My completely unnecessary in-depth analysis of what wedding dress Hailey would have worn had she decided to wear a dress when they got married
Disclaimer: this is solely based off my imagination and assumed preferences for Hailey. Also, If you don’t want to read, you can just skip to the bottom where I posted a picture of my final choice.
I fully accept that Hailey wearing a burgundy turtleneck and a black leather jacket while she and Jay have a courthouse wedding is pretty true to form for this pairing.
HOWEVER
The Upstead proposal had me scouring the internet for the perfect wedding dress for Hailey Anne Upton and I wanted to share my findings for those who might be interested.
Luckily neither of them are the big wedding types, so very small and very private (including a courthouse ceremony) were the only viable options in my mind. Didn’t matter if it was indoor or outdoor or if there was a running theme. Tastefully simple was always going to be the default. Or the decor brought to you by the local Justice of the Peace.
Didn’t matter.
But the thing that stalled me the most was probably the one thing that receives the most attention at any wedding, big or small.
The dress.
Luckily, I figured it would be the same kind of dress regardless of the venue considering small and simple was the way to go (in my mind). But there are so many factors when finding the right wedding dress, especially when it’s for a character who rarely wears a dress. (I think Hailey wore an LBD like one time for a case?) So relying on imagination is extremely important for this process.
That being said, here are a few things that I took into consideration:
Skirt length
Skirt shape
Sleeves
Bodice
Neckline
Material
Embellishments (including but not limited to lace, beading, sequins, border trims, fringe, ribbons, ruffles, pearls etc.)
Bonus round: the veil
So starting off with: the skirt
Hailey is not a ball gown girl. No full on princess skirt she has to squeeze through doorways, and nothing that requires layers. It’s way too much and she would have zero patience for it. So I’m thinking something sleek, fitted without being clingy, and drapes elegantly over her curves but doesn’t constrict. In short, nothing that requires a bridesmaid to help her when she needs to pee while wearing the dress.
No floor length (as much as I love a full length gown) and we are definitely not shooting for Vegas style with a mini skirt. Hard no.
That puts us at a safe middle ground midi (aka tea length), floating delicately around the calves. There's no fear of dragging on the ground or any issues that may be caused by a train. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, she doesn't have to worry about tugging her skirt down every 2 minutes so she’s not flashing everyone with the mini option.
All in all, while it is her wedding day, I still think Hailey would want the option that enables the most mobility.
Next order of business: Sleeves
I had the most difficult time with this one. Considering Hailey’s penchant for hoodies, sweaters and various long sleeve options with the occasional t-shirt, I thought this would be an easy choice. I was wrong.
I wasn’t seeing Hailey as a strapless or a halter style, and I just couldn’t get a good visual with anything ranging from a cap sleeve to a 3/4 to a long sleeve. Nothing was vibing. This is was one of those selections that I could not settle on until I had a proper visual of the rest of the dress. I surprised myself when the final choice was a spaghetti strapped option as I’m not usually a fan. But with the neckline I chose, it’s a wonderful pairing in my opinion.
Speaking of the neckline (and bodice):
This was my number 2 struggle just below the sleeves. And in order to decide sleeves, I had to figure this out.
For me, the neckline went hand in hand with the bodice. I definitely have a preference for a more structured look rather than a loose fit boho feel. But neither of those were really hitting home. I don’t see her wanting something too tight or anything with boning, but definitely not picturing anything going the formless route. So like the skirt, we’re going for a middle ground.
My conclusion? A slip dress. Not my usual choice, but I love the drapey look of it, especially when made with silk satin. It’s got a bit of a relaxed look with how the fabric sits loosely against the skin, but with just a slight nip in around the waist to give a sleek silhouette that would look GORGEOUS on Hailey.
And to complete that drapey look that I can’t seem to pry myself away from, a cowl neckline. Hailey’s doesn't seem the plunging neckline type, but this gives both coverage and cleavage, and is what ultimately led me to the conclusion of spaghetti straps.
