#touhou fanon years

2015 comes in on the touhou community to drop the bombshells that are Urban Legend in Limbo and Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom. No miss no bomb score chasers and lunatic players had no idea what they were getting into and the fanon takes a massive hit. No one was ready for this.
This post bleeds quite a bit into 2016 as well. A lot of fanworks started adjusting interpretations and I was simply lost in the sauce. So anyway, here's my findings:
A new ship sails with Mokou and Sumireko due to their interactions in ULiL. Kaguya ain't happy about it.
I've noticed Raiko (and by extension, the Tsukumo sisters) be commonly depicted with tattoos. I don't know if this is a reference to something or if it's just inspired by metal/rock bands.
Wakasagihime gets some of the saddest works I've seen centered around one character in a while. She goes from being a part of a comedic trio to a lot of social trauma.
Sekibanki gotta be one of the funniest touhou characters of all time.
Seiran totally never killed someone! It's just paste! Don't worry about it!
Ringo collapses the instant she stops eating dango.
At this time Junko was not harassing Reisen at all! In fact, in most works I saw they actually somewhat got a long. Enjoy it while it lasts Reisen.
Junko commonly mistakes Seiga and Kaguya as Chang'e.
What if you place other sphere-like objects on Hecatia's head? A lot of works run with this joke.
For obvious reasons, Clownpiece tends to use a lot of english words or speak entirely in katakana
We are at peak psycho Koishi hours. Koishi getting a knife was all that was needed for this fanon interpretation to take over a while. Koishi's Heart Throbbing Adventure is no longer the main inspiration.
Sagume tends to have a very close relationship with Doremy since in many fanworks, her ability doesn't work in the Dream World so Doremy is a character she can freely talk to.
Tsukumo sisters have fallen under the Aki sisters routine of butting into a situation just so they can be involved.
The Tsukumos also seem to have their dynamic flipped for some reason. Benben would be crazy and Yatsuhashi would be cool-headed. Weird.
Kosozu is now an incident magnet and sometimes enjoys it.
Momiji's sword seems to keep getting smaller every year, I remember when she always had a buster sword.
Tojiko has been suppressing her anger as a vengeful spirit, but this also means if she does get mad, all of that anger comes out at once as lightning. The entire UFO and TD crew have to balance antagonizing each other, but not pissing off Tojiko.
Seija now has a mom. (It's Sagume).
Junko is very nice to the fairies
Tewi gets presented as a badass a lot around this time. Maybe she doesn't want Seiran to show her up.
Sumireko knows who Maribel and Renko are (this is not the case in canon...I think.)
Lots of Watatsuki sisters content here, although they're mostly used for catching up with the Eientei gang.
Lunarians can't resist filthy Earth food. It's just too good....well....at least until Sagume accidentally says it out loud.
Kokoro just wants to fight people, she'll use any justification. It's practically how she talks to others.
Hecatia becomes the weird t-shirt girl thanks to Sanae's dialogue in LoLK. She'll never live this down.
As usual, for a lot of the established touhou cast, their fanon portrayals don't change too much. However, the status quo was greatly shifted by the Lunarians. Eientei becomes more of a plot point in many doujins now and that is much different to how it has been for a while.
Bit of a side note, but I really like how a lot of doujins gave Junko a wide-eyed, but empty stare at all times. Really reinforces how broken of a mental state she must be in despite keeping up a casual conversation with most characters.
I feel this is around the time when there was a bit of a resurgance in touhou fans. Not that it was dying out, but much of the fan content did not focus on newer characters nearly as much as this year was.

Honestly though, what are Touhou fanartists/fanfic writers/doujin circles/cover bands/etc. going to do now that Flandre Scarlet's shown not to be some isolated child not quite in touch with reality who doesn't quite understand her own power and is actually just like a melodramatic battle junkie who tries to solve everything with violence?
I'm not saying she can't keep the creepy aesthetic or that she might not like it, but she's pretty obviously not like out-of-touch 'onee-chan!' 'why does everything break i just want to play' violent child.

