You really should know about Storm "Daniel"
Unlike how much all of us Greek blogs notify our tumblr communities about the regular (at this point) arsons wildfires afflicting Greece, we did not say much about the floods the country has been suffering from right now. There was a mention here and there and I even made a joke post as the storm was starting but not a lot of stuff in general. So, I think there's a couple of things you should know and I feel like I could address about it and actually it's not just about Greece. So I believe this could interest a lot of people and it should be something known worldwide.
In the beginning of September there was an alarm about an extreme weather phenomenon forming above the Ionian Sea at the west of mainland Greece. In truth, the phenomenon was not caused by the climate change. It was just a very rare occurence where a high pressure atmosheric system was sandwiched between two currents of low pressure. Low pressure systems are the ones resposible for stormy weather while high pressure systems generally create stable weather. As the low currents encircled the high pressure system, the storm that had started forming became unusually stable for a storm. As a result, the storm moved northeast above Thessaly and other regions of the central part of Greece and... just decided to stay there for an indefinite amount of time. Furthermore, because it's September and the Ionian Sea had warmed up throughout the summer, the medicane (Mediterranean cyclone) gained tropical features as it was forming, pushing its intensity to extremes unknown to this area.
The storm remained above all of central Greece for about 4-5 days but at the meantime it was causing side-storms in neighbouring countries, such as Bulgaria and Turkey. Both countries suffered from floods causing damages and deaths.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Tsarevo, Bulgaria (CNN).
Four people died in Bulgaria and seven in Turkey.
But like I told you the core of this was exactly on top of Greece's central mainland and islands. So what happened there? I happened to experience this shit first hand. My recollection of it is that it was unlike any other storm I had experienced before. My knowledge on meteorology is not very advanced, however I believe due to the high pressure part, there were actually no winds at all - or they were insignificant, so it wasn't like what you might have in mind as a conventional cyclone. It was a rainstorm but it was like a rainstorm from hell. The crucial part is that in Greece summer violent rainstorms may last for about five minutes but certainly not for five days nonstop. There was no pause, not even for a second. It kept pouring and pouring in indescribable volumes, without decreasing or slowing down, not for a moment. The fourth day it started taking short breaks.
As a person with a phobia of lightnings since childhood, I kept wearing earplugs throughout all these days. For four days, ten seconds did not pass without at least one lightning shrieking exactly on top of our heads. In the end, I am dead serious, I think my lifelong phobia has been cured somewhat due to this extreme exposure that eventually had a numbing effect. I think only the first day there was a record of 7,000 lightnings. I believe there must have been dozens of thousands overall. The lightnings also caused fires but the downpour was so overwhelming no fire could ever stand a chance.
Whether during or after the rains, what I was seeing outside was post-apocalyptic. The only thing missing was the zombies. It really looked like a background from a videogame, including a constantly lit up sky. I was not in danger though people dear to me were. The worst for me was a huge fall in the quality of living but that doesn't matter. The rains caused severe destructions across cities and villages. They caused floods, they broke bridges, they broke a massive number of roads, they made walls collapse, they destroyed springs, they damaged water and electricity outlets entirely, they drowned flocks and flocks of animals, they destroyed mountainous and coastal villages alike, they made cars float and fly over each other and they uprooted houses.
Tumblr media
Village in Mount Pelion, Greece.
But that's not the end of it. Four days later, the storm moved southwest towards the Ionian sea, basically to the place of its original formation. It side-swept over Athens in the meantime, flooding the city, but that doesn't mean much since I could cry and Athens would still flood with my tears. Anyway. AFTER the storm left, the floods caused by it started multiplying and expanding. Picture that: a crystal clear sky, a bright sun and your phone screaming state alerts about evacuating your village or town because a lake has launched at you! Here's the thing: Thessaly is a massive plain surrounded by a ring of mountains. Half of those downpours fell right on the lowlands causing floods and destructions the first days. The other half however fell on the mountains, filled the streams heading down and they all met up and filled the lakes and the large river of Thessaly, Pineios and they all basically exploded the next days. Pineios especially exploded both in its western and eastern part, sinking the entirety of Thessaly's plains under water. As a result, floods were actively taking place days after the storm had ended and the weather was good. The phenomena have only started subduing since yesterday.