A two for one - material and embellishments:
I pretty much gave it away in the last section, but after looking at a lot of wedding dress materials, I just can’t picture a lot of lace, sequins, ruffles etc. Like the wedding itself, I was picturing simple and tasteful. Ribbons and appliqué don’t seem like something Hailey would like or want to be concerned about. I think she’d rather go for something simple where no assembly is required. No complicated buttons or ribbons. Nothing she would need more than a mirror and possibly a helping hand with the zipper (preferably Jay’s but this is the wedding day and he is a traditional guy).
The selection for the type and shape of dress made this choice easy because a silk satin material seems to be the default for the slip dress look. It also cleared up the turmoil regarding embellishments, especially my vice grip on lace, since it honestly looks best with no embellishments at all.
Classy and sleek and just sexy enough with how it looks like it might glide right off Hailey's figure without the security of those thin straps. A nice sprinkling of temptation for Jay.
And last, the veil:
The one place I might’ve been able to get my fix of wedding lace. Short or long? Birdcage or cathedral? Maybe hanging down to the lower back? Then there's the question of borders. So many decisions for this one single piece. But after considering my options and the final selection of the dress, my choice was ultimately:
No veil.
I’m not necessarily going for a minimalist look, but I don’t think it’s an addition that’s needed. If anything, I think Hailey would have something like a sequined clip in her hair. Either for a loose updo (like a low bun that's loosely crown braided back with little wispy tendrils framing her face), a half up half down, or my favorite look: that signature deep side part. Throw in a light curl and clip to pull back one side and *chefs kiss* beautiful.
The final reveal:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually really like the shoes that the model wears with it as well. A white or nude heel would probably look best with the dress.
And the flowers? Even though I have a hard time picturing Hailey holding anything but Jay’s hands, I can see her having something like this gorgeous Magnolia bouquet. Simple and elegant like the rest of the outfit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There you have it! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, especially if you actually read this entire post seeing as it has zero bearing on the show whatsoever. Either way, it was fun!

I can’t tell if I’m more anxious for the finale or for the reactions from the One Chicago fans that’s gonna find it’s way on here. Lol I can say very confidently though that both will be highly entertaining.
Gear up One Chicago fans, this it is!

I'm sorry but Gwen Sigan went from writing their wedding vows (or at least being assigned the script) to basically calling the relationship a trauma response that wasn't meant to last (or at least not now). What?
I’m choosing to ignore everything that woman says from here on out because she has simply lost the plot. I will instead be living and believing in the version of upstead Jesse and Tracy see because after all, I don’t believe Jesse would’ve said this if it were all just a trauma response

Oh look, burzeks playing the victim again...
The same fandom that blamed everything and I mean everything on Upstead (and Hailey, just look how they behave everytime she has screentime in "their" episodes 🙄).
The same fandom that has been insanely jealous of Upstead popularity for years and even celebrated when the Upstead wedding was spoiled by one of their own.
The same fandom that laughed of every horrible thing Lstead and SB stans have said about Tracy.
The same fandom that even with Upstead gone can't stop talking about them.
So, shut up and sit down. Your fandom is not innocent and karma is a bitch... Once Hailey is gone, who do you think Gwen is going to hurt? better enjoy your time on the spotlight (and also, be careful because another new and fresh couple might steal your thunder... again).
You ate with this, Anon. You also dropped this…

I’ll show you mine - Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary - He didn’t fit. His clothes were too nice, his hair too neat, he was raising all the red flags for Hailey. She didn’t think he was part of the crew she was trying to take down, but why else would he be in such an establishment on a random Tuesday night? But then he muttered the words into her ear that she had least expected - ‘I’m police’.
Chapters - 1/3
Notes - I’ve wanted to write an undercover Upstead first meet fic for ages so here it is! It spiralled into more than a oneshot so it’s split into three parts, happy reading! ❤️ AO3 Link
Hailey lifted her glass to her mouth but the liquid only brushed against the seam of her lips before she placed it down again. No one was watching her close enough to see that the whiskey in her glass hadn’t decreased in the past hour. She was on the clock and whiskey was not conducive to remaining alert.
Her eyes scanned across the room again making mental notes as she did so. In the far corner was a black haired man in his 40’s nursing a beer whilst playing with a wedding band. The table opposite the jukebox was home to a couple whose drinks had remained untouched for the past twenty minutes, their mouths preoccupied with devouring each other. Other patrons were scattered around the room, the standard haunts for a drinking establishment on a Tuesday night.
