The Beef Stroganoff Song! (arbitrary subtitle discourse edition)
So, you may have noticed here that the subtitles in this clip (from Symphogear GX episode 3) are fairly different from what you're used to seeing when people post this video, and the phrasing in the subtitles is fairly different from what the associated memes often say
For those who don't know, Symphogear got itself released on blu-ray by Discotek, and with that came with a new translation authored by Noelle (@ulsairi on twitter ) who is notable for being the only trans lesbian anime translator I know of off the top of my head.
Her translation appears, in my opinion, really rather polished and very good, and I strongly appreciate the way it's written and how much character it adds to the dialogue by giving everyone distinct voices and adapting things into more natural English. It's also a fair bit gayer. I haven't encountered many people who've seen these subs, but I think most fans of the series would consider these a net positive change. There are some people who are mad about these subtitles, and they can die mad.
Anyway, let's talk about the different phrasing of the beef stroganoff song. I'm mostly going to compare to Crunchyroll's subtitles for reference since that seems to be what most others go off of. Here's a link to that version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So right off the bat we can see here that while CR's translation appears to be a lot more, for lack of a better word, functional, Noelle's translation tries to apply more dialectal force "it's beef stroganoff/Yes! It's THAT beef stroganoff!" And generally communicate through the tone how excited the girls are to get started. Additionally you'll see throughout that the latter is a fair bit more lyrical, there's a lot more punctuation and verbal tics and filler phrases written into the dialogue to express that they are singing, which makes sense since Japanese tends to omit a lot of the sorts of prepositions that Noelle threw in here,
Like, Yumi (yes I went and looked up her name on the wiki) just says "beef stroganoffu" because it's obvious from context that it is beef stroganoff, she doesn't need to spell it out, at least, not in Japanese
(We know like maybe ten hiragana and 1 kanji do not trust us on Japanese this is all just basic shit we learned from online guides)
So this probably leads to a rushed translator from Crunchyroll (they are notoriously crunched for time) who's just trying to Get It Done probably not really bothering to throw in extra additional connecting letters to express the tone of the character, only doing so when it's required to make basic grammatical sense in the target language. So they likely didn't think to make the subtitles have flourishes like this that aren't explicitly in the original Japanese. Noelle meanwhile had the time to consider things like this and take such liberties in order to attempt to convey the same tone that was arguably implied by the Japanese, even if not explicitly put forth
And that's about all the things I should not repeat I guess, TL;DR, these subtitles are more fun to read because the translator had more time to think about the best way to make them more fun while still being accurate to the spirit of the original dialogue, who'd have thought!
(In case you're wondering, the Commie subtitles say kind of the same thing here, and y'know, it doesn't seem like a wrong translation, but also I really dislike this subtitle styling, orange on pink with that font and that drop shadow is just kinda bad. I appreciate the effort but like. Come on. Please fansubbers, please think about if the font and colors you chose actually work with the image you're putting them on)
Tumblr media
Moving on!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
horizontal and middle rhyme with each other so you can almost actually sing this, actually let me take a moment to try it right now- never mind, I can't sing. Hahaha. I don't actually think it lines up that well with the melody But I thought it did! Didn't I? That's significant, that this actually reads like plausible lyrics to a silly song someone made up instead of a literal translation of a Japanese song
Anyway, here comes the first major difference!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So in the Crunchyroll subtitles, Yumi says "it doesn't have to be beef" which in English (in my estimation) sounds a tad scatterbrained, like, "oh yeah sure beef but whatever really it doesn't actually matter," while Noelle's subtitles rather say "Got no beef? Don't you worry!" Which implies something different.
"It is recommended to use beef, but you may substitute something else if you are sorely lacking in beef" as opposed to "Oh the beef doesn't actually matter, zoinks lol!" CR's translation is kind of a bit funnier in how it sorta comes from nowhere without this qualification, which probably lead to this phrase's memeticness, but Noelle's translation seems more reasonable to me so yeah again, tada, yay for sensicalness.
Now here's another interesting change:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, the flat manner in which the CR subtitles say "finish with salt" with rendezvous only being included because that's literally what they said, is sort of absent any stronger emotional implication,
Noelle's translation meanwhile going with "don't forget them, they need it" imparts personhood upon the salt and pepper. The implication being that the girls are saying, "the salt and pepper are in love, please reunite them, they must be in gay love together." Or maybe you think the salt and pepper cannot be forgotten and must be reunited because they are Only Friends.
Whether you choose to believe that this is the salt and pepper getting married, or merely subtext, or an interpretation, or salt and pepper shipping bait, this is a deeply important tonal indicator because it reminds you that these girls are ultimately playing with their food!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"And there, now you're in for a treat!" I don't think I need to explain this one.
Now, here's an interesting one!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Crunchyroll subtitles, it just says the memetic "boys don't know this." With no context, no elaboration, no clarity, no qualifiers. Boys don't know. Did the boys magically get their brains wiped? Are the boys biologically incapable? Who knows. Nothing is said but that.
Noelle's subtitles, on the other hand, qualify this statement by saying "Boys aren't taught to cook, so they may not know" (And note again how, it says "kno-ow" to emphasize, once more, that they're singing, and also this lines up with the long "ooooo" sound they make at the end of this lyric, so cool)
There is now context! Boys aren't taught to cook! Anime and Japan's culture in general still pigeonholes people into gender roles! And an anime translator just wrote you a hidden translation note about it! You might be a boy, you might know how to cook, but certain boys in another part of the world aren't traditionally taught cooking, so they may not know
They may not, but they could!
Trust a trans person to express gender facts with subtle nuances like this in anime translations.
And with that lovely bit of good translation and good writing and good localization of a thing to make it make sense to people
Mew!

