i'm sure i am not the only one who is very concerned about the ~4 hours between when the midjourney change was made, and I knew to go opt out of it, so; glaze does not need to be on all your works to be effective. in the same way that one artist glazing all their works will ruin a broad, multi-artist dataset, glazing your works moving forward will ruin any dataset trained on you. if out of 100 comics I've posted, 10 are glazed, a dataset trained on all of my comics will not be able to make anything similar to my style. anyways. go download glaze.

#ofc a manual review of the data set could pick out anything glazed. ig the point for me is to force that manual review #though wider adoption of glaze is not a perfect or even workable solution for many. my computer is 10 years old and runs glaze but #thats pretty lucky on my part. and the '100 comics' thing isnt perfect bc. im not using glaze on my comics. it looks really bad.#and there's not a real risk of someone using my art to train a data set bc. like. cartoons exist.#like you probably SHOULD glaze everything especially from now on #but if like me the idea of trawling your entire internet presence seems so daunting youd almost sooner delete it all #posting Some poison is better than posting No poison #but most important is not being paralyzed into inaction by how daunting the task is. even if that does mean no poison #im trying out what works and what does not right now for me. and i guess my advice is that you do too even if that means making a pillowfor #lol

Interestingly enough I think calling language learning models a.i. is doing too much to humanize them. Because of how scifi literature has built up a.i. as living beings with actual working thought processes deserving of the classification of person (bicentennial man etc) a lot of people want to view a.i. as entities. And corporations pushing a.i. can take advtange of your soft feelings toward it like that. But LLMs are nowhere close to that, and tbh I don't even feel the way they learn approaches it. Word order guessing machines can logic the way to a regular sounding sentence but thats not anything approaching having a conversation with a person. Remembering what you said is just storing the information you are typing into it, its not any kind of indication of existance. And yet, so many people online are acting like when my grandma was convinced siri was actually a lady living in her phone. I think we need to start calling Language Learning Models "LLMs" and not giving the corps pushing them more of an in with the general public. Its marketting spin, stop falling for it.

I have to wonder how many people celebrating AI translation also complain about "broken English" and how obvious it is something was Google translated from another language without a fluent English speaker involved to properly clean up the translation/grammar.

Because I bet it's a lot.

I know why execs are all for it—AI is the new buzzword and it lets them cut jobs thus "save" money and not have to worry about pesky labour laws when one employs humans—but everyone else?

There was some outcry when Crunchyroll fired many of their translators in favour of AI translation (with some people to "clean up the AI's work") but I can't help but think that was in part because it was Japanese-to-English and personally affected them. Same when Duolingo fired many of their translators in favour of LLM translation. Meanwhile companies are firing staff when it's English to another language and there's this idea that that's fine or not as big a deal because English is "easy" to translate and/or because people don't think of how it will impact people in non-English countries.

Also it doesn't affect native English speakers so it doesn't get much headway in the news cycle or online anyway because so much of the dominant media is from English-speaking countries and English-speakers dominate social media.

But different languages have different grammar structures that LLMs don't do, and I grew up on "jokes" about people speaking in "broken English" and mocking people who use the wrong word when it was clearly a literal translation but the meaning was obvious long before LLMs were a thing, too. In fact, the specific way a character spoke broken English has been a way to denote their native tongue for decades, usually in a racist way.

Then Google translate came out and "Google-translated English" became an insult for people and criticism of companies because it was clearly wonky to native speakers. Even now, LLMs—which are heavily trained on English compared to other languages—don't have a natural output so native English speakers can clock LLM-generated text if it's longer than a sentence or two.

But, for whatever reason, it's not seen as a problem when it goes the other way because fuck non-English readers or people who want to read in their native tongue I guess.

#and it's not like no people were doing translations so wonky translations were better than nothing #it's actual translators being fired for a subpar replacement #and anyone who keeps their job suddenly being responsible for cleaning up llm output rather than what they trained in #(which can take just as much time or longer than doing the translation by hand from scratch)#(if you want it done right anyway)#hell to this day i hear people complain about written translations of indigenous words and how they 'aren't english enough'#even though they're using the ipa and use a system white english people came up with in the first place #and you can easily look up the proper pronunciation and hear it spoken #but there's such a double-standard where it's expected that other languages cater to english/english speakers #but that grace and accommodation doesn't go the other way #and it's the failing of non-english speakers when an english translation is broken #you see it whenever monolingual english speakers travel to other countries and utterly refuse to learn the language #but if someone doesn't speak in unaccented (to them) english fluently in their home country the person 'isn't trying hard enough'#this is just the new version of that where non-english speakers are supposed to do more work and put up with subpar translations #even as a native english speaker/writer i get a (much) lesser version of this because i write with canadian spelling #and some people get pissed if their internet experience is disrupted by 'ou' instead of 'o' or '-re' instead of '-er'#because dialects and regional phrasing/spelling is a thing #human translators can (or should) be able to account for it but llms are not smart enough to do so #and that's not even getting into slang and how llms don't account for it #or how llms can put slurs into translations because it doesn't do nuance or context and doesn't know the language #if you ever complained about buying something from another country that came with machine-translated instructions #you should be pissed at companies cutting english-to-[language] staff in favour of glorified google translate #because the companies are effectively saying they're fine with non-native speakers getting a wonky/broken version

