pay for what he did.”

“And what did he do exactly?” You face went red with anger as you thought about this morning and wanted Joel to spell it out.

Joel ground his teeth together, flicking his eyes up to you. It could be you so easily. “None of your fucking concern.”

A small chuckle left you as you crossed your arms, swaying towards where you entered the alley. “It is my concern if you want my help.”

He was growling now, deeply unsettled with how you were blowing it all off. “No, it isn’t, because if you don’t want the same thing to happen to you, then you’re going to listen to me, get me the information I need, and then leave when I tell you to.”

You scoffed, walking away. “Don’t fucking contact me again.”

“You’ll die if you don’t listen to me.” His hands became fists, white knuckles prominent as he held himself back from reaching for you.

You’d had it, walking towards the road and away from Joel. “Then I guess I’m dying.”

He ran behind you, hand circling your wrist and yanking you back into the alley. You squeaked, his hand coming up around your mouth, pushing your front against the brick. Fine. You want to know? “He grabbed a girl, lifted her skirt, and tortured her. He forced himself upon her. And when she was too loud, he snapped her neck and continued until he was done.” A deep huff, pushing you further into the wall. “He asked you to get on your knees to see what your limits were–to see if he could get under your skin. You’re on my camera and theirs being upset about it. You need to be careful because he watches too, I am not the only one. Do you understand?”

He kept his mouth close to your ear, releasing his hand from you to allow you to respond, watching you closely through it all. Your skin had gone clammy and cold, breath pausing and starting again with nerves as you tilted your head to look at him. With one quick nod, he released you, stepping away from you completely.

“I’ll keep watching.” He stated, walking back towards the entry to the alley. “He is going to try again.”

You stood there staring as he left, frozen in place. You counted to 60 again, collecting yourself before heading back to your apartment. You would do what Joel said.

Weeks began to go by, and you would receive messages from Joel semi-frequently checking in on you. It started every few days until suddenly it became every day when you would head home and crawl into bed, your phone would ding with a message from him. You weren’t against the messages once they started coming in, and slowly you saw how he cared about you, even though you knew he was trying to get information.

How are we able to text without this being watched, Joel?

Joel tried to keep his feelings under wraps, but the more he spoke with you, the more he saw you, he felt himself worrying more and more about your safety. He was able to observe you more closely when you requested to see him in person, how your eyes shined when he gave a suggestion for your super suit problems that helped, and how you were quick to respond to his messages. But he saw in himself how his heart raced when there would be a message from you, how his eyes were trained to find you on the screens, and how he craved to make you smile at him. He knew deep down he wouldn’t be able to hold back from you much longer.

Why I Love It: One of things I absolutely adore about Attoye fic writers is how inventive they are with the pairing. "Normal" Alternate Universe fics are honestly, some of my favorite type of fiction because it usually relies more on the writer's own world building, outside of the foundation the original creators of the IP laid for the story and characters. One of my favorite types of OTP AUs is “stripper fantasy”. I am a “Player’s Club” type chic, deep down (though I believe this was actually inspired by the P-Valley series). And while we don’t get into any real toxicity here (as you will find in that particular film), what you do get is the flavor of hood girl making money, and her man chasing after her and protecting her from fuckboys, bad customers, and the Madame’s (Ramonda) wrath.

This is the first set of fics I’ve read from the author. It’s sexy, sweet, domestic, funny and there are already three parts to the series. Hopefully there will be more, but do yourself a favor and read these.

Item Conversions for the Dragon Age RPG (Vol. 1)

The Dragon Age RPG is lucky in that it has a wealth of inspiration from the video games for new adventures, characters, locations, and items. Like most IPs that have an RPG attached to them, it can be tempting to ask “what would this look like in the RPG?” With this collection, which will not be only of its kind, we’ll take a look at the items from the video games and convert them for the RPG!

These are fan-made (by us here on the podcast) and totally optional. These are only our interpretations of how the item could appear in the RPG, and not a perfect conversion. We will also include an “item level” for these items. This is the level that it would be recommended for your PCs to be at minimum before finding an item like this.

