Water is wet, the sky is blue, and Eddie Munson is a music snob.
Sure, he listens to more music than Steve even knew existed. Sure, he can curate a playlist that gets you from Korn to Disney without it feeling jarring. Sure, he can give you a full college quality lecture on the history of modern rock and metal and how it can all be traced back to the blues.
But he’s also the same guy who brutally eviscerates anything that even approaches popularity. He’s watched Eddie drop bands the second their music starts making radio play because it’s a short trip to an album that’s been engineered in a lab for maximum radio play.
An educated music snob is still a snob is the point.
But the rest of their friend group is also a collection of snobs and bitches, so when Eddie suggested they do a Spotify Wrapped viewing party it quickly became an annual tradition. They all make sure they have the night off when the Wrapped drops, meeting up at Steve’s house where they spend the night stuffing their faces and roasting each other for the music that made up their soundtrack to the year.
Eddie the Snobbish is of course the most vocal critic.
“Girl in Red, Buckley, really? There is such a thing as leaning too far into the stereotype.”
“Get fucked, Munson, they’re my number five.”
“And your number two is Hayley Kiyoko, but she’s actually good so I kept her out of it. Honestly, it’d be faster to just shout from the rooftops that you’re queer.”
“Yeah, yeah, wait ‘til we get to you, Eddie.”
“I drew 7 so you’ll have to wait a little bit longer.
It goes like that all night. Eddie makes at least one comment about each person’s wrapped as the night goes on. But then everyone takes at least one crack at the others. From listen time to top genres nothing is safe and nothing is sacred. Sometimes the only comment needed is the sounds of nine other people shrieking in laughter because Accidentally in Love from the Shrek 2 soundtrack cracked your top 5.
“Seriously, Sinclair, the rest of it is so good!”
“I refuse to be critiqued by the same man I caught singing Nickelback last week.”
“Damn, seeing the family resemblance between you and Lady Applejack now.”
Sometimes his mockery is flavored like concern.
“William, the top .05% of Mitski listeners? Do you need help? Should we call your mom? This feels like a cry for help.”
“She’s classically trained, musically a genius. Sorry, we can’t all spend our time listening to Ozzy struggle through a basic melody.”
And Eddie isn’t afraid to get other people in on his snobbery.
“Ten bucks, Stevie, your little Dusty has Weird Al in his top 5.”
“I don’t make bets, I know I’m going to lose. That’d be like saying ‘I bet he’s going to have Neverending Story in his top 5’, it’s practically guaranteed.”
Robin’s not as afraid to get involved, “Five bucks, Neverending Story is his number 1.”
“Oh you’re on, Bucks, no way it’s not a parody.”
They’re both wrong, deciding that neither is out the money, and Steve wishing he had gone ahead and bet when it turns out to be a movie instrumental. “He can’t listen to music with words when he’s building shit, and he’s always tinkering with something in his room.”
“It was from the Neverending Story soundtrack, I still think that means I win.”
“Absolutely not.”
It’s always a big moment when it’s finally Eddie’s turn, he’s the whole reason they had to start drawing their places at random. He spends so much time talking shit about everyone else’s music taste that by the time his turn rolls around half the group is ravenous, a pack of feral dogs snarling at a feast before them,  ready to give him a taste of his own medicine.
The earliest bits are the most boring. The strange emotion tags are always a little jarring, though no one is surprised when spooky makes its way onto Eddie’s. It’s a little concerning just how much time Eddie is clocking on Spotify, “Over 40,000 minutes, Eddie, that’s almost an entire month.”
“How come your math is never that quick when you’re adding up your damage, Henderson?”
And then Spotify helpfully announces that Eddie Munson's most played song of the year is Head Over Heels by Tears for fucking Fears, clocking in at 267 plays.
It could go without saying that all hell then breaks loose, but then not saying it makes it sound like a regular amount of hell is breaking loose. And not the kind of hell that can only come from a room full of people who show their affection through ruthless teasing and mockery finding a massive hole in the armor of someone who had spent most of their friendship unassailable.
It’s mean. It’s targeted. It’s the standard brand of teasing that this group is built on.
It would be a lot funnier if Eddie, someone who is normally pretty good about taking the same kind of shit that he deals out, didn’t look like he wanted the floor to swallow him up.
The jokes all reach a logical end. The kids have a killer’s instinct when it comes to weakness, but they’re soft where it counts, and there’s not a joke in the world that’s still funny when it’s being laughed at instead of with.
And Steve, normally the first to tease Eddie about his dad rock playlist can’t think of a single thing to say that isn’t going to come out, “Why was your day with the most listens right after the weekend trip we took for my birthday?”
That wasn’t going to be, “Do you want this the way that I do?”
The rest of the reveal is standard, nearly 19 hours of playtime does put Tears for Fears in the 5th spot of Eddie’s Top Artists but no one comments on it. Steve doesn’t even make fun of Eddie for being the only person under 40 to still listen to Metallica.
Because he’s finally found something to say that isn’t going to come out, “Do you know someone else who only listens to new wave or do listen to that song and think about me?”
“I’m going next.” Eddie finally, finally, makes eye contact with him instead of staring out into the middle distance. Maybe his announcement does sound more like, ‘let me say it back.’
“Steve, you drew last. Nancy’s next.”
Nancy, who knows him uniquely. Knows him in a way that no one, except maybe Eddie one day, ever will. Nancy cuts through the bullshit decisively. “Steve can go next.”
“No appreciation for the rules, why do we even have them?”
Steve does not give a single shit about his wrapped outside of it being a source of amusement for his friends. His taste in music is as close to nonexistent as it gets and, really, if he’s going to listen to something he’s probably going to pick a book over music if he’s by himself.
Except this year.
The teasing is a little tamer now. Normally, Steve is happy to take the brunt of it.
From Eddie picking at his lack of taste. “Pick a genre, Steve, god.”
To the kids joining in because they want to impress Eddie, “Can you even listen to the playlist without getting whiplash? I Will Survive to Part of Your World, jeez.” Nevermind that they’re both basically power ballads, and Wheeler can mock but I Will Survive was the soundtrack to his break up with Nance and sometimes he wants to be both nostalgic and angry-sad.
This year is quiet, like they’re worried they went too far with Eddie and now they’re afraid to take shots at their other favorite babysitter.
It’s fine. Steve has pretty much unfailingly had one song playing at any point anymore. Maybe it took him a little longer than April, but he knows without a doubt what his top song of the year is going to be.
Eddie takes the armchair for Wrapped nights, he’s the meanest normally and says he wants to be out of the direct line of fire of any noogies or Robin’s lethal elbows. It means Steve has to reach to kick the side of the chair to make sure Eddie is watching.
Rainbow in the Dark was Steve’s number one song this year with 171 plays.
And maybe it would be appropriate to say that all hell breaks loose once again. Steve wouldn’t really know, too busy staring at Eddie. He’s in the eye of the storm now, while chaos breaks out around him Steve can only wait to see how Eddie reacts.
Wonders if that pink blush is because Eddie realizes that the day he repeated it the most was right after he heard Eddie play it for the first time. Fell asleep to it playing on repeat, thinking about Eddie’s fingers and Eddie’s smile, drowning out the sounds of fireworks that still trigger panic.
"It makes me think of you," Eddie, brave and shy and only hiding part of his face behind his hair, answers the only question Steve needed answered.
"Yeah," he agrees, hoping it sounds less like a breathless demand for reassurance and more like, 'listening to this song all year was the closest I could get to imagining what it could be like having you.'
"Yeah." And Steve hears, 'I  still expect to be wined and dined, Harrington.' Maybe because it's the kind of silly request Eddie would make, or maybe he just likes giving the people he cares about everything he can.
"But seriously, Stevie, why the fuck is Careless Whisper in your top 5? It should be a crime for Dio and George Michael to be that close together."

