"son, i could move the sky for you"
~
so...midnight and sol in the rewrite... (more info below the cut!)
in the scorched ruins of a long abandoned ravine awaits an elderly badger. for seasons, midnight retraced the ancient claw-marks of those before this time; fading echoes of now forgotten spirits. every night she patrols the worn stone, accompanied only by the distant pelt of stars above her.
the low humming of wind bouncing off the gorge walls was scarcely broken--be it by a passing critter or occasional loner--but tonight, something was different.
she follows the shrill wailing--lumbering after it with more energy than she had showcased in moons--down the ragged cliff edge, and into the hollowed out stone. there lay a scrawny cat--a kitten. midnight's ears itch at it's mewling, and her throat tightens.
she reaches out a clawed paw, and pulls the shivering scrap towards herself. the kit whimpers still, but unscrews it's eyes. brilliant sunburnt irises burn into her own; and a warmth she had long been deprived melted the aches of age away--if only for a moment.
those pools of yellow observed her curiously. after a heartbeat, the child nuzzled deeper into her wiry coat.
how long had it been since held new life? how long had it been since was held by someone?
regardless of the answer, she couldnt let go now.
i love sad old people

“Should we be concerned?”
Hyrule’s question has Wars glancing up to follow the traveller’s gaze towards the fire, where a small ball of pink fluff lies facing away from everyone else. Legend, currently in the form of a rabbit, is curled tightly into himself. Warriors can see him trembling from here.
There’s a whine and Wolfie makes his way over from the other side of camp, moving slowly so as not to startle the other transformed hero. Legend doesn’t seem to notice.
There had been an incident earlier with Twilight’s shadow chrystal; the captain isn’t entirely sure what happened, but somehow both the rancher and the vet had been changed into animals. Wolfie they were familiar with, but the sudden appearance of a small pink rabbit had been a surprise to everybody. Legend had immediately refused to look at any of them, curling into himself with his ears pressed flat as if trying to hide in plain sight.
In any other circumstance Wars would tease and poke lighthearted fun, ruffling soft pink and getting snarky jabs in return. Right now, though, it’s clear it wouldn’t be taken well at all. Obviously this is something Legend hadn’t wanted anyone to know about, and a freak accident had outed that secret to everyone at once. Wars feels a stab of sympathy for how miserable he looks. No wonder he’s hiding.
Wolfie whines again and lowers himself to his belly to crawl forward and nose at the other. It takes a moment, but pink slowly unfurls to reveal a tiny, trembling nose and long ears that flick at every noise.
Legend stares at Wolfie with his dark eyes, so glittering and sharp even in this form, before he nudges his little face into the wolf’s side. Wolfie lets out a happy yip and wraps himself around him with a wag of his tail.
Legend gives a sound that’s surprisingly close to a sigh and settles close against dark fur. His trembling eases and then stops altogether as he’s surrounded by protective warmth.
Wars smiles at the sight and claps Hyrule on the back. “Everything’s just fine, traveller. They’ll be alright.”

“Bea.”
“Hm?” Beatrice grumbles, too close to sleep to keep from sounding grumpy.
“I’m cold.”
Ava sounds sheepish, unsure of herself in a way that Beatrice immediately aches to soothe. She turns to regard her bedmate.
(The singular bed in their Switzerland apartment had starred in many of their disagreements during their first week. Both of them refused to relegate the other to the narrow futon across the room—Beatrice because self-sacrifice was hammered into her cellular makeup and Ava because she couldn’t abide the idea of a too-tall Beatrice unable to fully lay flat on the lumpy cushion. In the end, stubbornness won and they agreed to share the bed, leaving a tenuous twenty centimeters of empty mattress between them. Twenty centimeters of which Beatrice was constantly and acutely aware.)
“I’m sorry to wake you,” Ava continues after a brief silence, “I know we have training early, I just… I can’t sleep. It’s too cold.”
The nervousness in Ava’s voice is unacceptable. Self-doubt in the Warrior Nun is unacceptable, Beatrice corrects. One of those truths urges her into alertness.
“It’s alright, Ava,” she offers with a yawn, “I understand.”
Working from memory, Beatrice calls up an image of their budget. She projects their next paychecks and expenses, factors in the potential for extra tips during the holiday weekend influx, and concludes they can afford to purchase an extra blanket at the flea market tomorrow. She had watched Ava steal the last available one—the scratchy wool thing thrown over the back of the couch—earlier this evening before bed.