‘Another for you Kelly?’ The barkeep said, knowing the answer would be no like it had been every other time he had asked.
‘Not for me Sam, but thanks,’ she said with a wink. He must have been only just over 21 himself, probably in his first job. Little did he know that the man who ran the payroll, was running cocaine cut with battery acid throughout the South Side and Hailey was trying to gather enough evidence to bring him down. There were already too many bodies they could tie to this guy.
It had been slow going. She had been coming to this bar every night for the past week, getting on first name basis with Sam until she learnt that he knew nothing. His poor attempts at flirting was all she had gotten out of him. They knew from previous recon that the owner of the bar, River Harrison, did show up on occasion and the team's plan was to either get something on the wire to incriminate him or Hailey was going to turn on the charm and they were going to go black ops and load him into the back of a van with some jumped up charges when she lured him outside.
But since she had started frequenting the bar, they hadn’t seen sight nor sound of him. She was starting to wonder if they, or more specifically she, had been made.
Just as she was thinking of wrapping it up for the night, the door behind her opened. Glancing at a strategically placed mirror on the bar, she saw who had entered. He was tall, closely cut hair - ex-army if Hailey had to guess. She watched as his green eyes scanned the bar before clearly settling on her. She kept her eyes straight forward - Kelly wasn’t interested in chatting anyone up or being chatted up.
‘This seat taken?’ The man asked, his voice silky smooth with a born and bred Chicago accent.
Hailey glanced round and shrugged, he seemed a little out of place for an establishment like this, although his outfit was casual enough, the blue jeans and black t-shirt with a khaki green button down. He had an air of confidence about him that those who drink alone on a week night don’t normally possess.
‘I shall take that as a no then,’ he smirked and settled down on the stool next to hers.
‘Free country,’ she said nonchalantly, turning her attention back to the television screen above the bar.
‘I could buy you a drink,’ he suggested.
‘You could but considering I haven’t finished this one, it’s likely to go to waste,’ she said cooly, her eyes flicking down to the mirror and immediately back up to the television when she was met with his emerald eyes shining directly back at hers in its reflection.
‘Well if you decide to finish it, you let me know,’ he said with a grin. He proceeded to order a beer and when he picked it up to drink, Hailey noticed another thing. His nails were perfectly clean and trimmed, also unusual. This bar didn’t usually house the most neatly manicured of men. She hoped her button cam was picking up enough of an image that she could run it at the district, he was raising all the red flags with her.
Having someone sit directly next to you when you were trying to run surveillance wasn’t the easiest, especially when he seemed intent on trying to engage her in conversation even as Hailey continued to shrug off his advances.
‘So come here often?’ He said on the third attempt, all his previous attempts had fallen flat with her being able to provide a yes or a no answer that allowed the conversation to stall.
Hailey scoffed, ‘that’s the line you’re going with?’
‘Well it got more of an answer out of you than any of my other ones did,’ he smirked again. The kind of smirk that you either wanted to slap off of a guy's face, or grab it with both hands and smash your lips into theirs. Hailey wasn’t sure which one of those she wanted to do although neither were professional when she was on the clock. Unfortunately.
‘Touché’ Hailey said, raising her glass to his and tipping the amber liquid against her lips again. His eyes were fixed on her as she did so and she saw something flash across his eyes as she lowered her glass again. She definitely needed to get back to the district and run this guy through the system.
‘I’m Ryan, not that you asked,’ he smirked again, lifting his own drink to his mouth. Mirroring her however, he didn’t appear to drink a single drop. The liquid line remained where it had been previously when he rested it against the bar top.
‘Kelly,’ she said simply. Ryan. She didn’t think there was a Ryan on River’s payroll, they knew all of his major lieutenants but maybe they had missed someone. This guy was giving off all the indications that he was here for a reason and she didn’t think that reason was the beer he clearly wasn’t drinking.
‘Kelly,’ he repeated as if he was testing her name on his tongue. ‘Pleasure.’
She hummed in response.
‘So you didn’t answer my question Kelly,’ Ryan persisted. She had to give him points for trying anyway.
‘And what question would that be,’ she said, finally relenting and turning to face him, resting her chin on her fist as her elbow lent atop the counter. She’d probably regret it later when her white sweater was stained with years of spilt drinks.
