What type of podcasts do you listen to
Hi anon who sent this forever ago! I am cleaning out my inbox and finally answering this, sorry.
Right now I'm very into Tooth And Claw which is stories of survival in animal incidents. It can get pretty gruesome, but Wes Larson (one of the three hosts) is a Bear Biologist and is very well educated and teaches very well.
I also love Witches, Magic, Murder and Mystery! Megan and Kara are amazing.
National Park After Dark is good
I'm a huge fan of the McElroys, so My Brother, my brother and me
I also like Legends of The West and You're Dead To Me, they are both well researched history podcasts.

THIS WEEK on the Long Way Round, we’re joined by the incomparable scholar, god tier poster, and doctor who understander, em @lesbianrobin , where we discuss all things lycanthropy, ninjas, dungeons, and why the doctor totally wanted to fuck that guy’s long dead father (you know, the one who built the not-telescope and made the rooms covered in holly, and—y’know just watch the episode)

Cursed as a worthless scavenger and cast as villainous cowardly sidekicks in Disney’s The Lion King, the spotted hyena is one of the world’s most misunderstood of all predators. It may scavenge at night on a giant rubbish tip on the outskirts of Mekelle in Ethiopia, but it earns it’s top predator status when it takes down its prey in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. Adam Hart and guests polish up the spotted hyena’s tarnished reputation.

updates,
I got a new green tea, cranberry nut muffin from Adagio, and it's now one of my top five favorite teas. It's a great way to start my days.
Which have been very long and busy throughout October with trying to keep on top of multiple different projects at work :/ but today's live broadcast went well and I just need to get through tomorrow's.
October was SO expensive. Everything I got (new raincoat, new hair, new insulated coat since it's cold here again, gym leggings) are things I needed that I'll get a lot wear out of over the next few years at least, but ouch.
I've been reading some amazing books lately. I just finished Toxic Parents by Dr. Susan Forward, and Will I Ever Be Good Enough? Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers by Dr. Karyl McBride. These books have been deeply moving and I wish I had found them years earlier. I highly recommend both.
I've also been loving a new podcast, Tooth and Claw: True Stories of Animal Attacks. Animal attacks are something that has fascinated me since I was a kid, and this really scratches that very particular itch to know more. The National Park After Dark podcast, which I also love, goes hand-in-hand with Tooth and Claw.
It's November! This is going to be a busy month for me. I'm taking all my time off work this month rather than December. I haven't had any time off since early June, so I'm excited. I'm going to Washington State (Seattle and Olympic National Park) with @thatisadamnfinecupofcoffee and @annespelledwithane next week. ❤️ and later this month, my friend Laura and I are going to Peru to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. We're getting back the day before my 31st birthday. :)

I enjoyed listening to SHWEP and am checking out Perdido Street Station thanks to your posts. Would you mind sharing some more of your favourite media?
this is kind of a grab bag but here ya go: lord of the rings, the silmarillion, the children of hurin, anything by kazuo ishiguro, anything by haruki murakami, 100 years of solitude, love in the time of cholera, anything by jorge luis borges, terry pratchett's discworld series, neil gaiman's sandman series, njal's saga, egil's saga, the saga of hervor and heidrek, the rediscovery of man by cordwainer smith, anything by raymond chandler, anything by iain banks, the city and the city by china mieville, plus the two sequels to perdido street station, the inverted world by christopher priest, a canticle for liebowitz by walter miller, anything by octavia butler, anything by ursula le guin, anything by jane austen, gawain and the green knight, pearl (the middle english poem, not the steinbeck novel), as i lay dying by william faulkner, anything by kurt vonnegut, rice boy by evan dahm and its follow up vattu (both available in their entirety online), fine structure by qntm (also online), "the man who ate michael rockefeller" by christopher stokes, tooth and claw (the story collection) by t.c. boyle, frankenstein, hyperion by dan simmons and its sequels, house of leaves, waterland, the making of the atomic bomb by richard rhodes, anything by roger zelazny, edgar rice burroughs' barsoom series, ray bradbury's short fiction, dune, hart's hope by orson scott card (and his collected fiction, maps in a mirror), paradise lost, the andrew george translation of the epic of gilgamesh
(books i wouldn't recommend, exactly, but which had a formative effect on my taste include hart's hope by orson scott card, his short fiction omnibus maps in a mirror, dune, paradise lost, and the work of james joyce)
if you like scripted and informative podcasts, i will never stop recommending mike duncan's history of rome or revolutions, both of which are terrific. there's also a history of byzantium podcast that picks up where mike duncan left off with rome that is quite good, though i haven't listened to all of it.

