I wonder what would happen if Hunter was to somehow meet the young(er) Philip Wittebane without knowing who he is.

Would he at least be a little bit suspicious as he finds "the way he talks" a bit similar (like Lilith did)? Or would he just unknowingly, automatically bow his head into submission?

Raine’s Daughter Now

The witches’ duels in the theater had been a perfectly nice idea for stretching their legs until a gaggle of bard-hopefuls had wandered in off the street, and then Raine nearly found themselves fumbling notes, their face heating. They couldn’t blame Lanissa for going a little overboard after that, clearly sensing her approaching victory. The G4 that threw them from the stage was well-earned, although the crash landing into the seats wasn’t their most comfortable loss ever. It made it hard to take the chromatic lick that followed in the playful spirit they were sure she intended. But the kids laughed over the vibrato of the last note, so they held back their glare as they hauled themselves up.

“Other duties to attend to,” they said quickly, beating a hasty retreat. After the doors swung shut behind them, though, they had a conundrum. They’d already been doing paperwork for hours, and there was likely enough to last them through their whole shift - Scooter was even more eager to delegate his work than usual in the run up to his retirement. Raine grimaced at the thought and headed for their office. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to be the Head. That’s what they’d been working toward for years, after all. But usually they got to be a silent presence behind Scooter if they were needed at all, and now there would be speeches and people and the Day of Unity, which Raine still knew entirely too little about for their liking. They snagged their lunch from their office and left it again immediately without daring to look at their desk and see if the ‘to-do’ pile had grown. From there they headed to the theater’s balcony, largely out of habit, though they wondered as they went whether the duels wrapped up after their departure.

They slipped through the smallest crack in the door they could manage - no need to distract anyone onstage with too much movement. Before they could pick out a seat and take in whatever spectacle was below, however, their eyes met shining brown ones. Both parties froze. Then Raine realized the kid was shaking. Slowly, they set down their lunchbox and got down to their knees, but they found themselves at a loss for what to say.

“Are you going to eat me?” The kid blurted.

“No.” They couldn’t help that it came out as a bit of a question - they’d never thought they looked particularly demonic, but maybe they were wrong. “Did someone say I would?” That would be an inconvenient rumor to quash before they took over as Head.

“Um, no. There was -” The kid took a deep breath and wiped at her eyes. “I think it was a fairy? It wanted my skin.”

“I’m not interested in your skin,” Raine promised, switching to sitting cross-legged before their knees could get particularly unhappy. “My name’s Raine,” they tried.

“Um. I’m Luz.” She held out her hand, seemingly on automatic, but Raine stretched to shake it when she didn’t take it back.

“What brings you to the Bard Headquarters, Luz?”

“Bard Headquarters?” She echoed. Raine was definitely concerned, now. Had someone gotten her with some kind of potion? Damaged a developed memory? “I don’t know. I was just running. There was a lot of teeth and - and tongues, and eating, and that weird lady tried to grab me, so. I ran.”

“Weird lady?” Were they going to have to drag a few Scouts into this?

“Her owl stole my garbage...”

Raine’s stomach dropped. She was still talking, waving around a book, but they didn’t catch a word, their eyes instead going to her ears. Sure enough, they were rounded.

“This is going to take some explanation...” They murmured. Luz glanced at them, trailing off. “You’re a human, right?”

“Um. Yeah.” It was her turn for a statement to sound like a question.

“Well. Welcome to the Boiling Isles, Luz the human. You came through a door that the Owl Lady had, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Alright.” Raine spared a longing glance to their lunchbox. “I guess I know where we’re going.” They picked themselves up again, smoothing their outfit.

“What, we’re going to her?” Luz hissed.

“If it helps, I doubt she was interested in your skin, either. More your wallet.” Despite the dread that was filling them at the idea of walking through the market, there was a smile stretching across their face. They hadn’t meant to go so long without seeing Eda once they’d both had a little room to breathe, so they were delighted to have an excuse. “Come on. If she insists, I’ll buy something, and we’ll get you home.”

“Okay.” Luz picked herself up, fussing with her messenger bag. Raine led her back down to the lobby and out into the streets.

Okay, but imagine Hunter (TOH) sputtering out an excuse like this when you catch him spying on you. He trains himself to identify your voice over the din and leaps from his hiding place behind the gaudiest kiosk in the Night Market.

Depending on whether this is pre-Hollow Mind, Hunter might throw up a rambling explanation for how Emperor Belos assigned him to a reconnaissance mission.

"You're a person of interest." He keeps his golden mask securely fastened to his face, hoping that its show-nothing design will render you oblivious to the profuse sweat now dripping down his uniform.

A pang of fear stabs Hunter in the gut as he hears his own words and struggles to rip the wobble out of his voice. "To Emperor Belos, I mean!" The slight crack and fluctuation of intonation, embedded deeper in his memory than anywhere else, fills him with a cold awareness of the smallest things.

Hunter stops his arm before it satisfies an itch under the hem of his glove. The leather, once a gleaming sign of prestige, now traps his wrist and palm in a clammy prison.

He looks away, as if anyone else in this world could seize his attention more, and reaches out to wave his hand up and down a few times. "So, resume your daily activities, citizen." Hunter leans against the side of the kiosk, props one heel over the other, and crosses his arms in an attempt to appear suave.

"I'll ... I'll be here."

As you scout another stall for cheap contraband, Hunter lays his full weight on the kiosk and accidentally pushes it into a steep bend in the road. He saves himself with a stumble and looks from you to the fleeing kiosk, then sprints after it, cloak flaring, yelling at the kiosk to "give me a break!"

Wheels snap and pots shatter in a crash that summons from the night an immediate uproar.