‘Do you come here often?’
‘On occasion,’ she said.
‘And is tonight any specific occasion?’ He asked, his smirk still firmly fixed to his face as he tilted his head slightly to the side.
‘Just a Tuesday that needed some whiskey,’ Hailey shrugged. She couldn’t work out what information he was trying to get out of her. If he was one of River’s men and they had the bar under surveillance then he would already know she had been in every night. But when he had walked in, he had not seemed prepared to see her at the bar or else he wouldn’t have scanned the room first.
‘And a chat from a handsome man,’ he winked at her and although a strange man winking at her in a bar would normally make her skin crawl, this made her cheeks redden.
‘If you find one, send him my way would you,’ she sassed back, raising an eyebrow and pulling her own lips into a smirk.
‘You wound me Kelly,’ Ryan said, feigning pain and clutching at his heart with his hand that remained free from the bottle of beer he still hadn’t taken a single sip from.
‘Let me know if you need me to call you an ambulance,’ she had to stop herself from chuckling at her own words. Serves the guy right for trying to flirt with her when she was busy.
——————————————————————————
When Hailey exited the bathroom with the intent of heading back to her seat, she was pulled to the side into the shadows of the bathroom corridor. A firm body was pressed against hers into the wall and she tensed herself to fight back. The body was definitely larger than hers, broader, but she’d taken down bigger men, she doubted this one would be a problem.
‘Don’t shout, I’m police.’ It was the dulcet tones of Ryan and those were the last words she expected him to whisper into her ear.
‘I’ll show you mine if you show me yours,’ she responded and she felt him take her hand and slide it under his shirt. To anyone walking past it would look like two intoxicated strangers fumbling with each other in the hallway. In reality, Hailey felt her fingers graze against his warm skin and then come into contact with a wire.
Shit.
He was police.
Well at least her instincts that he didn’t fit in at the bar had been correct.
She took his own hand and slid it under her shirt and up to the wire that was taped between her breasts.
‘So Kelly, are we getting out of here?’ He said, his mouth only an inch away from her ear.
‘I think that’s probably the most sensible thing you’ve said all evening,’ she whispered back, retracting his hand from her chest but then firmly linking his fingers with his. They didn’t know if there was a camera at this position in the bar but he had instigated their rendezvous and they needed to continue the act until they were certain they weren’t being watched.
She tugged him back into the bar and waved flirtily to Sam.
‘See you tomorrow Sam,’ she winked at him.
‘Bye Kelly,’ he said, his tone slightly disappointed to see her walking out of the bar that was someone that wasn’t him.
She giggled, she hated playing the giggly drunk but it seemed appropriate now, and she felt Ryan pull her into his side.
‘Yes bye Sam,’ he said over his shoulder and Hailey could only imagine the look on the young bartender's face.
When they had left the bar, it was her turn to push him against the wall. Under the guise of attaching her lips to his neck, which did look very tempting, she whispered against his lightly freckled skin.
‘Is your team near?’
She felt him nod and his hand buried itself in her hair, pulling her head up and bringing her ear nearer to his own lips.
‘Parked a block away, yours?’
She shook her head and pulled herself away from him, ‘your place or mine?’ She asked with a wink.
‘Mine,’ Ryan said, tugging on their still linked hands and leading her towards a blacked out panel van. It hadn’t been parked outside the bar when she had arrived or she would have noticed it, she had noted every car parked within a 100 foot radius of the bar.
‘After you,’ he said with a smirk and pulled open the door so she could climb in.
She was met with the perplexed looks of two officers, a young woman who she guessed was about her own age and an elderly cop who Hailey imagined was edging closer to retirement as every minute passed.
She heard the door shut behind her and turned to face Ryan.
‘Okay, so debrief now?’ Ryan asked.
‘Probably for the best,’ she agreed, ‘you can start.’
