This pretty gown first appeared in the 1982 British television series 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒔 when Susan Hampshire wore it as Signora Madeline Neroni. Initially, the dress had flowers sewn onto the front, but they were removed for the 2001 𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒍𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒕, where Victoria Hamilton wore it as Queen Victoria. In 2003 the television movie 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒏: 𝑴𝒚 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝑭𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒚 𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒆 used it on an uncredited extra. . . . . . . . . . -THE COUSINS; QUEEN VICTORIA AND VICTOIRE, DUCHESS DE NEMOURS, BY FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER 1852- . Victoire, duchesse de Nemours (1822-1857), was first cousin to both the Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the daughter of their uncle, Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg. A childhood playmate of Prince Albert at Rosenau, Victoire was described by Queen Victoria as ‘like a dear sister to us’ (Benson and Esher 1908). She married Louis, duc de Nemours, second son of the King of France, in April 1840, only two months after the royal wedding in England. Eight years later she was forced into exile with the rest of the French royal family by the Revolution of 1848, living at Claremont House in Surrey. The Duchess was a frequent visitor to Buckingham Palace and it was there that ‘secret’ sittings took place for The Cousins: ‘Dear Victoire & Nemours came to luncheon, & remained til after 3, Vic sat to Winterhalter for the secret’ (Journal, 29 June, 1852). The sitters occupy a two seater ‘tête-a-tête’, in the style of Georges Jacob but not recognisably from the Royal Collection. The background landscape with hills and a river may be imaginary. Queen Victoria wrote that Prince Albert was ‘greatly pleased’ with the painting (Journal, 26 August, 1852). The duchesse de Nemours died in 1857 at Claremont at the age of thirty-five, after giving birth to her fourth child, Blanche. Soon after, Queen Victoria compiled a commemorative album which included a watercolour of the Duchess on her deathbed. She also commissioned three additional copies of The Cousins from William Corden, and a bust of Victoire from Marochetti. The Queen wrote of her cousin, ‘She was so dear, so good – one of those pure, virtuous, unobtrusive characters who make a home peaceful, cheerful and happy’. There is a wonderful show that I love and want another season of about the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign called Victoria which is similar to The Crown about their descendant Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. These two pictures are from the final season/series of the show although unfortunately there are only 3 seasons. Both of the actors who played Victoria and Albert looked just like the two of them in the paintings and portraits from those years that are depicted in the series just like the actors that have played the royal family on The Crown although there is one actor that appeared on both series: the actor who played the abdicated Edward VIII II in the first two seasons of The Crown plus the season 5 flashbacks also played Victoria and Albert’s uncle Leopold I of Belgium who was basically the matchmaker for his niece and nephew just like his relative Louis Mountbatten played matchmaker for Elizabeth and Philip who ended up having a loving marriage like their ancestors. Out of the deceptions of the royals that I have seen so far and I know there are so many more I haven’t seen yet, my three all-time personal favorites are Victoria, The Crown, and The King’s Speech. Both Prince Philip and King Charles III were like their ancestor Prince Albert in terms of wanting something for themselves while at the same time Charles knew that he was going to be end up being King 🤴 when his mother died just like his ancestor Albert Edward knew he was going to end up being King 🤴 when their mothers passed although none of them had any idea they would have such long reigns. This chapter does still focus on Eliot's grief, and Quentin's still technically dead (but not really/permanently?). But, as dark and angsty as this story can be, there's a strong emphasis on the Queliot love story. It feels essential to me. Hopefully you’ll agree!
