WAY MORE NOTES
More fanart is definitely coming soon.
<- previous notes next notes ->
Handwriting translated below:
#81 childhood neurodivergent trauma. I like Georgie already. … I… didn’t like this episode very much. It reminds me too much of myself…
#82 Elias has the eye powers
#83 “The Stranger.” Circus and delivery service seem to theme. But, how?
#84 Martin is filling in for Jon, old “graveyard”, Melanie is archival assistant?
#85 “The Spiral”, someone isn’t not existing, Georgie is going on a date.
#86 The blanket never did anything, Jon spills some tea.
#87 Sebastian was so oblivious that Megan had to invite him back to notice something was up. [what an icon] Also, mentions of the lightless flame, the stranger, and some weird ritual. Jude Perry even needed to show up!
#88 The calliope is GONE. DIG. Martin really got into that statement and I do not trust Daisy one bit.
#89 Perry is The Desolation and Jon’s hand is TOTALLY singed off
#90 Jared is a bodybuilder and a butcher? He’s the Barbie of TMA. Also, strong women.
#91 Just as quick as he came, Michael Crew, [avatar of?] The Vast, is dead. Daisy is strangling Jon and we learn he can make people speak. AAAA NOT HIS THROAT!
#92 Elias confesses to killing Gertrude and Jurgen, Basira now works at the institute, “Hunt” is associated with Daisy, Jon is so mentally and physically unwell, and more details about the avatars.
#93 Admiral, delivery service, Georgie learns the truth, “Jonathan Sims, are you trying to save the world?”
#94 Georgie talks about her own experiences with death
#95 Martin reads statement regarding 2nd World War. He cares for Jon… a lot…
#96 Breekon and Hope backstory, and Daisy/Jon interview Sarah Baldwin
#97 “ELIAS, WHAT IS MY METAPHORICAL PIT?!” Also, Nikola Orsinov is that stranger chic.
#98 Maxwell, sandman, and Mel is new to poisoning people.
#99 The buried, Michael used to work for Gertrude, Jon is moving out and he got kidnapped— HOW MANY TIMES IS HE GONNA GET HURT?! (HIS LAST NAME IS SHELLEY?! 🥺)
#100 This is so hard to listen to. This literally hurts my brain.
#101 Michael. He… IT shares its statement. Gertrude created Michael. It got sucked through its own door, making way for… Helen Richardson. “He trusted her.” (I feel I am being too tame. MICHAEL IS DEAD?!)
#102 Jon + Mel planning to kill Elias right in front of him, Jon spoke French, more bugs.
#103 Demon pig
#104 If Tim dies… oh, he’s so hurt…
#105 Jon goes to china, The End mentioned, he is rather oblivious.
#106 The space and vast, also Melanie + Basira are shipping Martin and Jon. Stoppp! Also, Elias is pure evil. Jon is also ace.
#107 Jon travels the world, meets murderer’s daughter and vampire hunter! Power trio!
#108 “The world’s a stage…” + PETER LUKAS, MY BOY
#109 More of the trio and how they met. Mustermann just needs some quiet lol
#110 creepy spider movie director. Martin finds a way to distract Elias. ALEXIA. YOU GO!
#111 GERRY! NO! Also, there’s 14 fears. This episode is legit one of the most important.
#112 Friends take turns killing one another, and Barisa + Daisy are… friendly
#113 Gertrude knew Adelard, The End avatar, and Martin needs to keep his hands to himself! “TURN IT OFF!” 😰
#114 Hill Top Road cleaner, and we are off to blow a place up! :D
#115 yo. It’s the antique guy. Also, Helen is nothing like Michael… she’s… pure, somehow?
#116 This was the most confusing thing I’ve ever heard. I’m killing Leitner again if Tim dies.
#117 They all give their statements before The Unknowing. Tim… oh, Martin is so gay and Gerard is gone…
#118 I actually cried. Martin, you sweet boy, you don’t deserve this— WHAT IS HAPPENING!? NAH! NOPE!
#119 16 MINUTES OF PURE CONFUSION. I CAN’T EVEN START IMAGINING A SETTING! Kaboom.