“If we’re careful for the next week, tomorrow we can—”
“Canwemaybecuddle,” Ava blurts, interrupting Beatrice’s half-formed explanation. It’s supposed to be a question, Beatrice thinks, but the words sputter into the quiet midnight air like some sort of manic exclamation.
Sister Beatrice blinks. She breathes through the uncomfortably pleasant fluttering in her chest until she can consider the request rationally. Ava isn’t patient enough to await the deliberation.
“It’s just,” she begins, sounding increasingly panicked, “we don’t have any more blankets and my warm clothes are in the laundry and you’re always so hot—I mean, shit. I mean, that’s a survival tactic right? Huddling together for warmth? I saw it on a penguin documentary once.”
Ava’s logic is sound but Beatrice is too busy stifling a fond smile to say much of anything. Her silence drags on long enough that her bedmate whips her head over, wide-eyed and apologetic. Ava opens her mouth to backtrack, but in the diffuse lamplight her eyes catch on Beatrice’s lips wrapped tight around a swell of affection.
The worry slips away and a knowing grin transforms Ava’s expression. Ava doesn’t smother her fondness the way Beatrice does. No; it shines plain as day in her eyes as she mutters, “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you? Letting me talk in circles?”
Beatrice’s mouth pulls to one side and she allows a small chuckle to slip through her control. “Just a bit. You have quite a talent for it.”
Ava snorts and nudges Bea with her elbow. “Well sometimes I can’t help it. You’re silent brooding can be pretty intimidating, you know.”
“Brooding?” Beatrice frowns, affronted. “I wouldn’t call it—”
Ava’s laugh tinkles in the room and Beatrice’s mouth snaps shut.
“Don’t worry, Bea. It’s cute brooding.”
Beatrice’s cheeks heat and she’s grateful for the dim lighting as her eyes seek neutral territory on the ceiling.
Maybe I only run hot around you.
The thought catches Beatrice entirely by surprise and she’s wrestling madly with it when Ava’s hand brushes hers, a small but meaningful breach of the no-man’s-land between them. It’s immediately comforting.
“Hey, don’t worry about it if it makes you uncomfortable,” Ava entreats, all teasing gone from her voice. “We don’t need to—uh, touch or anything. I’ll be okay.”
“No,” Beatrice latches into Ava’s fingers before she can pull away. Her brain catches up to her and she clears her throat, loosens her unexpectedly urgent grip on Ava’s hand. “I mean. You’re right. Increased proximity is an effective tactic to maintain body temperature.”
Stupidly, she adds, “And yes, Emperor Penguins do it.”
She can practically hear Ava’s smirk. “Oh my god, Bea.” The smirk grows into a laugh and Beatrice lets the small blasphemy slide.
“Did you just tell me that I’m right?” Ava’s delight practically glows as Beatrice rolls her eyes. Maybe the Halo is enjoying this too. “I can’t believe it. Wow, that’s like—”
“Shut up and turn over so I can spoon you.”
Ava goes absolutely still at the interruption.
“Uh—wh—” Ava chokes a bit, clears her throat of it eventually. “What?” She finally manages, barely above a whisper.
Calmly, which is an effort all on its own, Beatrice explains.
“The most efficient way to exchange body heat between two people is to maximize physical contact.” Her face burns at the words, which Beatrice will dismiss as productive, all things considered. “Therefore, spooning is the optimal, ahem, position.”
Beatrice makes no mention of the other ways to enhance the exchange of body heat that decide to flash across her pure, untainted mind.
“Oh, okay. Yeah.” Ava agrees and quickly does as she’s told, turning away from Bea and onto her side.
Beatrice follows, muttering a thoughtless “good, just like that” before it occurs to her not to. Ava makes a muffled squeak that Beatrice furiously ignores.
Faced with the planes of Ava’s shoulders, a commonplace sight made extraordinary by the offer hanging between them, Beatrice pauses to take a breath.
There’s no denying the acute eagerness with which her body prepares to scoot closer. The pull towards Ava is magnetic and steady—stronger the closer Beatrice gets. But it’s also honest and peaceful—right in a way that threatens to drag Beatrice’s entire value system into the blinding harshness of questioning light.
Beatrice struggles against the ease with which she slides forward. She finds her soul and her faith with no foes to fight. It’s jarring to spend a lifetime steeling oneself for resistance only to encounter nothing to oppose. Nothing but love, pure and unassuming, seeping through every crevice in the weakening constructs of Beatrice’s life.
(Love is the twist that Sister Beatrice never expected, undeniably holy and propelling her towards Ava, centimeter by broken centimeter.)
