Something that I sort of heard about was that the toys Toshiko & Gen are shown playing with as children, when they were talking about there childhood are sort of meant to look like characters from the Usagi Yojimbo comics, representing Murakami Gennosuke (Gen & Toshiko's ancestor) & Inazuma, which is a kind of interesting reference.

Those are both really nice things!!

i also feel like the characters that SR added next to Usagi, Gen, Kitsune and Chizu, to build more on the family element of the show, were all really interesting. I'm a super slow writer myself but it would be cool to see more of that family element, and those other characters from other fans in general. I feel like this is a constant with SRTUC fans I've seen online who mention the other characters at least once haha x3

@umhuhwellthen those neko ninja designs are cool to see so I'm looking forward to the draw the squads you wanna make for them!

The Neko Ninja crew are ones I also have theories about, but I feel like people will start to write more about thme eventually, so in future fanworks, I would maybe like to just have some extra scenes at the farm, or the Neo Edo crew resting their legs a bit after a tough fight and seeing Auntie, Hana and the other kids again. almost like a vacation even :D

Something else I would also like to explore is how to write Gen and Toshiko, because I thought their sibling dynamic of "elder hypochondriac brother with abandonment issues* who became a bounty hunter" and "younger sister who ran away to the circus and other odd jobs" is interesting for me as an older sibling myself.

*lol that is just what I read into it, but the way his story is framed, with him staying with the Shiba Inu doctors after his family was run out of town, the way he felt emotional after Tetsujin and Chizu gave him a prosthetic horn, sorta makes it feel like it would fit...

I would also maybe like to see more of the Neo Edo crews? Or maybe just more of the 3 crews we see in the show, besides the neko ninja. Like the Mogura have a whole town underground and the Bat Squadron seems to have some sort of recent history with the city, with how they don't have a fleet but their leader is called an admiral... an admiral of what? That's something I'm trying to expand on in "Neo Edo Idol" x3

I'd heard in an interview that the show's crew also had other gangs designed so that seems something fun to tackle with the aesthetic the show has established and how different the three crew's shown are :3

My take on the SR:TUC main characters! (along with some headcanons/design changes)

They all have tails because I said so :) (only Kitsune’s can be seen from this angle).

You can’t see Chizo’s tail because Lady Fuwa cut it off. This is either because Fuwa docks all tails from her ninja to make them more agile/less likely to be seen or Chizo did something and to punish her, Fuwa docked her tail. Idk whichever one you like more :)).

Chizo is actually very muscular. I mean, she’s been training to be a ninja since probably before she could walk. Why isn’t she muscular, character designers??

Kitsune is chubby also because I said so.

From oldest to youngest it’s Gen (17), Chizo (16), Usagi (16), and Kitsune (15).

I’m pretty sure it’s heavily implied but Gen and Toshiko are fraternal twins (I’m a twin so you can’t argue with me >:( /j).

I gave Gen dark green eyes because I think his eyes were shown up close in the episode where Usagi and Chikabuma have a staring contest and they were green. I might be misremembering but I’m too lazy to double check lol

Pride headcanons gooo: Usagi is gay Kitsune is lesbian Gen gives me aroacespec vibes and I saw one other people hc that so I’m sticking to my gut Chizo is either sapphic or mspec. Either way she’s not straight (These are only sexuality headcanons cause I don’t really hc gender unless I’m projecting my demigirl-ness. If you want better pride headcanons or just more headcanons in general, check out rabbtle’s post cause there’s a lot of hcs I agree with that I’d just be repeating)

Gen has OCD

Chizune headcanons: The moment Kitsune saw Chizo she liked her. Girl saw a tall, muscular woman and went “oooh yes I want that one” It took Chizo a while to realize she actually had a crush on Chizo because the last crush she had was on Kaiyo (that kid who gave her friendship candy) when she was a young child. Kitsune had some relationship experience, but they weren’t that serious as she was living on the streets and couldn’t commit to something as serious as a romantic relationship. She also preferred to be alone during this period of her life. It’s easier to steal enough money with only one mouth to worry about. Chizo has no relationship experience as all Neko Ninja are forbidden from forming any romantic relationship. They got together by the start of season 2. Kitsune loves how flustered Chizo gets from acts of romantic gestures, even simple ones like holding hands.