Tumblr media
The overflowing of the river, trapped by the mountains.
Farmers won't be able to work this year and next year is questionable as well. There are huge concerns about various epidemics breaking out as more and more dead animals are found in the waters. Entire villages are under the water. There are estimations that some villages in west Thessaly might have been lost forever and their residents will have to move elsewhere. Sixteen people have died from the rainstorm and the floods.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actual villages in Karditsa, Greece.
A more longterm danger is that the ground received such an unnatural amount of water that it might have been severely eroded and destablised, making it vulnerable to natural disasters I don't want to utter. Many roads are either broken or bloated and Thessaly has been cut out from communication and transportation with the rest of the country. To this day, there are maps guiding people how to drive from North to South Greece and vice versa by entirely skipping Central Greece! (Hint: they will have to drive through Epirus, aka western Greece.) The first days there was also complete isolation from what was happening in the country and the world and also the very regions we were in as we had no electricity and our only chance was getting a call from somebody being elsewhere and telling us what is going on.
Tumblr media
Volos, Greece (CNN)
Many regions have received within 2-4 days 55 times their monthly amount of rain or more than twice the yearly amount. Greek meteorologist Christos Zerefos estimated that such a phenomenon occurs every 300-400 years. Meteorologists were alarmed internationally - with Germans and Americans reportedly saying they hadn't studied such a phenomenon again in their career. Its intensity was record high in the history of Greece and right in the top of Europe's as well. They also agreed that such a phenomenon would be devastating even if it had hit the most advanced and prepared country.
BUT THIS IS NOT THE END. The weakened Daniel seemed to slowly move towards South Italy but it decided to take a turn and headed south towards Libya and Egypt. Quite possibly, as the storm was once again travelling across the warm Mediterranean Sea, it was rejuvenated and gained even more tropical traits. Eventually, the medicane hit Libya with unprecedented force.
Tumblr media
The cyclone travelling from Greece to Libya.
The toll it took on Libya is unspeakable. As I am writing this,
More than 5,226 people are killed and more than 10,000 are currently missing.
Like, can you wrap your head around what I am talking about? I don't see this shit being acknowledged enough across the world. I am checking this again and again, to ensure I am reading this correctly.
Daniel has officially become the deadliest medicane on record.
Tumblr media
Eastern Libya, from Al Jazeera.
In the meantime, Greeks found opportunities to practice their favourite sport: political infighting. People who weren't even here when hell broke loose say that if this or that was properly done, we would not have problems at all. I even saw an idiotic Greek expat comment how "we got drowned in a little bit of rain". The truth is we should bloody thank our lucky stars and I say this with the entire awareness of half of Thessaly being currently underwater. It is true that Greek governments and people have done so many things badly, like building on top of streams and rivers, changing rivers' natural route, drying up natural lakes and all that shit that guarantees you are going to have massive problems once a serious storm breaks out. Also, the disaster revealed that there was once more a very questionable management of all the money given by the EU for anti-flooding measures after a previous flood (Ianos). Of course, I would be happy if at last we viewed this disaster as an opportunity to improve ourselves and the management of our land, however whatever happened these days wasn't the fault of anyone in particular. On the contrary, A LOT worse could have happened. A lot. Maybe Libya is not an indication because if Greece is not used to such extreme rain phenomena, then Libya is probably ten times less used to them, however we should not forget that this monster was STUCK at least five days over the heartland of Greece. For this alone we should damn be thankful we did not get it any worse and that the land endured in any way and of course now we have to correct old mistakes as well but let's do it united and determined and without wasting time once more in pointless infighting, which in this case might even be unfair. (In fact I think the thing we should blame the state the most about was not making it clear beforehand that this was going to be unprecedented, not just "very severe". They probably didn't want to cause panic and mayhem but still. We should know.) Of course I am not talking about how the state will treat the afflicted regions from now on, which is entirely its responsibility. And we should stand next to Libya. Greece has its wounds to mend but it should absolutely provide support to Libya. We know what this freak phenomenon was like.
