This Week in BL - OMG PLEASE STOP SINGING

May 2023 Wk 2

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Step By Step (Thai Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 4 of 10 (MDL still says 12, but Gaga still says 10) - Jeng trying to improve himself so awkwardly is kinda sweet. I love that Bruce it here & queer! Yay! Chot is my favorite but Pat is my spirit animal, I always sniff people’s bath products. Jeng looking at Pat in the suit = hello, future husband. The irony of Pat running around trying to find Jeng’s weakness, when it’s clearly him. Also WASH YOUR HANDS & NO SINGING.

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - still loving this one, enjoyed seeing the seme’s side of the meat cute. The miscommunication seems properly vested (although we may be manipulated by the visuals into thinking it’s kissing when it isn’t). But so far I am all in. Also killer chemistry with the leads already. My catnip. BUT... NO SINGING!

Our Skyy 2 (Vise Versa) eps 7-8 - Each day of the month is a BL trope? That jives. The kid was a fun plot twist - if he had been real and not a lie. I chortled a lot and all the domesticity was nice, but I wasn’t surprised when it was all Pluen lying again. Once a liar, always a liar. Could Jimmy please play a better character next time? Also. NO SINGING. 6/10

Pastsenger (Thai Weds Gaga) ep 10 of 12 eps - Amnesia just makes me feel like we backslid and all the previous work of watching 9 eps is for naught. And it was WORK with this show. At least it only lasted one episode, but still, they’re gonna use it to continue the rift? Sigh.

A Boss and a Babe (Fri YouTube) ep 11 of 12 - As much as I dislike these characters being constantly betrayed by the narrative, I really do love Cher. A sunshine sweetheart who is actually a decent honest human, who’s not ashamed of his love or his personality, it’s really rare and admirable on screen. I have to give B&B props for this character, if nothing else. And there is nothing else. This was possibly one of the stupidest episode 11 dooms ever fielded. And I do not say that lightly.

The Promise (Thai Weds YT & WeTV) ep 8 of 10 - This show has got to stop dwelling on the separation, every time they do it it just makes Phu look worse. I legitimately didn’t think that was possible. I LOVE Party so much. Not only is he a good friend, and probably an excellent boyfriend, he’s a great businessman. Khun is lovely too. Happy to have him win Nan’s heart. Really, anyone but Phu. Also Nan = an ace who collects hotties everywhere he goes? Props baby.

House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) ep 2 of 12 - Very soap - kinda creepy, too long pauses, bloated cast, and utter confusion. Odd. The captions are insane, one name can (and will) be spelled 3 different ways. It’s a VAST cast and I can only really identify 3 characters: 1. the actor with the (beard?) gf who’s a suspiciously militant ally, 2. The oldest actor in the house with dark traumatic past, 3. The adorable evil femme who needles everyone. I might drop this show, I’m only really still watching bc it’s the only BL airing on Monday. Also: NO SINGING

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 6 of 10 - I’ve been waiting for this chapter. It’s one of my favorites from the manga.

Love Mate (Korea Thurs Viki) eps 3-4 of 8 - Aggressive flirting or stalking? These 2 give Lovely Writer vibes. Honestly, I never thought Korea would go so very old school yaoi. Also went quickly to a high heat place I wasn’t expecting (but Japan would). 50% for a sex scene is very gay but wild for a KBL. If this were Strongberry it would’ve ended on this episode and I would’ve been fine with it. Now what? 4 eps of boyfriends? That’s cool but what is this crazy surreal BL world I am living in?

Happy Merry Ending (Korea Thurs Gaga) eps 5-6 of 8 - Honestly, Korea, does it always have to be a love triangle? Always? Anygay, timid tsundere & confident sunshine is an interesting match. They’re sweet together, almost kindly. I like the calm ache of this pair. At first I thought it would be too much like Love Mate, but they’re completely different. I really want someone to punch the CEO ex, oh goodie! Battle of the hyungs.

Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) - very in line with the my cat boyfriend tradition but honestly how can any human look like that? He truly myst be a cat.

The Day I Loved You (Pinoy YouTube) eps 4-5 of 10 - It’s cute. They’re cute. Truth comes out when locked in a bathroom. Yay a new pinoy BL I actually like for a change. It’s been a LONG time. However BOOO for the doomy “I want to be remembered, are you dying”. But a nicely dramatic midpoint.

Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 5 of 12 - How can he be so completely unaware of how in love he is? Ah well, I suppose we aren’t yet half way through and it’s one of THOSE JBLs. In yaoi half the time you are husbands before you even confess you like the other person.

It is unfair for a real live human to be this beautiful. We talking Hunjin-level unfair. WTF Vietnam? Why you gotta broadside us like this?

It’s Airing But ...

Love Syndrome (Thai Sat WeTV) stopped at ep 2 of 12 - I’m just not into any aspect of it (except Lee Long Shi) - saving to binge if the end is solid.

Venus in the Sky (Sat YouTube) pilot/tester?) 0 of 10 - not entirely sure what’s up with this one distribution-wise, but the pilot was classic university-set pulp. I hope it happens because the leads are cute with good chemsitry and I thought it was fun. However, this pilot holds together as its own little short too.

Stormy Honeymoon (Vietnam)

My Story (Pinoy Sat YouTube) ep 4 of 10 - I bounced.

Next Week Looks Like This:

Star Struck (Korea iQIYI) ostensibly starts Thursday but icky is being janky about it, so we shall see - A boy has had a crush on his childhood friend for a long time. Stars Zuho (Kpop SF9 - noted good egg) opposite rookie actor Kim In Sung (the one with the crush).

Happy Merry Ending and Boss & Babe both end. Be My Favorite will be taking the GMMTV Fridgay time slot.

Coming in May 2023:

5/26 Be My Favorite prev title: You Are My Favorite (Thai YouTube) Adapted JittiRain y-novel (2gether, FUTS, ToL, Vice Versa) one of those “rewrite the past to change the future.” Stars Krist (SOTUS) + Fluke Gawin (DBK, Not Me). Expect this to be v low heat, full of LIES and manipulation.

5/27 The Luminous Solution (Thai ????) 10 eps - Thana is having trouble at work and in his relationship. He can't seem to catch a break. So he makes a wish to change everything. The wish has a price.

5/27 Takumi-kun Series 6: Nagai Nagai Monogatari no Hajimari no Asa (Japan) - NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS (but that has never stopped Japan before) and no, I have no idea where to get it, why would I ????? (Say it with me everyone: Oh Japan, must you?*)

* At least I never have to tell Japan to stop singing. Small mercies.

I think I heard something or other about bullying and I wasn't sure if it was between the main couple since it's enemies to lovers but it seems like it's between the second couple? is homophobia gonna be an aspect of the bullying?

I was kinda expecting Doyoon to walk in but makes sense it's the other guy Juha since Doyoon went home

ah, Seheon wants to break up with the Taeyi cuz of all their brotherly mess?

they usually make up quickly which is good cuz we're literally at the last ep hah

idk if I wanted more of Juha/Doyoon or not like... I might've warmed up to them more? because theoretically I could like the dynamic if it's more developed

Overall:

Nobody in this drama asks before kissing lol not Doyoon, not Seheon, not the little kiss that Seheon's brother gave to sleeping Taejoon, and the other two, Juha and Taeyi, are experts in being creeps and having internalized homophobia that they direct outwardly to the guys they like as well (Seheon's brother fits here too lol). Yet, I enjoyed it a fair amount, the story was coherent, the acting was fine, I was endeared by Doyoon (is he the Omega X kid?), and the dynamics were enjoyable, if iffy on certain counts. Not super attached though.

