Sorry about the data breach post if it came off a certain way, and for failing to point out that it wasn't all new (though there's some things I thought were new that weren't). I still stand by it being a good idea to change your passwords when these things happen and that was my main point, wasn't my intention to cause panic and it started off as a "just letting my mutuals know" thing, I forget stuff can explode on this site.
No! Not all the data leaked is new, I figured not all of it was but the tumblr and wattpad stuff may be older ones and I put that together later, oop.
Apologize if I caused any panic- that's honestly never part of my intention. It was originally like a change your password reminder just in case. :')

A supermassive data leak has been discovered (the biggest ever in fact.) : what does it mean and what to do?
(This is a small amateur post by someone interested in privacy and safety online and that wants to encourage good habits. And this with this new leak, it is a good time to remind people of a few basic habits to have online. This is meant to be accessible as much as possible and the list of tips is non-exhaustive.) (+See the end for a few of the sources used)
A new data leak of 12 terabytes of information, some compiled from previous data breaches, has been publicly posted and exposed. A lot of big websites are concerned, such as : weibo, tencent, twitter, Adobe, Wattpad, MySpace, Deezer, LinkedIn, Canva, Dropbox, Telegram.... So yeah. You are very likely to be concerned.
How to know if you are concerned?
The website Cybernews propose a tool to easily search If you're concerned by the data leak and there is also the classic Have I Been Pwned. You can also check the leaked data yourself.
In any case, don't panic. If you're concerned start by changing your passwords (your email's password too. Especially this one.) and maybe look into improving your habits online.
Some tips to improve your safety online
Whether you're concerned or not by the data breach, there are some easy tips and habit you can use to improve your security.
- DO NOT USE THE SAME PASSWORD ON EVERY WEBSITE.
- DO NOT use a SIMILAR password with only slight differences and the same method to create it either !!!!
- DO use a strong password: long (like at least 10 characters), complex with several letters (lower and upper case), several numbers and others characters in a random/complex order. You can also use a sentence as a password (complexified ofc) for example.
- Enable two-factor authentification when you can.
- I advise to use a password manager if you can and want. Choose wisely but there are some great options, with free and premiums possibilities such as Dashline, Bitwarden, 1Password or the recent ProtonPass. Be careful to choose a very strong master password that you'll be able to memorize!
- Bonus: use aliases for you emails (for example via SimpleLogin)
To learn more + ressources that I personally like :
- Cybernews' article on this data leak
- Forbes' article
- NBTV : a YouTube channel, they're also on other platforms, that educates on the subjects of privacy and safety online.
- Proton: a Swiss-based society that proposes several privacy-based services such as ProtonMail, ProtonPass, Proton Drive, ProtonVPN... The free options are already quite interesting imo but you can also upgrade to a paid plan for additional storage and more options (they are often on sales and if you use them they are worth it). (There are other options if you prefer)
- SimpleLogin: allows you to create multiple aliases for the same mail address (there are other options)

One thing I definitely didn't like about Wattpad was how it forced you to make an account half way through reading something.
That, plus the one time they had a data breach (if I remember correctly it was specifically e-mail adresses) and talked about that... On Twitter. Imagine being someone with a Wattpad account who didn't use Twitter? I hadn't touched my Wattpad account in ages but after that I completely deleted it.

FLIPPING ELON THE BIRD: A Guide
STEP ONE:
You'll want to decide where to go. My recommendations: Of course you can always host your own site or use a blog and link people to it... but assuming you are leaving twitter you're probably looking for something a little more social.
To my experience... every site has pros and cons, ideal usecases.
Twitter, specifically, falls under the category of 'microblogging'. My recommendation is Mastodon but there are other places to go! Most of the microblogging places suck tho. lol -Spoutable (being built, not ready) -Hive (unstable) If you find yourself looking for (or posting) other kinds of content there are plenty of other options though. ===STORIES=== -here -wattpad -literotica (smut) -reddit (some of the best horrors on the internet can actually be found there) -fanfiction.net (obvious) ===ART=== -here -instagram (if you just wanna show off and chat but are mostly pg/pg13) -artstation (if you wanna make a portfolio) -da (if you wanna hang out with other artists) -newgrounds (more of a multimedia social site for creators) -pixiv (all kinds of art! unique rules though because you're essentially going by japanese rules) -furaffinity (for the fuzzies) ===MUSIC=== -bandcamp (album releases) -soundcloud (albums and snippets) -newgrounds (multimedia site! get feedback and chat) -soundtrap
===GAMEDEV=== -itch.io -gamejolt
There are TONS of places.
STEP TWO:
You will want to start clearing house. If you're smart, and you probably are, you'll want to delete as much information about yourself as possible from twitter. ( https://www.tweeteraser.com/ ) << This will not get all replies or media... I think. But it helps. Also be sure to change ALL personally identifiable information on your profile. Delete your phone number. There will inevitably be one or more data breaches. Why am i sure? -the guy made a lot of smart, disgruntled ex-employees -there have already been bad-actors verified within the company including a saudi spy ( https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/09/twitter-saudi-arabia-dissident-spying ) -he is firing all the employees including people responsible for upkeep and security One of the rules of technology is "if it can go wrong, it will". Especially when you stack the deck against yourself like this. You do NOT want to be a casualty of Elon Musk's recklessness so protect yourself.
STEP THREE:
Put links to your new socials up. (this is now against TOS and they might ban you, eventually here). If you want to play it safe, store it in an image or something. (https://carrd.co/dashboard) Actively look for the socials for people you follow, who follow you, and add them on every platform you are on. You might need to send DMs to ask if they have other socials. You should not have to lose your contacts because of Musk's bad decision-making. If they are not worth looking up, they aren't worth your time.
And that's it. Just leave your twitter up for DMs in case someone needs to ask you where to find you.