I know this text is long but please consider reblogging this. We should know what happens on our planet. Thousands of people are dead from a freak phenomenon devastating regions across lands and seas. Also forgive any mistakes I might have made although I believe the information is correct for the most part. I didn't speak more about Libya because I don't know enough to analyze the situation as much. Perhaps there are ways of supporting the country too. As a last note, this phenomenon was not freakish because of the climate change - it was just a very unusual occurence. However, the - otherwise normal - warmth of the sea did feed and intensify the storm and the climate change might in the future cause these super rare, accidental phenomena to become more frequent.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation with the stranded 30 Bulgarian citizens who are in Volos, Greece. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel.
Bulgaria is in constant contact with the Greek authorities, she noted:
"We are in constant contact with the consul general in Thessaloniki. The Bulgarians have what they need - whether it is food or medicine. We monitor the situation hourly. I have information about 30 Bulgarians in the Volos region. We are ready at the moment when there is an opportunity to reach them - it is within the powers of the Greek authorities, we are working closely with them - to reach a place from where they can be transported to Bulgaria or evacuated".
Bulgaria is ready to assist if transportation or evacuation of Bulgarian citizens affected by the floods in Greece is needed, Gabriel said.
"The Greek authorities have the opportunity to reach Bulgarians in distress as quickly as possible, but we as a country are ready to react", Mariya Gabriel added.
To a question about the readiness expressed by the European Commission for assistance, if a request for assistance is received from Bulgaria under the European Union mechanism for civil protection, in connection with the floods in Tsarevo, Gabriel stated: "We activate the European mechanism when we cannot cope on our own. For the moment the authorities, you see - the army, the fire brigade, the police, they are all mobilized. Of course, when it becomes clear very quickly that there is a need for necessary support, the good thing is that we will have it and it was clearly expressed by the European Commission".
This was said by Mariya Gabriel, who attended the opening of the third international forum "Brand Bulgaria - Touch the Miracles", which was held at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

War and Peace 130/198 -Leo Tolstoy
121
On August 29, Rostof and Ilyn set forth with the bivouac to search for fodder in the villages and Rostof thought of taking the provisions at Bogucharovo before the French could get them. Rostof had the notion it was the estate of Bolkonsky, he got a peasant who told him the villagers have collected for business. Alpatich tells Rostof what happened and Maria needs help, the villagers refused her help and want her to leave. Rostof found the affair romantic, (she’s in danger Fabio) he’ll escort her.
122
Rostof felt indignant at the peasant revolt and with no plan of action walked up to the mob. (who promptly beat his bougie ass) After the hussars and Rostof entered the village a division of opinion formed. Rostof calls for the elder and the villagers shouted they wouldn't think of rebelling, just following the council, Rostof calls them traitors and takes out Karp and Dronushka and orders the rest to go home. Rostof takes the two to the master's house and scolds them for their actions. The teams were readied, and Maria had Dronushka released, Rostof waited in the village to be sure her carriage passed and accompanied her along the highway a few miles. As he left her he said it was nothing, happy to make her acquaintance and hopes to meet again in better circumstances. Maria questioned if she loved him (girl you literally just met him how desperate are you) and Rostof thought she was agreeable and would be happy to return to her. (again you two just met) His comrades teased him about it and he lost his temper and also for the reason if he married her, who has enormous property that would benefit his family, what about Sonya. (you two are cousins who have been stringing each other along since grade school move on)
123
Kutuzof sent for Andrei to join him at Tsarevo-Zaimishehe, he met a lieutenant colonel Denisof. (I recognized his speech impediment) He recognized Natasha’s first suitor, and it brought back painful feelings he didn't allow himself to feel lately as a lot more took place and now it didn't affect him so much. (sure it doesn’t) They talked of the campaign plan to attack French communications when they heard cheering for the arriving Kutuzof and it took him a minute to recognize Andrei and gave his condolences. Denisof interrupted and told his plan to break through enemy lines between Viazmo and Smolensk, he knew the region, Kutuzof says they’ll take it over tomorrow.