It’s a big deal to me that after over a thousand years of thinking that she should not and preferably would not be alive, in the present era, Mokou seems to be the one character who – while not really “getting over” all of that – is most consistently shown making new connections and friends almost every time she appears.
Keine is a gimme, of course. ULiL shows Mokou making friends with Sumireko, AoCF with Mamizou – both of which are actually pretty out of nowhere, but it’s apparently just a thing for her. For the sake of this argument, WaHH looks like she’s on better terms with Reimu than probably 90% of the cast, and CDS implies the same for Marisa. And though a lot of fans had long since decided so, CDS seems to confirm the big one: that she and Kaguya are also on “friends who get together to hang out” terms, despite all the fighting.
Obviously Mokou is my favorite, but (at least allowing for a bit of fanon, since the series does very little “explicit” drama or character development) Touhou actually involves a fair few characters who had already given up on themselves finding new people who gradually work to prove them wrong. And that just happens to be a thing I like.

I feel like popular Touhou fanon is split between the Old Bad and the New Bad.
The Old Bad: flanderizing everyone to be lolrandom silly with character traits they don't even have, ignoring PC98 aside from Mima and maybe Shinki if you're lucky, ignoring the print works and post-MoF stuff almost entirely to uphold the first handful of Windows games only, upholding Gensokyo as a paradise and taking the games' chill vibes at face value without wanting to look deeper, yuri as a purely obligatory function of a percieved lack of guys with no real love, kind of a weird blend of performative worship for and actual dismissal of ZUN's vision, in general a gross sheen of 4channer detatched irony to play off any sincere positivity.
The New Bad: flanderizing everyone to be edgy and toxic with character traits they don't even have, ignoring PC98 completely, largely downplaying the games to uphold the print works only, upholding Gensokyo as a grimdark horrorfest stuffed full of cannibalism and refusing to accept any validity to the games' chill vibes, lots of Hashtag Toxic Yuri full of mind control and manipulation with no real love, kind of a weird blend of performative respect for and actual approppriation of ZUN's vision, in general a gross sheen of condescension and rigidity and rejection of fun or "what if"s that aren't needlessly edgy... and still an undercurrent of detatched irony as well somehow.
I get the impression that the second is probably a response to the first, but it strikes me as just as misaimed. Maybe I just haven't been into Touhou enough the past few years to get a feel for where it's currently at or something, but what I remember from when it was my hyperfixation, from taking in every piece of media, game or print, that was available (and translated) at the time, that there's some middle balance between tonal extremes that ZUN is actually shooting for, but neither of the main Fanon interpretations wants to aknowledge for some reason. Everyone forgets that most of the time Reimu is whimsical.

the thing is that this is like. it's bewildering to me to imagine a time before that connection existed as an obvious fact in the general fanon given that magical astronomy (which is pretty blatant about it) was released in 2006. it predates touhou even having lore!!!! and then pmiss which came out later that year and invented touhou lore and had the proof of merry time travelling in it. like are we really talking Seventeen Years Ago for the old times
actually that said i went and checked more dates. it's possible that it would have only become clear around the time of ssib and cilr but that's still only like. 2008. like what was going on out there
Tumblr media
that latter theory is funny just bc the first thing i ever wrote for touhou was a short story about how reimu (and all the hakurei maidens) are just versions of renko stolen from parallel universes

