So as we're heading into the American primaries, now is a super good time to see if you're registered to vote. Remember: even if you've been registered in the past, it's possible you've been removed from the registry without being notified. Go check.

Also, now's a really good time to put into your calendar when the relevant dates are for voting. If you plan on voting for election day, this link lists when that is in your state.

Note that voter ID laws may have changed since last time you voted. This map by ballotpedia shows the requirements by state. These rules may be different in the event that you are showing up to register and vote at the same time.

If you're unhappy with all of the options, remember that voting is not the only form of civic engagement you can engage in - getting engaged in your local community is still very much an option that is on the table and is effective. Voting and community organizing are not mutually exclusive acts. While the presidential race is the most prominent it is not the only race that's happening, and that local races that will affect your life far more directly are also on the ballot. Go vote.

Youngkin doesn’t even seem to believe in his own strategy, because he’s reverting to a classic Republican gambit — preventing people from voting. In March, Youngkin overturned his Democratic predecessor Ralph Northam’s policy that had automatically restored voting rights to people convicted of felonies. Northam had returned the franchise to 69,000 people who’d served their time but Youngkin kept them second-class citizens.

That was bad enough but then his cronies “accidentally” removed hundreds of people from the state’s voter rolls who actually aren’t felons. Whoops!

According to Shawn Weneta, policy strategist at American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, Youngkin’s team has mostly shrugged its shoulders over concerns raised in June about wrongful disenfranchisement of voters.

Weneta told Axios, “If they don’t have this fixed tomorrow, there are going to be people that are showing up to vote who are not going to be registered and are going to vote with a provisional ballot that might not get counted.”

Stand Against Voter Disenfranchisement: Keep Voting Age Fair!

I am writing to express my strong opposition to any efforts to increase the voting age to 21 or older. Recent proposals by some Republicans to raise the voting age are deeply concerning and would unjustly infringe upon the civic duties of legal adults.

It is important to remember that many of our nation's founding fathers, including James Monroe at 18, Aaron Burr at 20, Alexander Hamilton at 21, James Madison at 25, and more, were all young adults when they played pivotal roles in shaping our country. Denying young adults their right to participate in our democracy would contradict the very principles upon which our nation was founded. Would you have prevented these American legends knowing they were capable of greatness?

The notion that if someone is "old enough to fight, they are old enough to vote" holds true today. Young adults contribute to society in meaningful ways and deserve to have a say in the decisions that impact their lives and their futures. If 18-year-olds are fighting and dying for you, you must listen to their voices!

Furthermore, restricting voting rights disproportionately affects already disadvantaged minority voters. We should be working to include and strengthen our populace, including BIPOC Americans, reformed citizens seeking reintegration into society, and our extremely motivated youth. We must work to strengthen voting access for all American citizens, not limit it.

In the words of our American colonials who fought against their British rulers, "Taxation without representation is tyranny." Denying young adult Americans their right to vote would undermine the core principles of our democracy that we have held since day one.

I urge you to oppose any measures that seek to raise the voting age and instead support efforts to protect and expand voting rights for all eligible citizens.