@gammaragee asked: 🎥 - What’s your favourite tv show/movie? // ( accepting )
Okay, strap in ⸺ this is gonna get long I can feel it in my bones HGFDSGK I cannot. . . not talk about both of these things in a stupid amount of detail. I'm literally gonna just go ahead and stick the keep reading here.
Tumblr media
Favourite shows ! I'll start off with SCRUBS. Oh, how I adore this show with every fibre of my being. My stepdad, someone pretty important to me, worked in the emergency room, and actually started his internship within a year of Scrubs beginning. So, watching it with him meant it was always going to cement itself into a special corner of my heart, but even with that aside ⸺ the show is just damn good. It's hilarious, it's heart wrenching, it's got a killer soundtrack each and every season. The characters feel so real, no matter how goofy they or the situations their in are at times.
I simply just think of the episode My Screw Up or My Fallen Idol and I feel a pit in my gut, I tear up. Everyone always brings those episodes up when talking about Scrubs, but there's a reason for that. MAN it's some good T.V. I hardly ever listen to podcasts, but the Scrubs rewatch podcast was one I tuned in for.
The way J.D. sees the world, his little fantasy cutaways, his rambles ⸺ hate to relate to the man LOL but boy does that hit home here. I was thinking about including a favourite scene but I couldn't. The whole show is just everything.
Tumblr media
Next up: SUPERNATURAL. Man. I actually haven't seen much of the show past season nine. And even then, I haven't watched seasons 8 or 9 since they came out about ten years ago. And there's 15 seasons in total. That said, the first five seasons of that show. . . Holy hell. I can't begin to get into the way that show makes me feel 😭 It's so nostalgic, it's like coming home after a long time away. My one and only tattoo ( so far lmao ) is from that show. I know it can be cheesy at times, but that adds to its charm for me. I love how of it's time the first few seasons are.
The visuals of it, it's so aesthetically beautiful. And God, when the emotional scenes hit. . . they HIT. They punch through to the depths of my very soul.
There are things about both the brothers I find relatable. They're comforting to me, they're like family.
Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least, THE GOOD PLACE. I nearly didn't watch this one. I got into it around the middle of seasons three, but I only knew the premise of "woman who should be in hell ends up in heaven by mistake". Which, if you've watched to show, you know is definitely not the only thing that happens DHGKSJ
I won't go into detail because I always want to avoid spoilers about it where I can because the twists the plot takes throughout the seasons are a lot of fun to experience first hand. And, even if you do know, the show is still super worth it. It sent me down my own philosophy rabbit hole for months. Already interested in it before, I've kept up on it since, I watch lectures whenever they pop up.
The finale. . . UUGGHGKSJDHGKS. One of the best on television. That show fundamentally changed me. I am chronically bad at finishing things, but I have finished both Scrubs and the Good Place. Boy am I glad I have. Best finales ever.
Tumblr media
Alright this got away from me very quickly HGSDJK
I'll be brief here fhdskjfds so MOVIES ⸺ my top 7 are:
Willow
Meet the Robinsons
Shawshank Redemption
Lo
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Stardust
Here is my LETTERBOXD account.
A list of MY FAVOURITE FILMS.
( bonus ⸺ here are my favourite horror movies, as well as my ranking for animated Disney movies; I'm currently working on a list of Jessica's favourite movies for a post on here at some point. )

Thoughts On: Wish
Tumblr media
I'll be honest, save for Magnifico, I came into this movie with pretty low expectations, so I'm glad Disney's centennial celebration film wound up being so enjoyable!
For starters, the animation is gorgeous! I first fell in love with the Meander art style way back with Paperman, so it's great to see something similar be used here as well, especially considering the occasion. It was also really fun trying to see just how many references I could find; even the title opening is a callback to the older films, like Snow White! And the watercolor backgrounds looked very reminiscent of Classic Disney too. But the best thing about these callbacks for me are definitely the end credits, which showed a handful of characters from almost every single animated Disney film ever made, including:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm happy my boys are getting so much recognition this year! Woo!
Characters, setting, plot, and music were all great too, and like I said earlier, Magnifico was the one thing I was looking forward to the most, and as Disney first straightforwardly evil villain in the last thirteen years, I'm relieved he didn't disappoint. Hopefully there'll be more like him in the future. Star is of course adorable and I need ten plushies of this silly little guy immediately, and I'll also definitely be listening to the soundtrack on repeat later. My favorite song wasn't either the signature or villain songs, though, but the rallying cry, Knowing What I Know Now! It's fun and energetic, and Amaya joining in towards the end is just the cherry on top! And the people of Rosas all coming together to save their kingdom, rather than leaving everything in the hands of one person, is the perfect payoff.
Really, if I had any major complaints, I do think some scenes could've been paced out just a little more (would've really loved to have learned more about Magnifico for example, or at least the book), and as much as I loved Star and Amaya:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also wish (heh) we'd gotten Pretty Star Boy and Evil Power Couple instead!
Overall, a very entertaining film to celebrate one hundred years of Disney!

The Little Mermaid Live Action
Tumblr media
I’m so freaking prepared for this movie and it’s not even funny!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve watched the trailer so many times since the full trailer was released.
The original Little Mermaid movie was and is still one of my all time favorite Disney movies. And now just seeing in come to life is amazing. I can already tell you I’m gonna be in tears probably halfway through the movie.
There are probably a million reasons why I’m so excited but I’m only going to talk about my top 3.
Tumblr media
Halle Bailey: She such a beautiful woman and a wonderful singer. I heard her singing only a few times before, but when I really heard her voice was during the Disney World 50th Anniversary and she sang “Can You Feel Love Tonight” and she has such a beautiful singing voice. I also read this article somewhere online about Jodi Benson (the original Ariel) and her opinion about Halle playing Ariel. Jodi Benson has been very supportive of Halle as she plays Ariel and was there when Halle received backlash about her playing Ariel. So, Jodi Benson talked about how it doesn’t matter who you are, what you look, or where your from, it’s about the spirit of the character is what’s important. I 100% agree with her. Halle Bailey is going to do a wonderful job by bring one of the most iconic Disney princesses to life.
Tumblr media
2. The Music and New Songs: Can we just take a moment and talk about Lin-Manuel Miranda?!?! As everyone should know, he wrote the Broadway musicals “In The Heights” and “Hamilton” and has also written music for other Disney movies like “Encanto” and “Moana”. Lin-Manuel is also a big Disney fan and he also named his son after Sebastian in the little mermaid. And now he gets to work with Alan Menken (the original music composer) and he was the one who inspired Lin-Manuel to compose music. He basically gets to work with his hero and that’s amazing!!!! I’ve also read somewhere that Lin-Manuel might be Chef Louis in the movie.
Ok, now the music. We all have to admit that the original soundtrack slaps!!!! They are classics and masterpieces. I can’t wait to listen to it again in the live action. I have a feeling some of the songs might be a tad different from the original, but that doesn’t bother me. The have done the same thing in all the other Disney live action movies and I love those movies.
I’m really excited to hear these new songs in the movie. As I said earlier, Lin-Manuel Miranda got up work with Alan Menken and wrote 4 new songs. Can’t wait to hear them and listen to them like a million times once the soundtrack comes out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. The Actors: Besides Halle Bailey as Ariel, I think they did an amazing job with the cast. I mean, you could have picked better than these actors and actresses to play these roles.
Awkwafina as Scuttle: If you didn’t know who she is, Awkwafina was in “Jumamji: The Next Level” and “Chang-Shi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”. She is a really funny actress and always makes me laugh. I think she will make a great Scuttle.
Daveed Diggs as Sebastian: I think everyone had a feeling that he would play Sebastian before the trailer even came out. He was in “Hamilton” with Lin-Manuel Miranda and also rapped a whole bunch in the musical. I read somewhere that he might rap in the movie and that makes me happy. He honestly fits the role of Sebastian perfectly.
Melissa McCarthy as Ursula: Just like Awkwafina, Melissa McCarthy also makes me laugh as well. She was in the movie “Life of the Party” and Netflix “Thunder Force”. I’m excited to see her bring out her inner diva while playing Ursula.
Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric: First of all, he is extremely cute and hot. When I first saw him I was like blushing like crazy. Also, he was in “A Dog’s Way Home” and the tv show “World On Fire”. I’m excited to see him play Prince Eric. Another thing to point out is that Prince Eric was my Disney Prince crush when I was little and that crush it starting up again.
Tumblr media
Those are my top 3 reasons why I am excited about the Live Action Little Mermaid. I won’t be able to wait any longer as it approaches theaters.

