a/n: this is a rolling document, so if you have any more questions, i can still add them here :D

congratulations for completing this 100,000-something word monster of a fic. whether you read this as it was posted, or as an AO3 nightly binge (bless your heart), i want to sincerely thank you for taking the time to read thin ice.

it has been an absolute pleasure to interact with you all. i’ve seen all of your kind words, screaming “please don’t break them up” or “gdi grace are they gonna ever confess or not”, and incoherent sobbing.

at times, i thought i would never see the end of thin ice, because, well, it’s long! everyone’s support motivation was the reason why i saw through the end of thin ice. you all have given me such kind words, and i hope that thin ice has lived up to at least some of it.

i would like to give a brief thank you to some folks:

piper, you will never read this, but this whole damn thing is dedicated to you. if y’all don’t know who she is, piper is one of my good friends who plays hockey. piper served as my muse for both childe’s technical hockey terms and y/n’s blunt and fierce personality.

my wonderful beta, thank you for proofreading this whole thing so some of it makes sense.

and of course, to all my moots, especially @wolfhookk, for always being there when i needed you most :D

now, i asked for some of y’all to send in questions for a q&a, considering the time it took to write thin ice has been approximately 643 days. here are your answers.

Q: what made you write thin ice?

A: it was a combination of a lot of things tbh. piper is the obvious answer, but the earliest, i think, was my crush on this hockey guy in seventh grade. i was absolutely in love with this guy, he was respectful, kind, intelligent, and his only flaw was that he played hockey (never date a hockey guy. they are walking red flags. unless they’re named childe). anyways, to get his attention, i started watching hockey. i unironically love hockey now tho.

there was also this online web comic series called check please! that i really adored and loved :)

i was also making thin ice as a way to write enemies to lovers, which was one of my favorite tropes to read. plus, nothing wrong with a good slowburn :D

Q: did any movies or books really inspire you to write thin ice?

A: hmm outside of check please!, not really! i will say i watched a couple of documentaries about hockey, and the mighty ducks a couple of times, but that’s about the extent of my inspiration.

also while in the middle of thin ice, i was looking for books to read about hockey and found so many not safe for work novels D: was not a fun time

Q: what made you write y/n and childe’s love story the way you did?

A: i’ve always enjoyed reading enemies to lovers, no matter the au. so!! i just transferred that love into this fic :)

i also wanted to display everything that builds up into a relationship, because realistically, i don’t think love builds overnight. everything, from the first “what the fuck you taught my brother how to skate” to “what the fuck why did you injure yourself” to “what the fuck i kind of love you” to “what the fuck i want you to marry me and i want to spend the rest of my life with you”, was something that i truly believed could happen in real life. small, quirky things, like when y/n gave childe the soup or when they walked in on childe taking an ice bath, are what i loved writing about their relationship the most, and again!! realistic slowburn y’all!

(also y/n and childe never stopped their banter because that was always their way of showing affection for one another, and like. it made more sense to me over them being all over each other; that’s a pretty sharp turn of relationship lolol)

Q: What’s your favorite thing about thin ice? maybe a scene or an experience while you were writing it?

A: i really really love the dialogue in thin ice!! i think it gradually improved over the course of its existence, which i am super proud of :D

my favorite scene would be the entirety of chapter 22, the kiss scene on the ice (had that planned out from the third chapter), and the scene where y/n and childe sleep together on the couch (personally i call it the “stay” scene :D)

my favorite experience would be teasing some angst. love seeing y’all cry in my inbox <3

Q: where did you struggle with thin ice?

A: i definitely struggled with technical terms as i’m not really a sporty person lmaooo i do speech and debate, mun, and literally every other extracurricular except for sports LOL so i struggled with how hockey technicalities works (ironic since i watch it every wknd) and figure skating jumps and spins too ^^; eventually i got the hang of it, but thin ice is not 100% accurate to ice hockey or skating

Q: around what age is y/n and where are their parents?

A: for most of thin ice, y/n is 22, as they are a senior in college. towards the end of it, they would be around 25 in chapter 25 (as it’s been three years since childe and y/n got together), and about 26 in the epilogue because they got married a year later.

as for their parents, i wanted to make sure that y/n was able to be anyone and everyone. since not everyone has a great relationship has a great relationship with their parents, i left them out of it. whether or not they actually have parents is completely up to the reader.

Q: got any writing rituals?

