Ardeth Bay Headcanons

As well as his native variant of Arabic, he is fluent in a number of other regional dialects, and proficient to fluent in English, French, German, Italian, some Coptic and some Middle and Late Kingdom phrases.

Is an avid reader, especially of poetry. He'll pick up any volume of poems he can, ancient, modern, or anything in between, in any language he knows.

Poetry and storytelling are extremely popular pastimes amongst the Medjai. As well as readings, Ardeth writes some poetry of his own.

When they are invented and he gets a chance to experience them, he loves roller-coasters.

Drinks alcohol sparingly, but has been known to indulge in pomegranate wine if he's feeling laid-back.

Beverage of choice is strong Turkish coffee, which he drinks anytime he has the water to spare.

Has a sweet tooth, and gets sparkle-eyed for strawberry tarts when he first tries them while visiting the Carnahan-O'Connells in England.

Strong coffee + sweet tooth means his favorite treat would be a cafe mocha, full fat milk and whipped cream with cinnamon on top.

Has a younger sister, Nesreen, with whom he is very close (even though she is prone to teasing him, as little sisters do.)

His mother is deaf, so he signs with her using a Medjai variant of Arabic sign language which incorporates some of their signal codes and other gestures.

Has always had a falcon named Horus since he was first old enough to learn. Horus I was presented to him by his father. Subsequent birds all take the name (Horus II, Horus III, etc.) like a little dynasty.

Has cultivated a good rapport with a merchant in Cairo who makes and sells the highest quality soaps and emollients. Ardeth keeps his spare money aside to pick up the best shampoo and hair oil when he's in the city. Those luxuriant locks don't happen by accident.

(He may ignore the question, if asked about it, but Nesreen will happily spill the beans.) If he shares his hair care secrets and products with you, you have made it to his innermost circle.

Surprisingly good with children. When interacting with young kids, he will squat down to talk on their level, face to face. Enjoys giving piggyback rides to young family members, and lifting them up to sit on the saddle in front of him when they are too young to learn to ride yet.

Has a great dry sense of humor he shows only around people he's comfortable with (and when he's not in Serious Medjai Chieftain mode).

He inherited the knife with the elaborate handle (seen on his back in the first film) from his grandfather.

Slow to open up and trust people, but once you've earned it, you have a friend for life.

I got tagged by @accidentallylita (whom I can't tag, for some reason? TUMBLR.) for a "(nine) people I'd like to get to know better", and since I have five minutes I'm doing this right now!

Last song: a customer/service user (I work at a library) needed help putting and taking songs off her iPod the other day, and since she had some Man of La Mancha (or rather L'homme de la Mancha, the French version with Jacques Brel) songs on it she reminded me of the Quantum Leap episode where Scott Bakula gets to show off his pipes on a few songs from it 💜 There's a medley on YT and it's criminal that we never got a full musical with him as Don Quixote!

Favourite colour: purple 💜

Currently watching: I figured a rewatch of Avatar the Last Airbender (the cartoon) was overdue, so that's what I'm watching on my lunch breaks in between "how to DM" videos on YT. Although we're also watching the last Doctor Who specials with the Best Beloved (only one left, the first real Fifteen episode) and we love it.

Spicy/savoury/sweet: sweet and savoury and not too spicy.

Relationship status: basically married for the past two decades.

Current obsession: Critical Role, and more specifically Vox Machina (and more specifically that fucking bard *shakes fist*)

Last movie/tv show: I watched Bedazzled for the first time in a long time last night. Some of that really didn't age well, but Brendan's still adorable. We just finished the second season of Strange New Worlds and it's SO GOOD. I think it's officially my favorite Star Trek.

Spicy/savory/sweet: YES. Ideally all three together. If I have to choose one though, savory.

OH MY GOD

thank you. I am trying to write more of them so I can continue to ruin your day. but in the meantime I will always rec the work of @sweetfayetanner and @batbobsession, who wrote deep, loving, multi-hued, (somehow slightly sad?) fics that I stare at with my eyes sticking out, googly-looney-tunes fashion, while my jaw drops and my heart beats like a gong

and I also want to point to @myfellowcandlesticks and @gryffindorbraids and @theteaisaddictive and @lumiereandcogsworth ESPECIALLY for their sweet sweet Belle/Adam fics that channel emotions I never can

and while they’re not writing batb specific work so much anymore I think we’d all have a lot less pizzazz without the contributions of @tinydooms and @naturepointstheway and @vlleneuve (you each have written a fic that’s made me cry at some point)

and also @ticenchantedtoc and @makeshiftraven are single handedly holding up current fandom with insanely intricate and incredible fanart and fanfics that have me on the floor most days