11, 13, and 29 for the fanfiction ask!
11. Do you write scenes in order, or do you jump around?
Typically I write stuff in order! There are exceptions- sometimes I'll write ahead to a scene I'm really hyped about- but the majority of the time it's easier for me to stick to chronological order!
13. Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what have you been listening to recently?
Either music or some other sort of background noise! Lately, however, my background noise has been a new podcast my friend recommended called Tooth & Claw. It's about animal attacks, which I guess is an odd thing to binge, but the hosts are wildlife biologists and animal lovers who also give fun facts and talk about the importance of conservation
(Point is, it's hard for me to write in silence, so I'm usually listening to something)
29. What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?
I like to think I've got pretty solid characterization, and I'm good at conveying different character voices! Character study-type stuff is my favorite thing to write, so I've definitely got some practice there!

Hiii!!! (@pga-books here!) I'm here for the description to see what character would like me thing.
Appearance: I'm heavy set, tall, and have really long red hair.
Hobbies: I like to sit in the quiet and write or listen to music or D&D podcasts. I also play D&D every Thursday with friends and get really into playing my character up. I have a major passion for writing, and eventually want to be a published author one day.
Other: I'm ace, don't have a gender, love spoiling my friends with gifts. I struggle with mental illness but I'm fighting it tooth claw and nail, and trying to remind myself that I'm a human and allowed to have bad days. Sometimes I like my space, but sometimes I need people to be near me and sometimes even squish me.
I'm quiet until I get to know you then if I see you'll accept me for who I am, I get loud and hilarious. Sometimes obnoxious. I love to laugh, and make others laugh. The sooner I can make someone laugh, the sooner I'll feel comfortable around them.
I love animals more than I do people, but the people I do love, I love wholeheartedly.
Send me a description of yourself (hobbies, interests, a couple fun facts) and I’ll tell you which of my characters would fall madly in love with you.
Omg... it has to be Seth! He's from The Notebook of a Fictional Man and he's such a great big softy (6'7 in fact!) who would love someone tall and gentle like him who he could banter with til morning and maybe even afternoon and the next day. In fact, his canon love interest is ALSO a writer who's fist-fighting mental illness, and I've written him with ace love interests in the past. He looks back so fondly on those times and would totally go back too see them if it were possible </3
And he would of course point out all the good dogs for you <3

media list (05.02.2024 - 25.02.2024)
👂 Listened:
Albums:
the record by boygenius (2023) [4/10, I just couldn't vibe with the album's mood or sound at all.]
Starboy by The Weeknd (2016) [6/10, suffers from the singles being so much better than the rest of the album]
Podcasts:
Tooth & Claw: Down Under - News Stories Featuring Some of Australia's Most Dangerous Critters
Welcome To Night Vale Ep. 50-70B [This took up a lot of my podcast time these past few weeks during work hours, but I definitely need a break...]
Morbid: EP 540 - Anna George and the Murder of George Saxton [I really enjoy historical true crime. I wonder if it's the distance? Or maybe, like with everything else, I prefer to consume things where technology is absent.]
National Park After Dark: EP 201 - The Lava Lake Murders. Deschutes National Forest.
📖 Read:
Articles:
Air Canada must honor refund policy invented by airline’s chatbot by Ashley Belanger from arstechnica
Books:
Luck In The Shadows by Lynn Flewelling [finished! 10/10, I'll definitely do a full review at some point.]
Stalking Darkness by Lynn Flewelling [in progress, second part of the series, still early on.]
Pine by Francine Toon [in progress - quite slow going, this one, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I don't usually mind if books are slow-burn, but I find the details that makes things slow so asinine...]
📺 Watched:
YouTube:
The Sinister Letters That Terrorized A Small Town • Mystery Files from Watcher
Why Is It So Hard to Tell the Sex of a Dinosaur? from PBS Eons

If anyone’s looking to branch out into new genres of podcasts I’ve been rly into Tooth & Claw
It’s a wildlife biologist who works w bears at yellow stone and his two friends who are also involved w similar things and they talk about injurious animal encounters
Sometimes that means an “attack” but also not necessarily they talk a lot about ways in which dangerous animal situations are not always “attacks” per se despite their injurious nature
It stays focused on like the science of the animals behavior and is very pro animal and pro animal safety and I’ve learned a lot about bears lol