Outside of the 3 original princesses, do you have any Disney favorites? By that I mean favorite character, favorite vocal performance, favorite song, favorite movie, etc? (Apologies if you have answered these questions before.)
Yes, I have many, many, many! I'll also exclude The Little Mermaid, as the original four princess movies are equally my favorite but! For more broad answers:
Favorite character: since i always talk about female characters, i'll switch it up and do a male character! hercules is my entire heart
Favorite vocal performance: again i'm going to try to say something that isn't obvious but i think 'my own home' from jungle book is captivating and kathryn beaumont is a certified genius
Favorite song: i bring you a song from bambi makes my heart smile and is the essence of romance imo
Favorite movie: hmmm i like so many like fantasia, bambi...but perhaps fun and fancy free??? ichabod toad? i really don't know, i like so many
But also, just for general appreciation:
pinocchio is a BEACON of light and so fascinating. i love the rich european setting and the original colors- especially the use of red- and the blue fairy is genuinely captivating. i love the realistic characterizations and the artistry is unsurpassed imo
fantasia's fairies might be the peak of filmmaking for me and i love the inclusion of classical music.
dumbo is so heart warming and i love the emphasis on his mother even though it makes me cry and i think pink elephants on parade is a bop and i love the way they included it in fantasmic
bambi is GENIUS, as i mentioned above i love the song so much but i really just think it's the spirit of filmmaking and is so real and authentic and i think it'll survive as a film until the end of time
fun and fancy free has really great water animation and cloud scenes in the bear segment but also mickey and the beanstalk is so much fun from start to finish
melody time has once upon a wintertime, which makes it have merit as a film, and i looove frances langford's voice
the adventures of ichabod and mr. toad gave us katrina and brom bones and FOR THAT i salute this film. i love the music and the old american town and like the halloween influence and the mansion and just. everything so much about it. it really is like feeling the crisp autumn air. i love the miniature scale homes of the animals in the toad segment- it's so comforting
alice in wonderland. just everything about it
peter pan - where do i even begin. the music is a religious experience, marc davis's work on tinker bell's walk is LEGENDARY, but also i was sooo intrigued by the mermaids and their design as a child. it's the high point of the film for me. i love love LOVE kathryn beaumont's wendy and mrs. darling is so dear
lady and the tramp is a movie that's so cozy- i absolutely love the smalltown american vibes and the moment with the spaghetti is iconic for GOOD reason
101 dalmatians deserves to exist for anita and anita alone
sword in the stone is a film i loved as a child. madam mim was fun to me and she freaks me out now, though i do love her attractive form, ngl i kinda think kay is cute, and i LOVE archimedes and merlin is a top disney character for me
the aristocats ALL the female characters <333
robin hood gave us lady kluck is one of my top ten characters of all time. she gave us everything and she has yet to receive her flowers
winnie the pooh is cute
the rescuers has such an intriguing voice in miss bianca and, again, the miniature animal homes are comforting to me. i love how underground and gritty it feels
the black cauldron is an amazing experimental film that is sooo gorgeous
beauty and the beast is worth it for me because i love mrs. potts, i love the bimbettes, i think adam is intriguing, and gaston is a fav
pocahontas has one of the best soundtracks but also can we talk about NAKOMA
hercules maybe has top 5 art but also hercules as a character is someone i love so much it makes my heart physically hurt :(
mulan- i love the connections people make with her and shang being bi is pretty much is everything
princess and the frog gave us a wonderful design for tiana

Release: November 26, 2001
Lyrics:
Here I stand alone
With this weight upon my heart
And it will not go away
In my head, I keep on looking back
Right back to the start
Wondering what it was that made you change
Well, I tried, but I had to draw the line
And still this question keeps on spinning in my mind
What if I had never let you go?
Would you be the man I used to know?
If I'd stayed, if you'd tried
If we could only turn back time
But I guess we'll never know
Many roads to take
Some to joy, some to heart-ache
Anyone can lose their way
And if I said that we could turn it back
Right back to the start
Would you take the chance and make the change?
Do you think how it would have been sometimes?
Do you pray that I'd never left your side?
What if I had never let you go?
Would you be the man I used to know?
If I'd stayed, if you'd tried
If we could only turn back time
But I guess we'll never know
If only we could turn the hands of time
If I could take you back would you still be mine?
'Cause I tried, but I had to draw the line
And still this question keeps on spinning in my mind
We'll never know
What if I had never let you go?
Would you be the man I used to know?
What if I had never walked away?
'Cause I still love you more than I can say
If I'd stayed, if you'd tried
If we could only turn back time
But I guess we'll never know
Songwriter:
Benno De Goeij / Vera Ostrova / Armin J J D Van Buuren
SongFacts:
"What If" is a song by English actress Kate Winslet recorded for the animated film Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001). Winslet provided the voice of Belle in the feature film, based on the classic 1843 novel by Charles Dickens, which also stars Nicolas Cage, Jane Horrocks and Simon Callow. “What If” was written by Wayne Hector and Steve Mac, with production directed by Steve Mac. The song is a ballad that follows the film's theme, in which Belle laments the end of her and Scrooge's relationship and wonders what might have been. It was the only song released from the official film soundtrack.
It was reported in the Daily Mirror that Winslet secretly recorded the one-off single to compete for the number one spot at Christmas 2001 in the UK. The song eventually peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart, its peak. Elsewhere, “What If” was released to even greater success; It became a number one hit in Austria, Flanders and Ireland and also reached the top ten in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The critically acclaimed song won the 2002 OGAE Song Contest.[3] At Winslet's request, proceeds from the single were donated to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Sargent Cancer Care for Children.
Can't Stop the Pop described "What If" as a "ballad of epic proportions" and a "huge, soaring, Disney-esque ballad". Barbara Ellen of The Observer said it was "a sweet, lilting little Céline ditty". The British magazine Music Week wrote that Winslet could sing the title well, but noted that her divorce from Jim Threapleton would make the lyrics less "poignant".
An accompanying music video, directed by Paul Donnellon and produced by Chris Horton, shows Winslet walking through an old Victorian house haunted by the ghost of a girl, along with clips from the film.

