Just indulging another of my passions editing a few of my photos of the fairground at the Bristol Harbour Festival earlier this year and publishing now as a reminder that I'm still around and plugging away.

Most of my photos from the festival are now on Flickr, but I am holding back on publishing too widely until I have had chance to attend to the video shoots I had taken, but which have not received much attention as much on account of time constraints as having to deal with various tech issues, but this is just one of a few recent events which I have recorded on video and which I hope to publish on YouTube once all shots have been edited.

Regarding the single frontman Kiran Roy says, “‘Waltzer’ always makes me think of Robert Eggars film The Lighthouse. The isolation and spiralling madness of the film really echoes with this song. I guess it's mainly about the fog of depression. It’s a kind of focus lens on my lowest and darkest thoughts, as well as a reflection of people I love and care about who have themselves battled with these kinds of things.”

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers Live Preview: 6/27, Sleeping Village, Chicago

On their third album Nightroamer (Thirty Tigers), Sarah Shook is back in the ditches. Backed by their longtime band The Disarmers, over swinging country, honkytonk burners, doo wop, and pop, Shook reflects on themselves as much as the faults of their romantic partners, giving them the empathy to realize we all fail to reach the standards we set for ourselves. “Empty promises are just dirty damn lies,” Shook sings to introduce the album on “Somebody Else”; apart from being a great potential campaign slogan, it’s a look at a series of abusive monogamous relationships Shook found themselves in, but also their unfortunate penchant for finding and seeking toxicity. The multiple perspectives pervade Nightroamer and prevent it from becoming an album of mere country kiss-offs. 

Take the swinging “No Mistakes”. “I swear I won’t take you for granted / I get I don’t deserve demandin’,” Shook deadpans. For every barb thrown, they take a step inward. Even on a song like “Please Be A Stranger”, a plea to an ex-lover to stay away, even the sharpness of Eric Peterson’s electric guitar contrasts the softness of Phil Sullivan’s pedal steel, like a mirror into the complexity of feelings post-breakup. It’s this sense of perspective that allows Shook to go for it on a song like “If It’s Poison”, a hopeful song about potential love, while still maintaining realism. “Love don’t always gotta have a bitter taste,” Shook sings, clarifying, “If it’s poison, baby, we will know.” Their past experiences with addiction and depression allow them to have sympathy with people experiencing it now on “If It Doesn’t Change Anything”. An the inherent depth of timbre of Shook’s voice--sounding like they’re longing even when they’re sneering--is a key element in making otherwise cliché affirmations sound authentic. “Don’t know where this road gonna take me,” Shook sings on the country waltzing title track, “But I’d rather die than ever turn back.”

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers headline a Logan Square Arts Festival aftershow tonight at sleeping village. The band includes Shook on vocals and guitar, Peterson on electric guitar, Aaron Oliva on bass, Jack Foster filling in for Will Rigby on drums, and Adam “Ditch” Kurtz filling in for Sullivan on pedal steel. Waltzer, the project of local singer-songwriter Sophie Sputnik, opens. Tickets are $18. Doors at 8 PM CST, show at 8:30. Please bring proof of vax and a mask!

Caleb doesn't EASILY get cold for obvious reasons. Fire has always been his domain, or well...he's not going down that road right now. There is, however, a very lovely fire crackling in the fire place, illuminating the room, and he's curled up beneath a blanket with the other, no clothes required. Though he supposes to would help with the warmth, not that he minds.

basically where i live (little village sort of thing) every year on the first monday of october there’s a fair with loads of rides and every year i go on the same two about ten times and then just leave

why did i suddenly get the inescapable urge to go to a fair??