for the book asks: 3, 4, 11, 12, 16!
3. what were your top 5 books of the year? i feel like i had a kinda solid-to-good reading year where everything is p good but few things really stand out so this list is cheating a lil
1. JJEU (james joyce extended universe): rereads so they shouldn't count BUT by far my favourite reading experience of the whole year was reading ulysses (novel of all time) along with burgess's book on joyce & frank delaney's lovely lovely lovely podcast re:joyce (& a bunch of other stuff). also i'm pivoting from portrait to ulysses but stephen is still my babygirl. i haven't finished finnegans wake yet but we don't talk about that. 2. palliser/parliamentary series, anthony trollope. technically read half of these last year. i don't think this series is as consistent as barsetshire but it's also in some ways more interesting (especially re: women). but like i'm mainly here for silly soapy victorian comfort reading about thee #1 iconic girlboss/malewife couple of all time, lady glencora & planty 'most principled & delicate of men' pal (blorbo from my books) 3. solitud, víctor català. no freedom as wide-reaching & no captivity as total as the catalonian mountains (& being a woman, but that's mainly column b). don't remember this in great detail but remember loving the landscape writing & interiority of main character mila. 4. games without rules: the often interrupted history of afghanistan, tamim ansary. just a really good, compelling history of afghanistan that i enjoyed & learned a lot from. 5. broken earth trilogy, n.k. jemisin. everyone in the SFFsphere already knows this series rocks but yeah it really really does. also it allowed me to be a [redacted] truther & be right which is always fun.
4. did you discover any new authors that you love this year? i've had jo walton on my radar for a while but she literally wrote a book (tooth&claw) that can only be described as 'trollope but everyone's a dragon' bc trollope pissed her off so much. i love trollope obviously but that's valid & it was fun, so i shall read more from her. i also had a lot of fun with t. kingfisher's nettle & bone so i will be reading more from her as well.
11. what was your favourite book that has been out for a while, that you just now read? 'out for a while' is so broad how do i even answer this. the posthumous memoirs of brás cubas by machado de assis has been out long enough to become a newly rediscovered gem several times over and it is genuinely a lot of fun (& much shorter than tristram shandy) so that's one
12. any books that disappointed you? the undercurrents by kirsty bell combines memoir and the history of berlin through one specific building next to landwehrkanal (where the author lived for a while) & there's some interesting stuff in it but also the memoir parts feature a lot of complaining about how her altbau apartment (which she owns) is too big & has bad vibes and leaking pipes bc of historical trauma or whatever & sorry but in this economy???
16. what is the most over-hyped book you read this year? cursed bunny by bora chang (tr. anton hur) is a fine if not especially memorable collection of short stories. it's fine - *single pistol shot*

Back again. It’s been about a year and a half since I’ve come onto here and expressed myself through writing. I definitely am attracted to the idea of writing whatever comes to your mind - spilling your thoughts and emotions onto a page with over a year in between - to be able to compare and contrast your growth and mindset over the span of different times. In the last post I mentioned that I was excited to take a year of life and see what I was able to accomplish with it. I mentioned that I was devoting myself to always being better, always being positive, and always living life with the idea of love and improvement with those around me. I can very humbly and happily say that I believe those goals have been met. The last year has taken us (my girl and I) picked us up, chewed us, swallowed us, shit us out, and made us grow from the dirt into what now is a much more resilient and purpose driven couple. Before, we had our goals, and we had our intentions, but reality was that there wasn’t much direction and actual substance behind our planning. Anyone can make a perfect plan // one of my favorite quotes that I heard on a podcast once was that “most people let their entire lives pass them by while they’re making grand plans for it” //. That quote means a lot to me because I believe that in the first time in my (our) lives we are on a trajectory towards true growth and success. We have lost battles, fought tooth and nail, laughed, cried, screamed, been blessed, been torn apart, and have consistently built onto our frame a stronger and stronger armor that has no flaws anymore. I truly believe her and I can weather any storm as long as we have each other. And through this process, we have developed a love that cannot waiver. A bond that is impenetrable. And understanding of one another that takes countless hours of learning every slight nuance about the other person so that even when they are thinking…. We both know without having to speak. What we have created together is truly remarkable and I am so proud to be on the side of things that we are now. I mentioned last year that she had been carrying me and supporting me through the process of my dreams becoming a reality. That statement is absolute god in my opinion. She has been the catalyst that has allowed me to create the living standard that I am able put her on her own pedestal and let her spread her wings towards the dreams that she has always imagined. The last post was centered around many things, but reading over it was obvious that I was trying and eager to grow. I have now shifted that energy into pouring my effort into helping her grow. I will always be on the Savage/Servant path for my family and my loved ones, don’t ever doubt that. But I am extremely excited to now be in a supportive role and see what she is capable of accomplishing because really in my mind she’s going to become much greater of a human than I ever will be. She’s got something in her that I recognize as one of a kind, there’s something to this girl that forces you to believe in her ability because she is perfect with whatever she does. If she’s involved, it always turns out perfect. So I’ll leave off with this. The last year was probably the hardest fucking challenge either of us have ever gone through. Every road traveled was the hard one. Every lesson learned was from clawing back to baseline from rock bottom. But what it produced was a strong, confident, loyal, supportive and motivated couple ready to finally live out their wildest imaginations. Truly after reading the last post, and me being excited and ready for what was to come a year and a half ago, I can’t hardly imagine what will be happening by the time I post next (if that even is a year because I miss writing). Regardless, the leap to where we are now from where we were when I last wrote is hard to fathom. We are ready for the next step. I have never loved her deeper than I do today. I have never been happier with my life altogether. I have never had a person like this. I am grateful for everything that we are. I LOVE MY LIFE
#.
