Only Friends: How Mew criticises Ray VS How Sand criticises Ray
Something I've really noticed since Episode 4 is the increasing distinction between how Mew and Sand school Ray. The scenes in Episode 6 and Episode 7 provide a perfect point of comparison. Both Mew and Sand use the phrase 'love yourself' towards Ray but the tone and delivery is completely different.
Unsurprisingly, what Ray desperately needs in his life is a mother figure. Someone who can be firm and stern when necessary but still caring at the same time. Sand's approach feels better suited to Ray in this respect.
Sand starts by acknowledging that Ray's hurting but it doesn't excuse his behaviour and it isn't going to stop Sand from calling it out. He makes sure to explain why it's problematic, why it's hurtful, why it's dangerous. Sand's words are driven by concern. He's even worried about the guilt Ray would have to shoulder if he did hurt anyone else.
Whereas in the scene with Mew, he makes immediate assumptions (I still maintain that Ray was not high here, he looked pretty darn sober throughout the bathroom scene to me), but that's where Mew's mind goes. His question "why don't you love yourself at all?" implies that Ray doesn't have any self-respect to take care of himself, and so what he's saying sounds driven by disappointment. Mew's tone also carries an air of exasperation, 'I've told you again and again'. @thatgirl4815 does a great job of commenting on Mew's attitude towards Ray in Episode 6 (here).
After Sand has said what he needs to say, he still doesn't want Ray to feel too bad. Sand's little pat on Ray's knee is an attempt to soften the blow, paired with a slightly helpless feeling of, 'I just want what's best for you'.
Now let's observe how Ray reacts when schooled.
Ray may not always implement the stern talking to he's getting, but you can tell that when with Sand, Ray is listening. He doesn't try to deflect, retort or dodge. He usually looks guilty. Guilt suggests remorse. Which means you realise what you've done is wrong. Whereas Ray's initial reaction to Mew is slight shock. This is the biggest indication to me that Ray wasn't getting high here. When he finally responds to Mew, it's brushed off with a laugh - 'yeah, yeah, I'm fine, it's nothing, no matter' - it doesn't seem like any of what Mew's said has really sunk in, just that Ray doesn't want him to dwell on this point any further.
How Mew delivers his pep talk feels authoritative, 'I told you to quit using drugs' (and you didn't listen). Your mistake is not taking my advice. On the other hand, Sand never once says anything along the lines of, 'I told you so, I warned you, I tried to stop you'. It's not about Ray following his orders, it's Sand providing Ray with the context to hopefully avoid making reckless decisions for himself in future.
Mew seems to have accepted Ray's inability to change, and his criticisms are merely a matter of routine at this point. Whereas Sand seems genuinely driven to encourage Ray to do better for both the sake of himself and others around him.

calling toji when you can't sleep bc the trees look like monsters
mysterious shadows danced across the off-white wall that faced the bed. it intrigued you how harmless things could turn sinister in a matter of hours. the trees swayed like monsters outside, and the wind howled like hungry, blood-thirsty wolves through the windows. you sunk deeper into your duvet, your body growing hot with anxiety and fear. it was dumb, the paranormal series you watched before bed.
it was all in your head.
the usual creak of the hardwood floors made your skin crawl. your eyes were darting in every direction as you formulated an escape plan. your chest was tight, and your breathing was quiet but quick, like a duck swimming. you couldn’t bring yourself to turn onto your left side, your eyes glued to the wall parallel to you.
you were officially frozen with fear. the fear of nothing and everything. your phone lay on the bedside table on the left side of the bed, toji’s usual side, although without him here, you were terrified. with a surge of courage, you quickly turned over, facing the empty side of the bed. you shuffled quietly and reached your arm out to grasp your phone. as soon as it was in your grip, you turned the flashlight on. the room looked exactly the same as you had left it before you went to bed 3 hours ago, but it felt different. most likely from the made-up scenario you composed in your mind.
you checked your messages to see if toji had texted, and to your discomfort, he hadn’t. so in classic fashion, you called him and put it on speaker.
“hey doll, what’s up?” his voice was gruff, but it warmed your skin.
“just wanted to check up, see how you’re doing...” your voice was shaky, and you cursed yourself for it.
“isn’t it 3am in tokyo?” he didn’t sound worried, and he had every right to—toji knew nothing was inherently wrong. but you needed comfort.
“uh, yeah, i just needed to hear your voice.”
he sighed, and you could practically hear him run a hand through his hair. “i know it’s hard, but i’ll be home in 2 days.”
toji then scoffed, and you could hear him rolling his eyes. “did you watch one of those stupid, scary shows again?”
you groaned, knowing he made fun of how scared you got. his laughter only heightened, and you covered your eyes with your hand, giggling.
“yes, and stop laughing at me. i’m terrified!” you confessed, your heart practically beating out of your chest as you eyed the bedroom door. “i wish you were here with me, toj.”
“2 days, and i’ll be back in your arms, saving you from the big, scary monsters that live in our apartment,” toji announced, his voice softer than when he first answered. you sighed, hoping the phone call would never end.
“listen, doll, i gotta go, okay? but 2 days.”
you smiled softly at his words.
“okay, i love you,” you mumbled, feeling safer and more content; the picture frames on the chest of drawers on the opposite wall stopped their random movements, and the shadows across the room stilled.
“love you too, and don’t forget to check under the bed,” his hysterical laughter was the last thing you heard before he hung up.