Rating: 6/10

I know for so many KBL’s, viewers (me too!) always complain that the show would do so well as a full length, hour long 12ish episode run. But I think Happy Ending Romance is for real the first one where I wish it so DEEPLY. Like I understand ALL. THE. CHARACTERS. All their actions make sense. And all of them are SO LAYERED it’s crazy. It would have been so easy making Jung Hyun this horrible boyfriend who is using Jung Woo for clout because his writing is so good, but they DIDNT. I GENUINELY BELIEVE that it was difficult for Jung Hyun too (to a degree), and that he was doing what HE thought was best for Jung Woo. Jung Woo came to him AT ROCK BOTTOM, saying pretty dark stuff, OBVIOUSLY he would cling to whatever saves him! Also Jung Hyun, MID essentially being broken up with, is STILL kind of running around trying to protect Jung Woo!! Am I saying I’m team Jung Hyun? No, this love has ran its course. But I AM saying these characters are so good and my GOSH what a way to end the year.

I really, really enjoy your 'Chains of Heart' gifs because they show the incredible cinematography and aesthetics of the show so beautifully. Thank you for making these! And may I request this kind of gifset for ep. 6 after your hiatus ends?

Because I feel like they've outdone themselves with some of the shots in that episode! The scene with the wooden statues, the silhouettes of Payu and Din looking out of the window, Ken making a phone call in front of that stained glass window, DeeDee's basket of flowers, the shot with the cross at the end of the episode (!!?!?!) and so on. Truly awesome. 😍

Anyways. I'd love to see a gifset of your favourite, aesthetically pleasing shots from that episode. (Only if you're in the mood and have time for it after "your return" of course! :))

(And let me add some quick afterthoughts because there are so little people to talk about 'Chains of Heart' with and I just read your review of the episode: I also think that Lue's dream was one of the best scenes of the show so far. Maybe even THE best scene. Boom's acting was heartbreakingly beautiful, right? And the fact that they used this as a COLD OPEN! Can't believe I had to pause and breathe for a second before we even had reached the opening credits! 🙈😭

You said that the most disturbing scene for you was the one-eyed man dancing (with the woman). You know what? I think that might have been a Quentin Tarantino reference. There's a very famous and unsettling torture/dancing scene in 'Reservoir Dogs' and it was the first thing that popped into my mind while watching this. Just as a random fun fact. :) But you know what I really liked about that scene? The fact that the mask of our "Joker" slipped for a second and we got a glimpse of the real emotion and fear hidden beneath that crazy laugh and constructed "nothing can touch me"-persona. 👀

Anyways. Can't wait for the next episode - the bed scene in the teaser looked like a lot of fun. 🤭

And of course the first thing I do after coming back are gifsets for Chains of Heart 😊 The cinematography is just too beautiful! I couldn't resist! You can find the one for episode 6 here 🌸 Thank you for the request! I don't like DeeDee that much, so he won't come up that often in my sets 🙈 But the flowers were beautiful.

I never thought of Reservoir Dogs or Quentin Tarantino in general, but now I can't unsee it! That is brilliant! Perhaps tat is one of the reasons I like this series taht much, I enjoy Tarantino's movies very much.

The series might not be in the top spot right now, because of all the stupidly good KBLs, but I still enjoy and love it! I just hope Ken and Din/Lue can have a reunion before the last episode...They suffered enough.

what are your top 10 bls? i need some to watch asap i'm so bored of straight ppl shows ;-;

mhmmm, let me think!

my absolute top bl is to my star 2: our untold stories, the continuation of the little jewel that is to my star. it’s way angstier than the first season and deals with my absolutely favorite trope, exes to lovers, and it was good enough to compel me to open a letterboxd account. like, that’s how good it is.

other than that, i absolutely love manner of death, starring bl royalty maxtul in their most sophisticated offering to date yet. it’s less classic bl and more of a romance/crime drama, and i loved every, even at times unhinged, second of it. if you enjoyed manner of death, you will enjoy bl staple kinnporsche, if you haven’t watched yet.