#120 Tim is… dead. Lukas is in charge and Jon is in the hospital. (I need to lie down)

ok you have a special interest in tma (im pretty sure) and i do not want to relisten to the whole fucking series SO can you give me liek a summary (however detailed you want) of what i need to know beofre tmp please and thank you
what gave you that impression whaaat???
ok but i love this question bc i can procrastinate on my hw without catastrophizing yippee!!
i'll do like a timeline of main events without dates bc i cannot actually remember numbers for shit
Jonathon Sims becomes Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute (im going to stop with capitals bc it is too much work) because his predecessor, gertrude robinson, died. he's extremely skeptical of anything "paranormal" so it's kinda funny in the beginning bc his whole job is recording statements people have given of their encounters/experiences. Every episode at this point ends with a, "well, it could be dismissed except for this one spooky detail."
at some point a delivery made by breakon and hope (a delivery company that shows up in statements; two guys with suspicious cockney accents) to jon. it's a table with a hole in the center (also has shown up in statements multiple times). because of its association to, like, bad things, jon takes an axe to the thing and it is left in artifacts storage.
the events of season one are basically worm lady named jane prentiss is stalking the institute in order to take it over. she traps martin blackwood, the poor sweet boy, in his apartment for a week. now he cant stand the sight or taste of canned peaches! he moves into the archives temporarily because of this. jon finds him annoying/a nuisance but is very quick to offer the archives as a place for him to stay (spoilers they kiss). sasha james, another employee, meets an entity who calls itself Michael (an icon) who takes her to see a guy from a statement where his one night stand explodes into worms bc she had an encounter with jane prentiss. he is now a worm person. michael gets a worm from sasha's arm that tried to get into her arm w his finger which is Too Long and Too Sharp. The season ends with prentiss invading the archives and being burned to death! tim stoker (another employee, promise that's mostly all of them), martin, and jon are all Traumatized and end up covered in scars from getting worms out of each other with a corkscrew :) sasha and elias bouchard (everyone's boss) attempt to get out, but sasha is separated and ends up in artifacts storage. someone else is there and then the tape cuts out (everything is being recorded on tapes because something funky happens when certain statements come in contact with digital technology). the tape goes missing.
season two is jon's Paranoia Era. he's not sure who he can really trust anymore, since if jane was out there, there must be others and they could even be his own staff (how did she get in?? what are the underground tunnels beneath the archives??). at the end of each statement there is now a "supplemental" in which he describes his suspicions (which leads to him following some of his employees to their homes and they find out and... are not very pleased) and his findings in explorations of these strange tunnels that seem to move by themselves. there is someone down there, but who could it be?
oh btw another reoccurring thing are spooky books with the name "jurgen leitner" in them
the last two statements before Shit Goes Down are both about someone who's relative changes appearance, sound, and personality, except that no one thinks that this has happened and even pictures would suggest they had always looked like that (except polaroids and tapes). jon finds sasha's "missing" tape and listens to it. and... she sounds different in this recording. uh oh!! she isn't who she says she is!! she attacks him, he ends up running around in the archives (perhaps because of michael, who has a multidimensional door that enters into a spiral of confusing hallways) and meets the man himself, jurgen leitner (who, it turns out, has been the one living in the archives). they trap the Not-Sasha in the tunnels because leitner has a book that, if he reads certain sections, can move the walls/stairs/entryways/etc. jon Obviously has questions, so they go into his office and he keeps interrupting leitner (obviously). what he is able to tell jon is basically:
he found some spooky books and decided that he could collect them all. he built a library and put his name in all the books he owned, but one day it was too much and basically the whole thing burned down, all his assistants died, and the books were yet again scattered to the winds. he explains that he believes these books, entities, and items are all part of powerful beings. he also tells jon that elias killed gertrude. jon freaks out and decides to take up smoking again in that moment, so leitner is left alone. and elias goes in there and kills him with a lead pipe. jon comes back and is like wtf. he's pinned as the murderer bc all his coworkers were suspicious of his behaviors.