Heads up! If you want to use any sort of translation of your own for korean, be it for today's event, to watch Acau's content or to learn the language, use Papago! Many korean speakers have said its better that Google Translate (to be fair, Translate is lacking in most non-eastern/indigenous languages, which is its own can of worms)
It should look like this on your app store:

I find it so interesting how many of the issues with the things MAME write comes from a western perspective and how it is interpreted in their context. Let me explain.
I think their biggest issue is not with the things she writes. Is with translation. I have thought about this before when I first got into BL and manga and anime and anything that comes from a different culture than mine. Most things I finded weird were actually explained and made sense in their designated context. One friend (and I also saw this) once said that when she watched anime back when she was younger there’s used to be subtitles with notes explaining some jokes the characters were saying or some food/name/anything that was from that culture that we would not be able to understand otherwise. And when I saw that I almost went crazy. Because I loved it. I loved having something on the screen that would explain things in that context. It made the whole thing more enjoyable and clear.
I feel like that’s what is missing nowadays with a lot of media coming to us in those contexts. Like, I also wished American and British shows had it but that’s an impossible discussion. Non-English media has to be contextualized much more than English. And sometimes, it is not even possible to try to equalize them. So many things in non anglo languages don’t have correlatives or similarities in anglo languages. They can only have meaning in that context. So, what happens when a popular author in that context gets into an English context? You guessed. It would be a mess. Because most translations are not legal and most translators also don’t even care about making a good translation of said work. Or they can’t because of external reasons.
This is not only about her work specifically. So many other shows come the wrong way to the international audience because of translation. And let’s be honest, most non english speakers also watch non english things with english-subtitles. So there are a lot of operations for a thing to come the exact way it was produced in the first place. And MAME is definitely one of them. Take the novel for example or the amount of issues with the subtitles in IQIYI. There were many things missing and things didn’t make sense, and others times the “actual” and original meaning was more powerful than the translated one.
I don’t think English speakers or people that consume English translations actually understand the amount of simplicity said language has. Is actually insane. So yeah, maybe some of the things she write is wrong and fucked up and also many others shows and books are like that (English ones are not that healthy and happy and good, yk). But I believe that until I can get into the original stuff, all of my critics are “empty”. And I think of it with what others say. Because I didn't see how it was in the context and probably neither them. Sometimes I need knowledge in how some of those things work. Like seriously, so many, and I say so fucking many things in BL shows, coming from Asia have a lot of puns and word games that only a native would understand. International fans would definitely need a comment or two in that sense.
Also, has anyone considered how the discourse in some of the usual topics are in Thailand? What do they think about it? Why only see the English interpretation and not others? People from other countries need to learn English to explain their non-English things. And try to make them understand why what the English ones thought was wrong, is not actually that bad in their country. This is seriously an issue.
Trying to push values and meanings to other cultures just because you have it is a problem. A historical one. So, this has no end. But we can still talk about it, right?