124
Andrei told Kutuzof of recent events and Kutuzof says he summoned him to keep him here with him, Andrei says he’s no good at staff service and he’s used to the regiment, Kutuzof says he’s right. Kutuzof recounted the Turkish war and the concluded peace they abused him for it. “both for the war and for the peace; but all came about in time. All things come to those who wait.”p.443 With patience he took fortresses and made the Turks eat horses, the French will do the same if he has anything to do with it. If it demands it, accept the battle. “But trust me, my boy. There are no more powerful fighters than these two-tine and patience; they do everything. But our advisers-they want to see it in that light, that’s the trouble.”p.443  Andrei has confidence in him mostly because he is Russian and his feelings for his country, it’s why he has approval of their people in spite of court cabals.
125
After the Sovereign left Moscow life went on in the ordinary channels, hard to believe Russia was in peril, the only recall of patriotic enthusiasm was the demand for money, which now legally had to be met. Though the enemy was approaching Moscow, they didn’t regard it with any seriousness, two voices, one reasonable, preaching of peril, seeking to avoid it and the other declare it too painful and difficult to think about, better to shut the eyes to it until it arrives and for now only think of pleasantness. “When a man is alone, he generally gives himself up to the first voice, but in society, on the contrary, to the second.”p.445 (herd mentality everyone eles is ignoring the forest burning so no need to panic don’t listen to the screams until it’s too late) Rostopchin sent the French and all foreigners out of Moscow. Pierre was spending on his warriors but the joke was he was going to buckle on his uniform and no one would miss the sight.
Julie, along with many others in Moscow now only spoke Russian, she was being escorted out of the city. Pierre won't hear talk of his regiment, he’s sick of hearing about it. (I heard something similar before WWII the Jewish women knew it was going to get bad because they talked in their social circles and could read the writing on the wall but weren’t listened too) The gossip shifted to the Rostof’s poor condition, Count Rostof has no common sense and asking too much for his Moscow estate, they should economize and settle his debts. Julie asked Pierre if Natasha was healthy enough to travel and insinuates something of Natasha and Pierre demands to know but he denies he ever played the knight for her, he hasn't been to their house in a month and doesn't understand the cruelty. Julie changed the subject to Maria moving to Moscow and her father dying, Pierre asks how she is and she told him how Rostof saved her.
126
When Pierre got home he was handed two of Rostopchin’s bulletins, forbidding fleeing from Moscow, swearing the villain won't get in Moscow, now Pierre was convinced the French would invade. (yeah nothing more convincing that there’s actual dan ger than the government sending out notices that's there’s definitely no danger you guys we’re the government you can trust us by the way you’re not allowed to leave) The second was if the Viazma inhabitants wish to arm themselves there’s plenty of arsenal to buy at low prices. (ah they didn’t want people to leave so they’ll have an impromptu militia) Pierre tried to decide if he should join the military, (you won’t make it past basic training) Pierre’s cousin asked him why they’re staying in Moscow while everyone’s fleeing, he says it’s propitious, she exclaims the servants won't listen and the French will be there soon, let her go to Petersburg, she can't live under Napoleon. He’ll allow her to go but all the reports are wrong, there’s no danger, (a whole city was just burned down) she calls Rostopchin a hypocrite still Pierre didn't join the army.
The next evening the cousin left and he was told they money needed couldnt be raised unless he sold an estate and the expenses would be his ruin but he can't go back on a promise. Now it seemed to him a catastrophe was growing near, (now that it effects your money do you think there’s something wrong) all his acquaintances but the Rostofs were leaving and he didn't go near them. In September no one could tell who won the battle of Shevardino. Pierre made haste to reach the front of the Cossacks, further from Moscow, a feeling to do something, make a sacrifice. “He now felt the pleasant consciousness that all that constitutes the happiness of men-the comforts of life, wealth, even life itself-was rubbish, which it was a delight to renounce in favor of something else.”p.449 Pierre made no account of himself, so couldn't say for what the sacrifice was made but merely the act was joyful. (your life is that empty is it)
127
Two days later the Battle of Borodino, why was it fought neither side could say, for the French destruction of their entire army, for the Russians destruction of Moscow, Napoleon and Kutuzof accepted it. Napoleon knew the capture of Moscow would not be the end he’d seen in Smolensk but no response to his offer to negotiate. Pierre left Mozhaisk that day, behind him a train of cavalry and the wounded from the previous night. Pierre couldn't find a field of battle, but fields of clearings, troops, woods, villages, bivouac fires and couldn't distinguish Russian from enemy troops. (you could say they weren’t so different after all) He asked who is in Borodino, these are French troops on the other side of the river.