Bonus Rise/Usagi Chronicles crossover headcanon: Kitsune makes fun of Usagi’s crush on Leo (”I know what you are”/ref) If anyone has any other headcanons please tell meee!!! There’s almost no Usagi Chronicles stuff on this site D:

Just realized literally all of the main characters of The Usagi Chronicles are orphans. Chizu and Hana, kidnapped from orphanages by the Neko Ninja Crew. Kitsune, a poor orphan thief on the streets, classic Aladdin, slept in a trash can. Usagi, raised by his Auntie, parents mentioned once. Gen and Toshiko, their parents left and their family fell apart. Technically even Kiyoko.

Pillow Talk (Usagi x Chizu)

Yuichi Usagi is still leaning against the door after ogling at Chizu in the bedroom, covering his mouth with his hands while being lovestruck. He heard a quiet knock on the door behind him, he opened the door, and it was Chizu.

"Chizu? I... I didn't know you were still awake... I thought you were going to sleep." said Yuichi Usagi. "I was going to, but I gotta ask... is it ok that I could sleep with you tonight?" Said Chizu. When she asked Usagi "can she sleep with him in bed together?", Usagi's eyes opened wide with shock and excitement.

"Oh my gosh! Yes, yes! She wants to sleep with me tonight! Oh yeah, baby! Yeah!" shouted Usagi's voice in his thoughts. "Why, yes you may," said Usagi. "Thank you," said Chizu, smiling before coming into the room. Usagi makes sure no one's around before closing the door. Chizu takes her robe off, revealing her bra and thong. Usagi watches her taking off her night robe, blushing with lovestruck. Chizu sits on the bed before she stretches, while Usagi lays back on the left spot of the bed. Chizu lies next to Usagi, placing her hand on his chest. Chizu feels Usagi's heartbeat going fast with nervousness and excitement.

"Uh, Usagi?" said Chizu. "Yeah?" said Usagi. "Why is your heart beating so fast? Are you OK?" said Chizu. Oh, yeah, I'm fine... I'm all good." said Usagi, trying to be normal. "It's just that I never had anyone sleeping with me until now," said Usagi. "So, this is your first time, huh?" said Chizu, smirking flirtatiously. "Yeah," said Usagi. "I was wondering about earlier, I heard someone sneeze. Was it you sneezing?" Said Chizu. "Yeah... It was me, that dust is killing my nose right now." Said Usagi.

"I'm pretty sure Gen will probably clean the dust off, so that you won't be sneezing so much." Said Chizu. "Yeah... Hey, Chizu?" Said Usagi. "Yes?" Said Chizu. "Is it true that you were staring at my butt the whole time when I was dressed up?" Said Yuichi Usagi.

"I had to admit, it's true. I stared at you and your handsome body, and even your butt. And I have to admit that you got a nice butt, not gonna lie though." Said Chizu.

Usagi blushed, he smiled with pure cuteness.

"There's something you should know, too... I stared at you and your beautiful curvy body back, I didn't know you wore a thong before." Said Usagi. "Wait, really?" Said Chizu. "Yeah, I mean. You're naturally beautiful and pretty. And your eyes are so charming." Said Usagi.

Chizu blushes very hard.

They looked at each other within 10 seconds with flirtation and passion, their faces went closer and then they share a one big, passionate kiss.

After a one big kiss, they're spooning and cuddling for the first time. Usagi lays beside as the big spoon, while Chizu is in a little spoon position.

They're both resting, a grinning Usagi strokes her hair while she is sleeping. Yuichi Usagi finally closes his eyes and they both sleep together.

The Next Day...

Chizu, Kitsune and Toshiko are hanging out, Usagi came by slapping Chizu in the butt, surprising her.

"Hey, Chizu." Said Usagi. "Hey." Said Chizu, blushing. They embraced like a couple. "Whoa, what's going on there?" Said Toshiko. "Did you guys hook up last night?" Asked Kitsune.

"Nooooo, but we just had a flirty pillow talk." Said Yuichi Usagi. "Yeah, we kissed one time while flirting in bed. That's it." Said Chizu. "Oh. My. God." Said Toshiko and Kitsune, shocked. "Whaaat?" Said Gen, shocked as he listened the conversation about last night.

"Yeah, we did have our kiss last night." Said Usagi. "Yeah." Said Chizu. "I gotta wake Spot up." Said Usagi before he leaves.

Chizu slaps and grabs Usagi's butt, surprises Usagi and causing him to blush and smile.

"Oh, Lord..." Said Kitsune, laughing. "What was that?" Said Toshiko. "I spanked him." Said Chizu.