so now jon is on the run. he hides in his ex-girlfriend's apartment. he decides to do field research into something gertrude seemed to be interested called The Unknowing. we also learn that he encountered a leitner book as a child which led him to witness his school bully being taken by a spider behind a door (this is an animatic of said book teehee). also that georgie (the ex) also had an encounter separate from him which resulted in her losing all ability to feel fear. jon's field research leads him to find various entities from the statements and is kinda bullied by all of them tbh. hand burned by a woman who's basically made of wax (she likes destroying people's things and fire), simulated vertigo from a guy with a lightning scar down his back, and kidnapped by a clown manequine who wants his skin (as part of the Unknowing)! oh and also almost murdered by a bloodthirsty cop (daisy tonner my beloved plus her gf basira. idr if their relationship was ever established but). he tells daisy that he wasn't the one who killed leitner and that it was elias (i think he has proof?? bc she believes him). they corner him but hes like lol no u cant kill me if you kill me you all die rip teehee!!
oh! on his adventures, he ends up in america and learns that the powers are organized into types of fears. there are fourteen of them, jon works for the Eye. jane was the corruption (rot, bugs). the circus is the stranger (fear of the other, unknown, etc).
at this point i think also the clown + her circus have gathered all the materials for this "Unknowing," (a ritual of sorts). the crew (now including daisy and basira) devise a plan to end it while also distracting elias so that he can be arrested. jon makes martin and tim stay behind (as the distraction), but tim refuses bc his brother was killed by a clown (not the same one as the kidnapper) and hes Angry. I think at this point basira and melanie (she made a statement and then got fired from her job as a ghost hunter youtuber) work at the institute also.
they enter the circus Unknowing and martin burns statements to get elias's attention. all the circus people forget who they are so it's hard to blow everything up, but they figure it out enough for tim to detonate. daisy is thrown into a coffin (also a thing that shows up in multiple statements), tim dies in the explosion, and jon is catatonic.
season four! jon wakes up six months later in the hospital and is told that he was entirely dead except for brain activity. martin is distant, elias has been arrested and replaced by peter lukas, a name that has also shown up before. he is part of the lukas family, which is aligned with the lonely (they help fund the institute). jon pulls back up to his place of work and everyone's kinda annoyed and sad bc their friends are dead. melanie is increasingly violent, most likely due to a ghost bullet in her leg from right before she was hired (this is the slaughter, which is war and senseless violence/murder). she hates jon because she is stuck working for the institute forever (you cant leave or you'll like. get increasingly more sickly or something like that). basira spends a lot of time in the institute library. jon realizes that he can Know things randomly now. he also starts needing to read statements in the way that we need food and sometimes kinda is not so great to (random) people when he's especially lacking
oh my turns out there is a word limit to these things!! whoopsie doo there is more so get ready ig

I finally got caught up on The Magnus Protocol and I have some thoughts
Long post and spoilers ahoy!
Overall, I'm enjoying it, though I don't think it caught my attention the way the first eps of TMA did. I think that's due to the robotic voices giving the statements; I know they're meant to lack emotion as speech-to-text, but I do miss the more storytelling-type of way the statements were read in TMA.
Character-wise, I like all of the main crew. I think my favorite is Colin. And with Gwen's last name being Bouchard, I hope she's related to TMA OG!Elias, or the Elias of this universe who's hopefully also just a lil stoner dude.
The statements are interesting, though I find them less scary than TMA (probably due to the delivery). I think they'll get more involved and spooky though, especially due to all of the connections to TMA that are popping up.
Poor Sam has already committed the cardinal sin of curiosity/wanting to know more.
Celia has to be the Celia from TMA who was part of Georgie and Melanie's cult in season 5. The way she mentioned tape recorders, being buried alive, meat, etc. makes me think she's from the original universe. Plus she thought she recognized "Chester's" voice. And that same episode where she says that, Hilltop was mentioned, which is very sus.
I lost my shit when Gerry appeared (he's still goth and I will die on that hill), alongside GG/Grandma Gertrude. He sounded so happy, which on on hand made me happy (because that poor boy deserves it), but also makes me concerned that Jonny "I can't wait to kill again" Sims has something devious planned, like killing him off on-screen this time or something about the fact that he seemed almost too happy.
Georgie was mentioned so I hope we see her and Melanie and Basira! This also makes me wonder if we'll see Tim and Sasha in this universe too and I hope we do. Also if Michael Shelley (non-spaghetti boy version) appears, the writers will probably be able to hear me screaming all the way at the RQ offices in the UK.
(This is how Doorkeay/GerryMichael can still win.)
