Do you really want people to know you?
Yes actually. Like as of this year I've slowly come to the realisation that I *actively* and genuinely Hate people who don't see me for who I am but rather a projected, idealised or demonised version. Strangely enough, I've felt it most strongly when people really put me in a pedestal, I guess it's a type of dehumanisation I can't really take and it pisses me off, don't have much patience for people I don't like and I think that's perfectly reasonable

'Jehnny Beth took to her Instagram page to share her thoughts on the similarities between Murphy's character in Oppenheimer, and the track that they collaborated on in 2020.
Beth released her debut solo album, To Love Is To Live, shortly after the world went into lockdown as a result of the global pandemic. Halfway through the album, things take a sombre and unexpected turn, with the voice of Cillian Murphy speaking over an ambient synth track – "A Place Above" – which grows in intensity as it draws to a close.
Following the release of the highly anticipated Christopher Nolan film, Oppenheimer, Beth has reflected on what it was like working with Murphy, and also noted some similarities between the tone of both works of art.
"Seeing Oppenheimer last week I was compelled with the similarities between this text and his character in the movie. In this video I have edited them both together for fun and it’s quite incredible how they relate," she says.
"I think Cillian has one of the best voices in modern cinema. I remember he wrote to me when I sent him the text: ‘It's big stuff. It should be done in a slow way, a quiet way.' He made it personal, as if hearing someone's darkest and unfiltered thoughts."
Beth goes on to explain that she had the 1987 film Wings of Desire by German director Wim Wenders in mind when she wrote the text to go along with "A Place Above", describing it was a film "in which angels have access to people's secret thoughts. So the initial idea was indeed cinematographic."
Referencing the professionalism of Murphy, and the dedication to him getting into character, she added: "When we met, Cillian was everything you would expect, calm, friendly, very generous. We recorded three takes. For the last one, we played him the music through headphones. That’s the one we kept, one shot, no edits. Goosebumps."
When BEST FIT interviewed Beth about her album, To Love Is To Live, we kept being drawn back to the thought process of, 'I am human and I am accepting all of my faults'. With Beth's comparison of Murphy's performance on the album akin to his performance in Oppenheimer, the sentiment now also takes on new meaning in relation to the famous quote: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds".'

It is not and never will be a weakness to be kind to others and to yourself, and to have hope that things can get better. You are more than your pain, doubt, and mistakes. Your strength comes from balancing and overcoming it all, and choosing to love while we live.

[image id: a four-page comic. it is titled "immortality” after the poem by clare harner (more popularly known as “do not stand at my grave and weep”). the first page shows paleontologists digging up fossils at a dig. it reads, “do not stand at my grave and weep. i am not there. i do not sleep.” page two features several prehistoric creatures living in the wild. not featured but notable, each have modern descendants: horses, cetaceans, horsetail plants, and crocodilians. it reads, “i am a thousand winds that blow. i am the diamond glints on snow. i am the sunlight on ripened grain. i am the gentle autumn rain.” the third page shows archaeopteryx in the treetops and the skies, then a modern museum-goer reading the placard on a fossil display. it reads, “when you awaken in the morning’s hush, i am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. i am the soft stars that shine at night. do not stand at my grave and cry.” the fourth page shows a chicken in a field. it reads, “i am not there. i did not die” / end id]
a comic i made in about 15 hours for my school’s comic anthology. the theme was “evolution”

Reminder that the US bombed Iraq a day ago. Reminder that this attack has killed 16 Iraqis, many of whom were civilians. Reminder that Iraq has already suffered enough at the hands of US imperialism, that to this day it’s recovering from the aftermath of being defamed to the world as terrorists, from its cities being destroyed under the guise of “exterminating ISIS” (an echo of Israel decimating Palestine to “exterminate Hamas,” interesting), that the US has so many ulterior motives to continue encroaching upon Iraq that have nothing to do with their seemingly noble rationale, and that it does all this while funding Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestinians (which are basically doing their dirty work of pushing further in on Arab territory). It’s jarring that this is all happening on a world stage & yet nothing is being done to stop it. Hands off Iraq. Free Palestine. Hands off Iraq. Free Palestine.

So usually when an imaginary friend is a real thing in a story, it’s either a demon or a ghost or some supernatural boogeyman that probably wants to eat the kid they’ve befriended (Mama, a couple of the Paranormal Activity movies), or “imaginary friends” are just treated as a real thing in the setting, and if a child just thinks hard enough they can manifest a friend into existence (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Happy).
And somewhere in the middle is an area where the imaginary friend in question is real and they are supernatural, but they aren’t malevolent, and they aren’t entirely honest about what they are. Like maybe they’re a fairy or a god or some kind of boggle from mythology, but they just got caught by a six year old and they don’t have time to get into it, so they just go “…Yes. I’m your imaginary friend. We haven’t met. How do you do.” And then they stick around because they do love this kid, and if you’re a boggle from mythology in the modern day good food is really hard to come by.
And at some level. That’s what I think Hobbes is.

One of my favourite mundane weirdnesses about Edinburgh is that we set the big clock visible approaching the station to be 3 minutes fast to make sure people are on time for their trains. My Favourite mundane weirdness of Edinburgh is that we check this by firing a cannon.