"Chizu, you lucky cat!" Said Kitsune.

Unofficial Guide to Yuichi Usagi's Friends and Family

This is for the fanfic readers who want to read about Leoichi but aren't as familiar with Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles. Note that I'm not a diehard fan but I did watch the two seasons so here are my thoughts.

This post is also spoiler-y to the show and have referneces to the Usagi Yojimbo comics.

Gen

Samurai Rabbit's Gen vs Usagi Yojimbo's Gen

Samurai Rabbit's Gen is based on Usagi Yojimbo's Gen. UY Gen is a self-proclaimed best friend of Miyamoto and constantly has him paying for the food and drinks every time they meet in their separate journeys.

UY Gen is a bounty hunter who knows how to wield a sword but refuses to follow the samurai code because of daddy issues (his dad chose to be faithful to the samurai code over providing a good life for his wife and kid).

More on Samurai Rabbit's Chizu

SR Chizu has something like a mother complex but a third secret thing with Neko ninja crew leader Lady Fuwa. She was kidnapped as a baby by Lady Fuwa and was trained to be a weapon alongside other cat orphans.

So she kinda has a "You raised us but you kidnapped us. You destroyed our childhood for your gain but I wouldn't be here if not for you. You lie and cheat and backstab including me but I don't want to kill you" complicated thing with her.

Despite ninjas being famous for deception, she's the most strait-laced character in the group.

She tried to be loyal to Lady Fuwa. But Yuichi, Gen, and Kitsune reminded her of her childhood friend that Lady Fuwa took away so that Chizu wouldn't have any other bonds but her. It was Kitsune who was most hurt by her betrayal and Chizu made every effort to make it up to her.

Similar to rottmnt Donnie, she has a dry sense of humor. But again, that's where the similarity stops. If Donnie has evil-scientist-vibes, I think Chizu needs to be reminded to get loose sometimes. Well, at least Kitsune's there to remind her.

She really tried to lead the clan to no crimes but she has so much to learn first. Her clan, with the exception of one who was still loyal to her, turned on her in favor of Lady Fuwa.

Other Stuff I Can Remember about Samurai Rabbit's Chizu

Chizu fights with a kaiksihi weapon bow and arrow, along with her ninja gear of throwing stars and wrist-mounted crossbows. She's also familiar on how to use the naginata (it's like the Japanese version of a polearm).

Is ship-teased with Usagi but it's probably a callback on the Usagi Yojimbo comics.

Has gay energy with Kitsune.

Is looked up to by Hana and the other ninja kittens.

Tetsujin

Based on a sunbear, Tetsujin is the last warrior and guardian of the mystical ki-stone aka Kaikishi warrior. He's the tech guy of the group and his form became that of a sci-fi ghost because of the ki-stone.

He and Lady Fuwa used to be together (which neither Usagi, Gen, Kitsune nor Chizu wants to hear about), but it turned out Lady Fuwa was just using him.

Yuichi Usagi's Aunt

Usagi's Aunt's name is not yet known despite two seasons. She's not based on the Usagi Yojimbo comics. She taught Usagi everything he knows about sword fighting.

Although there was an implication of war a long time ago, judging by Usagi's aunt's leg and ear prosthetics, and that Usagi's parents are nowhere to be seen, there doesn't seem to be any samurais in Neo Edo.

Did She Ever Give Usagi Formal Training on How to be a Samurai? I don't know.

I'm not sure if she has formally taught him how to be a samurai, aside from sword fighting, such as the samurais' philosophies, virtues, and principles. But Usagi once quoted her words about protecting those who need to be protected. So it's possible.

But unlike Miyamoto Usagi, Yuichi Usagi didn't follow the traditional path of being a samurai:

Miyamoto received his sword, Willowbranch, when he was acknowledged by his lord and future master, Lord Mifune, upon proving himself in a tournament.

For Yuichi Usagi, he was given his Aunt's sword, Edgewing, when he wanted to go out to the city. In the Usagi Yojimbo comics, the sword of a samurai is his soul. But it doesn't seem to be the case for Edgewing.

So maybe it's more informal? Since Yuichi Usagi seems to be the only samurai around, the samurai tradition may have become obsolete by the time Yuichi Usagi became Miyamoto Usagi's thousand-year descendant. Similar to how the samurai class was abolished in the late 1860s. But that's just my assumptions.

Did They Pass Down Katsuichi's Unique Style of Swordfighitng? I don't know either.