Boris Drubetskoy called out to Pierre and told him of wanting to be present at the battle, Boris told him the best to be were Count Benigsens and wants him to come to a party that night. Boris takes him to Andrei and sees Dolokhof, Boris says he’s a schemer, (we know) but brave. (anyway goodbye Boris) Kutuzof overhears Boris talking to Pierre, his words of the enemy, dressing in white to prepare for death and Kutuzof knows Pierre’s wife, he’s welcome to his quarters. Dolokhof told Pierre it was nice to meet him, is sorry for their previous misunderstandings, asking for pardon. Pierre didn't know how to respond, (a punch to the face seems appropriate) Dolokhof threw his arms around him and kissed him. (this book is so gay)
128
Andrei was in Kniazkovo, as sad as his life is, he felt excited for battle, like before at Austerlitz tomorrow was possibly death and he the grim reality of it. “The three chief sorrows of his life especially arrested his attention-his love for a woman, the death of his father, and the French invasion that was engulfing half of Russia.”p.454 How did that girl endow him, how did he love her and calls himself foolish. (that one of many things to call you) He had felt the idea of love would keep her faithful for the year, (her own mother warned you) a fable, but reality was disgusting. (reality is you told a fickle sixteen year old she could find someone else and you kept delaying your return from a year long trip) His father built him Lisiya Gori and Napoleon came and took it all, Maria says it was sent from above, who’s discipline since he will be gone. Suddenly it all became threatening, he jumped up and began walking, tripping over Pierre, his face was unfriendly, and Pierre noticed. Pierre stutters out he wanted to see a battle, Andrei asks about Moscow, his family, they had gone to their estate near Moscow.
129
Andrei had tea with his friend and some officers, Pierre understood some of the arrangements, all he can say of Kutuzof’s appointment is that he’s pleased with it and Barclay de Tolly is good for nothing but a skillful, commandeering contingencies and reading his enemy’s intentions. War is chess like, but Andrei says the opposing arms strength can't be predicted, it depends on them. “Success never has depended, and never will depend, either on position or an armament or on numbers, and least of all on position.”p.457 Austerlitz, they had no reason for being there (sounds like another war) and anxious to get away, so they ran and lost and tomorrow a hundred possibilities, but it will be different, it will be decided which side runs and they will be killed, it will be the Russians who win tomorrow. If he could he’d have no prisoners taken, the French have taken his home and insult him, they need to be punished, Pierre agrees.
Pierre now understood this war and battle, Andrei to allow no quarter be given, it makes it less cruel. Magnanimity sensibility, a high-born lady is offended to see a calf slaughtered but will still eat it, laws of warfare are nonsense. Let the zeal in the next war be like this one then the enemies would not come against Russia and they wouldn't have to fight without knowing why. “let it be war, and not sport. For otherwise war becomes a favorite pastime for idle and frivolous men. The military are the most honored of any class.”p.459 (I see no lies) All rulers wear military uniforms and those that kill the most get the greatest rewards. (well I know that’s true in the air force) Pierre doesn't follow Andrei to his lodgings knowing it is their last meeting, meanwhile Andrei couldn't sleep remembering Natasha, loving that spiritual power of her frankness, honesty, her soul, he loved what destroyed it, Dolokhof is still enjoying his life. (yeah that’s life sometimes the wicked never get their just desserts)
130
The day before the battle of Borodino, M. de Beausset arrived, Napoleon doesn't want prisoners, Beausset gives him the gift from the empress as Fabvier spoke of the devotion of the troops the engagement had been disastrous. Beausset says Paris regrets his obscene as he presents a portrait of Gerard. Napoleon has it sent out so his old Guard could see the King of Rome. After breakfast Napoleon dictated to his army victory depends on them, behave as they did in Austerlitz, Friendland, Vitebsk and Smolensk. The cheers in front of his son’s portrait were more eager than ever, he has the portrait taken away, his son is too young to see battle.

