For someone from a time so far into the future that any languages we recognize today are little more than relics of a long, long gone time. Kokabiel's had a pretty alright time adjusting to the language of the modern day.
It helped that his mother studied the humanity before the Radiation Wars, that he grew up with stories of old earth, a childhood of wanting to know as much of that bygone era as she'd tell him. Bits and pieces of humanity's old tongues taught to him from his curiosity.
Another reason, one he should've picked up on but only realized once feet hit the concrete of the present day was that, well...the languages of his time had to have come from somewhere, right?
The Orokin language, all the others that came from it after their fall. All descended from English, no matter how distantly. The tiniest thread he could pull on to bring the unfamiliar place and time, its words and sounds into clearer focus. Still trying to understand the time he was dropped into but at least.
at least he could speak. He could understand, ask, anything instead of fumbling silent in a timeline so removed from what he knew.

Professor Emeritus Peter Schiller, a pioneer researcher of the visual system, dies at 92
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Peter Schiller, professor emeritus in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and a member of the MIT faculty since 1964, died on Dec. 23, 2023. He was 92.
Born in Berlin to Hungarian parents in 1931, Schiller and his family returned to Budapest in 1934, where they endured World War II; in 1947 he moved to the United States with his father and stepmother. Schiller attended college at Duke University, where he was on the soccer and tennis teams and received his bachelor’s degree in 1955. He then went on to earn his PhD with Morton Weiner at Clark University, where he studied cortical involvement in visual masking. In 1962, he came to what was then the Department of Psychology at MIT for postdoctoral research. Schiller was appointed an assistant professor in 1964 and full professor in 1971. He was appointed to the Dorothy Poitras Chair for Medical Physiology in 1986 and retired in 2013.
“Peter Schiller was a towering figure in the field of visual neurophysiology,” says Mriganka Sur, the Newton Professor of Neuroscience. “He was one of the pioneers of experimental studies in nonhuman primates, and his laboratory, together with those of Emilio Bizzi and Ann Graybiel, established MIT as a leading center of research in brain mechanisms of visual and motor function.”
Recalls John Maunsell, the Albert D. Lasker Distinguished Service Professor of Neurobiology at the University of Chicago, who did postdoctoral research with Schiller, “Peter was the boldest experimentalist I’ve ever known. Once he engaged with a question, he was unintimidated by how exacting, intricate, or extensive the required experiments might be. Over the years he produced an impressive range of results that others viewed as beyond reach.”
Schiller’s former PhD student Michael Stryker, the W.F. Ganong Professor of Physiology at the University of California at San Francisco, writes, “Schiller was merciless in his criticism of weakly supported conclusions, whether by students or by major figures in the field. He demanded good data, real measurements, no matter how hard they were to make.”
Schiller’s research spanned multiple areas. As a graduate student, he designed an apparatus, the five-field tachitoscope, that rigorously controlled the timing and sequence of images shown to each eye in order to study visual masking and the generation of optical illusions. With it, Schiller demonstrated that several well-known optical illusions are generated in the cortex of the brain rather than by processes in the peripheral visual system.
Seeking postdoctoral research, he turned to his father’s friend, Hans-Lukas Teuber, who had just accepted an offer to be founding head of the Department of Psychology at MIT. Schiller learned how to make single-unit electrophysiological recordings from the brains of awake animals, which added a new dimension to his studies of the circuitry and mechanisms of cortical processing in the visual system. Among other findings, he saw that brightness masking in the visual system was caused by interactions among retinal neurons, in contrast to the cortical mechanism of illusions.
In 1964, Schiller was appointed assistant professor. Soon after, he embarked on productive collaborations with Emilio Bizzi, who had just arrived in the Department of Psychology. Schiller and Bizzi, who is now an Institute Professor Emeritus, shared an interest in the neural control of movement; they set to work on the oculomotor system and how it guides saccades, the rapid eye movements that center objects of interest in the visual field. They quantified the firing patterns of motor neurons that generate saccadic eye movements; paired with studies of the superior colliculus, the brain center that guides saccades in primates, and the frontal eye fields of the cortex, they outlined a fundamental scheme for the control of saccades, in which one system identifies targets in the visual scene and another generates eye movements to direct the gaze toward the target.