i love both seasons of we best love, available on weTV. one of the first bls i’ve ever watched and it just did everything so well, i revisit it every now and again. heaps of chemistry.

semantic error is probably the best kbl we have ever gotten and i can only whole heartedly recommend it, classic tsundere and sunshine set in a university, but it is truly just so much more than any trope could ever put into words. perfect casting and amazing chemistry make this the standout among kbls; i just love it so much. but i enjoyed oh! my assistant (despite the fact that i don’t think they stuck the landing that well), the new employee, where your eyes linger, once again (sad ending), tinted with you and long time no see. you make me dance is one of the most underrated picks in my favorites but i just love it; i always enjoy a well-done bit of age gap, and these two have so much chemistry. and it’s just so visually stunning.

i’m working through blueming right now, haven’t finished it yet tho, so i cannot say too much.

crowd favorites that i (mostly) enjoyed, or that are just beloved in general in case you haven’t gotten into it yet: cutie pie, tharntype (reserved rec), love in the air (reserved rec), why r u?, bad buddy, until we meet again, between us and big dragon (had a hard time getting into it but it has some standout episodes), bad buddy, not me, the eclipse. i have watched some of these, haven’t watched others. make of that what you will.

i also defo enjoyed be loved in house: i do. something about taiwan’s style really gets to me, i think it is a little more sophisticated than what we are used to from thai bl but maybe that’s just because i rarely do a trash or pulp watch, and my favorite overall style is probably korean bl; i wish we would get full drama treatments but there’s still a long way to go. anyways.

old fashion cupcake is the perfect bl, in my opinion, and just thinking about it makes me go absolutely crazy. most definite recommendation on this list; i actually think everyone should watch this show, whether you’re a bl fan or not. it’s a beautiful story about how there is no such thing as being too late for love, or for anything in life, really, and i enjoyed it so much.

anyways, long story short, let me try to compile a list of my top 10.

to my star 2: our untold stories (my all time favorite bl. watching season 1 is definitely needed but season 1 is also exceptionally good, so it’s no hardship. i cannot recommend it enough, especially if you enjoy angst. i know some people said this is too angsty, or the amount of angst is not worth the outcome but i disagree. it is real and messy and human, and that’s what i love so much about it. it made me cry way too many times. excellent on all fronts.)

I was tagged by @isvisomewhere thank you so much for tagging me. 1. Your all-time favourite bl and why: Cherry Magic probably takes the crown even though there are some others that I really love. It was just honestly one of the most wholesome shows I’ve ever watched, bl or otherwise. With wonderful and most kind characters. Also, I really relate to Adachi, so there’s that too. And acting, god the acting.

2. That one bl that scarred you for life: I wouldn’t say scarred but a lot of them have given me trust issues. One that comes to my mind is probably HIStory:MODC. Still haven’t watched that last episode and I am not planning to.

3. Is there any bl that made you feel very single: Like all of them. But most recently Bad Buddy. Where’s my rival who’s secretly in love with me. And who I am going to be secretly pinning over as well.

4. If you could change one thing from a bl, which one would it be?: THE Avoiding of using the actual words like gay or lesbian or bisexual. Or any other labels like that. Those labels exist for a reason, you are making a show about queer characters. Like come on. Also the use of female characters only as crazy fangirls or crazy jealous exes. Women are real, they are actual human beings, it would be nice to actually show that. (Bad Buddy was such a breath of fresh air with actual female characters existing outside of those two categories). One more thing, which I saw other people mentioned as well, the whole fanservice and shipping real people thing. It’s just weird and kinda disturbing when you really think about it.

5. That one bl you detest (don’t hold back): Detest is a strong word but probably TharnType, I am sure ya’ll understand why(don’t really want to get into it). And Fish upon the sky. God that show was a disappointment. It made my blood boil.