A: ooh i actually really love just writing in bed !! am i aware that it’s not good to write in bed bc you end up sleepy ?? yeah,,,, do i really care ?? absolutely not !!

i also like tea and some background music when writing :D usually puts me in a good mood!!

Q: why did thin ice take so long?

A: imo i think it took so long because of my writing process. for me, i don’t sit down and write out a plan and get at it. i often have to spend a couple of weeks figuring out what i want for this next chapter and write it up in a few days' time. i had a very brief outline for thin ice a couple of months after i started writing it, but mostly let the whole thing unfold with time.

Q: will we ever see a sequel?

A: nope! can confirm that this is is basically the end of thin ice and i will not be returning to write up another sequel. i feel like the story is complete as it is, and honestly i cannot think of anything that would induce a sequel. i would be willing to write a drabble or two, but no more full-length series from here y’all.

Q: like y/n and childe, where do you go from here?

A: again, no sequels for thin ice as far as i’ve planned ^^; i think i’m just gonna do a few fics and headcanons here and there while i plan for my next series. but first and foremost i will be taking a nap after this

[Magi reread] Night 21: Legend

(alternatively: Saya loses her mind about the fucking moon)

Shit's still dark, man.

Like, damn, that's quite a visual here.

Honestly, I'm just putting it here, because I like the way it sounds. Idk why.

Take a moment to appreciate that this translation has that name written differently in EVERY CHAPTER. I'm not even joking. At first it was Doruji, then Dolji in the previous one, and now it's Dorzi, like, bro, make up your mind.

Honestly, I'm kind of sad how the Kouga Clan loses it's importance later on. There's so much lore on them in this arc...

I like his quest for identity, especially here. It's actually a pretty cool character arc, though I think it really peaks in the Kou Empire Arc, and then is kind of meh, like everything else in the Final Arc, save for Kougyoku and whatever the fuck she and Alibaba have going on.

But back to Aladdin, it's actually kind of interesting when you think about it, because that quest wasn't really talked about in the first arc. Then again, the entire Dungeon Arc wasn't even all that focused on Aladdin's internal conflicts or anything. We were witnessing his shenanigans from the perspective of other people, Leila's in the first chapter, then mostly Alibaba's, whose thoughts we could even pry into, while Aladdin remained this mysterious and powerful kid he'd met. But here we have it, Aladdin's perspective. Aladdin's journey and self-discovery. As much as I love Alibaba, I'm really glad he's not there, so we can get to know Aladdin outside of his relationship with his best friend. Here these characters present are side-characters, so there's nobody to really steal his spotlight.

But also I'm kind of thinking about Mogamett's backstory, which, man, I can't wait for the Magnostadt Arc. Honestly, his last words are one of my absolute favorite quotes, probably next to Kise's monologue about Aomine in KnB, and People need other people from MP100. The latter is kind of funny, it's nothing groundbreaking and special, but also I think that's why it feels so special, y'know?

Ok, Saya, shut up, it's the wrong arc.

Honestly, that's one of the biggest themes in Magi. The People need other people thing.

He heard the story about what Magi is, and he looks so damn sad. : (

But aside from that, honestly? I love it. This entire scene is really wholesome. Aladdin might not know where he came from and all that stuff, but he does have an identity. And identity that comes from the relationships with other people. I'm a sucker for this theme, as long as it's used properly, and here is a damn good example.

X-Wing Alliance (tying up the loose end that is Uncle Antan, whilst maybe extending to the Liberation of Coruscant)

Quake 4 (eliminating the remnants of the Strogg while fighting what may be fellow humans sent to hunt you down)

Return to Castle Wolfenstein+Enemy Territory (just more B.J. Blazkowicz adventures)

Star Wars: Squadrons (modding, more ships like the Assault Gunboat and E-Wing, and a far better and more expanded story campaign akin to X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter: Balance of Power)

Battlezone II: Combat Commander (probably cleaning up General Braddock's remaining yet fanatical forces, with an alternate campaign showing the full extermination of the Scion)

Batman: Arkham Origins (basically, a singleplayer campaign between Batman and Dick Grayson Robin based on the premise of the now defunct multiplayer)

Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 (just more missions for the Colonial Marine, Alien, and Predator; maybe even more modding tools)

Original War (an Arab campaign that explains the main game's plot holes, among others)

SiN: Wages of Sin (perhaps an alternate timeline where the elusive Elexis Sinclaire was actually killed, thus preventing the existence of the lackluster episodic sequel)