There's a website that tracks if your email has been associated with any data breaches. What I find funny is the only breach mine has been involved in was fucking Wattpad. Eternal punishment for being depressed on main on a fanfiction app is the funnies thing that could've happened

Tumblr media Tumblr media
ff.net has been in complete shambles for the past several years and is a notorious hive for plagiarism. The mods also nuked thousands of fics from the platform for reasons ranging from justified to incredibly questionable, and the site has had two of these mass purges in its lifetime. It's also been on the decline for years with constant outages, unresponsive mods, and a piss-poor tagging and search function. The owners of the site do not seem keen on even really giving the base code a spit shine, and I'd really question the security of it overall. I would not be surprised if they have a major data breach in the years to come. Don't get me wrong, I love it to death in a nostalgic way, but I can see why it's not exactly a great place to post fic these days.
Wattpad, usually the second site mentioned in these discussions, hosts tagged erotica alongside the rest of its content with no filter by default. This means you can find erotica in any search query you use unless you specifically exclude the tag. It's also a notorious hive for rpf, and allows rpf erotica. It also allows sexual content of 16 year olds, as it states in its code of conduct that, quote, "the age of consent is 16+ on Wattpad".
And really, those are the only notable contenders against ao3. Any other website you could list would fall into "niche" territory, and most writers do want their work to be seen so they can gain traction and potentially a clientele later on if they want to enter writing professionally. Plus, blogging sites like Tumblr tend to not be very conducive to posting fic as they aren't designed with a book format in mind, so word limits are tighter, you have to manually stitch a sort of chapter browser together by yourself as you post the fic, readers will encounter your fic in reverse chronological order, and honestly I could go on. Plus, Tumblr's tagging system is also complete garb, and if people don't reblog your fic, you're SOL. So, while I've heard of Fanfiction Online and have seen some promise in Quotev (I've made an account there recently, so consider that a "to be continued"), sadly, in terms of usability and popularity, all alternatives are overshadowed to the point of complete obscurity by the behemoth that is ao3.
Trust me, I hate that website and the cesspool it plays host to. Ever since I learned just how bad it was over there, I haven't spent a single second of my time on it. However, I can't blame aspiring writers for using it in the same way I can't blame other content creators for using YouTube rather than Dailymotion or Vimeo, despite YouTube's openly predatory practices towards their artists and child audiences (the Elsagate stuff never stopped, they're just using Mickey and Sonic now). The site holds a soft monopoly over the realm of fanfiction publication, and it's going to take a website that directly outclasses it in terms of user-friendliness to even really start giving it trouble and to convince the majority of the audience to switch over.
I'm all for taking as much of an audience away from that hellhole as possible though, so I'll gladly vouch for any alternative website that directly outclasses ao3 purely by design. Hell, ao3's code is completely open-source. If anyone manages to literally make a better ao3 (maybe even implementing those lofty promises of multimedia support that they've been harping on for years, hm?), I'll make an account on there the moment I hear of it and spread the word of it as far as I can manage.
Honestly, I think it really speaks to the state of fan culture overall that the best place to view and post fanfiction online is a csem hive, and I really want to change that message if I can. Unfortunately though, as much as I want a viable alternative, we're stuck between YouTube and Dailymotion, and I cannot blame anyone for wanting to stay away from Dailymotion.
Also @proship-blocklist since it was your post that was involved in this, feel free to add your input as an author/reader if you feel so inclined.