The Sign finale probably should have disappointed me, but... didn't?
It's been a heck of a run lately with Thai BLs that haven't quite stuck the landing, and it's got me pondering why The Sign worked for me despite sometimes feeling like a storyboard for a longer, better show.
I don't think they pulled off the emotional payoff they needed, despite that last reunion scene being so pretty and well-acted, simply because too much happened offscreen, from Khem's recovery from a gunshot wound to the entire multlifetime Tharn/Chalothon dynamic getting resolved without us seeing any of it.
But somehow I wasn't that mad about it? And ultimately I think it's because this show did so many things well and so many things I'd love to see more of that I'm just like, yep, I enjoyed that ride sirs, please show me something this gorgeous again. In that sense it's joining something like Manner of Death or Kinnporsche where it's like, plot holes? Yes. Bizarre tonal shifts? Absolutely. Occasionally insane writing choices? Uh-huh. Love it anyway? You betcha.
So here's what really, really worked for me:
Premise
I am always going to be onboard with QL that isn't solely coming-of-age or coming out. I'm not against those stories, of course, but give me gay romance with adult characters who know themselves and are doing adult things. I'm also a partisan for romances with high external stakes, so the mixture of crime and reincarnation was catnip to me.
Do I care that none of this training makes any sense? No.
2. Setting
Listen. Is The Sign the reason I have a document on my laptop titled "Imaginary trip to Thailand without ever seeing a beach?" Not exactly. But it's also not not the reason.
I am being willingly manipulated by the Thai Tourism Authority.
Kidding, kidding, but I do love when my Thai shows feel Thai or my Korean shows feel Korean, etc etc. I want to be driven to Wikipedia to learn more! Half the fun of watching stuff from not your own country.
3. Chemistry
I think @biochemjess covered what was underwritten about the romance in The Sign. Billy and Babe carried it on their backs and it was hard to dislike their romance, even when the series skipped over key beats.
Any time the pink lighting came out, you were gonna be in for a good time.
4. The camerawork
I don't know enough about film to speak intelligently about this, but the camerawork and aesthetics of this show were just so lovely to watch. It was really doing a lot. @chaos0pikachu wrote about it better than I ever could.
LOVED THIS. LOVED IT. So good.
We had some really lovely storytelling and visual parallels, too, like the first episode and finale both having a big action warehouse scene, or the multiple times that Phaya and Tharn ended up overlooking the Mekong river.
5. It was always kinda off the rails
I know some people felt this show started out with a strong premise and didn't live up to it, but I gotta say, I didn't have that experience. It was always kinda a bonkers watch for me. There were long training montages, random bodies in the shallows, missing genitals, extended performance art, that comedy flashback to Khem and Thongthai's college years... I never knew what I was going to get each Saturday. And I kind of loved that? I'm into unhinged.
I was comparing this in my head to Last Twilight, which did disappoint me in the end, and I think it's because Last Twilight was NOT always bonkers and DID set itself up to tell a straighforward story, then dropped the ideas it had been juggling in the last episode. The Sign always felt chaotic to me, so a chaotic ending was par for the course. This is where I'd compare it to KinnPorsche, which had the weirdest fucking ending, but like, okay??? Why not!
End result? I see the flaws, but I'm giving this show tender forehead kisses anyway. Here's hoping for more like it.