Dalish Armor (Light Leather Armor, Level 2)

MASTERWORK: ARMOR RATING 4

Lovingly crafted by Dalish leather workers, this suit is constructed out of deerskin with images of birds and serpents hunting prey. The set, including boots and gloves, feels much lighter than it appears, and grants its bearer a +2 bonus to speed when moving through wooded areas.

Ring of Unheeded Wisdom (Ring, Level 6)

This dented steel ring seems to have been through many trials and in the hands of many owners. Bearers of the ring have reported strange voices telling them to “watch out” or “duck” when a potentially lethal force was headed their way, but most see it as paranoia of the wielders, most of whom are dangerous sellswords and criminals anyway. The bearer of the ring gains a +1 bonus on Perception tests to avoid being surprised when combat encounters begin, and a +1 on tests to resist and avoid the effects of traps.

Mark of Vigilance (Amulet, Level 10)

This potent magical amulet is a badge of honor among Templars and other mage-hunters. Granted by the Divine herself for exceptional service to the cause of policing forbidden arts, this amulet protects the wearer against harmful magics. The bearer gains Magic Resistance, a +2 bonus on tests to resist spells and other magical effects. If the bearer already has that ability from a talent or background (or both), their bonus increases by +1. Additionally, the bearer gains a +2 to Armor Rating against the attack of creatures with Mana scores or magical abilities, like the powers of most demons.

Evanura (Bastard Sword, Level 14)

MATERIAL: STEEL MASTERWORK: +2 ATTACK, +2 DAMAGE TALENT LEVELS: TWO FOCUS BENEFIT: YES RUNES: MASTER FROST RUNE

Forged by the high priest of June when the Dales belonged to the elves, this mighty blade has been wielded by the greatest of the Emerald Knights from its beginnings to its end in the Exalted March against the Dales. A powerful relic from the time of the Dales, any Dalish would be elevated to legendary status for recovering it. It is said that its blade is so sharp that it cuts Veil when swung. Thankfully it does not, but the blade ignores 3 points of Armor when striking a foe.

The Creationist’s Cord (Belt, Level 16)

A mighty tool of Creation magic specialists, this unassuming length of silk cord woven with lyrium threads is tied in dazzling knots and shapes. Often gifted to powerful healers for acts of extraordinary kindness or dedication in times of trouble, this powerful enchanted cord allows a mage to add their Magic to the damage healed when they cast spells that heal damage to Health. The cord also acts as a mighty conduit for new life to flow from the Fade, and allows a mage to double the Mana cost of a healing spell to add twice their Magic to the damage healed, or triple the spell’s original Mana cost to add thrice their Magic score to the damage healed.

You know, thinking about it all, I have to ask myself, are studios and entertainment corpo scum bags increasing public hate towards women and minorities with the release of these sub-par shows that try to pass off as progressive? I don’t think so, but there’s a case to be made. I think the release of shit like She-Hulk and Velma don’t actually cause people to hate women, just allows people who already do and some who just aren’t outwardly misogynistic to have a spotlight and a couple good points about the media being terrible, and say it’s because of sjw’s ruining everything with minority representation.

Also, Velma was apparently supposed to be a completely original IP, but the higher ups don’t want to take that kind of risk. Still, it’s not a defense for the show, but it gives insight into how it came to be. It’s still damaging to minorities as a whole when shit like this happens because it makes somewhat of a mockery of them in the public eye and allows more bigoted ideas to flourish because they have something to pivot off of, like how conservatives love to rush to a gay pedophile, a trans rapist, or a black thief for proof that all these people are terrible.

If we lived in an any better society, shit like She-Hulk and Velma not only wouldn’t have the place to exist, because in a better society strong women and minorities in shows and movies wouldn’t be an anomaly to flex at the media with, but also because people would just see a bad show and move on. Couple that with disrespect for the source material and universe, and you have the perfect media hate storm, and maybe that’s what executives want. Why make something good when something bad with minorities in it will get so much more attention? I think the point was to get people angry and talking, which is kind of scummy, cause if that was the point, they’re hanging up women and minorities as rage bait for people to throw their rotten tomatoes at and get more hate publicity, which directly puts more hate on the people you string up as a selling point in your media.

