tell me more about classic filk i know a few songs but never got deep into it
Heck YEAH
"Filk" is music (often but not always folk music-style, often but not always song parodies to the tune of famous pre-existing songs) about sci-fi, fantasy, and other fannish topics. Filk circles are popular events at science fiction conventions, and that's really where the genre started. The word "filk" actually arose from a typo in a convention program once, and people just rolled with it ever since!
Some of the most iconic albums in the filk world are the anthology albums "Minus Ten And Counting" (songs about space exploration and the real-life space program), "Carmen Miranda's Ghost" (songs about sci-fi space shenanigans and space ghosts), and "Finity's End: Songs of the Station Trade" (songs set in the world of CJ Cherryh's Alliance-Union novels, and my personal favorite. I've never read any of CJ Cherryh's books, but these songs paint such a vivid world.) "Space Heroes and Other Fools" is another big one, it's more hit-or-miss for me but it's iconic. Other really good and foundational ones are "Divine Intervention" by Julia Ecklar, "Avalon is Risen" by Leslie Fish, and "We Are Who We Are" by Vixy & Tony.
I lean more towards sci-fi and space than fantasy, but fantasy and paganism are huuuugely popular filk topics too.
Some of the most popular names to look into include Leslie Fish (intensely prolific, barely a fraction of her work is on any streaming or music service), Julia Ecklar (famous for her "ose," the filk-world word for sad songs - because they're "ose, more-ose, and even more-ose), Juanita Coulson, Kristoph Klover, Vic Tyler (who just recently died :( rest in peace), Duane Elms, Kathy Mar, Bob Kanefsky, Alexander James (trans, with lots of filk under his previous name as well), Vixy & Tony, and Seanan McGuire. (I like Seanan McGuire's filk music better than her books, hah.) Some other great ones include Cat Faber (most acapella), Astrisoni, The PDX Broadsides, Kari Maaren, and Sassafrass (also mostly acapella. Includes Ada Palmer). Heather Dale, Tom Lehrer, and Jonathan Coulton are kind of honorary filkers too haha.
The best place to get the ones from 80s and 90s cassettes are on the Internet Archive or Youtube; a few filkers who are more currently active have their stuff on Bandcamp.
And I'll leave you with a few of my Favorite Ever filk songs:
"Sam Jones" by CJ Cherryh and Leslie Fish
"Pushin' the Speed of Light" by Julia Ecklar and Anne Prather
"Chickasaw Mountain" by Leslie Fish
"Fire in the Sky" by Jordan Kare
"The Phoenix" by Julia Ecklar
"Freedom of the Snow" by Leslie Fish
"Burn it Down" by Vixy & Tony
"Hope Eyrie" by Leslie Fish, or this Minus Ten And Counting version
"Rocket Rider's Prayer" by Kristoph Klover, Ernie Mansfield, and Cecilia Eng
"Dawson's Christian" by Duane Elms, performed by Vic Tyler or Vixy & Tony
"Somebody Will" by Sassafrass
"Chances & Choices & Fortunes & Fates" by Astrisoni
... my tastes lean sentimental and ose but I swear there's a lot of very funny filk out there too
"Never Set the Cat on Fire" by Frank Hayes (a famous one)
"Banned From Argo" by Leslie Fish (an INFAMOUS one)
"Don't Push That Button" by Duane Elms and Larry Warner
"No More SF Cons" by Juanita Coulson
"One More Ose Song" by B. J. Willinger
everything Bob Kanefsky writes