Continuing his dissection of visual circuitry, Schiller and his colleagues traced the connections that two different types of retinal cells, known as parasol cells and midget cells, send from the retina to the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus. They discovered that each cell type connects to a different area, and that this physical segregation reflects a functional difference: Midget cells process color and fine texture while parasol cells carry motion and depth information. He then turned to the ON and OFF channels of the visual system — channels originating in different types of retinal neurons: some which respond to the onset of light, others that respond to the offset of light, and others that respond to both on and off. Building on earlier work by others, and inspired by recent discoveries of ways to pharmacologically isolate ON and OFF systems, Schiller and several of his students extended the previous studies to primates and developed an explanation for the evolutionary benefit of what seems at first like a paradoxical system: that the ON/OFF system allows animals to perceive both increments and decrements in contrast and brightness more rapidly, a beneficial attribute if those shifts, for instance, represent the approach of a predator.
At the same time, the Schiller lab delved further into the role of various parts of the cortex in visual processing, especially the areas known as V4 and MT, later steps in visual processing pathways. Through single-neuron recordings and by making lesions in specific areas of the brain in the animals they studied, they revealed that area V4 has a major role in the selection of visual targets that are smaller or have lower contrast compared to other stimuli in a scene, an ability that, for example, helps an animal unmask a camouflaged predator or prey. Strikingly, he showed that many variations in images that are important for perception have a delayed influence on the responses of neurons in the primary visual cortex, indicating that they are produced by feedback from higher stages of visual processing.
Schiller’s many significant contributions to vision science were recognized with his election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007, and, in his home country, he was made an honorary member of the Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in 2008.
Schiller’s legacy is also evident in his students and trainees. Schiller counted more than 50 students and postdocs who passed through his lab in its 50 years. Four of his trainees have since been elected to the National Academy of Sciences: graduate students Larry Squire and Stryker, and postdocs Maunsell and Nikos Logothetis.
His mentorship also extended to faculty colleagues, recalls Picower professor of neuroscience Earl Miller: “He generously took me under his wing when I began at MIT, offering invaluable advice that steered me in the right direction. I will forever be grateful to him. His mentorship style was not coddling. It was direct and frank, just like Peter always was. I remember early in my nascent career when I was rattled by finding myself in a scientific disagreement with a senior investigator. Peter calmed me down, in his way. He said, ‘Don’t worry, controversy is great for a career.’ But he quickly added, ‘As long as you are right; otherwise, well …’
Schiller’s creative streak did not just influence his scientific thinking; he was an accomplished guitar and piano player, and he loved building complex and abstract sculptures, many of them constructed from angular pieces of colored glass. He is survived by his three children, David, Kyle, and Sarah, and five grandchildren. His wife, Ann Howell, died in 1999.

The Anthropocene/Conservation Cont.
Individuals across a variety of species alter their environments (e.g., beavers build dams, birds build nests, and earthworms physically/chemically alter soil) in a process called “niche construction.” Humans excel at this kind of activity and often participate in ways that “[use] phenomenal amounts of energy” [1, p. 28]. Unfortunately, this often results in “collateral consequences for climate, species diversity, and landscapes” [1, p. 30]. In response to the acceleration and accumulation of these consequences, it has been proposed that we have left the Holocene and entered into a new geological age called the “Anthropocene.”
Among other things, the Anthropocene is “a tool with which to focus attention on the current role of Homo sapiens in altering the Earth as a whole, and is a shorthand descriptor of that phenomenon” [1, p. 27]. It has become central to many analyses of human-animal relations and has called for us to do away with dualistic thinking of nature/society—with nature existing firmly outside the sphere of human society [2]. Rutherford, for example, has stated that “for all of its conceits around the importance of humans to the stories of the earth, it does invite a recognition that the world only operates via entanglement” [3, p. 215].
