it’s so important that Alecto got to be Nona actually because it’s clear from the end that the things she does well at as Nona—the lessons of the hand and the mouth—she doesn’t do well as Alecto:

So yeah. It’s important that she got to kiss. It’s important that she got to meet Hot Sauce and the gang, and love Pyrrha and Camilla and Palamedes. It’s important that she got to experience all the tiny minute details of body language and their meanings, and appreciate the difference between long lashes and short ones, and know that she didn’t want to be a redhead—for being redheaded to have any meaning at all.

Because even though she’s Alecto again, those memories are still there. You can’t take loved away.

You Can't Take Loved Away

I started sketching this soon after I finished Nona the Ninth for the first time. That book hurt me. Deeply. Found Family stories always do but this one was especially rough. I found it interesting to see how devastated so many people were about Paul. I loved the description of Paul's creation and how Cam and Pal came to the choice of making them. During my re-read, I thought it was a fascinating way of going about the character and showing their own version of lyctorhood.

If you told 80% of TLT characters they were the protagonist of a story by virtue of being the only truly sane person, at least in terms of making reasonable decisions, they would believe you. The only people I think would disagree:

G1deon, would think John was fully sane (and be completely wrong, the poor guy)

Ortus, would think Aigleminae was fully sane (this one's dubious I'll admit)

Marta, would think Judith was fully sane

Judith in GTN, would think Marta was fully sane (with her loss, nobody anymore)

Pal, would think Cam was fully sane

The Fourth and Fifth, would think their pairmate was fully sane

Dulcinea, would think Protesilaus was fully sane

Nona, would not believe she makes reasonable enough decisions to be focal in such a story. Would be correct.