As for whether Jon and Martin are trapped in the computers, I'm not sure. I could see that being the case, but I do think it would be interesting if they weren't and there was some other reason why it has their voices (Web reasons?). That said, if it is them in the computers, then "Augustus" is definitely Jonah Magnus.
The email that Sam got from "John/Jon" is what led him to Gerry and Gertrude, right? Is it likely that that was from our beloved Archivist? Yes. But John/Jon is also one of the most common English names, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was someone else entirely. Perhaps even this universe's Jon Sims.
Last thought is that I don't think Smirke's Fourteen applies here. The statements we've gotten so far have all had some similarities (the violin being tied to The Slaughter, the movie being tied to The Eye, etc.) but there are enough differences that I don't think that original categorization will work. And besides, TMA established that the fourteen all overlap anyway, and trying to categorize them by human standards is futile. I saw that theory about the new entities being "desires" rather than "fears", but I'm not sure I buy that yet.

MAG 20 - Listened to while dying my hair. (From now on, I remember exactly what I did while listening for the first time to each episode. As I said in the last one, I took quite a break before then. I listened to this episode on the 31st of July 2021, and for example MAG 15, 16 and 17 on 28th of February - that I still know because I messaged my sister - I started TMA early September 2020.)
"Gospel of Luke, the words were from Genesis: “Behold"" - Ha!
"I just lay there for hours. There seemed a safety in stillness, as though inaction could do no harm." - This could be a way to prevent being marked by all entities, right? Father Burroughs made this decision a second time and therefore denied the End.
"And he began to list them. Every transgression I had made since I was six years old." - The Eye there.
"In the hallway I ran past two other priests, who looked more worried than ever. One of them was Father Singh." - Uhhh, this could be interpreted as the Stranger? But also just another manifestation of the Spiral, leaving him not able to trust his senses.
"The church’s large round window shifted as I watched, as though it were a tremendous eye that were turning to focus upon me. " - Obviously Eye.
"It was bright, so bright. Candles covered every surface, each glowing so powerfully that I could barely look directly at them" - Desolation?
"Instead it [the stole] was a pale, sickly yellow." - Corruption? I also heard the theory once, that this might have been a Web artifact? Some seem to think it's the thing Breekon talks about in MAG 128 "thrumming silk-wrapped thing of the spider, hiding away in an old steamer trunk." Not so sure about that myself though.
God, I love that ambient bell we hear in the background!
"Each was dressed in black from head to toe, and their skin was fevered, jaundiced yellow." - Corruption? But: "The eyes of every man, woman and child stared blankly forward, and their mouths hung open, wide and smiling, like their jaws had locked in silent rictus." sounds more like the Stranger…
"he raised his head and looked up as though to speak, but all that came from his throat was the single tolling sound of that bell" - Aaah, this is so alienating, it weirds me out and I love it!
"I noticed fewer and fewer of the parishioners seemed to be in the pews. Hope began to rise within me, as it seemed the words would work to banish these jaundiced watchers, and I pressed on. Finally, the pews were empty" - the Lonely?
"It was strange, the rich cloth curtain that covered that ornate metal box seemed stuck, so I pulled and pulled and eventually it came free." - Uhff…
"At that moment, seeing those bound corpses before me, I made the decision to take no action ever again. I will not commit the further sin of ending my life" - There, that's what I meant earlier, denying the End.
"Was my predecessor reading it at some point?" - Researching the Watcher's Crown perhaps???
"He was wearing a butcher’s apron and sat in front of two students" - Flesh.
"as well as removal of both their faces with a sharp blade, possibly a scalpel." - Could also mix in the Stranger.
"The face of James Mann was found to have been partially eaten by Father Burroughs." - Flesh.
"at no point did he perform any actions that might be analogous with the binding and actual murder of the students. Also, it strikes me that the altar server he described seems out of place with most of his other delusions, in that he appeared to have active agency, which is uncharacteristic for these visions the priest describes. Finally, there is the small detail mentioned in the police report that none of the tools used to kill or mutilate the victims were found at the scene. This all leads me to believe that there may have been a second person there that night" - Classic Knife-Hands Distortion!
"there is little appetite for re-opening the case" - Jon and his inappropriate puns^^
"the package was handed to them by a company called Breekon and Hope Deliveries." - Best boys!