I'll probably add some of this in my next journal, but there's a few things that might be minor HRT effects that I'm only starting to notice now.
One is that I'm pretty sure the "contrast" of my skin color is a lot more. I'm very pale, but tan easily, and have a lot of light freckles, various moles I've had for life, and also an accumulated set of scars, bruises, scrapes, a farmer's tan, and more. All of them seem like they're getting more prominent, even though my overall skin darkness/lightness hasn't changed at all. It could be something subtle with pigmentation that's hard to put my finger on, or more likely, it could be that a thinning of my body hair has made other dark spots stand out.
Overall, I'm loving it. Moles and freckles are something I find very attractive, so seeing the dusting of freckles on my cheeks actually start to become visible has been really nice. It doesn't show in any pictures, but I'll try to fix that.

It does have the interesting effect of making my decade-old self harm scars, which I thought were close to fading entirely, come back more visibly. Doesn't bother me that much, but it means I gotta dodge uncomfortable questions occasionally. Nothing I'm not used to.
Although I will say, one benefit of leading an active lifestyle is that I have so many scars and bruises for legitimate reasons that they overshadow the self harm ones. I find it hilarious that I have so many scars that I actually got from things I used to use as excuses. I actually have scratches from cats, blackberry bushes, knife slips when opening large boxes, trips and falls, nails, and uh, nsfw reasons now, and they're all jumbled and intermixed with the old self harm scars. The only way to distinguish them is that the self harm scars form the classic "barcode" pattern of perfectly parallel lines, whereas other scars are more random.
Again, doesn't bother me too much, but it is interesting to note.

Cpc is always about redemption and stuff after all. But now I'm genuinely wondering if Leland should actually be executioned. War, abuse, torture, those should get life sentence right?
So I'm guessing he's going to prison then? Fancy words sometimes gets me mixed up.
OH!! IT GLOWS BECAUSE OF HER KINDNESS, I'M ASSUMING? THAT'S AMAZING. Also the fact that she offered to help the man who just tried to kidnap her...We don't deserve Gwen fr.
So, uh...Blaine? Yeah where is he? I'm theorizing that the tent Nell moved will save him but he should still have some injuries. And the chances are he will break at least one bone. I don't think tents are that soft. But I'm willing to hope that he will be perfectly fine....physically.

Saw the I can do it with a broken heart anon and uh here's my two cents for The Bolter and the dual symbolism of 'bolting' (essentially, fleeing) in Taylor's music.
Anyways, The Bolter gives me Now I'm running down the hallway and you know what they all say. When you're young, you run, but you come back to what you need. Just. Running in Taylor's music. How it's both the most romantic and heart wrenching thing depending on the context. Just the overwhelming urge to let go and be free, for the worse or for better.

these are good thoughts bestie but candidly a big part of me thinks the bolter could be more about... someone else running from problems while she stayed 🙃

I had 911 playing in the background while I was working on some stuff and realized that the 6b buddie is full of callbacks/parallels to 509 past is prologue, especially some of the toni and clive narrative beats.
Clive is shocked by his car and bumps his head. He has a sort of 611 “in another life” moment when he mistakes hen for toni and then tells the story of how he used to know her
Clive referenced toni’s “armor” and her fear of letting romance into her life because she’s “taken a lot of shrapnel”. Sounds like eddie to me.
During the 509 casino robbery talk, toni explicitly said “a fool and his money are soon parted” (loosely) linking buddie via buck’s math superpowers and the poker date in 613 to toni and clive’s love story. Remember toni fell in love with clive but chose hen and her first husband. This feels connected to eddie in 615 focusing on his past with shannon via chris instead of choosing his future with buck and chris. I know he has good reasons for being stuck in this mode but still an interesting connection to the toni/clive story.
We got our intro to eddie chris and telenovelas in 509 when eddie compares the drama of toni and clives multidecade saga to a telenovela. He showed great interest in learning the story, giving ideas for how to help clive and toni rekindle their romance, and hoping for a happy ending. We see eddie and chris actually watching one in 615, the very ep where eddie was thinking about the past with shannon (along with chris) and having an emotional reaction to buck feeling seen by natalia and also trying to date her.
There was also the whole 509 hen and toni conversation about glimpsing a better future but being afraid to step into it because of family duty and feelings of guilt/shame. Hen said toni was sad and felt alone in her marriage and that clive was her second chance at a happier future. This basic sentiment feels directly tied to eddie now in s6. We could argue that eddie felt alone and isolated plus the guilt/shame of choosing fear over parenthood/partnership back when he was with shannon. Now that he’s on the precipice of something romantic with buck circa 615 cemetery scene, he’s probably feeling alone and guilty again because he hasn’t expressed his feelings (which his healing arc kinda requires) and is in a holding pattern just waiting for something.
Hen told her mom in 509 to seek happiness now, despite the mistakes of the past. Tia Pepa basically did the same thing in 614 with eddie.
509 is also where we got the chloe and gabi emergency call. It was all about gabi running from/not really facing her problems. But also about finally not running/leaving when things got tough with the pen thru chloe’s chest. Sound familiar?
Then there was the whole gem during that chloe and gabi rescue about needing to save one of them before being able to save the other. Plus oil (something rich and precious) trying to get out but being contained by the weight of the people holding it in. *screaming in 615* I could say more about the symbolism of all that in the context of s6 buddie but I gotta sleep eventually lol
Then in the 509 closing scenes:
Toni: Hi! Sorry I’m late.
Clive: But you’re worth the wait.
If this isn’t buck and eddie i don’t know what is. The 615 cemetery scene felt like eddie loudly waiting on buck to see him and understand his feelings. But nope. Buck’s not there yet and eddie needs to speak/express.
Uh, Yeah. So in summary 509 was doing a lot of work to set up key themes and issues in 6b. I’m here for it 🤡🤡🤡