6. Your top 5: Agh, this is so hard. I can’t choose only five.

1. The Untamed ( some don’t consider it full bl but we know it is, and its one of the best ones) and Word of honor (they are a tie here, sorry can’t choose) 2. Cherry Magic (obviously) 3. ITSAY (It was just beautiful) 4. Bad Buddy (this show gave me life) 5. We best love (first season was just amazing)

(also i am sorry but i have to mention some others cause 5 is not enough: Gaya Sa Pelikula made me cry my eyes out, it will forever hold a special place in my heart. HIStory:Crossing the line, its such an underrated show but it’s a gem. HIStory3:Trapped, Life:Love on the line, Kieta hatsukoi, My beautiful man, Where your eyes linger (korea came in with a bang and they still haven’t topped that). Okay, I am done. Sorry I got carried away. 7. That trashy bl that you lowkey like: Why R U? like it was a mess, a disaster but heart wants what it wants. (also aren’t most bls a bit trashy).

8. Your favourite Korean bl (it’s important we know): Where your eyes linger, it was just so good. The fact that they made it work so well is probably what stayed with me the most. The episodes were short but they didn’t feel like it. 9. But also your top 3 for kbls: Aside for where your eyes linger, Light on me, Mr Heart, To my star. (And anything by strongberry really, they are an absolutely wonderful lgbtq production company, they make amazing short films. Some of them are even on youtube for free so if you haven’t seen them please do go check them out). 10. Season 2? Which one?: I wanted Colour Rush but now that we are getting it I am not so sure I actually want it. It was such an interesting concept and they could have explored it so much but oh well...

11. A bunch of dramas will air soon. Which ones are you most excited about?: Cherry Magic the movie(I can’t wait), Kinnporche, to my star 2, Between us.

Your all time favorite bl and why

The thing is my heart says bad buddy but part of me says that’s to predictable and it just ended so maybe I’m just living in the high of that but I truly do feel like it is the best bl of all time, I mean it’s my new number 1 of all time and for good reason, everything about it is so good from the acting to the storyline to the pacing and characters to how they handle and approach problems and situation they just do it in a way no other bl is out here doing it like truly no bl can even hold a candle to bad buddy like there’s no competition it’s just truly no other bl even remotely similar and that’s real rarity

That one bl that scarred you for life

Ok not a series, but a movie and that would be A cornered mouse dreams of cheese if you’re looking to be in depressive episode for a couple of days this is the movie for you, it is a really good movie don’t get it twisted but for some reason it fucked me up, truly sad that I cannot watch it a second time or else I’d rewatch it in a heartbeat but my mental health can not take it

Is there any bl that made you feel very single

A lot of BLs of course but the one that comes to mind as of recently is bad buddy, like I distinctly remember just sitting there talking about some scene or something and just being like “wow I never felt more single than I do right now” whatever it was it hit me hard

If you could Change one thing from a BL which one would it be

The miscommunication of we best love, like cause if Shu Yi talked to Shi De when he showed up in America everything would have been cleared up there I mean there would still be the problem of Shu Yi’s dad telling Shi De to stay away from him So like theres still angst for the second season but then at least he wouldn’t have thought that Shi De just went to America abandoned him, got married and had a baby for five years straight You know? At first I didn't think I had anything for this But then I was going through my lists and saw it, Boyband love now I KNEW this was going to dumb before I watched it and I knew it the whole time I was watching but for some reason didn’t stop, rather couldn’t stop like it was busting out laughing funny but it was just not suppose to be, I truly hate it

In order to do this I had to look at all my BLs Ive watched And then put it into a top 10 in order to like narrow it down and like it’s kind of crazy because the fact that my beautiful man made it into my top five when I was so against it and so persistent on not watching this show for so long like it is absolutely insane

