Hi! I’m getting a leopard gecko soon at a local reptile show. I have a 10 gal ready for him, I know it’s small but I’m getting a tiny baby and I 100% am upgrading in the future. I see a lot of different tank setups, some with sand or dirt. I was planning on using the ground walnut shell ‘sand’. Is that good or is dirt better? Also, as far as heat/light goes I have a heat mat for one side of the tank. Is that sufficient or do they need a basking bulb as well?

Walnut shell and sand are both bad ideas. They’re dusty which can cause respiratory complications, dirty and trap bacteria, and they’re easily ingested, which can lead to impaction. Soil is better, but unless you’re going to do a proper mix of a few different types to get the right consistency and air humidity (or lack of, rather), plain soil on its own isn’t the best either.

I’d recommend tile (without adhesive!). You can get it relatively cheap at a hardware store, it’s easy to clean, and there’s no risk of impaction. It’s a perfect first substrate to start out with while you get the ropes of reptile ownership down :)

How fat is too fat for a mouse? I have two 6 month old females that are super chubby. I free feed hamster/parrot feed so they have nuts fruits and seeds. They’re super round and I don’t want it to affect their health lol

So it depends on the mouse, but basically if they look visibly overweight, then they need to lose weight. Mice are so small that any excess weight has the ability to be harmful. Hamster/parrot feed doesn’t have the right nutrition for them; it has too much fat and not enough grain, and too much sugar from fruit isn’t good for them either. I would recommend feeding pellets/blocks that are made for mice or rats. This link has different rat/mouse foods listed and their nutritional value compared (not ranked by what’s “best,” just listed). I personally feed Oxbow mouse and young rat and aside from a few gluttons all my mice are of a healthy weight. :)

Thanks!!! I’ll see if I can get some tile because that seems like a great option. Will the heat pad under the tank heat up the tiles properly or is a basking bulb something I should get? Also, I hear conflicting information about uvb for these guys. Do they need it or is it just something that is good for them but not necessary?

You’re very welcome! An UTH (under tank heater/heat pad) will heat up the titles wonderfully. Slate tile, especially, conducts and holds heat very well, definitely be sure to keep an eye on your surface temperature so it’s not too hot. Or you can use a CHE (ceramic heat emitter), which works like a basking bulb and fits in a lamp above the tank, but doesn’t emit light, just heat. Since leopard geckos are nocturnal, they don’t need a basking bulb, just consistent heat. UVB wouldn’t hurt, but isn’t a necessity in most nocturnal animals. They do however need calcium powder, which you can either dust feeder insects with, or place a bit of powder in a bowl/dish and leave it in the tank for your gecko to eat when it wants. It kind of just depends on what works best for you and your gecko.

Umsurprisingly there’s some FOB… but I’ve made an effort not to make the whole list FOB 😂

1. Wilson (Expensive Mistakes) by Fall Out Boy- just released last week, such a tune, features my favourite lyrics of the moment “If I could get my shit together, I’m gonna run away and never see any of you again” and also “I hope the roof flies off and I get blown out into space, …, I know it’s just a number but you’re the 8th wonder, I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color”

2. Hold Me Tight Or Don’t by Fall Out Boy - another new one and it is catchy af. Also it has a wonderful Latin beat and as I used to teach and dance salsa the fact I could do so to this song is excellent.

3. Leaving California by Maroon 5 - so much love for the way this song builds up to the chorus and also reminds me of my wonderful California holiday last year.

4. Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time by Panic! at The Disco - so the fact that Brendon is ridiculously hot in the video to this song adds to the fact that again this song is so fan catchy!

5. This Love by Maroon 5 - I suppose this is my first obsession in a way, love it

6. Emperor’s New Clothes by Panic! at The Disco - again a lyrics and tune choice “I’m taking back the croooooooown…” “I’m all dressed up and naked, see what’s mine and take it”

7. Wooden Boat by Take That - an older obsession but I do love Jason Orange and this song is just wonderful. Go listen!

8. Shape Of You by Ed Sheeran - great lyrics and the same beat as hold me tight above so same dance based reason!

9. Cheap thrills by Sia - It’s catchy and danceable!

10. Dance, Dance by Fall Out Boy - so I had to sneak a final FOB song on here, I’m not even gonna explain this choice. I mean have you heard it?!