for the character ask prompt! what about Keiki?
General opinion/How much I care about them: She's a very solid character and surely part of the reason why WBaWC feels like one of the most-liked recent games! When the full version came out a lot of my friends and mutuals who were past touhou fans but had lost their interest came back thanks to that game specifically, so in my brain she's linked to that moment of shared happiness. I like how she's very much a classic god in terms of personality while being easier to reach than the others thanks to her role to the human spirits. I feel like she'd be easy to talk with, as long as you don't forget she's still a god of course, and I really like characters who act as a bridge of sort between others. She's also definitely unhinged under all that and it's fun to imagine situations where the politeness just goes out of the window.
A ship I love: (puts on my clown makeup again) My favorite Keiki ship is with Okina..... It's pretty high up there in my fav touhou pairings overall too lol. They're both loners and I tend to really enjoy romantic pairings where two people get to feel a bit less lonely together. I just think they'd get along really well! and I like their shared connection to art in general. The two of them crafting something special together is a nice image... It's also funny to imagine Keiki playing along Okina's boasting about her status and her powers as a secret god etc when Keiki is a god herself. She's Keiki's poor little meow meow!!! Oh and I also quite like Keiki/Mayumi too. I wish the fanon interpretation of them as parent/child would die down already... it's a bit sad that they didn't take off on the english speaking side as well as they did in the jp community even though literally everyone asks for more knight/princess wlw ships. It's Right There
A non-romantic relationship that I love: Gotta admit I haven't thought about her sphere of relationships much beyond the ones that also work as romances, but I love the implication that she's Eika's younger sibling if you follow the mythos. Keiki would probably be quite protective of Eika despite being the little sister... And with the recent addition of Hisami I'm really excited to see more fanworks with the characters based on the Nihonshoki/Kojiki (this better not monkeypaw on me). They need to have tea and chat about the old times!!!
The NOTP: It's Yachie/Keiki, sorry guys but I'm a yachisaki believer.....
My biggest headcanon about them: I'm pretty sure I've already mentioned that one in the past but the beast-shaped aura in her portrait looks like a familiar to me! Maybe some kind of fire spirit to help her crafting :)
An idea for a fanwork I would like to make/see about them: I'd like to read a good fic/comic where she interacts with the other beast leaders seriously... I'm so sad she didn't get proper dialogue with Saki or Yuuma despite them being as much of a threat as Yachie. As for something I would like to make myself... A visual retelling of some of Koda Rohan's works (especially Furyubutsu) but with Keiki as the protag is an idea I've had for 2-3 years but if I ever get to it, it'll probably just be little doodles :-)
Something that makes me think of them: Koda Rohan's work again lol (delusional)

