Again, if there are no rules and words have no meaning, there’s no reason you can’t say your pronouns are “banana” and “rock” and make your woke teacher use them.
The fact that the classmates backed him up gives me hope that the next generation is ready to rebel against this nonsense

PROFILE.
Unassuming and reserved, [𝐶𝑂𝑊𝐵𝑂𝑌 𝐺𝑅𝐸𝐸𝑇𝐼𝑁𝐺]’s record of service can, at best, be described as consistent. However, the origins of this operative’s connection to the Foundation are strikingly non-standard. As a child they survived not only direct exposure to an apocalyptic Apollyon-Class SCP that manifested at their hometown [DATA EXPUNGED], but also the contingency plan enacted to avoid a K-Class Scenario. Despite administration of Class B Amnestics to target [𝐶𝑂𝑊𝐵𝑂𝑌 𝐺𝑅𝐸𝐸𝑇𝐼𝑁𝐺]’s memories regarding the real reason that half the population of [DATA EXPUNGED] disappeared overnight, medical reports indicate the operative has persistent dreams involving the incident. So it was quite serendipitous that [𝐶𝑂𝑊𝐵𝑂𝑌 𝐺𝑅𝐸𝐸𝑇𝐼𝑁𝐺] ended up working for the Foundation in adulthood. Whether this result can be chalked up to coincidence or this operative’s connection to researcher [𝑇𝑅𝐸𝐸 𝐻𝑈𝐺𝐺𝐸𝑅] is yet to be seen. In any case, the Ethics Committee is certain that their participation in MTF Chi-00 will lead to a future breakthrough on synthetic amnestics, and will be supervising their growth within the team. — Internal Memo from the Ethics Committee.

INTERRELATIONS OF NOTE.
𝑂𝐿𝐷 𝑆𝑃𝑂𝑅𝑇. In contrast to you, they seem able to remain calm under any sort of pressure. It’s admirable and comforting. But only kind of, because it’s hard not to compare yourself to them. Insecurities about whether or not you should be here are starting to spill over and taint the work you’re doing. Thankfully, it seems that 𝑂𝐿𝐷 𝑆𝑃𝑂𝑅𝑇 has noticed and has decided to watch over you. Or are they merely just watching?
𝑇𝑅𝐸𝐸 𝐻𝑈𝐺𝐺𝐸𝑅. You’d follow them to hell and back, but… you’re starting to think this latest venture might have been a mistake — for both of you. You’re hoping you’re wrong and it’s just stress over the new position. Plus, you can tell how excited 𝑇𝑅𝐸𝐸 𝐻𝑈𝐺𝐺𝐸𝑅 is by all this. But like with everything else, doubts have started to creep in and you’ve have always wondered if they really understand what the purpose of the Foundation is. Still, you’d never leave their side if you have any say about it.
𝐸𝐿𝐸𝑉𝐴𝑇𝑂𝑅 𝑀𝑈𝑆𝐼𝐶. You find yourself in their office on the regular lately. You’re not even sure why, half the time; maybe you just need somebody to talk to. Somebody who doesn’t know you like the back of their hand…. Y’know, maybe it’s time that you moved out of your comfort zone and made new friends. 𝐸𝐿𝐸𝑉𝐴𝑇𝑂𝑅 𝑀𝑈𝑆𝐼𝐶 seems like a good choice in that regard.

What is the current year the fic is set in? I know it’s been 10,000 years since the last Warden appearance, but I’m assuming it’s some time after that for society to pick itself up enough to start counting years ago, and I’m curious how long that was. Is the year like 8217, or like 5742, or even as recent as 3108??
Also what’s the calendar like? Is it basically similar to Earth with 12 months of about 30 days each or like. Is it different??
And back to the years thing again - do we get to know how long ago/how long after the Warden was it when Grian and Jimmy (and Gem 👀👀) parted for the last time? I’m assuming it’s somewhere between 3000-7000 years ago/years after the Warden but I’m curious to hear if we get a more specific time frame.
Thanks so much!!
