I'm sure this has been said before, but I love the way Wheel of Time characters' mistakes and flaws are justified in the moment by results, then punished or played out later in aftershocks. Most characters who do something shitty are, in the short term, rewarded for it. It's a very straightforward "your enemy can't kill you if you cut off all their limbs in front of their family" that's balanced by Jordan's signature dose of "but watch out!" as the family tears down your plan outside your notice.

I very specifically think Rand, Mat, and Tuon are a great example of this. All of them are incredibly smart, tough, and EFFECTIVE. That's the key: they get things done. Point them at a problem? No more problem. Of course, in Jordan's butterfly-effect world, the solution causes a new set of problems, but that's exactly what makes these characters compelling. Their solutions are incredible and efficient and somewhat low on friendly casualties, but (if I may venture a guess) Jordan's war experience refuses to allow easy, effective warfare to go unpunished. If you are killing people and it's easy, you have done something vile and wrong in the process. That's the message of Dumai's Wells, of Rand/Illian vs. the Seanchan, and countless other slaughters: there's no shortcut that doesn't leave you worse than before, even if that takes time to manifest.

The only reason Egwene isn't on this list is because she engages in less open warfare. However, there's another point to be made about how Jordan writes consequences for actions during any kind of power struggle. Maybe I'll do that later or you can write it in a reblog.

My point is, I love the way Jordan makes it obvious how characters can justify doing bad things. It works for them! They were going to die, and then they didn't die! Of course you keep doing something, even something you know is wrong, if it keeps you alive and safe! That's just what having a brain is like! It's like a million iterations of the beginning of Ender's Game: kick your enemy until they're down, then keep kicking them until you know they won't get back up. Maybe they'll come back tomorrow, but you can sleep easy tonight.

If you're going to hate Tuon for being a slaver empress, you need to hate Elayne for the same reason. Oh, you really think lifelong servants aren't slaves? GTFOH Oh, you think Elayne only ruled Andor and wasn't trying to conquer the world? You didn't read the same books I did. Oh, you think Elayne is neat, so we should cut her some slack because she didn't choose her role in the story? Tuon is also neat and also didn't choose her role.

Call that a Geo Political Polycule.

(Alternative title: Olver can have SO MANY PARENTS. As a treat.)

As promised, here is my opinion on the WoT Polycule, as a celebration for my book club hitting AMOL. You might have to click and enhance, in order to see some of these: I spent a long time trying to finagle a version of the map that was readable.

(The only note I would add is that I couldn't find anyway to add the red line between Mat and Elayne that reads 'The Line Between Flirting and Annoyance is Paper Thin'. But like. It's there in spirit.)

Also this is by no means an exhaustive list my WoT ships even with these specific characters: I mean Asmodean dosen't appear ONCE! But to me this would be the 'ideal' dynamic for both these characters, and the future of Randland. So....it's actually just a ship? Or is it an armada, if it's a polycule?

I may come back an add more extensive explanation for each Relationship in the Polycule at a later date, but for now I am content to leave this hear for your enjoyment.

Guys. Not saying Tuon isn’t problematic, but honestly? I think she’s gonna be fine, post-series. I think a LOT of things are going to change for the Seanchan. Tuon seems to be taking two steps forward and one step back. She’s fighting like blazes to keep her worldview from being completely shattered. Yeah, it needs to be shattered, but that’s a hard bit of growing. Necessary, but hard, and I can sympathize with her struggle. She’s been trained to believe bad things, but she doesn’t, I think, have a bad nature.

Three quotes that I think are important:

“She’s Aes Sedai, Mat told himself. Oh she can’t channel-she hasn’t let herself learn yet. She’s bloody one of them anyway. And I married her.”

“‘The...Aes Sedai...may not like this,’ General Galgan said. He too hesitated upon using the term Aes Sedai. They had started using the term...by Mat’s order, one that he’d expected Tuon to rescind. She had not.”

“’I suppose you give me the opportunity...perhaps the mandate...to follow where my heart would choose...”

Okay, so the first quote. Yeah, that’s only Mat’s pov, but I think the inclusion of yet is important. Because, that isn’t wishful thinking on Mat’s part. He hates being around the One Power. He’d be a lot more comfortable, if Tuon couldn’t channel. But, she does and he’s gotten to know her. He knows it’s a matter of time.

