#my art#this is how I think theyd present themselves either in person or in headspace. the slouchers <3#sifs outfit is simple; the boots i always give them (but with star laces for funsies); loose sweater; simple pants#the pants are Meant to be jeans but isat doesnt Specifically Have Jeans so. theyre just Pants.#the sweater is slightly looser bc sif doesnt seem like a Form Fitting Clothes kinda guy to me but hes Trying to be more open#on particularly good days theyll roll the sleeves up or wear a sleeveless one methinks#even if everyone Knows abt the self-harm scars its hard to Look at them.#i also associate them being more open with them not wearing an eyepatch. esp bc hes the only one of the three to go without it#for mal (or 'ami' as i like to call it) i wanted smth reminiscent of a mourning outfit bc mal du pays means homesickness#and i picked 'ami' as a nickname bc ami means friend :] at least according to my basic translator. i dont speak french <3#ami's outfit being dark is also reminiscent of the inversion thing its got going on in canon.#ik the veil is starred in the original but i think ami would want the fewest reminders of home. on account of The Issues#(actually if i can come back to sifs laces sif also has issues with reminders of it bc of the memory loss but the shoelaces are His Choice—#—which gives them a form of control over it and they can keep it subtle or undo it if he wants. which makes it easier)#anyway. i put amis hair in an updo and smoothed the hat bc i think ami wants to be Unremarkable. (found the images from google and wikipedia respectively, the first came up if you search 'brown stays', the second is on the wiki article for the history of corsets)
these are (iirc) kinda pre-corsets corests? they were used for the same things; supporting breasts, heloing posture, back support etc and may be laced either at the front or the back but often connect over the shoulders... like a vest... like Joel skin... yeah thats all my reasoning basically... also im a nerd
i especially like the ones laced in the front as they especially look like Joel's skin's vest
also im no expert on historical clothing, i just happen to watch alot of videos by people who are and have random knowledge on it - if i got anything wrong or youd like to add anything, feel free to add or correct me on this!

thinking about how i need more tattoos
#got my first tattoo three years ago last week#and i have gotten no more since#and honestly that is a TRAGEDY#i want some simple line art tattoos on my arms and ribs#i’ve spent so much of my life feminizing myself bc people treated me better that way#and existing in this world and socializing is already hard enough so anything that made me more accepted was what i chose#but i’m so far away from how i actually see myself#i wear femininity like ill fitting armour#it protects me but the weight of it is suffocating#anyway#i think i’m ready to start moving away from that in some ways#it’s fucking hard to chose between feeling comfortable in your own skin or moving just a little bit easier through the world#i don’t want to be looked at#i so often want to be invisible but it’s not because i’m ashamed of my body#i just want to move through the world in peace#anyway i went on a tangent#but fuck man i need more tattoos#personal#(*when i mention femininity i think i mean more conformity. that just translated to stereotypical feminine expectations in my case.)

i wear a lot of skirts and pink and whatnot as my style has developed with me & my personality but when one of those age regression girlies latch onto me....i do not like that

Sorry but if your tall range is defined as “5’7 and over” I don’t think this is going to work
#i am JUST trying to find a pair of sweatpants that fit my body as a woman who is 6’1 (and most of that is; unfortunately; leg)#AND i need high rise so men’s sweatpants don’t tend to work for me. they’re either too tight around the waist#or they fit fine but i have to hike them up such that i end up with a few inches of ankle exposed#and look. i don’t care if my pyjamas are short on me. i’ve made peace with that fact but it’s fine because i will be in bed and no one will#see me. and honestly most of the time i wear shorts to bed anyway#but with sweatpants i’m going to probably leave the house in them and at the very least be out of bed#and i don’t want my ankles exposed!! it looks ridiculous#my kingdom for a pair of sweats that start at the top of my hips and end at my feet#but seriously. 5’7. 5’7 is your idea of tall. iiii#swear to god the only place i’ve ever found trousers long enough for me just on the rack is america lol. if anything ever happens#to my grey sweats with the university insignia on them idk what i’ll do#i also have a couple of pairs from am*zon but they were SO overpriced and one of them has a giant hole on the inside thigh 😐 and i’ve only#had them for like… 18 months? at the most? other than that i do love them. i like that they’re super comfortable but the material doesn’t#look like sweatpants (partly because they’re black) so i can wear them to legitimate places and not worry that people think i’m a slob#i mean they don’t read as like smart trousers or jeans but they don’t read as sweats either. they just look like a generic black trouser#i would not care at this stage though if i was blatantly wearing joggers or sweats. i just need a big pant#i got out of the habit of wearing jeans/anything tight during my very long knee recovery in which i either wore shorts; sweats#or festival pants the whole time to accomodate for a brace; movement of the knee; icing the knee; etc#and now it’s like. i CAN wear jeans but i prefer not to. i don’t like leggings; i feel all exposed and nasty. plus i lost some weight during#this process because i lost my appetite and some of my favourite jeans are now super baggy on me#I NEED BIG PANTS. professional stuff is fine because i can just wear a dress and tights but like.. i’m not putting on tights just to be#at home lol. who does that#long tall sally you are my last hope#personal

I want a LOT more support for the body neutrality movement over body positivity at this point because in my eyes body pos gave us midsize people reassuring one another that they weren’t fat and barely-chubby models donning padding and shapewear to create the Perfectly Sexy Hourglass fatty so we could have unrealistic standards just the same as everyone else.

A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)
Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!
This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.
This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions in your writing, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!
This is NOT a medical resource!!! And never tell a real person you think they're using a cane wrong!
The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!
A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.
Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height can make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)
(some people elect to use a cane wrong for their personal situation despite this, everyone is different!)

When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane and the bad leg and follow with the good leg!
Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.
In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.
Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!
(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)
The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!
Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.
The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!
This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!
However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.
Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)
Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.
Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)

If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!
When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!
For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.
When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)
When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)

in HEMA (aka historical european fencing), much of the sport is done with fencing masks on, so identifying your clubmates during sparring or tourneys is just based on gear. you know, what color their jacket and pants are, what patches they have on it, how is their mask painted. If someone borrows someone else's jacket it's legitimately jarring, like having someone with an entirely different body type and way of moving stealing your friend's face.
Once i read about historical fishermen in the north sea and how they each had a specific hat pattern that their buddies would use to identity them while they were bundled up. It was so much part of their identity that they were often buried wearing those hats. The gear is like your name, a visual identifier of YOU when you do not have a face.
anyway, back when I was buying gear i got my pants in ELECTRIC blue. I figured i was gonna get a black or grey jacket. but HEMA gear is kind of expensive because it's all custom- or handmade, so instead of spending $400 on a new jacket I picked up one secondhand for like 20. Except the only jacket that fit me was bright, SCARLET red. And I already had my expensive, new, custom, BLUE pants. I look like a damn rocket pop or like, a mixed Icee. I was like, shit! I should switch my jacket before i become the rocket pop guy!!!
Long story short, not only am I now the rocket pop guy, the color scheme has bled into my entire wardrobe. Every-fucking-thing I own is red and blue. I look like a french revolutionary. I look like a founding father in a school play. I have become a northern fisherman in my stripey hat. Now, even if I DO get a new jacket, I feel like I GOTTA buy it in red, yk? Otherwise they won't recognize me. Maybe I won't recognize me. I'm the rocket pop guy!!!