This is so sweet, I love them almost as much as they love each other.
The sweet moment is interrupted by Hunter, who apparently spotted Eda & King riding on shooting star. The pursue on their staffs, Camila getting a ride from Amity and perfectly representing what I think 99.8% of all people would be like the first time they rode of a flying staff.
They land in Bonesborough, finding it to be abandoned and desolate. There are signs of life, with yet more graffiti and vandalism that has taken place since after the Day of Unity. In this screenshot in particular, there is a drawing of The Collector’s symbol, as well as warnings to run and hide or ”they” will find you. Presumably, those star minions The Collector sent out before. Most doors and windows are also boarded up, to keep those minions out.
There is something about how this is an almost post-apocalyptic scenario that is symbolized by a bunch of bright, colorful cartoon stars being lodged in the ground, roofs, and walls everywhere that I find… entertaining, I guess? Not sure how to describe it.
I don’t know what it is about this image, but it makes me feel like I’m gonna throw up. Or maybe I just need to lower my screen brightness.
…NOPE! Still utterly terrifying and horrifying and a bunch of other synonyms for ”disturbing” and ”scary.”
Hunter noticed a wall of sparkles come flying towards them ,and the gang narrowly managed to tae cover before a huge wave of magic washed over the town square. The result once it subsided was this sugar pink nightmare. Just like what we saw happen with Hooty and Lilith earlier, we see here that at least a good portion of the Boiling Isles’ population has been turned into puppets.
I’m pretty sure that’s one of Willow’s dads there on the left. And once the camera pans a bit to the right, I spot two students from Hexside.
So. Does this mean The Collector and King are close by, brought here during their game of Owl House? And The Collector decided to spruce up the place a little so it wouldn’t look so drab and miserable?
Hurray! The easily manipulated god is here to save us from the situation he… put us in… huh.
I was right, The Collector, and King were in the neighborhood and this is all part of the game. The Collector arranged for this nice, idyllic town to be attacked by the horrible Owlbeast so that he and King could swoop in and save the day!
I gotta say, this image actually goes kinda hard. And you know what? I chose to believe that in this one instance, the background music is diegetic. If The Collector can conjure up everything else, then they can make some heroic music to underscore this triumphant moment.
(so, uh… Eda’s looking a lot more… faceless than usual. what’s up with that?)
…turns out that what was up with that was that that was not Eda at all. Not even the Owlbeast, but rather Terra in disguise.
I legitimately burst out laughing when I saw this. This was so funny to me.
On a slightly more relevant note… The Collector uses a ”light glyph” to subdue the beast and make it turn back to normal. Kinda like how Luz in The Intruder used her newly discovered light glyph to make Eda turn back to normal. I do wonder, I do wonder… it’d be kinda interesting if The Collector and King’s game of Owl House actually paralleled the plot of The Owl House. It’d kinda make sense for King to use story beats inspired by the real adventures of him and his family.