I need you to know I have a whole ramble on this in my drafts where I'm trying to figure everything out. I shot myself in the foot by making everything super vague hgfhjjk SO BEAR WITH ME AS I RAMBLE ABOUT THIS
So Mumbo was born in 3998 and it's been ALMOST five hundred years since he was born, but not quite. I did a lot of math that is incomprehensible now and both Belle and I landed at the current year being roughly 4487 at the start of Midnight in which Tubbo is still 17; he turns 18 during Midnight Lies, still in 4487 a few months after Grian meets Mumbo, and 20 during Midnight Alley, which means a little more than 2 years has passed, so the current year is placed in ~4489. (this also means at least one year has passed between Midnight Lies and Midnight Visit, since Tubbo was 19 in Visit lol). This means they started counting years again nearly 5,000 years after the Warden happened.
So, remember; Boatem was founded 2,000 years ago (roughly 2400's), and the Hermetian kingdom was founded four hundred years later, around the 2800's. Yet Scar describes Boatem as being one of the oldest settlements on the continent, with the people from Boatem having come from across the sea. Yet they've been counting years for nearly 5,000 years, and we know the Ancients were settled on this continent 10,000+ years ago, and there were people who survived the Wardens...
So what happened to the survivors' settlements? Why is it that in 10,000 years, one of the oldest settlements on the entire continent is only two thousand years old? Well...
Strongholds are above Ancient Cities. Desert temples, jungle temples, ocean monuments, the ruins Drowned are often found around... well, where did they come from? They're all younger than the Ancient Cities, yet older than current society. These were all once marks of civilizations that no longer exist
Something happened in those ten thousand years that reset society again :) And whatever that was is what people are counting from. It wasn't as big as the Warden, ofc, but it was bad enough that few cities or villages or settlements from before it survived, and those that did were often abandoned for the even older, bigger, stronger cities that would prove to withstand time.
ANYWAY I GOT SIDETRACKED BY SOMETHING THAT ISN'T EVEN IMPORTANT TO THE PLOT um-
So I know while they age the same way we do in line with their years (for example an 80 year old Hermetian looks like an 80 year old person from Earth) their years are longer than ours, and their seasons are fucked because their world doesn't work like ours (for example, their moon moves just like the sun, always opposite of it. Makes you wonder where the moonlight comes from *coughGodsarerealcough*) so they can't even judge the years by the seasons. The only thing that changes, besides the phases of the moon, are the stars, so they have to judge their years on the stars (is Midnight heavy in star imagery? Yes, yes it is). Where is this constellation now? and that sort of thing.
NOW HERE'S THE REAL PROBLEM. I basically already established that their days run on a 24 hour clock. So there's 24 hours in a day. How many days are in a week? How many weeks in a month? How many months in a year?
... These are things that I never established, even to myself. I know I want their years to be longer than ours, but not significantly. I just need to figure out where the extra time comes from, and how it's broken down into smaller units. Like we know Scar's rounds took him 2 weeks when he was still delivering blood, and he would deliver to Mumbo once every three months. I already established once every three months is roughly 4 times a year, so the extra time can't have more than ~14 months in it or much less than 12, but we don't know how months are broken into days and weeks and stuff so. I need to. Figure that out. I'm leaning towards a 13 month system just because I think it's funny to use 13 but I could just stick with twelve with each month being longer, base ten is a very common... well, base, so maybe a system of 10 days per week, which if we kept at 4 weeks in a month would be ~40 days and if we add a week ~50 which at 12 months a year would be 480-600 days in a year bUT-
As for how long after the Warden it was when Jimmy and Grian and Gem left the Alley, well 👀 That will actually be revealed in the next chapter.

[AFTG] The Fox Trap
I have a couple of things that I want to write next to these, however I am aware that it will be hard to do so with everything going on IRL, so I'm setting these as my main goals for now (might make a poll at some point this year to choose what i might work on next)
Writing Reflection
This year was a crazy writing year, if I'm being completely honest, and in many different ways. The biggest change for me this year in terms of writing was discovering the JBBingo, along with AUgust, they really both inspired and pushed me to create more writing content and I loved taking a part in both of them.
The goal of this year is to pretty much finish write and share more than I have done this year, so hopefully 250000~ or more words this time around.

