No commentary, sample gameplay of the unreleased game Warhammer 40000: Dark Crusaders. Running under DOSBox-X.

This game, to be published by Mindscape, was likely scrapped at the very last minute, as the build you are witnessing from March 1996 was even sent to magazines for review, and even some reviews hit the magazines!

Theoretically this was meant to be a squad shooter where you could issue orders to your teammates, but I don't know how to handle that. We are left with a dark corridor shooter, with very frustrating difficulty, and a very dated game for 1996... As Duke Nukem 3D was already out and Quake was 3 months away by the time this build was compiled.

Este juego, sería publicado por Mindscape, fue seguramente descartado en el último minuto, ya que la build que estais presenciando de Marzo del 96 incluso fue enviada a las revistas para análisis, e incluso dichos análisis llegaron a ser publicados!

Teóricamente se supone que iba a ser un shooter de escuadrón donde podrías darle órdenes a tus compañeros, pero no tengo ni idea de cómo funciona. Nos quedamos un shooter pasillero oscuro, con dificultad muy frustrante, y un juego muy anticuado para 1996... Ya que Duke3D ya estaba en la calle y faltaban 3 meses para Quake cuando esta build fue compilada.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun

Boltgun was a fine game. The guns mostly felt good (the shotgun and plasma gun being the most obvious exceptions), and the movement was satisfyingly responsive and quick.

The encounter design started feeling samey fairly quickly, with the purge sections generally dragging the game down for me. Similarly, most of the levels felt alike, and I was ready for the game to be over about halfway in. I'd only recommend this to someone if they'd run out of retro FPS games and didn't want to dive into Doom wads.

Boltgun is very good. The Ultramarine you play as, Caedo, will pull out a Codex Astartes to read if you go afk. There is a taunt button that exists just so he can talk mad shit at enemies and recite litanies. The bolter makes people explode spectacularly. Pink horrors split into blue horrors when you kill them. The game is a side sequel to Space Marine.

Also, Caedo is voiced by Rahul Kohli, and that’s just brilliant

I have a powerful need for Malum Caedo to be referenced, and referenced a LOT, in future Warhammer 40K material.

I need this man to be spoken of in hushed tones by other Space Marines. I want the Black Legion to hiss at the utterance of his name. I want Guilliman and Marneus fucking Calgar to fucking honor this guy in a public square on Macragge.

Malum Caedo is a Space Marine who has basically pulled off, single handedly, the kind of battlefield prowess it was once thought only Primarchs or the Emperor His-Goddamn-Self could have accomplished.

Give that Marine a 50 foot tall solid gold statue. Devote a whole ass library to his legendary badassitude.

Make Caedo unforgettable, a legendary hero of the Imperium, a memory to inspire every Marine, from every chapter, who comes after him.

And when he dies, he better die in single combat with a Chaos God or something -- pretty sure nobody else could take him down.
