Nymphaeaceae (Waterliles)

Waterlilies were among the first flowering plants (angiosperms) to evolve and they’re at least 125 million years old. If you build a pond, and you want a waterlily it’s recommended that you put it in a pot. If you plant it in the soil, it spreads by rhizomes, and pretty soon it will fill up all the available space. 

These photos were taken yesterday at Beaver Lake in Vancouver’s Stanley Park. Stanley Park was established in 1886 and, at 1001 acres, is one of the largest city parks in the world (Central Park in New York is 840 acres). Beaver Lake is a natural feature in the center of the park. Unfortunately, in 1936 fragrant waterlilies were introduced to celebrate the parks 50th anniversary. This is the result. 

Beavers returned to Beaver Lake in 2008 after an absence of sixty years. Beavers eat waterlilies but these beavers had better get busy. As you can see, waterlilies grow like a “weed’.

That's also Greta's favorite place to drink from, so I constantly have to top off the water.

Damn I've done a lot of amphibians so far this year but it's just what came to mind.

The genus has a cosmopolitan distribution. Many species are cultivated as ornamental plants, and many cultivars have been bred. Some taxa occur as introduced species where they are not native, and some are weeds. My sketches start life as hand-drawn graphite images made on cartridge paper. I often work on these with charcoal, oil pastel or Caran d'Ache to create the look I'm after. The artwork is then scanned and finessed digitally ready for fine art printing. This process often referred to as Giclée printing uses the highest standard of printing methods to give gallery quality results that maintain all the details of the original sketch. The graphite pencils I use are Faber-Castel, the oil pastels are Sennelier and the china-graph is Caran d’Ache. The inks are pigment based archive quality (100years+). The heavyweight specialist papers I use are of the best professional quality having a wonderful surface designed specifically for fine art drawings and illustrations. When Nikon launched a new and affordable 40 mm macro lens the summer of 2011, it came as some of a surprise for Nikon users.

I acquired one for my self the same fall, and here is photograph illustrating how this lens handling being a close-up-lens. It was also said to be an OK standard lens for street photography and portraits.

Great price/performance

Personally, I found it to work well as a 60 mm ekvivalent Macro-lens on the DX-Nikon cameras. But it never really worked as a universal standard lens, mostly because I am not a fan of 50 mm +/- focal length. I prefer the 20 mm for street photo, in combination with the 85 mm as 2 prime lens offerings.

The optical performance as a macro was excellent, but as a standard lens it performed as an average lens. I ended up selling it after a couple of years. Partly because I left DX for the FX-picture format.

But I also discovered that a 40 mm macro meant coming very physical close to any subject. Meaning scaring away any small animal or insects, or making the light conditions even more difficult and challenging.

Prefer some distance for close-ups

As a Macro/Micro-lens I rather recommend the 105 mm Micro-Nikkor VR for any photographer who wants to do some close-up work with living macro-fauna. For the user starting with macro-photography on a budget, the 40 mm Micro-Nikkor is an excellent choice, with a price/performance which is hard to beat. As of 2022, the lens is still produced and sold, but as Nikon is leaving its F-lens mount cameras, expect it to be discontinued in a not to distant future.

Nikon has introduced two Macro-lenses for their Z-mount mirrorless cameras. The 105 mm got another iteration, but a 50 mm has taken over for the DX 40 mm and the FX 60 mm macros. Seeing as the 50 mm is a 75 mm ekvivalent on a DX Z-camera, it should be an interesting offering as an affordable macro/portrait-lens combination. Even if the price point is double the old 40 mm, but equal to the old 60 mm.