‘Okay,’ Ryan said, taking a seat on the small bench at the side of the van leaving Hailey to take up residence on the only remaining stool. With 4 grown adults in the back of the van it was quite a tight squeeze. ‘Detective Jay Halstead,’ he said with a smile. It wasn’t the same smirk he had given her at the bar, this was genuine, his white teeth shining and his emerald eyes glistening under the fluorescent lights. ‘This is Officer Burgess and Detective Olinsky,’ he gestured at his van mates in turn. ‘The Intelligence Unit got intel that the owner of the bar isn’t just in the liquor business so we decided to come and stake it out. You didn’t fit, too clean, too put together for a bar like that so I thought you might have been a member of his crew. We knew he had a couple of key lieutenants but hadn’t been able to dig in any further to be able to rule you out. I took a shot,’ Jay chuckled. ‘Sorry for the corridor,’ he added and she brushed it off, choosing to ignore how her heart had quickened as his hand had skimmed under her shirt and across her skin.
‘You’re fine. Okay so I’m Detective Upton, Hailey, with the Narcotics Unit. We had a similar piece of intel and it’s worse than just pushing the stuff, it’s being cut with battery acid and we’ve already had confirmed fatalities linked to it. So I’ve been staking out the place for the past week. We know Harrison drops in on occasion though we don’t have any evidence that the bar is used as a front to move product, more as a legitimate business to run the money through.’ This seemed to be news to the other occupants of the van so the female officer, Burgess, scribbled the notes down. ‘Technically I’m off book tonight, nothing has happened in the past week and my officers were tired so I gave them the night off and came anyway. Before you lecture, I was purely on an observation mission.’ She looked over at Jay, ‘I also thought you didn’t fit but hadn’t planned to drag you into a darkened corner to find out,’ she chuckled. ‘I was just going to run you through the system tomorrow.’
‘Fair enough,’ Jay said calmly, his eyes still sparkling as he looked at her, ‘so the bartender, Sam?’ He asked.
‘Is just a bartender,’ Hailey shrugged. ‘I thought he was in on it at the start, but he’s just a kid trying to earn money for his mother’s medical bills.’ Sam had admitted as much to her on only her second night in the bar, she felt sorry for him but apart from tipping him well, there was nothing she could do currently.
‘So the plan?’ Olinksy asked, ‘because no offence to the pair of you but listening to you flirt on the wire was painful.’ Hailey felt the blush creep up her cheeks and watched Jay smack him across the shoulders.
‘Well we’ve already left for the night now so it would be weird for us to go back in on the off chance that this Harrison shows up,’ Jay said and Hailey agreed with a nod.
‘So we can regroup in the morning and join up?’ She suggested.
‘Your Sargeant will go for that?’ Jay said, he seemed shocked that she had suggested a collaborative effort for some reason.
‘If it gets the case solved quicker than yeah, why will yours not be?’ She questioned and heard Olinksy scoff from behind her.
‘I’ll handle him,’ Jay said firmly, his eyes flicking between hers and Olinksy. ‘We are based out of the 21st, see you at 8?’
‘See you then,’ she said and made a move to open the door back onto the street.
‘Do you want a lift?’ Jay asked quickly.
‘My car is parked on the next block,’ she said with a smile. ‘See you at the 21st.’ And with that she opened the door and headed back into the brisk Chicago night but somehow the cold didn’t bother her like it had earlier.

It's so insane to me that 3 years ago we were celebrating their first kiss. 2 years ago we were celebrating their wedding. than a year ago we found out about Jay extending and now this; official divorce. I could've completely understood why if Tracy was staying since they can't close off such a big storytelling avenue for her as romance is. Like Hailey Upton is not the same type of character as Carissi, which is why Rolissi offscreen works so well. But the fact that Tracy is leaving and they still went down this road. Feels like they actually are trying to hurt us. Sorry rant over.
I, too, would have understood if Tracy had signed for a few more years. I would have understood the decision to choose that route. However, with 13 episodes remaining, there was really no excuse to not give both Jay and Hailey closure, as well as Upstead. Why not send off two of the most loved characters into the sunset when you can trauma-dump some more?
It feels like it's out of spite. I agree. And it's a really shitty feeling.
And by all means, rant on as much as you want in my inbox. Let's get through this all together <3

what is your top 10 favorite upstead scenes/moments?
The shoulder touch in 5x05. It's so small and kind of not really important; but Jay's sitting at the computer and Hailey just casually puts her hand on his shoulder when she leans forward to look over him. They'd barely known each other for that long at this point but it seems so effortlessly and habitable already???