I just wanna say I don't know much at all about Touhou but my friend shows me your art sometimes and I think the way you draw flandre is very good she's so small and so kiddy and it's nice to not see her drawn like a murder-crazy monster keep up the great work
Ohoho! then if you're new around these parts i am absolutely DELIGHTED to inform you that the "murder crazy monster" flandre is one hundred percent a fanon fabrication! (which by the way i loathe with every fiber of my being) now i'll rant to you a little bc i never miss a chance to show Flandre's good character charms sorry its my autistic brain going supercharged, critical mass even, whenever flan is mentioned, shes been a character ive held very dear to me since i was barely 13 (almost twelve years ago!) so you have to imagine my brain sizzling like soda with mentos as i'm typing this
Y'see, this uh. portrayal dates back from when our only source of flandres character was her introduction in touhou 6: EoSD (2002). Now. she DID flex about being strong and scary and threatening etc etc but what people dont get is that it was just for show! yknow! like a kid in their ebony dementia raven way phase. You cant tell me you'd see a kid in their edgy mary sue phase who blasts nightcore evanescence from the shared family computer all day and take them seriously.
after you defeat her you find out that the child is absolutely clueless on what shes doing, knows ABSOLUTELY nothing about socialization 101 and thought scaring the hell out of you was how you make pals, but if you play the reimu route she offers to give you a cake to thank you for playing with her (which has blood as an ingredient so reimu refuses but flan doesnt KNOW that humans dont drink their own blood. also she doesnt hunt her own food like remi does so thats actually sakuya's cooking)
Tumblr media
so she DOES try to be your friend. basically the kids confused to an absurd degree but shes absolutely got the spirit
My second point: there are little character sheets written from the PoV of Akyuu which serve as official references (called Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, 2007! I always recommend this as a must-read for new fans!), and it was the first clue, a little nudge, a little trail of breadcrumbs leading to the fact that Maybe the rumors that remilia locked up her sister are actually just rumors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then it got confirmed in Cheating Detective Satori (2019-ongoing official manga written by ZUN w guest artists for each chapter) which portrays flan and not only is she super excited about showing off her collection of dolls and stuffed animals to sakuya but also she says this.
Tumblr media
Flan is actually very introverted and CHOOSES to stay in the basement. None of that "remilia locked her up" bs, it's officially debunked!
Tumblr media
(and the day i stop showing this panel of CDS to defend her characterization, you can assume that i am deceased)
ALSO. LITTLE RASCAL SAVED GENSOKYO T W I C E. First, she used her destruction powers to disintegrate a METEOR that was headed for the scarlet devil mansion and would have an impact radius that would reach all the way to youkai mountain. She made it explode and went back to her basement to take a nap (and Remilia tried to take the credit for that but failed horribly)
AND THEN theres touhou 17.5 where she's the ONLY playable character that actually solves the incident. Again, her power to destroy anything made her the ONLY gensokyo resident able to face Yuuma without her eating Flan's bullet for lunch.
So yeah! her reputation is atrocious but the gal's not even closely as bad as people make her seem.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk i am here every day same hour and i will talk your hear off about Flandre Scarlet and i will defend her portrayal until my last breath.
PS: little headcanon moment yeah woo yeah but uhh in my head i always pictured her voiced by Ikue Otani, best known as the voice of pikachu, but specifically >her role as Hana from Ojamajo Doremi<
PPS: if you're new around here; despite everything, flandre is not actually my favorite touhou. no, nononono she is only second. Nah, the honor of the gold medal goes to ✨Her✨. do NOT get me started. I will talk for days without taking a breath between sentences.

Satsuki Rin
Satsuki Rin is a cut playable character. All that remains of her is a name and two spell cards associated with it. The fandom heavily associated her with a design from a circle cut, but that is actually an unrelated 'poster girl'. Nevertheless, that is still the most common fanon design.
Rin Satsuki (Not to be confused with Rin Kaenbyou, same series very different character. Unless..?) is a character we only know of through leftover code in EoSD. She was projected to be a third playable character to the game, but was cut due to time constraints. There's lots of speculation around who she could have been, and it's widely accepted she was a Kirin Nurse. There is a poster of an unknown girl from the Comiket where EoSD was promoted, and though this has been unconfirmed as Rin, many still use her as a basis of Rin fan designs. There is a design for Rin that the developer ZUN made, but it is lost media at this point.

anti-piracy measures
Tumblr media
So, there was an official program put out to convert the original Higurashi Visual Novels to a GBA rom format to either play on emulators or a homebrew cart. This anti-piracy measure was intended to trigger if it detected that you were trying this on a pirated copy of the visual novel. After booting up the rom file, the screen will just have Rena insult you and then promptly dox you with your PC user name and IP address. I don't think this works in the final release, but people did get it working again in recent years. Since it doesn't work properly I think this can be considered accidentally cut content.

