Not HP related, but a mere observation/lament: I'm planning and presenting at an academic conference next month and I'm the ONLY female scholar (other than the keynote speaker) presenting.
WHY IS ACADEMIA SUCH A SAUSAGE FEST?!
(ok, why is MY branch of academia so filled with dudes?)

I think there’s something to be said for the fact that I used to dread presentations when I was younger but now plan to go out of my way to sign myself up for them so I can improve my public speaking. Me from not even two years ago would’ve never. But now ?? The more the merrier let me at them

You know that time in the comics when the Doctor is so depressed, he shuts off the lights, turns on an interrogation spotlight, locks himself in the console room, and argues with a bunch of judgmental shadow-figures resembling his past incarnations?
And all the TARDIS' lights go out and her interior becomes a maze to keep his companions out of the console room, all from her psychic connection with the Doctor (“moodbleed”)?
And his companions are left wandering in circles for two days as the air goes “stale,” not knowing where he is but thinking the worst, while he hallucinates in a dark room?
...because I'm thinking again about the times this definitely happened when he was with the Ponds.

One of these days I will write about the nuances of The Black Church and how it acted both as a force for good; providing food, shelter, and community to those in need from slavery onward, and as a force for destruction, actively treating drug addicts and LGBT people as diseases and cutting them off from that sanctuary. I should do it at my most powerful (Now during BHM) but alas.....

MEETING IS DONE. He said I am definitely moving forward. I have to have a meeting with the other grad students in the center, and they have right of refusal, so if they don't like me I will not be admitted to the program. That will probably be next week.

attending a conference, having your own hotel room, meeting new people, academic banter over a beer or two or three: pure bliss
having to present at a conference: pain, suffering, unbearable embarrassment etc.

also i have probably said this before but i think faculty need to stop telling students that they shouldn’t go to graduate school. yes students should have the information they need to make the decision (including info about the low stipends, the not-so-great culture of many graduate programs, the vanishingly small number of stable academic jobs, etc). but i’ve always felt like some students are going to hear that and think “well, it won’t be me, i’ll work hard and beat the odds!” (typically your well-off students who have a lot of social & navigational capital and an assured sense of belonging in higher ed spaces), while other students are going to hear it and think “i wonder if they’re just saying that because they think i’m not cut out for graduate study.”

fucking around: sending in long-shot applications (with almost an entire GPA point below their minimum) to both of the relevant honors and pre-graduate programs I know would look good on me in the future, pleading my case to be allowed in anyway
finding out: actually getting accepted into both of them and adding 7 honors level credit hours to the term that starts in less than three weeks, and a ton of work through the summer/rest of my time in undergrad