5x18 - especially the ending scene when Jay shows up at her place because he knows she doesn't really wanna be alone and he knows that she's not alright so he stays.
The ending scene in 6x07. This is the first moment when they really give voice to the thing between them and how/why it works so well. And Jay opens up to her and they head out for a beer? and it's just so fucking them.
the "we're good and we're always going to be good" scene in 6x10
6x15 Hailey’s “I’d follow you blind” scene and the look on Jay’s face and also her "i've trusted you from the day I met you" because knowing Hailey's history and her abusive father - there's probably not a lot of people, but especially men that she can say that about.
The "I'm going where you go in 6x22
7x10 - the ending in the hospital when Hailey sees that while Jay is busted up, he's okay and that smile on her face????
Is it cliché to claim their kiss in 8x03? Cause I do. You can just tell how shy Hailey is about the whole situation and how she admits to him that she doesn't wanna take the job because of him??? Oh i'm trash for them.
9x01 when Jay proposes to her in the middle of their living room.
9x09 - their wedding - sure it's mostly a voice over with just a montage of them at the courthouse; but I just love it so fucking much because running to the courthouse in their casual clothes are just so fucking them, I can't
Honorable mentions
4x21 - I think I have to mention their "first" meeting; because the way Hailey just takes charge over Voight? And the clear look of amusement on Jay's face. It's everything tbh.
"Of course I love him, he's my partner"
9x04, when she starts having that panic attack in the locker rooms and Jay grabs her hand and talks her through it?

You know what, I was just minding my own business but that stupid fucking person has really pissed me off, so I'm just gonna bitch for a while because upstead stans are the fucking worse and have literally been saying insane shit for over a year now.
putting this under a cut tho for my lovely mutuals who are upstead fans who are not part of the crazies and I don't wish for them to have to see my extreme bitchy and pettiness.
"Gwen Sigan doesn't believe that two ships can be happy at the same time" - yeah it's called have you fucking ever watched pd? LITERALLY been happening from the start it's not even unique to Sigan. This also really pisses me off because when I complained about Eid not believing in two ships being happy at once it was 'stop being dramatic' 'it makes for good tv' and, my absolute fucking favourite, 'burzek are just too toxic/traumtised for each other".
Oh but when your ship marries out of trauma (thank you gwen for pointing that out) and who's whole relationship was still very new and tested so frequently compared to ten years of loving, hurting and growing, it's oh no sigan is a shit writer.
There's also the fact that JESSE LEFT. I don't think there's any reason why Sigan shouldn't have re-written the divorce plans set from last season, and built up a happy upstead ending now we're also losing Tracy, but with Jesse gone, 'two ships can't be happy at once' CANNOT literally apply, because one half is gone, so it's no longer a viable plot point to the writers' perspective.
It's also not lost on me that upstead stans worshipped Sigan until Jesse left. 'Sigan didn't give upstead a chance' No, upstead stans didn't give her a chance. Which, granted, they shouldn't have to. If half of your ship leaves, it's perfectly valid to stop watching. But they evaluate sigan like they're fucking unbiased and not that they made up their minds about her as soon as the news hit.
(and that's not even talking about how before the news hit they were saying the 200th episode should be upstead focused, but upstead is broken and suddenly it's it should be about everyone).
And the marriage WAS born out of trauma. They had also barely been dating - it doesn't matter if you've been friends first, a relationship is different. And then they immediately went through A LOT at work, and they hadn't even been in the relationship long enough to learn how it would affect it, long-term.
"They're giving us burzek/burzek wedding to distract from upstead" get fucking over yourself.
"Sigan should admit she hates upstead/hates that the actors left" high talk from people who can't even fucking admit their ship is not the end all or be all of cpd. That they've been faced with the reality that upstead doesn't make or carry the show, like they've been delusionally believing. And that upstead is NO WHERE near the most iconic ship of the show.
Honestly, half the time these fucking people make me wish that Hailey is written out through a death/ or the linsteads get what they want - an off-screen reunion - even though my baby erin doesn't deserve that just to fucking spite them and I would HATE if that happened, but spite is a powerful thing.
if you've gotten to here, thank you for listening to my rant :)