Weekend Top Ten #615
Top Ten Songs from Pixar Films
Disney is always associated with music. The very concept of a “Disney song” is so ingrained into our cultural perception of the company, that we even have multiple sub-genres within; the “villain song”, the “I Want song”, the “comedy song”, etc. Not all Disney animated films are musicals, and not all the musicals are the same, and if you go back earlier than the Renaissance the style itself hadn’t solidified in any way, but all the same; you say “Disney song”, chances are people know what kind of thing you mean.
The same is not true of Pixar. When the company first rose to prominence in the late nineties, they felt in opposition to the standard Disney formula (despite Disney releasing all their films and, eventually, buying them outright). Disney animation was just about starting the downswing towards the end of its Renaissance era; the standard pattern established by the groundbreaking likes of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast was, arguably, starting to wear a bit thin through repetition (although I’ll definitely go to bat for late-Renaissance-era bangers like Tarzan and The Hunchback of Notre Dame). Pixar films weren’t musicals, they weren’t fairy tales, they weren’t literary adaptations or allusions. They were modern, they were comedies, they were buddy movies; they had wit and verve and contemporary references. However, right from the start, they still had songs.
Because we think of the “Disney musical” versus the “Pixar comedy”, I think we tend to overlook just how excellent some of the music in these films was, right from the off. Toy Story was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song (although it did lose to Pocahontas), and it was an accolade the studio would receive a number of times, even winning on more than one occasion. But these songs weren’t the kind of breakout Broadway bangers Disney was producing; they were, more often than not, non-diegetic, songs that functioned the way a musical number might, but were merely “on the soundtrack”. Jessie doesn’t actually sing “When She Loved Me” in Toy Story 2; there’s no evidence the characters “hear” the song at all. But as a narrative device, it serves the same purpose; it imparts emotional information in the most powerful manner possible. Even when characters in Pixar movies do sing, it’s in a “realistic” manner – like, they pick up a guitar and sing – rather than the emotional explosion of a traditional musical number.
All this is to say that Pixar films have some tremendous songs and this is a list of them. It isn’t score, though; these are all proper songs with words and that. And I’m not allowing songs that were already written. These have to be new songs that debuted in the film. And that’s that!
No apologies if some of these make you cry, by the way.
Tumblr media
When She Loved Me (Toy Story 2, 1999): I think this I the moment when the sophisticated, mature themes that underpin a lot of Pixar’s stories became very apparent. After what was essentially a knockabout buddy comedy in the first Toy Story, this really rammed home the subtext: the toys were us, parents, saying goodbye to children. There’s an inherent tragedy at the core of the Toy Story films because children will, inevitably, unthinkingly abandon their toys, but the toys will never truly abandon the children. This is heartbreakingly illustrated in this song, a tender ballad of loss that rings all too true.
Remember Me (Coco, 2017): oh Christ, here we go again; a song so good they feature it three times in three different ways. Presented initially as something of a love song, it is revealed to be an incredibly heartfelt lullaby to a child from a parent who has to go away. The simple refrain and Latin guitar helps make it feel like a classic song, something from our own childhoods. Its later use in the film is one of Pixar’s most eye-watering moments, and that’s saying something.
Lava (Lava, 2014): is it a cheat to have a song from a short? Hell no, it’s where Pixar began and it’s where they still love to shine. Lava was put out alongside Inside Out and I don’t think I’ve ever consistently cried more often in the cinema. A somewhat jaunty Hawaiian melody tells a story that feels like a creation myth, with two lovestruck volcanoes missing each other across millennia. The life-affirming triumph of love in the face of tragedy is a nice change of pace from the sadder songs we’ve had so far, but it’s no less tear-jerking.
Touch the Sky (Brave, 2012): ah, thank goodness – this isn’t sad at all! Probably one of the more under-sung songs on this list (no pun intended) it’s a stirring Celtic ballad about freedom. Whilst in some respects it’s a little on-the-nose, its evocative melody contains a lot of passion and also reminds me of the songs from Lord of the Rings, which in turn reminds of the Lord of the Rings movies, and that’s a good thing.
If I Didn’t Have You (Monsters, Inc., 2001): the first outright jaunty number on this list (and the first Pixar song to win an Oscar!), it’s a hoot as Billy Crystal and John Goodman do something of a riff on the old Frank ‘n’ Dean-style buddy-buddy duets. A beautiful pean to friendship, it’s funny and sweet and a minor bop, and is also one of the few songs here sung in-character.
Un Poco Loco (Coco, 2017): Coco is so great it’s the first film to pop up twice on this list (spoiler: it won’t be the last). This song is a blast, a really funny, silly love song about being besotted and willing to do anything despite it seeming crazy. It works so well in the film as a cathartic bonding moment for our two heroes.
Nobody Like U (Turning Red, 2022): amazingly – shockingly – this wasn’t nominated for Best Song at the Oscars. Turning Red – Pixar’s best film for maybe a decade – goes deep on the early-noughties nostalgia, no more so than in this absolutely pitch-perfect parody of a boy band. The central characters’ desire to see 4*Star sing this boppy number rings so true, and absolute top marks to Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell for making a song that really could have been sung at the MTV Awards in 2002.
You’ve Got a Friend in Me (Toy Story, 1995): the classic is here at last! With a kind of charming, louche swagger, Friend in Me is a delightfully plodding little ditty about, well, being a great friend. Randy Newman’s deep, dulcet tones are iconic (and, ahem, ripe for parody), but are also warm and – yes – friendly. There’s something about those opening bars that just makes you feel nice.
I Will Go Sailing No More (Toy Story, 1995): from triumph to tragedy with this, another oft-overlooked minor banger in the Pixar songbook. Telling the story of Buzz’s sad realisation of his own toyhood, it charts the quixotic attempts to achieve the impossible. The use of sailing as a metaphor – when obviously Buzz wants to fly – carries connotations of epic historic voyages, something melancholy and timeless; like Buzz will never board the grey ships to the west.
Le Festin (Ratatouille, 2007): a beautiful French ballad that perfectly recreates the sort of song you think of when you think of a film set in Paris. The lyrics obviously sound better in French, but they compare life and love to food, and celebrate the hero finally getting to enjoy a feast. It’s dead good.
Well, there you go – ten great tunes from, er, seven great films. Next week: Christmas!

SZA - "KILL BILL"
youtube
Don't worry, we don't have another Drake song this year...
[6.21]
Alfred Soto: The cognoscenti know we've praised any number of hellion anthems from Gretchen Wilson's to Miranda Lambert's, but none of them rode the top ten last spring for months like "Kill Bill" and none of them included the line "I just shot my ex/Not the best idea" in a singsong as dangerous as an asp. SOS has more poignant tracks, and CTRL a wider palette, but on "Kill Bill" and a dozen others SZA projects the clarity and limpidness of a Saoirse Ronan. [8]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: By sheer listening volume alone, my song of the year. Every morning from January through to mid-April I would wake up and almost instantly put on "Kill Bill" -- early-morning walks, showers, opening batteries of emails, all soundtracked by that ambivalent synth figure and those boom bap-lite drums. And yet I'm still not quite sure if "Kill Bill" is good; I've certainly listened to it more than any other SZA track, but would I defend it over any of the best songs off of Ctrl? Probably not -- it's too pat, too impressed by the cleverness of its own hook. But the qualities that annoy me about "Kill Bill" now are what endeared it to me in the first quarter of the year. In the bleakness of winter, a pop hit so niftily constructed (those guitars! the cute little switch in the last chorus! that hilarious faux-Jacob Collier choral breakdown!) was a little shard of joy. [7]
Michael Hong: SOS felt like such a step down from CTRL, a bunch of fragmentary ideas primed for Instagram captions. "Kill Bill" is murmured with the notion that any of these lines could work; with such a shrug of an instrumental it's wholly unremarkable. [3]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: I'm not asking for SZA to lay bare all her anxieties in the way she did across Ctrl, but SOS was the sort of record whose pathos felt market-tested. It was sprawling and more assured in its songwriting, but in ways that sanded down her personality. Never was that more clear than on "Kill Bill," whose chorus is sung with a wink, meant to offset the more conversational tone of her verses. It lopes around with a decorum that does nothing but make her confessions more cerebral (derogatory). The arc of the melody telegraphs it all, prim in a way that invites one to consider the dissonance. It's not interesting or clever or insightful, and SZA's best songs are all those things without sacrificing immediacy. "God forbid an artist evolve," someone might protest. Okay... we're talking about a high-concept Tarantino track here. [3]
Katherine St Asaph: This is nice, but I'm worried it will result in Quentin Tarantino learning the word "yandere." [6]
Harlan Talib Ockey: Remember that TikTok of Shakira singing along to this while mopping a carpet? [8]
Oliver Maier: SZA as cardboard cutout, hawking an unimaginative conceit that pales next to any number of other songs she has penned on the subject of jealousy and a topline so beneath her that it should have remained undiscovered in the Marianas Trench. When "Mad at Disney" feels like a fitting analogue, tonally and melodically, then there is a real problem. How'd she get here indeed. [3]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: SOS is a 23(!) track album, and "Kill Bill" is a squarely middling track, albeit one with an engaging, gimmicky premise. It's great to see SZA finally get a radio hit, but I prefer the morning coffee intimacy of "Snooze," mediative affirmations of "Good Days," rizz of "Low" or "Conceited," frenetic energy of the title track, or even the Maroon 5 sleaze of "F2F." [7]
Nortey Dowuona: SZA so fundamentally surpassed the game back with CTRL that her simply deciding to drag the R&B world kicking and screaming into the mainstream, even actually pushing rap back into the background, means she regressed. And by "regressed," I mean making the best pop single of this year and last year. It speaks to the unadventurous nature of the industry and its defenders that SZA is comfortably playing on a radio station right now or streaming somewhere in this world rather than the many better or more critically approved-of R&B stars like Victoria Monét, Ari Lennox or...no actually, who? If SZA dropping a weaker pop album that comfortably beats the best in all genres is her on a B-game... what the fuck are we doing? As a critical class, we're not supposed to be a recommendation service but a group of folks honestly engaging with the art, and even being harshly critical of it from time to time. But if we think that SZA put out a lesser album than her last one and became a superstar, maybe we shouldn't even give her the time of day and cover Jaz Karis all day everyday forever, cuz otherwise we have to say this song ain't it and wait for the SZA stan army to show up in our bergs to attack us for not recommending her but instead engaging with her. And quite frankly, nobody else this year in this genre who got recommended to me (even Sampha) wrote a lyric as good and catchy as "rather be in hell than alone." [10]
Jonathan Bradley: I would prefer a song toying with murder to be sharper in execution than these concussed musings. "I'm so mature, I'm so mature" is a funny line, but SZA is so intent on mumbling her way through the rest of this boom-bap soup that not even that gag lands properly. A warped gramophone melody plays along the way; surely this strain of toy-goth eccentricity expired with the rest of Melanie Martinez's career. [5]
Ian Mathers: Not sure how much the fanbases of SZA and Olivia Rodrigo overlap, but surely the "I'm so mature, I'm so mature" and "not the best idea" here got talked about in the same way we've been talking about some of the lines/line readings from Rodrigo's singles, right? Right??? [8]
Brad Shoup: The louder the volume, the more the production sounds like a headcold. But I can put up with it for her refrain, which is positively baroque. [6]
Taylor Alatorre: One of the few singles from (roughly) this year that feels Important in the classicist, Rolling Stone sense: for its high-concept nature, its of-the-moment relevance, its place in the murder ballad lineage, and its instantly immortal sign-off lyric. The producers take no swings for the fences here, and their woozy and vaguely off-kilter feel lets the message mostly speak for itself, rather than risk pointing to a contradictory one. You could criticize SZA's phrasing or tone for seeming not to recognize the gravity of the subject matter; such criticism won't hold water among those for whom "showed no remorse" is a familiar journalistic cliché. And while it's easy to play up the true-crime angle, the way that "Kill Bill" interprets the tragedy at is core is more interesting than that. More than mere "mind of a killer" exploitation, it invites us to consider that one of the lives lost to a murder is that of the murderer herself, and that the death of the victim is also the death of every other choice or circumstance that could have led to a different outcome. [8]
Leah Isobel: Babe, get a better therapist. [5]

