HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND SABAN MOON
Ok so if you don’t know. Basically before sailor moon was localized in the 90s, Hollywood had the bright idea to make their own American version of it. They were trying to bank off of the success of shows like power rangers by mixing American aspects into the original Japanese footage. It was terrible and so it never happened. The only proof we had of it existing were a few low-quality clips from screenings and cels that were occasionally put up for sale
There’s an awesome article by Kotaku you can read here, I highly recommend it if you’re someone who likes lost media or just weird trivia in general.
BUT
YESTERDAY
IT WAS FOUND
After the destruction of shows from HBO this is a major victory for lost media in general and proof that no matter how much you try to bury your company mistakes, the internet finds a way.

Regarding Saban Moon - apart from the actual found footage itself - there’s one thing I still can’t get over:
Frank Ward, producer and copyright holder of Saban Moon, was contacted by this amazing lost media investigator lady who he didn’t even know and she was like “Hello, Mr. Ward! The Library of Congress has Saban Moon, but they need written permission from the copyright holder to give the copy to me so I can share it with the internet. Would you sign this paper?”, and he signed it, and it’s now on the internet. Name an other producer and copyright holder who would do the same with any other piece of media.

After almost 30 years, the lost pilot of the fabled ill-fated Toon Makers American Sailor Moon cartoon has actually been found! And to commemorate the occasion, I had to draw this version. Cheers to “Saban Moon” and rediscovering lost media!

Everyone's so excited about the discovery of the Saban Moon pilot that they're forgetting to mention the funniest part. We all assumed if it ever turned up it would be because a long lost copy was unearthed from someone's storage locker or private collection. Turns out it's been sitting in the fucking Library of Congress the entire time.

Some magnificent bastard tracked down the entire pilot episode of the infamous Toonmakers adaptation of Sailor Moon, known amongst fans as “Saban Moon.” If you’re not aware of the story, before Sailor Moon was dubbed by DiC a company tried to make an Americanized adaptation of the story that was a mix of cartoon and live action. It was decided that it would be easier and cheaper to just dub the original anime (because duh) and so only a pilot episode was ever made.
I’m literally in awe, like most Sailor Moon fans aware of Saban Moon I just assumed the pilot was lost to time. But thanks to one fan’s outstanding resourcefulness and dedication this piece of lost media has been found!! The pilot starts at 1:43:45.