House Republicans are taking the US economy hostage by threatening to default on the US debt—again—and they won’t say what their demands are or even who the Democrats should negotiate with.
The White House argues — quite reasonably — that the time to argue over what the government spends is when you pass a bill about what the government spends (i.e., a budget), not when the government has to raise money to pay for spending the Congress has already mandated by law. Republicans haven’t even come up with a budget yet. So they’re demanding negotiations over the debt ceiling, which is wrong in itself. But they’re not willing to say what their demands are....
[Meanwhile], the House Freedom Caucus is telling everyone who will listen that Kevin McCarthy is a chump who doesn’t control anything. If you want to resolve the crisis you need to talk to the people in charge … which is them, the House Freedom Cacuus.

I created a rune website
I have tried to write it from a modern Heathen approach, while still being based on actually historical information. It is split into two main parts:
The main part is my commentary on the Old English Rune Poem, and my attempts to contextualise the verses and interpret them in ways that can be meaningful today.
The other part gives a small bit of general background information about the runes and the poem, as well as talking through the history of runic divination and its Modern and largely racist roots (this is mostly based on the hard work by @thorraborinn, @mannazandwyrd and @obligate-rebel), and actual historic uses of runes in magic. I have also included some of my ideas about using runes for both divination and magic today (that isn’t just taken from Thorsson/List).
I have tried to take a somewhat different approach to what you find in most metaphysical sites/books you can get about runes today. I hope some of you find it useful!

A new design which I finished yesterday!
The text is a blessing I wrote, it's in modern English on one beast, and then my attempt at translating it into old English on the other, both written in futhorc runes.
I'm really pleased with how this turned out.

My #1 post of 2022

A knotwork design of Yggdrasil that I drew. The runes on the end of the branches are the initials of the names of the Nine Worlds (although I used the Anglicised ON names but wrote them in OE runes, because that's how I roll).
The runes on the trunk are a prayer I wrote then translated into Old English (written boustrophedon style in OE runes).

I’ll admit right up front here that I’m kind of a wimp when it comes to creepy stuff. I’ve never been into scary movies, and even cover my eyes during the fake surgery scenes in “House.” But on my first trip to Italy, when I heard there was a chapel in Rome which had decorated its walls with the bones of more than 4,000 monks, I knew I had to see it. Little did I know at the time, bone churches in Europe aren’t that uncommon.
Which is excellent news if you, like me, are on a mission to see all the bone churches you can.
Bone churches, more accurately called “ossuaries,” exist in several countries in Europe, and can consist of everything from piles of decorated skulls to pieces of wall art made up of various human bones. If you’d like to make a tour of Europe’s bone churches, these are the spots you’ll definitely want to have on your list.
Capuchin Crypt – Rome, Italy
Tumblr media
Since this was my introduction to bone churches – and a fine introduction at that – let’s have it be your introduction as well. Rome’s Capuchin Crypt occupies a tiny space underneath the Santa Maria della Immacolata Concezione dei Cappuccini church in Rome. And while it’s not a crypt in the same sense as the Paris catacombs, the walls of this series of small chapels are entirely decorated with the bones of Capuchin monks, so the word “crypt” definitely feels like an apt moniker when you’re there.
The soil in the crypt was brought from Jerusalem and is considered holy, so burial space disappeared quickly. To make room for additional people who wanted to be buried in that soil, they began removing bones of previously-buried monks and stacking them. Eventually, someone had the brilliant (well, I think it’s brilliant, anyway) idea of using those bones to decorate the walls.
“”As you are, we once were. As we are, you shall be one day.””
The crypt features the bones of more than 4,000 monks who died between 1528 and 1870. There are six small chapels in the Capuchin Crypt, and all but one is creatively adorned with bones. Furthermore, some of the bone-covered chapels feature predominantly one particular bone. For instance, there’s a “Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones” and a “Crypt of the Pelvises.”
My favorite bits of decor are the little grim reaper sculpted from bones, featured on one chapel’s ceiling, and the sign in the final chapel which says, “As you are, we once were. As we are, you shall be one day.” These may not be signs of the monks having a sense of humor, but they certainly make me giggle.
