thinking about how cool and awesome moon stone cassandra couldve been if she wasnt given the world’s worst villain motivation

dropping my whole au / rewrote of season 3 below

uh preface is im sleepy and its almost midnight, so like sorry if some parts dont make sense or whatever

uhh basically, instead of cass trying to like reach her destiny or whatever as like her Main motivation and the only reason to why she Evil and Malicious ive changed it so its more mixed in with her desire to protect rapunzel. i think moonstone cass is cool and i like the idea of her but i really just think her execution was poor mostly because it wasn’t built up as much as it shouldve been.

rewrote cass’s character slightly just so there more empathize on her idolization of her mother, and so when she learns the truth of why mother gothel left her, the knee jerk reaction to blame raps makes a little more sense.

Anyways, Season 3 cass deals with a lot of her issues, i think on the journey to get the moonstone something something happens and cassandra is told that if rapunzel comes in contact with the moonstone she will Implode. Like die. Return to being the sundrop. and cass is like oh fuck, shit, balls, I need to Protect her from Dying. So out of her intense Need to protect Rapunzel she yoinks the moonstone, and (still slightly pissed at raps for stealing her mom but not really she’s just trying to figure out her emotions + rapunzel needs to get away away from this rock) she goes into Evil mode.

Her villain arc is partly fueled by her anger at her own situation, always in second place. her desire to feel love and cherished and important rather than being the 2nd option. However, it is also fueled by her need to provide safety to her friends ,, even if it’s not the smartest choice. Moonstone Cass devotes her entire identify to being the cliche villain, so no one feels bad if like the solution to destroying the moonstone is killing her. she knows that logically the Zhan Tiri is manipulating her but 1. she idgaf and 2. she needs to learn how to control the moonstone’s power so she doesnt hurt her friends.

Tbh boiled now, it’s just cass isnt obsessive with mother gothel and mother gothel leaving her to kidnap a baby because it made like no sense for her character. like instead, moonstone cass grabbles with her identify and place in the world, who she is outside of rapunzel. Also she wants to learn more about her past, yknow, who mother gothel was and is she Worth getting upset over. spoiler she figures out that no, her bio mom sucks booty

Anyways, throughout my version of season 3, cass is trying to figure out a way to destroy the moonstone. She visits Rapunzel often too and pretends to be evil just so she can check in. She angry at her mom but not so much on rapunzel, maybe a little bit but probably more to with simply trying to crave out her identify outside of rapunzel. Same general plot beats happen in s3, but shes more grief driven than anger driven i suppose.

Theres probably a lot i forgot to like, reformulate in this especially w s3 bc i havent had the time to rewatch it and collect my thoughts that well. But, uh, hope u enjoyed. might yap more about my personal gripes with the show and how i think it shouldve been written.

also to add on i suppose, at the end of the series she gets exiled from corona officially, but lowkey comes back to hang out and after like a year every1 is like yeah okay i guess.

So, guess what I watched lately.

So in The Last Sun, Rune talks about how Adam can't be his tallah, and we find out why in The Hourglass Throne. The spoilers start here: what if both Brand and Adam are his tallas, the only way he and Brand connected for the first time was because in the future Adam would be there. Meaning Rune and Adam were always meant to, and always did, go back in time to that night. Runes tallah bond broke in the past with Brand because Adam and current Rune return to the current time.

Just some random thoughts while rereading the books.

Sure she turned evil or whatever but Cassandra totally had a point. She spent her whole life training and waiting to be a lady in waiting for a lost princess who might never even fucking show up. Having to give up her dream of being in the guard for this.

Then the princess DOES show up and whilst Rapunzel is kind, she has no idea the kind of privelege she has over Cass. Rapunzel has so many choices that Cass never even had a chance at. And she's always constantly, albeit unintentionally, rubbing it in Cass's face that she has it all. Money, the fame of being a lost-now-found princess, power, and worst of all...

Cass learns that her very on mother abandoned her to kidnap Rapunzel. Even her own mother didn't care about her, chose Rapunzel over her! The person she'd trained her whole life to serve in a role she never wanted to play, was her mother's favorite too.

Rapunzel. Rapunzel. Rapunzel. It's always Rapunzel. Rapunzel the princess. Rapunzel her boss. Rapunzel the recovered princess. Rapunzel gets the magic powers. Rapunzel who has has to fight to save. Rapunzel her mother's favorite. Rapunzel. Rapunzel. Rapunzel. Always her, never Cass. It's never about Cass.

She probably felt abandoned her entire life. By her mother's abandonment, by her father in his denial of her dreams, by the community who forced her into a role she never wanted in the first place.

All I'm saying is, it's no wonder she snapped. All she wanted was for someone to pay attention, to care about HER for once. Even if the attention is negative, she desperately needed it.

Spoilers for The Eidolon and The Tarot Sequence by K.D. Edwards below the cut

I am screaming!!! Having reread the whole tarot sequence just before (and for Hourglass Throne, concurrently with) the Eidolon, one of the things that was slowly grating at my mind was Queenie. I was uncomfortable in the first place with the idea of Rune and Brand having a live-in help that seemed to have no personality, but I kinda chalked it up to "men writing women" and "it's convenient to explain who takes care of the chores". I was not happy with that, but it seemed a minor frustration compared to how much I loved the other characters. On reread, I found most of the female characters pretty developed, and it made Queenie all the more grating. Which is literally what I was thinking when she was once more tasked to take care of Corbie in the Eidolon, barely a footnote... I had this exact thought in my mind when the reveal with Quinn happened. It blew my mind. K.D. Edwards - who I'm very sorry I ever dismissed as writing more for the characters than the plot and as not great with female characters to boot - just toyed with my expectations and played one of the most impressive trick I've ever fallen for in a book. Hats off, well done sir, I can only aspire to that level of diabolical genius

I've been rewatching TTS again recently and I can't even begin to imagine how draining it must have been for Varian to be stuck in prison at 14 after losing his dad

Honestly who thought it would be a good idea to stick a child in jail

can I just say that I fucking love how practically everyone in the fandom just completely rejects the idea that Rapunzel and Cassandra could be considered sisters in any way?

I'm glad the majority of us seem to be in agreement that Gothel kidnapping Rapunzel and literally keeping her prisoner for 18 years is absolutely not even remotely equivalent to adoption, which the argument that Raps and Cass are "adopted siblings" entirely hinges on.