Her hand hovers above Ava’s waist, hesitant to initiate a contact that seems liable to shatter everything. She sucks in a fortifying breath and begins to count backwards from ten.
“Bea?” Ava’s gentle concern slices through her at seven and something settles in her chest.
“I’m here,” Beatrice murmurs and drops her palm over the dip of Ava’s side with a decisive exhale. Ava breathes along with her and somehow that small synchronicity is what erases all remaining doubt. “I’m going to move closer now. Okay?”
“Okay,” Ava confirms.
Beatrice smiles and shuffles forward, aligning her front to Ava’s back before settling into the mattress behind her. She stops breathing completely as Ava shifts to accommodate their closeness. Not because of friction or anything so untoward, but because the perfection with which Ava’s body slots against hers has the power to break her.
There’s a debilitating effortlessness in the way Ava fits, backside nestled benignly in the cradle of Beatrice’s hips and shoulder blades pressed evenly to the expanse of her chest. Beatrice’s legs jerk forward and settle completely against the length of Ava’s.
Ava sinks languidly into the curve of Beatrice’s body. Her smaller frame makes it so Beatrice is wrapped around her in every way but one.
Beatrice’s hand still hovers, debating whether it can go where it wants and maintain plausible deniability. Ava decides for her, reaching swiftly for Beatrice’s wrist and bringing it to her chest before either of them can question it.
Her arm falls around Ava’s middle, snaking up through the Halo Bearer’s and into a tangle of their hands. In the spaces between her fingers, Beatrice feels the faint thump of Ava’s heart.
Ava twitches once and tucks her frigid toes between Beatrice’s feet with a huff. The sting of cold draws Beatrice’s attention to the gooseflesh prickling the skin of Ava’s arms.
“You are cold,” she breathes, unsure why she’s surprised. It’s absolutely involuntary how her hold on Ava tightens at the observation.
“Mm,” Ava answers. She wriggles, making herself small, and settles deeper in Beatrice’s arms. “Better now, though.”
Beatrice finds herself beaming, haloed in a warmth that’s a different kind of divine than the ring burning in Ava’s back. She takes stock of the moment, each sound and each breath, and discovers nothing at all out of place. She reaches for every point of contact between them, extending her awareness into her body, and finds it balanced, utterly relaxed.
Here with Ava, there is peace. Peace for every unsettled part of her. And that… that is something new indeed.
Beatrice lets herself tip forward, rests her forehead against the crown of Ava’s head.
“Glad I could help,” she whispers, tugging Ava closer as her heart lurches with the piercing truth of that statement.
“You always help, Bea,” Ava mumbles sleepily. “You’re the best. ‘S why I love you.”
Beatrice inhales sharply, inadvertently fills her lungs with the simple cleanliness of Ava’s shampoo. It calms her unsettlingly fast.
Her shaky exhale ruffles the ends of Ava’s hair.
“Goodnight Ava,” Beatrice says in place of the emotion that’s taking hold of her windpipe.
“Night,” comes the barely intelligible response.
In one more breath, Ava’s asleep.
Slowly, Beatrice lifts her chin. Carefully, carefully, her lips make contact with the softness of Ava’s hair. Beatrice sighs, pressing the slightest of kisses where she rests.
“I love you, too,” she mouths inaudibly in the safety of her hiding place. “More than you know.”
Ava shifts, sighs, and sinks into Beatrice once more.

POV: you’re a powerful dragon laid low by the common cold and forced to submit to smothering attention of your brothers.
Loved @bokettochild ‘s update to The Inner Hero. Sick-dragon Warriors was so excellent and hilarious to read, made all the better by Twilight’s attempts to herd him XD
Rabbit legend was the true star of the show tho, and I adored every description of Legend and Warrior’s interactions as humans and in their “beast” forms.

@skyward-floored I know you’ve been sick all week so I wrote you a little something to help cheer you up. It’s short and probably not wonderfully edited but I hope you get some joy from it anyway :)
——————————
“Up and at ‘em Captain!” Legend calls as he stomps down the hall. “The day’s wasting away!”
The sun is already high in the sky. The other heroes are already dressed and packed and well into eating their breakfast. Yet, the captain is still snoozing away, snug as a bug beneath his blankets.
Must be nice being able to sleep through all that ruckus, Legend thinks, grumpily.
Though, now that he ponders it, it is rather unlike Warriors to slumber on like this. Usually, he is one of the first to awaken. By the time anyone else rises, he is already washed and dressed and looking entirely too well-kept for someone who catapulted out of bed before even the sun dared peek over the horizon.