I claimed the Fairchild twins. They’re triplets and I love them. It’s so much fun.
Everyone’s ready for twins, everyone’s nervous enough and then boom triplets. Matthew just about fainted. Everyone just about fainted.
The irony of wanting girls for so long HAVING the girls and then a random ass boy to finish it off.
Their middle names are Marigold (middle name) Jessamine,Thelma Charlotte, and Peter Lewis. Take the “Charlotte named her kid after herself to the next level”. I’d say it’s fair considering the triplets could not look more different than their mother.
They got to tell Jessamine they named their little girl after her. She pretended to be unbothered but she was so touched. After all she did, after all she put them through, they still love her so much they named their baby girl, the baby they’ve wanted for so long, this beautiful, precious baby is named after her. They still see so much good in her they connect their daughter to her forever.

Also all Henry and Charlottes boys end up homosexual. It’s just the vibe. The fruitiness is really.
They look so much like their father. There’s no “ooo the consul must have cheated” rumors when you look at them. It would make more sense to whisper that Henry cloned them in a lab. Poor Charlotte had five kids and NONE of them look like her. They’re all taller than her at like. Ten.
They’re so exhuberant. So passionate. So weird. Every time Matthew try’s to take them somewhere they take like eight years off his life. “Hey lemme just climb onto the side of this bridge, no no no, this is safe, I gotta see that rock, yes I’ll come back aFTER-“. The shadowhunter world was so not ready for them.
Really I could go on. There is no question I can not answer about any of these guys I love them so much <3<3<3

[This is related to this post my sleep-deprived brain decided to write up after pulling an all-nighter recently.]
Which Hermits would be able to hold a baby properly? And how would they behave with a kid? Let's find out!
(And remember, this is he c!Hermits, not the cc!Hermits. Half the cc!Hermits are parents irl, but most of the c!Hermits are NOT. So that's what I'm basing this on. :3)

Doc - Oh my god he can absolutely hold a baby properly, and he's also likely to bluntly correct the way someone else does it if they're doing it wrong. He gets quite excited about kids, actually, and practically melts when there's one in the vicinity. The dude turns into a puddle of goo if a baby smiles at him. But he'll also turn on a dime and get pissed and deadly-scary if he thinks someone is about to hurt a kid.
Bdubs - Loudly proclaims that he can hold a baby properly. Isn't entirely wrong. He's mostly got it right and he's surprisingly more careful than some of the other Hermits might be. He's an absolute PRO at getting a baby to sleep - but he also forgets his own volume, so the second someone else tries to take the kid from him or the second he thinks someone else is gonna wake the baby, it's Bdubs' own loud voice that wakes the poor kid up in the end.
Etho - He can hold a baby but he looks awkward and uncomfortable the entire time he's doing it. He's likely to hand off the kid for someone else to hold, but he also quietly enjoys being in the same room while it's happening (though he'd probably not admit it openly unless asked directly). Despite his hesitance to hold a baby, Etho somehow also has Dad Reflexes, in that if he sees a kid about to fall or get hurt from across the room, he'll be across the room in half a second to stop it before it can even happen. Ninja Dad Mode Engaged.
False - Similarly to Etho, she's more likely to feel uncomfortable being put in charge of a kid. It's like a completely foreign language. She'd be the most awkward babysitter ever. (Also might forget that kids shouldn't have swords in her desperation to find an activity to keep her ward busy.) She not exactly the type to actively choose to put a kid in danger, it's just that she Does Not Get how kids are supposed to work.
Cub - Definitely can hold a kid properly, though he doesn't boast about it like Bdubs. It's one of those things he just Knows How To Do and nobody knows where he learned it. He's pretty chill if he's gotta take care of a kid. He treats the task with the same level of interest as any other project he might undertake. Also likely to talk to a kid like they're an adult. (Also might involve them in a mild prank or two, but nothing reckless. Just innocent fun times!)
Scar - Shockingly good with kids, and can hold a baby like a pro. He's still a little accident-prone so he's had moments where he drops a baby and manages to catch them with vex magic. No kid has EVER been hurt in his presence but he's certainly given other Hermits a heart attack with how close he's gotten. (But being dropped and caught seems to make the kids laugh so - no harm done? I guess?) He's also amazing at telling stories because his brain is full of them...and he's also prone to Disney Movie Marathons if he ever has to babysit.
Grian - Oh god. Uh. Can he hold a baby? Yes. Should he hold a baby? Absolutely not. This man is too chaotic and inattentive to be responsible for a child. I mean look how Grumbot turned out! The first one had an existential crisis and got locked in virtual reality, the second one banished most of the Hermits to a parallel world for a few weeks (and might have killed Scar in another life), and the third one plotted world domination before he was destroyed. Grian would likely take a real kid for flying joyrides even if they were far too small for that kind of thing. No. Do not. Give. Grian. A child.
Gem - This woman can absolutely be trusted with any child any day of the week. She's naturally good at it, though sometimes she might get nervous and ask for help just to make sure she doesn't do anything wrong. Not that she needs it. She's gentle when she needs to be, but also fun-loving and high energy if a kiddo needs play time. She also LOVES to play dress-up and pretend...no surprise there.

