Summary: Lan WangJi braced himself.
“Wei Ying.” he said.
“You are not dreaming. This is real. You have been rescued.”
“The kissing bit comes first!” said Wei Wuxian impatiently.
“But…I cannot kiss you if you think you are dreaming!"
“I don’t see the logic in that.” said Wei Wuxian. “I obviously want you to kiss me or I wouldn’t be dreaming about it!

I have no words. Probably because Author used them all, so well applied to such a charming and surprising story that there are none left for the rest of us. Welp.
In which wwx lives, but is caged and tortured by jgy for 9 years before nhs starts with his plan for vengeance. Lwj is roped in, and mxy, and a very confused and disoriented (but happy!) wwx as nhs sets the scene to tear down his brother's murderer. Written with Author's usual engaging flair, snappy dialogue and fearless detours into both angst and humor. This story is a fabulous fix it.
I just want to rave for a moment at the audacity and skill it takes to have these two such different scenes in the same story and yet never once jar either the pacing or the tone.
Excerpt 1: “You used to put needles in my mouth.” he said. He shook his head, looking down and shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
‘You broke my fingers, and when they healed you broke them again.”
“You should have been more cooperative, then.” said Xue Yang.
“Your choice. You can’t blame me for your poor choices.”
Excerpt 2: They reached the door of the Hand’s bedroom, and their little party stopped. Nie Huiasang nodded at the sentries and they acknowledged it impassively, as if their Sect Leader frequently came to visit the possessed arm of his dead brother with a retinue, a [goose] and a bound and gagged man in black.
canon-divergence, wei wuxian lives, prisoner wei wuxian, trope: thinking this is all a dream, first kiss, protective lan wangji, caretaking, banter, mo xuanyu lives, humor, fix it, dreamsharing, dreams vs. reality, references to past torture, hurt/comfort, first time, goose!nie mingjue, mastermind nie huaisang, dream cultivation, happy ending, nie huaisang/mo xuanyu, @moominmammamia

The thing I find most interesting with immortal fictional characters is when the narrative does not also establish that they have some kind of magically gifted memory because on the one hand you have the comedy potential of:
“This was a major defining traumatic life event that took 3 years for you. Personally, I’m having a fucking stressful Spring Break. Trust me, this is nothing compared to the 50 year siege of the lost empire.”
And on the other hand you get the pure existential horror of:
“I know that I have loved many people. Some of them I remember perfectly, some I have forgotten, and I dread the day when the ones I can recall inevitably fade like all the others. I am sometimes furious that time has ripped them from me and sometimes so very relieved that the pain has dimmed with the centuries.”
Anyway, probably this is just creators not considering it, but duality of character etc etc. I just think it’s neat…

Ultimately, I think one of the worst things Hopes does wrt its writing of Claude is take out all of the complexities and contradictions that had made him so interesting to begin with.
OG Claude lies and manipulates people and closes himself off while still searching for the truth and wanting people to come together and be open with each other, because of how his traumas meld together with his dreams. He says that he'll do whatever it takes to get what he wants and shows off opportunistic tendencies and then buckles at the first sight of innocents getting hurt, because no matter how much he wants what he wants he still prioritizes the lives of the people around him over anything else. He knows of people's capacity to hurt others for petty or illogical reasons - was raised with that knowledge beating its existence into him - and yet still dreams of a world where people of different lands and cultures can still be friends, because that is how tightly he holds onto his dreams. He's a kind person with the capacity for being a dick, and his contradictions add on so much to his character; they in large part are his character.
Hopes Claude? He lies and manipulates people and closes himself off... and that's it. He says he'll do whatever it takes to get what he wants... and he does. He knows of people's capacity to hurt others for petty or illogical reasons... and has no real dreams of stopping it (or dreams of anything in the future really, by his own admission) and he indulges in that very behavior himself, seemingly without any awareness. He is untrustworthy, and manipulative, and opportunist... and that's it. What you see is what you get. And if this were a character unto themselves, if we're kind and we ignore all of the other issues with Hopes!Claude's writing, that would be a fun enough villain to follow around.
But it's not; this is supposed to be Claude. This is a character who has so much of his foundations be built on the idea that what he presents on the surface isn't all that he seems. That he's more than a character who is just "tee hee I'm only pretending to be nice but I'm actually eeeeevil evil evil evil evil evil evil," but someone who both uses kindness as a means to an end and embodies it genuinely. Warm yet calculated, a good man with real flaws - THAT is who Claude is. Hopes Claude is who Claude is if you strip him of any complexity - He Is Only Pretending To Be Good, But Actually He Is Bad.
He's just... easier to swallow, in a sense. Claude is a good person who is willing and able to do bad things, but only up to a very specific, very clear point, all for a good dream he's held onto for years and plans extensively to make a reality in the future; Clyde is a shit person who's willing to do everything short of bombing specifically whatever land he himself is ruling, all for what essentially amounts to no concrete purpose. There's no need to think about Clyde as hard, since he just does what he does because he's doing it and that's enough.
It's why I'm glad I am Dev-Approved to just fuckin' ignore Hopes entirely as a horrific fever dream, because Hopes does not understand what made Claude so lovable at all

