VERNAL POOLS FUNERAL & BURIAL TRADITIONS
being a young colony, the VPC does not yet have a highly-developed religion and pantheon. because of this, they’ve not yet formed a defined method of vigil, but a tradition for funeral processions and burial is starting to strengthen.

VIGIL
upon a colonymate's death, their body is laid in the middle of the current camp for mourning
the cat’s family is to groom their body, weaving trinkets and other accessories into their pelt. they can utilize flowers, other plants, or feathers to hide any evidence of what killed them, or other unsightly wounds
their mentor/pupil, family, friends, and other cats close to the deceased are invited to sleep with them for the last time
at sunrise, a procession of the colony, led primarily by the deceased’s mentor/pupil and family, starts its way to the burial mound
the deceased is then buried atop the mound
the body is also buried with a bundle containing various grave goods, traditionally including a carved totem of their patron god, a feather of their family bird, and notable personal items of the deceased, such as accessories, games, or their favorite food
if there is no body for the deceased, their family bird is wrapped in a blanket of spanish moss (tillandsia usneoides) and is used instead. it is still weaved with momentos and given a burial bundle
this process also applies if a cat has gone missing and is assumed dead as well
BURIAL MOUNDS:
as you might’ve noticed, the VPC does not use a standard graveyard to home the dead. instead, they create a burial mound
each cat who dies during the reign of the current leading pair is buried together in the same mound
the leading pair is the last to be buried on each mound, for a new one is created with each new leading pair
the mounds are located between the two camps. they are visited every time the colony migrates between camps
at the moment, the colony is currently on its fourth burial mound, as estuary mangrovemumble and herbalist gatorchomp are its fourth leading pair. they will be buried atop it once they pass

Drew some kitties for an upcoming server! In order, their names are Eloise Cinderstar (female), Redwood Grottostar (nonbinary), and Alabaster Snowstar (male). These three are founding Starpaws (leaders)!
There's no link for it atm (unless you wanna help- feel free to DM me here if so!) but it's about three colonies! It's very Warriors-esque (hence the Warriors tag- I think Warriors fans may be interested (I myself am also one)) with some notable changes like a naming system similar to Tailchaser's Song.
Also, don't forget! Commissions are open! I haven't received any, so if you could reblog this that will be great!

What kind of cat is Herman Hermann, and which faction does he belong to?

Okay so I'll be honest I forgot about him lmao

You reminded me :D
This is Herman's design. He belongs to the Quimby Faction(which, if you haven't noticed, most people belong to because the other three are low key picky)!
He hasn't really talked about how his leg got amputated. All that's known in that a human found him on the side of the road right outside of Springfield. Some say it was a car, some say dogs.
He was taken in by the human, but he was never really considered himself a pet. Just a roaming cat who happened to have a place to eat and occasionally sleep. The humans dieing off didn't really affect him much. He also didn't see why it affected some of the others. If he catches a cat being upset he tells them to quit the crying and toughen up.
He hates kids, human or not. Can't stand them. He had a tendency to scratch any human child that dared try and pick him up.
That's all my pea sized brain can think of atm, so if I left anything out I'll probably reblog with extra info! Thanks for the question :) Feel free to send in more

i'll never say this publicly but honestly i think tigerstar had some valid ideas about having one big clan. obviously he was super wrong with all the violence and force, but one big clan could solve a lot of issues. No more border patrol fighting, more food for everyone during leaf-bare season, no drama involving cross-clan mates, etc etc. a lot of deaths could be avoided if we all took care of one another instead of fighting all the time

Honestly I don't know how I feel about this... each Clan is beautifully unique and has their own traditions, which would fade away if Clans were desolved altogether. But OP makes a valid point about less violence and food scarcity. I hate the idea of sending my kits off to become Warriors, only for them to die during a stupid argument about Sunningrocks. A pile of rocks is NEVER worth a cat's life, whether they are in your Clan or not. And we have lost lives like that before.

I agree! Traditions are important, but every medicine cat knows that working together saves lives. Sharing herbs can stop the spread of greencough, and sharing prey stops kits from crying from hunger. We really need a better system, because I can't cry myself to sleep another night, blaming myself for not having enough cobwebs to stop a kit from bleeding out in front of me.

howdy y’all! yes, i am working on posts—i’ve just been simply cursed with perfectionism since my birth like maleficent and aurora. for now, i shall share two family trees i’ve been drafting for different families in the yellowstone colonies.
the placeholder names of “fem” or “masc” are merely to denote the cat’s gender; they’ve yet to be properly named!
solid lines denote biological relationships, and dashed lines signify adoptive ones
the arrow above hawk’s name is to show there’s more family on his side of the tree! i just. couldn’t fit it all within my notes app argh 🙈
the numbers to the right of the tree are there to show the approximate age each cat would be at at the start of the story, if everyone listed was, hypothetically, still alive
names for some cats are subject to change! i’ve yet to compile an accurate, complete list of all geographically valid names for the yellowstone colonies, so some may be ecologically inaccurate

Thought I would show these critters as well
Meet Watcher and Sentry, the deities of the cats you saw in this post! The Watcher basically watches over the Great Beyond (this server's version of StarClan), and the Sentry is the one who guards the Rancid Horizon (basically the Dark Forest). They're mates, and they're needed because, well...
*looks at StarClan in the books* You know what you did.
These are redesigns/redraws as well, you'll see the older versions later on in this post.