Excerpt from “The Chikamori Legacy”

It was about twenty minutes later that Phil came out, “I put up the rest of the left-over cookies.”
“Great.” Haruo gestured towards the car…and tossed Phil the keys. “You drive.” Phil looked surprised as he caught them, “You’re gonna be driving your own car from now on…” Haruo explained. “So…better get used to it.”
It was disconcerting for Haruo to not be the one with the steering wheel in his hands.. No licensed driver likes to put his own life in the hands of another but Phil was a safe driver regardless of his idiosyncrasies. He kept to the posted speed limits and used his turn signal indicators before making turns and changing lanes.
It, however, was a very relieved Haruo who sat in his former car when Phil parallel-parked his vehicle at the bank branch in Maple Ridge to go withdraw 500.00 from his savings account.
The money passed hands and it was off to the Maple Ridge ICBC branch to draw up change of ownership papers to the title of the car. Phil grinned, “…my car…Aaaall mine…”
letting out an insane laugh.
“Uh…sir? Any chance that you might want to re-test this individual?” Haruo put on an appropriate air of nervous tension as the female clerk, to the side of the man who had just helped them with the changeover of title to the vehicle, giggled. Phil shoved him out the door as Haruo mouthed the words “Help!” trying to make a frantic grab for the door handle of the ICBC office.
Phil safely got him to Dennison Chev-Olds and as he came to a stop, he looked over at his friend.
With a big smiling grin on his face he said, “Haruo, I want to thank you for selling me this car. You are a true friend for selling me this car and…”
he counted on his fingers for a second, “I can never truly repay you for giving me freedom to get to work and back. So I have five words to say to you right now in this very instance…” his grin grew even wider.
Haruo grinned back, “Awww, it was nothing.”
“Get out of my car!” Phil chuckled evilly. Ah, the love of true friends. They both cracked up laughing. Phil’s sense of humour was always razor sharp. “I gotta get to work.” Phil finished off.

Maglor & Maedhros - i'm gonna combine them because they're almost identical on this bingo
well what can i say. they're my favourite tragic feral war criminals
absolutely in love with their dynamic, aesthetic and the way they parallel each other
However I'm not the fan of fanon that focuses on "tragic" and entirely ignores the "war criminal" part, especially with the third kinslaying and kidnap fam
since we're on the third kinslaying, i have Opinions™ that kinda clash with the popular fanon so I don't really venture out of my bubble

