Exoplanet Heating
WASP-96B is a tidally-locked exoplanet between the size of Saturn and Jupiter. This hot, massive planet lies close to its star, orbiting in less than three-and-a-half Earth days. (Image and research credit: J. Skinner et al.; via APS Physics)

Phosphorescence
Phosphorescence sold before the art drop opened to the public, but here it is for posterity long after the gallery has floated away.
Phosphorescence, 12″x24″ mixed media on paper
In the same vein as Time is Escaping, this larger-scale painting uses shimmering, textured paint to create a feeling of water and movement.
The spiral structure suggests a deep whirlpool or concentric waves, with something brightly phosphorescent bursting out, escaping with its darker-hued cousins. Despite the feeling of depth, the paint in the center…

“Microelectronics forms the foundation of much modern technology today, including smartphones, laptops and even supercomputers. It is based on the ability to allow and stop the flow of electrons through a material. Spin electronics, or spintronics, is a spinoff. It is based on the spin of electrons, and the fact that the electron spin along with the electric charge creates a magnetic field.”
“A team including researchers at Argonne and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) discovered surprising properties in a magnetic material of iron, germanium and tellurium. This material is in the form of a thin sheet that is only a few to 10 atoms in thickness. It is called a 2D ferromagnet.
The team discovered that two kinds of magnetic fields can coexist in this ultrathin material. Scientists call them merons and skyrmions. They are like miniature swirling storm systems dotting the flat landscape of the ferromagnet. But they differ in their size and swirling behavior.“

Tornadoes in a Bucket
In nature, some powerful tornadoes form additional tornadoes within their shear layer. These subvortices revolve around the main tornado, causing massive destruction in their wake. (Image and research credit: G. Di Labbio et al. 1, 2)

1. Purling 2002 #oiloncanvas 145 x 100cm 2. #detail I often get asked what the armature is but this painting is 100% paint on canvas - no wire, no thread, no anything else. It was one of a series of #artworks where I wanted to make the detailing materially physical. The #gesso primer is visible in places and is contrasted with iridescent white brushstrokes and opaque white #checkerboard #vortices painted on top. This #painting was exhibited in London then in Los Angeles. Then it *disappeared* 💨 #lostinla #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #abstractpainting #abstraction #oilpainting #fatpaint #katiepratt https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn63mNdoEBR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

also the (Bi polar vortex and all) is a little play on words! obvs pete has been very open about dealing with bipolar but a polar vortex is a real thing too. specifically it refers to the bodies of cold air that circle the earth's two polar regions. bi-polar vortex especially tickles me because there are indeed literally two polar vortices on the planet.
incidentally joe mentioned that he was diagnosed with bipolar type 2 last year, so i wouldn't be surprised if that was a real thematic element on the album itself. the bisected black-and-white half-smiling half-frowning face really suggests it.
