Goddamnit, my old archive of photomanips lost a lot when I got rid of my flickr subscription. I can’t find my Twilight parody, where the first book cover is holding a pad instead of an apple. “Twatlight: New Moon Cycle”.
If you’ve been with me for ages and happen to have the image, please send it to me. I have to impress Neighbor-J with my clout.

I wrote a whole long thing about JKR and the way people talk about HP now vs at the time, but I’ve decided I probably won’t post it after I saw a black woman blogger point out that if it was the wrong time for JKR to bring up her gender critical ‘talking points’ (which it was) then maybe it’s also the wrong time for us to be talking about it and endlessly discussing that JKR thinks this and thinks that. And you know what, she’s right. It likely wouldn’t have added anything anyway so I’ll leave it in drafts for the forseeable.
I will say though, that as someone who grew up being taught by my Evangelical church that Harry Potter was deeply evil throughout the early to mid 2000s, it’s very ironic to me that Evangelicals probably really approve of Rowling now. My church copied a lot of what US Evangelicals were stressing about which means I’ve rarely met another person raised in a UK church who experienced this kind of utter hysteria about a book, which is a weird and lonely feeling at times. My mum did not agree with this particular hysteria. One time on our computer files I found a letter she had written to the pastors (she was of the common view at the time that HP books were great because kids loved them and were reading more because of them, despite being an Evangelical devotee as well, which kept me grounded in a sense of reality about what the books actually were), where she pointed out that the magic in HP is actually so removed from what we think of as occult that the entire universe could be transplanted into a sci fi world and little about the premise would need to be changed. I don’t know how it went over with the pastors or if she received a reply. (I shouldn’t have read the letter of course, it happened because our family computer didn’t have individual accounts at the time and I was just opening things in the doc folder I didn’t recognise...which is kind of a jerk thing but not the same as deliberately reading someone’s mail, I feel.) At my church kids were lauded for ‘confessing’ to the congregation that they had been ‘tempted’ to go and see the latest Harry Potter movie by their friends, but had resisted temptation. A girl in our breakout group for young teens explained to us wide-eyed that JKR had apparently said ‘I’m coming for your childrens’ souls!’ (I believed this without question). This stuff seems incredibly fucked up when I look back at it, because I know that when I was told something was a sin, I internalised it very deeply and became afraid of it, and I expect all of the other kids in the church did as well. The only time it didn’t happen to me was in this case because my mum, who I trusted more than the church and the pastors, did not believe HP was evil. But the other kids’ parents did believe it was evil. It must have been way more confusing for them, and I wonder how they feel about it these days. I’ve noticed a thing that I consider quite disinginuous, where a content creator is labasted on tumblr and probably other social media for saying ‘maybe the backlash against Twilight was overdone and misogynistic’. People lash back with ‘but why didn’t this person mention the racism against Native Americans? How dare they defend this book?’ but when you see what the person is actually saying they aren’t saying ‘this book has no problematic elements and should never be criticised ever!’ They are saying ‘I was there for the Twilight hate phenomenon and maybe took part in it, now I see that the most vicious and visible hate of it was largely routed in hatred of teenage girls and I regret taking part in it’. I didn’t have anything particularly invested in vampires when Twilight came out and wasn’t online much so I can’t say I was there and I didn’t take part (my abuser did, for a long time he had a hiLARious profile pic that said ‘Twatlight, where vaginas sparkle!’), but I feel pretty sure that not only were the loudest critical voices of Twilight not bothered at all about the representation of Native Americans in the books, they were actively drowning out Native voices who wanted to talk about the issue! So I feel like criticism of the Twilight backlash is not contradictory to talking about the problematic elements of the books like racism. But the trouble is some reactive people online seem to take ‘this wasn’t as bad as people said’ as ‘I personally love it and it has nothing wrong with it’. That’s a very long way of saying I hope I can talk about the utter confusion and weirdness of growing up being taught HP was evil without it seeming like I love HP now and want to defend its creator....no, I just think ‘maybe kids should not have been told HP was evil’ is something I still may want to say. Kids shouldn’t be taught any piece of media is a loosely defined, creeping influencing sinful evil, it just happened that HP was what the big bogeyman was at th time and if I’d been around in the 80s it would have been D&D. It will be something else now.