It is Katsuichi, Miyamoto's sensei, whom Miyamoto learned the way of the sword that had made him a great samurai. But it is not yet confirmed if Usagi's aunt learned the same style.

How does the Yuichi Line Connect to Miyamoto Usago? I don't know that either.

While Miyamoto Usagi is acknowledged as their ancestor, it didn't say in the show if Usagi and his Aunt came from the line of Miyamoto's paternal cousin, Yamamoto Yukichi, or from a descendant of (surname unknown) Jotaro, Miyamoto's son that was raised by his childhood love, Mariko, and childhood rival, Kenichi.

Hana and the other Ninja Orphan Kittens

In the Samurai Rabbit series, Hana and the other orphan ninjas are basically child soldiers. Chizu and Usagi rescued them and the orphans now lived a peaceful life with Usagi's aunt.

They still have a long way to go as they're still trying to get used to civilian life without looting or destroying property (as they did when Usagi and Gen took them on an outing).

Karasu-Tengu

Karasu-Tengu is the Master Yokai of all martial arts and also a nature yokai who doesn't like how Neo Edo had become because it destroyed a forest for it to become so big.

She was going to seclude herself into the deeper parts of the forests to protect and live in it. But Usagi figured out where to find her. She tried to shoo him away like how one would be whacking a slipper after a bug, Usagi fights her as he asks for her to be his sensei.

In the end, Usagi proved himself worthy, and they make a funny pair by how small and harmless Usagi looks like next to her -similar to Miaymoto and his sensei.

Samurai Rabbit has a lot of references to the Usagi Yojimbo comics with more characters. But this post is long enough.

Once in a Blue Moon au. Finally some Chronicles kids, I love them so much 🥹

So in this au Usagi is brought up by his great-aunt, isolated in a far countryside (similarly to the show), but Auntie sends him to train at Karasu’s dojo (that they founded and taught at together, when she was younger. Also Karasu hides her yokai nature and presents as just a giant bird lady) when Yuichi’s 12, so he can finally socialise and get a grip of his electric powers. Toshiko and Gen (14) are there, fulfilling their late parents’ wishes. Chizu (14) is Karasu Tengu’s top pupil that she basically took in, after she was sent to assassinate her and failed to follow orders. (Chizu doesn’t sleep very much, always on the look out for the revenge from her clan mates). And Kitsune (13) is a shapeshifting thief (and most probably a yokai descendant, but she’s not really sure herself) who stumbled upon the dojo after she was chased out of the city and now just kind of hangs around in the shadows, stealing food and small objects and dragging them back to the lair she dug for herself. Usagi is very bad at socialising with his peers (especially guys, because he grew up with no men around and just treats them as an annoying competition), but becomes fast friends with her, cause they’re both chaotic, unsocialised babies.

I finished watching Samurai Rabbit: Usagi Chronicles

He is SO stupid

I love him, I hate him, i love to hate him and hate to love him

I get it get it now when people say they wanna put a character into a blender and stuff

I wanna put him in a jar and pickle him

Grab him like one of those squishy toys so his head is huge and eyes bulging

A lot of times I needed to tell myself or my brother (who was watching with me) that it's just a kids show and so runs on kids show logic and shortcuts but goddam

Kitsune and Testujin are my fav characters, oh Auntie too

I read leoichi fanfic before watching and wow did not expect Lady Fuwa to look like that

Hilarious though, high comedy, and she would be either one of those super fluffy cats or hairless ones no inbetween

Hate spots voice acting btw

I liked Chizu's habit/catchphrase of saying whether something was optimal or not, thought that was cute and funny sometimes

Also was the only thing they did to differentiate Toshiko and Gen was to give her piercings and different weapons? Really? I mean kudos on not overly femininsing her but still

Aside from the Rise characters, Jei, and the Usagi family, what other characters (from Usagi Yojimbo comics or the Usagi chronicles) do you plan to add??

No need for concept art, just possible names 😃

(Oh good cause I don't have any art to show) Lord Hikiji, Lord Hebi, Big Mama. Lord Mifune, Tiger Claw, Alopex, Mariko, Jotaro, and Kenichi. Chizu, Kitsune, Tomoe, Gen, Toshiko, Kintaro, and Tetsujin. Some characters will have a bigger impact than others, but will mostly be supporting or side characters. We will rarely see any of these other characters enter the scene in a permanent sense until the future has been established, although its a lot of characters on top of pre-existing characters, so we may only see a smaller increase to the permanent roster.