Advert Alchemy: The Jingle
Tumblr media
In this series, Squideo is breaking down the eight key ingredients to turn your advertising content into gold! In the last edition of Advert Alchemy, we examined the importance of location when releasing your marketing campaign to the world. This week, we’re looking at the effectiveness of a jingle.
This short, catchy advertising technique is similar to a slogan except it’s set to a tune. Unlike a soundtrack, a jingle is only a few seconds long but they can wriggle into your customers’ memory – ensuring they remember your product for a long time!
The Power of an Earworm
An earworm is a song or melody that keeps repeating in your head. Some of the most commonly reported earworms are songs like It’s a Small World (Disney), Who Let the Dogs Out? (Baha Men), Gangnam Style (Psy), Karma Chameleon (Culture Club) and YMCA (The Village People).
A truly well-crafted jingle has the potential to become one of these insanely catchy earworms. Before we dive into some of the best jingles to grace our screens, let’s explore how to create a jingle.
Keep it simple. In the examples below, no jingle is longer than thirteen words. The shorter it is, the easier it is for your audience to remember! Use repetition, rhyme and keep your language simple.
Choose the right music. Make sure it has the right tempo and speed for the voiceover artist to sing along to. Do your market research as well to discover which music genre your audience will respond to.
Know your product. What is the unique selling point you want your jingle to convey? Do similar products use marketing jingles? How can you set yourself apart from the competition?
Jingle Jamming
Think you’re ready to create a jingle of your own? Before you do, look through Squideo’s top ten picks for the best advertising jingles. Consider what these jingles say about the brand. Which ones would work for your brand?
01. Haribo
Kids and grown-ups love it so, the happy world of Haribo.
Jingles are perfect for child-targeted advertising. These catchy songs catch their attention, ready to be repeated to their parents nonstop. The German confectionary company Haribo has used this jingle across all of its English-speaking markets for over twenty years, making it instantly recognisable to people of all ages.
Tumblr media
02. McDonald’s
Ba-da-ba-ba-baaa… I’m lovin’ it.
First used in 2003, this jingle was implemented at a time when sales for this enormous American fast-food chain was in trouble. Its stock prices had dropped and they needed to attract more customers – fast! German advertising firm Heye & Partner created this simple jingle which was rolled out internationally. It was only meant to play in McDonald’s adverts for two years… twenty years later, the jingle is still going strong.
Tumblr media
03. Cadbury’s Fudge
A finger of fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat.
To a younger generation, Cadbury’s most iconic advert is likely the Gorilla campaign which ran in 2007. Go back a few decades, however, and this jingle for Cadbury’s Fudge bar created one of the most popular advertising campaigns of the 1970s. There is a longer version which was played as a song in some adverts, however this shorter jingle remains more memorable.
Tumblr media
04. Hastings Direct
0800 00 1066.
Jingle’s usually contain one of three key pieces of information – the company name; the product; or how to get in touch. In 2005, Hasting’s Direct impressed their telephone number upon a nation – making 0800 00 1066 almost as well-known as 999. By choosing a familiar date (1066, the year of the Battle of Hastings which is taught to most Britons at school), half the work was done for them. Through repetition and the use of a catchy tune performed by their mascot Harry Hastings, the full phone number was soon memorised. Very clever!
Tumblr media
05. Compare the Market
Compare the meerkat; compare the market. Simples!
First launched in 2009 on British and Australian television, the advertisers behind this campaign were dedicated to its success from the get-go. Creating a Facebook and Twitter account for their mascot Aleksandr the meerkat, and a fictional website for comparethemeerkat.com, the advert series runs to this day. And at the end of each advert comes this memorable jingle.
Tumblr media
06. Calgon
Washing machines live longer with Calgon.
Whether or not the statement made by this jingle is true – trust us, there’s been a lot of debate over the years – the memorability certainly created a huge boom for Calgon sales. Despite Which? making a complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency in 2011 over the validity of its marketing claim, the jingle is still used in their adverts thirty years on from its introduction. A true credit to its effectiveness.
Tumblr media
07. Lilt
With a totally tropical taste.
Launched in 1975, the drink soon became associated with its jingle thanks to some memorable advertising campaigns that ran in the 1980s and 90s, including the popular “Lilt Man.” Unfortunately, in February 2023, it was announced by Lilt’s owners, Coca Cola, that the drink would be replaced by ‘Fanta Pineapple and Grapefruit.’ We’ll certainly be sad to see the last of these adverts but glad the tropical taste survives.
Tumblr media
08. Toys ‘R’ Us
I don’t want to grow up, I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us kid.
This jingle for Toys ‘R’ Us, which was used in the 1980s and 90s, and was co-written by the crime novelist James Patterson. That’s an interesting piece of trivia for your next quiz night! This memorable line was produced by the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency. The idea was to create a simple jingle that children could easily memorise and sing along with when it came on the television. It was later extended into a song.
Tumblr media
09. PC World
Where in the world? PC World.
Considering the brand no longer exists, it’s a testament to the power of a jingle that it is still remembered long after the company it represented. After its merger with Curry’s, ‘Curry’s PC World’ still used the jingle for a time in its new adverts, clearly recognising a useful marketing tool when they saw it. Removing the PC World name in 2021, the only trace left of this former retail chain is a jingle that refuses to leave the head of anyone who ever heard it.
Tumblr media
10. Cadbury’s Smash
For mash get Smash.
As the second Cadbury jingle to enter the list, it really goes to show this company knows what it’s doing! Launched in 1969, Smash is a brand of instant mashed potatoes – although it is no longer owned by Cadbury. Cadbury introduced the iconic Smash Martians in 1974 to promote their product through a catchy jingle. It was so memorable that in 2005 it was voted the UK’s most popular advert. The Martians even received their own fan mail while the advert was aired!