In light of this, I would like to acknowledge a study of mammalian movement in response to anthropogenic activity. Tucker et al. have determined that anthropogenic activities are "not only causing the loss of habitat and diversity, but also [affect] how animals move through fragmented and disturbed areas" [4, p. 9; see also 5-8]. Mammalian movements were typically two-to-three times smaller in areas with comparatively high instances of human presence compared to the same movements in areas with lower instances of human presence [4, p. 9]. This was attributed to both (1) an "individual-behavioral effect, where individuals alter their movements relative to" human activity, and (2) "a species-occurrence effect, where certain species that exhibit long-range movement" change their behavior to no longer reside in areas with high instances of human presence [4, pp. 11-12]. In terms of conservation, the authors conclude that animal movements should be considered a key conservation metric and that the goal should be maintaining landscape permeability [4, p. 13].
While most nations have some kind of endangered species legislation in place to prevent the loss of biodiversity, the majority of current conservation policies, practices, and conceptual frameworks are ill-suited to the Anthropocene because they were created "before there was widespread awareness of the unprecedented pace and magnitude of environmental change caused by humans" [9, p. 107]. Kareiva and Fuller recommend that we should instead be anticipating future impacts and "establishing goals that [reflect] the best science as to what is feasible in the future" [9, p. 108]; in short, a review and potential overhaul of current practices and/or conceptual frameworks because "nature is not a business, nor should it be run as one" [9, p. 111].

TL;DR:
Humans are niche constructors who greatly alter the environment
The degree to which anthropogenic alterations occur has led to the suggestion that we have left the Holocene and entered the Anthropocene
The Anthropocene is a central concept in contemporary human-wildlife analyses and invites a recognition of entanglement
Conservation practices, etc. may need an overhaul to account for the degree of anthropogenic impact on wildlife/the environment

trying to.......not turn off but definitely LEASH my academic brain now that i’m doing this research exclusively for use in creative projects and not for academic papers has been. an interesting challenge.
for instance: there’s a protective spell for children translated in ‘in the bathhouse at midnight’ that i was thinking of drawing on pieces of, but there wasn’t as much discussion of it as i wanted, particularly given that a mention of returning to your “wonderful homeland” at the end struck me as not quite right for russian folk magic. so i checked the footnotes for the russian source, which turned out to be an essay by aleksandr blok, ‘the poetry of charms and spells’. the footnote also noted that same issue i had with it, and mentioned that blok didn’t cite his source for the spell. so i went and found the essay, and the original phrase was (in accusative, but in nominative would be) “родина славная,” which i’d actually translate as “glorious homeland” which - absolutely yes, does not seem like something that would have been originally in the spell, if indeed there even WAS an original spell and this isn’t entirely a creation of blok or one of his contemporaries.
but then the question becomes: how much does that matter, for my purposes? most of the ritual leading up to that end bit does line up with themes of russian magic, which i’m assuming is why w.f. ryan chose to include it in the book in the first place, despite it not being entirely verifiable. and if i and ryan both recognize that, then what are the chances that this character -- a woman who grew up in the soviet union, who studied literature, who holds these folk beliefs -- would come up with a similar ritual organically, or would at some point come across that blok essay, recognize those same elements of that spell, and draw upon it later in life?
and of course none of that is even stuff that would be mentioned in the story i’m writing. but i gotta go through that every time to figure out what WILL be mentioned.

Pics:
1 & 2. Photos of Willis George Emerson, mystery man.
3 & 4. Covers for the story in question. Note that the right pic shows a ruined house - with a sort of castle behind it! Yet, the left pic is that of a vibrant city.
1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.
