TONIGHT'S CLOSING THOUGHTS: Well, today there was another peaceful protest in Baton Rouge. Folks came together for Trayford Pellerin who was shot and killed in Lafayette, LA. I wore my shirt in remembrance of Victor White III, a 22-year-old young father who was killed in police custody in 2015 in New Iberia. I call it the #HoudiniSuicide because he supposedly shot himself in the stomach while in the back of a police car with his hands cuffed behind his back. Yeah... Houdini... I'm tired. I'm tired of crying. I'm tired of folks being offended when we say black lives matter too while they simultaneously pretend racism doesn't exist. Some are so blinded by pleas for black lives to matter that they can't even see that the same unruly police force that's killing blacks is also killing whites - its killing blacks in larger numbers but acts of racial violence are never isolated to a target group. When you give people a social license to ignore due process of law, it impacts everyone. So... I pray. I pray that the violent history of this nation that I read in books as a young person do not become a consistent part of our present. I pray that the hate that is being summoned by some in this nation does not experience a full rebirth. Her lawyers said they plan to sue over the death of Trayford Pellerin, who police said had a knife and was trying to enter a convenience store. The shooting Friday night was captured on video, and the state ACLU condemned what it described as a “horrific and deadly incident of police violence against a Black person.” Both the ACLU and the Southern Poverty Law Center quickly called for an investigation. Pellerin’s death prompted a crowd of protesters to gather Saturday and demonstrate against the latest fatal police shooting. Officers in riot gear fired what appeared to be tear gas on Saturday night after ordering the crowd to disperse Louisiana State Police said Lafayette officers followed Pellerin, 31, on foot as he left a convenience store where he had created a disturbance with a knife about 8 p.m. Friday. Stun guns failed to stop him, and the officers shot Pellerin as he tried to enter another convenience store, still with the knife, according to a news release. Pellerin became anxious in groups and may have been frightened by the officers, Michelle Pellerin told The Advocate. He had sought professional help earlier this year, she said. “Instead of giving him a helping hand they gave him bullets,” national civil rights attorney Ben Crump told the newspaper. He and Baton Rouge attorney Ronald Haley said they have begun their own investigation by interviewing witnesses. Some said Pellerin was not armed, Haley said. The family believes Pellerin may have been having a mental health crisis, Crump said.