Sedlec Ossuary – Sedlec, Czech Republic
Tumblr media
Outside the town of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic (an easy and popular day-trip from Prague) sits the town of Sedlec, which may be famous for nothing besides its tiny bone church. Located beneath the Church of All Saints, the Sedlec Ossuary is – like the Capuchin Crypt – a massive collection of bones which have been arranged as art on the walls.
The ossuary was built in the 15th century in order to make room in the small adjacent cemetery for more burials, but it wasn’t until 1870 that the collected piles of bones were put to any kind of artistic use. That year, a local wood carver was hired to make sense of the bone chaos – but it’s unclear whether his bone art was exactly what the church had in mind.
“… a local wood carver was hired to make sense of the bone chaos – but it’s unclear whether his bone art was exactly what the church had in mind.”
Among the decorations in the Sedlec Ossuary, there’s a coat of arms on one wall representing a prominent local family of the time, and a massive chandelier (that actually works) hanging in the center of the room made entirely from bones. Not only that, the “artist” left his mark in bones – his signature and the date is crafted in bones near the church’s entrance.
Medieval Ossuary – Wamba, Spain
Tumblr media
The tiny town of Wamba outside the city of Valladolid in northern Spain is home to yet another giant collection of bones, and like many other bone churches the original reason for piling the bones up was a simple lack of space remaining in the cemetery. The Medieval Ossuary in Wamba is in the Church of Santa Maria and contains bones from hundreds of villagers who died between the 12th and 18th centuries.
Unlike some of the other bone churches, the Wamba ossuary doesn’t have walls or ceilings which are ornately decorated with bones. Instead, the bones are just in huge piles – they’re organized piles, but they’re piles. Researchers have studied the bones and learned a great deal about medieval village life in Spain, but since all the bones are mixed together it’s impossible to put together a complete skeleton of one particular human being.
“As you see yourself, I saw myself too. As you see me, you will see yourself. Everything ends in this. Think about it and you won’t fall into sin.”
The designers of the Wamba ossuary wanted to convey the same kind of message to visitors as the designers of the Capuchin Crypt in Rome, because a sign over the entrance to the ossuary/shrine reads: “As you see yourself, I saw myself too. As you see me, you will see yourself. Everything ends in this. Think about it and you won’t fall into sin.”
Hallstatt Karner – Hallstatt, Austria
Tumblr media
While most of the bone churches in Europe are filled with the bones of people who died hundreds of years ago, the ossuary in Hallstatt is different. The tradition in Austria has long been that graves are merely rented, and once the rental period is up bones are exhumed and moved to a karner, or bone house. The little Austrian village of Hallstatt is so small that the grave-rental period is a short 10 years.
“…and each skull has been lovingly painted with its previous owner’s name, profession, and death dates.”
One Hallstatt karner in particular, the Roman Catholic parish church, draws more visitors than just relatives paying their respects, as it has the skulls of more than 600 people on display – and each skull has been lovingly painted with its previous owner’s name, profession, and death dates.
While the last skull in the Hallstatt ossuary – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – dates from 1983, there are still requests today for individual skulls to be placed there after being appropriately dried and decorated.
San Bernardino alle Ossa – Milan, Italy
Tumblr media
In the high fashion capital that is Milan, you might not expect something as morbid as a bone church. But a few steps from the city’s famous Duomo is a church with a tiny chapel in the back that’s absolutely full of bones. The church of San Bernardino alle Ossa is unremarkable in most respects, but once you find the sign pointing you to the “ossario,” you’re in luck.
The footprint of the ossuary is incredibly small, but the ceiling soars overhead so there’s plenty of space on the high walls for the stacks of bones. For the most part, there’s nothing much that’s artistic about the displays – they’re essentially just carefully placed skulls and large bones. But in the two biggest wall panels, the large bones make up the background while the skulls are strategically arranged to make the symbol of the cross.
Capela dos Ossos – Evora, Portugal
Tumblr media
Bone churches by and large tend to be structures into which piles of bones have been placed. The Capela dos Ossos in the Church of St. Francis in Evora, Portugal, on the other hand, seems to be made of bones. The very walls of the chapel have bones in them, with cement holding everything together. Even the pillars supporting the ceiling have skulls running up and down them.