So from visiting Hilltop Road to talking to Father Singh to cannibal Mass there was only one day right? He went to bed and missed morning Mass, got up because he wanted to talk to Singh and then ran away to The Oratory… Cause in MAG 19 Jon describes this as "could have led to the incident in 2009". Also! It is said that Bethany O’Connor matriculated in 2008, but MAG 8: Burned Out already happened in 2006?? Well…
All of your insight is making me think that through marking him with so many Fears (with a religious ritual no less) they felt closer to earth than they've ever been before and thus learned what they needed to do in order to pass through

Liveblogging TMA - Season 3 - MAG 96-99
"I know I leave Breekon and Hope Deliveries in safe hands. Safe hands where the skin feels wrong."
RETURN TO SENDER :
Oh ! The origins of Breekon and Hope !
Alfred Breekon was such a an awkward sweetheart, I am genuinely sad that he got fucked over by the twins. I wonder what was in the box though.
I do wonder what The Stranger wanted a delivery company for though. Was it just to make deals with other aspects ? I am guessing that anyone using Breekon and Hope now is allied with it.
I am sorry to hear that Jon is getting used to all of this. On one hand, he really needs to considering his life right now and where it's heading.
On the other hand, I don't want Jon to end up like Magnus or Elias, with only curiosity as his drive and no care for the victims and people around him. Or, well, yes care, but not as much as seeing them like mysteries to unfold.
Sarah Baldwin finds herself the first victim of the Jon and Daisy duo, which I hope I will get more of, because they're an absolute delight, and we discover that Gertrude did stuff and hid everything about it, once again, so fuck Jon I guess, he probably got himself in even more shit thatn he was expecting, because now The Stranger knows that the skin is still out there, which is just ... Great.
Jon, sweetie, I love you but you fucked up on this one. You are supposed to come out of situations with information, not your enemies. It's ok, you'll learn.
I am actually inclined to think that Elias is at fault here. Are we sure he wants to stop the Unknowing ? I don't know, he seems pretty eager to help the enemy, what with killing Gertrude and giving everyone information.
I am sure that the Unknowing is so unknowable that Elias could be curious enough to help make it happen just to know what it is like, earth be damned.
WE ALL IGNORE THE PIT :
"What is my metaphorical pit?"
... Oh Jon, please never change you absolute delight.
Personally, I think what was more of interest here was the old man and his "enjoy your sky" bit that makes me think of Simon Fairchild, but I doubt it actually was him, obviously, considering the description. Maybe another avatar ? Or someone that knows things and see that the one giving the statement was more fit for whatever concept Mike was an avatar of ?
Whatever, who cares, because Nikola Orsinov, I'm screaming ! Oh my god, I love her voice ? Gosh, she freaks me out so badly. It's great. Have I mentionned absolutely adoring this season ? Because I do.
Can someone please help Jon out though ? Like, he is just a glorified punching bag at this point.
And of course, his little stunt with Sarah did bring him trouble. Good thing Georgie wasn't there, I guess. I know she can't feel fear, but that doesn't exactly protect her from evil mannequins that likes to wear the skin of others.
God, please tell me that Gertrude did burn the skin.
LIGHTS OUT :
"This place is evil, Martin. And I think doing what It wants, probably makes us evil."
... The fuck you mean, Maxwell Rayner ? In 1864 ?
Urgh.
Anyway, I'm not touching that one, I'll just focus on the workplace shenanigans. Melanie tries to kill her boss, before ditching with Basira and Martin, which is good, he needs friends and Tim is blaming Jon for everything, despite knowing deep down it isn't actually his fault. You can just hear how Tim doesn't want to be like that, but he is just so tired.
You know, if Martin wasn't being told by Elias to feed The Eye more often, I would say that Tim himself would be the one to die this season, but it seems to me like Elias really is planning on just sacrificing Martin first. Why ? Was it always the plan ?
But the statements do need a lot of energy, and I am scared for my boy. I really hope that Melanie helping will be enough to at least slow the effects somewhat.
Still, I really hope Martin mentions having to record statements to Jon.
The Eye is recording more and more and I don't really know why, because it already knows all of this, doesn't it ? It is already seeing it ? Is The Eye a metaphor for us listeners ? Are we The Eye ?
I think it would be really meta, it sounds amazing.