So there’s a good chance that this background from a TOH employee’s portfolio isn’t a spoiler for our next two episodes, but rather a cancelled concept. Look at the wing on the left; It’s incomplete.

In the ending for Young Blood, Old Souls this wing is also incomplete. Yet by the events of Eclipse Lake, both wings are fully constructed;

Hollow Mind shows this again in a flashback that takes place right after Eclipse Lake, so it’s not an animation error either;

It’s likely this background was meant to be the original cliffhanger for YBOS, but the construct in the middle was changed to a repaired Portal. If I had to guess, the writers felt the need to emphasize the Portal’s role in Belos’ plan, and also make it clear at the end of S1 that he was fixing it, rather than this revelation occurring in S2 instead; After all this final shot of S1 is how we found out, in an ending twist, that Luz had only slowed Belos’ plans in destroying the Portal, as he could repair it. With how both backgrounds are otherwise basically identical, I’m feeling confident about this just being an alternate take.

(I also have to wonder if Belos was originally going to make a new portal from scratch by the end of Season 2, but due to Season 3 being downsized, the writers opted to have Belos salvage the pre-existing Portal so he and the show wouldn’t have to spend extra time on this, hence the last-minute change.)

anyways I suppose there's a slim possibility I'll eat shit about this later, but I really don't think they're gonna give Hunter "innate" magic now. my main pieces of evidence being:

Hunting Palismen and Hollow Mind both built up the concept of him using glyphs when he doesn't have a staff available, and

the TOH crew has written disabled characters better than that in literally all previous episodes.

I could also see/would also accept "he has a little bit of magic now but it's weak, and he still relies mainly on glyphs in a way that characterizes him as unambiguously still disabled" but the point is that one way or another, I really doubt that Hunter getting big sad brown eyes now (which I do love tbh) is going to override all the themes about disability that this show has been building up for years.

I do understand the fear, because I had a visceral reaction to it at first too, but after taking some time to think about it... I remember the pre-Knocking On Hooty's Door era, where big chunks of the fandom were convinced and/or afraid the show would go back on its themes and cure Eda's curse in that episode, only for those fears to be totally unfounded, so I'm trying not to worry too much

ToH Dark AU: "Et tu, Luz?"

In this timeline(Pre-Hollow Mind), Kikimora convinced Luz and Amity to join a 'temporary alliance' against Hunter. However, by the term 'stop him' Kikimora meant to kill him, which she predicted Luz wouldn't do it intentionally. Instead, she poisoned Luz's 'paralyzer darts', which destroyed his nervous system while letting him feel all the pain and senses during the hours of his demise.

Unfortunately, the operation was successful. As Kikimora promised, she will turn a blind eye to their 'crimes' until the Day of Unity. Luz shall have Hunter's last word echoed in her mind.

tbh im actually not the best at character designs,, my stars below!hag designs were very much inspired by pre-existing design concepts. lily/darius' designs were just aspects taken from the former's many design explorations, same with eda and her concepts. raine's design is just a modification of their outfit from hollow mind. definitely not the most creative,, but they look decent n thats all that matters :)

Huntllow Thoughts

OK. So. First off, Huntllow would be the absolute 👌 👌👌 ship ever if it weren't for a few key details.

Most of the toh Fandom seem to think that Hunter would start developing a crush on Willow first, and while in Normal Socially Adjusted Teen Circumstances I think that would be true, Hunter, as being isolated his whole life in the EC from any and all child or teenage interaction, raised and basically conditioned and brainwashed off of EC propaganda since before he could walk - not to mention the physical, emotional, and psychological abuse that he went through at the hands of Belos, put in the position of EC Head at sixteen, expected and treated at once as a child and an adult...

Well, that's not going to lead to a lot of emotional awareness, about himself or others. Or a lot of healthy understanding about how to live and... well, interact, outside of an EC setting. Take the EE "friends backstab eachother all the time" incident. If Hunter pre-Hollow Mind had thought anything about romance, he had most likely dismissed it as unimportant. He had more crucial matters to attend to, after all. *fanatically loyal* *cough cough* *fanatically loyal* *cough cough*

I doubt he'd change his mind just like that. That's not how healing works. Learning to think differently about things isn't easy, and it's much harder when you've been abused.

Willow, however...

"Hey, Luz? Willow's face keeps getting all red. Is she sick?"

Luz cleared her throat, trying not to laugh at Hunter's genuinely confused-yet-concerned expression. She put on her now-automatic beaming smile, which was only a little fake. Really! "Willow's fine, Hunter. Just, uh. Going through some stuff. You know, the birds and the bees."

Hunter looked thoughtful. "I have a bird and she has a bee. If I send Flapjack over to her, will that help?"

Flapjack looked up from where he was currently mauling her mamí's furniture with his beak, registered their words, and promptly flew out the window to escape the conversation.

Luz found she was laughing. Then she found she couldn't stop.'

Edit: I agree with everything y'all are calling me out for. I have a bit of a habit of typing things w/o thinking of the context of how itll sound? Tbh I was more thinking of past irl personal problems of a friend plus writing ethics and it made me tag stuff that felt relevant at the time but rly wasnt.

I’m looking through my Hunter TOH playlist and I guess at some point I added the birch trees song from the “St. Olga of Kiev” episode of Puppet History onto said playlist. And judging by the songs added around the same time, I’m 90% it was pre-Hollow Mind, definitely Pre-time travel episode.

Where’s that “innocent tumblr users trying to be funny vs the god of Apollo giving them the gift of prophecy” meme when you need it because DAMN I don’t even know why I put that song on there but Y’know what. I was onto something.