Built in the 16th century, the Capela dos Ossos (or Chapel of Bones) was built with the goal of pointing out how short life is. The poem at the chapel’s entrance emphasizes this, as it reads in part, “Where are you going in such a hurry, traveler? Pause … You have no greater concern than this one. … Recall how many have passed from this world, reflect on your similar end. Our bones that are here await yours.”
“Where are you going in such a hurry, traveler? Pause … You have no greater concern than this one. … Recall how many have passed from this world, reflect on your similar end. Our bones that are here await yours.”
Estimates are that there are roughly 5,000 bodies whose skeletons are represented in the chapel, and if that’s not macabre enough for you there are also two bodies hanging from chains – and one of them is that of a child.
Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo – Palermo, Italy
Tumblr media
For many, the word “catacombs” conjures up images of the underground burial vaults in Paris and Rome where bones are stacked along the walls. In Palermo, it’s something quite different. The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo are famous not just for the interesting way in which the dead are arranged, but also because of one amazingly well-preserved mummy.
Once again, the Palermo catacombs got their start in the late 16th century when the monks ran out of space in the cemetery. The climate in the underground space turned out to be ideal for preserving bodies, such that even some of the oldest skeletons in the catacombs still have some skin and hair left on them.
The last body to be placed in the catacombs was that of a two-year-old girl called Rosalia Lombardo, who remains so lifelike today that she looks like she could wake up from her nap any second and run outside to play – except she died in 1920. Rosalia’s body was perfectly preserved thanks to an embalming method which was, at the time, revolutionary. The specific formula was lost for decades, but was recently rediscovered – and what’s more, it still works.
St. Michan’s Church – Dublin, Ireland
Tumblr media
While this isn’t technically a bone church, it fits nicely under the category of places to see skeletons. The burial vault that was built underneath St. Michan’s Church in Dublin may not have been intended as the perfect place to preserve bodies, but the limestone walls have resulted in a space where nothing rots. So as the coffins around the bodies disintegrate over time, the bodies themselves are left exposed and largely mummified.
Many of the bodies kept under St. Michan’s aren’t on public display, but visitors still flock to see the room containing four caskets without lids. The bodies of the four are entirely visible, including the mummified skin, and two of the bodies were cut into pieces before they went into their coffins. One of the bodies in the vault is a nun buried 400 years ago, though she’s not one of the bodies that’s visible to the public.
Catacombs – Paris, France
Tumblr media
One of the most well-known collections of bones is also the largest and most-visited. The Catacombs of Paris contain a whopping six million bodies’ worth of bones spanning the walls of more than 300km of tunnels. You won’t see it all, and you shouldn’t try – but a guided tour is definitely something on many tourist to-do lists.
“The Catacombs of Paris contain a whopping six million bodies’ worth of bones…”
The Paris Catacombs exist partly because the city was running out of burial space, but also because cemeteries which were in the city limits were officially condemned because people living near them were getting sick. In the late 1780s the first bodies were moved into the underground tunnels, and it was opened to the public as a tourist attraction less than 100 years later.