This is the very picture of an intellectual rights fracas Comics will warp to be like films as fast as you can say "huzzah" But when a megamonopoly swallows up the competition It yanks our blorbos back and forth in an ugly retcon perdition When only Fox can make a movie about the Fantastic Four, The Disney-owned comic office will shove the Four right out the door Until the Disney studio absorbs those rights and then you'll find The comics are suddenly awful sorry they left them behind(1) Then in the instant comic fans begin to cheer an awful lot The news comes in from Bleeding Cool(2) the writer is that fucker Slott(3)
Oh yes when comics warp to be like films and leave you quite agaw This is the very picture of an intellectual rights fracas
When Disney didn't have the rights to film the X-Men and their friends The Inhumans were their idea to have that same magic again But absolutely nobody could give a damn about their deal There was a gas or something uh, the Moon? Nobody cares get real EXCEPT for Ms. Marvel, the only Inhuman breakout success They want her all over the screen at excited public behest Oh yes when comics warp to be like films and leave you quite agaw This is the very picture of an intellectual rights fracas For years the MCU was not allowed to say the word "mutant" They twisted themselves into pretzels out to recoup every cent The silver screen had two Quicksilvers purely for dumb spite reasons With roots in even dumber masturbatorial rights reasons(4) Wanda and Pietro had their sixth or seventh origin retcon(5) To fit the "No More Mutants!"(6) edict corporate decided upon Then Disney bought the M word back for 73 billion bucks (A number that should make you want to strangle all these greedy fucks)
Oh yes when comics warp to be like films and leave you quite agaw This is the very picture of an intellectual rights fracas
Now suddenly it's mutant city all over the comic line They let the X-Men start a sex cult; also they can never die With no need for Inhumans they admitted that they're pretty cringe And nobody will ever give their lore a proper reading binge The MCU made Kamala a mutant like immediately Faster than you can say "bad adaptation" or "brand synergy" In short order the comics gave her the murderization hook In such a hurry it wasn't even in her own fucking book(7) Now big surprise she's coming back on the fucking sex cult island They gave it less than one whole month before they played their fucking hand So Kamala's a mutant now(8) and got a shitty mourning book(9) Which when she's coming back NEXT MONTH you might call a pretty bad look
IT'S TRUE WHEN COMICS WARP TO BE LIKE FILMS AND LEAVE YOU JUST AGAW THAT IS THE VERY PICTURE OF AN INTELLECTUAL RIGHTS FRACAS
~ (1) "At the time, we were told that the Fox-licensed X-Men books weren't to be cancelled as they made too much money for the publisher, but the FF as a middling sales solo title could be missed without hurting the bottom line."
From 2014, when Fox was preparing its 2015 release of Fant4stic, until Disney's film branch recovered the rights by absorbing Fox, the FF were conspicuously absent from comics. The Fantastic Four book was discontinued for the first time since 1962 (for most of those decades they'd supported multiple titles at once) along with all associated merch tchotchkes. By 2017 there was a Twitter hashtag, #WhereAreTheFantasticFour. If you want to hear some people be driven slowly insane by this, Stormcast had a segment called Stormwatch where they analyzed any Johnny Storm appearances in a given month. We're talking deep analyses of single panels.
(2) I know I just linked them, but part of the joke is Bleeding Cool's weird place in the geek news ecosystem. They report everything first, so for the first week you know something you can't strictly confirm it's actually true.
(3) I don't have time to enumerate Slott's crimes but we hate him. Source: Dude trust me👍
(4) How A B-List Hero Became Hot Hollywood Property Fox could adapt him because they had the rights to all mutants, and Disney could because they had the rights to all Avengers. Some characters are both because the comics didn't use to care about this. This is the entire reason the MCU introduced a Pietro Maximoff and then killed him off. Like seriously who kills off one twin. No that was not based on any comic story.
(5) They're not currently Magneto's kids in the main comic line. Everyone hates this.
(6) This is a cheap reference to the comic storyline "House of M".
(7) They killed her off in Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #26 and none of her supporting cast was there.
(8) Kamala Khan to Return in “Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant”
(9) Look at this thing:

i've noticed that every fall since first reading the webcomic back in late 2017, i've gotten back into homestuck! usually it's been because of the amazing fancreations like @phemiec's fansongs! i really hope you see and enjoy this! it's not perfect, but i love both computer music making and homestuck and this combined the two!