Femslash fic tournament Round 1.2
you make a really good girl (as girls go) Ship: Azula/Yue Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/22269148/chapters/53178208 Summary: “Oh spirits,” Azula says, grinning widely. The Water Tribe is full of idiots. “You don’t want to marry Zuko, he’s useless. Also, he’s already engaged.”
“He is?” Yue blinks at her.
“Of course he is, he’s going to be the Fire Lord, he’s been engaged since he was twelve,” Azula says. A useless Fire Lord who she’s going to have to prop up, if not outright usurp, but Fire Lord all the same.
The things she does for this family, she swears.
If you want femslash, you won't find a fic better than this. It's too good. An Azula/Yue arranged marriage AU, except they're arranging the marriage themselves. Features such things as: Yue's lesbian awakening. Azula being badass. Hahn getting punched in the face. And much more.
Saturn's Octagram Ship: Ran/Youmu, Yukari/Yuyuko, Yukari/Okina Fandom: Touhou Project Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/49869343/ Summary: Unbeknownst to all but a select few, Yakumo Yukari has been missing from Gensoukyou for nearly a year. Those trying to keep this secret and resolve the situation reveal - or discover - who she is in their eyes and how she shapes their view of the world. A story of the marks one leaves on others, the limits of duty, and the depths of what one does for love.
An unbelievable sleeper of a fic I’ve read. Extremely gripping, really intriguing, it never lets you go from the onset with its given mystery. The way the characters are portrayed here are very unique compared to most canon or even fanon portrayals- especially notable for a series like Touhou. Please read Saturn’s Octagram- you won’t regret it!
Every Little Part of You Ship: Ruby Rose/Yang Xiao Long Fandom: RWBY Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/11089944 Summary: [modern AU, Enabler/1ncest] It's hard to like your half-sister when she's proof that your father has moved on. That's how Yang Branwen felt since they were kids, barely seeing Ruby Rose that whole time. And now she's about to spend half of her summer with her distant family. How is she going to deal with that? Even worse… how is she going to deal with Ruby getting HOT?!

This is kinda vague for a Touhou question but who is the girl with the rainbow wings?? They look like shards and they’re so pretty I love her design sm
that's flandre scarlet! she's one of the most famous characters in the series, so i'm not surprised you've seen her a lot. weirdly enough though, she's not as important in canon material as her prominence in fandom and internet culture seems to suggest.
Tumblr media
her first appearance was in the sixth game in the project, touhou koumakyou ~ the embodiment of scarlet devil., which is undeniably the most popular game in the franchise. this is partly because it's the first game in the series to run on windows systems, and the earliest one to still be in print. not to mention it has arguably become the earliest "relevant" installment in terms of canon, since the plots of games released before it have largely been ignored, in what can be retroactively called a soft reboot of sorts, although it wasn't planned to be at first. in this game, flandre is the extra stage boss encounter, and so she's the final, hardest boss you can fight.
as far as personality goes, flandre is a very trope-y character by modern standards. she's a 500 year old vampire who is extremely dangerous, but behaves like a little child. she's very naive and earnest, wanting nothing more than someone to play with. however, she doesn't know her own limits, and her "playing" is a bit too much for most people to handle if they encounter her. so, to keep from too much damage being dealt in gensoukyou, she stays kept in the basement of her sister remilia's mansion (which, for the record, she seems perfectly content with).
flandre is one of those characters who is, pardon the pun, flanderized in fandom constantly. while in canon, she's not much more than a regular-if-rambunctious child emotionally, the fandom had a habit of, for lack of a better word, yandere-fying her—especially back in the 2000s; less so nowadays. she was often depicted as a crazed lunatic, with tendencies of going on a rampage in a lust for blood. if you couldn't tell, i despise this interpretation, and it tarnished her reputation to me somewhat. nowadays i can look past it, but for a long time it was hard not to, since there wasn't much to her character in canon materials to appreciate, leaving her fanon representation to drown them out in contrast.
character inspiration wise, flandre is... a vampire. yeah, that's about it. i don't really enjoy koumakyou's cast very much, partly due to how little depth there is to their inspiration. there's not a lot of subtext to koumakyou's plot; it's closer to most other shmups of its ilk in that the plot in this era of the series is more of a set-piece to justify the gameplay, and this extends to the game's cast as well. most of koumakyou's characters get more meat to them as they return in later spinoff materials, but as for flandre, well...
following her debut, she would not show up again. for a long time. aside from a single short article in the spinoff book touhou bunkachou ~ bohemian archive in japanese red., and a dialogue-less boss encounter for one or two short stages in touhou bunkachou ~ shoot the bullet., she all but vanished from the series entirely. she had zero speaking lines for 14 years. despite this, she remained one of, if not the single most popular character in the fanbase, due to the aforementioned fan interpretations of her, along with her prominence in memes like ran ran ruu.
this lack of appearances has changed recently, though. out of nowhere in 2020, she made a minor appearance in an ongoing manga, touhou chireikiden hansoku tantei satori, and then about 2 years after this she appeared in the action game spinoff, touhou gouyoku ibun ~ suibotsushita chinshuu jigoku, as a playable protagonist of all things! needless to say, she's had a bit of a resurgence, some time after her prominence has finally begun to fade away a fair bit in fandom. its made me change my opinion of her quite a bit, since, hey, now she actually has something to offer as a character! im genuinely looking forward to seeing what more of her zun might be thinking of including in the future, if he continues this trend.
Tumblr media
while we're on positives, her design: man, it rocks. i'm sure her iconic character design is a huge factor in why she caught on in the fanbase for so long. the wings and her lævateinn lance make for an unmistakable silhouette. even if her design doesn't borrow much inspiration from any specific legends of vampires or whatnot, it still makes itself memorable with just its iconography, to the point where she's instantly recognizable even to people who don't know her name. people may rag on zun's art for his poor anatomy (which he has drastically improved on over the years, i might add), but he is undeniably a master of character design. i'll defend him on this front any day.
overall, flandre isn't someone i'm super attached to, but i can't deny her importance to the franchise overall, and i'm slowly growing on her as her relevance to the series has reemerged in recent years. shine on, you crazy 16 diamonds.