Valiant Hearts: The Great War (an extension involving the American intervention, the fall of czarist Russia and the rise of Communism, and the end of WW1)

Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars+Kane's Wrath (basically, Kane's Wrath-like takes for the GDI and the Scrin, with maybe a bonus campaign involving CABAL remnants and an actual crossover with Red Alert 2 by way of a Nod agent about to be sent back in time named Yuri)

Brutal Legend (even I can't think which)

Singularity (mayhaps an interquel involving another time traveller who may or may not be helping the protagonists)

Impossible Creatures (again, I can't think of anything)

Shadowrun Returns (Dragonfall and Hong Kong are great, but really, we need more)

BattleTech 2018 (same as Shadowrun Returns)

Mad Max (more adventures, vehicles, and franchise fanservice, and I don't mean the skin kind)

Halo Wars (just some side stories over the course of the Human-Covenant War)

Total War: Shogun 2 (Mongol invasion, 'nuff said)

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (I don't really need to say more)

Act of War: Direct Action+High Treason (either a campaign that shows us the fall of the Consortium or, better yet, a full blown alternate universe Consortium campaign)

House of the Dying Sun (more intriguing missions and ships, I guess)

Edit: OK, Valiant Hearts actually got a sequel named Coming Home in late January 2023, in a different medium that does show the American intervention and thus the end of WW1. Suffice to say, heard it did well.

y'know what, fuck it. Because I feel like it. Some of my tags probably seem random AF to anyone who's looking at them, and I like the stories behind them so I'mma tell some of them and you can't fucking stop me because this is my blog and I do what I want around here.

But I’ll at least shove it under a cut bc it’s longish XD if you want to know about a tag I didn’t mention, there’s an askbox somewhere around here owo

General Tags: Audible Emotion is my music tag, because I have said for almost four decades that music is what emotions sound like.

So Let It Be Written is my positivity tag, because gdi we need this shit and it felt right to use that even if some of the positive stuff in there isn't actually written or a wish, it's just positive, feel-good shit.

Ship Tags: Gunblade, because at one point I think that was the actual ship name for them. Yes I was a Homestuck. No I am not ashamed of this fact. The fandom was a trash fire but the story was damn fucking good.

I Know, because that is one of the rawest, most emotional replies you could give in that context to someone confessing their love and to this day I adore the fact that that was Harrison's idea to say rather than have Han tell Leia he loves her too. Also it just defines their entire relationship.

Shadowed Flame, because Hughes is Roy's shadow and also it sounds damned poetic, fight me.

Mirrors of Wisdom because I stole it from a friend after 'And they were roommates' got old XD And because they are. Haitham himself admits that Kaveh is his perfect mirror [though naturally never to Kaveh's face XD]

Fox and Hound because well -gestures at them- Tighnari is a fox, Cyno is Anubis-coded and his constellation is 'Lupus Aureus' which translates roughly to 'Golden Wolf', I mean come on.

Raining Fire because of Ayato's Burst making it rain in an AOE effect and Thoma being a Pyro user. Also it sounds pretty and it's a very evocative phrase.

Hurricane because I mean have you met them? Anemo plus Hydro with Electro = Storm.

Disarm because of an old Wolfwood AMV set to the song of the same name by the Smashing Pumpkins and, honestly? The more I see of the pair the more that song fucking fits them and it hurts.

Persona Non Grata because I think I'm funny. It's also a dig at Akechi that my Joker would 100% use.

Cross-stitch because that's the actual ship name for them and it's still funny almost ten years later.

Character Tags: Stay Frosty because it just sounds like something Kaeya would say, the smartass.

Hydro Bastard Man because that's what I've been calling Tartaglia for ages and it amuses me.

Anemo Twerp because he's a fucking twerp. Also he uses Anemo, but mostly he's a fucking twerp XD

Stranger in a Strange Land because A: I love the way it sounds and always have, and B: it's what he is.

Little Lost Firefly, because in Japanese her name is Hotaru. Which means Firefly. [His name is Sora, for Sky, if you're curious]

Himboni because well, have you met Itto?

Fallen Captain because it is 100% how he sees himself and I can't think of anything better for Dain. I'm working on it.

Cousin Keiji because my personal P5 Protag is named Keiji, and my sibling's friendgroup has this thing where all their Protags are related [generally various iterations of sibling-hood] so I just declared mine to be a cousin since his last name is Kyouraku rather than either canonical one. Thus, Cousin Keiji.