OKAY SO, I have a hyperfixation on pokemon again, so YOUR HEADCANNONS WHAT KIND OF POKEMON WOULD HASHITOBI HAVE >:33
AA I NEVER PREPARED FOR THIS QUESTION I GOTTA DO RESEARCH
uh uhm before research i think tobirama would have oshawott as a starter. they just fit. and hed keep that baby as his best friend 5ever.
and hashirama starter would be snivy. an EXTRA sassy snivy. his bbg. shed smack him with her tail when he was being stupid.
ok ok research time
Tobirama:
Vaporeon - originally this was a joke but the more i thought about it the more i thought it fit. probably evolved on accident. tobirama had a water stone necklace given to him by his late mother. he interpreted the eevee's accidental evolution as a sign. he named her Tsubaki to honor his mother.
Marshadow - sneaky bastard latched on to his shadow when he was visiting the nara for a diplomatic meeting. he didn't notice until two weeks later when he discovered they were the cause of his reoccurring nightmares. lil guy just liked his moves too much. named "Shika" in honor of the nara.
Gyarados - tobirama loves fish of course he'd love fish pokemon too. probably found it as a kid and kept it as a pet until he was given his first pokemon. when he realized he could battle with it he jumped at the chance. its name is Koi.
Samurott-Hisui - not the original oshawott that he started with, but one that he found in a mission to hisui. his original oshawott fucking died. killed by his dad as a punishment for failure. he refuses to give it a name out of fear of growing too attached to it.
Lycanroc-Midnight - gifted to him by his aunt on his birthday, originally just as a rockruff. he didn't mean for her to evolve into her midnight form. wrong place wrong time type deal. he takes her with him on missions with more bloodshed. Laika.
Zoroark-Hisui - also found on his mission to hisui, as a freshly "reborn" zorua. would have killed him if it werent for his lycanroc. they exhausted themselves half to death fighting, and tobirama decided to take pity on the poor thing despite its attempts to end him. it grew attached and refused to leave him alone, so he gave in and caught it. it named itself Rust.
Hashirama:
Sawsbuck - nature deer. what can i say. it fits. he raised it from a fawn after its mother was shot. her name is Bambi because i SAID SO.
Serperior - his 1st pokemon! he loves her soooo much (reminds him of his brother) haha uhh who said that. anyway she sleeps on top of his face at night like a cat. it wakes him up in the middle of the night. he still calls her Snivy despite the fact that she's evolved twice. she doesn't care
Torterra - "Torterra's large and clean shell supports the lives of many small Pokémon, which occasionally gather and build their nests upon the shell. Some are even born and spend their entire lives there." konohagakure parallel. even though his other pokemon can't fit on its shell anymore, they still like to curl up on top of it.
Swampert - mudkip itama found when he was tiny, and asked hashirama to heal. hashirama kept it for itama's memory.
Virizion - smthn smthn fights against humans for pokemon. symbolism? hashirama just attracts legendary pokemon.
Zarude - healing monkey :3 an old man that got abandoned by his pack after sustaining an injury they couldn't heal. hashirama took him in and nursed him back to health, even though he got fucked up from all the biting and yowling in the process. he doesn't fight, even though he wants to.

hi yes this is incredibly late b/c work is shit tm but better late than never amirite
anyway, something about this chapter that leapt out at me immediately was Maki’s “uh, we are kids.” because i’m pretty sure something similar was said a couple chapters back (i can’t remember the exact instance though) and it seems to be a recurring theme in tpg: people being put into roles they don’t quite fill, not through any fault of their own, but simply because they cannot. gojo’s deification by jujutsu society is one such example, but it wasn’t something he had a say in, while nobara by comparison appears to have voluntarily taken on the task of acting(!) like an adult. she does, thankfully, end up joining maki & gang on the playground, but her conversation with higuruma undoes some of that progress:
“You treat me like a kid!”
“You are a kid!”
“And that’s enough reason to shut me out?!”
oh, higuruma… your intentions are kind, but your lack of tact is almost cruel. i think nobara’s response, coupled with the next line (“…brought a cannon and she’s not afraid to swim”) are very telling of her true feelings: even though she hates the fact that higuruma’s a murderer excluding the fact that his boss is worse, she is aware that he’s her parental figure now, and seeks (as all children do, especially those who were denied of it) emotional validation from him. higuruma really tried to pull the “being a child is not a sin” card but nobara didn’t hear the ‘not’ part lol. i find it depressingly ironic that his attempt at shielding her from the ugly truth of humanity & the entire mess with the sheriff end up widening the rift between them—it’s not… a terrible idea, in theory, but their circumstances are unique: nobara’s trying to understand & rationalise why the person she’s stuck with as a father did what he did, but she can’t do that if she’s missing some of the puzzle pieces. more accurately, higuruma won’t give them to her because the picture they complete is bleak, but she doesn’t know that!!!!
“I don’t know, Nobara. You deserve better than this.”
“You’re right, I do! But you won’t even try!”
… yeah sure kugisaki “you’re not my dad” nobara. and then, as if on cue, her phone rings with a call from her actual dad. the way she has to fight the urge to answer the call is nothing short of heartbreaking. she has to quash her own hopes, before her dad does it for her.
AAANDD THEN THEY HUGGED. THANK YOU FOR THIS. the part where higuruma wonders whether he’s about to be socked in the face reminded me of toji and maki’s hug in ch4 (yes i remembered), cus toji thought the exact same question. is this intentional please say yes. nevermind your answer is irrelevant i’m gonna start drawing parallels anyway /lh. toji & higuruma both start out extremely rough around the edges and knowing fuck all about parenting; maki & nobara both grew up with parents that didn’t love them. at least maki & toji had something to bond over (beating the shit out of other people. uh, curses. i mean curses.) nobara and higuruma on the other hand…….. lol
Also I didn’t miss the way Nobara was saved from a curse!!!! again!!!!! but the group shrugs it off, you know, as kids who literally just exorcised a curse by themselves do, and nobara’s too preoccupied with her crush on maki to feel all that offended. okay all jokes aside i think it really helps that they’re her age + she’s already interacted with them prior to this; she’s in a much better mental state than when higuruma first found her. i think it’s really cool that nobara has even more people fighting for her, which is exactly what she wants; she just hasn’t realised it, and i hope she does someday. (on an unrelated note: gotta love how maki takes centre stage and cleaves the curse in half though… her using yuuji’s sword as a platform to power herself thru the air is just 👌)
Does Nobara have anyone like that?
Yes. Yes, she does. Chi you’re drawing so many parallels here and I’m gonna throttle you. please don’t pit higuruma against a special grade…unless it’s toji, that’d be funny. who lets their kid bring a sword to school anyway?? tbf, it’s Phantom Guardian; i adore the idea that yuki’s cursed energy is with her, at all times…
btw yuuji is my fave if the pfp wasn’t obvious enough, and i cherish every crumb of his characterisation i get. i love the way he’s able to de-escalate any social situation because of how emotionally perceptive he is. kinda want to put him in a room with yuuta and maki and see what happens lmfao 💀💀