Okay that touhou fanon year post I made earlier is gonna be my last one.
It has become more and more difficult to read through these doujins by the year. When I set my mind on something I tend do it very thoroughly. My sources were all over the place. I used pixiv, mangadex, dynasty-scans, danbooru, nico seiga, and the wiki to try and read all of the touhou doujins I could within each year. While doing all that, I'm writing down any tropes that caught on among multiple creators.
It's uuuh...a bit much. It was fun when I started doing it, but it was mostly because there was less content and that content was easier to search for. The closer I get to modern times, the more scattered the materials become. I started reading fanworks that I had no interest in just so I can stay accurate. I stopped watching anime to make sure I had time for reading. I even read material I missed from previous years just to make sure I can mention it if I missed something.
I'm too thorough, but if I started researching for the next fanon year post and cut down the amount of content I read it wouldn't feel the same.
So yeah, that's my last one. I did cover about 10 whole years of content in these posts. That's a lot of reading.
This doesn't mean I'll stop reading doujins, I'm just doing it at my own leisure now. I still gotta catch up with the touhou games and canon material anyway.
It was fun ride for most of it. The touhou community is awesome.

7. NOTP for your muse?
Tumblr media
You know, at least for Touhou, I don't really have a NOTP! There are some I prefer significantly more than other more popular ones (eg more people I meet ship Reimu/Yukari more than Reimu/Marisa) but nothing I outright hate as a ship.
12. Have you any old muses that you’d love to bring back?
Tumblr media
Eh...Kinda, a little bit. Years ago I wrote Utsuho. If you think the liberties I take with my muses here are wild enough, the way I wrote her was significantly different from any version of her I've ever seen to this day. It may not have even been good, honestly. But it was fun.
24. What about your muse are you most proud of?
Tumblr media
Well, I guess that'd be Mamizou's village? Despite never really getting to play with it much. It's the most fanon shit I've added to a canon muse without changing the character herself too drastically. Plus the villagers are really fun.