I used Wattpad for about two years because unfortunately I had a larry phase, but then I came back to ao3 and now I'm (not) free of sin
Anonymous asked: Since we’re taking fanfiction sites I have a story to share… my bf pulled up a website where you can check if any sites have leaked the password for your email. Pretty cool right? So I put in my spam email, the one I use for absolute trash all across the web, and get one hit. ONE. Wattpad.
seems like we're seeing multiple people who were affected by the wattpad data breach ... or the wattpad larry phenomenon, i suppose, (not that this was limited to wp but ykwim)

The Crucial Role of Identity and Access Management Solution in Cyber Security (on Wattpad) https://www.wattpad.com/1400036295-the-crucial-role-of-identity-and-access-management?utm_source=web&utm_medium=tumblr&utm_content=share_reading&wp_uname=florenceroydd&wp_originator=634BzezGlst8fy9062TNI4OJD3F4GFXjjzApyputK4V3MGHF%2Fe2T%2BcBRJZLJtebZ3%2BeTCY%2F7ovq8ml10UYbR3dBY7IWWhH5oiku2VONjsZWEVjXoPjvD7TOjY4p27EhA Identity and Access Management (IAM) security is the unsung hero of modern cybersecurity. It safeguards your organization's data, reduces the risk of breaches, and simplifies regulatory compliance.

creep confession.
he made an account on wattpad in 2016 using his real name. yes, i looked for his profile there because i wanted to hack into his instagram to find nudes. that was before, when i was more obsessed than really in love with him. when i had no empathy for him.
so i looked for his accounts on sites that had had significant data breaches. wattpad was obviously one of the big names. and there it was, his full name. even a picture of him back then.
yeah, i went full speed and downloaded the whole thing. the archive was 21gb, easy peasy, BUT it was hugely compressed in a .rar archive and the ACTUAL size was 130gb. so i deleted all my favourite games, including the witcher 3 (already redownloaded), just so i could possibly maybe find some lewd pics of him in his chats.
actually opening the archive was hard. i needed to find a program that could read .sql archives and not load it all on my ram because duh it was literally 130gb and i only have 8gb of ram (not how it works, but i mean, the scale).
i eventually found his account among the leaked ones, but his password wasn’t compromised. i only found his email among all of it, and his birthday which i already knew.
i was so frustrated (for going that far and getting so little) that i sent him a creepy email. more as a way to intimidate him than anything. to let him know i had his email, even if it’s not publicly available. but it was an old outlook account and i don’t even think it’s logged on his phone. likely he’ll never see it.
but i mean, it wasn’t that hard for me. if he saw it, he’d be like “how the fuck?”, but looking for his accounts on breached sites isn’t that big of a deal, intellectually speaking. it’s just the fact that i actually devoted hours of my life for doing that, to find more about him when he didn’t want me to (because he doesn’t know me). that’s what’s actually creepy. and criminal.
(funnily, my wattpad acc was also leaked, though i didn’t use my real name. i didn't look for it but i know because they tried to hack my twitter under that email. luckily twitter sends a confirmation code to your email, and the email i use for those accs has a different password that i made when i was 10. i have 3 email accs and that one is the only one that is repeatedly tried to be hacked when i check login attemps [middle eastern or slav ips only], so i guess wattpad is guilty)

whether you use wattpad or not, please read and share this post – it regards an issue about wattpad users' informations having been sold and exposed and can be in potentional danger.
wattpad took quite some sweet time with coming out about it themselves, i got an ask about it just minutes ago though and figured it might also be worth sharing it here as well.
it was recently found out that a lot of users have had their personal/private sold by Shiny Hunters. it's a group known for selling databases to companies through data breaches (a breach is, put very simply, the (un)intentional leak of personal/private information).
some time ago, users had struggles accessing their accounts, as far as i've understood because of the data breaches – they can include general information such as names/usernames, passwords, email address, location, date of birth, contact number. other than that, this sort of information can/have also been revealed:
Tumblr media
i don't think i even have to say this but this (obviously) puts a lot of people in danger.
to avoid this, changing the password to both your wattpad account as well as the google/facebook connected to it helps, whether you've been affected by a breach or not – on that note, it helps even more if you use different passwords for each when you change them. while it sounds like a 'simple' method, not only people in general but also wattpad (eventually) recommended changing your password.
another way to ensure your safety is to search up 'opt out of breach':
click haveibeenpawned, which most likely will be the first results in the search.
enter the email address you used for wattpad to receive an email with instructions; all you have to do is to follow the steps.
your email address will not be available to the public and will instead be removed from lists of breaches that have included it.
it's a bit of a hassle but logging out of your account after every time you've used it reduces the risk of someone getting access to it by 25%.
there are a few more ways to ensure your safety for the future:
Tumblr media
like mentioned, those who had problems with accessing to their wattpad account are those who have been affected by a breach. this also means that if you've had access to your account, you haven't been affected by it. however, keep in mind that in general 271 million people have been affected by data breaches so please, share this with others for the sake of their privacy and safety.
on that note, i may also add thay i am simply quoting wattpad user @/walkingecho's book, 'wattpad strategies no one told you about'. they have written quite a lot about this whole issue and have also included links to various sources/informations. they also regularly post updates that are both helpful and important so i highly recommend checking it out.
keep in mind that i am by no means an expert in this area and am only sharing the information and advice i've been told – if someone has something to add or sees something in this post that needs to be corrected, let me know.
please, please, please, whether you use wattpad or not, reblog this and/or in any way possible share this with other wattpad-users you know. 271 million affected people is a ridiculously high number. knowing that they've had their private information sold and exposed and can be in danger should be an obvious sign to spread this.