Waterboyy listen hear me out I watched this and it was one of my favorites for like a while, I watched it very early on in my bl journey and It was before I was actually “evolved” in the bl community of it all (meaning before seeing peoples opinions and valid points that I just didn’t think of) so I think that’s why I liked it so much like at that time i just really didn’t know what was good and what was bad I was but a wee bl watcher I remember after a while that I watched it and I was more evolved in the community and seeing what people thought about It I thought they were wild I thought they were crazy cause like I watched it and it was good, But then people were making some kind of like valid points and I was like hmm ok maybe there a lil bit right so therefore I think if I watched it today I would have completely different opinion thus I will never rewatch it cause it will taint the version in my head

Your favorite Korean BL

To my star I don’t have a lot of luck enjoying kbls I don’t why like Ive watched a good amount and to my star remains my no. 1 and it was the 4th kbl I ever watched, I love this show so much it is the best kbl and I will take that to my grave I truly don't see anything else topping it but who knows there's a lot kbls coming out so

Season two? which one?

Honestly all the season twos I want are actually getting them or there are at least rumors but I guess I'll say Manner of death cause I'm pretty sure that one is REALLY rumored (correct me if I'm wrong) now I'll just say some 2s I'm looking forward to, to my star season 2 and my engineer season 2 (if thats even still happening)

I was tagged by @tipsyjaehyun and I’m sorry for being so inactive! I’ve been more busy lately. Got a new puppy. Currently in college. Full time at work. Everything’s crazy!

But here we go!

1. Your all time favorite bl and why: Not to be predictable, but Bad Buddy took over my entire world when it came out. It is just such a woke show. It says eff you to all the heteronormative bullshit.

2. That one bl that scarred you for life: Call Me By Your Name. There are not a lot of BLs I watch that I don’t like. But I guess I’ll just put this one out there. I can’t watch American BLs the same after watching international BLs. I don’t hate it, there are just certain scenes that make me cringe, so I can’t watch it the same anymore. Love By Chance is actually the same way for me.

3. Is there any bl that made you feel very single: Bad Buddy for sure dude! Lovely Writer. Just so many. Too many to count.

4. If you could change one thing from a bl, which one would it be? I’d probably change Love By Chance to not have TumTar or KlaNo as side ships. Those ships were just so bad.

5. That one bl you detest (don’t hold back): I don’t hate any BLs really. If I don’t immediately like them, I don’t watch them. But I’m not a huge fan of Dark Blue and Moonlight and Life Love on the Line. I know I’m gonna stir up some feelings on that one. I just didn’t get into them.

6. Your top 5: I actually made an updated top 10 BLs list for 2021, but I realized I forgot a lot of BLs in my list. My top 5 has definitely already changed since I made that in December. But right now I’d say Bad Buddy, Lovely Writer, I Told Sunset About You, A Tale of Thousand Stars, Light on Me. I also really love HIStory 4 and Until We Meet Again.

7. That trashy bl that you lowkey like: I’m gonna agree with @tipsyjaehyun on this one and put Love Mechanics for this. I also just really loved all of the En of Love series. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I really enjoyed all three and they were up in my top 10 at the end of 2020 *hides under pillow* Don’t shame me.

8. Your favourite Korean bl (it’s important we know): It’s up in my top 5, baby!! Light on Me. It changed my entire outlook on Korean BLs. I didn’t think a kbl could resonate so hard with me, but it just hit hard in my feels. I binged it in less than 24 hours. The love triangle isn’t done poorly like most love triangles are. It had me rooting for both of the love interests. I didn’t know who I preferred him to be with. It’s a masterpiece. I just really loved it.