It’s obviously not coming from a genuine place of even social justice, the people who green light these shows and market them aren’t doing if for social justice or whatever, they’re doing it to rage bait anti-sjw’s and get cultishly left leaning sjw type people on board for people to hate even more (I am not some “enlightened centrist” I am a very left leaning person, but you know who the kind of people they want on board to be, if they want anyone, it could all just be for hate!). And it especially saddens me that the way companies can get rage bait now is from having minorities in their media, and oh boy they are exploiting the hate for minorities. It’s not about the ratings anymore, in this new landscape of media, it’s about the publicity, and you don’t get people talking more than when you fuck up, and they’re going to tape themselves fucking up for the whole world to see like clowns in a live circus.

It’s frankly disgusting, especially because it’s working. You’re not helping by giving bad shows publicity! You should look towards good shows instead and show companies you’re eyes aren’t magnetized to shit, because they’re just gonna keep making shit for you to gawk at if that’s all they see you doing! I read your challenges in translations list, and I agree with them for the large part, but I think you missed out on probably the practically biggest of them all:

The Pay.

Translations are not attributed much value. Or if it's the case, it almost always must be attached to quite the huge IP. (Like how the German translations of Haruki Murakami have settled for being done by a translator called Ursula Gräfe whom you'll only see doing work on "serious" novels from price winning literary authors and never in the manga/light novel/anime sections.) But then the value is still less based on the translation, but the IP itself enforcing levels of adequate accommodation.

Being a translator is seriously not an objectively sensible career choice you'd want to go for. And even if you do, you'd rather better try to become a political interpreter or something. This probably also has something to do with that science-subjects are always rated more valuable than the humanities, because science produces more of what is considered "hard value" fawning onto capitalism. Plus, humanities are kind of pigeonholed as the "woman"-subjects, so have sexism make everything even worse.

(All of which is further aggravated how language education in schools usually are just inefficient and painful, so almost everyone walks out half traumatized from the experience. Just think of the amounts of people who are forced to invest years of their lives on compulsory secondary languages and then just decide to drop it to hell as soon as school ends? (Cue, French.) How it literally damages people's confidence and self esteems because they couldn't succeed then and now just up and assume they can't later either. How somehow being competent in languages painted as something you either get the hang of naturally or are doomed to always suck ass at. And how you probably don't need it anyway, because that's not the asset to earn you that bread onto the table. Hint: It's the worst brainwashing ever. Talent certainly plays a role for literary quality, but you don't need Goethe-levels of literary genius for competency, which is entirely up to effort and finding your own efficient learning methods. And frankly, most entertainment pieces really aren't so up there that solid competency wouldn't do the job already.)

Which is very sad, because for a starter, it definitely discourages you from spending that effort to learn more languages. And learning languages widens up your horizons, because for becoming fluent in the language, you will also be compelled to dive into the culture it's situated in and have your own take a backseat while observing it. By doing that, you gain access to grasping and expressing whole new concepts. Which will help you to get behind somebody else's PoV if nothing else because you also notice that learning somebody else's personal language/currency works almost exactly the same way. (I daresay the world would definitely be a more peaceful and diverse place if everybody learned more languages in a way that teaches them the beauty of it. A lot of people aren't even really unwilling for acceptance, they are just literally incapable. You can't really, unless you learned the hows.) And then the few people who build those bridges for you get devalued by default.

That's actually a problem, because learning languages is a very mindful effort to be spent, often painstakingly. Especially if you really want to be capable in it, it's a lifelong never-ending effort of keeping yourself up to beef with the ever happening changes that happen as languages reflect the cultures of their time. Plural at that even within one language, since there are all sorts of niches, social circles etc. (Well, you should do that anyway, but reasons....)

Who does that much of an effort these days, where actually lived passion is kind of dying? Not a lot. And the few that do and are lucky enough to get that recognized as a skill of value are those who can choose their jobs and demand an appropriate price. And that very likely is not going to be your anime/manga/light novel/drama/pulp industries. Regardless of passion, you still have living expenses to earn. If you know Japanese, maybe probably rather go somewhere into the car industry. If you know Chinese, maybe go somewhere trade business related, etc.