you're totally right that "uh, we are kids" was said in an earlier chapter! maki says it to megumi when toji gives the kiddos the stuffed animals he got for them at the zoo, and maki suggests they play with them:

Come on. Maki slants an eyebrow. “Uh, we are kids.”

megumi is another child who had to grow up way too fast before gojo took him in, and now has to make up for lost time that he doesn't know quite yet how to reclaim. it's so cool you noticed this parallel between them, because it's gonna be super important in the upcoming chapter!!
it's so true that all of the tpg kids (and initial teenagers that are now in their low twenties) had some aspect of childhood taken away from them. isolated from the villagers, nobara tried to shed her own childlike qualities because she thought she had no choice but to take care of herself, especially because of the yet-to-be-revealed circumstances of her parents' disappearance.
and god....yeah, higuruma really has no idea how to handle that. i've said it before and i'll say it again: it's so, so important to me that he's genuinely terrible at this. he's the pinnacle of right idea, wrong execution: he wants to fix the ills of society but does it in the worst possible way, and he wants to shield nobara from how dark and terrible the world is by telling her she's just incapable of understanding it altogether. he doesn't want her to know all the pointless cruelty in the world. he doesn't want her to know he killed the sheriff to free her from the countryside. higuruma shutting her out is his way of protecting her, but the way he carries out his protection almost does more harm than good. almost.
PLEASE THEIR HUG....you're not delusional to draw that parallel between nobara & higuruma and maki & toji!! nobara and maki are the two tpg kids that have the most on-screen clashes with their parents, yet despite their initial doubts towards their parental figures, they still crave that emotional validation. after a lifetime of being shunned, finally, someone cares about them -- only nobara is half-convinced higuruma doesn't. i think some part of her does know he cares, but it's a part she refuses to acknowledge because she doesn't want to be let down by her father. not again.
nobara's confrontation with the curse was so!!!!! i really wanted to follow up with yuuta telling maki that nobara cares more about actions than words, so maki demonstrates her sorcery abilities rather than just saying it. maki's words post-fight, however, do end up having an impact on nobara: she's able to correct any misconceptions before nobara even has the chance to draw them. this will also be important as nobara's character develops!!
maki carrying the phantom guardian with her stems a lot from toji's desire for her to be able to protect herself, even in his absence. especially after the kids meet mahito in shibuya back in ch12, both nanami and toji don't want their kiddos to be unarmed, hence why yuuji also has playful cloud stuffed into his backpack.
YUUJI MY CHILD. MY SON. his emotional intelligence + crumbs that he blames himself for his family's doom even though it hasn't even happened yet. the first yuuji angst moment of many, many, MANY more
as for higuruma vs some special grade where he'd have to hurt himself in order to protect nobara...huh. yeah. sure would be interesting if that happened someday