In 1908, just 2 years after Lovecraft printed his science article, Willis G. Emerson published his sci-fi/fantasy novel "The Smoky God."
This is supposedly a 'true' account of a Norwegian fisherman & his father sailing their sloop thru a North polar entrance & on into the Earth's interior!
They spend 2 years in a strange under ground 'Eden,' encountering giants, a high priest, monsters & lost races that speak Sanskrit!!
A dim, smoky sun lights up this world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pics: You've got to love the inclusion of interior art in these old books. It's not the greatest of pics, but, it does help to accept the plot's weirdness...
1. Playing "dodge ball" between North Pole icebergs.
2. Meeting the High Priest who lives in 'Eden.'
3. Avoiding loud, giant elephants!
4. Lucky to sight a passing whaler.
5. Another cover for this story.
Plot: Their original motive was a hunt for ivory. But, it became a quest for the Nordic Gods!
Once in the Inner World, the common motif is the gigantic size of every thing. From the plants to the animals - all are immense.
Showing its superiority, the unnamed civilization here uses gold as a mere decorative metal & not for finance!
Capitalism is 'below' these people.
Emerson credits these folk with quite advanced arts & sciences - including astronomy!
The hero thinks the sun is actually an electrical cloud mass...
Whatever this sun is, it's regularly 'eclipsed' - every 12 hours. So, they experience night as well.
(I guess a studying their 'sun' could be called 'astronomy.' But, that 'star' was also worshiped, so their 'astronomy' should have a more religious tone!)
This civilization is still a pastoral society dedicated to agriculture & the arts. They've 'temples' for music, hill side vineyards & valley grain fields...
There's a long explanation of how their monorail runs, that's so inconsistent, it still baffles modern readers!
(Fly wheels & control of air pressure & gravity all somehow relate to the monorail's speed...)
The Inner World folk speak with each other, no matter what the distance, via "air currents."
(Radio?)
Weird Bit: For some obscure reason, the High Priest lives in a place called 'Eden.' This is also the site where the Biblical rivers of the Euphrates, Pison, Gihon & Hiddekel actually flow from...
They learn that the Inner World folk can live up to 800 years old!!
Olaf & his father even get to explore trees that grow up to a 1,000 feet!
(Sequoias?!)
Then, rather abruptly, Olaf's 'visit' just ends...
The fishermen leave - thru the South Pole! But, only Olaf survives to return home - due to a timely whaling ship.
The story ends like it began: asserting the tale's 'truth' & adding to Olaf's development as a type of hero.
(This is a kind of 2nd-hand plot device, where the 'presenter' of the story isn't the 'true' writer, was widely used by many writers.
This trope was also used by Lovecraft. Just check out his "Call of Cthulhu" for 'proof.' Luckily, it's not a popular literary device nowadays.)
Criticism: This tale adds little to the Hollow Earth genre. But, is a compact retelling of certain Inner World ideas.
This genre's civilizations are never equal to ones on the surface. They're either low tech & primal. Or, far more advanced.
This story follows the latter trope.
From the onset, Emerson distances himself from the tale - it's Olaf's tale to tell.
Yet, Emerson is also responsible for presenting the work as legit! He uses excerpts from W.F. Warren, Sir John Barrow & Robert E. Peary to backup the story's approach.
Much space is used to set up the 'fact' of a Hollow Earth & Olaf's credibility.
For instance, the tale took a long time to be published - because Olaf was supposedly institutionalized, in an asylum, for many years!
Just for trying to 'share' his story...
Finally, Olaf's dying confession elicits sympathy - as dying people "don't lie with their final breaths."
Author: There seems to be little info on W.G. Emerson's life, so the following summary will have to suffice.
Emerson was a lawyer (in 1886), a Chi Town newspaper man, a Republican Party promoter, a politician, a Western writer(!) & even a criminal!!
But, Emerson quickly lost all interest in the Law & moved to Kansas. There, he became part of the Republican Party.