And Elias just keeps getting hotter, somehow. Man, I love charismatic masterminds. I can't wait for him to keel over, cause I sure hope it happens, but until then I will enjoy every bit of him being a bastard that knows almost everything and lording it over everyone.
And using it to educate Melanie on how to actually poison people effectively, that one killed me. I'm in love.
Still, I'm surprised that Elias didn't know the tape was running. I guess he really doesn't realize everything. But I can't help but wonder just for who those tapes are for.
DUST TO DUST :
... You know what ?
Fuck this podcast.
I am out.
The quote of the post will be :
"Yep! He got really boring, and I’m a monster."
End Liveblogging.

!! !! !!
many ttrpg characters for you, my friend!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first off, my good good pulp cthulhu boy Roland! (I did introduce him when the game started, but that was a Whole Year Ago and he's been on my mind because I've been binging Malevolent, so!)
he's the (currently in game) 26 y/o fantasy son of Howard Carter, the Egyptologist who isn't much good at fighting, but IS quite good at languages (he started the game with 5 and picked up a bit of a 6th just sitting in a cafe for a day) and sticking his nose into trouble (a dust monster partially blinded him last sesh, but it's ok! he got better AND was smart enough to not try to shoot a rifle while trying to blink away the supernatural pocket sand)
he's the MOST fascinated with the occult and weird eldritch stuff people keep whispering about (even though he can't believe what eshe saw) and i'm sure Nothing Bad Will Come Of That At All :)
he's perfect and i love him and i WILL cry if something kills him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
next up: Lynne Cadogan!
this is an old monster of the week character of mine, but she was SO much fun. she's a demon, works in a flower shop, has an angel best friend & partner in crime/pretending to be cops/playing detective, drives a mint green prius and has a sawed-off shotgun in a pastel backpack
if her game ever crossed over with tma, she'd find a way to get on ghost hunt uk SPECIFICALLY so she could harass the ghosts and/or melanie and/or the entire archives staff
Tumblr media
in answering this ask, i pulled out my binder of all my old character sheets and man there are SO many good ones, but i'm gonna go with Juran for #3 because i think his design is cool as FUCK and heroforge got advanced enough a while back for me to actually get close to what i had envisioned! (and yes he was named for the umbra questline song from warframe that makes me cry every time i hear it)
he was my character for an angelic homebrew @warlordfelwinter made and ran years and years ago and i don't remember most of what happened (my literal only note says "vaguely remembered fighting in a battle and then woke up in a lake of fire" lmao) but i DO remember that he was a messenger and would use his big-ass wings to catch thermals and jetstreams and the like to be Quick with his deliveries, and that he ended the game with a bag of beans (unused) and an iguana (heroforge only had a turtle)
[send me a !! and i'll introduce you to an oc!]

I ate the quartermaster’s pen. He ate the quartermaster’s tongue. And that was that.
[Image Description: Two drawings of Breekon and Hope from the Magnus Archives set on a dark red background. The first drawing features Hope, who has tinted grayish green skin and is wearing a blue-gray polo shirt with a red heart patch on it that reads “B+H”, and a cap that has the letter H on it. His hand is reaching up to tug on a piece of melting, grayish, corpse-like skin that he is wearing like a mask, and his eyes beneath the mask are only visible as bright yellow in sunken black sockets. He is laughing and is backlit by a yellow circular shape with a white center resembling a sun. The second drawing features Breekon, a taller man with red tinted skin and sunken black eye sockets revealing bright yellow eyes. He is dressed the same as Hope, only his heart patch is green, and his cap has a letter B on it. He is blushing slightly and looking lovingly towards at Hope. He is backlit in the same way. The text on the drawings together reads “I kept the face we chose, but I loved him for our levity.” End ID]

TMA AU where everything is the same except Breekon and Hope aren't...whatever the fuck they are
They are just 2 really fucking strange Russian dudes that are completely human that deliver shit to avatars and put on stupid fake accents to better fit in with British people (no one points out that their accents suck because they don't want to be rude)
Bonus points if they are completely unaware of all of the supernatural shit that's going on and are just like "boy we sure do get sum strange deliveries don't we, Hope?" "You are right, Breekon, I wonder why that is?" "I'm not sure. Oh well. Looks like we have another delivery to that weird circus we use to work at" "oh how lovely :)! Also, that coffin we keep having to deliver is back" "hm, weird"

The Joys of Fandom, or, how TMA helped me rediscover my love of tea
So among the many (many) good things The Magnus Archives podcast has brought to my life, none has been quite so profound as remembering how much I love making a good cup of tea. I’ve got a whole post about how it’s helped me categorize the anxiety cloud I live with on a constant basis, how it’s gotten me writing again, and writing poetry which I haven’t done in forever, how identifying with so many openly queer boys going through so much crap has helped me figure out that I want to transition.