A small shred of worry worms its way past Legend’s careful defenses. But he pushes it aside as he steps into the doorway.
“Hey, pretty boy! Did you hear me?”
By all appearances, the bed is occupied solely by blankets. And save for a few sniffles, their occupant remains steadfastly silent. Frowning, Legend steps closer.
“Warriors? You alive in there?”
“Mmph,” groan the blankets.
Legend grasps the nearest edge and flings them off. A very miserable-looking Warriors blinks up at him.
“Vet?”
Legend winces. His voice is painfully hoarse. Speaking must be agonizing.
His eyes are glossy too, he sees now, and his cheeks unnaturally flushed. A layer of sweat coats his forehead and drags down his curls. When he pushes himself upward, the movement is accompanied by a violent shudder that nearly lands him back on the bed.
The captain presses his fingertips to the bridge of his nose.
“Sorry, is it time to get up? I-I didn’t realize…”
He trails off, blinking into the rays of sunlight that waft through the blinds. Panic streaks across his face.
“I overslept.”
“Yeah, you did.”
Legend puts a hand to his chest, pushing him back as he tries to get out of bed. He shivers beneath his touch, breath hitching.
“And it’s no wonder that you did. You look like crap, Wars. How long have you been sick?”
Warriors swallows, cringing as he does it.
“Don’t know.” He shrugs, weakly. “I haven’t felt well all week but I thought…I thought I was fine.”
His eyes widen.
“I’m gonna get everyone sick!”
“Well, yeah, probably. But we’ll be fine.”
Legend presses the palm of his hand to Warriors’ head, ignoring his weak attempts to shove him off.
“You’re burning up, captain. Lie back down.”
“But we-we need to get going…” Warriors looks up at him, eyes wide and pleading. “We were so close to the…we were so close…”
Legend sighs. “The monsters can wait. You need to rest.”
“Is everything alright in here?”
Time peeks around the door, now, a concerned expression on his face. When he catches sight of Warriors it deepens. In two strides, he is within the room.
“Captain, are you well?”
“He’s definitely not,” Legend says before Warriors can try and make excuses. “He’s sick as a dog.”
Time places a hand on Warriors’ forehead, then retracts it, a frown darkening his features.
“We will stay in the inn today. You must rest.”
“But Sprite…” Warriors begins. Time shakes his head.
“I’ll hear no arguments from the very man who forcibly snuggled me until I slept as a child.”
Legend snorts. “He did what?”
Time only smiles, his attention still on Warriors.
“Pushing on will only make you worse, captain. You would be the first to pause the journey if one of us were in your place. Let us take care of you.”
“Fine.” Warriors slouches, defeated. “Why’re you two so stubborn?”
Legend grins.
“You think we’re bad? Just wait until you see the others.” He winks. “Lemme go get ‘em.”
As he turns on his heel, Legend sees Warriors sink further into the bed. His grin grows wider.
Get comforted, captain.
Less than half of an hour later, the bedroom is swarmed by eight heroes, all armed with illness-fighting supplies. Sky and Wild, come bearing warm soup.
(“It’s the best for a sore throat,” Sky says with a smile and Wild nods, “yup, I cooked a big batch too, so you’ll have plenty of it.”)
Hyrule offers healing potions. Wind and Four bring armfuls of blankets.
(“Did you two raid every house in Castle Town?” Time asks in disbelief as he takes the small heroes’ bundles. Wind grins.)
(“Basically.”)
Twilight brings fresh water from the spring just outside of town, said to have healing properties…and also a stray cat to keep the captain company.
(“You sure that’s for his benefit?” Legend asks, narrowing his eyes as the rancher sets the animal on Warriors’ lap. Twilight just grins.)
Soon, Warriors is lying down once more, wrapped snugly in what Wind dubs a “blanket burrito,” with a belly full of soup and a cat on his legs.
Time brushes his bangs out of his eyes and places a cool cloth on his forehead. Warriors sighs at the touch.
“Are you feeling a little better now?” Wind asks, eyes wide with concern. Oblivious to the captain’s warnings about germs, he has managed to fit himself in between the eternal blankets and the cat, cuddled against Warriors’ side.
Not that the knight seems to mind overly much, now that all is said and done. And as he settles on the end of the bed, Legend can’t help thinking he looks glad to have the company.
Warriors nods, eyes drooping.
