Typography Tuesday

In spring 1999, printer and designer Vance Studley, director of the Archetype Press at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, led a workshop of 27 designers on a typographic experiment. The result was this collection of typographic prints, Mythologies, A Typographic Journey, published by the Archetype Press in an edition of 52 copies. Of the process, Studley writes:

The subject of this book contains a daring premise; one in which typographic forms are used in graphic arrangements of mark and space to enhance the receptivity of the reader. Each designer selected a myth embedded in culture and then extracted a portion of the myth to arrange in purely typographic form. Pictographs, or pictures could not be employed to lead the reader into making his or her own sense of the excerpt. One had to arrive at imaginary or real connections based on language and its visual structure on the page to embellish the story by means of signifier and signified.

The completed work was printed using metal foundry type, wood type, and polymer digital fonts, with over sixty custom-mixed inks. Our copy is yet another donation from the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick.

#ft my poorly drawn monstera leaves for vibe #I was thinking abt shinx and luxray like. I know theyre supposed to be lions but I feel like cheetah or serval would work well too #like with electricity and stuff. wouldnt speed and agility make more sense for an electric type? esp a cat shaped electric type?#maybe it would be ok for luxray to be heavy built because itd be really big by then. but I thought hey it would be cool if its preevolutions #could focus on speed for escaping. escaping and hunting yknow #maybe this is just because I watched a cheetah documentary last night and thought they were cool #I also have a hc that luxray can charge up electricity and make its whole body glow like an x ray #like you can see it’s bones through the blue parts of skin. either as a threat display or courtship #the shinier and bluer the fur is the better you can see the bones. which would mean its feeding itself well #but Im not a biology expert Im just using what I learned from birds LOL #so sososo normal abt luxray line (is my favorite pokemon)#my art #myart #pokemon #illustration #shinx #Luxio #luxray #luxray line

I also think the eggs having this much sense of self and acting like kids forming relationships that sort of thing was not something the fed planned and was firmly the Islanders doing like they could have just taken them in as what they originally where am event to be rewarded at the end but instead they said no these are our kids and so that's what the eggs became not experiments or an event that can be over in a couple weeks but kids with emotions and personalities all their own and I think the feds didn't expect that and doesn't really understand it

#spewpa #i've started trying to make these photo posts instead of text posts just so the photos of the pokémon show up in my notes #instead of just the letter A. but now apparently tumblr has made it so that the “create post” keyboard shortcut when you press C #instead of popping up a list of post types for you to choose. just instantly creates a text post #so i have to use the create post menu at the top of the queue. which is ever-so-slightly more annoying #i dunno why they're trynna push this “post neue” stuff or whatever they're calling it when they can't even get it to display in the notes #correctly. i like to know which post is getting which note without having to CLICK ON IT #i've been doing this for a while but it's just. only today did they change this keyboard shortcut #anyway. spewpa. the middle child before one of my favorites #we'll get there. this is just a thing

Typography Tuesday

Last month, the Milwaukee Public Library's Arts & Media Department held its first Art Book Club session. Intended as an informal art book appreciation club that meets once a month in the Art, Music, and Recreation room, each session explores a different theme by looking at the wide variety of art materials in the collection. The collection is historical, non-circulating, and vast. I attended and spent an hour and a half mesmerized by the array of luscious materials presented.

There was design, architecture, fashion, and much more. As a type nerd, I was especially drawn to the several late 19th- and early 20th-century type specimen books on the tables. Here, for example, are some pages of chromatic initials by various European and American companies from Schriften Atlas, compiled by Ludwig Petzendorfer and published in Stuttgart by Julius Hoffmann in 1898.

MPL held its second Art Book Club session on the theme of "Animals" last night, but I missed it because I was conducting an evening instruction session. Dang! But I'll be attending future sessions when I can and I'll keep y'all apprised.

Heard something about Beowulf earlier and thought of this post, especially the xenomorph bear. Unfortunately, since tumblr has apparently just decided to make posts from deleted OPs completely unsearchable on any platform or something now, I can't find this post to reblog it, but thankfully reddit and pinterest had image backups.

#I'm actually seriously starting to be irked by whatever they did to change how posts from deleted blogs are handled #in the past even if the OP's blog is gone I could type a word-for-word search into google and have it bring up a reblog or two at least #but ever since whatever change they made so that deleted-OP posts no longer display images/videos or the contents of reblogs in the notes #that no longer seems to work #like a major draw of this site is that old posts keep circulating as long as people reblog them even if the OP is no longer around #but that's not gonna keep working if those posts are getting nuked from orbit

Yeah I'm always doing important research for my comics v.v *spends half an hour seaching for a maxima online shop and ends up browsing the rimi online shop for a dish soap brand I can use as reference*