But.
Tea is the reason we’re here today, because making a pot of tea has become a daily ritual since I started listening to TMA, and it’s been one of those tiny things that’s changed my life profoundly, and I have TMA to thank for this almost entirely.
I did not grow up drinking tea. I am from the Seattle, Washington area, and I’m just old enough Starbucks was a popular local coffee shop when I was a kid. My parents both drank a TON of coffee, my mother basically runs on the stuff, and by the time I was 6 I was drinking coffee too. Tea, growing up, was Lipton, sometimes iced or sometimes not. I didn’t even realize herbal tea was tea. Green tea was a thing one drank at Chinese restaurants. I was not at all informed.
When I got my first job, I would stop at Starbucks during the bus layover (as once does in the Seattle area) and one day in a fit of teenaged desire to be “cool” and “writerly” because I’d seen a tin of “Writer’s Chai” in the store I bought a chai latte. I loved it, and that became my go-to Starbucks drink.
I still didn’t really get tea, but I at least started learning how to boil water in the kettle and waiting for it to actually boil, pouring it over the tea bag, etc. I didn’t put in milk or sugar because I drank coffee black unless it was a latte or a mocha. I would just sort of... boil the water and pour it over and wait a few minutes and drink the tea with the bag still in the mug.
It wasn’t until I moved to Toronto that I sat down and had a good cup of tea. The woman who hosted the social group I was part of had her particular tea-making rituals, and she encouraged me to try it with milk and sugar, and it was... amazing. Life-changing, even. My perseveration drive kicked into full swing and I had to know everything about tea and its history and how to make a proper cup and so on and so forth. I learned all I could from our hostess, and then turned to the internet.
I bought a kettle to make tea at home but my ex wasn’t really supportive of my desire to brew tea on the regular, so loose leaf and teapots and “does the milk go in in cup before or after the tea” had to wait until I moved out and got a place of my own.
Then I moved to Tallahassee.
In Tallahassee, the coffee was atrocious unless it was from a couple of specific places, mostly serving cafe con leche. But I had my own place and my own dishes and I could have a teapot and make tea and nobody could stop me. So I did. Mostly for myself, while I was contemplating things, and it was really nice to sit and stare out at the ridiculously heavy Florida rain--which hit, in Tallahassee, right about 4:15 in the afternoon all summer so perfect for tea time.
I moved back to Seattle with my spouse, and we moved into my mother’s house. For a long while we didn’t have a kitchen of our own and we had small children, so tea wasn’t a thing I did any more. I had leftover coffee (or canned/bottled coffee) for the caffeine fix, but rarely tea. When my grandmother died and we moved into her old apartment we didn’t have a stove, and I despise heating water for tea in the microwave.
So for the better part of a decade, I barely drank any tea at all. I did discover Oi Ocha in this time, which is bottled green tea from Japan, which is amazing and I love it, but again--it was in a bottle. Not a thing I was personally making.
Then I started listening to The Magnus Archives, and I really identified with Martin Blackwood, because of reasons too complicated to get into here. But it inspired me to want to make tea again, and so I started getting K-cup pods, but it just... wasn’t... right. It wasn’t the same. I mean, it was tea, but it wasn’t... tea.
So I went and bought an electric kettle, and a teapot, and a strainer, and ordered regular deliveries of loose leaf tea, and started making tea for myself and my spouse. I developed my own ritual: cold water in the kettle, put hot water into the teapot (so it doesn’t crack), put three scoops of loose leaf in the strainer. Pour out the water in the teapot when the kettle boils, put in the strainer, pour the boiling water over the strainer. Wait four minutes or so, and while you’re waiting put a splash of half-and-half in the tea mugs (milk goes first so it doesn’t scald and we like the taste of half-and-half best). Then pour the tea into the mugs. The mugs are big enough that I take three spoons of sugar and my spouse four, so put all the sugar into the mugs and then increase the entropy (aka stir) until the sugar’s dissolved. Bring the tea out into the living room, enjoy.