THE LUCID, the four-piece hard rock band featuring bassist David Ellefson (ex-MEGADETH),vocalist Vinnie Dombroski (SPONGE),guitarist Drew Fortier and drummer Mike Heller (RAVEN, FEAR FACTORY),will apparently release a new song early next month. On Tuesday (December 20),THE LUCID shared an Instagram graphic of the group's logo along with the date of "1.3.2023" and captioned it: "#comingsoon". Ellefson confirmed earlier in the year that THE LUCID was working on new material as a follow-up to THE LUCID's self-titled debut album, which was released in October 2021 via SpoilerHead Records. "The Lucid" was produced by Heller and mixed/mastered by Lasse Lammert. Ellefson previously stated about the LP: "It's been a real blast making a record with these guys and I must say that it's refreshing to explore some new musical avenues… to step out a bit from what each of us have done stylistically in our own careers. There was an effortless synergy that came with creating these songs together which is always amazing when working with new people." During a November 2020 appearance on "The Chuck Schute Podcast", Ellefson stated about how he got involved with THE LUCID: "Drew sent me a track and said, 'Hey, can you throw a bass on here?' And I was writing a new ELLEFSON solo record at the time, so my studio ears were on. I was plugged in and ready to go. He sent it over and I was, like, 'Yeah, this is freaking cool, man.' I'd seen Drew play, I know his BANG TANGO history and the other stuff he's done. But this was really cool stuff that spoke to me. And then he called me up and he said, 'Hey, Vinnie is gonna come in and write some vocals and lyrics and lay down some tracks.' And it turned into a thing." "I love [Vinnie]. I love SPONGE," David continued. "He's such a rock star. He's just a cool guy. And he writes such great lyrics — very trippy lyrics. He's the type of lyricist I'd never worked with before, so it's fun with that. And Drew is a great guitar player. Mike Heller — he's good friends with [MEGADETH drummer] Dirk Verbeuren. And Dirk's, like, 'Mike's awesome.' They're good friends. We all met in L.A. We got the songs together and we all met in L.A. in mid-July [2020]. I plugged in and banged out 10 songs in two days. And it was fun. Mike was very good in the studio; he really knows his way around." As for THE LUCID's musical direction, Ellefson told VWMusic: "It's definitely a rock album. It may trend slightly into metal with songs like 'Damned' and 'Deaths Of Despair'. It’s not a thrash metal record. It's not a doom or a power metal record or any of that kind of stuff. I just think it's just a straight-up hard rock record." Fortier was diagnosed with testicular cancer in May and subsequently underwent surgery. Ellefson was fired from MEGADETH in May 2021 after sexually tinged messages and explicit video footage involving the bassist were posted on Twitter. David was in MEGADETH from the band's inception in 1983 to 2002, and again from 2010 until his latest exit. It got here from a powerful and sustained Irish assault that began all the best way again in their very own 22m space. Perhaps it was the magnitude of the event, however the Blitzboks had been getting a whole lot of the fundamentals improper, they usually weren't medical sufficient when offered with their first two try-scoring alternatives.  An error from an Ireland lineout, nonetheless, allowed the Blitzboks to pounce on the free ball and it was Muller du Plessis who scored on the stroke of half-time. Ronald Brown landed the conversion, and the scores had been locked at 7-7 on the break. The Blitzboks had been then punished for their very own points on the lineout, dropping two in a row,  permitting Harry McNulty to cross the whitewash for Ireland's second. As the match progressed, the Blitzboks had been changing into their very own worst enemies, and when a fundamental dealing with error allowed Jordan Conroy in for Ireland's third, the scoreboard learn 19-7 to the guests. You may hear a pin drop inside Cape Town Stadium. When Ireland scored their fourth, it was throughout, and scenes of spectators leaving the stadium earlier than the tip of the competition instructed its personal story. There was a late comfort strive for Mfundo Ndhlovu, however that by no means made something higher for the hosts. This one will damage. All issues thought-about, it was a day to recollect for Cape Town, with the town having solidified its repute as South Africa's premier Sevens vacation spot. The South African ladies had earlier given the house followers one thing to cheer. They misplaced their first recreation of the day, happening 14-12 to Japan, however they bounced again in type by thrashing Colombia 27-0 with Nadine Roos scoring four tries. They will now meet China on Sunday in a match do decide thirteenth place.  Scorers:SA 14 (7)Tries: Muller du Plessis, Mfundo NdhovuConversions: Selvyn Davids, Ronald Brown Ireland 24 (7)Tries: Mark Roche, Jordan Conroy (2), Harry McNultyConversion: RocheSF fixtures:MenIreland v New ZealandAustralia v FijiWomenAustralia v USANew Zealand v France [ad_2] Source link