Then, moving West, Emerson built the North American Copper Company & the town of Encampment. Both are situated in Wyoming.
Crimes: Emerson is known to have been involved in several mining & stock frauds.
But, Emerson also committed major fraud with his small Emerson Motor Company. He sold cars that were actually 'disguised' Ford vehicles!
(Sigh. These Republicans.)

Only God lifts men, quit being afraid – Believers Digest
Tumblr media
Only God lifts men, quit being afraid… “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.” Isaiah 50:7. That you’re surrounded by many doesn’t mean you’re supported and that you’re deserted by people doesn’t mean you have no help. See, this thing is a mystery. God sometimes allows many to leave you when His glory is about to hit home, but you can mess this up if you despair of life and feel discouraged 💔😭😔 from God when(not if) this period of being left alone kicks in. Humans don’t lift us, God does. The presence of humans is precious only when preceded by God’s presence and validation. You will definitely be able to deal with your demons and wrestle with your angel when left alone. Don’t seek to be aloof from others, but when it happens against all odds, take it on the chins with gusto and face God squarely for once in your life! “So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.” Genesis 32:24. There’s a dawning of a new day coming on you and me in Jesus' name. Amen. Face God: Sometimes when I wonder how people like PASTOR W.F KUMUYI of Deeper Life, Pastor Chris of Christ Embassy, and Dr. D.K. Olukoya of MFM rose against the backdrop of being unconventional and almost loathed by the body of believers, I tremble at what God can do! Truly, what God cannot do, does not exist! God has made a way, Jesus Christ is the way and the Holy Spirit is showing us the way through in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. God is good! REVIEW
Catawba Falls by W.F. Ranew
Red Farlow Mysteries #6
Nearing 70 but not slowing down, Red Farlow begins this pro bono murder investigation while in town for a summer camp’s administrative board meeting. Two male college students, counsellors for the summer, are missing when Red arrives. Having been a counsellor decades ago, he is soon on trails with the search team following paths he once tramped long ago. His memories of those long-gone days intertwine with the current case as it moves from missing to murdered young men and increases to multiple murders with a sinister serial killer on the loose.
What I liked:
* Red: retired Bureau of Georgia Bureau of Investigation, husband, private investigator, attended summer camp where some of the murders took place, puzzle solver, follows clues, has a network of friends in the area, tenacious, team player, motivated, loving husband, teen in the sixties
* Being able to relate to the summer camp counsellor reminiscences having been a camp counsellor in the sixties myself
* The myth of Boojum and how it tied into the story
* The close friendships that lasted decades – at least for red – and wondering why my time as a counsellor did not provide the same
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* Finding out the motivation for the multiple murders and the eventual solution of the cases
* The surprises, twists, and turns – and finding out new information as it came along
* The teamwork and effort exerted to bring down more than one evil person
* Catching up with Red and hearing a bit about his earlier years
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that there are people in the world as evil and amoral as the ones in this story
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
BLURB

On arrival, he discovers two camp counselors have been found in the woods, hacked to death. Red’s investigation soon widens with more mysterious deaths, one of them a close friend. Far-right extremist Troy Unsworthy knows the hills and hollows after a lifetime of growing up in these mountains. Red soon learns all the victims are connected to Unsworthy in the years leading up to a deadly auto accident which put him in prison. When he learns Unsworthy was released just before the counselors’ deaths, Red goes into the mountains. His trek requires sure-footedness over rocky terrain and old-growth forest as he explores caves with endless tunnels, shafts, and deep-water pools searching for his suspect. But, did Unsworthy really murder these people, or should Red turn his attention to other suspects? Red treads a treacherous path on his quest to find the killer and bring him to justice.