And I am always forgetting someone obvious or other because my mind is a great SIEVE but I do have a recs page which I very much recommend looking at!! because the funnest part of being in this fandom has always been the fandom itself, and all the weird and talented and devoted people who write and draw and play in it. thanks anon!! love u xx 🔥🔥

Honestly, she's the only reason I'm here 😆 I stumbled on her because she wrote one of the only three fanfics based on the Tarzan books, got hooked, read through all the Mummy stuff, started fangirling Brendan Fraser way too hard, ran out of tinydooms fics and, now I'm here lurking 😅

I was tagged by both @rose-of-pollux and @tuttle4077 for a "Find the word in your WIP" game! Here are the rules: Find the words from the list in your WIPs and post the paragraph they belong to.

Thanks a lot :D They both gave me different words, too, so let's go!

I ended up using What Nightmares May Come (my long HH fic) a lot, if only because it's so long (64k+ words, gah, if only the inspiration could come back!!) but also from The Message (the follow-up to Mon Pays et Paris), three The Mummy WIPs, and one word from a Legend of Vox Machina somewhat long WIP. And since it got so long, I'm putting most of it under a cut ^^'

“Man, now I know why you won’t play poker with Newkirk. He’d clean you right out.” He sighed. “LeBeau, you can’t just take a radio because you feel like it. Do you know how many of the guys miss listening to the Andrew Sisters or the World Series?”

The tea was light and slightly sweet, with a hint of mint. Egyptian style. Rick – though more of a coffee guy – had to admit that for what he considered to be lightly flavoured hot water, it wasn’t that bad, especially without the obligatory splash of milk generally favoured by the British.

The conversation in Klink’s office seemed to be over, so Kinch unplugged the coffee pot and replaced the lid. They were all thinking the same thing; all operations would have to come to a complete stop. The absence of the sub already meant they couldn’t go through with their orders of ‘assisting escaping prisoners’; but this meant that the other part, about ‘cooperating with all friendly forces and using every means possible to injure and harass the enemy’, was nixed as well if nobody could set foot outside camp.

Something told Rick that particular turn of phrase glossed over many others, much less pleasant. Which both siblings probably had their own share ‘flung at’ them, come to think of it.

Scanlan let his hand fall and rolled his eyes.

“Look, you don’t need to get your panties in a knot. I can see better than you at the moment, so the way I see it there’s only one way you won’t fall behind and get lost.” He walked back to Vax and thrust out his hand with a grin large enough to be obvious even in the dark. “Wanna hold hands?”

“Oh, perfectly, Major,” Klink muttered in an almost defeated tone, resisting the urge to rub his temples. The lingering headache had been small this morning, the inevitable result of a restless night, but Hochstetter excelled in the art of making migraines in other people’s heads grow in a way even Hogan did not.

Currently reading: Finally picked up 'Crocodile on the Sandbank' by Elizabeth Peters! I'm also listening to the audio book of 'The Fifth Season' by N.K. Jemisin on my commute. The Broken Earth trilogy is an absolute triumph, and I love it so much, but holy hell is it hard to get through now that I have a kid.

Last song: I've been listening to 'Let me Drown' by Orville Peck on repeat lately.

Currently watching: Dead Ringers, but I suck at watching things by myself so it's taking me a while. Rachel is incredible in it, though!

Fic I'm currently reading: Just finished reading @accidentallylita's Twelve Days of Christmas! But that's really the only fic I've read in a while.

Next on my watchlist: Ehhh, we finished Strange New Worlds (SO GOOD!) and now we're completely out of things that sound worth watching.

Current obsession: Wishing I had the emotional energy to be obsessed with something. Does being obsessed with getting 5 minutes to myself count?

Happy birthday, @tinydooms! The mental image of Rick wearing knickerbockers for a fashionable country party they’re invited to was too good to pass :D I unfortunately did what I’m sometimes wont to do, which is rush to do the assignment without (re)reading the instructions, which is why I ended up yesterday with a much more autumnal vibe and had to rework the colours in a hurry to make it more May-like. (Putting the original under a cut if you’re curious!)

So joyeux anniversaire ! Thank you for the excuse to draw these two in period-accurate clothes, that’s always a lot of fun :o)

(I drew the tweed by hand and it shows, lol but I draw the line at wool! That was a texture :D)