Wisteria Warrior because one of the kanji in Saitou's name translates to 'Wisteria', and I think it suits Hakuouki!Saitou.

Eyes of Sky because have you seen Gojou Satoru's eyes? They are unfair to the extreme. Also I couldn't think of anything better.

SHSL Average Joe because have you met Hinata Hajime? He's so mediocre he'd get an Honorable Mention at a mediocrity competition. And he knows it.

So basically Mae gets taken in by the blu mercs, they become fond of each other, she graduates from on-base intern to in-battle backup to a scout(they nickname her Flanker or Midfielder to tell the two scouts apart), sometime along the way they meet Apollo & Dan, and then the events of the comics happen after the chaos trio gets separated again by some plot device or another. Also zhe definitely fuses with Scout at one or more points, and maybe some other mercs.

I was just reading this and let's break it down

First of all we have the pit fall and struggle of all real long term relationships. TS doesn't give us bullshit reasoning for a break up. It's a realistic push and pull between someone and their own identity as they struggle to settle down in their mid to late twenties.

Hes not getting what he needs and he doesn't seem to know what he wants: it's natural and human to be confused in relationships. I think a lot of the hate towards this arc comes from the desire to see the ship together rather than to see the characters grow as individuals. Star is still growing in his confidence of his wants and needs and he's allowed to do that. This backwards step is allowed and permissible in character growth. In fact we usually see this right before someone has major changes and makes positive growth in their life.

Characters aren't static tbh I'd rather have a dynamic relationship being portrayed.

And boy is this dynamic because get me a large popcorn Ric is dragging him.

He acknowledges seeing Star earlier when Star stopped by signaling he needed Ric. But he put up a boundary and said no and continued his life.

I could write pages on how great Rictor is at boundaries like he's the king of boundaries when he wants to be (and then sucks when he doesn't tbh but shhh strengths focus here)

I always read that line from rictor about the posters in a teeth grinding annoyed voice. In a: ' can't you see I have a life and you aren't the center of it you asshole.'

It's a push back. Its healthy. It's maintaining the boundary of ' if you say I can't give you what you need then don't come to me when you need things.'

I also love the indication that the power release wasn't intentional because it relates back to the headcanon of ric having a tic disorder and that's dear to my heart. But I also feel it lends some emotional weight to the piece that shows just how deeply he cares and wants to be there for Star- who he is begrudgingly calling Ben and respecting Stars choice to have a new identity BTW like how fucking nice is that?

He isn't making fun of stars new identity or name he's supporting him. Like gdi ricstar is so great. He obviously doesn't like it and has some feelings there but he isn't forcing Star to be Star he's addressing him as 'Ben' with the quotations . Indicating there's a difference in how they've been handling the switch between Star and Ben.

Trying out different names and identities is very positive and common and I don't think this is a bad thing. I think inherently Star needed to explore life as Ben and that it's beautiful Ric was supporting him even if he personally accepted Star for who he was no matter what name he called himself.

Ric was willing to go with Star with whatever name he wanted to try or use until he was comfortable with himself. He was there to support him. It was Star that iced him out through a trauma response- normal for a real world relationship and great writing for a comic one.

Honestly the nuanced character development here is fantastic for both Ric and Star and pets them shine brilliantly. I only wish we had a Rictor solo series for this timeline to compliment it.

Yeah gasp I would want a Rictor solo series around this timeline or maybe post krakoa or maybe even M day time line.

TS saw Rictors character and gave him the boost up that he deserves and let him shine. He gave him so much development and it's a damn shame it's being overcast by people who are more interested in counting active couples than they are about the personhood of actual Queer characters and their life stories.

I sometimes wonder what would happen if we began to acknowledge the fetishization of two Queer men for being what it is: problematic even if we are LGBTQIA qnd doing the action I ourselves. Gay and Bisexual relationships are not a product to be consumed and the majority of Rictor fans are lesbians (not all but that's the running joke). I think it's important to reflect on how yaoi and Boys love influence how we in the LGBTQIA population view other same sex relationship and view them as a product to consume and fall into the same traps and toxic behaviors.

There's a lot to say on this and I'm not sure where I'm heading. but this one page holds so many little tidbits that show great writing and character building.

It's okay if people don't like the story. There's stuff wrong with it just like there is any other piece of media. But if they don't like it just because the guys aren't together then there needs to be a reflection on how you consume LGBTQIA media. This whole solo series was a love letter for them and a testament to Star building a life for himself and Ric.