He founded the Peoples Temple, a quasi-Christian commune in Jonestown, Guyana, where he often told his followers that they would all die and live happily together hereafter. In November 1978, fearing government attack on the settlement after its members had killed an American congressman, Jones ordered a mass murder-suicide. 909 died, including 304 children. Jones shot himself dead. Jim Jones was such an evil man, “who seeketh only rebellion” and the “cruel messenger” of death was sent to him. We have the list of such men in our reading today: those who mock the poor, the wicked liar given to pride, unforgiving friends, fools, companions of those who reject wisdom, as well as contentious people. They are contrasted with the godly who are quiet and meek servants, disciples enriched with “excellent speech”, who have acknowledged and forsaken their sins. The book of Proverbs is given to us to learn how to order our ways, not according to what pleases us but as it pleases the Creator. Jim Jones path seemed perfect to him; but it was perilous, plunging him and several hundreds to untimely deaths and eternal perdition. In the age closer than ever to the return of Jesus Christ, there will be intense teaching of false religion intended to deceive the credulous. Only the inerrant word of God – The Bible” can subdue them, guide and steer a person away from evil and destructive doctrines. Reality TV show and social media
This week's topic is the reality TV show. Reality TV show provides more topic and thinking to the digital public such as platforms of social media, and it also gives opportunities for the participants to be known and show themselves. Reality TV show is a kind of program without a script, so there is no actor, which means everything is real and authentic (Metz, 2007). Reality TV show has a strong connection with social media and offers a large space for discussing topics including politics, society, and interests (Deller, 2019). For example, when you follow a television show on Twitter, the liveness would make people interact with each other. When the programs are on air, people including official accounts, hosts and the audience would discuss content through tweets (Deller, 2019). #Auspol is short for Australian politics and used for spreading rumors and commenting about the federal government (Bogle, 2021). It is often used when political performances happen sometimes and people usually use it to discuss or argue about political topics. But it also was used to abuse on September 10th, 2010. It is also a digital public for Australians to share thoughts and ideas about politics.
Tumblr media
More and more people participate in social media to record life or share some moments about their lives, and it has the same ways as reality shows which is authenticity. The rise of micro-celebrity causes people who have more fans to join the reality show, so it will not only create more chances for micro-celebrities to be known but also boost their rating. The reason might be that the audience would like to see the authenticity of the micro-celebrities and it may have some new differences compared to the way people normally see them. However, it is common that some bad comments would exist because of the sense of authenticity, so it is important for the participants on the reality show to avoid making a bad effect on themselves.

Reality Television and Online Discourse (Week 4)
Tumblr media
In recent years, reality television has played a more significant role in online discourse, often being the epicentre for online conversations and controversy. This makes sense considering the genre has been growing larger and larger since its inception. The genre expanded to include multiple subgenres from “radio game show to hidden camera stunt show to dating show to documentary-style series” (Metz 2021). This means that when turning on your television or opening your streaming service when sitting down to watch reality television you can now choose from “unscripted dramas, makeover sagas, celebrity exposés, lifestyle-change shows, dating shows, talent extravaganzas and just about any kind of competition you can think of” (Metz 2021).
Because of this, no longer is there only one type of audience watching reality television, there is a type for anyone with any interests. Therefore, it can be argued that reality television has officially entered the public sphere. The public sphere is a “social space in which different opinions are expressed, problems of general concern are discussed, and collective solutions are developed communicatively” (Oxford Bibliographies 2018).  Reality television, and as a result its stars, have entered into the ring of “being publicly visible and subject to scrutiny by the public” (Oxford Bibliographies 2018). This then leaves space for online discussions to be had regarding what occurred on the show, even triggering pollical-based discussions when something controversial occurs on shows (Graham & Hajru 2011, p. 30).
Tumblr media
The most recent and high profile of this occurring in Australian reality television occurred on Married At First Sight (MAFS) earlier in the year. Olivia, one of the brides, circulated a photo of fellow bride Domenica that was taken from her OnlyFans account (Haddad 2022). Fans of the show then went online to discuss what had occurred, even going as far as to discuss whether Olivia should still be pursuing her career as a teacher, asking if she was fit for the job.