Remergence. It's a word you see everywhere on the internet these days. Not in the sense of a swimmer coming up for air between strokes, but more like a bloated corpse washed ashore after not being loaded with enough weight to keep it down. Troublesome tweets, offensive interview clips, skits of racist comedy: these are the things that tend to "resurface" in the modern age. The moment they rise to the surface, the seagulls descend. The latest celebrity to be caught up in the "resurfaced tweets" frenzy is filmmaker and actor Taika Waititi. The 46-year-old New Zealander recently directed the Marvel blockbuster Thor: Love and Thunder, and made headlines on August 9 after his surprise wedding to pop star Rita Ora. Many have argued that the tweets, shared by Waititi nearly a decade ago in January 2013, were transphobic and offensive. After making a series of derogatory comments about a beauty pageant, she wrote, “No disrespect to men who want to be/dress like women. She should have just said that her makeup looks masculine.” In another tweet she wrote: “My trans friends can walk in heels. but you're right, real kathoey are more handsome." (“Kathoey” is a Thai term with a complex history of meanings related to transgender people, especially women.) Waititi was not a well-known public figure at the time (a small role in Green Lantern and his relatively unknown independent film Boy were his most notable credits), so the comments have not elicited any substantial reaction so far. Responses have ranged from disappointment, through demands for an apology, to somewhat cheerful condemnation. But even if we all agree that his tweets are objectionable, is it really good for someone to dive 10 years into the past to get a quick “gotcha”? These types of micro-scandals — that is, Internet PR mishaps that never threaten to jeopardize a career — tend to follow the same pattern. Once the offending material has circulated enough online, the celebrity is forced to own up to his mistake and vow to change, in a standardized act of self-preservation: repentance as brand management. In the past two years, we've seen this happen to celebrities like actors Neil Patrick Harris and Ellie Kemper, comedians Joe Rogan and Randy Rainbow, game show host Ken Jennings, and many, many plus. Not all of these transgressions are as serious as others, of course. I'm sure few would argue that Waititi's tweets deserve the same reaction as his use of the "N-word” by Rogan in the past or Harris' decision to serve a steak dish modeled after Amy Winehouse's decomposing corpse at a Halloween party. But the process is always the same and, in most cases, ends with a humiliated apology. (Waititi has not yet responded to the criticism she has received; The Independent has contacted a representative for comment). For many people, especially those on the political right, these public shaming displays are part of what has come to be called "cancel culture." Although the term is too often confused with the simple notion of accountability, there is no denying that there are cases where social media's thirst for instant exposure has inflated the seriousness of historical infractions. The more this happens, the harder it will be to convince those who speak out against “cancel culture” of the need for proper accountability from today's public figures. This is not to downplay the pain of people who are offended by Waititi's tweets, of course, but society's understanding of trans people and trans issues has evolved a lot even in the decade since his tweets, and language norms have changed to reflect this. Surely there are more urgent and consequential battles to fight. To some extent, the most pertinent critiques of Waititi and his relationship to queerness are contemporary. Waititi has worked hard to position himself as a force for positive change within the typically heteronormative space of blockbuster movie production. After Waititi told audience members
at a screening of love and thunder that the film would be “supergay,” queer Marvel fans were disappointed to learn that the film’s actual LGBT+ content was rather minimal (a same-sex kiss on the hand is the rare highlight). Some have dismissed his approach to his films as Thor from “queerbaiting” [promocionar falsamente que tienen contenido queer], as it uses the promise of queerness on screen as a marketing strategy, but then reneges on that promise in the final product. Waititi elsewhere seems to have encouraged queer fans to follow him. He currently stars in and produces the queer-focused pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death. In an interview with the magazine Out about the gay content of love and thunder, joked about being a "little gay icon" and told the outlet that "we're all queer" (meaning human). Perhaps this complicated relationship he currently has with queer, and with the queer community, makes his tweets from a decade ago all the more worthy of scrutiny. Or maybe it makes them a distraction. What is expected to be achieved with a retroactive public shaming? It could be that an apology, however perfunctory, is enough. It can be argued that even a fully performative apology is useful in the long run to renegotiate the limits of what can be said publicly. Gradually, reaction after reaction, the rudiments of hate speech drift away from the mainstream. In this way, perhaps we can view public shaming as an exercise in harm reduction. Still, it's hard to read the reactions to Waititi's resurfaced tweets and identify this kind of bigger picture. All I see is a man who said inappropriate things a long time ago, not knowing that his words would, or could, one day turn against him. I'm not excusing it. But at some point, we'll all have to decide if it's better to let the tide wash away the uncomfortable memories.