How does one get into TouHou enough to rp? I love the designs I just dk where to start
Tumblr media
Okay so, this is going to be a long answer. I would like to say that it's a simple one, but it really isn't given just how old the Touhou series is and how much media there is surrounding it both official and fanmade. So hopefully I can help walk you through things.
More under the readmore.
So, you say that you like the character designs. Which one? I think this is an important question to ask first. Which character is it that draws your attention? Because if you can figure that out, then it'll become easier to get into the series.
Touhou is a 25 year old series with 20+ games under its belt, not to mention the manga, novels, and independent music soundtracks. While this sounds incredibly daunting, I promise you that getting into the series isn't that bad if you start small. And there's absolutely no rush to learn everything about the official lore before you start RP'ing.
See, Touhou is very much kept afloat by its fanbase that creates numerous types of fanworks ranging from doujinshi manga, games, fanfics, fanart, and just about anything else you can think of. Due to the vagueness of the writing in Touhou, this usually leads to the fans filling in those holes with their own headcanons which the creator ZUN, is 100% supportive of as long as you follow his guidelines.
(The guidelines are real simple. Just don't post video game endings, or create fanworks that depict stuff that could be considered illegal in a real life situation.)
Anyway, because a lot of fanmade Touhou content runs on fanon, it's perfectly fine if you can't get the character down to canon in your first RP experience. Touhou fans are usually laid back about that kind of stuff, and if they're not, ignore them. Explore Touhou in your own time and use your own judgement when creating your character.
So, now that I've told you all this I want to go back to my original question. Is there a character you like? Because if there is, then my best advice would be to hop on over to the Touhou Wiki to look them up and see what official sources they appear in.
Of course it never hurts to also look at fanworks for inspiration, but I must warn you. If you're new to the Touhou fandom and are coming from another Western fandom then you may be a bit shocked. Some people can be into some... things you may not like.
It's an unfortunate fact of being a Touhou fan that you're going to run into unfavorable stuff when searching for fanworks on image boards and the like. It may take some time to learn how to avoid them but it's really easy to figure it out and curate your own space.
The main thing to remember when you run into something that you think might be gross or uncomfortable is to stop, don't freak out, and click off the page.
In the end, Touhou is about creativity freedom and that pretty much extends to everyone who's interested in the series. So don't stress too much about trying to get the character 100% right on your first try. For the most part you can meet people will be supportive of your portrayal and continue to be as you improve.
I hope any or all of this helps! Happy RP'ing! o/

Thinking about the recent LostWord event (and LW overall)
Tumblr media
"In this event we go back to the High School Gensokyo AU and-" no thank you.
Okay, so I have to come clean here. While I’ve tried to be nice about the game, it’s becoming clear the events in LostWord are just... not good. Of all the events I’ve played, there is only one event I’ve liked without caveats. Every other event has either disappointed me in some way, has had an extremely sketchy scenario that I low key hate (e.g. "what if some of the strongest characters in Touhou but in maid outfits tho???") or has just been extremely mid.
I don’t want to give the LostWord writers too much shit. It’s clear from the LostWord’s main campaign that they can do good stuff. There’s probably all sorts of reasons why the events are the way they are. Instead of writing organic plots, they probably have to work with limits like “we’re doing a Christmas event and the characters we’re pushing are the Lunarians”. The type of stories they can tell are probably limited because LostWord is a gacha RPG (and the main interaction is fighting other characters). There’s also an event every few weeks and if they’ve never stopped since the game launched, they’ve been churning out events for 2 years non-stop.
With all of that said, none of those reasons have stopped me from growing disinterested in LostWord. Note that I still played through the event for all the rewards. I still have a marked interest in the game’s main campaign. And I still think LostWord is worth watching just to see how it may (or may not) impact the fanon of newer Touhou characters.
I just don’t feel like posting about every LostWord related thing anymore. I’ll definitely do posts about the main campaign. But I’m not gonna post about any old event unless it’s really good...or really bad.