The first time I got it all right, and made a good cup of tea, I literally cried, I was so happy. It was like seeing the sun after it had been dark for so long I’d forgotten what the sun looked like.
The thing I have come to realize about what tea means to me is something that Jon says in the trailer for Season 5 of TMA. Martin brings him a cup of “tea” and Jon goes “that’s not tea” and, indeed, it turns out to be some weird skittering thing. The following exchange really crystallized things for me:
Jon: This is no longer a world where you can trust-- Martin: Tea?! Jon: Comfort.
And that was it, right there. Coffee is fuel, for me. Coffee is “Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There.” (Quite literally; part of playing Persona 5 was remembering how much I love trying out new coffee blends.)
Tea, however, is comfort. Tea is slowing down. Tea is caffeine, yes, and therefore focus for my poor ADD/autistic brain, but it’s afternoon focus. It’s contemplation. It’s sitting and breathing in the aroma and thinking about things in a way that isn’t spiraling or catastrophizing. Whether it’s breakfast tea or Earl Grey or green tea, or an herbal like peppermint or chamomile, tea for me is self-care.
Taking those few minutes to get up and go make a pot of tea in the afternoon, to stop the business of the day and just stand there waiting for the kettle to boil, is something I’ve desperately needed. Coffee is easy to sort of make as “fire and forget,” to the point that I’ve gulped down cold or lukewarm coffee I’d forgotten about just because I need the caffeine. Tea, though, if you’re doing it right you have to stand there and wait for the water to boil and wait for the tea to steep. If you walk away to do something else you’ll ruin the whole thing. I completely understand why Martin is running around making tea for everyone in Season 2 all the time, because everything is falling apart in slow motion and it’s a chance to stop, to focus on making the tea, and then to take the time enjoying the tea itself.
Making tea for others also means love to me. I make tea for my spouse alongside myself. I included one of my teenaged children in tea-making for the first time yesterday and my youngest keeps getting the last bit of tea in the pot, and it’s such a joy to see their faces light up. Bringing someone tea means bringing them a mug of love and care. Another reason I identify with Martin--I often don’t know what to say to help someone, so I try to be sure they’re fed and hydrated and cared for. And I, too, had to learn to stop setting myself on fire to keep those people warm. I had to learn to be sure I was fed and hydrated and cared for, so I could care for them. But even now as I get older and wiser and grumpier I still run around making sure everyone’s fed and has had their mug of tea, I just don’t do it at my own expense anymore.
One of my next crochet projects is a tea cozy in the shape of a green owl, in honor of the Magnus Institute owl, because my little tea-making ritual is always going to be connected to TMA in my head. Also I have a “Fifteen Fears” mug and my spouse has a “Magnus Archives” owl symbol mug, so it’s literally just this really intense connection between TMA and tea, for me.
It’s funny how much comfort a horror podcast has given me since I’ve started listening. There are a few fandoms that have profoundly changed me--Star Trek was the first big one, Babylon 5 was the first that directly inspired me, Mass Effect helped me get out of suicidal depression, Persona (specifically Persona 5) inspired me to take responsibility for myself in a way therapy never quite managed.
And here I am with TMA, figuring out how to navigate anxiety and pain and grief in a world that feels like it’s falling apart around my ears. The concept that what we do matters; that right or wrong you should be making a decision instead of just reacting from fear or surprise; that sometimes you screw up and there’s nothing to be done, that “sorry” doesn’t fix everything, that sometimes nothing you do will fix anything and you can’t let that paralyze you... it’s all been necessary, and helpful, and I’ve been terribly grateful.
Thanks to TMA I’m writing again after years of terrible writer’s block. I’m facing my own fears and accepting that despite (because of?) my terrible arachnophobia I’d probably serve the Web if I served anything (although Eye and Lonely would also get a look in--I did say I identified with Martin pretty strongly). I’m recognizing dysphoria and dealing with it after years of trying to deny the elephant in the room.
I’m also making tea again. And for that, I am eternally, profoundly grateful.