9. But also your top 3 for kbls: I have seen a good amount of kbl and the reason I found Light on Me so awesome was because personally kbls don’t hit as hard for me (like thai, taiwanese, or filipino bls do). But there are a few decent ones that I can throw in here. Color Rush is really good. I found the plot really interesting. Peach of Time as well. It’s on the fence of being a thai bl, too, since we have Jimmy from WhyRU in it and the languages mesh quite a bit. However, it’s really good and has a good premise. Another good one that always pops into my mind is Mr. Heart. PLEASE go check that one out. It had me hooked from minute number one. There are a lot of other good ones but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

10. Season 2? Which One? I personally don’t like season 2s in most cases (SOTUS S and TharnType 7 Years of Love being the only real exceptions tbh), but if I’m being real, a season 2 of Bad Buddy would make me real happy (as long as they did it right). I would even accept a special episode. Thank you 😊

11. A bunch of dramas will air soon. Which ones are you most excited for? I am so excited for most of the GMMTV series that are coming out. A few specific ones being Never Let Me Go, Vice Versa, Moonlight Chicken and The ECLIPSE. I’m also excited for Cutie Pie Series.

Here's my attempt at @sunsetknowsaboutyou‘s tag game. Thank you for tagging me @7nessasaryevils 🥰

1. your all time favorite bl and why

Ah I never have an answer for questions like this! I’m so mercurial, I change favourites almost everyday. If I had to pick just one, Gaya Sa Pelikula (Like in the Movies) would probably come out on top for me. The story was so simple yet so elegantly crafted, the characters, even the side characters, inhabited their spaces like real people, with their own backgrounds, motivations, dreams and flaws, which was only helped by the extraordinary performances of the actors. Add to that the phenomenal soundtrack which I still listen to today and I am lost.

2. that one bl that scarred you for life

Slgihtly controversial I know, but Addicted (Heroin). I think because I was enjoying it until I was very suddenly NOT enjoying it. I had a similar reaction to Waterboyy, but not as severely as I did Addicted. (I was lucky to avoid the emotional devastation of History 3: MODC due to seeing spoilers in the comments).

3. is there any bl that made you feel very single?

Bad Buddy is honestly the first to really make me feel anything like that. Pat and Pran really modelled the healthiest relationship I have ever seen in any show, BL or het, Asian or Western. And they did it while also not shying away from the realities of relationships - the fights, the less than perfect families, the annoying habits.

4. if you could change one thing from a bl, which one would it be?

I realise this is meant to be one thing from one BL but who could pick just one for just one show? Unfortunately the BL drama industry is endemic with some seriously messed up nonsense. My true, true abhorred is the top-bottom dynamic in its most predatory form found throughout so many BL shows. Plus the toxic femme fatale trope, it’s 2022, let’s move past this please.

6. your top five:

Obviously Gaya Sa Pelikula is up there. Bad Buddy shoved its way in at episode 4 and hasn’t left since. Until We Meet Again has to be in there, though I’m still salty we didn’t get the ManaowDel storyline we deserved. History 3: Trapped, my beloved himbo cop and his soft gangster boyfriend. Manner of Death, watching this as it came out was a wild af ride, I had it on while I was in zoom classes because I was so desperate to know what happened 😂

Special mentions: He’s Coming to Me, A Tale of a Thousands Stars, & We Best Love.

8. your favorite korean bl (it’s important we know)

Long Time, No See (Strongberry, my beloved). This could literally be pure fanfiction, and I mean this in only the most glowing way. An assassin of a Korean gang is also secretly an author of a popular queer web novel and he meets his number one fan, who he’s been talking to online for some time, and they fall for each other hard. Plot twist? Mr Number One fan is also a hitman but for his rival gang. Amazing.

9. but also your top 3 for kbls

Other than Long Time, No See: Where Your Eyes Linger (my first), Colour Rush (for the audacity of being an actual colourblind soulmates AU), and if I’m truly, truly honest, a short film called Do You Want? It’s only 6 minutes long but I can’t count how many times I’ve rewatched it - give it a go, you won’t be disappointed. (There’s also a GL and het version)

10. season 2? which one?

My Engineer for RamKing only please. Otherwise I'm not generally bothered by second seasons.