@skye707 tagged me! Hopefully that means I'll catch a stray Riddler..
CMON Arkhamverse, fingers crossed! Jkjk.
Ten of my favorite movies in no particular order!
This was hard af actually because as soon as I read it I forgot every movie ive ever seen. Suddenly, all cinema ceased to exist. Thanks brain.
That being said I did my best as-per my recollection and am probably missing things I quite love. Woopsie.
Rules: post 10 of your favorite movies and tag 10 people.
#1: Fantasia (1941)
This one has been my favorite since I was 2 years old. Beautiful art, Disney, and Classical music. It's just a win.
#2: The Phantom of the Opera (2005)
This is all of nothing like the book and my 15 year old emo ass really wanted Christine to go with the phantom despite all the red flags.
Now that I'm an adult I think they'd have been a lovely poly couple, and Erik needs counselling. That being said it's still one of my top favorite movies ever.. Who knew Emmy Rossom and Gerard Butler could SING?
I still love to play it and sing every word, the absolute chagrin of my daughter.
#3: Queen of the Damned (2002):
Anne Rice, Vampires, a soundtrack that quite possibly shaped my entire music taste for life--
This movie is honestly terrible, but in a SO bad its GOOD way. Cult classic 100%.
For an emo 12 year old in the early 2000's this was the best shit EVER, right there beside MCR.
#4: Pride and Prejudice (2005):
SOMETHING ABOUT ME: I love books. I love THIS book. and I love this movie based on this book. -- Mr. Darcy, you are a charmer.
#5: Yellow Submarine (1968):
Another one that's been a top favorite since I was only 2 years old.
I grew up on Beatles, and before I was emo (Around 9 years old) I had a hippy phase where I only wore tie-die and listened to 60s music, with Beatles being my top. This throws me back to them days every time.
#6: Minority Report (2002)
Let's get this out of the way first: Tom Cruise is batshit crazy as a person. I completely acknowledge this. That being said I think this movie is very well done and has a very valid moral that can forever apply to society and social justice as a whole.
It also had a very short run TV Mini series in 2015 (Without Cruise) that was a continuation/sequel of the movie, which I ABSOLUTELY loved just as much. There is only 10 episodes and I was SO sad it was cancelled
#7: Encanto (2021)
By far the newest one on this list.
Good music.
I'm in love with a 50yr old RAT man.
What else can I say?
#8: Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Another book turned movie,
ANYTHING Shakespeare is always iconic, but I think this version is absolutely my favorite. Perfect casting, perfect acting, and Dr. Willson from House is one of the main characters! (You may also recognize Professor Trelawney and Professor Lockhart from Harry Potter as your two main characters. <3 When HP first came out I can tell you I was SO excited for something different than what everyone else was because It was awesome to see them together in the same movie again, for me, since I loved this farrrrr first.
#9: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
a 90s classic, and ALSO a modern adaptation of another Shakespeare story: The Taming of the Shrew.
It's was very well done, modernizing (For the time) while still sticking to the story. Great cast, great acting, and an icon of the 1990s despite being a story of the 1590s.
I think this movie hit home in a way that other modern Shakespeare adaptations (Such as Romeo + Juliet (1996) and She's the Man 2006)) Missed the mark on. (Although, did you remember Channing Tatum was in that? I didn't! Haha.)
#10: Digimon: The Movie (2000)
Why? I can't tell you why. When this came out was at the height of me being super into Digimon. The art is different from the show in a way that I just vibe with. The entire movie just has a VIBE to it and it brings back good memories. ALL THE GOOD VIBES.
Honorable Mentions:
Counting these as ONE:
Batman (1989) Batman Returns(1992) Batman Forever (1995) Batman & Robin (1997)
SO despite having 3 different Batmans and only two being directed by Tim Burton, these movies ARE supposed to go together.
They are hokey, and for the most part I consider them a comedic AU, HOWEVER, that will never override a few things:
Firstly, these movies are what got me into Batman and Batverse originally, before the animated series came out.
Secondly, the animated series came out BECAUSE of these movies, and was at least loosely based on them (Which is why Selina was blonde in TAS, to tie in, though they later rectified that in TNBA)
And three, the ENTIRE aesthetic of the movie AND the musical scores being by Danny Elfman are their own works of absolute art that I will ALWAYS appreciate.
@caesariawrites @pharoahkittylover @arttimeoccasionallyimtired @just-an-enby-lemon @finzphoenix @geislieb @coffeeandconundrums @ednyxmatic @sh4pes-4nd-colors @spookyvoid

Someone needs to let Ali fight she needs to let out some steam
Ali and Zed are such a funny duo cuz 80% he’s teasing her for her anger and she’s being annoyed with him and then they become besties
I love how zed is so happy for Addison he is now her biggest cheerleader
z2 he was questionable but now? redeemed
Zed’s house is so well decorated btw and Addison’s. All the family photos they took to decorate her room 😂
Exceptional zed is my fave
Zed and Wyatt friendship top tier
All of Seabrook cheering zed on be z1 when everyone was rooting against him
Signature early 2000s final chorus key change slaps in exceptional zed
Exceptional zed reprise is so good
Not Eliza going searching for Wyatt’s mind probe
Willa looks so annoyed that she’s working with Bucky I love it
When zed gets into college 🥺 the exceptional zed music playing under 🥺
I’m finally me is giving early 2000s dcom vibes
Like in theory addison could take them to their new planet and they could just bring her back after right…?
As much as I love zed’s half sacrifice (half cuz he didn’t die but he did put his life on the line) it would’ve been a bit more impactful if Willa joined. All of Seabrook united as one!
We all agree that Bucky wears the hat to help hide his alien self. I mean he’s flying on the space ship so clearly he has the stardust spark!

Some of my favorite games of all time
If you were to ask me what my favorite game of all time is, i would probably say something like "Of all time? I don't know, depending on the day and my mood it could be ten different games" Or something to that effect. The games listed here are a healthy mix of some genuinely amazing, ten outta ten games and some "I played it a lot when i was a kid" With that said this list is in absolute no order, the #1 on this list is not my all time favorite game, just one of them.
10. Sims Bustin out
Alright starting off with a bit of a left curve, but Sims Bustin out is one of my favorite games of all time. Which is a statement i trust not too many people have said. Is Sims bustin out the best Sims game? No, that's probably Sims 2. Bustin out beats out 2 mostly for that sweet sweet nostalgia. Anyone who has played, and gotten into the Sims knows how addicting the game play is, balancing work, personal life, relationships is so much more enjoyable when done virtually than in real life. I have so many memories of booting this game up late at night when everyone had fallen asleep, excited to get a new promotion in my criminal career path. The gameplay of Sims Bustin out is purely addicting, and it's an addiction i haven't really shaken from childhood. Now I'm off to never say or type "Bustin out" ever again

9. Donkey Kong Country
I remember the first time playing this game, my friend invited me over and about half way through i asked "So, whats the plot exactly? Like, are we trying to rescue your girlfriend or something?" I was beside my self when my friend went "Nah, we're getting your bananas back" It's such a funny premise and shows the game doesn't take its self too seriously, beneath the surface of this over the top goofy game is genuinely one of the greatest 2D platformers of all time . One of those games that has infinite replay ability because its so much fun going through these stages. The difficulty curb isn't too crazy, and eases you into some of the most challenging but fair levels from any game. Not to mention this one of the best looking games to come from the Snes, with one of gamings best soundtracks. I genuinely love this game, and believe its worth playing, even if for only a few levels.