[ad_1] SOFIA: At least two people died on Tuesday as torrential rains hit Bulgaria´s Black Sea coast, causing flooding and forcing hundreds of holidaymakers to be evacuated, officials said. Incessant heavy rain and thunderstorms since late Monday have caused rivers to overflow, damaging bridges and cutting access to the whole region south of the southeastern coastal city of Burgas.“At least several people have sadly lost their lives,” Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov told journalists from the flood-hit coastal town of Tsarevo. “Those who have died are one man and one woman,” he said, adding a few others remained unaccounted for. Several hundred holidaymakers vacationing along the coast have been evacuated to safer locations. [ad_2]

87th Day (17th of July)  First we could bike down around 250 m. We almost got a bit chilly but it was marvelous biking through the Bulgarian forest, which reminded us a lot of a djungle. Afterwards we had the pleasure of climbing even a little bit higher up than our start point. Through the shadow of the forest it was actually quite enjoyable this time. After passing Gramatikovo we passed a side street where some police officers with a worried face were standing around a person lying on the ground. Mara was almost certain that the person was dead. About 5 km away we got into police control. The officer let us pass through without checking, whereas the cars had to stop. This assured Mara of her theory. We arrived in Tsarevo around noon. The city was touristy and enjoyable. We ate in a bistro - or tried to: Mel was ordering a chicken dish. The meat was still partially raw. We asked several times if they could cook it for a few more minutes. However, they only wanted to refund us the money. Not sure if it was a language barrier we let it be - was a pity for the wasted meat though.  Afterwards we went down to the beach. It even had a shower. Hence, we went for a swim. It was wonderful!  Refreshed and reloaded we continued cycling along the seafront. There was one beach after another. We had another stop at Coral Beach and saw plenty of tents set up. After assuring us that it was legal to set up the tent, we decided to camp one night at the beach. We met lovely people: a worker of the embassy of Spain, with whom Mel enjoyed speaking Spanish. Afterwards Jonas who is on a world tour with his family for 3 years in the caravan. We enjoyed the beach so much that we actually considered staying 2 nights. However at dinner suddenly we were surrounded by mosquitoes. They were super aggressive so we fled into the tent. After that it was clear that we will stay only one night. https://www.instagram.com/p/CgRr9K5IxNMmmbzQdwNJ4zk7ktkVcWReGerH140/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

An old landslide in Ahtopol, which has been a problem for years, after heavy rains threatens to tear away the coastal promenade, which is meters from people's houses.
In the old part of Ahtopol passes the coastal promenade of the town. A landslide occurred more than 3 years ago and the residents of the seaside town are threatened by the problem. They turned to BNT, as in recent years they have not received assistance from the local authority, as well as from the regional administration. They also reported to the Regional Ministry, but so far the landslide has not been secured. They say that with each passing day, their houses are getting closer to the sea. They are concerned that, especially during the summer tourist season, hundreds of people pass along the promenade.
"The problem is not from yesterday - this thing has been happening for years. We filed a report back in 2000 to the ministry and the municipality of Tsarevo, but after that there was no result. Nothing was done. A week ago we filed a report again, because as a result of the floods, the situation has become more complicated, there is a very big slope, it is dangerous, people with children pass by here in the summer. This is the coastal promenade after all. We are afraid that at some point there may be victims," said Ognyana Ilieva.
BNT: Why was nothing done during these years?
"On the contrary, we have called experts from 'Geoprotection' - Varna, who have come up with their decision. But I believe that this decision is not up-to-date as of today, and we will certainly call for another inspection, through which it will be established in what way solved these problems of the local people. You can see that the urban part is nearby, in some places we are no more than a meter away from the beach itself. So, for me, this is vitally important," explained Stanislav Dimitrov, Mayor of Ahtopol.
According to local people, the landslide will not be made safe soon because Ahtopol was not included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan after last week's devastating flood. They believe that the local administration will first assist the most affected areas and then the landslide will be secured.
The ban on drinking water from the tap on the territory of Tsarevo municipality continues to apply. The results of the latest tests came out last night and show that she is still unfit. This was announced by the director of the Regional Health Inspectorate - Burgas, Dr. Georgi Pazderov.
New samples are due to be taken today and the results will be ready on Tuesday or Wednesday. The recommendation not to enter the sea also remains in effect.