And that second quote really does validate his faith in her. She’s not insisting that the Aes Sedai are “marath’damane.” She’s acknowledging, if not accepting, their term for themselves and, with it, their world view. In an indirect way, yes, but that’s still significant.

She’s learning slowly, but steadily. I mean, the whole thing with Egwene! Mercy, mercy I LOVED the near cat fight they had. I love Tuon’s shock at learning that Egwene was once held as a damane. Tuon doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve, but I think this moment rocked her more than it seems. I think, once the pressure of the Last Battle is past, she’s going to be doing some heavy reflecting.

How can you consider people who can channel dangerous animals, after Egwene’s noble and epic death? What sort of “omen” will Tuon consider that? I was sad to see Egwene die, but turned into crystal? She’s going to be the stuff of legends and that’s not something Tuon is stupid enough to just brush aside!

Also, does anyone else think Tuon is just not the type to turn down a challenge? She’s not easily manipulated, but can Tuon turn down being directly dared to do something? I can’t see that. Egwene dared her to put on a collar and I think that would have happened, if the later books had been written.

And that last quote! Man, that was such a beautiful moment. Tuon is torn between doing what is right for her nation, for the world, and her love and trust in Mat. After all, if she goes back, and they lose, there’s no more chances. But, she wants to go back and stand with Mat. No matter what she says later, no matter how she tries to bury her attachment to him, she really proves here that she does love him, even though her head and her training warn her against it. And she is just so relieved, and scared, that Min gives her an excuse to choose Mat.

And, last but not least, MIN. I love Min. Min, the girl who calls the Dragon Reborn a sheep-herder. A girl who wears pants and shrugs off social mores that don’t suit her. She’s Tuon’s Truthspeaker. She’s allowed to openly criticize and argue with Tuon. It’s a shame those later books weren’t written, because I imagine Min would have some saucy things to say about a’dams and dacovale and a ton of other things. I really think she’ll bring Tuon down to earth a bit. Honestly, she and Mat are the best things that could have happened to Tuon.

I feel like it's hard to have an unpopular opinion on Tuon because even those who like acknowledge her wrongs (on tumblr at least).

Maybe that in the show they let Tuon be a villain? I have a few preferred routes for Tuon, one where she eventually (and I do mean eventually) realizes she was wrong and tries to fix things with varying success (but even if she does, I don't want her to be completely redeemed, you can't read Egwene's scenes as a damane and want that). But I do think just making her a villain who never changes her mind despite every chance too (like the book) would be interesting AS LONG AS she gets defeated in some way (not like the book) particularly by Egwene. I think the framing of her corruption of Mat and his incorporation into the Seanchan empire could be shown as much more sinister than the book framed it too.

to explain the third option more, i'm thinking like she starts out leading a storyline among the seanchan (whether in their conquered westland territories or in seanchan proper) and doesn't cross paths with mat/other main characters until a later season. so, the audience has gotten to know her on her own before she meets any of the other characters, sort of like daenerys in GOT (at least from what i can remember of the handful of seasons i watched 10 years ago).

WoT Musing: The Destruction of the Empire and Tuon's non-reaction

While I've made my peace with Sanderson, really I have, I feel like it's worth something that one of the major ways I think he missed the mark with Tuon's character in the last three books was not giving her any grief or turmoil about the destruction of the Empire.

Tuon barely gives any thought to the fact that the entire Imperial Family has been wiped out, along with the half the imperial court, and the Seanchan continent plunged into chaos and anarchy. Tuon who loves the Empire and it's people more dearly then her own life, who has devoted her whole life to their well being. Tuon who finds anarchy and chaos horrifying, who justifies all of her actions on the basis of the order and stability that Empire brought, never really spares any thought for the fact that a thousand years of that order and stability have been shattered.

We never get a Tuon PoV written by Jordan between Tuon's release and her discovery of the news, yet I can't help but feel like it would have been a major part of her character development had Jordan kept writing. The very foundations of Tuon's whole world have been shaken to their core, almost literally, and yet....Sanderson never really tries to reflect on it. Never shows a crack in Tuon's confidence or a measure of self-reflection, even though Tuon demonstrates both when Jordan is writing her, for much smaller things.

Like so many other characters and ideas, Sanderson simplifies them for the sake of expediency, and while that's understandable to an extent, it also diminishes the series in the end.