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded psychopath happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
#seeing some discourse and im not saying lucy grey didnt know#im saying she never dropped the kind of hints that she knew like she did in the movie#or if she did snow isnt worried about them until he very suddenly is consumed by them#snow is not concerned about whether or not she believed him. of course she did! hes snow!#but then shes gone…. for a while……#and its the sudden immediate drastic unravelling that comes across so clearly in the book#that i knew wouldn’t translate to screen yet still cant help but miss#the hunger games#coriolanus snow#tbosas#lucy gray baird#not a crime or anything just a note that i cannot stop thinking about#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#this is all from memory of reading it quite a while ago. so maybe 3 pages is an exaggeration#but i remember it happening VERY quickly and without much external cause#like we as the reader have no indication as to whether shes nearby or not.#snow has no idea either. he just SUSPECTS. and his suspicion breeds the hatred that has been bubbling inside him all this time#he hates how she undoes him. he hates that he WOULD run away with her if shed let him keep his secrets#and he HATES more than anything that she makes him WANT to tell his secrets#he wants to be vulnerable and reveal the ugly nasty parts about himself and still be loved#but he does not let himself and it is everyone’s downfall#he chooses cruelty bc it is easy and familiar and makes him feel more powerful than the vulnerable give and take that real love requires

"its insane quack made a statement in the discord
its point by point what ive been saying for 2 weeks mdrrr"
"basically:
- priority number 1: find a way to financially support everybody. [quackity] doesnt want volunteers because he understands that legally it is too risky, especially with the work laws in other countries that he does not know about.
- if the financial situation is good enough, we bring back the actors, but in the meantime theyre on hold. there are no updates because he doesnt want to make any false promises to them.
- theres little communication because of the legal pressure and due to the partial leaks which can be twisted.
- hes restructuring the entire studio and how it works, and it takes a lot of time. he also doesnt want to pressure too many people currently working to adapt so quickly to these changes. (im guessing its a major overhaul to how everything works[/working methods])"

you said you think gay sex cats is the new duchamp's fountain. i dont disagree and i kinda see what you mean already but please elaborate
it was a silly and tongue in cheek way to say that a lot of people are getting mad about it in a way that implies reactionary views on art, and that there's no way to say gay sex cats isn't art that wouldn't also imply that the fountain isn't art. a funny meme image is a funny meme image, but it is also funny to overthink and recontextualize them as art.
and the reaction makes the comparison even more apt. neural net generated artworks are anonymized mass produced images, vast majority having no artistic pretension or meaningful content such as a thomas kinkade painting. gay sex cats was made with no intent to be art, but the discourse it has with audience reaction and its appropriation in derivative works make it so. why is gay sex cats not art if people talking about it negatively allow it to be called art? is art only things you find beautiful and valuable? if so, what is value and beauty, and how do you draw the line? if gay sex cats was still ai generated but had more "aesthetic qualities" would it be art? if someone copies the original image by hand with all its ai generated faults where is the value generated? does the original still have no merit of its own, even after appropriation as a digital ready-made?
but the main reason as to why gay sex cats is comparable to the fountain still is because it made a lot of people with bad takes on art really really mad. and that the pissed off tags wouldn't look out of place as reaction to modern art in the 1920s. art is a flat circle
EDIT: well. putting an addendum because in retrospect more people took either or both the op and image in face value and much more self serious than ever intended. a lot of people understood the tone i was getting at, and i still stand by the questionings i added on, but still for clarification. the original comparison is not serious. it's self evidently ridiculous to compare a meme image to a historically significant artwork, the comparison was only drawn because they were both controversial to an audience, who reacted denying their status as respectively as an image and as art, and that it was funny that the negative reaction people had to the original image explicitly denied its status as art, even if the meme never had pretension to be art, so it was funny to draw a comparison and iterate on that.
i did think it was valid to bring in questionings about art and meaning because that's the reaction i saw most and wanted to make people think about the whys, and that also i do not think it's valid to base your dislike on ai art on either grounds of questioning its position and value as artwork, or even as a question of ip theft. regular degular handmade art can be soulless, repetitive, thoughtless, derivative, unethical, open and blatant theft, and much more, and that does not make it any less of an artwork. neural nets are tools that generate images by statistic correlation through human input.
the unambiguous issue with neural nets in art is its use as a tool by capital, to threaten already underpaid and overworked working artists and to keep their labor hostage under threat of total automation. in hindsight i regretted not adding the paragraph above as it was a way in which people could either misinterpret or assume things about me, but hindsight is hindsight and there's no way to predict how posts would blow up. so shrugs. i had written more posts in my blog that elaborated on that because asks would bot stop coming. and i think my takeaway is that people will reblog anything with a funny image without reading the words around it, or even closely looking at the image.