Another big problem is also that a lot of entertainment industries are kind of thinking their audience is stupid...? (And arguably, they are even right a lot of times, sadly…) So why spend more money into productions that were cheap-ass light entertainment products nobody took really serious to begin with. Or are often just abused as badly made advertisements for their source media (modern anime, I'm looking at you). In the manga/light novel industry, some Japanese media conglomerates were wanting to push out more releases than established local publishers and their translators were able to handle. They got told so, what did they do? Outsourced a number to companies who are getting infamous for offering low pay. (Medibang has been one of them as of recent.)

And practically that means, that you will inevitably wind up with not so competent translators if your offered pay range is that low… or you get none at all. (In case anyone's interested, recently some German light novel publications translated from English rather than directly from Japanese caused a shitstorm. To top that off, some of those English ones have also been picked out for having some translation botches already.) Add to that working conditions can be/are bad, a lot of cranked out only caring for speed, QC only happening very limitedly or not at all, cases of translations getting redacted in the editorial stages, later discovered mistakes never being fixed because it would be too much work to correct it, etc. Probably not a job you actually want to work in, if you have a choice. So obviously less professionally aspiring translators are coming to be.

That's the translations for work side of things.

The other side will inevitably also crop up, and that's the fantranslation side of things. Fantranslations vs. professional is a tiring old battle that seems to never die out. It seemed to really have been this notorious only in Anime/Manga weeb thing before, but dramas with its increasing following look like they're taking the same path right now.

I think a part of putting fantranslations onto a pedestal it is tied somehow the widespread belief that permeates everything, "if you are into something/passionate about it, your work will be better!" (Anyone thinking of all those interview tips to convince the HR department of companies?) Which is a huge lie. Sure passion can increase your motivation to learn at all, somebody who puts their heart blood into something is likely more convincing to put care into something, but all of that still is very separate to talent, attained skill, access to proper learning methods - or knowing how to research the unknown reliably and fast. (Very important bit. It's impossible to be in the know of every cultural circle's specialized language, you need to have the skills where you can get that knowledge from.) That kind of devalues the worth of official work for pay in a pretty bad way, too. (Passion, fun and work should not be contradictions, but somehow it usually winds up being.) I think art generally suffers from that, where genius in art is kind of attached to the dirt poor suffering artist image.

And then, definitely, I think a lot of that is tied to all the bad traits usually attached to "weebs" and also the social media attention seeking instant gratification addiction. So somebody has some half-assed knowledge, or is really into some title and wants to flaunt their knowledge for attention. I think most people learning something new get into this stage at some point, where you are just excited to showcase that new thing you attained (regardless of its actual quality). But often there are a number of unhealthy environmental parameters that turn this into something pretty nasty and toxic with mob dynamics, too emotionally loaded personally and people get aggressive/defensive. (And definitely also has become a headache to translators, you always risk being bashed, it's not nice to read accounts of these.) And there is also the corner of pirates making money out of it all, who definitely don't care much about quality translations.

That's also why I'm a bit conflicted about fantranslations and crowdsourced translations. Yes, there are passionate and competent people who do this because they really just love doing it and so do it as a side because they have other main jobs. But there are also some who aren't out of bad reasons. But another kinda big thing in between these sections is that there really isn't much of a proper quality checking pipeline. You're already stuck with a crowd of middling translators to begin with. And sure there are sometimes many eager translators out there, but a lot of them, I think, are also just eager to flex their language learning muscles. (You learn best by using it, right?) And seriously, it's much easier and comfortable to just cop out some fantranslation (and get some attention) over something to love than go for the traditional ways to increasing your skills. Oh, and maybe you could even earn a penny for it? Cool! There is nothing wrong with translating the things you love. But it becomes a problem, when it's the only thing out there, being made official by people above who just take it without any proper quality checking and think it's ok to just throw it at an audience thinking they won't notice and care anyway. (Hint: globalization is a thing, more people are learning some levels of all sorts of languages with resources more easily available than you'd think…) It's also not helpful for the people learning, because then they will be badly informed about their own actual competency level. And that in turn may drag down other role efforts in the project in all sorts of sad ways. (I once saw a manga scanlation whose translation was even worse than google translate, but the lettering of the lines into the panels was pretty nice looking. I felt so bad for the editor's efforts being wasted like that.)

