I took this back around the year 2000. I did a little Photoshop trickery with it, which I do now and again. I wanted to bring out the light of summer, which is importnt on a winter day.

“BNSF Train at Drano Lake, Washington.”
©2024 Gary L. Quay
The Eastern Columbia Gorge is where I go when I am sick of the unbroken cloud cover of the Portland area. Fluffy clouds are the best. Ominous clouds are even better. These are a mixture of the two. Throw in a train, and we’re cookin’.

“Custard King, Astoria, Oregon.”
©2024 Gary L. Quay
Astoria, Oregon is a town on the north Oregon Coast that is famous for its fishing prowess, bad weather, and being able to navigate the Columbia Bar, which is where the Mighty Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, and neither is too happy about it. It has many fine restaurants, a historic downtown, and the Astoria-Megler Bridge, the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. It also has the Custard King.

Gaia pointed out these "stars" in the melting ice in Rowland Lake as we were driving by. As usual, she sees things that I miss. They look like little plasma bursts.

“Shadows and Light, Tygh Valley, Oregon.”
©2024 Gary L. Quay
I have wanted to take pictures at this spot for years, and I finally made it there with the sun at the right angle. It’s along Rt 197 near Tygh Valley, Oregon. I got out the big lens to bring it up close.
I took some film images while I was there. If they look good, I may post some.

“The Columbia from Mayer State Park, Oregon.”
©2023 Gary L. Quay
We wanted to escape the omnipresent cloud cover in the Portland area, so we made a pilgrimage to the eastern Columbia Gorge, where the forecast predicted sun breaks. We were not disappointed. The Columbia River was calm, and the sun peaked through the clouds to the south.

I took a trip to Borrego Springs, California back in December. The geology surrounding it is amazing, and, best yet, it was warm. I didn’t need a jacket in the winter.

“The Charles Nelson House, Winter 2017.”
©2017 Gary L. Quay
Freezng rain is falling, the power is out, and there are strange noises outside. I don't have enough battery life in the laptop to hook up the external drive, so this evening I went for an older image that is stored on the internal drive. I take you to 2017, and a house near The Dalles, Oregon that has since burned down.
It's that kind of evening.

“The Padre and the Coyote.”
©2023 Gary L. Quay
I visited Borrego Springs California with family between the holidays, and we took a tour of some metal sculptures that I have never heard of, but apparently are mildly famous. I had a film camera along, and took this picture near twilight.
The statue is called "The Padre" and the nountain behind it is Coyote Mountain. It's part of the Santa Rosa Mountains of Southern California.
I like this kind of landscape because of how alien it is when compared to where I grew up in Central Pennsylvania, and to where I live now.

“Breitenbush Hot Springs Powerhouse, March 2007.”
©2007 Gary L. Quay
During a brief stay at Breitenbush Hot Springs, I took the opportunity to wander around with my Hasselblad. The weather was gray, but summer was on its way. I was testing out some Maco ORT 25. It seems to have the ability to deliver some punch to dull lighting. It was later being produced under the Efke label until its one-of-a-kind coating machine broke in 2012.
A couple of summers ago, Breitenbush was devastated by a wildfire. I’m not sure if this building survived.

“Chanticleer Point, November 2012.”
©2012 Gary L. Quay
The clouds were finally cooperating on one fine Tuesday in 2012. There are so many times when we have either total overcast, or blank, cloudless skies. At least, this seems to be the case when I have an opportunity to get out and take some pictures.
I used my 8" Cooke Anastigmat for this picture. I wanted to see how uncoated optics would render the clouds. They required a little burning in, but otherwise, they turned out just fine. It may have helped that I used a red filter.
The name reflects historic name for the viewpoint from which I took this picture. The subject of the image is Crown Point.
Camera: Senaca Camera City View 5x7.
Lens: 8" Cooke Anastigmat.