8. Kingdom Hearts
*silence* WHEN YOU WALK AWAY
The Kingdom hearts series has had its up and its downs, it has had it's Organization XIII and it's time travel (for some reason) the original Kingdom Hearts is still a pretty simple and straightforward game which i definitely think helps with it's longevity, i don't know what is going on in Kh3 and i played all the other games leading up to it. KH is a beautiful marriage between Square Enix and Disney, it should not work out nearly as well as it does. The developers really got things right off the bat, the worlds (for the most part, fun fact you can actually skip under the sea) are fun to explore or at the very least, thanks to the enjoyable combat system, they are fun to fight your way through. Each world of course has its own vibes, they have their own unique heartless and boss fights. If you want extra content KH has you covered. Two (pretty difficult) secret bosses to find in the Peter Pan world and Aladdin world. You also have the coliseum to go back to, eventually making your way up to the Hades cup filled with enemies you have fought along the way as well as a few boss fights including of course Hades him self. You can't talk about side content without talking about Sephiroth. You can beat the game, credits will roll, Sephiroth will still kill you. Or for giggles you can attempt a speed run (for me my best time is around 5 hours) Kingdom hearts was also the first game that was purely just mine, after having to share with my siblings no one but me in the house was all that interested in saving my friends and returning back home to Destiny islands. This is game that scratches that nostalgia itch, and is just a genuinely fun game

7. Wind Waker
Link to the past was my first Zelda game, but Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda game. Wind Waker, how do i love thee, let me count the ways
The open world was vast with so much to see and explore, this is a point of contention as there are those out there who don't like the great sea. And those people are wrong. The great sea offers such a great sense of exploration. Feed the fish to learn about each island (49 of em) take on each enemy outpost you encounter, hunt for treasure, fight sea monsters, explore ghost ships, or simply watch a storm roll in. While Zelda stories are never very deep, i quite like this one. (slight spoilers for a 20 year old game) you discover what happens to Hyrule when it's hero fails to rise, for a cartoony game its story is fairly dark. And of course the game looks fantastic, even going back to play the original gamecube release it still looks very good. Some complain that this is one of the easier Zelda games, but that criticism goes out when you consider Breath of the wild is the easiest Zelda game and that's the one everyone says is perfect. Zelda games aren't meant to be dark souls, and i really do love just sailing around.

6. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)
A.K.A the official Nostalgia representative. The Sega Genesis was the first console i ever played, games like Eternal Champions, Phantom 2040, X-Men, Alex Kid in the enchanted castle, while i do have a soft for these games and many others that kicked off my interest in gaming, not many hold up exceptionally well today, that is of course expect for Sonic on Genesis (I'm cheating here a bit and including the three main line sonic games on the genesis ) These games represented the best that the Genesis had of offer and are still a blast to play to this day. Who wants to play as a slow Italian plumber when you can play as a cool blue hedgehog with attitude. Just try and put your controller down, he will tap his foot impatiently. It was the 90s, and being cool was so cool. Speed? Oh speed was the coolest. Race through the levels with master reaction time jumping over enemies and obstacles to race to the finish. 30 years later, and these games still hold up exceptionally well

5. Red Dead Redemption 2
I wanna be a cowboy baaaaby
There is no such thing as a perfect game, but RDR2 is pretty close. The Story is this game is one of my favorites. Following a gang in the dying days of the wild west, it has some twists. It has some turns. And in the end, it had an emotional and satisfying conclusion. RDR 2 excels at what any sandbox strives for, an amazing world to explore. As fantastic as the story is, the world has so much to see and do and explore. Stranger missions (side missions) scatter the world from becoming hunting friends with a war vet to gathering dangerous and exotic animals that have escaped from the traveling circus. Like searching for creepy Easter eggs? Because great, you can explore a haunted swamp, find a woman imprisoned by her own family, and follow the clues leading to the lair of a serial killer. With over 200 animals living in the world of RDR 2, it really does feel alive. The world is diverse and never a bore to travel through, in part thanks to the fact RDR2 is one of the most graphically impressive games I've ever played.

4. Animal Crossing New Leaf
I bought a 3ds just for this game, i went to Gamestop the morning the game released and bought a Red 3Ds XL along a copy of Animal Crossing New Leaf. I won't get into New Horizons here, but New Leaf is still by far the series has offered. New Leaf was peak Animal crossing, it took the game several steps forward while still staying true to the Animal Crossing formula. You move to a village and become the new mayor, which allows you freedom over your town like never before. With public work projects you could decorate your town, as mayor you could set ordinances so villagers either stay up late with your, or maybe they wake up early with you. The music is arguably the best Animal Crossing has given us. Fortune cookies allowed you to decorate your home with items from Zelda, Mario, Pikmin, Starfox, etc. Forge friendships with your neighbors, try to force the ugly ones out, actually upgrade your shop all the way. Maybe the best part, no incredibly long tutorial. The game just, starts. It's easy for anyone from any age to get into New Leaf.

3. Hit and Run
You ever wanna play gta but your mom wont let you? Just play The Simpsons Hit and Run, its sorta the same game. Hit and Run has a fair amount of flaws, like the fact you essentially repeat the same 4 or 5 missions over and over again. Race that car, follow that car, destroy that car, collect stuff the car drops (worst of these missions) However, i am a Simpsons fan and also it's a game from my youth, it was always going to make it on this list. (I see you Road Rage, get outta here) Even though the missions aren't the most thrilling, the game it self is still a lot of fun to mess around in it. Springfield is honestly pretty faithfully re-created, outside the standard missions there are plenty of extra goodies (level gags, collector cards, bonus cars to unlock, costumes such as cool Lisa, Bartman, Donut head homer and officer Marge) driving around feels good and doesn't take long before you start discovering shortcuts in each level, allowing you to absolutely smoke the computer players. For all these reasons Hit and Run is a game I'll consistently go back to and play

2. Pokemon Red and Blue
Is Red and Blue the best Pokemon games? Nah. Are the the only ones I'm nostalgic for? Nah. As much as i love Gen 2 Pokemon games Gold and Silver, i just can't justify having them over Red and Blue. These are the games that got me into Pokemon, i was the Pokemon generation and these games are so important to my childhood i just couldn't leave them off. I was on the playground when kids went "Hey you know you can catch a mew by moving that truck" It pained me that it was never true and Justin's dad did not in fact work at Nintendo. Red and Blue have not held up as well as many other games on this list, and even when the complaint for newer games are "Well this is nothing new" They still add onto and improve upon the original formula, however Nostalgia is an incredibly powerful force and this game like few others has the ability to make me feel 5 again.

Super Smash bros ultimate
Each new Smash bros game instantly becomes the new best Smash game (sorry, Melee fans) at least that's the case for the general public. Each new game updates and adds onto the previous game, Smash ultimate is a rare beast in that whatever comes after it, can't possibly top it. The next smash game will more than likely be a great game, much like all old smash bro games are, but the next smash won't be able to say "Everyone is here!" The amount of characters and stages really does feel like a once in a lifetime thing. You'll never be able to say "Let's play a round of smash, you'll be Pichu, you can be Snake, you can be Ken, and I'll be Sora" Ever again. Smash ultimate is a game i have fairly regularly gone back to play since it's release in December 2018. As of writing this now i have played Smash Ultimate for 535 hours, that's 22 days of my life spent playing this game, and i have no regrets. I'll boot it up only expecting to play a few minutes but then I'll start playing as one of 80 some characters i haven't give much attention to. Figuring their move set out, figuring out whether or not i want to make them a main or not. Each character feels unique, but the controls are simple enough you never feel overwhelmed stepping out of your comfort zone and maybe trying out a little mac if you're used to playing as a Mega Man. Sakuria and his team created one of the greatest fighting games of all time, a game that will be re-visited years after it's own release.