Reo's jerseys reading just "Reo" is such a Choice because I think he's the only one aside from Rin and Sae who goes by his first name. But at least in the brothers' case it makes sense to distinguish them since they have the same last name. Reo doesn't have that issue, but he did get into blue lock specifically to achieve something for himself that isn't tied to the Mikage empire, by his own merit. Between that and the fact that when he appears on screen in the various charts he's sometimes reffered to as "Mikage" and sometimes as "Reo", I like to think he chose to have his jerseys show just his first name as a bet with himself. You know, to show the world that on the field he's not The Prized Mikage Heir, but just himself. And his achievements are his own

hhhhhhhhhhhh saboace royalty au. ace was crown prince but can’t use magic which is necessary to become king, so he renounces his title and becomes infamous for his eccentric tendencies to play up the illusion that he’s truly not meant for the throne and that his younger sibling has full rights to the title of heir.
sabo is born to a family serving in the royal court, has been a genius magician since he was a child, and is the perfect example of a young man fully educated to serve at the king’s side. which is why he’s allowed himself to be tied down into a loveless political engagement with the king’s heir, putting the whims of his family before his own and resigning himself to become the future ruler’s consort/spouse to legitimize his role as an advisory right-hand man.
but then the heir grows rebellious and denounces the engagement with sabo in public and ace swoops in to save the day (and sabo’s reputation), demanding his father give sabo to him instead. he steals sabo away and challenges his sibling’s right to the throne, intent on earning back the title not for himself, but so he can make sabo (who is heavily qualified to rule) the king - and since they’ll be wed, no one will be able to undermine sabo’s position as he will technically be part of the monarchy that governs the kingdom.

A little Dragon's Dogma 2 WIP:
With Dragon's Dogma 2 launching this Friday, I too spent solid 9 hours in the prereleased character creator to get my Arisen and my Pawn characters ready ahead of time. And boy do I love how they turned out. Mind you there's no way to turn off the UI in the creator so I haven't been able to take proper pictures of them yet but I'm sure that will change once the game launches so stay tuned.
Starting off with my Arisen character, Alcestis Lysther:
Once an honorable oathbound knight serving her queen, now Alcestis is just as disgraced as her Lady as she first saved her life and then followed her into exile to continue being by her side. Her loyalty and adoration outweighs the nagging guilt of her and her Lady's past actions.
I really wanted to give her a kind of sharp and hawk-like aesthetic and I REALLY adore the way she turned out.
Continuing with my main pawn, Oriana Cirrus:
A queen who - threatened by an usurper - devoured a curse to gain an advantage over her enemies but it only brought destruction and chaos leading to her downfall and exile. Stripped from all her titles and riches, now only the curse eating it's way through her body remains.
Oriana has three scripture tattoos, two of which are mirrored on Alcestis' body. I like the idea that Alcestis offered to bind some of her own life power to Oriana to sustain her and to stop the spread of the curse (visually resulting in the identical tattoos), a fact that surely gives their dynamic a certain gravity. I'm not that familiar with the Dragon's Dogma lore (yet) but I'm sure Alcestis getting her heart stolen by a dragon will be an interesting twist on their relationship.
I for one cannot wait to find out more about the lore and maybe fine tune the backstories of these two.