What this practically means to best do to improve things, I'm not sure. Crowdsourcing is cool as a concept, but if it's abused for cheap work force, then it's kind of not anymore. Tipping indie subbers for their efforts is nice for showing value for said efforts, but it doesn't change you're monetarily supporting grey action and that's icky in its own right. Just buying official versions with their bad translations will imply platforms and companies that don't care, that they can get away with it anyway. Not supporting official means is sad for the authors and everyone else on the staff and obviously also not helping to get them their pay and royalties, which is obviously a big problem, too. Pointing out errors in official translations is certainly important, but also runs risk to be abused by that other crowd trying to legitimize pirating. And quickly turns into bashing of the poor translator(s) who may have been actually doing their best or were just overworked. Etc, etc. It's like whatever you do, it winds up being no good. 💧

My personal cop out for the last two decades for a number of languages whose content I like e.g. Japanese was to simply learn it, so I can ignore translations and their quality for my personal enjoyment. (Also, directly buying manga in Japanese is cheaper than local versions, an extra plus.) And I was kind of just blissfully ignoring the debate as good as I could until there were some titles coming I was really looking forward to translated version coming, so I could recommend them to people. (And then wind up being eternally conflicted about doing so. Am I still heaving heavy sighs about Kieta Hatsukoi in English or I Hear the Sunspot in German? Absolutely.) … And then me gets unexpectedly into Thai stuff, and it's wholly dependence on subs again, and IT'S A FRIGGING PAIN. But to just start learning yet another language when I haven't even polished my started ones and then for basically just some dramas for a language that wouldn't have any conceivable use on my CV? (<- See the brainwashing at work right there?)

The best thing I was able to come up with so far is that if good translations are spotted, they should get their deserved praise by being talked about. But that is pretty hard to do on a bigger scale that matters, because you can't do that when you don't actually know if they are good. Translations like scriptwriting are kind of invisible roles that only get visible when they are trashed upon. (And a really good translation's entire point is to render itself unnoticeable.) Aside from… I don't even remember the last time I saw a really brilliant translation anymore.

One note on Challenge #2 and enforced philosophies, too: Specifically for Japan, they usually don't care about international markets, but when they do, they often have this mentality of protectiveness. They hate to be potentially misunderstood and then lose face. Ambiguity is in their language, and a lot of their type of communication is to not single out the elephant in the room and name it. That's the entire point to begin with, but Western languages aren't quite like that. What results is that some niche things on which they know that it runs huge risks to be misunderstood are deliberately kept under wraps. (I've read interesting reports of some people buying some erotic game only to find out they are geolocked to Japanese OS systems.) If anyone's also interested, they could dig into Neon Genesis Evangelion comeback story to availability. Accounts have it that Funimation made an apparently kinda more free translation dub for the third Rebuild movie, showing it at a Con, shipping fans going livid and there happened to be somebody from the Japanese company side there, who walked out of it basically traumatized. I think that's a trend that might grow sooner or later when Japan is getting it into their minds to consider international audiences more. In anime/manga they already start to do so at places. Maybe other countries will follow suit once their IPs are big enough.

Agreed. And this is a minefield because it also gets into ownership of IP. Who owns the words (subs)? The original content creator? The translator? Is it really yours if someone else wrote it first? Where is the line drawn? It's the old fanfic argument.

Like, for example, German translators (of literary books etc..) own the copyright to their translations (unless they were work for hire) but they are some of the only ones in the world. German copyright law is... different. This has resulted in some pretty INSANE titles, because titles are also under copyright in Germany (but not, for example, in the USA). It also means writers (who have the choice) will hire German translators based/native to outside of Germany so they don't have to deal with the copyright contract issues.

On the other end of the spectrum is China who has no interest in protecting or playing nice with any IP legislation (country specific or international). So the best most authors can hope for is a Taiwanese publishing deal.