Weekend Top Ten #530
Top Ten Disney Villain Songs
There are two things that seem synonymous with modern Disney: villains and songs. These two elements go back right to the very start: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs features, right out of the gate, an all-timer of a villain in the spooky and seriously sinister Wicked Queen. And songs? Only “Heigh-Ho”, for cryin’ out loud! Sure, the soundtrack is a bit twee nowadays, but what do want? It’s nearly a century old.
So yeah, Disney is known for good tunes and bad eggs. Throughout the decades, we’ve had the likes of Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Shere Khan… truly hissable bad guys, all-timers of villainy. And there have been songs-a-plenty: “When You Wish Upon a Star”, “The Bear Necessities”, “He’s a Tramp”… absolute belters all. But mushing them together? Smooching them up all close? That’s where the magic happens, baby.
Nowadays it’s totally common for the villain in the Disney movie to have A Song. Their Song. The Disney Villain Song. But it was not always thus! I mean, for a start, whilst Disney films have been commonly musical, you could argue that they didn’t really become musicals – that is, heavily influenced by Broadway, with showtune-style productions – until the involvement of the likes of Howard Ashman in the late eighties. And most of the classic villains don’t sing at all – was there a signature song sung by a bad guy before, oooh, Madam Mim in The Sword and the Stone? And even then, it’s not really a belter, not by contemporary standards.
No, in the eighty-odd years since the first Disney feature-length animation, I’d say we’ve only had a proper Disney villain song for the past thirty or so. A real humdinger, a belter, a rollicking showtune. Balls-out, fantabulous, camp; these are the hallmarks of a great Disney Villain Song, and I’d say they’re relatively recent. Looking down my list, it’s clear that the Disney Renaissance has a lot to answer for here, although a couple of the 21st century’s biggies do get a shout in too. I feel like it’s the Renaissance that’s really the high-water-mark of Disney Villainy; not just the songs, but the characters in general. Whilst the last few films (Frozen II, Moana, Encanto, etc) have been pretty good at analysing and veering away from traditional “Disney Princess” tropes, one of the downsides has been the lack of a really good bad guy for a while now. When was the last proper Disney villain? Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Zootopia all have “bad guys”, true, but for absolute moustache-twirling, scenery-chewing malevolent dickheadery I think we need to go all the way back to Tangled – which, if I’ve done my sums right, is also the last time the villain had a song.
What I’m saying is I want an unrepentant space bastard to camp their way through the cosmos singing a balls-out showtune in Strange Worlds this Christmas.
Anyway, that’s about it. here are my ten favourite songs sung by the baddies in Disney animations. Obviously I’m talking about “proper”, “official” Disney animations, which means no straight-to-video spin-offs and no Pixar (otherwise there are a couple of decent villain songs in the Aladdin sequels that might be worth your time). And whilst I’m willing to open this category up to “any song sung by a villain”, I think really what we’re looking at here are the calling card numbers; the songs where a villain really stakes out their villainy, their modus operandi, their master plan or motive. Those are the songs that really bubble to the top for me.
Now, there is one song that I did consider, and it may be worth mentioning in dispatches: “Let It Go”. That could be a villain song; certainly, for most of the running time Elsa is the antagonist of that film, even if ultimately it’s Hans who’s the bad guy. And it ticks all the boxes: big brassy number that sets out the stall of the character. It’s not an “I Want” song, it’s not the sort of song that a hero usually gets; it’s basically Elsa coming into her own and telling the world to get out of her way. Seeing as she’s freezing the kingdom to death at the time, it’d be easy to class it as a villain song. However, given that Elsa is definitely not a villain, and is even the hero of Frozen II (by which I mean she’s the principal protagonist), I decided that no, “Let It Go” is not actually a villain song; but your mileage may vary.
Where was I? Oh yeah, the list.
Tumblr media
Poor Unfortunate Souls (Ursula, The Little Mermaid, 1989): the film that kicked off the Disney Renaissance also has its definitive Villain Song: Pat Carroll as Ursula hamming it up something fierce, painting herself as a misunderstood saint, in a bold, brassy, and frankly bawdy number. Really big, oodles of camp charm, and sung by an absolute diva. Divine.
Mother Knows Best (Mother Gothel, Tangled, 2010): in a film full of underrated songs, Donna Murphy as a vain, passive-aggressive, gaslighting mum turns in a delightfully Broadway song about the dangers of the outside world. Featuring incredible changes of tone and voice, it’s another big number by another full-tilt diva.
Be Prepared (Scar, The Lion King, 1994): much less of a showstopping tour-de-force, Jeremy Irons gives us a sinister drawl as he outlines in almost Shakespearean terms his plans of sedition. The slowly rising temp, the diabolical imagery, the almost fascistic chorus of marching hyenas, all adds up to a delightfully dark ode to murder and betrayal.
Shiny (Tamatoa, Moana, 2016): our first secondary villain, Jermaine Clement plays Tamatoa as “what if Bowie but crab?”. It’s a perfect portrayal, all spaced-out jazzy distorted vowels as a big-ass crab attempts to devour our heroes. Terrific wordplay too, in a much funnier number than we’ve had so far.
Gaston (Gaston and Lefou, Beauty and the Beast, 1991): ah, a duet! This ode to toxic masculinity begins as Jesse Corti’s Lefou – the Hammond to Gaston’s Clarkson – bigs up his sullen mate. But once Gaston himself (Jerry Orbach) chimes in, it’s an explosive egotistical romp as Disney’s biggest dickhead (seriously, he’s roughly the size of a barge) outlines just how brawny and awful he is. Hilariously grim, the fact that the whole town seems in on it is the icing on the dark cake.
The World's Greatest Criminal Mind (Ratigan, The Great Mouse Detective, 1986): let’s not sleep on the fact that this is a Vincent Price song. The icon of horror essays his rodent Moriarty with typical eloquent relish, praising his previous crimes, his coterie of cronies singing along with him. But then a drunk mouse slips up, things turn super nasty, and we get one of the few genuine on-screen murders in Disney canon. But make no mistake, this song is a camp delight.
Hellfire (Frollo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1996): look, there’s no getting around it: this is a song about a bloke who’s super horny, rubs a woman’s clothing on his face, and ultimately collapses, spent, on the floor at the song’s climax. Tony Jay channels Christopher Lee in a gothic baritone as sings of seduction, visions of dancing Esmerelda cavorting in the fire, as demonic imagery rises up around him. “Is it my fault if in God’s plan he made the Devil so much stronger than a man” is a line in a song in a Disney cartoon.
Friends on the Other Side (Dr. Facilier, The Princess and the Frog, 2009): speaking of demonic imagery, here we have Keith David as the sinister shadow man, bringing in touches of Mardi Gras in a very jazzy song about selling your soul to the devil. He dances like a criminally overlooked Black dancer in a 1930s musical starring less-good white dancers; various tribal masks and voodoo dolls provide the backing track. And, basically, it rules.
The Mob Song (Gaston and the villagers, Beauty and the Beast, 1991): goodness, what’s this?! Two songs from the same film? Yes, Beauty and the Beast is the gift that keeps on giving – no wonder it was the first animated movie nominated for a Best Original Picture Oscar, a decade before they implemented the Best Animated Film category. And here we have a very interesting song, because whilst we already know that Gaston – who is the best, remember, and the rest is all drips – is a capital-V-Villain, I’d argue this song is about the townsfolk as villains. Scared, foolish, selfish villains; a mob. It’s a great song, Gaston whipping them up into a frenzy with lies and exaggerations, all to get his goal – which, basically, is revenge on Belle for spurning him. It’s why I wasn’t keen on the remake trying to soften the villagers; I like it when they’re all awful.
Perfect Isn't Easy (Georgette, Oliver and Company, 1988): this one might be controversial, because it’s arguable that Georgette isn’t really a villain. It’s a bit like the “Let it Go” situation, except not quite so clear-cut, because Georgette is never really redeemed or turned into a hero. But it has all the hallmarks of a Villain Song: brassy showtune, sung in first-person by a vainglorious little shit. And it’s superb; would be loads higher if Georgette was, well, nastier overall. Bette Midler gives a stunning performance, playing to the rafters, switching voices and even doing barks and woofs. This really feels like the beginning of the sort of song that Disney would excel at. We’re not talking Lassie.
Now I have all these songs stuck in my head. And I hope you do too.

ok so im rewatching hercules 1997 rn and here are my very solicited opinions and thoughts in chronological order <3
— the soundtrack is perfect and the film looks amazing, first thing first. i always loved the animation and the character design in it
— yk as a kid i used to love this film and rewatch it like so many times, so rn it really brings that nice childhood joy to me :) especially the young herc portion of it!! he's precious and i love him <3
— phil should be run over by a truck. that's it
— anyway so what the fuck. did they really? add a scene with? what the fuck - refering to the scene with meg and the horse guy. yk what im saying? like jeez. generally i don't think the movie is doing megara any justice. she's cool and she's hot but girl really struggles with the written by a man syndrome imo
— ok thats actually not it yet. phil is disgusting + misogynist + fucking awful + not funny + i want him taxidermied
— i think megara called hades a rat? (omg is that a my headcanons reference??) loved that
— hades is such a babyboy it's not even funny. like when he's so happy about his little plan. my baby
— the ending is so damn rushed and has so many plotholes. like hades' 18 yo plan kinda uh sucks ngl. and so does his spellwork
— top ten saddest disney deaths (points at the scene where hades gets punched and dies. probably) not the most graceful way to go huh
so anyway my verdict is that the movie is alright. its not bad and isn't as misogynistic as i remember but its nothing too amazing. the people working on it clearly loved it and it shows! the show is better tho sorry😵
