someone I follow on the bird app just announced they're starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they're reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic

I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS

I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there's 10,000 other people that will continue...but if you participate in a fic "book club" server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?

the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don't rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit "post"

I'm getting a lot more confident with my fully rendered illustrations and I'm also in need of money, as one is; so I've decided to make a post about it!

I'm opening 3 fully rendered illustration slots a month (it's possible I'll need to adjust it depending on the time I have, but for now I'm keeping it like that). I'm ready to tackle anything! Canon characters, OCs, your favorite ships, fanfiction scenes, maybe a scene from your original story, book or tabletop campaign! Reach out and we'll make it work.

These are 150EUR as base price, there might be adjustments depending on the level of work required. Normally I would ask for full payment upfront, but I can also do the initial sketch for half the agreed price before you send the rest. Thank you SO much for considering!

Opinion time!

I think "Show, Don't Tell" is highly overrated advice. Don't get me wrong, it is indeed preferrable that you put the character in situations that show their thoughts/feelings/worldview in action instead of just telling it to the audience.

BUT. This is not the ultimate problem-solver either! I feel like lately I see so much... emptiness in the telling department? Dialogue that's vague, comes from nowhere and leads nowhere? Characters just knowing or feeling things about others that feel unwarranted? Maybe it's just my own perception, but there are cases where your character really NEEDS to TELL. Sometimes a story NEEDS explanations, or an emotional speech, or huge revelations, or a story within the story, or a confession or a love declaration, and you NEED to tell that!! If you know your characters intimately, if you know your story and where you want to go, and you feel like a character needs to tell others and the audience something, then you don't need to feel constrained or afraid to do it!! Language is the medium through which human beings LIVE, it's not only logistical communication, language is EVERYTHING. Language is emotion, it's relationships, it's where dreams and hopes live and it's also how characters reach out to other characters too. Please don't take that for granted, please DO TELL. PLEASE DO TELL. Just make sure what you're telling MATTERS!

Ken and Tetsu is one of those things that came unexpectedly while discussing Sword Lifted and has become one of my favorite relationships gjfhh they have this weird thing where they both have very similar values/core motivations (family protectors, sticking to what they know, self-sacrificing, stubborn), and they both have a similar experience of having to become self-sufficient at a really young age cause their families didn't allow them to be children, BUT they approach this with a nearly opposite personality so while most of the time they're just butting heads about stupid stuff, they really get each other. But BY FAR the most fun I have with them is the fact that while everyone else in the family is bilingual, Tetsuya only speaks japanese and Kenichi only speaks english. Leave them alone together and poor communication shenanigans ensue.

I don't know which artist needs to hear this, but if you don't like your lineart...if you find that the lineart stage does not add any value to your artwork...then you do not need to do lineart. your artwork is still complete if you go straight from sketch to colours. as long as you think it's complete.

look. the nature of the artist (any kind) is to become inexplicably obsessed with certain themes and motifs for a few years and just milk that subject matter to death. when respected artists do this, art critics refer to it as a “period.” the only thing separating you from them is fame and accolades. to your haters you will be “that freak who’s fixated on drawing weird trains,” while to your admirers, you are simply in your “tiny trains made out of household appliances” period