11. a bunch of dramas will air soon. which ones are you the most excited for?

I was incredibly excited for Not Me, but Bad Buddy kind of derailed it for me, oops, looking forward to getting into it now though! I have high hopes for KinnPorsche too

Not sure if you'll have an opinion on this, but I'm curious. I keep noticing a lot of casting connections between Japanese BL and another Japanese media genre I watch, and in particular one franchise. And I can't tell if it's A Thing or not. Maybe I'm just seeing it because I happen to watch both of these genres (maybe if I was into some other genre I'd see the same kind of overlap?), or for a mundane reason (e.g. maybe shows from both genres recruit actors of a certain sort/level of success?). It seems like more than a coincidence. But if it's not a coincidence, why would this happen?

The genre I'm talking about is tokusatsu shows. My family and I got into kaiju movies, then into Ultraman shows, and through that into other tokusatsu stuff. Around the same time, I got into Kdramas and eventually branched out to stuff from other parts of Asia and into BL. The franchise that most of the tokusatsu overlap happens with is Kamen Rider.

My sample size is small as I'm a recent convert to BLs, which is a weakness for this tentative argument, but I really think this might be noteworthy...maybe? Here's what I've got so far (noting years because the time range is interesting):

Senpai, This Can't Be Love! is full of Kamen Rider alums. I knew both leads (from Saber, 2020, and Ex-Aid, 2016) and their boss (from Ryuki, 2002), then heard from others on here that two other minor characters were on KR shows I haven't seen yet. This is the most extreme example by far and may be skewing my perception.

I knew Takeda Kouhei of Old Fashion Cupcake from Kamen Rider Kiva (2008), where his character is the polar opposite of Nozue (overconfident, flamboyant, girl-crazy). But then I found out he was a regular on Kamen Rider Build (2017) as well.

Less clear-cut and in the opposite direction, Nishijima Hidetoshi was in What Did You Eat Yesterday? (just heard about this quasi-BL from one of your posts) before being the lead in Kamen Rider Black Sun this year. He was also just in Shin Ultraman, the only overlap between Ultraman and the BL world I've noted so far.

At this point anyone reading this is probably picturing me like that meme of a wild-eyed Charlie Day in front of his conspiracy-theory wall collage. But I keep wondering. Is there someone in a studio role responsible for BL who's a huge Kamen Rider fan? A veteran casting director from Toei making a leap to a studio that produces BLs? Or maybe I just have a case of apophenia (unfounded pattern-finding).

Wondering if you might have some insight.

My guess is that it's actually agency stables in play. Talent agencies and casting directors get in each others pockets a lot. So often you'll see cross over actors, sets of actors, like the casting director fielded the agency's team.

Usually this is because the casting director notified the agency of the roles available and the agency also looked into all the sides, extras, etc and basically blanketed the couch with possibilities from thier stable.

So for example, Takara & Amagi are both played by Jpop idols, but while they're form different groups, they share the same talent agency.

To My Star stars Son Woo Hyun & Kim Kang Min are from the same agency and were also both in The Golden Spoon and Tale of the Nine-Tailed.

If you watch Kdramas as well as KBL you'll start to see this a lot with the sides and extras. I think Japan operates similarly. Something like Absolute BL fielded a ton of familiar faces and I think quite a few of them were from the same agency.

If casting has a good working relationship going with an agency, they can just ring them up from set to send someone over real quick if there has been a drop out or a sudden need for an extra. It's a kind of laziness but also the result of long relationships and industry networking. Also actors will travel in packs and get pulled in just because they're hanging around set while their friend is shooting, and they're often friendly because they share an agency.

I wouldn't be surprised if a number of the better KBL lead pairs turn out to be from the same talent agency and to have at least socially known each other before filming. I've never cared enough to look into it, but I would take an educated guess at 50% or so.

It's all about networking in ET.