I know I talk about mdzs modern AUs a lot, but it's just somehow become a fascinating adaptation process to me, all these people making their personal calls about the nature of reality.
And a thing I keep coming back to is all the people who deliberately decide to give modern!wwx Mo Xuanyu's build.
To preserve the strength contrast that's leveraged for horny, which like, yeah that's fair, horny is an acceptable reason to make a story choice. I respect that, sometimes grudgingly.
But as a result of noticing this being done, oftentimes it seems without any reflection about why, I've developed this minor obsession with the fact that wwx in his own body at its adult height was fractionally shorter than lwj.
And this was the height he reached after a multi-year period in childhood living on scrounged garbage, plus the three months starving in the mass grave toward the end of his growth period.
Meaning that by all normal logic, a modern AU wwx who did not experience these periods of intense privation--which is most of them; it's quite rare for children to experience that particular form of total neglect in modern developed nations and modernAU!wwx's life ruining circumstances only occasionally involve intense physical torment--is going to be significantly taller as an adult.
Like. Add a few inches on there.
Where are all my adequately nourished six-foot-four Wei Wuxians???

"Messages of support are nice but there is no support needed. I'm just not having fun, the event is really not made for me, I can't force myself to play when all I've got the past 3 days is repeated negativity and barely got any funny moment with anyone on the server when normally I spend my time laughing on it lmao.
So there's nothing, let me think/come up with a way to have fun and I will stream QSMP again once I find it again, but streaming this for now just makes me SUPER sad so it's useless !
No complaint on my part I'm just in [he never finished that sentence lol], understand that you're watching content on the Internet for entertainment purposes and to be happy, not to watch someone tilt 24/7 !!!!!! :D
(Tubbo and BBH played really well, the event is encouraging playing like this to have better stuff so sending them hate is completely idiotic)"

i love neuvifuri’s dynamic and relationship. like. imo they are the epitome of “we are inseparable, we are in love in every way, we are soulmates not by birth or due to fate binding us inexplicably but because we spent those 500 years being the one constant in each others lives and weve come to know each other the best, but we are simultaneously strangers. we never truly knew each other during all that time.“
and neuvillette knew for so long furina was keeping a secret from him and it pained him to force that secret into the light, but he knew he had to in order to save fontaine, and despite that he still wanted to do it as gently as possible. to make the trial the last resort if the travelers conversation didnt work. after the final events of the archon quest, he let furina go wherever she wished, he (if im remembering correctly) gave her a nice house and enough funds to do as she pleased and live comfortably. he used his new authority over hydro to give her a vision made specifically for her, the very first vision he has given out. he has made it as clear as day that she is welcome to talk to him, to ask to have tea, to ask him for whatever or simply just to talk.
neuvillette using those actions to say “i hope you let me know who you truly are, and allow me to stay in your life for as long as you wish, but i love you so i will not force you.”

I found this tweet pretty helpful about Pierre's insights?(not sure that's the right word..)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Translation:
So what we can remember from Pierre's intervention tonight on the subject:
He stayed in contact with Pomme (who wants to continue QSMP) & Léa (who doesn't want to come back), especially to reassure them. He's doing a big pressing(?) for Pomme's return.
He's conscious that the changes are gonna take time (weeks or even months) he leaves(?) this time for Quackity to make changes. If nothing changes, he'll leave and do other projects.
He suggested solutions to help finance the project to Quackity, like sponsoring (like a village on the map with the sponsors), to release merch (but it takes a while to be made) or that the QSMP streamers finanacially participate to help pay the admins.
Aypierre is conscious that he isn't a multigaming streamer (his viewership isn't as good on games that aren't minecraft), to go without QSMP, a server he really likes is also a risk for him to lose sponsorship that he can't afford.
He then criticized the big french twitter accounts that only come to add twitter drama on the fact he returned to the server when they don't even care about QSMP usually.
He understands the viewers/ccs that don't want to come back yet.

sometimes i see things like 'oh i love people with ocd/intrusive thoughts i know you aren't really violent/a sexual predator/bigoted/etc you aren't your thoughts <3' but it's like.
do you still love us if we engage with the thoughts (in safe, consensual spaces) as a way to take power away from them? through things like kink and fiction and art?
or do you only love us and know we 'aren't our thoughts' so long as we continue to suffer because of them? are we only pure and precious little victims of our minds so long as we don't look into the abyss and let it look back?
i know maybe it's unfair to question people just trying to spread positivity but i've seen so many of these same types turn around and call me evil for daring to just relax around those thoughts and get some kind of enjoyment out of the genuinely horrendous things i have to deal with every waking fucking moment instead of crying in a corner fearing being the monster
because it really does seem like people are intent on enforcing the idea that if we didn't hate ourselves for our thoughts it WOULD make us bad people, i know for many it probably isn't their intent but the implication is there regardless. things like saying 'you're not a monster because look, you're scared of being a monster!!!' really just says 'if you stop suffering for even a second you will become a monster' to us.