“Yeah, I’m better, sailor.” He sends the heroes a tired grin. “Thanks to all of you.” His gaze flicks to Legend. “Especially, you vet.”
Legend’s cheeks heat and he looks down, waving a dismissive hand.
“Ah, no big deal. I’m not so mean as to let you die in here all alone and snotty and miserable.”
Warriors chuckles and closes his eyes. “So, you decided to suffocate me with blankets instead?”
Legend shrugs, a grin playing on his lips. “What can I say? I’m merciful.”
The blankets in question look rather comfortable and he decides to lay down upon them. He’s not the only one either. All of the heroes have drifted over now, cuddling up on a bed not made for nine men and boys. But they make do. And Warriors seems to melt in their embrace.
Legend smiles at the peaceful look on the captain’s face as he drifts off. He guesses even someone like the pretty boy needs a break once in a while. And — he chuckles as Wind and the cat compete for space — some snuggles too.

Time: I do not have favorites
Warriors: *deadpan* so Twilight and Hyrule are nothing to you?
Time: Of course not! But I treasure all the boys equally!
Warriors: So you would also carry Sky around and spend extensive one one time with Legend?
Time: ......
Warriors: Ad you would willingly let Wild rat about his interests to you?
Time: *progressively more awkward silence*
Warriors: Pities sakes, just admit you have favorites
Time: I have no favorites
Warriors: *sighs*

If Pinestar was the Mi of his kits, why didn’t he try to take any of them with him when he left? Like Brightsky keeping some of her litter. He knew how the clans were, he was specifically leaving to get away from it, why did he choose to leave his children behind?
It wasn't a choice. Brightsky gave birth in the home she bolted to; Pinestar wasn't going to be allowed to take his children unless he snuck out with them.
He wishes he did something, when he sees what became of his son. But he tried to be brave when he left, announcing that he would not be coming back, and where he would be going.
He thought that was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, no one else appreciated it the way he hoped they would.
If he DID though, ThunderClan would not have allowed that. They see it as kidnapping. Being Mi doesn't mean you're allowed to do literally anything you want, especially if you do have a Ba involved.
In cases of handoffs (surrogacy, secret halfclan kits being given to their other parent, etc) it's actually SUPER important you do it before 1 moon, so you can pass the disappearance off as a fading kit. There are no funerals thrown for fading kits besides the Mi and any Ba quietly burying the body, so this is the time where you smuggle the baby out.
So you need all the Ba on board with such a handoff, in addition. Cloudtail is an example of that actually! When Brightheart surrogates, he is fully aware of how many are ACTUALLY faders and who is receiving their child.
Tigerkit was like 3-ish moons when Pinestar hit da bricks, unfortunately there wasn't a way he could take him along... plus it wouldn't quite make sense with how he was having nightmares about murdering his son.

Like to think that, as a ex-kittypet, firestar its a pretty touchy cat, like, he likes physical contact a lot and does it quite often
he’s so huggy. he’s the huggiest hugger. one time, graypaw was beckoning firepaw over to share tongues, but firepaw just rubbed against his side real hard, purred, flopped on the ground, and kept purring.
as yellowfang dies, she licks his head real hard and he just gets choked up bc it brings up a memory of his mom, the only memory he has of her.
cloudtail is super similar, and fireheart punishes his apprentice for disrespect with cuddle bans.
as fireheart and longtail become friends, fireheart gets super touchy. he rubs and leans on longtail and intertwines their tails, and longtail is SO flustered but he thinks it’s platonic because fireheart acts similarly with graystripe.
as soon as squirrelkit and leafkit don’t need sandstorm’s milk, she leaves the nursery and firestar replaces her :3 he was there the whole time, but yknow. he LOVES sitting there all day with kits cuddling him. HIS kits, can you believe it? once those two are apprenticed, firestar mopes a bit from lack of cuddles.
after his kits leave the nursery, firestar refuses (can’t) sleep without another cat, usually longtail.
leafpool was always a little closer to firestar than squirrelflight was, despite firestar’s wishes, so they have cute little moments sitting together and grooming each other, rubbing their heads together and purring.
even once his family is full-grown, they all pile in the leader’s den from time to time to cuddle firestar. this continues until his death — so his grandbabies, the three, get to join in! bramblestar does not continue this tradition in the leader’s den, but squirrelflight’s kids still cuddle her. firestar passed on the cuddle gene.
in starclan, firestar is the patron saint of cuddle puddles because i said so???
i definitely want legendary cats to be known as “patron” of something, and firestar definitely will be one, and it will definitely have to do with love.