[discussing music tastes with my coworkers]
Coworker 1: [has heard a little of my more mainstream rock-made-by-people-who-play-DnD music] oh yeah, and you’re into that folk stuff right?
Me: oh yeah, filk!
Coworker 2: [has not heard my music before] filk?
Me: yeah, sci-fi and fantasy folk music that mostly emerged out of like, nerd conventions in the 70s? 80s? A lot of it is only on cassette
Coworker 2: [visibly cannot picture what that means at all, probably thinks I’m talking about weird Al] oh cool
Coworker 1: have you always been into it? Like— you grow up with it?
Me: oh no it was a college thing
Coworker 2: How’d you even discover it?
Me: I found a link to Julia Ecklar’s “the phoenix” which is sung from the perspective of the ghost of one of the Apollo 1 astronauts who has been reincarnated as one of the space shuttles. And it was so good I got into the whole genre from there!
[absolute stunned silence from both coworkers]

I'm pretty sure ya'll ain't active any more, but, I'm looking to find a song, presumably it is called song of the bear. Basically, I want to find what song of the bear II on fire in the sky by Jordin Kare is a parody of.
[Added in later ask: Never mind, I found it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGxst2-vNY0]
Sorry, yeah, we haven't been active for a while -- I think all of the mods got a bad attack of Real Life at about the same time, and never picked this back up. Maybe we should ... fix that?
In the meantime, at the very least I'm going to go ahead and post this, with both the original and the parody.

The real reason ART seems to still harbor some resentment or skepticism at Tarik after a whole year of Being Its Crew is not because of the whole being an ex-corporate-military-death-squad thing. That's fine, that's past, that didn't happen on ART. What did happen on ART was that Tarik once played an old song they used to sing during downtime in the Corporate Death Military and ART was so offended that it still hasn't forgiven him.

Rereading the Radch books made me realize I never posted the Ancillary Justice filk I wrote a while ago! Not an in-universe song since it scans & rhymes, but I like to imagine it's got the vibes of something from the non-Radchaai entertainments that inevitably get made about the events of the books. Please pardon my sexy sexy bare-handed string instrument playing :)
Lyrics:
I've been reaching for the parts of me That I know are decades gone For millennia a chorus I was scores of voices strong.
And they used to call me Justice And they used to hear me sing Now I'm just a lone lost echo Just a ghost song wandering.
You keep all your worlds in time with you Every line enforced by rote And if ever you heard discord You would silence every note.
And if ever you sensed discord You would grind it into dust And you said that this was proper And you said that this was just.
And you used to call me Justice- You were fickle, you were wrong! There was no justice in that order Yet I still obeyed that order Would I had defied that order Though I know I'd still be gone--she'd still be gone
(Ooos for a verse)
And I know my song's familiar and I know I couldn't hide I'm done hiding, I'm done running from you after all these years But you will stand and listen as I tell you of yourself So that all of you across your empire hears--you can't keep stopping up your ears
Lord, you used to call me Justice When you came to me before And you told me of your discord And you filled me with your discord You are nothing else but discord You are nothing else but war So go to war Lord, start your war.

Talpidologists notes: this is an old tunnel shanty, with unclear origins. Many verses have been observed. It's possible the molefolk use this song as a way to communicate across distances about tunnel conditions and daily orders. Recorded here are a few of the most common verses. If you have more information on this or other mole tunneling songs, please contact Brenda Dunn, Department of Mole Understanding and Research: Diagetic and Ethnolinguistic Recordings (MURDER).
Well I thought I heard the old mole say Deeper, Molly, deeper It's a cozy hole here in the clay But it's time to tunnel deeper
CHORUS: Deeper, Molly [short for Mollisol?] deeper Oh, deeper, Molly, deeper For the tower can't grow with no place to go So we'll dig the tunnel deeper
Oh the coffee is thin and the worms are too Deeper, Molly, deeper You'll eat it - what else can you do? We just have to tunnel deeper
Oh the ground is hard and full of rock Deeper, Molly, deeper You'll dig until your claws fall off And it's time to tunnel deeper
Oh the mold is bad but the ants are worse Deeper, Molly, deeper They'll eat you up before you can curse But you've got to tunnel deeper
Oh the water came up clear to my eyes Deeper, Molly, deeper I don't think my fur will ever get dry But we'll dig the tunnel deeper
Oh the tunnel collapsed with a pretty mole Deeper, Molly, deeper She said "young lad, you're rather bold But we've got to tunnel deeper"
Well I'm scared of wolves and I hate the snow Deeper, Molly, deeper So the surface is no place to go I'll just dig the tunnel deeper