🔥 any touhou or just touhou in general
I couldn't really think of anything better off the top of my head, and I don't know that this is really even a hot take anymore? But like, saying this as someone who does appreciate EoSD for what it did, I do feel it does (or at least used to) get a bit more credit than it deserves?
This may be personal bias talking, but it does annoy me when people treat EoSD as the first game in the series and either dismiss or just don't bother to learn about the PC-98 games. (and this may also be influenced by a similar frustration over Bronies treating older generations of MLP the same way, writing off G1 and G3 because of G3.5's issues) I will admit that it's on some level understandable given PC-98's relative inaccessibility, ambiguous-at-best canonical status, and ZUN's apparent reluctance to aknowledge them, but it still feels really reductive to me. That's also something that seems to have improved in recent years at least, but it's still an attitude I run into from time to time that just bothers me.
On the flipside, while EoSD was what kicked off the windows version of Touhou and everything great that came of it, I personally kinda feel like PCB did more to refine the series and make it work in the long run, both gameplay-wise and narratively. EoSD is a great little self-contained adventure, but PCB brought in Yukari and everything she represents, which I feel like in turn paved the way for the stuff I like about the more recent game's storytelling. (I like that Touhou has maintained this nice balance of deep-yet-ambiguous mythos, with a still fairly chill episodic structure, not leaning too hard in either direction for the most part. LoLK seems to be the big exception, but even then it's still an exception)
I'll also say I used to be a lot harsher on EoSD than I am nowadays; it felt when I was first getting into Touhou like I couldn't escape the Scarlet Devil Mansion crew, and what I was seeing a lot of at the time was their flanderized fanon characterizations, so I was... Not the most fond of them for a while. Since then, it's felt like people have come to appreciate the casts of later games as well, (heck if anything, now I'm the one not in the loop about the newer groups, something about another tengu, and a mining centipede lady?) and I've been seeing more content of the SDM crew that isn't just reducing them to one-note jokes or forced character archetypes (Flandere is not a yandere!) so I've been able to enjoy them a lot more now.
So, yeah, that's my Touhou "hot take"; EoSD is overrated, except by this point it is in fact just rated the correct amount, so I don't have a lot to say here.
...
Watch me, in two or three months from now, suddenly remember or come up with an actual scorching hot take and have to revisit this, lol

I love this blog, even though I'm isn't that much active in tumblr for multiple reasons. I always checking this blog if is something were wroten in here, it kinda could also calming me down a little since I've getting a bunch of stress recently, due to how awful is community I'm in sometimes and other reasons, but this blog will kinda always live in my memory, I wish for ya good mental health with physical health including, from some previous posts you've made it seems you're really need some health! I've made this little post to make you feel a bit better in this planet we call Earth, and you're really can motivate someone if you keep going with this! Good luck. I'm from Ukraine btw.
I'm so so happy that you've found such joy in my blog! I have a few blogs that I check daily like it's the morning paper, so it warms my heart to see that you feel that way towards mine! I want to try post more, but consistency is not my forte, ahaha- and I want to try not to compromise on my content (which is probably how a lot of my posts get so long winded and specific and long because I just want to try get everything out the exact way I mention it in my head and make it as understandable and comprehensive as I can including this very bracket that I've noticed now has over 50 words despite it intending to be a short aside, ahaha~)
Thank you for the wishes of health, I had your post in my head whilst I was going through a stomach bug actually, so thank you- I'm not going through anything too serious, just trying to investigate some digestive and bladder issues. I ended up neglecting myself so I've been trying to get back on track, eating properly and building up a bit of muscle mass. I want to keep doing my best for myself and the people I care about and the people I could potentially help!
More than anything this year I want to show my love and passion deeply. I started this to try and force myself to rethink and recontextualise issues that I was going through (and some asks had perfect timing, such as the tengu moving one ahaha) and frame it in a way without judgement (and get writing practice in).
Touhou has been the backbone and cornerstone of my life for 10 years now, from Canon to fanon, its has inspired and changed so so many things about me, the way I feel and the way I write- but I always felt odd that I never participated in any fan content, outside of a few memes and short one-shots. So this has been a wonderful opportunity for me, and hearing that it's helped you just as much as it has me is delightful!
Thank you so much for this message, and I hope touhoutivations continues to make you smile, and I wish you nothing but the best! 🙂