"Personally, as I have been a victim of 3 swattings in the past including one where 7 PSIG agents¹ came to my house with famas², I understand more than anyone else Quackity's want to step back from everything after the doxxing. Even more so when he's in the US and he's hispanic. And you all forget during this that he's only 22 years old. It's crazy that in 2024, despite the known past issues with doxxing, people are still not careful. I've seen comments like "yeah but he should have a security team blah blah" or "well he's a CC he's a public person" and you are completely sick [if you say that] you no longer seperate reality from online.
In short, I think it's time everyone calm down. If you still like QSMP, share that love with those who also continue to like/play on QSMP and ignore everything else.
And for those who don't like it anymore, turn the page, go get fresh air, go save kittens, I don't know, something that brings you joy.
For context don't hesitate to watch Quackitys stream [he links the vod]
And may I add, nothing justifys or excuses doxxing, and this is true for everybody, not just for the doxxing of CCs."

we just had the most interesting discussion about war and masculinity in the old wap server and you gotta hear this.
If you wanna talk about nikolai rostov you will always, ALWAYS get to the topic of manliness. Because genuinely masculinity is such a core part of his character. There is no nikolai without masculinity, and that masculinity is as performative as it gets.
We like to joke about his tsar crush and okay yeah he definitely does have a gayass crush on the tsar. But he himself connects it to being part of a group, a group with a common interest. Everyone in the army loves the tsar.
Being part of a group is why he joined the military in the first place! He wants glory, he wants to prove himself, to be strong, and to be a part of this big group of manly men. And he needs to be a part of a group, because nikolai is a follower in every single way. He's not a leader at all. And the moment he becomes a hussar, he fixates on Denisov. Denisov is brash, headstrong, hairy, and so intelligent. He knows what he wants, he stands up for himself, but he also cares deeply for his men. He's a really great leader, but to Nikolai he's also the perfect manly man.
Weirdly enough, hair is such an important part of Nikolai's relationship to manhood. Denisov is consistently described as hairy. At the start of the novel, Nikolai has some very sparse beginnings of a mustache on his lip. A shitty teenage boy mustache, truly. Over the years it gets thicker as he gets better at performing his masculinity, and soon enough he's just like Denisov. He's the man he always dreamed of being (except a little worse because Denisov is a much nicer person than him).
Dolokhov's hands are also described as hairy. Sure, it's gay as shit, but Nikolai, in distress, fixates so much on the hair on Dolokhov's hands. He says himself that those hands hold him in their power.
And the gambling, too. Cards and gambling are very much a man's thing. No girls allowed. Nikolai is so terrible at cards, and he plays against a known cardsharp. You might think this is an idiotic move, and it is. But he is indeed kind of stupid, so he does it anyway. And why does he keep going? Well, one, gambler's fallacy. Two, he convinces himself it'll all be okay in the end. Gambling is a Man Thing, men gamble all the time and they turn out okay! It's okay! It always turns out okay, except for when it doesn't, but surely he's enough of a man to know how to gamble. But then Dolokhov is more masculine than Nikolai, and his hairy hands hold him in their power, and they ruin him.
So, Nikolai succeeds in his performance as a manly man. He becomes what society expects him to be, even if it's not his true self. And then he marries Marya, a woman, because what else would he do? Men like women, and men marry women. Men don't like men. Remember all of this definitely has to do with how he's at least a little bit aware that he's gay.
And what kind of husband and father does Nikolai become? A neglectful, dismissive, rude one. He's a masculine man, he doesn't have time for his family! Of course he has to have a family, because he has to pass on his genes and create a new generation of Big Strong Sons, but he shouldn't actually care about his wife or children. And he becomes a farmer, too, which is just THE most masculine thing he could do.
So do we ever actually get to see Nikolai being his honest-to-god true self? Does he ever drop the manly man act and just enjoy life? Well, no, it's never truly gone, but I think he's most comfortable with Natasha. I mean, Natasha is his best friend, really. She's his favorite person in the world, and he can be honest with her. They're very similar people, and thus she understands him and he understands her. Just read the Christmas part of the book please. It's so amazing.
In conclusion, in the immortal words of jimmy rostova, "he's trying so hard to transition to hussar gender"