It is kinda hard to explain 🤧 and drawing it's my hobby And I'm definitely still learning! but some things that help me when drawing anatomy is tracing screenshots from the source to break it down to it's basic shapes! Doing that a lot of times just kinda get's ingrained in your brain after a while and you also kinda can stylize it as you wish. And, talking about Miguel O'Hara in specific here, staring at his muscles for a while actually also helped LMAO

#i usually use pose references when drawings (be random pics from the internet or photos of myself but i kinda just went ham there)!#theres also a lot of resources nowadays for artists that are easily accessible! if you look into pdfs of anatomy for artists you will find #a lot of books!!!!#ehhh ALSO sketching loose poses from models or random people can help?#when i was younger i loved sketching ballerinas performances and just dancers in general! their poses are very fluid and usually the #costumes they wear accentuates their anatomy when they move so that too?#im also a taekwondo black belt so when younger i usually just sketched random fighting poses from my training lmao #im rambling at this point but i hope this all helps a little bit!!! remember to practice and have fun! :']#ask

AI with ethically sourced data and low environmental impact designed to help streamline or add to your artistic process without replacing it? yippee!!!!!

(examples: AI vocal synths that rely on paid voice work from a voice provider who was hired specifically for the project, specialized digital brushes that dynamically replicate real-life mediums like watercolor or gouache, etc...)

AI that depends on continuous rampant theft to function? made with the intent of replacing artists or eliminating the need for any amount of technical skill?? AND has widespread environmental impact??? i am legitimately beating you to death with hammers.

(examples: legitimately every single image generation AI i've seen die die die)

#just to clear that up #which also reminds me #i keep thinking about adding a global “do not use AI image generators in conjunction with my VBs” rule to wonderful-lychgate #and should also include a “do not train any models based on these VBs” to be safe #ouggh #it already says enough that they all have a “do not use in conjunction with NFTs or anything blockchain”#the internet just keeps becoming more and more of a hell for artists huh

re: this post, discord isn't a social media, but fuckers keep treating it like one by migrating all of their communities and posts to discord in the wake of each social media fuckup, so it kind of is one by usage at this point?

Like. Nine times out of ten, if you're looking for information on something, whatever you're looking for is locked in some fucking discord server.

If you want help with a game or a mod? "Oh, come join the discord!" You want some support or have questions about a medical condition? "Hey there's a discord for that!" You want to talk to somebody about a hobby? "There's a great discord community!"

All of these things used to be on forums that were accessible without siloing yourself into an instant messaging box full of people all talking at once, to search for the one nugget of information you actually need in the moment. It would be like if you wanted to get eggs at the grocery store, but to get that one thing, you had to naturalize as a citizen of a foreign country first.

And don't get me wrong; I have a discord account, and I use it to talk with friends. But I would rather eat my own shoes than join a "community" just to get some answers to a question that used to be posted visibly on reddit, tumblr, or fuck forbid, a topic-specific forum.

(To top it off, this doesn't even touch on my thoughts that discord, being a social tech company in 2023, is going to implode like all the other social tech companies because of increased monetization pressure. It's just a matter of time before they make dumb decisions like reddit, or get bought out like skype.)

Fucking moving their communities off of accessible internet and onto discord #Which bites people in the ass right now #And will bite those communities in the ass in the future #To finish off too: if you think tumblr moderation is bad. At least tumblr mods are employees #Discord mods often aren't. So just keep that thought in your back pocket when you join some large server #Because the harassment and bad actors of social media exist elsewhere too #And it's one thing to wade through that when you're being paid. I have very nuanced and complex thoughts about Taylor Swift that I may not even be able to fully express properly here so bare with me (I just woke up)

This is also me just briefly touching on the topic without adding every possible thought and detail or else we'll be here all day so spare me a bit of good faith

Like if we're talking baseline why do I like her, idk I like her music, I think the work she's putting into about owning her own work is very cool and touches on bigger issues on the music industry, I grew up with the music, she's a phenomenal performer, I think she's very talented in a lot of fields, the way she just keeps breaking records and producing top hit after top hit is insane, she's seems like a generally nice and decent person on a personal level, tons of that stuff which isn't gonna be much different from why you like any other artist, etc etc

That being said I also think the place she stands in as like the face of white liberal women and white feminism is a very interesting one as she very perfectly balances on this little middle ground that both serves to benefit and condemn her; where she is forever going to being criticized (with varying levels of validity) for being too political on one side and not political enough from the other, etc. I think people who are expecting Taylor Swift to stand up and discuss leftist policy are chasing a bit of a pipe dream, because Taylor Swift isn't that and if she was she would not be able to exist as this billionaire, pop empire that she is today (and her and her team are most definitely extremely aware of that). She's not a bigot or anything but expecting her to bring about the revolution and be anything but a another massive pop star feels a bit silly at this stage.

I also think there's something to be said about how the intensity of a fan space can effect and contribute to this in a particular way but I'm not getting into that today.

TL:DR: I listen to her music, I really like a lot of it, I even have fucking Eras Tour tickets booked, she's seems like a decent enough human being but I have other people I'm gonna look to for my politics (including my own critical thought)
